Inspiron 17R Special Edition Memory

Q: Inspiron 17R Special Edition Memory

Can the laptop handle 2 8GB dimms for a total of 16 instead of how it is sold with 8. The laptop would be viable but the memory is holding it back.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
Welcome to the community.
Well, Dell does not recommend 2 sticks of 8 GB RAM each installed in this system as that may cause a motherboard failure. However installing 8 GB, 1600 MHZ chips may or may not work.
Let me know in case there are any other concerns. Glad to be of assistance.
Thanks & Regards

The mSATA cache drive was one of the differentiators.  When that system was built, SSDs were appreciably more expensive than they are now.

Which would you guys get? The Surface Pro 4 or the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 edition.
Both- i5, 8GB ram and 256 SSD.
Dell with extended warranty and everything comes out to be 1300 and the Surface Pro 4 1600 with the same 3 year warranty and everything.
Which device would you guys get and why?
Have any of you encountered yourselves in this same position?
Thanks :)

Yo. I was in the same boat. But, I'm getting the 13 7000 Special Edition for $589 from Dell after price matching on Newegg. Getting an i5, 8gb RAM, 500gb HDD w/8gb SSD, and a 1080p screen in an all metal casing in their Gold color. With the extra $ I'm getting a few synths and what not for my music production

Hey
I have inspiron 15r se with 1TB HDD.
I would like to add a mSATA card to my system to be able to use IRST.
Is it possible now?
I am skeptic because I have read online that systems which were not shipped with 32 GB mSATA card, doesn't have mSATA port for later installation.
When I purchased the system at that time dell had the option for adding 32 GB mSATA card in the customization section, but now dell has removed the whole customization section from the website. And in the pre-configured models, there is no option for mSATA card.
Please clear this doubt and if possible post the pictures of the system and the daughter board where mSATA card can be installed.
If you need any further details regarding my system configuration, feel free to ask.
Thanks in advance

A:Installing mSATA card on Inspiron 15R special edition (7520)

Hey everyone!
All those who are willing to buy Dell Inspiron 15R special edition (7520), and would like to upgrade the system with mSATA card manually after making the purchase, must know that there are  two different configurations with which the system is being sold. While on one of these configuration there is an mSATA port available on the daughter board (part number N7JHH) in the system. Whereas on the other configuration there is no mSATA port available on the daughter board (part number MRDMM) present in the system.
Most of the Dell representatives don't have any information in this regard and they are openly stating that mSATA cards are compatible with 7520. Please don't go by their words and ask them specifically if the above mentioned daughter board is present in the system or not. Only a very few of them are stating  "If the system was not ordered with mSATA  card most likely your system daughter board will not have the mSATA slot", that too after days of inquiry.
If you are hoping to upgrade the system with mSATA card, then my advice to you would be to make a prudent decision before purchasing.
Cheers!

Hi all - quick question. I have a Inspiron 13 7000 special edition. So far, I love it. The only nit that I have with it is that frequently, when waking up from sleep - even if I just have the lid closed for 5 minutes - it takes about 30 seconds to 1 minute to wake from sleep.
It's pretty annoying and if anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.
More info:
Latest BIOS installed
All drivers up to date using Dell's update utility.

Click on 'Start ‘and right click on 'My Computer'.
Click on 'Manage' and click on 'Device Manager'.
Expand 'Universal Bus Controller' and right click on each entry named as 'USB Root Hub' and click on 'uninstall'.
Once done, restart the system and install Chipset drivers from both the links:

INTEL Intel Management Engine Interface: http://dell.to/XfgiE3Dell Intel HM77 Chipset: http://dell.to/XtphhaCard reader: http://dell.to/VLDhsw
Steps to install a driver:

Click on 'Download File'.
Select 'Single-file download' and click on 'Continue'.
Click on 'Save' and save the driver on the desktop.
Right click on the driver from the desktop and select 'Run as administrator'.
Install the driver following the on screen instructions.
Restart the system after the installation is done.

Once the chipset drivers are installed, make sure you install all the Windows updates and restart the system.
Update the BIOS in case the issue is not resolved:

Hello. - I bought my laptop when it had Win 8.1.  When MS offered Win 10 I accepted that offer.  So, it now has Win 10 (64-bit). - After many tries, I have never had success making my 1 authorized backup copy of the OS...either before or after the upgrade.  I would get to the part about putting in 6 DVDs or one external Flash memory.  I bought a new external hard drive, and have tried that.  It has plenty of room, but it was never recognized. - I want to install a SSD, but am concerned about migration of the OS.- I have instructions for replacing the hard drive, but I'd like step-by-step for migrating the drives. - Can anyone help me with: 1) getting a good backup prior to beginning, and 2) a step-by-step guide? Thank you.

A:HHD to SSD w/ Cloning for HP Beat Special Edition 15-p030nr

The first thing that you need to do is to create  a usb recovery flashdrive. There are a number of flashdrives that will work. Sandisk is not one of them. Start the HP Recovery media creator utility.  It will off the choice of DVD or usb. That is where you will find out the capacity required.  I Had no problem making a uSB  recovery flashdrive for my product loan Spectre 13 ultrabook. I used a 32 GB  PNY usb 3.0 flashdrive that I bought at at Seattle, Washington BestBuy last June. I wrote a tutorial on how to clone from HDD to SSD at the top of the notebook Hardware section. Yeah -- it's FREE --but you have to register with Paragon to get an activation code, or you can't install it, and then, if you read further, there are limitations on using this, including NO upgrades.

A:Toshiba m35-s456 special edition video problems

you have the broken videochip in this case. this is typical problem for m35 series of toshiba laptops. only replacing the video chip will helps. the videochip is soldered onto MB. there are two modifications of videochip: single-chip package and sandwich package(that means, that videoRAM is located with videochip crystal's surface).

Jumanji:

Thanks for that. I just downloaded it. I'm always looking for imaging alternatives.

I haven't participated in anything from Giveawayoftheday for some time. Do you have any opinion on whether the downloads they offer are crippled in any non-obvious way---such as the app working only for a limited time, spyware, adware, unanticipated doodads or toolbars, etc etc???

Paragon has a good rep generally, but I am wondering if this package may be doctored in some way?

I bought this laptop 5 years ago and it stopped working within 3 months. I gave up on fixing it after no one gave a viable solution. I found this place and now would like to ask for help regarding my problem.

The laptop switches on and functions well, except the screen does not turn on at all. Any fixes?

Laptop model is Lenovo G555.

Yes it does see p. 53 of the Manual: Star Wars Notebook Manual You have to remove the bottom cover to access the slot but it can take a 2280 mm M.2 SATA disk module.  if this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others ifnd it.

Just wondering what everyone thinks about Paragon Total Defrag 2010 Special Edition. Is it better than any other free defragger out there? Why or why not?

A:Is Paragon Total Defrag 2010 Special Edition good?

I like Raxco PerfectDisk myself. I'm not saying the Paragon offering isn't decent, but my experience of Paragon is all too commonly finding clunky, ill thought out, user menus and a quite non-intuitive interface design.

Everything Paragon charge for regularly gets slapped on free promotions on their own website, so you might want to see if they offer a subscriber newsletter.

The user manual for the XPS 8900 shows one HDMI Port. If you connect your monitor to this port for the XPS 8900 SPECIAL EDITION, the NIVIDIA setup will not be available.  There is another UN-referenced HDMI Port on the panel below the Audio Ports.  This connects directly to the GeForce GTX 960 Card. Maybe the manual diagram needs to be updated to show this.

A:HP Pavilion Star Wars Special Edition Laptop, is putting som...

Good post. Well thought-out questions. Answers: 1. Memory. Yes, you can mix brands as long as the speed, voltage and latency and more particularly, the density is the same. If the old memory has 4 blocks on the side, get another with the same and also true if it has 8.  2. Wifi. There is no whitelist. However, in some cases where HP includes a poor wireless card, it also means there is only one wireless antenna. If that is the case, upgrade is a nightmare. If there are 2 antenna leads, you can install any other wifi module available in the same form factor (mini pci-e or M.2) with 2 wireless antenna connectors. 3. SSD. You nailed it on the head. In Windows 10 you can even do a system image backup and recover it to the new SSD and you don't have to buy cloning software.  4. Win 10 Pro. In the system properties page, there is a link to get the higher version of Windows 10, which will lead you to a download page for Pro and you can pay "the man" and do the upgrade. Just be sure you really need Pro. Not very many people do.  Let us know if there are more questions. If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Hi I have just bought a HP Star Wars special edition notebook with Windows preinstalled On the initial setup I accidentally typed in my name wrong in the User account setup The keys are in a slightly different place on this keyboard to my old one and when I tried to hit 'backspace' I hit 'enter' instead and it moved onto the next page with no option to go back a page Anyway I have changed my user account name to the one I want now but the user folder C Users still has the incorrect name I have read a few ways of solving this on here and decided that due to this being a new computer that I've made hardly any changes to it might be easiest to just reset the system and start again My question is this - because this computer is a special edition which came with lots of Star Wars content if I do a full reset will it reset Wars special Windows Star notebook on 10 a edition reset with the content still intact or will it wipe all the Star Wars content and reset to a Windows 10 reset on a Star Wars special edition notebook 'normal' version of Windows Thanks in advance Windows 10 reset on a Star Wars special edition notebook for your help

A:Windows 10 reset on a Star Wars special edition notebook

There's no need to reset the laptop. Simply create a new user account for you, change its account type to administrator (all new accounts after the first initial one are standard accounts when created), sign out from the original account, sign in to your new account and finally remove the original account. Takes a few minutes, much faster than a full reset.

Step 1, create a new user account: User Account - Add in Windows 10 - Windows 10 ForumsStep 2, change the new account's type to Administrator: Account Type - Change in Windows 10 - Windows 10 ForumsStep 3, remove the original account: User Account - Delete in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

A:BSOD - Special pool memory corruption

This is (most likely) a malware issue or a corrupted driver IMO. This is also a Driver Verifier enabled minidump - please include information such as this in future posts. Please describe, in detail, what you've attempted to do to fix the issue - including links to any other online work.

Also, it's not usually sufficient to diagnose a Blue Screen issue from just one mini-dump - so please include all minidumps when posting here.

Please post over in the malware forums to ensure that your system is clean. The reason for this is the unidentified driver apx1gadg.SYS The forums are located here: http://www.techsupportforum.com/f50/

Once assured that you're clean, then try this:

Check to see if you have a program called Counter Spy installed. If so, uninstall it (making sure that you have other protection available if that's the only one you have on your system). The BSOD points to sbapifs.sys - a component of Counter Spy.

Finally, once you've accomplished all of this, ENSURE that you've turned Driver Verifier off. Leaving it on will make the system more unstable.

Here's the analysis:

Hi, trying to be quick before I BSOD again.

Recently had problems getting multiple BSODs, even though I haven't changed any hardware.

I got the aforementioned BSOD error and ran verifier to see the driver problem.

spqp.sys is the only one that came up that wasn't loaded it said "never loaded". I did a Windows Search for it and could not find it.

I don't know what to do know. Thanks in advance.

A:Special Pool detected memory corruption

Can you access the hard drive long enough to get a hold of the contents of the C:\Windows\Minidump folder? If so, zip it up and upload it to your next post.

What settings did you use when running Driver Verifier?

If the spqp.sys file was never loaded, then it's not likely to be a current problem. But a google for it doesn't reveal any results - which makes it suspicious IMO. Try posting over in the Malware forum for assistance: http://www.techsupportforum.com/f50/

Dear Tech Support,

I think my computer has serious problems. I don't know what is wrong with it because it is very fast and works very good. But something it just crashes out of the blue and gives me BSOD. Mostly the BSOD is Memory Management or IRQL not less or equal.

I have followed your BSOD Posting Instructions. The OS on this computer is Windows 7 (32 bit), before I had Windows Vista as standard OS on it. The computer is approximately 4 years old, with "Intel (R) Core? 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz 2.40 GHz" processor and 3 GB RAM Memory. I also have the output folder and perfmon file attachted to this thread.

Thanks in advance!

I don't see any crashdumps. You aren't using any "cleaning" software are you? The problem with them is they'll clean up crashdumps, which we need to analyze (plus most of them can end up being harmful).

These crashes were caused by memory corruption (probably a driver). Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
In other words STOP!!!
1-Memtest.

Quote:
*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

RAM - Test with Memtest86+

2-Driver verifier

Quote:
I'd suggest that you first backup your data and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

In Windows 7 you can make a Startup Repair disk by going to Start....All Programs...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc - with Windows Vista you'll have to use your installation disk or the "Repair your computer" option at the top of the Safe Mode menu .

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out. If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation (an estimate on my part).

If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.

If anybody has or eventually gets the New Inspiron 3650 (preferably the intel model, but AMD model info useful too) could you please post some info on it, specs etc.... seems to be little or none yet and I'm considering getting it to turn into a htpc.
What type of PSU, How many watts?
How much room for the GPU? Full Height or low profile?
How many fans? just the back fan?
Is there any possibility of a 2 HDD setup if you remove the disc drive?
Also the ram listed on the official site is DDR3L 1600MHz... shouldn't it be DDR4 2133MHz?
Any info on any of these questions would be greatly appreciated by me :)

Hello. I hope all is well.
I have a Dell Inspiron 9100 that I think is finally ready for the scrap yard.
Even though I backed up the data, my 9100 system still has some old files that didn't carry over with the back-up. For instance, my Outlook Express archived old emails, somehow, and now I need access to a message I receive pre-archive. It isn't in the back-up data. So, I need a way to search my old system, within the files, to find the email.

Unfortunately, that system does not provide, from what I can tell, an option to search within the file contents. So, I need to figure it out.

The only computer search option I can find is the integrated Windows Search by file name or folder.

This is important so please respond as soon as possible.

A:Can you clear virtual memory on xp home edition?

Download and save the

TSG System Information Utility (SysInfo.exe)

After it's been downloaded and saved, double-click it to run it.

Information about your computer will appear.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE text here.

-------------------------------------------------------

When a Windows XP computer doesn't have enough RAM, it relies on "virtual memory" from the hard drive - which is much slower memory than RAM memory.

It's my guess your computer doesn't have enough RAM or has too many programs running or has both.

I have solved the problem that was causing the crash but it took several attempts to solve (24 hours) there are some Mini-01.dump files created, without causing error messages or crashes and I would like to investigate these but I need someone to point me to an easer to understand plain English list of commands and the correct syntax.

The only tool there is for memory dump files is a hex editor. Or maybe a disassembler.

You have to be a very serious computer expert to make anything out of these dump files. For any normal human being they are absolutely useless.

Hi Folks,

When I start my computer, whether it is plugged into the internet or not, an instance of the svchost.exe service starts sucking up all of my CPU within about 2 minutes of booting up.

I discovered this by pulling up my task manager after quickly logging on. Note that if I boot up, wait the 2 minutes before trying to log on, my system hangs. It seems to hang within 2 minutes of booting up windows, regardless of whether I am logged on or not. If I do log in and watch the Performance tab on the task manager, the CPU usage starts gradually climbing until it is completely maxed out. I then checked the Processes tab, and see that it is one of the svchost.exe processes that is the culprit.

Any advice on how to troubleshoot / fix this?

Thanks kindly!

Is Kingston RAM KVR13S9S8/4 compatible with Inspiron 15R N5010?

A:RAM Memory for Inspiron 15r

Most likely not -- Value RAM rarely works in Dell or other brand-name systems. If you want Kingston, buy their KTD line - not KVR.

Hey, the max memory for my inspiron, Dell says is 1024 mb. So does that mean i can use a single 1gb stick, or do i have to use two 512mb sticks. It only has two slots. Thanks.

A:Inspiron 5100 memory?

How much ram is already installed on your Inspiron? There is usually a base amount of raminstalled that you as a user do not physical access to on the Inspiron. Like mine has 256Mb installed yet the available slots are empty. so if you have 2 empty slots and like 256mb installed then you have to deduct that amount from the maximum allowable. you also have to find out what the maximum amount of ram each slot will accept.

Can someone tell me how much and which memory to get for my new Inspiron 3650? It has 8GB RAM, but I can't seem to find out exactly what type to buy to add more and in what configuration. I think it has 2 slots, but I am not positive. All the Dell folks I spoke with were from India or other overseas locations, and they could not comprehend what I was asking for or did not know what I needed. I'm pretty sure it's DDR3 and perhaps 1600 is the speed, but nothing I have been able to find confirms this and there is more than one type of DDR3. I'm obviously not a techie, and I very uncomfortable opening my desktop.

Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone can help with.

There was a recent BIOS update for my Inspiron 15 7569 (01.05.00, A05) that listed this enhancement:
- Enhanced memory module compatibility
I also noticed that the new 7569 configuration with the 7th generation i7 comes with 16GB in one memory slot.  I was wondering if this new BIOS would accept a 16GB module in both slots for a total of 32GB?
Thanks,
John

I am in the process of upgrading the Inspiron 530 for my mom. It was running great but has started to show it's age.  I want to snag some new faster memory, was contemplating upgrading the processor but at this point not going to bother cause of the fact that it's an older machine, she mainly uses it for emails and the occasional web surfing session.
I see that Dell is silling RAM but feel it's a little more expensive side and was trying to find it elsewhere but see there's different speeds...So rather than get the wrong speed and have it not work, can someone point me in the right direction so I make sure I get the right memory?
Thanks

A:Inspiron 530 Memory Upgrade

You can get an E8400 CPU on eBay for a modest sum. You can get four GB of lifetime warranty memory for $50, including shipping.
The biggest improvement you can make will be an SSD boot drive; it will make the 530 seem like a whole new computer, faster than some new entry level models.

I picked up an Inspiron 660 from Best Buy as a black friday deal, model I660-6038BK. It comes with 12gb of ram, which Windows sees happily. I'm curious what it's maximum memory is. Oddly, everyone (Dell, Kingston, Crucial) says the 660 is limited to 8gb. I also see 660's on Amazon.com with 16gb of ram. I figure this is the actual maximum, but does anyone know where there's an official answer?

Well, I finally bought a Crucial pack of 2x8GB sticks (BLS2KIT8G3D1609DS1S00) and it looks like it's working just fine with 16gb.

I currently have 6GB and I'd like to increase to the max which I believe is 8GB.
Since N7110 has 2 slots i probably have one slot 4GB and another slot 2GB.
Can I add 2GB to slot 2 or i have to replace the 2GB with a 4GB?

Hi everybody,

I have an old Dell Inspiron 1100 (Celeron 2.4) with 256MB RAM (two 128MB sticks). A friend of mine gave me a 512MB stick and I happily thought that I finally would be able to upgrade the memory of my old friend. The new memory I got is:

Kingston ValueRAM 512MB 266MHz DDR Non-ECC CL2.5 200 Pin SODIMM
(KVR266X64SC25/512)

However, when I install the new memory the laptop won't start! The LED blinks for 5-10 seconds and then the computer turns off. When I put back my old memory everything works fine again. I've tried it with the new memory alone in both of the empty slots and also together with one of the two 128MB sticks. I've tried all possible combinations but the laptop simply doesn't start whenever the 512MB module is installed. What's going on? I thought this memory was compatible with the Inspiron. Am I wrong?

Cheers,
Ma

I need to upgrade the RAM of my N4010,now I have only one slot working (the other is not working) with 2gb samsung memory.
My questions are?
Does N4010 support any 8gb module? If it does, which type of DDR3 module? (I have tried Kingston kvr16ls11/8 but did not work)
If it supports up to 4gb which type of memory does it need? (I have tried Kingston Kvr13s9s8/4 but it did not work either)
Thanks in advance for your help

I am attempting to upgrade memory from 4GB to 8GB Windows 10 64 bit. I added Crucial 8GB Single DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) CL11 SODIMM 204-Pin 1.35V/1.5V Notebook Memory CT102464BF160B to the system, there is only 1 bank, and system will not boot. I thought the new memory might be bad so it ordered a new memory. Same results.  According to the Dell manual I just take out the old memory and add the new.  Any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hi there!

I've installed 4x Corsair DDR3 2GB memory modules. However, the computer will not start up now (it gives two beeps).
Does anybody know what the problem could be?

A:Memory replacement for Inspiron 560 does not work

Hi DJEEN87,
Thank you for writing to Dell Community Forum.
2 beeps indicate that the system is not able to detect the RAM's.
Please try one memory module at a time on different slots and check if the system responds.
Please try to run the on-board diagnostics, <F12> and check if you receive any error.
Please private message us the service tag of the system along with your email id, along with the result from the above step.
(Note: please don't mention the service tag or email id on the public forum as it contains your personal information).

Im looking to add more memory to my Dell Inspiron 1501, what reccomendations do you have? I need to have at least 4 gigs, Right now, I only have 1 gig. I will eventually replace, but need help adding more memory.
Thanks in advance!

A:Add memory to Dell Inspiron 1501

I always run the Crucial scanner to see what slots I have, what the maximum is, and what size chips can be added. Having low confidence in my ability to buy the correct product elsewhere I also buy from them, but I understand that they are far from the least expensive.

Hey all,
I cant get the laptop to boot.
On powering up, i will go to either to the Dell SupportAssist (?) and tells
"Memory Errors Detected. Limit Exceeded. Additional Errors will not be resolved"
Location: BANK 0, ChannelA-DIMM0
Error Code : 2000-0122
Validation : 118143

or it gets to win10 BSOD (BAD_POOL_HEADER mostly)
Any help is greatly appreciated :)
Thanks

Hi
I need help to find a proper ram module for my old dell n5040
Now it run with this module:
DIMM1: Nanya NT4GC64B8HB0NS-CG 4 gb DDR3-1333 DDR3 SDRAM (8-8-8-22 @ 609 mhz) (7-7-7-20 @ 533 mhz) (6-6-6-17 @ 457 mhz) (5-5-5-14 @ 380 mhz)
I was try to find another one, but it out of stock at local markets in Russia.
Help me to find alternative module please.
Thanks

A:Inspiron n5040 memory upgrade

ILYAILYAILYA,
Below are the system specs for the Memory in your Dell Inspiron N5040. Unfortunately, I have no information to purchase Memory in Russia except for contacting Dell Sales in your area.
Memory Specs:
Memory module connectors Two user-accessible SODIMM connectors Memory module capacities 2 GB, 4 GB and 8GB Possible Memory Configurations 2 GB, 3 GB, 4 GB, 6 GB and 8 GB Memory type DDR3 1333 MHz SODIMM (Operates at 1066 MHz) Minimum memory 2 GB Maximum memory 8 GB
The Inspiron N5040 system supports dual-channel DDR3 SDRAM with memory speeds of 1333 MHz. At 1333 MHz, the memory offers a significant increase of memory performance over previous platforms.
NOTE: Since the Front Side Bus on the HM57 chipset is 1066 MHz,the memory on Inspiron N5040 will be operating at 1066 MHz

The memory solution is implemented in a dual-channel configuration, allowing the system to have twice the memory bandwidth while using the same memory technology.
Memory modules must be installed as a perfectly matched pair to take advantage of the dual-channel memory bus. If not a matched pair, the system's memory bus operates in a single-channel configuration.

Memory Configuration
Inspiron N5040 has two user-accessible SODIMM sockets, both slots can be accessed after removing the keyboard  . Basically, when both DIMM connectors are populated, the system has optimum dual-channel performance unless channels A and B have different amounts of memory.
Inspiron N5040: DIMM Configuration Slot A         Slot B     Total Memory 2048 MB    None          2048 MB 1024 MB    2048 MB    3072 MB 2048 MB    2048 MB    4096 MB 4096 MB    None           4096 MB 4096 MB   1024 MB     5120 MB 4096 MB    2048 MB     6144 MB 4096 MB    4096 MB    8192 MB

To your question,How much RAM can my computer hold? Most editions of the Windows 7 and  Windows 8 OS are 64 bit. If you are running Starter or Home Basic, your RAM limit is 8GB. The RAM limit for Home Premium is 16GB. If you are running a 32-bit OS, such as Windows XP, Vista 32 or Windows 7 32-bit edition, you have a limit of 4GB of memory. As a side note, that's per slot! That means that can be 8gb (4gb per slot) if using a OS 32bit version and up to 16gb (8gb per slot) if 64bit is running on your laptop!Source?
