IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR WINDOWS 7 UPDATE USERS:

Q: IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR WINDOWS 7 UPDATE USERS:

DO NOT let windows update dl and instal drivers for hardware devices such as video cards, sound cards automatically. If it detects an update for a device, go download it from the manufacturers website directly, (nvidea users, nvidea has a nice little auto-detect feature on their site so you cant get the wrong driver). only let windows update dl and install updates for microsoft products only.

Preferred Solution: IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR WINDOWS 7 UPDATE USERS:

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all

When executing Windows Update, I experienced that one important update is not automatically selected to download and install.

I like to understand why this is?

Also I like to understand if I should always install all important updates, even the ones not by default selected?

In this example, the not selected update refers to MS09-054 security update. Is this a manual installed security update?
Does it not apply to me?

Thanks a lot in advance!

zx81

A:Windows Update, important update not selected

Not all users experience the issue that this update resolves. MS is providing you the oportunity to use the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" logic.

I applied the update even though I have no evidence that I need it. Yet.

Some updates will adversely affect some users. Not applying updates may adversely affect you.

What can you do? My advice - apply all updates. Unless you have a good reason not to.

Hello,
I'am downloading very important files but I'm afraid that my computer might switch off because windows update gave me a notice that the computer will switch off after an update and the maximum amount of time you can postpone the computer to switch off is 4 hours (That's what I done). I will not be able to use the computer for more than 4 hours.
So this is what I did>> I think I turned windows update off by choosing the option of 'Never check for update (not recommended).

Now the question is> Will my computer switch off within 4 hours after I leave it?
If it will, then how can I make it not switch off.

PLEASE NOTE: The download is NOT resumable.
EDIT: I'm using Windows 7.

Thank you for reading.

A:[IMPORTANT] Windows Update

In my experience if you are still using the computer at the end of that 4 hours it will give you another warning and you will be able to postpone it again for another 4 hours. Then repeat process until the download is done. I am not sure if turning updates off will have stopped the countdown.

One of my Windows updates (one of nine) failed earlier, but when I opened up my Update window again to see if I could retry, it doesn't give you the option to do it (first time in five years with this computer it has happened - ALL my updates have been successful). It shows the failed update in the Update History, but does not give you the option to install it again. How can I try to install that update again even though I can't locate the option to do it? Hi,

I have a problem with updates that try to install every time PC restart.
They give me everytime error code 80070490 and if I try to press Try again then give me error code 8024AFFF.
I try to solve the problem with Microsoft FixIt, then update was installed succesfully, but after restart they try to install it again (everytime the same update) and give the same error.

I found some solution on the net that not work for me:
1. Windows Update error 80070490
2. Error code 0x80070490 when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updates
3. Code Error 80070490 checking for Windows Updates - Microsoft Community

I not use first option becouse I not have original DVD, I have a PC with preinstalled system Windows 7 Home Premium.

Anyone have any ideo how to solve this problem?

Since it's 18 hours since you posted this with no response, I'd say it may be because you didn't provide the info that this forum requires. Run the SURT program, the sfc scan, and post the logs that are requested in the instructions found here:

I'd like reassurance that I can safely ignore these updates.

It makes sense to me, but software has gotten complex enough that I want to be sure that this update only updates Skype for Windows and that failure to implement it does not leave a gaping hole in Windows 7.

A:IE 11 windows update, mendatory for FF users?

I'd install the update.

Internet Explorer is not a standalone piece of software like Firefox or Chrome. It is a part of the Windows OS. Which is why it is a massive headache as well as a security nightmare. You are perfectly within your right to not use it, but you cannot predict when Windows will decide a part of it must run whether you know it or not. Be aware that even if you disable IE it may affect other software. (I learned that the hard way after trying to install Corel Draw. I found out the Corel installer uses IE to display the EULA. Just one example of why IE should be updated even if you don't use the browser feature.)

I'm back to running Windows 7 on my system. Along time ago, I moved the Windows 7 user profiles from c:/users/... to d:/users?... When I updated to Windows 10 (Get Windows 10), the update worked, but it created and used a new profile on the OS drive (c. Went back to Windows 7, and everything is fine. I need to know how to end up with a Windows 10 install that keeps and uses my existing user profiles. Perhaps it's a two step process... update from 7 to 10 and then reconnect or point to the old user profiles.

Thanks in advance,
Ed (petyalor)

A:Windows 7 to 10 update keeping OS on C and users on D

Normally any existing users should be kept, are you sure you do the full upgrade (keep data and applications) ? To do the full upgrade you must match the architecture (32-bit or 64-bit) and the original language of your current Windows version (not any language packs added after the installation). If there is no match you are offered a partial upgrade (keep data only) or a clean-install.

I have been having update notices popping up at the lower right corner of my puter.  These have been offered for several programs that I have installed.  I don't mind being notified, but I don't know wich program is generating these alerts.  I don't like to responding to unknown programs.  I have been unsuccessful in determining where these alerts are coming from.  I have Secunia PSI, WinPatrol, and Spybot S&D 2 among others.  I can't tell if it is coming from one of these or not.  If a program is giving me these alerts, the name should be shown on the popup.  Hopefully, someone here will recognize these messages or suggest how I can find out where they are coming from.Edit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

A:Unknown update notice

Spybot S&D 2 will not offer a great deal of help these days (delete and install a decent free Antivirus), and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free (aka MBAM) with SUPERAntiSpyware Free (aka SAS) -
These look like they could be Secunia PSI, or FileHippo update warnings, (depending on your version).

Have you checked for updates on PSI (or similar) to see if there is an update needed ?
If it is not from one of these programs, it may be a minor infection -

Post back after you check Secunia PSI for update rating, and include your Antivirus program -

Thank You -

EDIT - Revo is currently 1.95 not 1.9.5 so all seems to be a bit wrong ...................

Hi

It is possible update for all users the Windows Store apps with a local account belonging to the Administrators group?

Then, I believe that the management of updating of the Windows Store apps can also be managed only by administrators. Right? If so, how do I do this?

Thanks

Bye

A:Update the apps of Windows Store for all users

Hello Balubeto,

Store apps are owned by each specific user account, and must be updated in each specific account as well. User accounts do not share Store apps, so they can not be updated for all users from another account.

However, Store apps have automatic updating turned on for all users by default.
Windows Update - Automatic Updating - Turn On or Off in Windows 8
You could disable or enable the ability of all users to turn on or off automatic download of app updates though.
Store - Enable or Disable Automatic Download of Updates in Windows 8

Hope this helps some,

A:Any way to hide "you have hidden important updates" WGA nag banner in Windows Update?

Description of Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA)

It's pretty basic. The core of it is, they are a company that sells computer Operating System software and don't want to be ripped off. And to prevent rip-offs from updating beneficial security and other support they provide FREE, they require you run the WGA.

That isn't unreasonable.

Don't like it? Get Linux or whatever.

Users Given Just Days to Downgrade from Windows Anniversary Update One of the unexpected changes that were introduced by Microsoft with the Windows Anniversary Update is a shorter period of time during which users can perform a downgrade and go back to a previous OS version or build Previously Microsoft was offering users the possibility of downgrading to their previous Windows version in a maximum of days after first installing Windows but with the Anniversary Update the company has decided to cut this period to just days WinSuperSite notes that by shortening Anniversary Users Update to Days Downgrade Just Windows 10 Given from 10 the rollback period to days Microsoft can help recover more space on the target device faster than before as the rollback recovery files obviously eat up space which is kind of Users Given Just 10 Days to Downgrade from Windows 10 Anniversary Update important for devices with small storage No Users Given Just 10 Days to Downgrade from Windows 10 Anniversary Update reason to downgrade The company has already confirmed in a statement that this change has indeed been made in the Anniversary Update because it discovered that the majority of users perform the downgrade in the first days after installing Windows anyway so there was basically no reason to keep the -day deadline and use much more space during this whole time for nothing Based on our user research we noticed most users who choose to go back to a previous version of Windows do it within the first several days As such we changed the setting to days to free storage space used by previous copies a company spokesperson is quoted as saying For the moment it s not yet clear how many users actually want to downgrade from Windows Anniversary Update but there s basically no reason to do it mostly because this update comes with a long list of new features and improvements over the base version of Windows It remains to be seen how the community sees this new silent change and as usual get ready for a new round of criticism aimed at the company for not announcing this before the public launch of the Anniversary Update Click to expand nbsp

A:Users Given Just 10 Days to Downgrade from Windows 10 Anniversary Update

You can still get Windows 10 for free by using Windows 7 and 8 keys

The free Windows 10 upgrade offer ended on July 29th. At least that?s what Microsoft says, but users have found a number of ways to to upgrade to Windows 10 for free since then. We explained how to do this via the assistive technologies loophole a couple of days ago, but today you can add a new method to the list: simply use a Windows 7 or 8 key.

Microsoft has made a big hubbub regarding the end of its free upgrade offer on July 29th, but so far very little seems to have actually changed. Those that have ?reserved? or went through the install process of Windows 10 still have their free licenses even if the they reverted back to older versions of Windows. Meanwhile new users can still join the Insider program and get a copy of Windows 10. Even those stuck on Windows 7 or 8 aren?t actually stuck.

According to Mary Jo Foley and a number of users online, old retail keys for Windows 7 and Windows 8 still work and can be used to activate Windows 10. This seems to work both with ?never used? licenses, as well as those that activated previous copies of Windows.

Of course this is exactly the way the upgrade process worked before the July 29th deadline, when users could register their existing keys and get the new operating system activated. Microsoft did not comment on when this behavior might disappear, though it makes sense for the company to take a slow approach and give people more time to upgrade to Windows 10, even if they?re saying something different publicly.

After all, Microsoft recently announced that it would miss its target of 1 billion Windows 10 installs by 2018, so giving existing users more time to upgrade seems like the least Microsoft can do to mitigate that.

That being said if you haven?t upgraded to Windows 10 yet, you really should take advantage of all of these loopholes, even if you then go back to an older version of the OS. And the sooner the better, because there?s no knowing when some of these might disappear.

This is an urgent post, so am going to make this short.

Microsoft has released another update to Windows 8 users to 'silently' install 8.1, even if it's not wanted. You must choose the update shown & select to 'Hide Update" if the change is unwanted.

This makes the 2nd time in 3-4 months that MS has pulled this stunt. Details of update below.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3008273

EDIT: This is a revised version of a previous update that I hidden earlier. When I checked to see hidden updates, there were none on the list. So this was an action taken by Microsoft, unhiding updates that consumers doesn't want. This isn't the first time this has happened, and rest assured, it won't be the last. I recommend that Windows 8 users who doesn't want to upgrade to check updates each & every month.

Hello, everyone. This is my first post. I have been in touch with Microsoft 3 times to ask this question and each time I get referred on to someone else. I would have thought that the answer would have been straight forward so I looked around and found you guys. I guess you can tell from the "title" what I was asking about but here it is anyway.

"will the free download of Windows 8.1 (for existing Windows 8 users) be released on DVD for those with a very slow broadband connection? It would take me 48 hours to download at around 20kb/s - I really need it on disc."

I am waiting for the response to this second rewording of my question and will post Microsoft's response here. In the meantime I would appreciate knowing if anyone here has an answer.

Thanks.

Is there a way to just remove it from my system tray altogether? Or do I have to go through installing the auto-update wizard first and than turn it off?

LTCM client maybe get installed with an update & without notice. I am pretty sure it is not spyware or adware. Well technically it could be adaware but it is legit. It comes from the manufacture of computer, printer or some other legit company. I think Epson forgot to pop-up a notice about LTCM install when doing updates. Can be easily uninstalled.

Okay.
Could you give us example of what you are calling a LTCM?

Microsoft's first cumulative update for Windows 10 - KB3081424 - is causing havoc for some users. How do I know this? Because I spent a good part of my Sunday morning dealing with it, that's how.

The problem, in a nutshell, is that the update puts affected systems into an endless crash loop. The update tries to install, gets to a certain point, fails, and then displays the unhelpful "We couldn't complete the updates, undoing the changes."

If it stopped there things wouldn't be too bad, but because Microsoft now forces updates onto Windows 10 users, the OS kept trying - and failing - to install the update, which in turn placed the system into a periodic crash/reboot loop that put quite a dent in my productivity.

This is most likely Norton blocking the download. You need to go into Norton & allow this Adobe update.

Hi everyone, I have been having problems installing the kb976932 update for weeks now. I feel like I tried everything. Im about ready to take a sledge hammer to this thing!

My main question, is this really that important?

I am mainly trying to install a printer to my computer which is unsuccessful and one of the troubleshooting suggestion by the printer manufacturer is to make sure the Windows updates are installed. Idk if this could be the problem or not.

A:Is the kb976932 update really that important?

This is Service Pack 1, so it very well could be the answer. I'm not saying that it is because I can't know.

Here's an official Microsoft website for Service Pack 1:

Learn how to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Source: Information about Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 and for Windows Server 2008 R2

The official Microsoft website for Service Pack 1 has a link to download Service Pack 1 from the Microsoft Download Center:

Download Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932) from Official Microsoft Download Center

You'll see a big list of files to download. Here's some text that explains what each one is for:

Hey

Sorry if this sounds like a really amateur question, but on some websites I see links to update your drivers via a download, and since you're not installing any new hardware, what's the significance of downloading something onto one of your drivers? How does your computer run better after updating? When do you know to replace the driver you have with a new one?

A:wd ses device in the important update

I didn't get one. Did you install the SSD or did it come with your PC? If you installed it, it could be that the drivers from your old(possibly a WD?) and any registry keys are picked up by Windows update. I've noticed with Ccleaner, it shows a program that is already uninstalled sometimes in Cleaner Applications tab. I then have to go into the registry and do a recursive search for left over keys so it will stop showing up.
Or are you using an USB HDD?

I have Secunia on my Acer Windows 8 laptop. According to latest scan today it's telling me I need an update for Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) 4.x That I don't understand since I've updated the laptop every time updates have been offered unless Microsoft failed to send it. (However, I haven't undated to Windows 8.1 yet -- I always hang back on that kind of major update to see what happens with everybody else.) I might be savy about a heck of a lot of things to do with computers but I don't know anything about that particular program. I started to read some stuff on it on the net, however, there's so much disagreement on it I gave up trying to figure out what to do. I hope I can get some good advice on that issue here. HELP!

A:Might Be Missing An Update That Could Be Important

Microsoft only publishes new updates for Windows on Tuesdays at 3am but unless if you don't install those updates those updates will be offered to you later if you choose to do so manually. Windows by default installs security important updates by automatically. To see if that update was installed go to the control panel select "Windows Update" then select "View Update History" Windows is great at managing updates on it's own you can also select not to automatically install Windows updates, and choose which ones to update and install. There is no need for 3rd party software to do this for you.

Hi Desmodus

You could:

1) Ignore the failed update for a while & expect a patched update to fix it in a week or so, or -->

2) Try shutting off the Windows Update service, clearning WU temp files, and then restarting the WU service, as in the Microsoft procedure quoted below:

Quote:

To stop the Windows Update service
(You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps).
1. Open Administrative Tools --- by clicking Start, Control Panel, System and Maintenance, and then Administrative Tools.
2. Double-click Services. Administrator permission required. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. Right-click the Windows Update service, and then click Stop.

To delete temporary update files
1. Open Computer --- by clicking Start, and then clicking Computer.
2. Double-click the local hard disk where Windows is installed, typically drive C.
3. Double-click the Windows folder, and then double-click the SoftwareDistribution folder.
4. Double-click the DataStore folder to open it, and then delete all files and folders in the folder. Administrator permission required. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
5. Click the Back button. In the SoftwareDistribution folder, double-click the Download folder to open it, and then delete all files in the folder. Administrator permission required. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

To restart the Windows Update service
(You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps).
1. Open Administrative Tools --- by clicking Start, Control Panel, System and Maintenance, and then Administrative Tools.
2. Double-click Services. Administrator permission required. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. Right-click the Windows Update service, and then click Start.

3) Peruse the details of the Update, in case you have are using one of the programs that require extra steps for this time-zone update to work properly: --- http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=942763 --- links to direct downloads for the various flavors of the update are also available from that KB article.

4) Use the System Restore feature of Vista to restore your system files to a state prior to the installation of the latest patches, and try again.

If you have success with any of these, post back with your results so that other folks experiencing the same trouble can benefit from your solutions.
Thanks!

Best of luck

A:Cannot Install 'Important' Security Update

I have no idea what may be causing your problem, but you could try getting the update from the Windows Catalog site and see what happens; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323166/en-us

If this works, you will be able to download an .exe file which you just doubleclick on to install. Be sure to read the instructions before using this method.

Alternatively, you could check your Add/Remove list first, just in case the update is already there, or you could run the Secunia Online Inspector, which will confirm whether or not the patch is missing. You will need an up to date version of Sun Java before the Inspector will run; http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/

I know this isn't the 'Email' section. However, more people watch this section so I'm posting here. I started to experience 'Mail' problems in my new, (Jan.), notebook with Win8. The emails I sent were going into the Outbox folder & remaining there. I figured out how to delete them by turning off the Wi-Fi connection. But then someone in the forum told me about updating my apps. I hadn't physically updated any apps since I bought the notebook. Suffice to say after the 'Mail' app had been updated everything started to work ok plus new features which made it easier to operate. So important to update all your apps!!!!

Good morning,

Several weeks ago I received an update for Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5. Unfortunately when WinPatrol asked permission to accept these new updates, I mistakenly clicked no.

I have looked for ways to undo my mistake: I checked my list of installed updates and found 2 Hotfixes for .Net Framework 3.5, KB953595 and KB958484. Also the Firefox addons window shows a new addition: .Net Framework Assistant 1.0. I have searched for the appropriate updates on the Microsoft Update website, but only became lost and confused.

I believe these .Net Framework updates are important for my computer and should be reinstalled correctly. However, I do not know which updates to uninstall nor the correct .Net update to reinstall.

Will someone please advise?

Thank you,

Vaesther

Hi windows8newb Even if avast! is your Antivirus, you can also use Windows Defender to scan your system, so it would be a good idea to keep it's definitions updated. Follow the instructions below please.System File Checker (SFC)Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply; On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select Run as AdministratorOn Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin); On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);Enter the command below and press on Enter;sfc /scannowNote: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Entercopy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't contains the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

I'm not sure if this update is required for my system configuration or if there is some issue that needs to be detected and resolved.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Regards

A:Failed Install KB2965788 - Important Update

My understanding that some system may require this KB and some don't.
My system do not have KB2965788 installed.

My laptop currently settings update changing only--help? important to updates has all the default update setting checked so it installs all optional recommended and important updates Is it okay to changing update settings to important updates only--help? change the setting to install only important updates What changing update settings to important updates only--help? are the recommended and optional updates I will not be getting What are the pros and cons of changing this setting I am wanting to do it because I do not want windows I do actually already have the windows update installed in my update list It apparently downloaded in December However my laptop never upgraded to windows I have read that for some changing update settings to important updates only--help? people their computers randomly upgraded to windows without them telling it to but for some people that never happens I am hoping I can keep it from happening by changing my update setting to download important updates only But I only want to do that if it won't cause any problems I do know I can uninstall and hide the windows update number but in all the research I did nearly everyone who said they did that said the update installed again anyway and there is actually no way to get rid of it Thank you

A:changing update settings to important updates only--help?

First of all, you don't need to Install Windows optional updates.
Secondly, you should change your Windows Update Setting to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them".

After you have changed the Windows Update Setting to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them", Windows Update will search again for available updates.
When the search is complete, look for KB3035583, and hide this update.

The Disadvantage is that you have to manually search for Windows Updates.
But the Advantage is that you have more control of which of the Windows Updates is being Installed on your Laptop.
