When I turn on my computer all I get is a black screen with the flashing cursor up in the left corner of the screen. Any ideas as to how to correct this? I have a Dell from he'll computer-- inspiron E1505 about 8 years old and just had windows 7 home edition installed on it
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Hey I just went through something very similar. I found that my SATA cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard had failed. I replaced it with a new SATA cable, and it booted right up. Try the cable first if you have one lying around, plus its a cheap solution. If you replace the cable and it still won't boot up, it might be your hard drive. Seeing as how your machine is that old, it could fail at any time.
Do you get anything on the screen when you turn it on?
My Acer has a black screen flashing mark upper left corner just after the opening screen, it just happened ,can I get some help thx ....
First backup any files you want off of the computer with an Ubuntu Live CD saving to an external USB HDD/Flash Drive.
If you have a Windows 7 DVD or Restore CD put that in the computer and choose your language and then Restore Your Computer.
If you do not have a disc, then you probably have a restore partition. Restart the computer on the logo screen when you see the message Press (Key) to Enter E-Recovery do so, this will restore your computer to Factory Defaults. Be sure to backup first.
This is my first time posting here Please forgive my ignorance as I'm super with cursor logo Black after upper Dell flashing in corner screen not tech-savvy at all I'm going to try to explain what's going on as best as I can to see if anyone can throw me a bone here I have a Dell Inspiron about years old and it's worked just fine up until yesterday I plugged my Canon camera into the front USB port to Black screen with flashing cursor in upper corner after Dell logo grab some photos off of it when my computer froze I had Black screen with flashing cursor in upper corner after Dell logo to hold down the power button to get it to shut off I restarted and found that after the Dell logo comes up the screen goes black except for a white cursor that flashes in the upper right hand corner This has been going on since last night The only two options it gives me appear during the Dell logo screen when I can hit either F for the boot menu or F for startup menu Once the screen goes black and I see that cursor key punching does nothing I'm not sure if this is worth mentioning but at one point I somehow Black screen with flashing cursor in upper corner after Dell logo found myself at a memory diagnostics menu and it ran and found no errors but then froze at I have no idea how I was able to do that and I can't find it again Sorry if I left out any info Anyone have an idea on what I can do to start troubleshooting
Have you tried unplugging everything from the computer except for mouse and keyboard?
You may attempt a Startup Repair
Are you able to boot into safe mode? Safe Mode
If you have another computer, you can burn Memtest to a disk and run memory diagnostics.
RAM - Test with Memtest86+
got hijacked last night and run spybot and full virus scan and when finished i restarted the computer and got a black screen with the flasing cursor in the left top.. Tried to start in safe mode (f8) and it willnt go to safe mode just the same screen...any suggestion???
Use Vista DVD or the HDD recovery partition to boot into Recovery Environment.
1st try "System Repair". If no-go, then try "Windows System Restore"

My computer is about Screen in + Underscore Upper Corner White Black Left a year old now Black Screen + White Underscore in Upper Left Corner built by me and my dad Recently it's been having some issues though-- for a while I think it was over heating causing it to reboot At least I hope it was just overheating One time when I booted up my computer it told me overclocking failed which was odd because I hadn't messed with any of the settings all still defaults But heres the major issue If you boot it up after the BIOS it'll give you a black screen with a blinking underscore up in the left corner If you're quick enough you can get it to go into safe mode etc You can also choose which drive to boot from--- I found that it only gives you the black screen with certain drives But I did notice that its very slow when you have the quot loading quot screen for windows-- it'll slowly fade in and start loading then it goes to a normal speed Specs IntelCore CPU GHz Nvidia GTS MB GB RAM although I can't use it all Don't know much about my mobo except its a P K
I could be a memory issue. Try removing RAM one stick at a time and seeing if any of them are causing it. Then try them individually in each slot. It could be the motherboard if only one slot is faulty.http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f10/black-screen-white-underscore-in-upper-left-corner-275185.html

Hi, suggests it's not seeing your disk at all - nothing to boot from.
Check your connections, check your disk - e.g. using a live boot disk or connect it to another PC.
If you can manage to read it again, run chkdsk on it.
I get home this afternoon and started up my Dell desktop Dimension 4600 just gave me a blank screen with a flashing cursor in the upper left hand corner. I tried to get to the "setup" (F12) and I got a "keyboard failure." Can I get my desktop back?
Try booting up and hitting the F8 key. Then choose the Last Known Good Config option and see what that does for you.http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f10/solved-blank-screen-with-flashing-cursor-in-upper-left-578799.html

Hey guys I have a Song Vaio RBG- I believe with XP I was using google images when I clicked on a picture and got a fake anti virus pop up It wasn t the normal one I ve seen quite a few times so I alt f closed it and immediately ran my AVG virus scan That found nothing so I ran Malwarebytes which found infected files Two were in the registry and two were in my temporary internet files I believe Then I had it remove them and it said I needed to reboot to safely remove the files I did that and Black XP top with left in corner cursor screen - when the computer started back up it Black screen with cursor in top left corner - XP showed the initial Sony Vaio screen and then it goes straight into a black screen with a blinking cursor at the top left corner The fan in my computer will run pretty loudly for about a minute and then slow back downto normal At this point I m not able to do anything None of the F keys do anything I tried ctrl alt del and that has no effect either I can t get into safe mode or recovery console or anything like that I ve been researching google for the last hour on this and all the fixes involve just going into safe mode or using a repair cd which I do not have Does anyone have any other suggestions Thankshttp://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/377546/black-screen-with-cursor-in-top-left-corner-xp/
Hi, I have an Acer laptop - Aspire 5315-2470 and when my son turned it on it goes to the Acer screen and then goes to black screen with cursor in the left hand corner.
I have tried to reboot in safemode but all I get is beeping noises. I also read in the manual on how to restore the computer back to day one we bought it, by holding ALT and F10 upon turning on . All I get is the same beeping noises.
This computer is only 1 year old , so if someone can give me any advice on how to fix this I would be very happy.
Thanks In Advance...
Look at your BIOS settings. The Acer screen may tell you how to access the BIOS (boot) settings with a function key - probably F2. Press that F2 or whatever it tells you when the Acer screen comes up. When the BIOS screen displays, make sure the "boot from" setting is your hard disk. If not, change it.
I don't know if this is the correct place to post this question. My daughter was using my MSI laptop and when she tried to start the computer all that came up was a black screen with the cursor in the upper left corner. She selected the restore option which came up because the other options would not do anything.
Is there any possible way to recover my files, pics, etc. or is it just gone now? I'm really upset because I had five years of photos of my grandchildren. =(
Any help at all is greatly appreciated.
When I turn on Lenovo thinkpad desktop it comes to the Gateway screen then to a black screen with the cursor at top left corner. F8 is not working - whether pressing intermittently or holding down so I can't get to safe mode. F2 was working ( set up menu ). But it has now quit working. When holding down F2 or F8 it just starts beeping. Where do I go from here?
What model Thinkpad?
Hello , my computer won't start up to windows . I do not have the cd to restore my computer . I have a compaq windows xp computer . I believe it has to do something with a program called norton ghost that I was running , it froze so I restarted the computer and I chose to start windows normally . The blank screen then came up with the blinking cursor on the top left corner . Is there any possible way I can fix this problem myself ?
Norton Ghost is a Clone/Imaging software to clone your existing HDD to a different HDD. What exactly were you trying to do?
Boot off of the Windows Disc Or download the Recovery Console ISO. Burn it to CD with IMGBurn Boot off of the CD and get to the Recovery Console. Here type chkdsk /R and press enter. Disk Check Outside Windows (Windows XP) The Check Disk utility will try and fix any file errors.
You can also download the ISO image for Seatools, or DriveFitness in my signature and burn the image to a CD using IMGBurn also in my signature and boot off of the newly created CD and run the Quick and Advanced tests on the HDD to test the integrity of the drive.

Can you not borrow Windows 7 install media from a friend? Make sure it is of the same version (including SP1 if applicable), otherwise there could result more issues.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/413889/laptop-hanging-on-black-screen-flashing-cursor-top-left/

My cursor blinks in upper left corner of monitor. Removed battery, replaced, did not work. What do I do now?
The hard drive is probably bad. This is a laptop? The blinking cursor means that the computer can't find a boot device, like a hard drive or CD/DVD drive
Good evening I m hoping some can offer some advice on this rather troublesome problem I have a Dell laptop that was recently formatted XP Home was re-installed from the original Dell ReInstallation CDs Everything has been working perfectly for the past month However this past weekend we re now unable to boot into Windows When powering the machine on the Dell logo appears as normal When the Dell logo disappears instead of the Windows splash screen appearing a flashing cursor appears in the upper left hand corner Nothing else After letting the machine sit for approximately -minutes an error message never appears I ve already attempted a Boot, Left Cursor Top Not in Corner Will XP Flashing few things Removed the drive attached it to a XP Will Not Boot, Flashing Cursor in Top Left Corner working computer via USB adapter There I performed a scan disk No error messages appear Placed the hard drive back into the Dell laptop Inserted the Windows XP ReInstallation CD to access the recovery console FIXMBR completed successfully however the problem continues Verified that the system BIOS recognizes the drive and correct drive size parameters I really don t know what to do Apparently the repair install function is not available with the Dell OS ReInstallation CD Can someone throw a hint or two I m almost out of gas on this one and need to have it running again ASAP nbsp

Product name: HP G62 Notebook PCProduct number: XG960UA#ABAOperating system: Vista I am not getting an error message or any message whatsoever. My computer was fine all day long til it started running a little slow, so I decided to restart it. When I restarted it, it acted like it was going to start up then it went to a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. I have tried restoring the computer back to factory settings but there is no option for that when I press F10.

When I try to restart windows it is taking me upto the HP boot options then I get a blank screen with a cursor at the top left corner.
The following did not work,
1) Booting via the recovery disk
2) Booting via recovery hard disk
3) I created a USB boot with Ubuntu and even the USB is not getting detected.
I dunno what happened to the PC whether its the work of a virus or bios issue. Please Help
Did you change the bios to boot from the USB or disk before the hard drive?

Have you tried to boot into safe mode? You'll need to find out what key does this (maybe f8) and try at startup. pahoo31http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f10/blank-screen-with-flashing-cursor-in-the-top-left-201134.html

******SOLUTION******:This website and faq pretty much sums up what I've been experiencing.
current hypothesis is the 137gig limit in the bios, in coordination
with the XP SP2's ability to go above 137gigs. Using acronis I was able
to transfer upgrade( awhile back ) from an 80gig drive to this 160gig
drive. All was well until these issues popped up. I think as the drive
utililization grew, I started having problems with my bios's lack of
LBA48( >137 gig ) support. It's almost like I'm getting address
aliasing/wrap around problems after the drive started filling up. For
the Inspiron 8500 there is no bios yet that handles LBA48 correctly, so
I downsized my partition to 100gigs using Disk Manager and all seems to
be well so far. If you search on this problem, it seems it's common on
a lot of laptops that were made before 2004 and/or people not updating
their bios. I've not heard this solution, so I hope it gets
investigated more. I welcome comments on this !! -Lee

Hello, my computer will freeze every 2 hours or so and I have to restart it by holding down on the power button.
Then when I restart it I get a black screen with white underscore in the top left corner. Or sometimes a screen that says no boot device available.
I can still start the computer by going to boot menu and choosing HD at the start of setup. But if I don't press f8 then my comp will not boot up.
I don't have a clue whats wrong with it. I had to reinstall vista but still the same problems. Please help.
i have hp omni 105 pc and when i switch on the computer ...... it shows a black screen with a sign at top left corner. the sign moves a little down and after some time computer starts up...........
is it a sign of any thing bad in my comp?
It's not booting to your Hard Drive. You can set the boot order in your BIOS. It is either F1, F2. Delete, F5, sometimes F10. HP usually uses F10, try that first.
Then set your boot order as follows:
CD/DVD first, Hard Drive second, then it does not matter after that.
Also, in your BIOS you will be able to see if your Hard Drive is being detected, if not, try unplugging the power and Data cables and plugging them back in, HP's are notorious for dropping the Hard Drive, you have to buy new SATA cables constantly. You may need to do this.
Hi fellas I have a Dell Dimension which stopped working three years ago It was running Windows XP with SP or - I can t remember for sure It has GB RAM and a MB ATI Radeon graphics card Whenever I boot up it goes straight to a black screen with a flashing cursor on the top left There is no Dell splash screen and no option to access the BIOS by tapping F This Dell has four indicator lights on the back to let a user know No Flashing Screen, Cursor, POST Black Screen if there is a problem The first three Black Screen, Flashing Cursor, No POST Screen lights are green and the fourth one in orange I looked this up on the manual and it says refer to technical support So far I have tried the following Removed optical drives to see if the machine would boot up without them - it didn t I am not confident enough to start taking parts off the motherboard just yet Booted up without any additional peripherals attached including mouse and keyboard Tried booting up from an old Windows XP install disc - that had no effect either So I am pretty much stumped as to what to do with this machine Doing a Google search others with the same problem have been unable to fix it I just want to know if it is worth the time to revive this machine or to let go Any help would be appreciated Thanks nbsp
Need help..my computer will not boot up ,,,all i get is that it detects the hardware then the flashing cursor on the top left side of screen. NO windows logo. I have read the other similar posts but for some reason i can not get into safe mode. I have an old asus a7v8x-mx motherboard with a amd 2100. I have reformatted another harddrive i had laying around and it works great with the computer so that eliminates everything but the harddrive i originally had in there. i want the information on that harddrive so reformatting that one is out of the question. I have the operating system disk , i was thinking of repairing it but i am not sure??????Any help will do Thanks
Install your old hard "damaged" drive as a Slave. Use you reformatted drive as master and boot the OS from it. Then see if you can read your Slave drive and get what you need off it.
If not then at least you can run some dignostics from your master and see if you can get the corrupted one working.
Hi guys The other day I was using my old desktop and using firefox when suddenly firefox froze up while corner black blinking XP top screen in left hand Windows with underscore browsing and I was unable to ctrl alt del or click start or anything for that matter in order to close it down I then turned off my computer manually by pressing the power button as I sometimes do when my computer freezes and turned it back on Unfortunately Windows XP black screen with blinking underscore in top left hand corner when I turned it back on the computer is stuck on the black screen with the blinking underscore in the top left hand corner I unfortunately am not good with computers and would like to avoid reformatting my computer as this old desktop contains the largest amount of my media such as music and movies that I had been meaning to put onto an external hard drive Furthermore I do not have an XP installation disc and am unable to locate the system recovery discs that came with the PC like I said it's old circa and they are most likely lost somewhere in the house or thrown out by now Thank you for all the help and support in advance
if you haven't tried, as you switch on press the F8 key up and down repeatedly, if this works you will be at the safe mode menu - try last known good config. If still no go, try booting to BIOS - if this doesn't work I would say hard drive issue. Download the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic program, this has to be burned to a disk. Then put the disk in and let it boot the pc and run the test.http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f10/windows-xp-black-screen-with-blinking-underscore-in-top-left-hand-corner-594588.html

Firstly: try to boot in Safe mode ( Press F8 during startup and select safemode) Does it boot normaly now?
Also: when pressing F8 during startup you could also get the option to "Repair your computer". Click that and go to startup repair.

First of all I am No Expert (disclaimer) but may be I can be of some help.
If the laptop was working fine for years and then out of nowhere went berserk ... that is kind of odd ... but I suppose it can happen ... I am assuming you left the laptop "On" while you were gone ... if it was showing a Black Screen when you came back ... now you might have gotten a power surge of some sort ...
Or may be a Bios glitch which I read somewhere awhile ago ... so do the following ...
1) Remove the battery and disconnect the power cord from the Laptop.
2) Press the power button for a few Second (While Battery Out and Cord Off from the Laptop).
3) Connect the power cord First. Press the power button to start and THEN dock the battery.
Did this fix your problem ... if so, you are good to go ... if not then ...
1) Try to reboot into "Safe Mode" ... on my laptop when I restart it I Tap repeatedly on F8 key till the Safe Screen pops up ... then choose "Fix My PC" or "Repair My PC" the minimum option and let it do it's thing ...
If you got a Normal Start-up ... then you are good so far ...
So, do a Normal Restart ... and see if your laptop comes up Normal ... if so, you are out of Hot water ... if not repeat Step 1 till you get to Normal Windows ... then
2) Go to System Restore ... and see when was your Automatic System Restore Point ... Tick "SHOW Older Ones" too and see which one you want to Revert back to that date ...
Do a restart normal again, if fixed then you are good.
I added couple of Disk Check links below since your brother suspects a Hard Drive Issue ... run those to make sure your HD is OK ...
How to Check Your Hard Drive for Errors in Windows Vista - For Dummies
Check your hard disk for errors
The How-To Geek Guide to Using Check Disk in Windows 7 or Vista
If none of these Solve your problem then probably you have to do a Clean "Recovery Startup" basically it will Clean wipe your laptop to Original Factory Setup ... I assume HP has a Recovery Partition ... like Partition D ... like in my Gateway ... it reinstalls Fresh from there ...
Post back your results.
Machines were running fine until someone took out a power pole down the road.
When power resumed, powered my machines back up. 2 out of 3 did OK. The third goes immediately to a black screen with a flashing cursor in the upper corner.
1 removed and reseated the power and data cables from the hard drive

Help!!!! I have a Dell Inspriron 537s, when I turn the computer on it goes to Dell screen the bar fills up and then it goes to a black screen with a white cursor and doesnt go past that. I upgraded to Windows 10 about 6 months ago and everything has been fine with it. I have looked online and there are a few things i have tried, press the windows button + p, and nothing has worked. Any suggestions????
What color is the power button and is it steady or blinking?
When was last time you replaced the motherboard battery? It's a CR2032 3-volt coin cell battery, ~$2.00
It all started screen Black flashing with cursor when files amp Black screen with flashing cursor folders went missing they weren't in the recycle bin amp or in any other part of the system I then decided to do a system restore which was successful After a few hours I went to turn on my computer the dell logo comes up amp then goes to a black screen with a flashing cursor at the top left side I turned it off amp on again the dell logo screen has an F amp F option I have clicked F amp carried out a PC diagnostics thorough test which passed so I assume the problem is the Windows operating system I do have a backup disk of my own which I created amp also an external backup drive unfortunately I'm not having much luck with these unless I'm not booting them right This is how I've done it - All other USB connections ie printer etc are disconnected except for monitor mouse keyboard amp external backup drive - I switch on computer dell logo comes up with F amp F option - I click on F which leads to a box asking me to 'Please select a boot device' the options are hard disk cd DVD rom USB hard disk diagnostics amp enter setup - I click USB hard disk which leads to the black screen with white text 'booting Linux' this then leads to the NTI Backup Now EZ box this asks me to press the restore button to begin restoring the computer amp also to select alternative restore point if needed - when I click restore it is carried out successfully but then when it restarts the black screen with flashing cursor reappears - I tried the F option which leads to a BIOS screen Black screen with flashing cursor amp tried booting from there amp changing the booting sequence order but it still leads to the NTI Backup Now EZ box asking me to restore

Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot
I have an Acer Apire 5100. I have tried to set back to factory settings. The system began to restore ran to about 85% complete then shut down. The problem there was the system was booting up in XP and the laptop was purchased with Vista. Now the screen is black with the cursor flashing in tp left corner. Any suggestions?
so my daughters computer..she got a virus or something that made her have to specify "open with" I used the acer recovery system and had it revert to a date a couple of weeks ago seemed great. it was online and everything seemed fine i then...downloaded spybot search and repair...took hours then had a result screen wich quickly turned of..then a flash of blue screen to quick to read..then to a black screen with flashing cursor NOT moveable...this now happens during start up and wont budge..i can get into the bios info using F2..tried restoring settings..nothing..changed boot drive to an external dvd drive installing recovery disks twice to no avail.....sorry its an acer aspire one netbook runing windows 7
Hi michelletaylor, welcome to SevenForums !
This might seem silly but I have exactly the same problem with my laptop. I'm stuck at the page right after the manufacturer logo, the white line blinking page. One thing you can try is see if everything is alright in the BIOS settings by pressing F2 in the first page. You can also try pressing F12 or the key to access the boot options. Try to run a diagnostic scan. If it asks for an extended scan, say yes, it should take about 1h to complete and this might find problems. You can also try pressing F8 to access different options to boot your computer (like safe mode), but for me, it doesn't work. I would like to help you more but I have the same problem. Hope you'll be able to make it work and have a nice day. MrDub
Mod Edit: Split from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic464825.html - Hamluis.HiI had exact same problem and done all the tests as well listed by the poster. I've have the mbr zip but cannot attach it to the reply - says Error You aren't permitted to upload this kind of file?ThanksAndrew
@ AndrewSeExactly what is the name (the extension) of the file that you are trying to attach here?A file with a .zip extension can be attached here in the XP forum, so it should not be a problem, and you should not be receiving the "Error You aren't permitted to upload this kind of file" message when attempting to do that.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/465359/black-screen-flashing-cursor-2/
Hey everyone, I recently started having the black screen with the flashing cursor come up sometimes when I start my PC. I have narrowed it down as being my 3rd HDD (2TB WD) as the culprit, which I only use as media storage. It is not set as a boot device since windows is on my SSD and when I unplug the drive from my mobo, windows always starts up without any issue.
Basically my question is, is this just a case of a hard drive going bad? I ran chkdsk on all 3 drives and none of them had any issues and it is not fragmented or anything that I can tell, so I don't know. I have had this setup for a while now and about a month ago it started doing this. The screen doesn't always come up however, so I have no clue what the issue is.
Any help would be great, thanks.
Well, it seems you found the problem; however, the why may be a bit more difficult. So you can start off by running some additional diagnostics on that particular hard drive, check the smart data to see if there are any spin up timeouts, and possibly swap the SATA cables (with a known good cable), and if none of those work, you could try moving the HD to a different SATA port if available. Good luck.
Hello I m currently writing this from another laptop I have a Gateway Netbook that runs on Windows starter The problem first arised when I went to access a tumblr blog that I usually visit but up flashing Black cursor with Screen during booting it was loading incredibly slow so I walked away from my computer a moment When I returned firefox had crashed and when I went to try and minimize the screen I saw that all of my desktop shortcuts were gone as well as from the startup menu I went to restore the firefox and noticed that the page was trying to redirect me to a malware site something biz and an account cnn in the url as well I immediately reacted by rebooting my laptop so that I could start up in safemode but what I got was just a completely black screen with a small flashing cursor Nothing else What I did next was burn the avira rescue program onto my usb flashdrive after reformatting it and I opened the bios menu so that I could boot up from my usb and use the program My netbook doesn t have a cd drive I ran the scan and it detected infected files as well as I believe alerts All of the files from my c drive are still there because avira scanned through them all and after it was done scanning I set it to try and repair the files and if it couldn t it would delete them I restarted the laptop removing the Black Screen during booting up with flashing cursor usb and having it boot up the way it should originally but I still have the black screen with the flashing cursor I m not sure what to do now Also I will mention that I just discovered my laptop was also infected by the google ads virus and that days ago or so I got a popup for a porn biz site ad or something I d appreciate your help thank you
Are you able to boot into safe mode?http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/425863/black-screen-during-booting-up-with-flashing-cursor/
I have an Intel DG31PR with 1 GB memory and Windows XP Home. When I turn the computer on the Intel logo and BIOS 2 settings appear then the screen goes back with a flashing cursor at the top left of the screen . I have to reboot several times before I can login. How do I stop this from happening? I am a novice, any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
Your problem sounds very unusual, but possibly related to your BIOS settings.
Have you tried entering the BIOS menu on boot, and checking that the first priority boot device is your main Hard-Drive, rather than a CD-ROM, etc...
It sounds to me like the computer is trying to boot from a location other than the disc where your OS is installed.
Computer was running fine 2 days ago; now can't boot. Running XP Pro, but system goes right to a black screen with a flashing cursor. Can't get into bios.
Can't type anything...even tried holding down all different Function keys..I can hear the hard drive and fan...CONFUSED
Hi I have an older HP d SFF flashing after hdd cursor upgrade? Black screen with running WinXP I wanted to upgrade from the current Gb HDD to a new Black screen with flashing cursor after hdd upgrade? Gb and used the Seagate disk wizard powered by Acronis Black screen with flashing cursor after hdd upgrade? to clone the old drive to the new using an external case When I swap the disks and power on I get a message reporting the new disk size is Gb - save to BIOS yes Black screen with flashing cursor after hdd upgrade? then the HP logo screen and can access BIOS if I hit F fast enough but then the screen goes black except for a flashing cursor in the top left I am unable to type or do anything at that point except Ctrl Alt Del This is the same whether or not I go to the Bios it does the same thing on exiting BIOS Unfortunately I do not have the media for my legit XP installation as I didn t come with the machine when I bought it but I have the sticker with the code Is there anyway to get the new disk running without having to pay for a new copy of XP I had thought the cloning would get around this as the program says if the old disk was bootable the new one will be too The SFF case does not have room for two HDDs or I d just install it as a slave Thanks in anticipation I have solved many probs before by searching this great site but can t find this one nbsp
My computers worked fine up until a few days ago. I was using it like normal and it abruptly BSODd on me with the error system_service_exception. Following the restart, the computer would not boot. It shows the logo but then doesn't boot. It is stuck at the black screen with the blinking cursor. I have tried repairing it with my windows 7 disk by checking start up and everything else available on the cd. All the tests say it should be fine. Also when i try to system restore it ends up failing. Can anyone give me any advice. Thanks in advance.
I have a Dell desktop computer with Vista installed. I bought it 2/2009. In July 2010, I went to get on the computer, and apparently it restarted for some reason but all I had was a black screen with a flashing cursor. I called Dell and they had me turn off the computer, unplug all external hardware plus the ether net cord. Then I unplugged the power cord from the back and pressed the power button for 10 seconds. Then I plugged the cord back in, powered it up, and it worked. The only problem is that every time it reboots, that is exactly what I have to do. Is there any way to fix this permanently???
holding the button down with no power is to discharge the energy on the main board and power supply, don't think it does anything else, is your system well grounded? if so then it could be a hardware problem, but Dell techs would know best
If you are brave and want to take a shot in the dark you could try a factory reset. On startup screen with the Dell logo , hold down Ctrl key, and at the same time tap F11 over and over. If you are quick then next screen will be a blue screen which will prompt you and ask if you wish to continue with factory reset. Click yes and continue ...

Did you try F8 to go into Safe Mode and see if Windows will load that way?
If so, and that does not work then I recommend that you contact Tech Support and discuss the issue with them. They may be able to resolve it relatively quickly for you.

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.
What you are experiencing can be hard to fix, but it could well be the hard drive has gone to the big computer in the sky.
This link may offer some insight, but I have to say it doesn't look promising.
Win7 won't boot, black screen with blinking cursor - Microsoft Answers
Have you contacted Dell to see if they can help?
I have an Acer aspire 5733-6607 with Intel Core i3 CPU 2.40GHz.
My mom was on it playing a game on the internet and stepped away to wash dishes when she came back it was on the black screen with the blinking cursor in the top left corner. I tried system repair disc, the recovery disc that it had me make when I first got the laptop and windows defeender offline nothing worked. I tried F8 and it goes to the black screen with acer and where I can press F2 or F12 and then back to screen with blinking cursor. I tried restoring default settings in the F2 menu also.
I was wondering if there was something someone knew that maybe I overlooked any help will be really appreciated thanks..
Unplug all USB devices from your laptop. Restart and see whether the blank screen problem remains.
It is possible that Windows refuses to boot with a USB device such as an external hard drive or a flash drive connected to your computer.
Hello I am having problems with my Dell Inspiron laptop with Windows I had turned on my computer and the Dell logo came up and it went to a black screen with a flashing cursor I was told by dell that the computer has a virus which caused this problem They would not remove the virus unless I pay them for warranty extension Sorry that is Black Cursor With Flashing [SOLVED] Screen way too [SOLVED] Black Screen With Flashing Cursor steep for me I tried to do some of the following of what I had read from other websites Tapping the F button a few times at dell logo screen to get to safe mode to access system recovery and restore Didn't work I only have F and F functions at start screen Turning on and off the computer to get to safe mode Didn't work Removed the battery and pressed and held down the power button for seconds replace the battery and turn on the computer Didn't work At the Dell logo screen pressed F function key ran diagnostics and it reads hard drive failure First time the test said the hard drive pass but before it was normal So I don't know what happened here Under the same F function clicked on CD DVD drive nothing happened and it took me back to the black screen with flashing cursor Before this happened I went here the first time and it ran some kind of test So I don't know what happened here either I tried re installing Windows but nothing happened The black screen was still there I don't have system restore or recovery disk My question is is there anyway I can get my computer back to its normal state I am pretty sure this is something very simple to remove without paying a big chunk of money to have this fixed but I could be wrong Just frustrated Thank you all for your answers
You tried reinstalling Windows 7 but the problem persists?
If you have the disc (which by the sounds of it you do), I suggest you boot to that disc again and go to Recovery Options, once in there, choose Command Prompt. Enter chkdsk c: /r
Might take a while...
Hi, new to the forum.
I'm working on a dell inspiron 1525 for a friend. It came with vista but it was loaded with virus's. I formatted the hard drive and am now trying to install windows 7. The problem is that Everything that I am trying in just going straight to a black screen with a blinking cursor at the top left corner. I have done some research on this problem but none of the comments were from new installs. Vista was working fine except for being slow so i'm not thinking anything hardware related.
I've tried booting from cd, flash drive....and its all doing the exact same thing.
Any help would be great. Thanks
First run the Dell Diagnostics from boot to test the hardware: Dell Diagnostics Utility - How to Run the . If they run then I would try to keep the Dell OEM Diagnostics partition - at Step 7 of Clean Install Windows 7 delete all partitions but it. Recovery will no longer run after reinstall so delete it too.
Use the installer provided in Step 1 of Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 burned to DVD or written to flash stick using tool in Step 2. Unplug all other HD's and peripherals, Boot the installer by tapping the F12 key at boot to choose boot device. If you get a flashing cursor it is not booting the device.
If problem persists Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. (If an EFI BIOS you'll need to decide if you want UEFI BIOS vs. Legacy BIOS. If UEFI follow these special steps for Install, otherwise enable Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module to proceed with normal install.) Set DVD drive first to boot, HD second, set SATA controller to AHCI, Save changes and Exit.
Then boot into Windows 7 installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here.
At first installer screen Press Shift + F10, or enter System Recovery Options to open a Command Box, type:
SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.
In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.
After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for data, etc. in Disk Mgmt. You are creating the partition here for the purpose of wiping the HD and marking Active which overcomes certain install failures.

I have a similar problem to this forum
I tried following some of the instructions that was given to this person but I think I need more personalized help to mine. I am not able to get the computer past that black screen. I do not have a Windows 7 disk but I was able to make a recovery disk from another computer. From there, I am able to get to the System Recovery window. The only thing I've tried to do is a System Restore but that doesn't seem to fix my problem.
I'd appreciate any help I can get. These malware viruses are awful.

I have since learnt my problem is OS related I have started another thread in OS section Can this be deleted Hello Apologies for the long post I hope this is in the right area and that someone might know what is wrong with my card I recently bought a PC from Zoostorm and I ve been happy with it so far as it s such an upgrade from the last one I had I was also pleased that it contained an ATI card as I d had a few problems with Nvidia in the past But recently things haven t been going so good and no matter how many searches I do I can t seem to find someone with the same problem as me I m running a and from what I ve Flashing Loss Screen and Black Cursor read on it it appears to be particularly buggy but I m praying somewhere out there is a solution It would be such a shame to have to change it as it s less than a month old I play a lot of WoW and I ve experienced two freezes I m not sure if the music is still playing as I never have it on anyway and I didn t think at the time to check if it was affected I couldn t tab out so had to reboot both times Cursor Loss and Flashing Black Screen Another problem I ve had appears to be connected to tabbing out of the game and may be set off by my character being AFK for a few minutes I ll suddenly discover my cursor has disappeared and I ll tab out hoping to correct the issue only to find my desktop has been replaced with a black screen but several menus can be seen opening and closing namely the start menu My tab bar will be at the top of the screen I can click on the start icon but nothing happens I ve only ever been able to ctrl alt del twice and have had to shut off WoW in the process screen All other times I ve had to reset my computer This problem has also occurred outside of WoW once I literally came back from the bathroom to find a black screen and have no idea what set it off I had come out of a game a while before but had been happily browing the web before the problem occurred I intially thought that it might be a heat problem as I remember an Nvidia card suffering some weird graphical glitches that were caused by heat but this doesn t seem to be the problem I downloaded a little vista gadget that monitors my card and have been watching it closely It never rises above C and I ve only ever seen its fan come on once I m at a loss at to what to do I do have a I could replace it with but I m guessing I d forfeit my warranty by replacing a part I ve tried updating drivers but everything seems to be fine and I m currently running Catalyst which I think is the latest If anyone has any idea or even if someone has experienced the same problem I d love to hear it Any help at all would be greatly appreciated nbsphttp://www.techspot.com/community/topics/cursor-loss-and-flashing-black-screen.138089/
I was trying out the fdisk in win98 bootdisk. I created primary dos partition and formatted it. Reboot and windows xp didn't start but thats because its partition is not set active but even after set it active the black screen appear with cursor. My cddrive is broken, usb boot not supported and only floppy is possible. I dont have other computer with floppy drive.
I would try to run the fixmbr command from the XP Recovery Console.
I keep getting a black screen with cursor appear on my laptop after I leave it alone for a while (not being used). I have read many forums with similar problems but after they login or at boot, for me it just happens randomly when im not using it. I have windows 10 and recently cloned my HDD to a SSD and replaced it (not sure if that had something to do with it). I've tried ctrl + alt + del, win + P and attempting to login (again) after reading some other forums but nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any ideas of how to fix this?
Thanks a lot for any help
By the way when this happens I fix it by restarting the laptop by holding down the power buttonhttp://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/forum/windows-29/black-screen-cursor-after-being-left-not-used-4599906/
Just awhile ago my PC was running a bit slow, so I decided to reboot it since it's been probably several weeks since it was last rebooted. After the power cycle, the screen just sat there on a black screen with a non-flashing cursor in the upper left corner of the screen. I did several hard resets and power cycles, and even tried to boot from the Win7 DVD to try to reinstall Win7. Nothing.
Then after the last time I power cycled the machine, I started doing something else, and suddenly after 10 minutes or more, the Intel splash screen appeared (Intel motherboard) as normal, and finally the Windows 7 Welcome screen.
What would cause it to sit there for so long on the black screen before doing anything? I thought the BIOS was completely toast or something since it wasn't able to boot to anything. No F2, no F8, no F12, nothing. Thoughts?
Very odd! Does it reboot normally now?http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-help-support/288743-black-screen-non-flashing-cursor-least-10-minutes-boot.html
I have seen this topic posted many times in several forums but in reviewing the messages and responses none seem to apply Cursor Flashing Windows XP not - Screen, Boot Black will or resolve my situation I am posting this in Windows XP will not Boot - Black Screen, Flashing Cursor hopes of some fresh help I have a Dell Latitude D laptop era with GB IDE drive replaced about months ago running Win XP-Pro SP- One day I shut it down then the next day it wouldn t boot up No new hardware or software installed for ages perhaps other than Win amp McAfee updates The POST screen displays momentarily but then it goes black with an unmovable blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner I ve disconnected and unplugged all cables and peripherals to no avail Attempts to boot into safe mode with F key are fruitless as is Cntrl-Alt-Del key I can boot from CD via F enter BIOS set-up via F or run Dell diagnostics I ve booted from into Windows Recovery mode via the OP Disk CD and done repair and also invoked bootcfg rebuild command all to no avail black screen cursor still returns I can see no obvious command in Windows XP will not Boot - Black Screen, Flashing Cursor the BIOS that if changed might solve the problem One odd thing Windows XP will not Boot - Black Screen, Flashing Cursor however is that the hard disk capacity in the BIOS reads GB yet the capacity is GB If I had to guess it would almost seem like this is closer to what might ve been available free space on the disk as though the BIOS can t see a large portion of the disk yet when booting into recovery mode the operating system appears to be recognized on the C drive I cannot figure how to troubleshoot this however I m obviously trying to preserve and save my programs and data already on the disk I ran extensive diagnostic tests and all hardware passed all tests including the hard drive tests One exception was an error message indicating a failure of the NIC EEProm Test device Broadcom M Error code B all greek to me but seems to indicate a hardware failure in the networking circuit seemingly built into the motherboard So I spring for a new motherboard and replace it but when I boot up it indicates Invalid Configuration information amp Time-of-day not set and wants to run a set-up utility also no Dell service tag number not sure if that has any bearing The press F to continue route yields nothing but the press F to run set-up utility takes me back into the BIOS screens I reset the clock with the proper time then re-boot arrrggh - black screen with cursor again Same behaviors and actions as before I reboot into Dell diagnostics again and run extensive tests again this time no errors not even the NIC EEProm test error limited success I m thinking maybe the CMOS NVRAM data might be corrupt I check the CMOS battery weird Dell configuration but yrs old now it s rated at V and checks out at V seems okay Perhaps erroneous or corrupt information is acquired from the hard disk during boot-up and transferred into the CMOS data corrupting its addresses and stalling the boot-up I m lost unclear how to proceed from here Have I been attacked by a virus How do I troubleshoot and resolve this In checking some forums the problem seems somewhat common but others seem to have resolved it from Vista or Win- operating systems which probably have more robust recovery options Again trying to save my data if at all possible Can anyone help nbsp

I follow the recommendation here to disable secure boot in Bios then change the Bios from UEFI to CSM. But when i go to the set up all I see is black screen with a steady cursor in it. And it doesn?t go to the Bios anymore.
The black screen stays there.
I switch off the laptop and on again but still I got a black screen with a steady cursor and that?s it.
It is like that and it doesn?t go to the Windows anymore even going to the Bios I can?t.
What should i do?
After switching from UEFI mode to CSM and disabling secure boot, you will not be able to boot from HDD because the installed Windows 8 requires the secure boot and UEFI mode.
Now you can boot from the disk or other bootable medium (USB flash stick) to install the Windows 7 system.
I assume you made these changes to installed Windows 7. Right?
By the way: what notebook model you have exactly?
my laptop is not start. click on power buton it is just see black screern and curser .what i do .i am using windows 10. i am try to conver to my in dule operting system (windows 10+udntu).but i dont know what is the problem is instuling the ubntu and i get this problem .plase suggest me how to solve this problem.

Hello all first time post Earlier this week my HP desktop forced shutdown while browsing the Internet using IE Upon reboot the HP screen loaded afterwards a black screen with a flashing cursor appeared I had used CTRL mode. Cursor. Black With safe Screen Flashing Cannot access ALT DEL function in which my computer rebooted Showed the HP screen and immediately showed the black screen with a flashing cursor Again no mouse cursor was available I performed a diagnostics check in which the CPU HDD etc checked out restored BIOS to factory settings even placing the HDD as priority I inserted the Windows recovery disk and attempted a start up repair and a restore point with no favorable results Through the recovery disks command prompt I accessed all my music and documents so Black Screen With Flashing Cursor. Cannot access safe mode. I assume the hard drive is still functioning I'm thinking as a last resort of performing a repartitioning of my hard drive and performing a clean install of Windows Any ideas on what I can do to solve this problem Any help would be greatly appreciated Thank you Anthony
I've had this problem before on a clients machine and the problem was with the "MBR" (master boot record)
Have a looky over here pal, maybe this might help
MBR - Restore Windows 7 Master Boot Record
Use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows

I just purchased some new memory for my Satellite M645. Before I purchased, it look like it was the right stuff to me, but I'm not an expert. I purchased Winten WT-SD1333-D8GB. This is actually 4x2gb sticks. I installed it the way I understood it should, but windows never boots. The toshiba screen comes up but that is it. Just a black screen with a cursor in the upper left hand screen. When looking in the bios, it shows the proper amount. When I remove one stick (doesn't matter tried both) nothing changes. However when I stick one of the old sticks back in, Windows loads. The computer then sees the correct amount (2gb old + 4 gb new). Has any one seen this before?https://forum.toshiba.eu/showthread.php?93240-New-RAM-module-in-Satellite-M645-black-screen-with-flashing-cursor

Okay so, I have had a samsung N135 mini laptop for a year and a few months & just recently I turned it on and after the samsung logo comes up it goes to a blank black screen with a white blinking cursor at the top left side of the screen. And when I try to go into safe mode it brings me directly back to that black screen. ALT+CTRL+Delete does not work! And when I press system recovery it goes to the black screen, any ideas on what I should do before going to get the hard drive replaced? (If thats the problem) feedback would be nice, thanks <3
Hello and welcome to TSF.
It does sound like you may have a dead hard drive. Try following these instructions to test it: HD Diagnostic
Good luck and let us know if you have any other questions.

try reinstalling again and use these instructions:
and when you get to the blue screen where it lets you delete the partition you need to delete them all first, then choose setup windows, and it will create a new clean partition for you.
I am new to this site. My computer seems to freeze often. Unfortunately, a freezing episode occurred during a windows update, so I turned off my computer even though it says "do not turn off your computer". Ever since I did this, when I try to turn on my computer, the BIOS loading bar goes to about 4/5 the way before it stops and goes into a black screen with a white cursor on the top left. I also cannot access safemode by repeatedly pressing F8. What is wrong with my computer?
Please do the following.
Instructions for a Windows 7 Repair installation.
A Windows 7 Repair Installation will require a installation disc.
If you do not have a Windows 7 installation disc you can download a free legal ISO image of Windows 7 SP1 at Windows 7 Forums. You will need to download the same version of Windows 7 that you have installed, This image is hosted by the Digital River store which is an official distribution partner of Microsoft. This is a genuine untouched image which is safe to download.
Attention: If you do have a Windows installation disc, skip Part A and go to Part B, Step 1b.
Part A, Steps 1a - 6a
How to burn ISO image using Windows Burn Disk Image.
Notice: This applies only to Windows 7 and Windows 8, earlier versions do not have this.
1. Place a blank CD or DVD in the tray of your optical drive and close the tray.
2. After you have downloaded the ISO image you want to burn right click on the Start orb, then choose Windows Explorer.
3. When Explorer opens click on Downloads in the left pane. Scroll down till you find the ISO file you want and double click on it. Click on Burn Disk Image.
4. In the image below you will see Disk burner:, this should be set to the optical drive you want to use. Click on Verify disc after burning if you want to Windows to verity the disc image after burn. Click on burn.
5. In the image below you can see that the green progress bar, when the image is finished burning the bar will be filled.
6. After the image has completed being burned click on Close.
Please note: In order to boot from this DVD you may need to change the boot order in the BIOS so that the CD/DVD-ROM is the first device in the boot order, and the hdd is the second device.
Part B, Steps 1b - 10b
1b) Place the installation disc in the tray of the CD/DVD drive, close the tray and restart the computer.
2b) You will be prompted to press any key to start the installation, I find the space bar handy.
At this point the setup process will load files, this will take several minutes.
3b) You will now need to choose the Language, Time, currency format, and Keyboard or input method that you'd like to use.
After this is done click on Next.
4b) Click on the Repair your computer link at the bottom-left of the Install Windows window.
This link will begin the Windows 7 System Recovery Options.
5b) System Recovery Options will now search your hard drive(s) for any Windows 7 installations. This will take several minutes.
No participation is required on your part at this time, wait till it has finished and the next window opens.
6b) Choose the Windows 7 installation that you'd like to perform the Startup Repair on, then click on Next
7b) Click on the Startup Repair link from list of recovery tools in System Recovery Options.
For a future reference, there are several other diagnostic and recovery tools available in the Windows 7 System Recovery Options including System Restore, System Image Recovery, Windows Memory Diagnostic, and Command Prompt.
8b) The Startup Repair tool will now search for problems in the system files.
If Startup Repair finds a problem with any system files the tool may suggest a solution which you will need to confirm, or may solve the problem automatically.
9b) Startup Repair will now attempt to repair whatever problems it found with system files.
Note: If Startup Repair did not find any problems with system files you won't see this step.
Important: Your computer may or may not restart several times during this repair p... Read more
My new protege has heating issue. upper left corner(power button area) is heating up pretty bad and doesn't cool down easy.
Is this common for everyone, or is there anyway that i can reduce the heat?
I tried to use cooling perfomance maintanace pre-installed application, however, it keeps want me to close all the applications in use, however, I do not any application on. Any solution?
> My new protege has heating issue. upper left corner(power button area) is heating up pretty bad and doesn't cool down easy. Is this common for everyone, or is there anyway that i can reduce the heat?
I guess this is your first ?small? notebook which supports such big CPU/GPU performance. You will notice this on all small (~13?) notebooks. Why? Because the cooling modules are placed on the left and the whole warm air flows from this direction.
I?ve got U400 series. It?s 13? unit and the left area is warm too because of the cooling modules.
Furthermore the unit supports an overheating protection which means that the notebook would shut down automatically if the temperature is too high.
Does the notebook shut down automatically? No?
Well, in such case the temperature is ok and not too high.
Of course you can change the Win 7 power management settings in order to decrease the CPU and GPU performance which would lead to lower heat dissipation. This keep the temperature at lower level.
The hinge in the upper left corner is frozen. When I lift the screen portion of the notebook, the hinge forces the keyboard section away from the base.http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/The-hinge-in-the-upper-left-corner-of-my-notebook/td-p/5787896
I have encountered the same problem as others in this forum. The base of my laptop has started to separate in the upper left hand corner next to the hinge. I can push it closed when the laptop is closed, but it separated again when I open the laptop. My laptop has never been dropped or damaged in any other way.http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Video-Display-and-Touch/Separation-of-upper-left-corner-of-HP-Envy-17-TS/td-p/5778275

Update: When I connected the mouse and keyboard directly into the computer they worked OK. So I guess there must be something wrong with the A/B switch?
I have a Pentinum 2, 350 MHz computer running Win98SE. I have attempted to down load new video drivers or other programs and when I do I do not get the window that allows me to complete the download. Instead I get a little multi colored checkerboard in the upper left corner. How do I get rid of this so that I can complete my driver or program downloads ? It is getting very frustrating as I do not know what is causing this little checkerboard to appear instead of the expected program.
Any help to correct this problem would be appreciated.
Have you by any chance installed a downloading program like download express or download expert. I seem to remember that some of these programs do that sort of thing.

In IE 8, when I would open a website, the website name would be in the upper left corner. With IE 9, however, that area is blank. What do I need to do to make it appear again?
reckon they did away with it - you might be able to tweak it back in, though..http://www.sevenforums.com/browsers-mail/151487-ie-9-problem-website-name-no-longer-upper-left-corner.html

Malware topic here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic374227.htmlNow that your topic is properly posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a Malware Removal Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the Malware Removal Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the Malware Removal Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the Malware Removal Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another MR Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/373465/blinking-cursor-top-left-on-black-screen-after-i-ran-chkdsk-r-on-recovery-console-malware-issue-too/

Hello there So after installing and tweaking windows some small annoyances remain One of them that i encounter every day is as follows I have monitors Primary on the right secondary dual over Cannot hand monitors on left upper corner mouse on the left If i take my cursor up to the top left of the primary monitor it gets quot stuck quot and will not move over to the left hand screen secondary monitor I Cannot mouse over upper left hand corner on dual monitors believe this is caused by the APP bar which I have disabled as per http www ghacks net disable-windows- -mouse-over-corner-interfaces However the problem still remains If i go aproximately pixels down from the upper left hand corner i can mouse over to the other screen fine No menu comes up my cursor just hits a wall I have made sure both montior tops are in line in the screen resolution screen I tried to shoot a video of it but of course camstudio does not work in windows sigh steps to reproduce are drag your mouse to the very top left corner with the intention of moving it to the second monitor How can i disable I have tried the GPO setting for EdgeUI which creates the registry key nbsp DisableTLcorner in the link above As a bit of background if one is constantly using VNC to manage other peoples computers I do not want to steal focus from their mouse by dragging my cursor over the centre of the screen Cannot mouse over upper left hand corner on dual monitors So i bring my mouse cursor to the very top title bar area and try and move between screens Obviously this is a windows quot feature quot Anyone else annoyed by this is there some fix thanks
Um no, I have never in my life found that installing a monitor driver ever fixed anything.
there is nothing in the application log that has anything to do with this problem as its a mouse event. No event is obviously generated when i am moving the mouse around the screen.
you cannot reproduce? I have installed a few more windows 8s and the problem exists on every single one.
here is a video of the event. Finaly got camstudio working properly, just have to do the whole screen. in the video, i try and move the mouse in the upper left and lower left of the screen. the two screens are different wallpapers to make it easier to see.
I have managed to find a service that allows uploads, the video file is here so you can see what im talking about. I hope that makes it clearer.
I hope someone knows how to change this because for some reason it drives me crazy. As we all know the word "Start" appears on the top left hand corner of the win8/8.1/RT metro home screen. Is there anyway to get rid of it? Thanks in advance for your help.

You mean this:
I have an excel screen with a couple of top rows frozen.
I scroll down the bottom section, row after row, using the regular excel scrollbar.
I do NOT select any cells.
I would like to display in one of the frozen top row cells the address (or contents) of the cell currently showing in the upper left hand corner of the non-frozen screen as I scroll along. Again, I am not stopping to highlight the cell (or any cell; just scrolling along).
So, for example, if I've scrolled down to row 102, I would like cell A1 to show "A102" (or its contents).

Hi all. So, I've got a desktop running Windows 7 32bit, and a corded USB Dell optical mouse. This morning I booted up the computer, and after a short while the mouse cursor started staggering up to the upper right hand corner of the screen and would not come back down.
I tried plugging in a different optical mouse, and the same thing happened. I tried all the usb ports on the computer, no change. I tried updating the drivers and just uninstalling and reinstalling the mouse, no change. I did a system restore to yesterday, when it was working just fine. That actually seemed to work for a few minutes, then it started up again.
So right now I'm running a full system virus scan, but I was just wondering if anyone here had any ideas as to the cause. I haven't downloaded any software or changed any settings in the last few days.
What is your graphics card ? Have you very recently upgraded the graphics driver ?
if so, try a downgrade , it might be solved.

Welcome to the Community, it could be an issue with the harddrive. I suggest you can start by running the Hardware diagnostics.
To run diagnostics press and hold down the "Fn" key (on the lower left hand bottom of the keyboard) and turn on the system,it should ideally bring up screen showing Pre-Boot System Assessment.
Another way to run the diagnostics go to F12 screen, scroll down using the "up" and "down" arrow key, choose diagnostics and press Enter.
If the diagnostics shows any error code/message please post it back.
Since your system is getting stuck on black screen with blinking cursor, you can also try to release flea power.
To release flea power disconnect the charger and remove the battery, press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds, reconnect the battery and charger.Turn on the system and see if it boots to Windows.
Hope this helps,
the cursor on my click mini, every now and then keeps moving left to finish on top left corner, this causes typing errors. what is the cause? and how can I put it right.
Try cleaning the whole touchpad, perhaps it may require recalibration. I previously had issues with the touchpad and removed the additional drivers that came with ithttps://forum.toshiba.eu/showthread.php?85531-Satellite-Click-Mini-L9W-B-cursor-keeps-moving-left-to-finish-on-top-left-corner
Hi Everyone I just joined and hopefully I Flashing Screen Flashing at Drive Hard LED Vista Hangs won't Start, Always Cursor, can be of some help for others but for starters I need to ask for help for myself Before posting this I did a search of the forums here but did not find anything identical to my issue I have a -month old Acer notebook that will no longer start Windows Vista Home Premium if that matters A few nights ago I noticed the Vista won't Start, Screen Hangs at Flashing Cursor, Hard Drive LED Always Flashing machine was at the quot Windows did not shut down properly quot screen black background white text Unfortunately I Vista won't Start, Screen Hangs at Flashing Cursor, Hard Drive LED Always Flashing was not around the machine when it got into this mode The screen showed a list of or less choices - I think the default highlighted choice was to let Windows search the hard disk for errors I chose this but it didn t seem to start after Vista won't Start, Screen Hangs at Flashing Cursor, Hard Drive LED Always Flashing watching it for several minutes So being the impatient sort I rebooted the PC and the same black screen with choices displayed This time I selected Start Windows Normally but when the system came back up it ends at the same screen again I believe the quot Windows did not shut down properly quot screen I was seeing was not the normal one I ve always seen but a different one with less choices if that makes sense So I said forget this I have a backup I tried restoring a backup of the hard drive I made with Acronis True Image I booted off the True Image CD I chose to only restore just the C partition Both times I tried it gets to over complete then there s a message about the image being corrupt So I shut down the PC When I power it up the Acer logo screen displays for a few seconds then the screen turns black and there s a flashing cursor in the upper left corner The hard drive LED next to the power switch keeps flashing Thinking maybe it was just a slow startup I have left it this way for hours and it stays hung up and the hard drive LED keeps on flashing I can go into the Acer Recovery mode press ALT-F during the Acer logo screen and restore the system default backup it restores files from a hidden partition so the system is back to the shipped from the factory state This restore finishes OK Then the PC restarts but the same problem happens when it comes up I ve tried this twice I also have Acer Recovery DVDs which I created when I purchased the PC I can boot the laptop off of these and restore them DVDs The restore works OK but again when the PC reboots it hangs again I ve tried this several times I ve also went into BIOS and changed the boot order around but this didn t help I also reset the BIOS to defaults - no help This problem started nights ago I have not installed any new hardware I don t think any new software was installed at that time several people use this laptop but I m not sure Anyways the system default restore should have alleviated any issues with that I would think The other thing I tried was booting off an Ubuntu live CD - it boots OK and can see the files on the laptop s C partition This at least told me that the PC hardware probably is OK It seems like something is preventing the hard drive from booting into Vista Does anyone have any ideas Thanks nbsp
bump for the day
Just installed Windows 7 on my other hard drive and after it installs, i get the boot screen with the glowing lights then the screen that says starting up services and after all of that i get a black screen with a thin line about a centimeter thick on first time boot up after install, i can start it in safe mode but it says that the installation process cannot be completed in safe mode, i didn't have any problems like this with the earlier build till i updated and restarted, any solutions, I've searched everywhere and haven't found anything
Hi, MarsVoltron, and welcome to the forums.
Have you tried wiping that install out and starting over?
