Changing admin password without usb/cd capabilities

Q: Changing admin password without usb/cd capabilities

Hi,

I have had the issue in the past of people changing my computers passwords and I simply boot from my usb or cd and reset the password. However somehow the password was changed on my LG Flatron N1941w and it has neither a usb port or a cd drive. The only thing I can think of at this point is converting the mouse/keyboard port to usb and booting from that...but there must be a simpler way? any input appreciated

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Did you attempt to boot into Safe Mode?

IF/once you get there,

change the pwd for the admin account(s)
use a better method of picking passwords - -
see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Password_strength
https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/32040?hl=en

Also understand that multiple accounts with Admin rights allows any of them to change all passwords - - obviously just not going to work.

In addition, allowing multiple persons to share the same account has the same problem.

I've had no password on my Win 7 machine for years. I recently created one as an administrator because I had some guests over. Now I want to go back to no password. Windows says, "Windows is not able to change your password". Huh?

A:Changing admin password

Try using the command line: Type CMD in the search box Right click run as Administrator and type:

net user username ""
Username being the account you want to blank the password on.

My neices were just given an old Dell Lattitude Cpx computer. We don't have the password for the admin user so we can't even install a program. The computer is running Windows 2000 professional.

I've tried using the boot CD here http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ but I cannot get the computer to boot up the program. I've gotten into the CMOS setup and it should try to boot from the CD first, but it seems to start loading windows before the CD drive even spins.

Of course there's always the option that I haven't burned the ISO file right. But I've burned it two different ways and it still seems to do nothing.

Any other methods?

Basically I have two admin accounts one of which belongs to another member of family and one which belongs to me. Heres the situation:

The person who owns the other Admin account is changing my accounts password (also an admin account). Surely there is some way to make it so that I can not have my account's password changed unless it is logged on to my actual account (so my account's password can only be changed if my account is logged on?)

Is there a way?

In urgent need of help!

Thanks!

A:Prevent Admin Accounts From Changing Other Admin Account Passwords In Xp!

Here's an article (for Win2K) that may help: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309799But, IMO, the issue here is that the other person can't be trusted. In such a situation I'd suggest making the other account into a Standard User account - that way they won't be able to mess with your stuff, and they'll be reliant upon you for anything that requires administrative privileges.

The firm in which I work has a Lenovo PC with Windows 10 installed. There are two user profiles on the computer, the admin and another normal account without administration rights. We have only the password of the account without administrator rights.

The network administrator had left the company surprisingly in without giving the administrator password of the PC and we cannot contact him anymore.

Now we want to install another programme and we cannot do this without an administrator account.

I disabled secure boot and have tried to boot the PC with an Linux USB Stick, but it do not boot from the stick.

Any suggestion how I either can reset the password of the administrator account or create an new account with administrator rights.

A:Windows 10 admin password reset or new account with admin rights

Although there may be techniques to recover a lost password it is forum policy that we do not discuss these here - your best bet would be to visit a local security specialist and get them to recover/reset it for you - and a change to the policy for the replacement admin may be a good idea, I always wrote a list of all passwords and stored it with the Managing Director and also in a fireproof safe

Hi, I work at a pawn shop, and we have a problem we have never encountered before.  This laptop, which is cleared and is now for sale in the shop, now asks for an administrator password or power on password.  It did not do this when it was brought in, nor when it was pulled from the back.  We were going to power it on for a customer, and it just started asking us for this password. I have seen in another post that you enter through it 3 times to get a code, so here is the code:61987774 Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hello,

I bought a laptop about a year ago. Shortly after buying it, we lost the password before making a backup disk. I couldn't change the password, we run Windows 7, without the old password. Luckily, or so we think, we have one of those laptops that has a fingerprint scanner so I have been able to log on using my fingerprint as a password. However, I can't believe that I am locked out of changing the passwords on this computer.

I have learned my lesson! Always back it up first! But for now, I need some help. I am also a little worried that I may have been hacked into. A friend said that if your password all of a sudden doesn't work, that is a sign of a hacker. That is what it felt like happened to me. I swear I thought I had the password right, then all of a sudden it stops working.

Thanks so much-Bill

You have just gained graphical access to your User Accounts in the Control Panel.12. Now simply pick the account you need to change and remove or change your password as you prefer. If you want to log on without having to enter your new password, you can type control userpasswords2 at the prompt and choose to log on without being asked for password. After you've made your changes close the windows, exit the command box and continue on with the Repair (have your Product key handy).13. Once the Repair is done, you will be able to log on with your new password (or without a password if you chose not to use one or if you chose not to be asked for a password). Your programs and personalized settings should remain intact.

I'm currently trying to help our Network Admin out and I'm running into a problem. Hopefully someone here can help get me back on track. We're in the process of changing the passwords to all of our password protected files (mostly word xp and excel xp files). Most of the files have the same password and we need to set them to something more complex but the problem is that we have almost a thousand files that need changing. Is there anyway to do a mass password change on all the protected files or am I going to have to do it all manually??

thanks in advance!

Is it possible to change local administrator account names on PCs across a network to a uniform name by running a login script? I'm pretty sure it is possible, but I really need to know where I could find such a script.

TIA,

roto

A:Script for changing local admin account name?

Are all these windows machines? Or are you running in a mixed environment? Is this a workgroup or domain environment? Are the machines running a remote control client (Altiris, ZenWorks, etc.) of some kind?

Do you actually need to rename the account? Or are you just looking for a standard local admin account?

If it is a Windows environment I'd recommend you write a script that creates a user on the local machine, assigns the user to the local administrators group, and creates a password for the new account. Next, have the script disable the local administrator account. Run the script against all the machines on the network and you're there.

This would be a great intro to WMI scripting and Microsoft's script-o-matic would get you started.

I realize when I log in as administrator I can only change the power options of that admin account. If a non-admin user tries to change power options access is denied. So how do I change the power options for a non-administrator account?

A:Changing power options for a non-admin account

Windows 7 ultimate or higher or Windows XP PRO? Xp Pro it might be achieved using the group policy editor.

If you don't have a pro version of Windows it has to be done through the registry which is very tricky. If you do not know how to use the Windows registry or feel confident to it can be risky.

Good Morning,

We have been unhappy with the service provided by our current support tech and we plan to change to another. I would like to know what I can do to make sure our current guy does not have access to our system any longer. I know he uses TEAM VIEWER and Microsoft Remote Desktop, but I'm sure he has other ways to get in to our system.

Windows SBS 11 (Win Server 2008 + Exchange Server 2010)
3 XP
2 Win 7
2 Win 8
Linksys SR 2016
Netopia

Any suggestions on how to block him, would really be greatly appreciated.

A:Changing Support Service - need to lock out old admin

For Remote Desktop, you just need to change ALL the Windows passwords. If you use Windows EFS for encryption, you have to ask each user to change her own password and not use the admin account to change it for her; or else she won't be able to access her encrypted files. EFS encrypted files show up in green color in Windows Explorer. Don't delete any accounts belonging to the tech, just use the admin account to change the password (hopefully he does not use EFS), because there might be work related data stored in that account.

For TeamViewer, I know nothing about it, you may want to just un-install it from all your computers.

Hi, i would like to change the Passwordchg option so to prevent my password to be changed (i know this option could be changed but is a little more complicated), anyway, when i put the command
Code:
net user "Administrator" /Passwordchg:no

on my command prompt it throws (may be a not accurate translation)
Code:
Operation not permitted, could disable, delete or deny access to the administrator account

Now i dont see why since i could also disable this option (if it would be possible to enable it) and also i know and will NEVER forget my password.
Anyway is there a way to achieve this in another way?

A:Changing Passwordchg option on Built-In Admin

Hi Alesimula, welcome to the Eight Forums.

Windows protects the built-in administrator account in all possible ways it can think of. One of these protective measures Windows has taken is that you cannot disable password changing for the built-in administrator account. This is very clearly told when you try it, either from Command Prompt or using Computer Management console:
Short answer: The message you get is not an error message per se but instead a notification, Windows telling you that the change you'd like to do cannot be done.

A:Changing admin user...and getting it to stay changed.

The best thing to do is to create a new admin account and then copy the profile from the old one to your new one. Then you can delete his account completely. Changing its name will prove to be an endless job with side-effects.

How To Copy A User Profile

Once copied over, the new account should look and act just like the old one with the new name. Registered and installed programs, either for the machine or just the specific user, should all work as before.

Always have a full system backup, as recent as possible. It's also a good idea to make a full backup when you first get the machine, and possibly save it on DVD, so that you can restore everything when the hard drive fails.

Free drive backup software (imaging, cloning, and archiving - backups can be created on a second hard drive, internal or external, or on DVD's, or BluRay disks. One BluRay disk will hold most peoples' entire system drive's backup at 25 GB's using compressed images, 50 GB's double-layer):

Paragon Backup & Recovery 2012 (Recovery boot CD or USB key)
Macrium Reflect (Free)
O&O Disk Image Express or (mirror)
Easeus Todo Backup
Acronis True Image For WD (reduced, free version for WD drives - cloning and imaging)
Acronis True Image For Seagate (DiscWizard) (reduced, free version for Seagate drives - cloning and imaging)
ODIN (open-source)
Redo Backup & Recovery (Boot CD)
Clonezilla Live (A bootable CD of Debian with Clonezilla.)
Drive Image XML
PING (Partimage is not Ghost) (Boot CD with option Clam Antivirus)
Partition Saving
Clonezilla
Passmark OSFClone (Bootable, cloning only)
ImageX and GImageX (Geekware. Small images due to "single instancing" and allows partial, selected restore of image parts. Used by Microsoft to apply disk image to drive during "installation" of Windows 7.)

There are also many commercial products with more features.

A restore point is a good thing to make before any major change. But remember that it only restores the "system", i.e., the registry and Windows files. It won't undo most other changes.

I have attached a script in a zip archive that creates an instant restore point when clicked. A box will ask for a name and then create the point. It's a handy thing to keep on the desktop, and serves as a reminder, too.

Hello,

I installed Windows 8.1 two days ago and have set up two accounts, one Administrator tied to Microsoft and one local Standard account. For some reason, the Standard account keeps on changing its account type by itself to have full administrative rights. Any idea on how to fix this?

Also, do you think I even need two accounts? I am the sole user of this PC. Do you think I could just use the Admin account? Thank you!

A:Standard account changing back to Admin on its own

Hey mate,

For your last question, I usually use a standard [Microsoft] account, where I do all my work. The admin account lies dormant, until I need to install anything on it. I just install from my standard account, using the Admin account info when needed.
[Edit] The reason I do this is to add another layer of protection, to prevent malware access to the Admin account [/Edit]

For the first problem, you might try creating the two accounts over again, and delete the old ones. Make sure you have all important and recommended updates installed from control panel, and an antivirus (Either the built-in Defender or another you trust).

Let me know if this doesn't work for you, and I'll offer more advice. Take care.

I've just been having a very large amount of permission problems in various programs, right now I'm having trouble compiling and running the temporary .exe's CodeBlocks makes, getting "permission denied" as an actual compiler error.

So what I'd like to do, and I'm not sure if its possible, is activate the built in full power administrator, which I know how to do, and then rename it to my current account name, or make it so where they merge. I don't really want to have to set all my folders up and such (especially with programs like itunes, which will go off the file path of the username)

Have a look at making them a power user, rather then an administrator. Then apply your group policy and it should do the trick.

the message reads as so :" this program is blocked by group policy. for more information, contact your system administrator."
so now i totally cannot access any programs which require an admin pass.i cant uninstall, install, delete and do anything ease which requires admin pass.
please help me

A:changing the consent prompt behavior admin or lau in regedit

Hi,

This is my speciality! First, let's try the simple things, Safe Mode.

See if you can access regedit from Safe Mode.

If not, download and run the portable Re-enable it 2.0.0.1 Use it to either re-enable or run regedit then change the settings back. http://http://www.softpedia.com/get/...Portable.shtml

If this does not work, I have plenty more suggestions.

Did you create a registry back up before tampering with it? Why on earth are you editing the registry just to change a wallpaper? A very dangerous thing to do!

A:Changing drivers letters without access to Admin tools

I doubt it'll work, but you can change drive letters via Partition Wizard

BTW, Make sure your user account has full adminstrative priviledges (Although you may not be able to change that )

Hello all I hope this is the proper thread I wasn t sure if I should go here or security I have about computers that have recently had our billing software installed by a contract IT fellow Little did this gentleman know that there are two folders that quot users quot must be given modify rights on to be able to run the automatic update tool upon have folder permissions do not rights admin systems on login Changing that If they are not given these rights they error out upon update and then cannot use the system at all Needless to say them using the billing software is important Obviously I don t want to go through pcs and do this by hand So here Changing folder permissions upon login on systems that do not have admin rights is the situation Changing folder permissions upon login on systems that do not have admin rights - remote PCs all on a domain - All PCs have users that do not have modify rights to two specific folders c jwalkc c hmsjava - I want to find a way to unobtrusively update Changing folder permissions upon login on systems that do not have admin rights these folder permissions My first thought was to use CACLS So I created a quick line batch cacls c jwalkc t e g users c cacls c hmsjava t e g users c This worked nicely on my system which I have admin rights Not so well obviously when I tried it on an account I created in AD that had standard user rights I thought I d simply add it to their login script until I remembered that runs as the user and not as an admin Then I decided to just make a batch file and use runas but there is not a good way to have it automatically insert a password and I need to be able to do this without an additional application downloads My next thought was add it as a GPO startup script I do not have domain admin rights so sadly I could not test it as I wanted However I had one of our sys admins create a dummy OU with my dummy AD user account and add the script there The script will execute but when it gets to my command it gives quot access denied quot on both I thought running a startup script via GPO ran it as admin but I do not yet have much experience in that area so I might be wrong I am curious if GPO DOES use admin rights that perhaps I need to have it add quot domain users quot rather than quot users quot thinking perhaps it was conflicted trying to use local admin vs domain admin I ve tried various things so many that I can t really recall all the variations to place here and even dabbled in some vbs which I am not very familiar with but so far no luck I m pretty much where I started after a fair bit of effort I ve searched google a number of times and found lots of partial solutions but none that I was able to apply I could probably get it done with pstools easy enough but I wanted to try and make it more automated if at all possible Does anyone have any ideas that they might share Thanks so much nbsp

This may have been asked but the server won't let me search.

When the tech guy setup up my computer he probably asked me for an admin's password. I can't remember what I told him and nothing I try works.

I'm the only user and my user account doesn't seem to have a password when I log on. But to use the admin, which someday I surely will I don't have a pw and the program says a blank won't do.

If you know of a method or program that will retrieve it I will really appreciate learning about it.

Thanks,

Bob

I have my own computer at my work and we were having some network problems and had a guy come out and work on them. Before he came and worked on them I was an administrator on my computer and now I am a power user! Also, before he came I could log on as administrator with no password and now it tells me that I need a password.

He swears he didn't put me on as a power user or set up an admin password, but I don't know who else would have. Now I can't use update CD's for my software such as MSN or anything. Is there anyway I can put me back on as the admin of my computer instead of a power user????

Please help if you can. Thanks

I shall soon be taking delivery of a new Laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit

With previous Versions of Windows I have never Set an Admin Password so that the Computer Boots straight to the Desktop, which is how I like it

I have been reading about the new System Image\Files Backup and Restore feature

It seems that an AdminPassword is required either for Backup or Restore (not sure which or both) and that Windows will not accept a 'blank' Password

If this is correct then I'd better create an Admin Password?

Can someone enlighten me please

A:Admin Password?

Welcome
Dont take a chance by guessing. Set a password, then try the procedures in question. If a password is not needed then you can remove it.

A:Admin password

Hi,

Before learning the solution please keep this in mind that the solution/solutions given should strictly be used for your system only and must not be used for hacking, or breaking into protected systems of other users which if done may result in imprisonment under local laws.

Start your computer.
When the welcome screen appears or login screen appears quickly press ctrl+alt+del twice.
A classic login screen like the one given in the image will appear.
Type "Administrator"(without the quotes) in the username box and keep the password box empty.
Press enter and you can log into windows.
Now go to Control Panel, then to user accounts and change the administrator password.

I have a gateway laptop running WinNT 4.0. The machine was not completeing the boot sequence so I attempted a repair using the NT Disk and my emergency repair disk. Now the machine will not recognize my password or the Administrators password. Is there anyway to undo the repair or to get past the password. I have a great deal of data on the laptop and would hate to have to reformat the entire machine.

Thanks

Lets say you're the admin of the computer, then you'd like to set you're password, does the password get lost if your computer gets reformat? meaning, when this happens,no matter if you type the password at the log-in page, the password woudnt work the next time you log-in? or does the settings you made go back to default allowing you to access your computer

A:Admin Password

Everythime I or a friend has to reformat and start again, the old paswords don't work, and we are forced to use new ones. I would imagine that the bios passwords remain as the bios doesn't get wiped.

So, this is probably something you get every day. but I think it's different.
My friend's mom put a password on his computer which stops him from running programs of the downloaded variety.
Where the problem arises is fairly obvious. He can't run ANYTHING which has been downloaded, making his computer essentially a potato. Is there a way past this? Is there a way to remove this password, restoring his computer back to a usable state?

having issues with playing a number of games under win 7 so I thought I could use the boot earlier version option when the computer first starts. I select this choice hoping to get an XP sp3 install I had earlier start up. After a few moments you get a prompt for an admin password. I tried blank (or nul or whatever you want to call it). NADA. Then I tried a password that I figured was the choice. NADA. Tried the word "admin". Still NADA. I do not recall ever setting anything so what could it be or how do I fix this? I can try ophcrack if that is a solution. Along this topic however it only shows 1 choice for the OS and that is one located at c:\windows. To me this sounds like Win 7 so maybe I really only have the one OS?
