[SOLVED] windows 7 pc crashed..have important files in it

Q: [SOLVED] windows 7 pc crashed..have important files in it

One of our laptops with windows 7 profession crashed. It shows some blue screen before going to login screen.

I tried windows startup repair, system restore but nothing works. It shows message "windows repair unsuccessful" or "cannot complete system restore".

There are few important files in it so I'm trying to recover it.

I wonder if I install fresh windows 7 with option "upgrade" will keep the old files in c drive. Then i can recover them.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can you please get the STOP code error for the BSOD?

I have first been getting these problems when I downloaded Comodo IS Pro. Apparently when I approached them for help, the technician did not reply to me after telling me to install.

Thus I did a system restore and the computer could load in normal mode(however the screen, etc loaded slow like hell.)

Yesterday, I downloaded comodo firewall and something familiar appeared

From Problem Reports and solution, these are the service that crashed:

4X svchost.exe
1X lsm.exe
1X sandboxie.exe
1X wininit.exe

But guard32.dll from comodo is the module causing it according to Problem Reports and Solution, but anyone knows why and how to solve it?

A:Svchost crashed, windows start up crashed, local session manager crashed

Have you tried uninstalling Commodo to see if it is causing the problem?

I'm not sure if this is the right section to post this question in but whatever.
What are the most important .dll files Windows use?
I'm making a Uplink like hacking game and one of the feature i'm working on would allow you to "destroy" a machine by deleting key Windows .dll files.
The problem is, I'm not quite sure what those files are.

So far all i have is Kernel32.dll.
What else could i add?
Thanks.

A:PLEASE HELP! Windows XP not starting up. VERY important files not backed up!!

You could remove the Hard drive, install it as a second HD in another computer or slave it via USB adapter and make a dvd or put files on a thumbdrive.

Or download and burn a linux cd? By making a Live CD, (boots up using the linux cd and computer ram) you should be able to access the files (without removing anything) you need to back them up to a thumbdrive.

Do you have a XP cd? supposedly performing a repair install shouldnt mess with your files and folders. I still would back up the computer, if at all possible first though.

A:windows wants to format usb flash drive with important files!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some suggestions;
1 Run data recovery software on the drive. There are a number of free ones or you can download a trail version of paid recovery apps.
2 The forum has a spell checker; please use it. Your post is difficult to read with all of the mis-spellings.

This is why we stress backups so much. Remember data you do not have at least two copies of is data you do not care about.

Try in install XP SP2 and after no sucess Vista but no joy. Had some problems in IE7 and Firefox I couldn?t fix. .So I formatted the hard drive and am trying to reinstalling Vista on the empty hard drive. I get through the first sections Ok during install. No problems loading first start up files, then it gets to the actual install and I get a green tick when copying Windows Files. Then between 7% and 11% of Expanding Windows Files the computer shut down. Tried to use another copy of the program. Same thing happens with XP. Bad sector on the hard drive. The hard drive was working fine last week I thinks its crashing while installing the driver.cab file. Any ideas?? Very stuck. Thanks

Hi, I just restored my laptop to factory settings, windows update has now decided it wants to install 115 updates, 107 of which are 'important'. Is it necessary to install all of them? Can I get away with just getting the most recent ones? It wouldn't bother me but they will take an age to install and take up the best part of 1GB of disk space...

Thanks.

A:Are these files important?

1. If one doesn't know what they are don't remove them.
2. They are hidden for a reason.
3. They are app data and if removed many things might not won't work.
I don't know what they belong to but if it was my computer I wouldn't remove them.

Hello all I am as my tag implies a dj in fact I am a very scared dj right now I have over gigs of mp s on my hard drive of them were scanned in over yrs ago by myself My problem is this I began to update my mp collection last week and noticed much to my horror that while the mp file name remained intact the actual file itself was completely changed not only was it the mp3 changing files important themselves wrong song it started at odd points of the wrong song I am somewhat unsure as to whether this is a hardware HD issue or whether it has more to do with software I have run Norton and it came up with no known virus so basically I am stumped All I know is that it took me the better part of a year to install these songs and now it seems as if I am losing them one by one My first thought was that perhaps the files were degrading due to age but that is not the case as the same thing happened to a brand new file I added last week Help me please nbsp

A:important mp3 files changing themselves

It still sounds like a virus. Do you have any mixing or other software that may have modified the files in some way? Get a free online scanning program like AVG at www.grisoft.com and try it again...

Could be another component like bad memory. If you want to keep them from "degrading" any further make all of your MP3 collection read-only. GO into windows explorer and select all files with the MP3 extension, right click and select properties and change the file attribute to read-only.

i Accidently deleted my entire download folder rather than just the 1 file and am wondering if theres a way to undo / restore this. ive lost alot of important files.

A:HELP Deleted important files.

Not very sure that the following will help, but no harm in trying.

Download the portable (self-extracting) Glary Utilities 6169KB, Glary Utilities Builds - Clean Registry, Fix PC Errors, Protect Privacy | Glarysoft on a different PC and extract it to a pendrive. Plug in the pendrive on the PC on which you want to recover the Download folder and run Integrator_Portable.exe. Under File Management, click on Restore deleted files, scan your drive, check whether you can find the files in good condition to copy it. Copy it to some other location/ folder on a different external drive/pendrive and then move/copy it to the original location.

Alright, what are the important files? (Picture a small, stupid child, although I am 59 with a Master's Degree in Librarianship. Also redheaded, busty, wealthy, and wild. No, I lied. Small, stupid, child.)

I can understand backing up all my 'My documents'.
What about all the adjustments, choices, changes that I've made over the years that various computer software has prompted me to do? Such as my choices for my nVIDIA graphics card? My choices for AVG Internet Security? And so on?

What are the important files?

Thank you.

A:Backing up important files: Which ones?

The very best idea is to back up everything. You will need some place to do that, so a second hard drive or an external hard drive.

Then, you make an "image" of the entire hard drive. When it fails, you can then restore Windows, all your programs, settings, and everything else. You can also recover copies of files from the image without restoring the whole thing to a drive.

Free drive backup software (imaging, cloning, and archiving):

Paragon Backup & Recovery
Macrium Reflect (Free)
O&O Disk Image Express
Easeus Todo Backup
Redo Backup & Recovery (Boot CD)
Comodo Time Machine (Complete system, files, programs, and settings restoration, but not "bare-metal" for failed drive)
Clonezilla Live (A bootable CD of Debian with Clonezilla.)
Drive Image XML
PING (Partimage is not Ghost) (Boot CD with option Clam Antivirus)
Partition Saving
Clonezilla

There are also many commercial products with more features.

Otherwise, it is very hard to say. If you don't back up everything, you will always miss something that you wish you had kept. But saving everything in Docs will at least save all your personal files.

A:Lost important files

hello & welcome to TSF ,

the more you use your pc the less chance of recovery

follow this link

http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads38.html

there are many programs here that you can use / some are

freeware

shareware

full paid versions

you will have to decide what type you use

also remeber that you only get what you pay for

but i have found that many freeware programs can do the job

Hello all I am as my tag implies a dj in fact I am a important corrupting files mp3 very scared dj right now I have important mp3 files corrupting over gigs of mp s important mp3 files corrupting on my hard drive of them were scanned in over yrs ago by myself My problem is this I began to update my mp collection last week and noticed much to my horror that while the mp file name remained intact the actual file itself was completely changed not only was it the wrong song it started at odd points of the wrong song I am somewhat unsure as to whether this is a hardware HD issue or whether it has more to do with software I have run Norton and it came up with no known virus so basically I am stumped All I know is that it took me the better part of a year to install these songs and now it seems as if I am losing them one by one My first thought was that perhaps the files were degrading due to age but that is not the case as the same thing happened to a brand new file I added last week Help me please nbsp

I use Windows XP Pro on my office computer. Its not permitted to have internet connection so i cannot do any online fixes.
I noticed a warning mentioning a kavo.exe(virus) application so i ran my antivirus/antispyware and they detected 100+ infected files. I deleted them all. Now my windows is not operating properly.
So far this is what i've noticed to be malfuntioning
1. I cannot open my harddisk by doubleclicking them. if i do, a prompt would open asking me what program to use to access it.
it has affected both partitions.
2. The 'Show hidden files' option in Folder Options isnt working.

I've tried using System Restore but it didnt work
worse thing is, my PC detected the kavo.exe again.

Will i be able to save my drive without reformatting?
If so, please advise how.
Also, i need to know if i can Repair my Windows OS
Thanks in advance!

A:Might Have Deleted Important Os Files

kavo.exe can be a difficult infection to remove as it modifies the registry and drops other files on your system which need to be identified and removed as well. Some types of malware can result in a system so badly damaged that a Repair Install will NOT help!. Reinstalling Windows without first wiping the entire hard drive with a repartition and/or format will not remove the infection. The reinstall will only overwrite the Windows files. Any malware on the system will still be there afterwards. Starting over by wiping your drive, reformatting, and performing a clean install of the OS removes everything and is the safest action. Please read:"When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?""Help: I Got Hacked. Now What Do I Do?""Where to draw the line? When to recommend a format and reinstall?"Should you decide not to follow that advice, we will do our best to help clean the computer of any infections. If you wish to proceed, please do the following. Please read the pinned topic titled "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log" and complete all the steps. There are instructions for downloading and running Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) which will create a hijackthis log for you, or automatically download and install the most current version of HijackThis if it's not already installed on your computer. When you have done that, post your log in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here, for assistance by the HJT Team Experts. A member of the Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer. If you post your log back in this thread, the response from the HJT Team will be delayed because your post will have to be moved. This means it will fall in line behind any others posted that same day. Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. An expert will analyze your log and reply with instructions advising you what to fix. After doing this, we would appreciate if you post a link to your log back here so we know that your getting help from the HJT Team. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your post or make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

Before I got this error I was getting rundll.exe was missing. I copied that file from my laptop (runs XP). Obviously I messed up but don't know what to do next without making things worse.

Windows did an update on my computer. When re-started, it would not work.

I re-booted and got a couple of errors. So started in safe mode. Things went down hill from there. I did try to restore to a previous state. But no restore point could be found. uhg...

So let it rest over night, started it again this morning and all I got was a welcome, then black screen. Rebooted in safe mode and uninstalled the updates that were downloaded. Shut down, and started again.
After restarting, I got the blue welcome screen and now it is sitting with "preparing to configure Windows, Do not turn off your computer."
It has been 1/2 hour so far. How long should I wait before I shoot it?

Thanks,
Jennifer

I run ComboFix to get rid of the spyware, I got rid of it but in the process ComboFix deleted some of my files and placed them in Qoobox.
How can I get those files back? Its really important as I invested lots of time on working with these files, they are .xml type ones.
Also for finding them I used Pandora Recovery, I was able to recover these files with it but they were all 0KB.
Thank you for your time.

I accidentally deleted the partition on my computer when trying to upgrade to Windows XP Professional from Windows XP Home Edition. Just as the hard drive was about to be formatted I cancelled the operation before any progression. I wish to somehow get back my partition with all my files on there because a lot of those files are important to me. Is there any possible way to retrieve those files and the partition. What can I do? I really need help on this.

New user here in the forum,

I frequently backup files for other users and start w/ a new clean OS. I tried looking for some articles online, but none were really informative for me - wasn't what I was looking for. I was wondering if I could get some help here. Doesn't really matter the OS, mostly XP, Vista, or even Win7, but I guess the file structure btw. Vista and Win7 arn't really much diff.

Here is where I look to backup files:

C:\ --- sometimes I see users save some personal files at the root.

C:\Users\myprofile
Desktop
My documents
Music
Videos
Favorites
My Pictures
etc.

There are some software like (that save their files in Program Files or AppData):
Firefox
Outlook
Mozilla Thunderbird
iTunes
FlipShare
etc

Let me know if you can think of other places. Hopefully this post could help others in backing up essential directory locations.

Thanks in advance!

A:Where do I look to backup important personal files?

Not sure I understand the question but basically what you want to back up I think would be the entire "User account" so it would be something like C:\users\name of user account and you back up the bolded part and everything below that and that should give you all the user settings and data for those programs as well as all the user's data files like music, videos, pictures, documents, etc.

Appdata is a hidden folder just one level below the user account so that will get backed up by backing up the user account.

But the proper method to back up, imo of course, is to use an app like Acronis TIH or equivalent and just back the whole system up to an external drive or media, so that if something real bad happens to the main drive, it can be swiftly and easily restored, if necessary to a replacement drive. I additionally go a step further and also make sector by sector clones of my entire main drive to a back up drive. With clones, there is no need to restore, so one possible link in the recovery chain that can break is eliminated. But compressed image backups have certain advantages too, so that's why I do both.

A:SFC unable to fix corrupt files-- are these important?

The last two listed appear to be Brother printer drivers...the WMI Core is a basic part of Windows.

If the files are damaged...the typical thing to do is to remove them and replace them undamaged copies.

I would try uninstalling the printer drives...then reinstalling same.  They may be creating the problem with WMI.

If files are damaged...what's the point of allowing them to remain in the system, causing problems?

hi,

I have a standard Windows 10 build and I'm using robocopy to backup my data to an external drive. The goal is just to capture all my data so if the PC fails/gets stolen etc. I can restore my data on to another PC.

I'm doing a backup of c:\users\ as this seems to capture all my data. Are there any other folders you think I should backup?

I've excluded the 'AppData' folder as this seems to have a lot of stuff which is not data. Is that OK or do you think that should be backed up? Are there any other folders you think I should skip?

Thank you very much for your comments.

Hi

I'm trying to help my neighbour who deleted her XP login profile. I can recreate the profile but there were some Word docs on the desktop of the deleted profile she'd like back if possible. They aren't in the any recycle bin and (you guessed it.....no she didn't take a backup of them).

Is there any way to recover these files?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Hi,
I was reading yesterday that if I want to restore a file, I need to go to the file and right click and select restore. If the file does not exist anymore then one would go to the directory where the file originally was and select restore (or something to that effect).

I have two disks and I want to save some important files from one disk to the other. I have always used W7 Backup but now I am not sure I am doing the right thing. What would happen if my main disk crashed and there was absolutely no hope of salvaging it? Could I still restore from the back up made by W7 Backup? I won't know the file names or directory structure if one disk goes down completely.

Thanks.
David.

A:Will W7 Backup of my important files help me if my Disk Crashes?

Hi David,

There are a couple ways you can do it. The first, is when you use Windows Backup and Recovery make sure the create a system image is checked. That system image can be used to recover your OS and any files on the drive to a new HDD should the old HDD crash. Also, if you look at the upper left hand corner of the Backup and Recovery screen you will see the option to create a system image. You can use that also, which is what I do, to create a system image of my C drive. You also have the option to include any other partitions that you want to backup. After the image has been created, preferably on a second HDD, it will ask if you want to create a Recovery Disk. I would highly advise that you do, as this disk can be used to boot up from and then restore image if your HDD is unbootable. There are other third party imaging programs like Macrium Reflect, or Eaeus Todo Backup, or Acronis True Image that can be used for the same purpose as Windows System Imaging.

1. I get the message "Windows can't update important files and services while the system is using them. Save any open files and restart the computer. and then try to check the new updates." and I am asked to reboot
2. Update history says Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.139.1946.0) Successful Important Date installed 14/11/2012 (today)
3. After restart: update history still indicates the above installation was successful yet there is also an indication that "most recent check for updates - never, updates were installed - never". Red x message tells me to check for updates again but then loop back to no.1 message.
4. Tried unchecking all services that were not Microsoft and restarted but problem remains.
Any way out of this loop? Thanks.

I was using google chrome and none of the pages were loading correctly including settings This made me think I needed to do an immediate virus scan On doing so it detected quot ransonware quot which I am uneducated about no longer the case I have used other browsers since this incident under are ransomware. came Important files by attack encrypted. They to educate myself I found a few moments later that many of my documents movies ect were encrypted I figured I would do Important files came under attack by ransomware. They are encrypted. a restore to a previous addition but my virus removal program erased Important files came under attack by ransomware. They are encrypted. any such thing for the whole computer including for the documents as far as I can tell I used shadow explorer and it does not show ANY file back ups for anything These documents are VERY important I can not stress this enough And as I can not seem to find a viable solution online I am left on my own ideas to recover these files I am desperately asking the community here for two things Is there a program I can use that can potentially break the code for these encrypted files I do not care if I have to wait a month or more before said program is successful Any other solutions that I may have over looked

Hey everyone I'm posting this on behalf of a important to files! recover won't Vista need boot- co-worker whose computer recently got damaged Situation He had told me that a friend spilled a little wine on the counter which then seeped underneath it After a day Vista won't boot- need to recover important files! of air drying and after cleaning it- it turned on but it wouldn't load into Vista It tried to do a startup repair He brought it into work Vista won't boot- need to recover important files! when our IT guy was there He did some stuff to it not sure exactly what and told my co-worker when it's done to type exit and then re-boot He then told him if it doesn't load into Vista he'll need to take out the drive get a usb adapter and plug it in to another computer to retrieve the personal files pictures documents audio etc We never got it to load into Vista So he bought an adapter We plugged it into his XP machine at work and were not able to find any of his personal files We ran a search for just pictures on the drive and it only pulled system images and pictures that come on the computer or with software no pictures from a camera or anything I plugged it into my Mac oddly a few additional folders were visible that weren't when plugged into XP- one was a folder called RecycleBin and another was the Documents and Settings folder which was empty though No luck on a Mac finding any of the missing files I told him to try to plug it into a Vista machine and MAYBE other files or folders would be visible but that I honestly wasn't very optimistic on that being the solution ---- So- that is the situation The contents of that hard drive doesn't have a dollar value it is priceless to him and his family due to them having the majority of their children's photos on that drive The odd thing to me is that the Documents and Settings folder is completely empty but everything else on the hard drive seems to be in tact My co-worker mentioned his wife goes on Facebook a lot and other sites relatd which may have malicious threats Could it be a coincidence that the laptop picked up a virus but didn't do real damage until the machine was turned off coincidently after wine was spilled I feel awful At work I'm the one to go to with computer problems and of the time I am able to help This time I'm clueless and I know how important resolving this issue is I have a son of my own and if I lost his pictures I would be devastated Could someone offer me some suggestions on what else to try and what could have possibly caused this It seems like the wine is suspect- but how does it explain the Documents and Settings folder being the only folder that its contents are completely missing sorry for such a long post I wanted to include as much information as possible including the urgency obviously TIA -Matt

A:Vista won't boot- need to recover important files!

Hi MattD313,

You said you hooked it up to another PC and you cannot find the files you need? Hmmm... may be the files were already deleted. For one, someone had already tried to 'fix' it before you did. The bad thing about that is that you also do not know what that other person did in his attempt to repair it. If you can see other folders or files except the one your friend needs then I am inclined to believe they were deleted.

Make sure these files are just not hidden,

Which by the way is usually the first sign of Malware.
You can use these free tools to see if they find anything,
Manually Update them before running full scans,
Try not to use your computer while the scans are running, (one at a time of course).
Uncheck the box to Activate the Free trial from the final install options,

Just wondering how do you guys mark/identify more important folders and files? There might be many folders and files in a folder.

What I do is I put a dash at the beginning of file/folder name of the more important/frequently accessed files. Any other ideas? Thanks

A:What do you do to mark/identify more important folders and files?

Hello pcwin,

I suppose that you could change the folder preview image to something that makes the folder standout among the others. Of course you would need to use a medium, large, or extra large icon view to see it.

Hi I have a Dell laptop Inspiron E that unfortunately was infected with a virus My cpu got infected because my virus protection McAfee expired Prior to that McAfee always blocked such threats to my cpu I had my deleted Important infection due system files by virus to I cpu for yrs roughly Anyways I scanned the latest McAfee virus scan I Important system files I deleted due to infection by virus had which picked up alot of the infected files and quarantined them however there were about files that could not be quarantined These files were windows system files and perhaps something else Well being that McAfee located where the files were I went and located the file and simply deleted them by sending them each to the McAfee Shredder which was a huge mistake in my fault because now my cpu turns on and I can log in but when I do that all I get is my screensaver background with no icons or anything else Obviously I deleted some important system files and now I dont know where or how I can even recover such files Moreover I don t remember the files names sad gif and I don t even know if the virus is gone and my cpu is acting like that because of the files I deleted or because the virus got worse I think it was the deleted files can anybody please help

A:Important system files I deleted due to infection by virus

Hi .

Sounds to me like a clean install would eliminate two problems: the malware and the missing system files.

Anything short of a clean install seems like it is likely to very hit-and-miss for an extended period of time.

If you have a Dell...don't you have restore/recovery capability of some sort?

Hey Guys Any and all help would be greatly appreciated The end result is I need to recover the Documents and Settings folder on my HDD Here is the scenario About two weeks ago I came home to a dead computer The fans were on in the Corruption Recover Drive Hard - Need to Files! Important case but the monitor was off Every time Hard Drive Corruption - Need to Recover Important Files! I rebooted the same happened I finally had to send my motherboard and CPU in Intel sent me a warranty replacement Dual Core Ghz processor and ASUS sent Hard Drive Corruption - Need to Recover Important Files! me a new motherboard However it was not the original It was the same type of board but the premium model P N -SLI Premium original was Deluxe as they didn t have mine in stock While I waited for the new components to arrive I was able to hook up my old hard drive to my brother s computer The hard drive is a SATA Western Digital GB I was able to grab a few files off but didn t need any others at the time Plus the hard drive seemed to working fine so I had no reason to think it would be a problem to get files off in the future When I finally got the components back I hooked everything up The computer posted with no problem so I went through and configured the BIOS to my liking Upon reboot I received an error along the lines of No Operating System found I rebooted but the same occurred I then put in my Windows XP Pro CD thinking that maybe the new motherboard was giving Windows a problem When I went through to choose the R Repair option NOT Recovery Console it should ask me which Windows installation I would like to have repaired However it showed no Windows installation on the disk This began to worry me Not having access to my brother s computer any longer I ordered a SATA to USB cable and hooked the hard drive up to my work laptop The hard drive appeared with the Documents and Settings folder and a few other useless ones There was no Program Files or Windows folder In the Documents and Settings was my Username folder called Fitz I was able to open up the Fitz folder and navigate around to the My Documents folder and others with no problem I tried to copy the entire Documents and Settings to my laptop but certain files of which I don t remember would not copy over and it therefore kept disrupting the copy process Figuring the hard drive needed to be repaired I rebooted with the hard drive connected through the USB cable Upon reboot on my laptop Windows found the attached hard drive and ran the chkdsk utility I left this on overnight as it seemed to run forever finding and repairing errors In the morning I booted up to the chkdsk utility and it ran it again Afterit completed this time quicker I booted to Windows and then checked the hard drive Now here comes the bad news All of sudden the Program Files Windows and many other important folders had come back but now the Fitz folder in the Documents and Settings folder had changed It kept the same name but showed it not as a folder anymore but just a file with no file extension It also showed KB of size for the file At this point I hooked up the hard drive to my original desktop computer I then booted to the Windows XP CD and this time the Windows installation appeared I then ran the repair through the CD At times it said it had trouble copying a handful of dll files but I was able to hit enter which made it retry and it appeared to then work and continue I ran through this process twice The computer then reboots and runs through the rest of the repair install process However it continually locks up and can t completely finish As a last ditch effort I then re-hooked up the hard drive to my laptop to see if the Fitz folder had been restored It had not If anyone knows of any info or a utility I can use to repair this folder it would be a great help I had many important documents and things in that folder Thanks in advance and please excuse any typos or grammatical errors as I am pretty beat nbsp

I need external computers for myself and am running all of my personal stuff on my Seagate GB external USB harddrive on the family Important files disappeared somehow on external harddrive, and I need them back! computer Windows XP GB harddrive MB RAM etc I'm a photographer and recently returned from a two week trip with a lot of photos which I put onto my external drive since that's where all my stuff is I've been editing and uploading from there When I'm done with the drive I always use the safely remove hardware tool Half the time it doesn't seem to want to work and says quot device can't be stopped try later quot I unplug it anyway and there is never a problem A few nights ago I was waiting for it to give me an answer to either be safe or give the error message I waited longer than usual and nothing was coming up so I unplugged it and a second later it finally said it was safe to remove The next day I was going to upload more of the photos but was first going to go to the folder to look at some of them Here's a quick overview of how I have my folders set up On the desktop is a 'Pics quot folder In there is another 'Pics quot folder among with other files Inside that folder I have a selection of folders including all photos from so far ones that are edited and ready to print to different sizes and one Important files disappeared somehow on external harddrive, and I need them back! from my recent trip Inside the Important files disappeared somehow on external harddrive, and I need them back! recent trip folder I have folders dedicated to the different memory cards I used Recently I have been working only in the folders dedicated to the cards Anyway back to the story I open the 'Pics' folder on the desktop which is actually a folder in the external drive dedicated to my last computer so that everything is in the same place for when I transfer the files to a new computer soon When I try opening the second 'Pics' folder it gives me a message saying quot file extension cannot be opened File or directory is corrupted and unreadable quot It says the folder is empty All of my photos appear to be gone and I don't know how it could have happened like that I've been meaning to make backup DVD's but I'm busy right now and want to do it once I get my own computer again Obviously these photos are very important to me and I really need them back I know that even when things get deleted from the recycle bin that they can still be recovered with some programs I know that they couldn't have simply vanished from the harddrive or at least I dont think so I've tried two free programs so far ParetoLogic Data Recovery and Recuva I specifically searched the desktop to get to the more specific area of the drive and with both programs nothing has been found and Recuva a few times said there was an I O device error which has been a common message I have been getting after leaving it on for long enough and trying to do things So what can you suggest I'll do what it takes to get these photos back thousands of them Suggest free programs that might actually work or if I need to I'll buy a program My last option will be to take somewhere and pay a lot to see if it can be fixed Any help is very appriciated I'm not in a hurry as long as I know that the photos can be saved

Would this get more attention if it were in another forum on here such as the external drive forum (I think it's called). I just posted here because it is XP being dealt with on the machine.

PLEASE READ THE TOPIC TILL THE END I REALLY NEED SOMEONE S HELP Cluster Loss its (...) of Partition's Changing Important Size Files During Loss of Important Files Due to a Disconnection of an External USB HD During Changing its Partition s Loss of Important Files (...) During Changing its Partition's Cluster Size Cluster Size On Onetouch Heloo I have the Maxtor Onetouch external USB harddisk of GBs It has two partitions one is GBs and the other is the rest of the Harddisk s capacity which is I think GBs Here I am speaking about the large partition which is Z The partition Z s cluster size is KB the factory setting After it has become almost full with nearly GBs of video files I have decided to change its cluster size to the maximum KBs because I belive that having the hardisk stuffed with large files no less than MBs makes it better to have a larger cluster size to ease the Loss of Important Files (...) During Changing its Partition's Cluster Size access of the files To change cluster size I used Paragon Partition Manager version and I made sure it gave No warning regards the loss of the files or them getting corrupted During applying Loss of Important Files (...) During Changing its Partition's Cluster Size the cluster size change by Paragon which was made under Windows XP Pro SP where it wasnt necessary according to Paragon to restart the system to make the changes because drive Z contains No operating systems I said During applying the change something happened to the USB connection between the Computer and the Onetouch harddisk nearly in the middle of the process I heard that sound that you hear when you plug out a usb device off the usb port in the PC then in a second I heard the sound that you hear when the USB is plugged in Namely something occured that caused the USB drive to plug in and out very quickly in a second or two Here Paragon Manager showed an error message talking about a connection problem with the USB drive Later I have discovered that many of the video files are no longer working Trying to play them with VLC Windows Media Player and Windows Media Player Classic the videos basically AVI-Divx-XviD format either appear to be playing but no sound or picture and the video player s slider moves quickly not matching the real length of the movie Or the player simply crashes or Windows Explorer itself crashes What I tried to rollback this problem I have tried to return the partition to its original state with KiB of cluster size For this I tried Norton Powerquest s Partition Magic but I get an error during the process I tried Paragon Partition Manager first time I used version but it doesnt seem to give me the option to change the cluster size without formatting I used a tool called CDcheck to check the files hashes where it showed no problem with the files in terms of their hash records except for some files of the kind NFO ISO and MD SFV showing errors because the original files associated with these are non-existent But it showed no errors with the huge amount of the video files there I tried to defragment the drive and defragment the MFT but didnt help I also tried to copy some video files which didnt work to another location on a different local HD The copying was done suxesfuly but when trying to play it the same problem it crashes As I said above not all the files got corrupt I didnt examine all of them but most of them arent working For your notice the thing here is not alphabetical namely its not that the folders of video files starting with X or W which come at the end of the alphabetics are okay whereas the ones starting with A or B are corrupt The corrupt files are very random I could find a corrupt file and the file that comes directly after it in the alphabetical order is okay and playable So applying the cluster size change wasnt necessarily done according to the alphabetical order of the files This might not be useful but I want you to know all the things I tried to reverse that problem What can I ... Ok so my brother and I share a computer and he uses his own drive on my computer and decided to delete everything on that drive file by file. I use the main drive on the computer but he must of deleted something very important on that drive because now every time I try to install certain programs just doesn't work.
For example when I try to download Steam it says another installation is running.
Also "Error1336 there was an error creating a temporary file that is needed to complete this installation"
I have been googling this problem for months but I couldn't find a good solution. any help is greatly appreciated.

A:Some Important files were deleted on my Disc Drive, Now Installation Problems

Go to Start/Search and type CMD Right click the CMD icon in the search results and Run As Administrator. In Elevated Command Prompt type SFC/ scannow and press enter. This will replace any missing files.

So, I did a stupid thing, deleted some files, and crashed my computer. I tried a safe reinstall of windows (which was not supposed to write over anything) but even after that I can get windows to install/run properly. It's windows XP. My question is, is there a way the I can hook up the broken system to another computer and simply copy the files off of it? I know the exact directories of the files I want to get. Or is this something I'd be better off taking it to the local best buy for? Or just call it a day and re-format?
Not really sure what other info to supply you with, haven't opened either system to see if there is an empty slot to hook up to.
