Hp notebook computer wont startup past the hp screen. It shows a black screen then goes back to hp screen. I did the hard reset, it didn't work. I did the test and all of them said passed. It started doing this when i was reseting it and it dropped on the floor. The battery and the hard drive fell out. When i turned it back on, it wasnt working. I dont know what is wrong with it....http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Boot-and-Lockup/Wont-boot-up-past-hp-screen-shows-black-empty-screen/td-p/5609776
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
i was trying to put in a sata hard drive i bought recently my mobo would not detect it so i put my old on back in and it would not detect it either so i changed the boot order and now it wont boot at all its a black screen everything comes on but thats it ive tryed 2 power supplys ive tryed resetting cmos and taking the battery out and using 2 diffrent batterys i dont know what to do at all i dont think anything is fried or damaged
post your system spec's and how old is the mobo and does it have the latest bios? most boards that suppot Sata and IDe have three settings int he bios. 1. sata enabled PATA disabled 2. Pata enabled Sata disabled. 3. sata and pata enabled, sometimes referred to as "enhanced".
Hey guys I m usually pretty savvy with fixing these virus malware problems with my computer but this one seems to have me keeling over I believe it was a Trojan virus that infected my computer The reason I say this is because a similar screen to the Antivirus virus showed up saying it found a Trojan It completely froze my computer so I was forced to shut it down Upon reloading the computer it got to the black screen after windows loading screen and froze there with a movable cursor The computer stopped loading as a whole but the cursor was still able to be moved First step I tried was f upon loading and then reload windows with the last working configuration - This did not work Then I loaded [Black] Need XP past Wont - Screen help. Windows Go the computer in safe mode with networking ran rkill ran malwarebytes both fast and full system checks I believe it found the virus as many infected items were found I removed them then proceeded to restart the computer in normal mode Same thing happened computer stopped loading at black screen one you see immediately before you see your desktop I restarted again in safe mode with networking both safe mode and safe mode with networking work fine This time I performed a system restore for weeks prior to Windows XP Wont Go past [Black] Screen - Need help. this virus Restarted computer and system restore said there were no changes made Currently the computer will work in safe modes but still will not go past black screen What are my options here I understand at this point I can repair windows Windows XP Wont Go past [Black] Screen - Need help. with the cd but I was not sure if there were any other tricks with start-up to allow me to get through maybe some configurations were changed with virus Please do help at your convenience -Bret

Hi Guys I am having some trouble with my computer Some History- The PC is now over a year old and has been running fine for about a year AMD GT XP load Logo, past XP then Black Screen! wont - SLI-G Mobo GB Twinmoss Ram Sata HD DVD GT Sli Pixel View Graphics PCIe XP wont load past XP Logo, then Black Screen! Super Flower Watt PSU Now about months ago I XP wont load past XP Logo, then Black Screen! started to get the Nvidia card sentinal saying the Graphics Card isnt getting enough power and will reduce its performance to prevent any damage I checked it all out and it appear to be fine so pretty much ignore the issue About months ago my computer whilst playing a game would turn off the monitor and shut down the game in question was City of Heroes Some nights it would work fine others it would happen twice then run fine again Last week the computer was running really slow and had a process running at I fixed this by deciding to do a complete formatt and resinstall I reinstalled everything including the graphics card drivers the pop up about insufficient power was still there Everything was running fine until last night when the screen went in horizontal lines of greens and whites On a restart it gets to the windows logo with the progress screen and then remains blank I then restarted and up came the Windows did not start properly last time and listed the Safe mode options Obviously normal did not work but i could use both Safe modes Now thinking the PSU was at fault I ran out to get a new Watt PSU and the same thing happened I tried a System Restore and got everything running again until I installed my Graphic card drivers from the supplied CD On a restart it would only make it to the Windows logo So back into safe mode and I removed the drivers and it worked fine again So do I assume my Graphics Card has died although the fan is spinning on it and it appears on the Dos Start up when u first switch it on Is there something else I can do before I fork out for a new card Clear CMOS perhaps Regards Stuart nbsp
Longtime HP laptop owner I think I've owned nearly of them since the late s and have become loyal to HP laptops like many Apple people are to their Macs Iphones etc and my loyalty was increased after cheating on HP and buying ONE Dell laptop seemed to be a deal too good to pass up at time bad move So when I recently was ready to do a Dell Dumping I clicked the HP box for the brand on my first black either Envy get WONT 2 screen past Old Week "HP" w/sp... searches didn't even want to bother with other brands unless NOTHING looked good and then saw this HP Envy 2 Week Old Envy WONT get past either "HP" black screen w/sp... which I liked for being so thin AND had a backlit keyboard something I've never had and always kicked myself for not insisting on after buying as I use them often when I'm in bed and not only did this one have a backlit keyboard its a well lit keyboard and I was SO happy with this new HP nbsp Also should mention this was a refurbished laptop bought through Monoprice I saw the exact same model being sold as refurbished through several sellers and I'm contacting Monoprice next to see if that meant it was an HP refurb unit or Monoprice or some rd party job this was my first refurb laptop or really anything but have a couple of friends who've sworn by refurbs for laptops and other electronics nbsp Then it happened I believe I had to restart the laptop after it sat on my desk for a while and I didn't know the power strip was off so I restart it like normal and all I get is the black screen with the blue circular HP logo in the middle with the spinning circle below it and it just keeps going on and on and on I did some web searches tried a few suggested remedies one was with the BIOS I think rebooting the BIOS I forget the term they used but nothing and they suggested doing a system restore and sometimes the AUTOMATIC REPAIR screen eventually pops up but when I click to do that again NOTHING WORKS nbsp I was just going to contact HP support as they've been helpful in the past but wanted to try here first as I saw MANY posts on the net saying that with this issue or something close to it that HP Support has you jump through endless hoops if it ends up being a hardware issue which I sure hope it is not Even though I've only had it weeks and can still use the old laptop for now I really like this one and want to keep it Last thing I'll add is I use my laptops almost like a desktop almsot never take them out of the house and if I have to it is in a good well padded laptop case-I'm not bouncing this thing around all over the place or whatever other ways people beat up laptops of the time I either have it on my desk in my office at home or occasionally bring it to bed with me and even then no I don't roll over on top of it while I'm sleeping it is on the nightstand by then nbsp Any ideas for other ideas to try here I'd REALLY like to just get this one running again I'm not looking to have to look for another one I like ithttp://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Boot-and-Lockup/2-Week-Old-Envy-WONT-get-past-either-quot-HP-quot-black/td-p/5687444
hey guys, i'm having a nightmare with my pc. Kept getting an annoying dialogye bow popping up headed wscntfy.exe and it quoted 0x80000009 and something about not being able to read the memory. i searched for the error and discovered that it was infact a virus. I ran malwarebytes to try and eradicate the problem, it found 28 infections, all of which it was able to delete bar one which required the pc to be restarted. When i booted the pc all i get is a black screen, it comes up after the windows loading page. I can get to the safe mode options page but when i try to load safe mode i get the same black screen. Can somebody please help me as this is extremely annoying
Are you running two video cards? If so this might be why this is happening in safe mode. Try changing to the onboard video card and see if that helps.
Hi I have a Windows XP Home Edition operating Boot Welcome Wont Past Screen Pc system will Pc Wont Boot Past Welcome Screen not go beyond the blue welcome screen I ve pressed F and selected both the quot Last Known Good Config quot and the quot Safe Mode quot and in both cases it STILL won t go beyond the welcome screen On this forum I did find this post offering the following help last year quot Your CMOS may be corrupt Go into the BIOS setup screen and copy down all the settings as you want them with the power off open the unit and move the CMOS erase jumper to the clear position for however long the instruction book say to leave it there Move the jumper back to the normal position and turn the unit on The PC should report something like CMOS error -- defaults loaded and the real-time clock will be reset Go into the BIOS setup and re-enter your desired values Let us know what happens quot This is a bit greek to me I m not sure what or where the quot BIOS setup screen quot is or where the quot CMOS erase jumper quot is The most I have ever done is install additional memory Can anyone offer some step by step additional info or have any other ideas THANKS T
Hello thspencer11, and welcome.
I'm not sure if that will fix the problem. Did you make any system changes before this happened?
Can you get into safe mode? keep pressing the F8 key at startup and selecting safe mode from the list.
Hi I really hope someone can help me I have a fujitsu lifebook with windows on it I had an error message pop up when i tried to click on google chrome this morning so I closed it and attempted to re-start my laptop then AVG pops up telling me I have a virus so I allowed it to quot clear quot said virus I then wont screen and cursor with page, windows stuck load black Laptop past restarted my laptop and it would not go to the login page I attempted system repair to no avail I then allowed chkdsk to run and there were a lot of quot security ID repairs quot I have also tried f and booting from my windows installation disk Non of Laptop wont load past windows page, stuck with black screen and cursor these options have worked I get the fujitsu screen then the windows loading screen then instead of the log in screen which would be next I get a black screen with the cursor visable and you can move the cursor but nothing else works and no keyboard shortcuts work someone please help I've been told to restore the OS but i cannot afford to lose all the files on my laptop
Since AVG 'cleaned' a virus - all bets r off as the problem could be a leftover from the virus. apparently, a (some) system files r damaged. Going forward, u might not want to run normally as an admin user. That helps keep malware from invisibly installing if the AV does not catch it. 1. have u tried booting to safe mode? If u can get there try this clk Start - type CMD -- rt clk cmd.exe and select Run as Admin when the dos window opens type 'sfc /scannow' let it run retry boot when done. 2. If u can't get there or that doesn't work put ur windows CD in and boot to that. Run the repair install - or it might be called upgrade. Just do NOT do a CLEAN install. That will not erase any of your data. 3. If that does not work If u get a Hiren's boot disk, or something similar. U can boot to that and most likely copy ur data from the drive prior to doing a clean install. This assumes the drive isn't corrupt which appears to be true since it gets to the Windows screen. 4. If not u will have to remove the drive and connect it to another computer as an external HDD to copy the data. 5. If none of the above works - u have come to the complete understanding of the word BACKUP................ good luckhttp://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/295857-laptop-wont-load-past-windows-page-stuck-black-screen-cursor.html
Hi My pc running win XP wont boot past a blue grey blank screen.
Start up beeps, goes to ASUS boot screen and then the Windows XP screen with the loading bar and then to a dark blue/grey blank screen and hangs there.
I am currently able to boot in safe mode/networking.
Any ideas where to look for the fault?
May be one of the start up programs has a problem. You can run MSCONFIG | Startup tab. From there you can ENABLE/DISABLE the programs that start up during boot. I usually make a list of what I see in that tab. Assuming they are all enabled, I will disable them one at a time while I try to boot normally after. The one I disabled last that would cause the computer to boot normally could be the culprit.http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f10/xp-wont-boot-past-grey-screen-358366.html
The other day my sis was on my pc and was playing a game on the net and apparently the screen just turned off.. now when i start it up it gets to the windows xp boot screen but after that just goes black. i can start it up in safe mode so i can safely say it is not a monitor issue but i have no idea what it could be. i have tried all the different system restore checkpoints and it is still not working. i have tried just leaving it running and after aboput 45-60 min still nothing. any help would be very appreciated.
Change any drivers with a yellow in device manager.
After installing SP2 it wont boot past the slash before it locks up. It wont let me boot from the floppy or cd ( goes straight to splash screen). I have tried using F8, F10, F12, tab, & del to try and get me into the bios to change the boot order, with negative results. #1 what is causing this or what caused this? #2 HOW DO I FIX IT???
tap del key
Shut it off. As soon as you push the power button start tapping the "del" key. with some luck it will get you to the BIOS. What MB/BIOS or what brand computer?
my laptop froze, i turned it off, and when i started it, it said to go to repar thing, but then it said theres an error, and that i have to put in vista disc, which i havnt got, and when i tried loading vista, it wouldnt,

I just installed a hard drive a couple days ago. I spent hours re-installing and downloading software to the PC. I have Windows 7.Everything was going fine. This is what happened last night:
1. blue screen of death
2. restart in safe mode
3. System asks me if I want to repair windows. Didn't work
4. Now it won't boot past black screen.
Cooling fans are working...........no loose connections................monitor works fine when I watch DVD movie...................Did RAM test through Windows didn't detect a problem.
I don't have a boot-up disc. I don't know where to start troubleshooting.
Hi basically this probem arose from nowhere I came back from holiday days ago and my pc took longer than i remember to boot Only till i realised the next day and day after it was getting longer and some times not loading past the Windows screen Each time when it hasn t loaded fully I turn it off and re-boot pressing F to get up safe mode which doesn t work at all It gets stuck on avgdiseh doesn t load past and will stay like that till turned off Start up repair does absolutely nothing it asks to do System up Start Windows boot boot past and safe Screen, mode won't wont restore which then Windows wont boot past Start up Screen, and won't boot safe mode errors and reboots if i press cancel it stays on the Scanning screen for hours hours today I ve now seemed to run into another problem trying to boot from my CD drive First time I loaded everything correctly got to install windows screen clicked start up repair which did nothing Ever since that windows won t detect my CD drive even though it opens and did read CD s watched a film on it the other day I ve looked online and other people have had the same problems and clearly i haven t found a solution yet I ve tried cleaning the inside of my case double checking connections changing boot options From what i ve read its either a failed HDD failed RAM or failed CD drive in the case of my second dilemma I m just curious as to whether anyone can pin point what the problem is If its an easy fix or whether it is possible to fix Thanks for your time nbsp
it's the one following avgdiseh that is the problem
d/load and run the h/drive makers diagnostic utility on the h/drive
WIndows 7 premium home version on a lenovo laptop freezing at splash screen. I can boot into safe mode just fine. Elaborate on "changing the case". I'm interpreting, I took everything apart and moved moved it to a new box, in which case there's plenty of mistakes you could have made.

Hey there, ok my computer wouldnt boot, so i re-seated the Procesor, ram, and graphics card.. now.. Here is a bit about my computer.. MOBO is Asus A8n SLI Deluxe, AMD Atholon 64, Gforce 5500 FX 256mb , and 2 gig of ram(4 512 sticks).. Problem is, i have my SATA HD hookd up, and it boots as far as the windows loading screen, then says something like "Setup is restarting" thn goes to a blue scrren and i get a pop up saying "Insufficient System Resources Exist to Complete the API" then it rstarts and repeats..
now i tried hooking my reg HD up to it from my other computer, and it gets past the BIOS and then asks me to restart in safe mode or normal and all that stuff.. then onc i choose one it restarts.. Any ideas?? i need to get this working.. thanks..BTW im not that computer
Saavey.. but help is appreciated
did you redo the paste on the cpu when you disturbed it
are you trying to install to the sata
if you are,did you load a driver with f6 when it asks
have you set the bios to see the sata as ide
to hook up the drive from the other computer it will look for the m/b from the computer it came from and when it does not find it,it will stop dead in it's tracks
to run this drive you have to run a repair install of windows
it will get past logo screen then its just a flashing cursor
Hi, I have a HP g56 laptop running windows 7. However it wont boot into windows. When I turn the laptop on, I get the HP logo, at which point I can press ESC and get the following Menu:
F9)Boot Device Options
If I dont press esc to access this menu, then the computer just sits with a blinking line in the top left.
I have tried to hit F11 in the menu, but it doesn't work, it does what I said above.
I have ran System Diagnostics, but everything passed......
Right now I am waiting for Ubuntu to download so I can create a liveCD and see how that does..
What else can I do?
So im getting this error when trying to create a bootable USB drive on another laptop(Windows 7). Im trying to use my external hard drive as the USB drive.
-I have formatted the drive and tried in booth NTFS and exFAT...
Help please ;)
Ive got this old computer thats been working ok for years. i went out for a hour, and when i come back, its got the windows 2000 version of a bsod. its not the first time ive seen this screen, so i rebooted the computer. but when the motherboard's boot screen came up, i heard a click-whirr-beep sound eminate from the box. it sounds like it comes from the hard drive, im not sure though.
it then shows "f1 to retry boot f2 to setup" or something like that. f1 doesnt work, just reprints the same thing; f2 takes me to the bios.
any help would be appreciated.

But laptop works ? (Hdd led, fan etc)
If you connect the monitor, it should be automatically recognized
Hi, I uninstalled HP Protect Tools and all its parts in order to upgrade to Windows 10. It asked me to restart the computer and upon restarting, gray screen (appeared after HP logo) with "Login" label asked me for password for User ID = Administrator. I tried accessing BIOS etc. but it always requires password for User ID Administrator or BIOS admin. I do not have either of those. This has never happened before and I cannot start my computer now. I tried guessing the password, but after 3 times screen saying Authentication failed appears with "System locked. Press the power button to restart the system". Any help please? Thanks.
Dear Rekpet, Hi, My name is James. So to my understanding you are getting a grey screen upon starting up. Please could you attach a screenshot? Many Thanks James

I was playing Company of Heroes last night and in the middle of a game the system locked up. Not an rare occurrence, but not really common either. It locked up good so all I could do was do a hard shut down . When I restarted the computer it fired up and went to the initial screen that says ASUS as the motherboard began its thing. Well, that is as far as it got. It just hangs on that screen indefinitely. The fans and DVD drive all power up, and I can insert a CD, but all it does is make a repetitive ticking sound once the CD is in there. My keyboard does not light up and I can not enter set up by hitting delete. Anyone have any idea what my problem is? Is it motherboard or CPU? Thank you.

This laptop was working fine. i went to swap out the hard drive and that's when the nightmare began. At times we have found that if a laptop does not like the new imaged drive we go in and change the eSATA setting. I thought that was the case here. I changed it to RAID and now it won't come up at all. At first it would only build half of the splash screen.... now it builds the whole dell logo.... and goes to a black screen.http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19997054
I have this strange problem that will force me to can my AGP X PE if i cant get it fixed This is not a unique occurance but i didnt make the link until this morning The problem i was experiencing would be that if i changed the hardware in my pc when i turned it back on again it would show the boot screens then the windows xp loading bar then the prettier windows xp loading screen black background with the screen power shows disconnected black after on X850 mains boot colored logo then the screen goes blank In a good boot it would take a few seconds then my mouse pointer appears and windows loads but in this case the screen actually goes darker as if all power is no longer sent to the screen but my monitor doesnt state quot no signal quot Thats X850 shows black screen on boot after mains power disconnected as far as anything gets - i can hear windows xp load in the background but i cant be sure that it X850 shows black screen on boot after mains power disconnected gets all the way to end The only choice is a hard reset which sends me to the safe mode menu after Today i accidently overloaded a plug socket elsewhere in my house not a regular occurence and when i came to turn my pc on it did the same thing From this I think that the problem isnt me removing or changing hardware but my removing of the power cable from the back of the pc Its causing some sort of problem with the card settings that arent fixed easily The way ive fixed it previously would be to reboot in vga mode The ati Catalyst Control Centre then tells me i have the wrong driver for the CCC but thats probably cos its loading in vga mode using the windows driver I can then change driver but i cant just remove and reinstall the same driver I used the newest catalyst drivers this time and reinstalling them doesnt sort it out Installing newer or older or specifically quot not used since last windows reinstall quot does the trick but i cant be doing this permanently The ati pro i have does not have this problem when i remove power My bios battery cant be to blame as my clock doesnt lose time Im at a loss and cant find anything else on the internet that refers to the same problem Maybe its just borked any ideas guys nbsp
i fixed it this time by disabling the ati avstream in the hardware manager.
any clear ideas would be appreciated.
My laptop will not boot. I end up with an empty black screen or a blue screen with no icons, just a cursor. I get choices for 'normal startup' or ' repair' but not safe mode. Any help appreciated.

I am encountering an issue of when the Dell optiplex 755 boots up, it boots through the Windows XP logo just fine, once it tries to transition between the logo and loading the system up, it just shows a black screen and nothing else happens. I tried using a bootable Windows XP flash drive to repair the system files and it loads the Windows XP setup ok but when it runs through all of the commands on the bottom of the screen and the last one says "Starting Windows" , it takes me to a blue screen (screenshot below). I have HIRENS and have done a lot of the chkdsk commands to fix the files and everything comes back ok. I tried to clone the hard drive with the same exact hard drive and still the same issue. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks for your help in advance.

Try booting the PC into Safe Mode. Start your computer in safe mode
If successfully able to boot into Safe Mode try running a System Restore back to a date when it was working properly

i had my comp for like 3 months and then i stoped working the problem is that everytime i turn on comp it goes throught the motion but as soon as the part where the windows xp logo comes on it goes to a black screen with the message "system security type user password and press enter" but no user name shown and everytime i press enter it goes to another black screen with a blinking side ways cursor.
Well, I'm pretty sure this is a BIOS thing. (Inside your BIOS which you can access by hitting f8 repeatedly after booting up) There should be a security section. I'm sorry if this isn't spot on I'm very bad at remembering and I don't have the BIOS menu infront of me so bare with me. There is a setting though that lets you put a system password on. It's for extra protection. I don't understand why all of a sudden it's on but that's what it sounds like. So go into your BIOS and find the PW part and disable it.http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f10/windows-xp-wont-boot-black-screen-162839.html

Welcome to TSF
You should check for hardware issues before trying to install Vista on the system.
Also when im on the black screen the laptop starts to burn up.
This statement does not sound good. What do you mean by "burns up"?
What are the hardware specifications ? Make/model? What OS was on it originally?

I would exercise the Recovery Console option, try to run the chkdsk /r command.
Type 1 where it asks for O/S and hit Enter.
Hit Enter at the password line.
At the next line...type chkdsk /r and hit Enter.

Since then it is stuck in a loop of black and white screen showing my CPU speed and giving options of F2 for settings or F8 for Boot, neither of these work and it just goes back round the loop.
I bought the PC second hand and do not have Win XP discs!!!!
Please help I am lost without my computer.
Does it have a restore partition? Sounds to me like time to buy an XP cd as repair or check disk any of the options would require one.
Hi, really need all your urgent help as I'm freaking out a bit as its not really my comp, and its fairly new.
Okay my computer turns ON, but makes less noise than it used to when working, and just shows a black screen...doesn't even enter bios.
Ok, I installed a new Graphics card, radeon hd 5450, installed the drivers etc, got it working perfectly. Then a short while after I also downloaded a reputable program called watt 2.2.5 to clear my windows non genuine message.
Then shortly after both, I was changing my theme, and the computer screen just went blank. Even keyboard wasn't working (I was pressing "caps" to see if caps light would come on and it didn't). So I powered off, now I just keep getting black screen! What has happened? How can I fix this? Really need your help! Thanks
do you no your way around the in side of your system? if so try removing the battery from your motherboard and leave the power unpluged for about 1 hour then put the battery back and plug your power cord back in and see what happens.
My laptop is a Acer aspire z running windows home premium bit and my problem is screen wont boot Laptop BIOS no Black my laptop will not start Laptop wont boot Black screen no BIOS When I turn my laptop on it starts to run like normal GPU fan starts Disk drive kicks in and the LED for the on button is working but nothing on the screen I've tried too do alt f for a restore nothing happened I've also tried to plug it into a monitor and my tv Before this occurred it had been turned off during boot don't ask why I cannot answer that and I preceded to take it apart to fix the overheating issue due to acer not putting fan holes on the bottom of the laptop thanks Acer - - and I didn't realise something was wrong with it until I reassembled it and tried to turn it on So I'm not sure whether is corrupt BIOS a hardware problem or corrupt MBR my own personal diagnosis don't know whether it's right or not Also I have tried turning the laptop off taking the battery out letting the motherboard discharge then pressing the power button for a minute leaving it for a minute putting the charger in then turning it on Thanks
You may need to take it apart again and make sure everything is connected properly. Did you follow steps to keep yourself grounded while working inside the system?
As you add and remove hardware, follow these steps for ESD safety:Shut down and turn off your computer.
Unplug all power supplies to the computer (AC Power then battery for laptops, AC power for desktops)
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to close the circuit and ensure all power drains from components.
Make sure you are grounded by using proper grounding techniques, i.e. work on an anti-static workbench, anti-static desk, or an anti-static pad. Hold something metallic while touching it to the anti-static surface, or use an anti-static wristband to attach to the anti-static material while working. If you do not have an anti-static workbench, desk, or pad, you can use your computer tower/case by finding a metal hold in it, such as a drive bay.
Once these steps have been followed, it is safe to remove and replace components within your computer.

You can try a sytem restore to before the problem occurred. If this doesnt work for you re-install may be required.
Boot off your recovery disk, and see if it has advanced recovery utilities. You will be looking for System restore. If not, try this (one moment while I pull up the tutorial for creating advanced recovery utility disk.
Follow Instructions provided for creating Recovery Disk. You will then place the recovery disk in drive, restart, at "hit any key to boot from disk" hit a key, and boot into recovery disk. Click System Restore. Follow prompts to restore to a point Before the problems occured. DO NOT USE REGISTRY CLEANERS!, and install a top of the line antivirus/antimalware program, and I recommend using Windows Defender also.(malware may be part of your problem)
Create a Vista recovery Disk to Access Sytem Recovery options
Both of these programs are top of the line:Vista SP1 Antivirus Performance or:New NOD32 4 & Smart Security 4 Released!!!
(I recommend Eset's NOD32 Antivirus/Antispyware version 4.0 with Windows Defender):
Free Eset NOD32 online scanner/cleaner
Free antivirus - Avira AntiVir (download)
Eset NOD32 Antivirus 4 (64-bit) (download)
boots fine in safe mode but not normal mode. any ideas how to fix without wiping the drive and reinstalling from the recovery partitition? this has happened 2 times before and I restored from the recovery partition... and it works fine for a while. I think my friend is downloading or clicking on something that is causing this. I know he tinkers with combofix from time to time.
Ive run checkdisk, startup repair. all seem to waste my time and nothing else. cant do system restore because no restore points were created it would seem.

when i turn on my laptop, the power led indicator turns on and i could hear the fan running for 1-2 seconds then it stops and absolutely nothing shows on the screen, this keeps happening randomly and i keep force shutting down then turning it on again till it boots up to normal
also sometimes some random freezes occur (i dont know if its related..)
HP Pavilion beatsaudio - Black screen and wont boot.. getting 5 set of double beeps... Screen stays black... can hear fan noise... after 5 set of double long(abt a second) beeps the power LED stays on, but the caps lock makes double blinks (1 sec gap) after every 3-4 seconds (I think its same as double beep).... Per support pages, double beep means BIOS issue, so I tried both BIOS resetting options of 1. Holding Windows + B keys and 2. All 4 arrow keys to reset BIOS... didnt work... Then removed the CMOS battery (tested with multimeter and it has 3V power on it) put it back in... still no luck... Am running out of options now... can anyone suggest any other options or explain me whats going on? TIA...AllPisces

Hi @lasernat,Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community!I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion dv7-3065dx Notebook and it having startup issues. Try performing a BIOS reset, restore the settings to BIOS Factory default settings. When performing a hard reset please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices. Here is a link to computer won't start for Windows.Plug the power adapter directly into a different wall outlet. Do not plug it into a power strip, surge protector, or secondary power source as this could cause and issue.Try to connect to a monitor to see what happens.Have you tried reseating Memory and the HDD?Please let me know how this goes. You can say thanks for trying to help by clicking the Thumbs Up below!.Thanks.http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Boot-and-Lockup/dv7-3065dx-wont-boot-black-screen-need-a-bios-file/td-p/5599667
Hello I hope someone here can help with this older computer This is an Windows XP Hp Pavilion a c machine that was showing signs of the hard drive Wont boot, cursor screen right before black windows with logo going bad due to reallocated sectors A new hard drive was purchased and using Acronis a clone of the drive was made The original drive is still booting and working ok but a little slow at times Also windows did have some malware programs on Wont boot, black screen with cursor right before windows logo the drive which were cleaned up with combo fix malware bytes and some Wont boot, black screen with cursor right before windows logo other cleaning programs before the clone The original drive still boots fine in the computer but the new drive Wont boot, black screen with cursor right before windows logo will get past the bios loading screen and sit there with the cursor You can press ctrl alt delete to reboot and you can boot to cd's such as knopix or hirens which i have done to check on things I have since downloaded the latest bios from HP and installed it using the old drive I have also ran chkdsk and selecting to repair I have also tried re-cloning the drive in case the clone might have gone bad even though no errors were reported The hang is before it starts to load windows so no f for safemode From reading other forum posts I suspect that a rootkit might be the issue however with the original drive booting fine I am not sure I would like to try to fix the problem rather then a re-install since there are a lot of important programs that would be difficult tore-install again But the more I have looked and tried that is starting to look like the only option I am not sure if help is still being provided for this old of a system but I would appreciate any help anyone can give Thank you

I tried Linux yesterday, and wrote over my previous Windows bootloader files with GRUB.
I later that day (as I could not boot into Windows 7), I deleted the Linux partitions with Windows 7 DVD.
Now, after BIOS I just get a white blinking border on a black screen.
bootrec /scanos (Total identified Windows-installs: 0)
I also tried the "automatic" systemrepair (1st choice in the DVD menu, with no luck)
Can someone please help me?

Hey everyone Well last night I was just enjoying my new computer when the power went off in my house for a second the power immediately came back recognize drive up, external on wont screen Vista-Black hard boot on and then of course the same thing happened No lightning not even any clouds My computer is connected to Vista-Black screen on boot up, wont recognize external hard drive a brand new about a week old cyber power surge protector so I figured everything was ok when I tried to boot my compuer up again it went trough all of its tests and then a black screen I left it for about minutes until I got frusterated and turned it off I was able to boot Vista-Black screen on boot up, wont recognize external hard drive up in safe mode but it took forever I tried a system restore why not and then when I restarted I had to wait at the black screen for about minutes and then it booted up I have to go through this everytime now and sometimes I have a problem shutting down Once everything boots up everything Vista-Black screen on boot up, wont recognize external hard drive in windows works fine eccept it wont recognize my external hard drive I can hear that the computer sees it but it wont come up Do you think that it is a hardware issue now or is it the mobo or something else I just dont know It is wierd that windows still functions fine once it is up Could anyone PLESE give me any advice on the situation Im not exactly an expert when it comes to this so I am completely lost Thank you nbsp
let if fail and then take it back to where you got it from , assuming its a new PC it should have warranty with it.
My grandpa has a laptop with windows on it He recently fell for a phone scam where some guy tricked him into letting him take control of his computer and pay him hundreds of dollars for security software that doesn't work All we know is that they turned off his firewall and added some kind of virus malware boot. Ran with cursor only. anti-virus software, screen Black wont computer that was alerting him every Ran anti-virus software, computer wont boot. Black screen with cursor only. time he opened up a web browser Luckily I came for a visit in time to take a look and I ran a few different programs to put things back together the best that I know how First I set a recovery point just in case then I ran CCleaner taking some bloat off as well as some programs we were sure he didn't install nor were used recently I ran a Herd-protect scan and took a bunch of things off with that and then I used Panda Internet Security to scan once more before I went to bed It was working really well before I ran that last scan so I figured I was accomplishing something nbsp Now to the real problem which is that now the computer wont boot properly Specifically I turn it on and I get the spinning lights loading screen for a minute then a black screen with a mouse on it The mouse moves fine and it looks just like it does before it opens the log in screen nbsp I tried to open Safe Mode but I guess Windows doesn't always respond to F while booting I can't use ctrl alt del at any point and it doesn't go into Automatic Repair Mode either I've been looking at other people's questions and found two that give an executable file to run off a flash drive while booting Besides the fact that I can't work this out right now being at my grandparents house without a flash drive I don't trust this method to even start while I boot or to be legitimate and not another bad idea to add to the list of bad ideas that seem to make the problem worse XD So I need a quick opinion should I run the executable file one of them is called Farbar Recover Scan tool I forget the other Another answer I found suggested updating the BIOS and the graphics driver which I still need to be able to run in normal mode once and I have yet to succeed at that- apparently there is a trick by putting the computer to sleep and waking it again to force it to open the login screen but it wont work either nbsp Is there another way to get into safe mode for windows and if anyone can shine light on what I did to cause this breakdown in the first place that would help so that I don't make the same mistake again Thank you and if I can get a speedy response with any tips or insights that would be super helpful since I'm only down here until fridayhttps://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/e9458501-02c7-4e57-a090-44b6f9a7c821/ran-antivirus-software-computer-wont-boot-black-screen-with-cursor-only?forum=w8itproperf
Hi Everyone As the title says about i have a Dell Vostro and im running Windows with a bit It is only years only It started about a month ago I was on my laptop viewing and Black screen. Vostro login screen Dell reach Wont 1520. deleting some unwanted photos i had A few minutes later Dell Vostro 1520. Black screen. Wont reach login screen i realized that i deleted a photo that i wanted So i went to the recycling bin and restored that photo When i went back to my photos and went into the album it said something like i do no have permission to access this folder Please press continue to get full permission I clicked continue and i got the access i should have Now i tried many more random folders and the same Dell Vostro 1520. Black screen. Wont reach login screen thing happened Also when i came Dell Vostro 1520. Black screen. Wont reach login screen out of the folders the folders had a big pad lock sign on the front of it After that i shut down the laptop and went to turn it back on The laptop will power on like normal I can press f for the boot options which i have already tried many times I also tried it in safe mode and what-not but still nothing I can hear the fan and stuff spinning up like normal I have also put and CD into the CD ROM and that spins up fine So after the Dell logo on the screen it goes black and stays that way with the cursor You can move the cursor around no problem I should also add that the battery light is and has been flashing for a good wile Its flashing orange and blue I m wondering if this has anything to do with the battery Because my laptop will not charge with the AC adapter in it for many months now It will only stay powered on with the AC adapter plugged in One more thing The LED lights over the buttons None of the are flashing besides one on the far left And i cant find out anywhere what this LED light stands for It looks like a battery to me Any advice would be so great The way it is now i don t care about the laptop I really want to hope i can save my pictures and videos i have on there nbsp
Since its a laptop the harddrive is easy to pull out and remove. If you have or can get a usb sata/ide connector hook the drive to that and then to another computer if you have one so you can save all of your important data like pix, music, etc.The laptop battery is going to have to be replaced since its no longer charging properly. It sounds like there might be a short somewhere or a power supply problem along with a bad battery.Or possibly something might be wrong with the screen or video or graphics card.
hi my laptop screen is set to turn off after 5 mins, when it does i cannot wake it, no matter what buttons i push or using my mouse. this black screen also happens when i restart my computer, it logs me off the the screen goes black and computer power lights are still on and it does nothing HELP! haha thanks
Boot the computer and press F8 in the Advanced Boot menu choose Last Known Good Configuration.
What is the make and model# of the computer? Go to the manufactures support/download drivers site and download the Chipset and the Video driver for the computer.
Go to Start/Search and type powercfg.cpl. Right click the powercfg results and Run As Administrator. Click Change Plan Settings/change Advanced power settings. Reset your power settings to your liking.

Hey I need immediate help!
It's my sis' previously-formatted HP Pavilion dv5201tx! The problem is as the title above. I can go into safe mode. I've used system restore twice. And in Documents and Settings folder I noticed it has:
Administrator.computer description name
Administrator.computer description name.000
Is it creating more user folders? At some point Administrator.computer description name.000 wasn't there. Corrupted registry hive? I'm not sure! Restarted many times, used Last known good configuration, and it's still black after the boot screen. Please help quick, she uses it a lot. Thank anybody so much..
Everytime I turn on my computer, I see nothing but black screen on my monitor and a small orange LED light. I have tried two different vga cables, 2 different monitors, put my graphic card into different agp slots, and also my mobo has a integrated graphics card and i have tried to use that too, still the computer isnt sending any images to the screen. I think the mobo it self might be malfunctioning.
I was wondering if anyone has any other ideas on what could be causing this problem.

Hi, If you have more than one Memory Module installed, try the following. With reference to the link below, remove one of your memory modules and then see if the notebook will boot. If it doesn't, try the same module, but in the other slot. If is still doesn't boot, try the other memory module in both slots, to see if any combination will allow the notebook to start. The procedure for removing these modules is detailed starting on Page 64 of your Maintenance & Service Guide. Regards, DP-K?http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/HP-wont-go-past-welcome-HP-screen/td-p/847815

I've been trying for about two days to access my laptop but I keep running into the HP black screen and it doesn't go beyond that. I've tried to reboot in save mode and tried to factory reset, none of the two options are getting past the HP black screen. If anyone or there has any tricks ,tips or solutions I'd truly appreciate it.
On a side note, it often says it isPREPARING AUTOMATIC REPAIRthis too has been there for several days ????http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/My-laptop-is-not-getting-past-the-HP-black-screen/td-p/5836620
Installing Windows 7 64 bit over Vista Ultimate 64 (clean install). When I get to the point where the PC is starting Windows for the first time, I get the splash screen that says, starting windows, the screen goes black, the hard drive churns for a while then stops but I never get a display. No cursor, no functions, nothing.
I tried ctrl+alt+del, nothing,
pressing various keys nothing.
When I restart the computer i get the prompt to start in a different mode. I try safe mode and the PC tells me it can't finalize setup in safe mode and prompts to restart.
If I let the computer sit (overnight), it just goes to sleep.

I have windows XP & use MS security essentials. This am security software said I had been invaded. I checked MS Security program to be certain it was legit. I had program delete the virus & trojan horse. After rebooting I have a black screen, a task bar that is almost empty, a start button. When I push start the left side of window is blank, still have "my computer", "control Panel", etc. When I click all programs it says (empty). I am not proficient at repairing. Any help you can offer would be appreciated. I can go to AOL for my email, as it is one of the icons left on the task bar. I have lost MS Outlook and Internet explorer, although I can use search to pull up internet explorer. Thanks for your help.
I could be wrong, but I'm guessing your Registry has been corrupted by the malware, or removing the trojan has also removed some important system files etc.
1.) Do you have System Restore enabled? I don't usually recommend using it to revert a system back to working settings when there were viruses involved.. (see this article for more info on why)
..but if you have a restore date prior to the date of cleaning the infection, that may help bring things back to normal.
If you can get things working that way, you can try alternate methods of removal since the virus/trojan will still be there.
2.) If the above doesn't/didn't work, do you have a Windows XP installation disk? You can perform a repair install which may fix the damage caused by the trojan/removal of the trojan.
HELP! Virus has taken over my pc! Takes forever to boot the most I can do is press CTRL+ALT+Delete to view or end processes. I have once gotten to the window but it won't let me click anything after Start->Program! I can get to the black OS screen, ocassionally safe mode but it will hang for a while. If I down load a virus removal exe how can I run it if I can't get access to run CD at Windows XP? Pls help. Stuck!

So I burned the recovery disk with a different program and am now able to get into the System Recovery Options. From there I can't figure out what to do and apparently there are no previous restore points. Also, Startup Repair does nothing for me..http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/373516/cant-get-past-black-screen-w-blinking-cursor/

Turn on the computer and keep tapping the "F8" key to bring up the Safe Mode Menu. Then once the menu comes up, select "Last known good configurations" and see if this option get's the computer booting to Windows.
Hope everything works out well.

Hey guys im having some problems with my laptop at the moment, it seemed to be fine the other day, i dont know if anyone has been messing with the settings on it but i turned it on today and the screen has gone all weird, it seems to look like its been moved to the right, the windows xp logos have changes colours but in patches and i cant read anything on the f8 screen as every word is missing a few letters and the black screen behind the writing will flash green with stripes on it if any button is pressed and also it will not pass the windows xp screen on startup after that its just black, it dosent turn off it just stays black. :S does anyone have any suggestions ? thanks
Can u describe ur issue more clearly? What do u mean by win xp screen?
I am pretty sure something is wrong with BIOS, and that the sollution would be flashing the BIOS. The problem is that i cant flash it when it wont enter BIOS/Windows or anything else. I can't even boot from a CD.
So i thought, is it possible to connect the laptop to my stationary and flash the BIOS from there?
Ofcause if you got any other ideas i'd be glad to hear em
When i try pressing f11 after the hp screen is showing, nothing happens. If i tap f11 during the start-up, it says "f11... System recovery" i the down left corner, but nothing happens. (Esc after 7 sec is no good either)
And yes i know flashing the bios is the last thing to do, but i've allready had it to a technitian which couldn't repair it. It's out of garantee so it was a freelancer, not hp themselves.

Hi Everyone, hopefully you can help me, running win xp on comp (not this one) when i start comp it doesnt go past the very first inital screen which is compaq (name of comp), have tried pressing f8 on start up but it still doesnt let me move to another screen, have checked all wires are plugged in correctly, and it was shut down properly on last use, anyone got any ideas what the problem may be??
I have a Compaq Presario and if I press the ESC button at bootup if will bring up the boot menu, you might try that and see if that will work.
Windows 7 Home Basic, in a HP DM1, AMD E-350, 4gb RAM, 320 GB HDD.
Last played a movie using HDMI. Returned to use it a few hours later and it took forever to load. Once it did, it took me to an unfamiliar home page.
Turns out I was logged in to a temporary profile. I found my files but did not dare move them yet. Tried F8 and then startup repair. (It said i attached a device and should disconnect and then restart) Then I tried a regedit fix (HKLM .. profiles). After that I cant seem to login even in safe mode. Got a very short message (fatal error) in a BSD.
Help will be greatly appreciated.

Go to Safe Mode
Repeatively press F8 on system startup, and log into Windows under Safe mode
Please try this:
Manual steps to run Chkdsk from My Computer or Windows Explorer
Open My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
Click Properties, and then click Tools.
Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed
Use one of the following procedures:
? To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start.
? To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start. (tick)
? To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box.
Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?Click to expand...
Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.
Wait until Chkdsk finishes Checking / Repairing any faults
Windows will then either restart your computer or continue loading Normally.

Hi and welcome to TSF I think you may have caused your self more problems by running the reg cleaner and if you can borrow a copy of xp the same as your installed version you might be able to run a repairhttp://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f10/windows-xp-pro-restart-loop-wont-go-past-black-screen-672351.html
Hi everyone Yesterday I wanted to install OS X Mavericks on my HDD It requires a primary partition so I decided to delete the MB system reserved partition that Windows automatically creates when you first install it I read this guide which explains how to transfer all the boot files from the system reserved partition to the partition where Windows is installed I followed all the steps with Black 8.1 screen cursor logo past Windows except for the last one When it says to do a Code reagentc enable I skipped it because when it first says to do Code reagentc disable the output of the program was quot reagentc was not enabled quot so why enable it if it was already disabled Later I will understand that maybe this was the source of all Black screen with cursor past Windows 8.1 logo future problems Then I rebooted and tried to delete that system partition from within Windows but of course it prevented me from doing that I booted gparted live and went on and deleted the partiton Now Windows would not boot and I did not have Windows disc to make a system repair So I put Windows disc and it managed to put boot files back it did not detect any windows installation but still managed to make Windows boot I forgot to say that I have another primary partition other than windows and it's a boot partition where GRUB is installed So I booted in linux and reconfigured GRUB to make it boot my Windows partition dev sda instead of the just deleted one dev sda I rebooted and Windows started fine Then I launched the Utility for creating and editing partitions because I wanted to reduce the main Windows partition and make space for Mavericks At this point Windows told me that the drive had problems and I had to do a chkdsk before resizing the partition I rebooted chkdsk finished and I got a Black Screen Of Death which told me that there were some problems with the partition but I could still press enter and go on Here I had a one-element list like the one you get when you press F at boot time The only entry was quot Windows Pro Recovered quot I pressed enter I went on and boot logo appeared Then it gets stuck on a black screen with the cursor and keyboard working actually I can move the pointer and put my laptop in standby and so on But no way Windows actually boots I can say I have tried everything I have now a Windows USB install and I tried fixmbr bootsect nt c bcdedit and so on but they failed Automatic repair fails as well and C Windows System Logfiles Srt Srttrail txt says that there are no errors Refresh does not work I run a Code chkdsk c r f but it says there are no bad clusters and it ends with quot failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status quot Anyway I can see all my files from the elevated command prompt I get with the USB with Windows on it so at least my files are safe I know I wrote a lot and my english is terrible but please do you have any suggestion Thank you EDIT SOLVED I formattedhttp://www.eightforums.com/general-support/47669-black-screen-cursor-past-windows-8-1-logo.html
