Will a PC AGP Video card work in a Mac G4 tower?

Q: Will a PC AGP Video card work in a Mac G4 tower?

I have a fairly new Radeon 8500 video card (the 128 MB version) in my PC. I need to replace the card in my G4 to get my new cinema display to work. Will the PC Radeon card work in the G4 tower? It has an AGP slot for the video card. I am just wondering if there is a difference between Mac and PC AGP cards?

Preferred Solution: Will a PC AGP Video card work in a Mac G4 tower?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:Video Card For Dell Vostro 200 Mini Tower

Windows will allot 50% of your ram by default, for when you need them programs. Remember, rams fastr than hard drive, and why have all that ram and not use it.

For your power supply, a nvidia 430/440 or an ati/amd 6450, maybe get away with a 6550... Seasonics are quality.

The slowdown is probably because Vista is a bit more of a beast than xp, and graphics can be a bit more hefty.

i have a Dell Vostro Mini Tower with the following specs:Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3470 CPU @ 3.20GHz
4GB RAMIntel(R) HD GraphicsI have ran a System Requirements check and it says I have 2048MB of Video RAM.  i would like to upgrade this to 4GB if possible.  would anyone be able to recommend a card that is compatible with my computer?I understand the wattage of my power supply matters also, would anyone know what this is?Thanks in advance

A:Upgrading Video Card on Dell Vostro 270 Mini Tower

The 2GB you are referring to is how much system ram is being given to the onboard Intel GPU video to use. You cannot increase that to 4GB. But you can add a discrete PCIe x16 video card. The Vostro 470 has a 300w power supply. So that will limit you as to which video card you can use. The two video cards that we shipped on this model were =
YG17P Nvidia GeForce 640GT 1GB67V2J Nvidia GeForce 620GT 1GB
Or you could remove our power supply and install a higher wattage power supply and then get a better video card.

I'm considering buying a used Dell OptiPlex GX790 MT computer, and I'm wondering what the maximum video card length can be without having to remove the hard drive cage.

A:Used Dell OptiPlex GX790 Mini tower video card

The hard drive cage isn't the only problem.  The power supply is not standard.
So a short GTX750 TI non SC would be the max.

I had a NVIDIA GT 210 card in previously which I sold and bought an R7 240 to upgrade with. When plugging in the R7 240 and booting up. I get NO VIDEO SIGNAL. NO BIOS SPLASH SCREEN etc.
NOW if I take the card out and use the onboard VGA it works fine. The NVIDIA GT 210 worked fine too.

Why does this card not work? Is there a solution to my problem?

We have a Dell 390 tower that has 1 pcie x16 port and 2 pcie x1 ports. We have 3 additional videos cards other then the onboard but we are having difficulty getting all the video cards to work. The mutiple option only comes up when you add the video card in pcie x 16 slot but will not come up if you remove that card and put video cards into the other slots. Need help getting all video cards to work at the same time.
Additional Video Cards ( all 3 besides onboard) are :
EVGA GeForce 8400 GS DirectX 10 01G-P3-1303-RX 1GB 64-Bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card
We have converter cables converting the pcie x 16 to pcie x 1. We've seen where other people with this same setup have gotten them all to work together but we just can't crack the code...any suggestions?

Hi TechSpot folk, and thanks for in advance for anyone who can help me.

I've bought myself a new video card yesterday; HIS Radeon X1650 Pro 512mb IceQ, AGP. I went ahead to install it, and I get no picture after booting up.

I am receiving a signal to the monitor (I am not getting a "check signal" message) but no image comes to the PC. I went to put my old card in which is a Gigabyte 128mb 9600 Pro, and it now it doesn't work either!!!

Both cards are receiving power as theirs fans are chugging along.

I had also purchased a 1gig stick of RAM to complement my new video card, so I set my PC up the way it was before the attempted installation of the new card. Still nothing happening.

Current components of PC are:

P4 2.8ghz (D865PERL)
Gigabyte Radeon 9600 Pro 128mb
512mb RAM
DVD and Lite-On burner

A:New video card install no good, now older card doesn't work either

I don't know about the 9600 Pro but the X1650 Pro should have a power connector on it. Possibly a floppy drive type connector. Was that plugged in?

Flexible Riser Card:

Now what i'm planning to do is replace my 305Watt Dell PSU with that one, stick the riser card in my PCIe slot, connect the HD 4870 to the riser card, and then ...???...!!!...Win?

Anyone know if this setup should work?

A:Will This Video Card / PSU / Riser Card Setup Work?

What would you need the riser card for? I see plenty of space in the case from the looks of it but even if you do use the riser card, the video card may be blocking airflow from and to the CPU. Check the dimensions to be sure IMO.

Otherwise, everything else looks great.

Should work, however S-Video is an extremely low quality signal (640*480). You would be better off buying a DVI to HDMI converter and connecting through that. OR buy a card with HDMI support built in.

Hope this helps,

Hi, I have a question about using a second power supply! I want to use a second PSU to power a GeForce GTX 750 Ti.I need a seperate PSU to power this because I can't upgrade or remove the power supply in my 8200 Elite, as this model contains a PSU that is uniquely shaped just for this computer.  The PSU installed right now isn't powerul enough for the GTX 750 Ti.When I remove the old video card and insert the new video card, is there any type of connector that will allow me to connect the GTX 750 Ti to the second power supply?  If the card only connects to the PCIe port, it won't be able to draw enough power, so I need to know if there is a cable that lets me plug the video card into the second power supply. Thanks for your help!-OatmealNuggy

A:new video card won't work

There is a chance that the video card is 3volt and youre mother board only supports 5 volt. The 7300GT is a very weak video card and shouldn't have put any stress on the PSU. Case and PSU doesn't make a computer, but it your PC is more like 8 years old. My keyboard was made in 1997... but my PC was built about 6 months or so ago.

You're working with very old tech... and you seem to be intrested in gaming. Put the old girl out to paster. With SATA being standard nowadys, PATA drives will be limiting. Get your money back on the 7300 AGP which is about $85. An $85 PCIe video card is about 7~10x faster than the 7300.

Modern mobos only have a single PATA port... you can use the 400GB and a DVD burner. Older HDs are so noisy anyways.

For a modern system, you're really looking at replacing almost everything. If the case is good - keep it.... but good modern cases have large low-speed RPM fans that do a better job of cooling the system than those cases made 6+ years ago. An Antec300 can be bought for about $50 and includes 2 large fans. Has USB2.0 ports on top/front. And has excellent cooling. The PSU would need to be a 450~550watt new unit as standards have changed and your OLD PSU will not work on any modern board.

For a low-end dual core AMD system. Rough pricing:

$60 = 2.6Ghz dual core 5050e
$55 = Gigabyte 740G chipset motherboard with PCIe
$20 = 2GB of RAM (but you can get 4GB for $20~50)
$50 = OCZ 500watt PSU (or Coolermaster...) as low-end as I would go

Add optional case. Three Hundred (sometimes on sale for $45 at microcenter)

The onboard video is weak, barely play UT2004 in low-detail. But a $60~80 video card such as these allows me to play pretty much ALL my games in 1920x1200, including UT3:

A:Can't get my video card to work......

Well if you just reinstalled your operating system which sounds like it did.

The first thing you must do is install the Mobo Drivers.

i believe you are confusing yourself over the word RAID SATA and IDE.

IDE is a format used for the old HD that has the 32 pin in the back.. actually i forgot how many pins..its been a while since i have used one.
SATA HD is the new type of HD that has that small L connection for data and possibly power.

Raid is another way of saying how you would like your computer to treat more than 1 HD in your computer. an example If you have more than 1 HD.. you could tell your computer to put same data on 2 drive at the same time. RAID is a bit complicated to explain... however the jist of must have 2 HD minimum to set up properly. You can always install an operating system without it ON.

Mobo Drivers really is more for the internal motherboard things. such as the northbridge drivers and southbridge driver .. sound card.. and nic card if they are intergrated.
video card may be part of that as well if intergrated. Thus you definitly want to install the mobo drivers after installing an OS. Once those mobo drivers are installed. Go ahead and reinstall your vidio card driver.

Do not worry yourself over the RAID/SATA/IDE part as that has already been resolved by your BIOS since you are able to get to your OS.

Hi, I recently bought Medal of Honor: Airborne, and it will not work because it says my video card is not supported. I was hoping someone could recommended one that'll work in my system. I plan to get more games like this in the future. My budget for the card would be anything up to around ?200. I live in Ireland.

Here's a picture of the label on my power supply. Not sure what info you need off it.

Here's the images from CPU-Z. If I've left out anything please let me know. Thanks.

A:What Video Card Would Work With My PC?

That computer is a basic, budget Dell 530. It is not really designed for high end video graphics cards.
However, Dell lists these video cards as working with this machine:
ATI Radeon 2400 Pro 128
ATI Radeon 2600 Pro 256
ATI X1300 Pro 256
ATI Theatre 650 Pro, and the Pro Combo
NVidea GeForce 8300 GS 128
NVidea GeForce 7300LE 128
NVidea GeForce 8600 GT 256
So anything that matches the specs of the above should work fine... But I would be extremely careful about the power requirements. The Dell power supply will not handle a high-end video graphics card... though you should still be under warranty if it does.

I was looking up some video cards today, and I stumbled upon the ASUS GeForce GT 710. It's a nice card, for the price, but my PSU is only 270 W and here it says that the card requires at least 300 W:
GeForce GT 710 | Specifications | GeForce

And my motherboard is an ATX, I think (Don't know if that matters). Here it is: HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Motherboard Specifications, MS-7525 (Boston) | HP Customer Support
Also, it's a normal card, and my system requires a low-profile one. Can it somehow fit in and run without any issues?

A:Will a 300 W video card work with a 270 W PSU ?

Hi. Its not just the wattage that you have to be concerned with but the type of connector the graphics card you are interested in is using.

You also have to take into account the power requirements of the other components in your system and total them up. You can use the pcpartpicker to do this for you. Once you have added all your existing components it'l total up the wattage they use. It will also alert you to any incompatibilities.

As this article says, you *may* get away with a 300w PSU but that won't leave you for any future expansion.

Are you planning to game with this graphics card? I wouldn't expect decent framerates with it from most modern games.

As the article says:

The GT 710 costs less to buy than a single top-tier game, so if you can afford to buy games, you really should be able to budget for a faster card than this.

Building a PC with some used hardware. The mainboard is a BIOSTAR MB-8500 TUC-A Ver. 3, and the video card an S3 Vision 864. Installed FDD, HD, CD-ROM and W98SE with no problems. Started the PC the next day, and the screen was black. Tried different memory modules, no change. The power supply is working, the CPU fan is working, and the HD is spinning. Tried two other video cards, nothing shows up.

Any ideas on this one??

A:Dedicated video card won't work with anything

Just giving this thread a little bump. Also, I wanted to mention a few things.

The system tray app for the Nvidia card tells you when its actually being used. The only program I can get to use it is the Nvidia control panel itself under "Adjust Image Settings with Preview", which displays a rotating display of the Nvidia logo. Other than that, nada. I've tried rolling back the drivers on both the Nvidia and Intel but the Nvidia drivers don't do anything and the Intel drivers just give me a black screen when rolled back.

I understand that this also may simply be an issue with the optimus system itself?

I am looking for a reasonably priced video card that will run directx 9.0 and will run games like far cry on the higher settings as well as the new Thief game. Right now I have a Radeon 9000 and it will run the games but just on the lowest settings. I would like some recommendations. I really don't want to spend more than 225 and I want it to be able to play all the "next generation" games like doom3 and halflife2. A:How do i know what Video Card will work with my Computer?

That sounds like onboard graphics to me. We'll need your motherboard information to tell for sure. Or you could just google up what a PCI, AGP, and PCIe slots look like. You probably don't have to concern yourself with PCIe because your computer is too old. So just look at PCI and AGP. Then look at your motherboard to see what you have.

Typically PCI is white plastic, and AGP is brown. This isn't the case all the time, but most of the time it is. Another thing is you'll probably have 2 or more PCI slots, but you'll never have more than 1 AGP slot. AGP will also be located physically above the PCI on a motherboard.

So if you have AGP, then you can get any AGP card (provided your power supply can handle it). If you have PCI only then you are stuck to that, and your choices are fairly limited if you want to do any gaming. But this thread should help you out on that.

VisionTek Radeon 9200 256 MB graphics adapter PCI, i have an hp pavilion 7850, here is the motherboard specs link (
i looked further in the site and found out this about the video.
Video Graphics=PCI Local Bus
Controller=Intel 810E (on motherboard)
well will that video card work? and will pci express cards work as well?

A:I need to if this video card will work with my computer

From the looks of the link you gave, you can ONLY run a "PCI" card. That is NOT a "PCI-X" or "PCI-E". But just plain PCI. PCI-E is PCI Express, by the way.

That said, your 9200 PCI card should work fine. But if you want to play some better games like Half Life 2 or DOOM 3 or Battlefield 2, you'll need a better card, even if it is PCI.
At least jump up to the 9600 PCI if you can. Or a GeForce FX 5600 series.

Good luck!

I took out a video card and put a better one in and the system slow down by 10 folds and froze so I had to put the other video card back in. I think my mistake was I should of went to the Device Manager and deleted the driver for the display adapter then turn off the computer installed the new video card turned the computer back on and loaded the new drivers. Now do I need to go to control panel and under uninstall a program and deleted the display adapter from there also or just deleting it from the device manager good enough?

you should uninstall Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features
then turn your system off put the new card in after booting install the new drivers for the card.

Hello All,

AGP 4x/8x (with a latch) ? supports only 1.5V video cards. Right now I have a vgc that is 128mb and want to move up in the world. My question is this. If I get a new vgc that requires a power supply from the psu, will it still work on my motherboard. I know I will have to get a nEW psu seeing as my current one is low grade but I was wondering if my MoBo will even run a vgc that needs power from the psu. A:Will this video card work on my computer?

I don't think you provided the correct "Model #". This is a VAIO, correct?

It can not be determined what your PC can handle from this information. What we need is to know if your PC has a PCI-Express or AGP video slot. Since "64MB Intel Graphics Controller" is not a standard retail video card, I can not tell what kind of video source it is (onboard, PCI-E or AGP). If "onboard", it will need to be disabled in the BIOS in order to use a separate video card. If you are not comfortable with all this, take the computer to a tech.

A:new video card doesnt work :(

Having enough cables does not mean that you will have enough power, see if you can find the output on the psu itself. Then make a list of everything in your PC and use a PSU calculator to see if it has enough juice.

Dell have probably installed a PSU with just the right amount of power for the original spec.

Plugged into the AGP slot, swapped out the blue analog cable for the white digital cable, booted up, and the monitor never got past some testing message. Something about an analog signal test. A multi colored square continued to float across the monitor.
Shut everything down, and went back to the blue analog cable. Booted up and all went normally. The PC recognizes the card in device manager. But why can't I run it in digital mode? Thank you.

I have a pretty old computer, and since I may have it for another year or two, I decided to buy a graphics card for it so I could play games that aren't quite as old as the ones in my current collection. I bought a PowerColor 24PRO 256M PCI card, since it seems the best I can get for a computer like mine.

The problem I have is that after installing it and the drivers, it won't run because, "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)". I checked both in the Device Manager and in System Information for possible conflicts, nothing, the card seems to have I/O, IRQ, and Memory dedicated to it and not to other devices. Does anybody have any idea why there aren't enough free resources?

A:Video Card will not work, Error Code 12

I tried doing a clean install (for the third time or so). Uninstalled everything, ran Driver Cleaner, rebooted, ran driver cleaner again, disabled as many devices as I could spare (not many) and then rebooted again. I ran through the installation process, downloading the ATI drivers and such, rebooted, and the card still says it doesn't have enough resources.

Also, earlier I disabled VGASave because it showed as conflicting with the PCI-to-PCI connection which seemed related to the card. The reason I can see anything at all is the integrated Intel card. I had disabled that before, to see if it worked, and it didn't, so I turned it back on so I could try disabling VGASave.

Ok here goes I have recently got a second hand nVidia Geforce GT MB AGP video card yes it was tested at the shop I bought it from who the owner is also a friend and it worked anyway brought it home and searched up the drivers not card video my helping Drivers work to for it the way I did it was probably not very wize but I got version driver for the card anyway that worked fine and the card ran ok so I tried playing some games which previously were not very good because my old card was only MB so i opened up CS Source cracked addition but Drivers not helping my video card to work thats got nothing to do with it and went into the Drivers not helping my video card to work video Drivers not helping my video card to work settings and there as I d hoped it suggested I have most of the settings on high but when i tried to play the game it was all jumpy and the video card couldn t handle it so I put all the settings down to the lowest again and it ran ok I ges I went back to this guy to ask about this and he said its to do with not having the latest driver so he personally put it on a disc for me version and I installed that at home however when it finally loaded up windows Xp bit by the way the resolution was x and the colour was on bit and when I tried to change this the screen flicks for a second and stays as it is The only way to remedy this so far is to install the old driver I first downloaded and then I can change it how I like but my games are still depressingly lame because I cant play them to more potential Please help me with any suggestions nbsp

After my video card started acting up, I bought a new one. It's a slight upgrade but not much. Now the graphics look great but the sound card and modem aren't working. I went into system setup to make the system reconfigure for the new video card, but that didn't help. I'm running Windows 98 on a Dell Dimension. It's an older PC but it's for my kids. Don't need fancy graphics but do need internet access. Help!!

A:sound/modem don't work w/ new video card

Go to start/ control panel/ click the system icon. Go to device manager and find your modem and sound card. Click properties and update drivers. If windows cant find the drivers then go to and download the current driver. You will need to know what type modem and sound card you have.

Hey All,

Just trying to see if anybody had any suggestions or advice, I'm trying to complete this build and the only thing not working is the Graphics card. Specs Below:

Biostar H61 Motherboard
Kingston 8GB Ram
Kingston 2x64GB SSD (128GB Total)
Galaxy GTX 460 GC 768mb
Antec "Hardcore Gamer" Edition 400w PSU

Basically, I've installed every single Windows Update, Driver, and Bios Update.

I've tried installing my old 9600 GT and it did not detect that either.

I think it's the Motherboard or PSU.

Both Motherboard and PSU are new as is the GTX 460. The 9600GT was pulled working from a working system so I know thats not broken.

The 9600GT Required one 6-pin pci-express adapter.
The GTX 460 Required 2 6-pin pci-express adapter.

I'm not sure which one the problem is because everything is new and everything works aside from the Graphics Card not being detected.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

I think about building a new computer which will easily play any game and record it by Fraps or another program with maximum quality and resolution from a 30 inch monitor with a 2k display.

Shop assistant recommended me some computer configuration with;

1) Processor Intel Core i7 4.00GHz w/8MB Cache.

2) Video Card ASUS STRIX GTX 970 Directcu II OC GeForce GTX 970 4GB PCI-E w/Dual DVI HDMI DisplayPort.

Will the Processor and Video Card really work for such tasks?

To put this shortly, I had a Nvidia 8800 GTS and decided to upgrade to an ATI Radeon HD5870. When I put the HD5870 in the computer and try to turn the computer on my monitor wont recognize it (just goes to standby). However, everything in my tower is running (all the fans, even the HD5870 fan is running). I replugged the 8800 GTS and it worked again.

Computer Specs:
OS: Windows 7
Motherboard: p5n-e SLI
Power Supply: 800 Watts
Graphics Cards: Stated above
Ram: Kingston 4gigs

A:Just upgraded video card, now my monitor won't work

Did you remove the nVidia software and drivers first? You need to do that with the 8800GTS still installed, then shut down your computer, and install the new GPU, then reboot and download the new drivers for your card for and install them.

I presume you also have the power connectors fitted to the new GPU when running it as well?

Just got a new Asus P5PE-VM with a Core 2 Duo, and now only the onboard VGA works. When I put in my video card (EVGA GeForce 6800GT), the computer turns on still, but no matter which vga port I use (onboard or card) I get no display.

I am running Vista, but I don't think that would affect this. Bios is not the most recent, but the only update adds new CPU support.

Any ideas? My old mobo died, and I'm really hoping to keep this card...I love it! (not to mention can't spend the money for a new one).

Its a Planar PX212M monitor, the cost and where i found it and all that is not important. I mainly posted that just for a quick reference.

I'm wondering exactly how the monitor video card relation works. If I bought a 128 MB video card, would it have the same capability at a 256 MB video card for something like viewing images on the web? (no video games)

This is mainly a concern as far as dicom images for a hospital. We were told we needed 256 MB vid card, and then our IS department said that a 128 MB would do fine because that would max out the graphics for this monitor, so a 256 MB would be pointless.

I'm just wondering is that true or not. Are vid cards just needed mainly for games? And that's the big improvement you get from bigger and better vid cards?

Hello all, seeking some advice here.

I'm looking forward to upgrading my mother board but I live in Central America and getting these things is hard. The best I've been able to find is the Asus P5NSLI motherboard.

Now, if you go over to the board description over at the Asus website, it states that the graphics slot is built around nVidia technology. The problem is that I don't have a nVidia card but rather an ATI Radeon which I don't plan to upgrade for the moment. The guy at the computer shop that showed me the board assured me that my Radeon card would work with this board no problems, but I'm still doubtful.

My question is: will it work or no? Keep in mind I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to hardware.

Any help would be appreciated.

ASUS EAH6450 fits in ALL Models All Sizes EXCEPT USFF.

ASUS Silent cards fit in all models with X16 video slot. Meaning it doesnt fit USFF because USFF has Zero Slots. These cards fit and work in every dell I have ever tried.
