Unable to install important software

Q: Unable to install important software

I've been trying to install necessary business software on my office computer with no luck. When I initiate the "setup.exe" program it opens the program and hangs. All I see is the cursor turn into the hourglass and sit there. I can let this go on for an hour and nothing else happens. Immediately when I click anywhere on the screen "(not responding) appends itself to the titlebar at the top. I have to ctrl+alt+del to get out of it.

I've installed this same software flawlessly on six other computers here at work with no problems. I'm unsure what's wrong with this machine and would appreciate any help from anyone who might know where to start looking for a fix. I've ran HijackThis! and deleted everything unnecessary with the help of the "spyware" section of this site. Any other ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Some antivirus software falsely sees a few executables as a threat and will hang them up. You might have to turn off your antivirus if you are installing trusted software.

Hi,

I have several Updates that fail; 3 of which are classified as "Important." The updates get applied, I reboot, then after reaching 99%, I get the error message, "We would not complete your updates. Undoing changes."

KB2962409, 2967917, 2981580, and all versions for English Input Personalization Dictionary (e.g., 2881553) fail.

I connected with the Answer Desk and they told me to try the two-button reset (Volume Up + Power button) and then after reboot, try the updates again. Needless to say, I rolled my eyes, complied and, of course, it didn't work and I'm getting the same result.

The Answer Tech also told me that the 4 KBs I mentioned above will be pulled and replaced in a few days. I am skeptical but, regardless, I am still stuck with not being able to get those updates installed.

I'm running Windows 8.1 on a Surface Pro 2.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Here is the issue, any time I try to install HP printer software on a machine that does not have the boot volume set as the C:\ drive it fails. I have not been able to find a work around for this. I was just wondering if there was a way around this issue someone may know.
I have seen this issue several times. The first time I had to reinstall Windows XP. The second time the subst command allowed the install to briefly install before failing and having to uninstall itself.

Can anyone help?

My OS is Windows XP Pro, which normally gives me very few problems, those that have occurred; I have been able to fix myself. However, during a recent regular windows update, during which time my Internet Explorer six was upgraded to version eight. I discovered that some of my programmes (For example Paint Shop Pro and Acronis True Image) would not run, including IE eight.

Following instructions I removed IE8 and reinstalled IE6 which basically fixed the problem, the programmes that would not run previously still would not run, so I removed them to do a re-install, but could not do so.

I finally did a Safe Re-Install using my original installation cd, but the problem remains unchanged, but IE six is fine. My Event Viewer logs report no problems.

Please help…

I've always gotten this error when I try to install Adobe Reader, but I found a way around it...so I never paid it much heed.

But today I'm trying to install a piece of software for CD labelling, and I get this error...have no idea what it is, how to get around it, or how to fix it. It reads as follows:

1607: Unable to install Installshield Scripting Runtime
This happens during installation of the software while it prepares to install using InstallShield Wizard.

Anyone know how to fix it or get around it so I can finish installing this thing?

Hello..I am unable to install SQL Server 2000 and Adobe Photoshop on my computer..At first I thought this was an issue specifically for those software programs...but I have gone though all the troubleshooting for SQL Server specifically and photoshop as well. When I try to install from the CD I get to the exe's and double click them and nothing happens..it is like my computer does not recognize exe commands anymore. I have made sure my security settings will accept downloads and I dont have any anti-virus software running...any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated..thanks

Everytime I attempt to install any type of software, I receive the message
"16 bit Wndows Subsystem"
C:\Windows\system32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Chose 'Close" to terminate the application.
I've been using this computer for over a year and it just started displaying this message a few weeks ago. I don't understand what happened to cause a system file to get screwed up.

Hi all.

Im currently running Win 7 64bit O/S, new install so hopefully no viruses yet.

O/S working fine. I have tried to install several different pieces of software but i get an error message along the lines of 'unable to install, only win 7 programs will be installed'

I have checked and double checked that i have the correct software and tested it on another computer with same O/S, they work fine.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Can you post a screenshot of a failure error message on your system? You can use the snipping tool to capture the error message window if necessary.

I have a Compaq Armada 500 laptop with Windows '98. My techie at work says I have plenty of memory with which to work. I have tried to install the wireless (Linksys 54g) software twice. Each time, a window appears saying something about the iKernel.exe not found. After clicking OK, another window appears saying that " is not a valid integer. Linksys tech support reports it has never heard of that message, nor do they have an answer. They did suggest I go to Boingo.com and download new drivers. We did, it didn't work. My techie suggests I upgrade to XP. Any help out there?

Thanks,

A:Unable to install wireless software

Shutdown any antivirus and un-needed software first. Then try.. Also, you can try moving the files off the CD into a temp folder and installing from there as it could be a read error..

Otherwise, ikernel.exe is the Installshield scripting engine ... if you go here www.installshield.com and search their knowledge base for ikernel.exe you should find an article devoted to troubleshooting this error.

Also,

I am trying to find a way to install an older recipe software that my mom has been using for years, Key Home Gourmet for Windows (1994 Softkey International). She just replaced her computer which had Windows Vista with a new Dell which has Windows 7. She has over 500 recipes backed up on an external drive. I have tried using the compatibility wizards and other compatibility settings but keep getting the same message that "the version of this file is not compatible with the version of window you are running." There are no newer versions of this software. Is there any way to make this work?

A:Unable to install older software

It might work in XP Mode. Another method is DosBox. If it won't work at all in 64 bit it's probably a 16 bit app. DosBox may be your best bet.

Hi all I wonder if you guys can help me with something that's started happening fairly recently I'm running Windows x Home edition If NAS Unable drive Software to Install From it helps I have Gb of RAM and a TB HDD I don't think that information will make any difference but there you have it I also have a TB Western Digital MyBookWorld which I use as a remote storage tool for all of my documents I'm not running a business or anything I'm just paranoid about losing all of my stuff especially the genealogy research information that I've spent years collating Among other things I like to store software on there - nothing illegal just electronic copies of software that I own so that if I want to remove and reinstall it I can so Unable to Install Software From NAS drive without having to grab the physical versions from the loft About days ago I sat down with the intention of installing some software on my PC To let Unable to Install Software From NAS drive you understand I've had the machine about months but it's only Unable to Install Software From NAS drive now I've felt the inclination to install this piece of software So I accessed the folder on my NAS drive which has a static IP address and to which I can connect using a mapped drive with NO issues However when I try to install the software I get this error quot Cannot start setup - the setup file may be corrupt or you may have the wrong password If you downloaded this file please download a fresh copy If the file is password protected check your password and try again quot I get this error regardless of whether or not I opt to run the installer as the Administrator However I then retrieved the master disc from my loft and ran it without incident The folder on my NAS drive contains exactly the same subfolder structure and file contents as the master CD so I don't think it can be that I've tried copying the folder from the NAS drive to a location on my PC's HDD but get the same error Finally I've also tried to install the software onto my laptop a -year old Dell with much less memory HDD and an upgrade version of Windows rather than a fresh version and get the same result My PC is fully up to date with all Microsoft patches I've literally just checked this and I'm wondering if one of the cumulative updates released by Microsoft may have had a negative effect Has anyone seen this before And if so is there an easy fix

A:Unable to Install Software From NAS drive

Did you try copying the software from the other drive to your machine? Third Party security software can cause issues, along with a slow upload speed on the remote side and remote software being the issue.

If you can use WinSCP to connect to it, try that.

Hi Guys,

I'm using Windows XP SP2 and from past couple of weeks I'm unable to download or install new software. The download (ESPECIALLY the .exe files) stops at 99% regardless of the browser and the .exe files don't get installed. I used Malware Bytes to scan and remove any threats, still the problem persists. Kindly advise.

A:Unable to Download and Install new Software

My first suggestion would be to upgrade to SP3. You should not be running a system with SP2 due to the security risk of doing so. If you have restore points enabled you can try going back to a previous point before the issue happened.

Greetings,

I tried to install software for creative vision m 30gb mp3 player...

Creative software link: Creative Worldwide Support

I got an error as "windows operating system running on this system is not supported by this product".

System spec:
MS win xp
Home edition
version 2002
service pack 2

Also attached the screen shot of error an attachment.

Please advice...

A:Unable to install creative mp3 software

It took me a while to find that model on the Creative website, until I realised you missed out the word "Zen" -- it's actually a Zen Vision M 30GB.

All I can suggest is the software you're trying to install either requires Service Pack 3 (a free update from Microsoft), or you're trying to install a version made for Windows 7 perhaps.

I see there are several applications in the downloads section for the Zen Vision & you didn't say which of them is giving you that error, but the Creative website doesn't actually say specifically which Windows versions it's compatible with, so they are not much help.

There is a dedicated official forum for Creative users here which may prove helpful if you register & post your problem, but be sure to post which OS you're using & which specific Creative software application is producing the error message.

I would start over to get a perfect install following these same steps for Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

You'll get and keep a perfect install to the exact extent you stick with the tools and methods given in the tutorial.

Everything needed is in the tutorial.

A:Unable to install downloaded software

If i where you (witch iam not) i should reformat & reinstall windows .. something seriously f**ked up during your installation.

A question .. did you have the computer online during reinstall or was it unplugged ?
IF it wasn't unplugged , try unplug it & install antuvirus as soon as you are done installing windows.

Morning All,

Need some advise on why I am not able to install any Adobe software (reader and flash player) onto my Laptop and hopefully rectify the problem. I am running Windows XP Pro SP2.

I original had 9.5 in Adobe reader and did an update to 10.?? and I could never get 10.?? reader to open and read PDF's.

Last week I uninstalled the reader and flash player (as it was glitching too). But I have found that I am now unable to re-install any adobe software. As an example, I download the small *.exe file (install_flashplayer10x32_mssd_aih.exe) several times and it just wont install.

Any advise is appreciated.

Cheers,

A:Unable to install ANY adobe software into XP Pro SP2

It could be Adobe's much-criticised download manager plug-in (GetPlus) that's getting in the way of a successful installation, so downloading the offline installer for Flash Player may be more successful: Download Flash Player 10.1 Offline Installer

Likewise with Adobe Reader: Adobe Reader X Offline Installers

Download both offline installer files, then double-click to install each one in turn.

Edit: all download links checked and working.

I have an epson CX5800f printer. Recently, it stopped responding to printing commands. The printer spooler frequently shut itself off. Since then, I have uninstalled my drivers for the printer. However, now when I try installing any drivers, I get messages saying installation has failed.

I have checked to see if the printer itself is unable to print, and I have found that it still can. Maybe parts of the old driver are still in my computer?

Thanks for any help

A:Unable To Install Printer Software

Right click on "my computer" and click on "properties"
click on the "hardware" tab, then click on "device manager"

locate the printer, then rightclick on it and choose "uninstall".

Once the printer itself is gone, then go and uninstall the drivers

to do this:
Click start > settings > printers and faxes > file > server properties > drivers

locate the drivers you wish to uninstall (all of them if you don't have any other printers or programs that use print drivers) and click "remove".

Then reboot your computer and start from scratch.

Unable to install or update any software from all user accounts including Adminstrator on a XP Home system.

Just to give a little background, this is a notebook that my daughter is using in college. She got infected by a virus (unknown type) from an emal sent by her professor. I was too far to help and she took it to their on campus tech center. They were able to clean it out, but she is now unable to install anything. I suspect the technician took the drive out and installed it on a XP Pro system to clean out the virus(s). As a part of the process, he changed the privilleges of the administrator group. The tech center is closed for the summer and I am at a lost on what he did. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hiya helpers...
I've been having some strange problems lately. A lot of software that I need to install, won't install. Example is Nero Express I got with my new DVD drive.
I used blackvipers services page tips and tricks to increase my performance and all was well. Then, I bought a new computer, went to blackviper and it was offline... still offline a month later. I attempted to disable some services which I know I have no use for, and therefore, can't pinpoint why my software won't install. I usually have to Start windows installer as well, even tho I set it to automatic, it mysteriously ends up on Manual.
Any help would be great
Thanks in advance.

I should also mention Windows Updates will not install.

Hi all:
I am hoping someone could help me with this issue. I bought a brand new Compaq Presario A909US laptop yesterday and I am having trouble installing spybot, adware, and avg.
When the downloads are complete I get either one of two error messages:
'...is not a valid win32 application'
OR
'The set up files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the software.'
I have attempted to install these programs at least three times and still get the above messages.
Since the laptop is brand new, i doubt there is a virus on it.
here are the specs:
windows vista home premium
Intel (R) Pentium (R) Dual-CPU T2330 (1.60GHz)processor
2038MB
32 bit operting system
If someone could help me I would greatly appreciate it!

A:unable to install anti-virus software

I'd like to try to get a more detailed log from GMER rootkit scanner.

Let's try this version of gmer.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. Double click the exe file.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.
In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are unchecked IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

If you still have troubles, try running the scan in Safe Mode.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you still have troubles, run the scan with ONLY the Sections and C drive boxes ticked.

I first got an error message from from my anit-virus (Trend Micro) and said I should reinstall the program. I uninstalled then tried to reinstall and I get this error message: "unable to install the kernel drivers tmtdi.sys".

I tried to installing AVG free 8 and it wont install.

I ran Windows Defender, Combo fix & Malwarebytes. It still did not fix the problem.

I've searched around on the internet and not sure if I should try anything else or if I am making the problem worse. I dont want to format my computer if possible.

Thanks in advance.

A:Unable to Install Software on Windows 7 Domain PC

Try this:

Hold shift and right click on the installers for your programs. When the menu comes up, select "Run as a different user..." and then enter your Network admin credentials. Hopefully that helps and allows you to install what you need to install.

If the local admin credentials are locked out, that will be a problem for a lot of things, though. You may want to consider wiping the computers and starting over with your own admin credentials.

I'd malware on my pc and had to refresh it. But now, I'm unable to install Intel software.

My pc version: Asus TP 500LN.
Antivirus: Bitdefender free

For example: Asus Intel Management Engine Interface, Intel® Serial IO I2C Host Controller, etc.

Why am I installing these drivers? Easy , just look in the attached file.

These are some of the hardware ids:
ACPI\VEN_INT&DEV_3437&REV_0003
ACPI\VEN_INT&DEV_3432&REV_0003
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_9CBA&SUBSYS_19DD1043&REV_03

I tried disabling antivirus, installing Asus versions(and then switching to Intel versions), running as admin, disabling Microsoft services in msconfig, etc. I even tried installing the older versions I had but they don't seem to work anymore.

A:After refreshing pc, unable to install Intel software

Hi,

Did you use the refresh feature that exist on Windows 8.1 or you install fresh?

Make sure you install the Chipset first

Hi. I think I may have a Virus on my computer or some corrupted files. It is behavingly very sluggishly and has started logging me in to a temporary profile, my desktop is different, even though I still sign in to my administrator account at startup. In addition to this, whenever I try to install new software, at the end of the installation I am greeted with an error 1450 saying it couldn't write to a registry "insuficient system resources exist).
I ran malwarebytes with a full scan and it did pick up around 70 objects and PUP's which i removed. But it is still logging me in on the temporary profile, and not allowing installs.
Please help!
(EDIT - I am running windows 7 64 bit intel corei7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20ghz  2.20GHz, 16GB ram)

Go to search type device manager.
In manager look for CD/DVD drives
In CD drives look for yellow warning markers, if found the driver is corruprt, replace. If no yellow marker, the driver is probably not the most up to date, upade.

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer. I am The Dark Knight and will be assisting you. Please ask questions if anything is unclear.  Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com).There are 3 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin. You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.rkill.exerkill.comrkill.scrIt is possible that the infection you are trying to remove will not allow you to download files on the infected computer. If this is the case, then you will need to download the files requested on another computer and then transfer them to the Desktop of the infected computer. You can transfer the files via a CD/DVD, external drive, or USB flash drive. Before proceeding any further the processes that belong to Windows Recovery need to be terminated so that it does not interfere with the cleaning procedure.Double-click on the RKill.exe icon in order to automatically attempt to stop any processes associated with Windows Recovery and other Rogue programs.===Please do not reboot your computer.  Now, please follow these instructions to run ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links and instructions for running this tool:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix (CF).Please go here to see a list of programs that need to be disabled.**Note: Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.****Note 2: If you get a message saying "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion", please restart your computer.**Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Hy, I recently uninstalled PowerDVD 12 Ultra using Revo Uninstaller.

Now when I try to reinstall the software the installer says:

But if i click "yes" the window closes and nothing happens, same for "no".

The program does not appear in windows uninstaller, nor in the registry for windows uninstall (see pic)
Now I've tried system restore, doesn't work, it says a file is missing (yes, i did close all antivirus programs)
Any advice?

Hi there Although I'm not computer illiterate for some reason I just cannot get to grips with my laptop at the moment and since having my son I don't have the same time I had previously to learn The first issue that I noticed was when I turned on the laptop an error message came up about MSE and how a file was missing and possibly the access was denied or something I ignored it at first but then I tried to install a few programs and nothing is installing fully To be a bit more specific if all that is too vague What I'm really trying to install at the moment is just the software for my new keyboard When I attempt to install the software it seems to complete As soon as I click quot finish quot however it comes up with device manager software install Please working. help! Unable and gone/not to the error message that I have attached as a screen grab If it helps point towards the problem I just went to change my desktop picture I figured you guys might end up seeing my desktop via screengrabs etc so thought I'd change it to something cool Right clicked on desktop click quot personalise quot nothing happened Right click-Screenresolution - error message and then both of which I have also attached I think I must be missing some important system files I'd really appreciate it if there is a way to repair my system without formatting everything I'm not able to back anything up where I am at the moment and honestly if the only way is to delete everything I'll probably rather leave it broken and have to wait till I can afford a new laptop Anyway thanks for reading Anything you need from me let me know Lucy

A:Unable to install software and device manager gone/not working. Please help!

exactly what laptop? what keyboard? normally you should not have to install any type of software for the keyboard. It should have worked when you plug it in.

someone else here may have a better solution but what I would do is to
1. do a system restore to a restore point just prior to all the problems.
2. make sure windows is completely uptodate by manually updating windows.
3. uninstall and reinstall msie.
4. plug in the keyboard and see if it will work without the software installation.
5. then try to personalized the background.

after the 2nd step, order does not matter.

Until recently I had AVG Anti-Virus 2013 Free Edition on my PC. I un-installed it because it started to cause problems. I thought that the software was corrupted in some way. I down-loaded and installed it again and everything seemed to go ok with the installation until near the end. Then I got a blue screen saying with one of the installation files : avgidsdriverx.sys. My PC stopped working and I had to re-boot it. It re-booted fine except the was no anti-virus software. It seems that I can't install this software. Anyone help me with this problem?

A:[SOLVED] Unable to install anti-virus software.

Boot up into Safe Mode with Networking and run the applicable AVG uninstaller from AVG | Download tools and utilities and then after the reboot, reboot back into Safe Mode with Networking (as a safeguard) and try the reinstall - but from various posts, I don't think that AVG is as good as it used to be and perhaps a perusal of these two articles may give you a better option.

In have Window XP, Norton anti virus with Norton Firewall, and Weebroot SpySweeper (the paid version) installed. Webroot keeps asking me to install the new version. When I try to do so, everything goes fine for the installation and all... but then, I receive this window from Norton (see attached file) and then the PC freezes up and I have to do a cold boot to get it going again. I am still getting the updates from Webroot and the version that I have seems to be working fine. I even tried to install it when Norton was closed off but I had the same problem. I also have to do a system restore to get Webroot to work again after trying to install the new version. Any suggestion?

Hello everyone, this is surojit, from india. Please help me to solve my problem with my win 7 pc. I'm using a 64bit ultimate version. Now, whenever i try to install any pc game or software, like cpuz or even firefox, i keep getting the error that the ' set up files are corrupted, please obtain a new copy of the programme...' . This is happening with few games/software which i installed before also, so i assume that the setup files are,as said by the pc, not corrupted. Please help to solve this problem. I did a fresh installation of the os yesterday, but still the problem is same as ever.thanking you all for reading this.

A:Unable to install any software, like cpuz, orany pc game

Re Download The Program From Other Location or Website

This could be some times because of the setup file you have downloaded does not seem to be verified to run in windows or they might be actually corrupted because of the server from which you downloaded these files, so if you download the same program from some other location or website or in some other form this will work for you in most of the cases.

Clean Up Temporary Files in Windows and Re Run The Setup File

As reported by some users, they were able to fix this by cleaning the temporary files in windows. You can do this simply by using a windows temporary files cleaning program and once you delete the temporary files you can try running the setup file again after restarting your computer, it should run fine without any issue this time if the setup files are not actually corrupted.

Establish a Clean Boot

Try downloading using Safe Mode with Networking

Hope this helps.

Windows 7 - In Devices and Printers, there is a yellow alert symbol on my Laptop icon. Clicking on the icon told me to
"troubleshoot". Troubleshooting informed "There is a problem with the driver for Lexmark X 422. Reinstalling the driver might fix this problem", and "troubleshooting" attempted to Reinstall the device driver.
It failed with a notification "Device driver software was not successfully installed". I looked in Device Manager to try to update the driver manually but  Lexmark X422 is not in the list of devices! Looking in Devices and Printers
I found the yellow alert symbol on my Laptop icon is also missing. What action should I take?

Hey there everyone I've got a tough question for the community today I've been trying for a while now to get my Lenovo N 's AuthenTec AES fingerprint scanner to work with Windows for logging in and all the other exciting things you can do with that feature After installing countless drivers and softwares I still haven't got it figured out and I've now got myself a half installed copy of AuthenTec TrueSuite From what I can tell there isn't anything left of the software except the uninstaller and the fact that Windows points a shortcut to it under install fragmented Authentec TrueSuite software to Unable the Biometric Settings If I try to uninstall it Unable to install fragmented Authentec TrueSuite software with the provided uninstaller the progress bar gets about of the way through and an error box pops up reporting that it quot Fail to get install directory or system directory quot in those words After you click quot ok quot the uninstaller exits and has no effect I have tried going at it from the stock Windows quot add n remove programs quot page CCleaner's software removal and quot PC Decrapifier quot which was recommended to me by somebody on the Lenovo community forums Is there any other way to Unable to install fragmented Authentec TrueSuite software uninstall this other than Unable to install fragmented Authentec TrueSuite software a new installation of Windows which I'd rather not do at this point Thanks - Bunny

A:Unable to install fragmented Authentec TrueSuite software

Try a System Restore to a date prior to installing the Lenovo fingerprint scanner.

Or maybe reinstall it as completely as you can and then use Revo Uninstaller to uninstall it.

I'd try System Restore first.

A:Help please.. possible virus/spyware/malware unable to install antivirus software

Hi scottietwenty3 and welcome to TSF

Delete your copy of the setup file and download a fresh copy from http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download-d. Disable the following programs before running setup and then let me know how that goes.

Disable SpywareGuardRight Click the running icon of Spywareguard to open the program.
Then go to Menu, File, Exit.
Confirm the program is closed.

Disable Windows Defender
Launch Windows Defender, right click on the System Tray icon, select Open.
Click on Tools>Options.
Scroll down and uncheck "Use real-time protection (recommended)".
Scroll down further, and uncheck "Use Windows Defender"
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button, approve the UAC prompt, and close Windows Defender.

I have been having an issue as of late with more than one program where the installer acts like it cannot access or cannot find the very files it just downloaded to install.  At first I only saw this with a game I was grabbing for my sister, no big issue, but I've been seeing it hit a few more programs over time, including Adobe Reader's updater and Skype's as well.  For some direct text the exact error I get from Adobe is:
"System cannot find the file specified.  Error: 2."
And the error from Skype is:
"Installing Skype failed; code 2.  The system cannot find the file specified."

Any and all help is appreciated, please and thank you.

Well, Vista is not my forte, but I do use it, so I'll try.

Please give more information about your customer's setup. I know you are short of time, but difficult to advise without more info. I haven't had any trouble installing s/w.

It shouldn't be necessary ordinarily to go through all that rigmarole in the Microsoft article, just to install software. Is your user logged in as a local administrator (as opposed to a standard user)? - that should suffice. If you can say:

Which edition of Vista is he running?

He must have a local administrator account set up on his machine - I understand that is done by default when installing. Is he using it?

What software is he trying to install?

And what do you mean by "no control over PC"?

Sorry not to be more help without the details. But a local administrator (User Accounts) should be able to install software.

My brother has a IBM ThinkPad T40 with Windows XP and a Linksys WPC54G Ver. 2 Notebook Adapter to connect wirelessly. After updating windows and installing Norton Internet Security 2011 he is having a problem connecting to the internet wirelessly. The status says: "Validating Identity" and never changes. This happens at my house and at his house with different routers.

Try scanning your computer for viruses, I suggest a boot-scan then see if you can connect after.

Hi, I'm having a major virus/malware issue as my McAfee firewall protection stopped working suddenly. Called McAfee to reinstall the virus software and they were unable to install it. They said that since my Windows Update feature is not working (there is a big red X and updates are not downloading and installing) the McAfee installation is failing. Asked me to fix this issue first and then try McAfee installation.

Not sure what to do, any adivse? thanks.

A:Unable to install McAfee Virus software due to Windows Update error

You say your Windows Update is not working, yes? Try this Windows Update - Reset then try reinstalling McAfee. And it might not hurt to do this SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Truecrypt 7.1a should be fine to use and can be downloaded here - https://truecrypt.ch/

This site/developers has basically taken over the development of Truecrypt.

My friend is not very technically literate, but she uses email and the internet constantly at home. She is setting up a computer at home with DSL, etc, and another friend told her that she really needed to get firewall software for her home machine.

Considering that a firewall software would be one more application that she would have to contend with, I am inclined to tell her to just use the firewall that comes with XP Pro. What are your thoughts? Do you think she should buy firewall software in addition to what XP has built-in?

I have also considered setting up Zone Alarm Free for her at first, just so she can see what a firewall does. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

ZoneAlarm free is awesome. That should do, and don't forget SpywareBlaster, and SpywareGuard.

A:SFC unable to fix corrupt files-- are these important?

The last two listed appear to be Brother printer drivers...the WMI Core is a basic part of Windows.

If the files are damaged...the typical thing to do is to remove them and replace them undamaged copies.

I would try uninstalling the printer drives...then reinstalling same.  They may be creating the problem with WMI.

If files are damaged...what's the point of allowing them to remain in the system, causing problems?

hi i have just formatted my hard drive several times and scared to loose the life of my hard disk so some one suggested to me to use hard disk monitoring software so i downloaded any one from and used to see the life of HDD and it showed everything fine and more surprisingly it showed the "estimated life" too. so i wanted to know that the info shown by the software is true ? to what level ? like it showing health, temperature, surface test.etc

so what info may be correct and what is just a hypothetical? if any hard disk monitoring software is there which gives me the real information of HDD then please suggest cause i am ready to purchase....

regards to helping hands

A:important! questions on authencity of various HDD monitor software?

posting the name of the software would be useful.

My personal experience, is that HDDs don't have an "estimated" life. They can run for 5+ years nonstop or fail after one week. And when they fail, they can do it with little notice. Even same brand.
Normal quality ones should generally outlast the device they are in. A little percentage fails though.

The only way is to make backups of your important data, and if you can, image the system disk regularly, so if the HDD fails you can write that image on a new disk and keep living.

Now this is just a guess that may save you a full re-install.
Install a CD/DVD burning program and it may correct the fault. Also Windows builtin burning is not the cleverest of tools.

A:Cannot Install 'Important' Security Update

I have no idea what may be causing your problem, but you could try getting the update from the Windows Catalog site and see what happens; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323166/en-us

If this works, you will be able to download an .exe file which you just doubleclick on to install. Be sure to read the instructions before using this method.

Alternatively, you could check your Add/Remove list first, just in case the update is already there, or you could run the Secunia Online Inspector, which will confirm whether or not the patch is missing. You will need an up to date version of Sun Java before the Inspector will run; http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/

ther are still 88 important updates that needs to be installed on the 2 windows 8 pc 's i have in the internet shop.

how serious is this to the security of the 2 pc's ??

will this greatly affect the virus and malware vulnerability ??

thank you

all machines windows 8 64bit

A:88 important updates cannot install windows 8 how serious

Important enough I would say, if you are concerned about too many updates or have other concerns, you can pick and choose only security updates. Other way would be to have only important chosen to download and install. There are also some updates without which you will not be able to upgrade to W8.1. As computers are used in the internet shop, it's even more important to take advantage of any security improvement you can get your hands on.
I suppose you have set tight security on them and network, route etc. You can also ad: MCShield ::Anti-Malware Tool:: to guard against malware thru USB sticks if you allow customers to use them. Which other security measures have you taken ? AVs, soft/hard firewalls etc. ?

I have read many posts about problems due to the fact that after the installation of MS Updates the computer began to freeze, BSOD or just work slowly. The most usual cause is the fact that the updates are downloaded and installed at the same time. Many of these updates require restarting the computer. This fact causes conflicts and problems when the updates are not installed properly. Next week a large number of updates are expected, change your update settings to notify, only. Install manually, and one at a time. We rather you come to the forum giving help rather than seeking it.

I'm planning on doing clean install of Windows 10 for my PC this weekend. Currently I'm also using W10. I am going to install onto the same hard drive (SSD) as it is currently installed. It will put the older version of W10 into a Windows.old folder which I'm going to back it up to an external hard drive if I ever going to need files from it. Now after that I'll launch a Disk Clean-up to remove previous Windows installations (aka Windows.old) and then I'll remove the older version of W10 from dual boot (if it will be there ofcourse). My question is: are my previously mentioned steps enough to uninstall my older version of W10 and replace it with the new one or will I still have to do something?

Windows will not "uninstall" itself. A clean install will wipe everything from the HDD so be sure to have copied anything you don't want to lose to a different drive. You may also need to save the drivers for devices if you installed any hardware after the initial install of Win10, may have them in the Downloads Folder, that's where mine are.

A:lost important data after Re-install xp pro

I don't want to say your friend gave you bad advice, but reinstalling Windows that way causes problems as you are now finding out. Basically, I believe you are probably going to have to reinstall all your applications and drivers. You may be able to reinstall many of the drivers by pointing the wizard to c:\windows\system32 but you are probably better off just using your Dell Resource CD if you still have it.

You can open Outlook just fine still?

Hello everyone,

Each time that there are some new updates, windows prompt me to install service Pack 3.

Is it important to install it? What difference does it make?

A:Is it important to install Windows Service Pack 3?

Yes, Service Pack 3 contains important security and performance updates.

PRIOR to installing Service Pack 3 ensure that:
- you are not infected with malware
- that your drivers have been updated.
