My Computer is rejecting Windows Updates

Q: My Computer is rejecting Windows Updates

Hi guys. I have an HP Pavillion G Series computer that runs on the Windows 7 Home Vista operating system. What happened was I deleted a few programs from my laptop which included the Microsoft Security Essentials as it was conflicting with my Norton Antivirus Software. As a result; when windows updates come on; the laptop will attempt to install them then at 30per cent it will reject the updates and announce that the laptop is reversing the changes. My computer has become slow; the windows drivers are out of date and even downloading Adobe has become a chore!

Help me out guys what can I do before I fork hundreds of pounds for something I can potetially get sorted myself

Thanks in advance

Preferred Solution: My Computer is rejecting Windows Updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yeah, this one is tough. To get MS Updates running correctly, I found this solution to be helpful

Hi,

I'm not exactly a computer genius, and even Windows 8 is kind of new to me, but when they offered the update to 8.1 for free, of course I wanted it. When I update, everything seems to work fine until everything is complete, then it takes me to a flat blue screen that says nothing with no options to do anything. I've sat on that screen for an hour and a half. If I manually restart the computer, it automatically restores back to Windows 8. I've tried this three times.

Anyone have any idea?

The computer is an ASUS laptop and DOES have quite a bit of programs on there. It also has some adware or something that messes with my Mozilla browser that I somehow can't get rid of with even a rootkit, so if that problem has an easy fix I'd be up to hearing that answer, too. :D

Please help and thank you very much in advance.

A:My computer seems to be rejecting Windows 8.1 free update?

Have you checked for update drivers, which need to be installed before the Windows 8.1 update.

I was wondering if anyone has encountered this problem with Windows 10. I'm trying to edit .cfg files in notepad & notepad++ but every time I click "save" Windows tells me that I don't have permission or that the program is already open and cannot be saved.

I wasn't getting this issue until a recent update. How can I fix this?

I recently set a password for my computer I locked my computer and typed it in so I know for a fact that its right But when I started my PC this morning correct 7 rejecting password. Windows suddenly it automatically brings me Windows 7 suddenly rejecting correct password. to a screen saying 'User name and password is incorrect' I press OK and re-enter my password WHICH IS CORRECT it says Windows 7 suddenly rejecting correct password. it's wrong So when my computer is starting up I pressed F and went into System repair It brings me to a screen to enter a password I type the EXACT same password as before and it lets me in I am trying to log into my user account 'Tyquan' when my PC starts up AND on the system repair I only have one account which is administrator I never set a password when configuring my windows for the first time and even if I did it would be one of passwords I tried them all and all stupid variations of them that they could be I'm just confused as to why my computer is rejecting my password in one screen but accepting it in another

A:Windows 7 suddenly rejecting correct password.

Hello Tyquann, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you set Windows to automatically sign in to the user account that you changed the password for, then that could be the issue. Netplwiz will still use your old password unless you updated it in netplwiz by starting over and setting it up again below.

Log On Automatically at Startup

Hope this helps,

Hi

I bought an Ipod Nano yesterday but when I tried to load the hardware into my laptop, a warning message appeared advising me not to proceed as the hardware had not passed the "logo" test. Further, that if I loaded the Ipod hardware it could seriously affect the operational system on the computer either immediately or in the future.

I was compelled to return the Ipod but I am certain that there is some way that can solve this issue.

Or do I have to upgrade my system to Vista? Surely Apple has encountered this problem from other people who've purchased an Ipod only to be told not to laod it onto their computers for the reason outlined above.

Please, can someone help?

Jane

A:Windows XP rejecting loading of Ipod hardware

hm. Is that the exact error message? Is this right when you plug in the Ipod? When you plug it in, can you browse to it through 'my computer' ?

You won't have to update to Vista.

I had windows 8.1 and updating to 10 failed so badly I needed to operate a complete reinstall of windows. However, I could not get the upgrade to work, so I had installed windows 10 and attempted to activate using the 8.1 key. This hasn't worked. How do I get windows to accept the installation on the 8.1 key?

I have bought a new hard drive, a maxtor 80gb(ata) and went to connect it to my pc. Removed its jumper to make him slave, inserted the data and electric cable in it sockets but the pc its shuting himself down after 1 second i start him up. I tried to start the pc with just this new hard drive(no old one or dvd-rom/floppy) but same thing occured. I can use the pc if new hard drive is removed, my primary hard drive is a 80gb western digital(ata).
Any suggestions? Thank you in advance

A:PC rejecting ATA hard drive

You don't remove the jumper to make it a slave drive. You reset the jumper to the slave position. You have three choices: Master, slave and cable select.

I don't have you printer. Something that has worked for me in the past is to leave the printer off - get on the Internet and than turn the printer on. It will search on it's own looking for the right driver. Give it time to work. ----- Another way I've used is -
Open Device and Printer in the Control Panel - Right click the printer Icon - Trouble Shoot. (If you have this Icon their) ---------- Maybe go back to Office 2007 if that's what works ?

I just reset/refreshed my HP Pavilion Mini (again) and it's failing to accept re-installation of my Kaspersky Pro antivirus and net security. I have been forced to re-install several times in the past 18 months, but there was never a problem before. I'm
getting an error message saying program can not access internet. I've reinstalled Chrome and have logged into my Youtube, so the problem is not net availability, it's Kaspersky not being allowed traffic in or out, I presume. Not sure what to do, I already
uninstalled McAffee so there's not conflict between antivirus programs.
I will be grateful for any advice.

I turned my computer on this morning (XPS M1330), it started updating automatically with updates and then would not accept my password. It gives the error message, " the user profile service failed the login." I do not have any software so I can reset the password, as I bought the computer from my brother about 2 years ago. What can I do? It doesn't seem right that the computer did these updates and is now rejecting my password with no solutions on how to change it beyond having the software.any help would be appreciated - thank you!

A:Dell laptop rejecting my password

If the user profile fails to load, the SAM won't load the password.  When this happens, there's a very good chance a failing hard drive is at fault.
Power the system up, press F12 a couple of times and boot to the Dell diagnostics.  Run the tests, and then boot to the full 32-bit diagnostics and run an extended hard drive test - you will likely find the drive has developed bad sectors where the user profile is stored, in which case you'll need a new, 2.5" 7 or 9.5 mm SATA notebook hard drive.

I am trying to assign my printer the same IP address using DHCP reservation. It should be simple. Under dynamic clients I choose the printer (an HP8500) and choose reserve.
It automatically fills in the Add DHCP reservation fields with the dat. When I try to save it, it gives me an invalid MAC address error. The data was filled in automatically and matches the MAC address on the computer. Why is this being rejected?

A:D-Link DIR-825 rejecting DHCP reservation

Hmm; try doing it manually. I've see the field for the MAC address of the target device look like just a text box
and one is tempted to enter the characters one after the other without formatting.
a MAC address does have delimiters however, aka like aa:bb:cc:dd:ee

try using the ':' between the pairs

I implement Point of Sale systems. Currently our POS network may have a mix of Windows platforms, mostly 7 Pro and 8.1. Windows updates need to be installed, but we handle this process manually, with the setting "download updates but let me choose
when to install them". I'm looking for a way that our clients can sit down periodically on the main computer and install updates (during non-business hours), and also push them out to the other computers in the workgroup (which may be on a different OS).
Is this possible?

HP printers start rejecting budget ink cartridges - BBC News

Large numbers of HP printer owners found their printers stopped recognising unofficial printer ink cartridges on 13 September.
Dutch printer ink vendor 123inkt said it had received more than 1,000 complaints in one day.
HP said that during its last firmware update, settings had been changed so HP printers would communicate with only HP-chipped cartridges.

Hi everyone,

I have a MP3 player and Camcorder but I can't seem to get audio in or out of MP3 player and unable to download images off of camcorder.

On the camcorder front via recommended Firewire lead ..Windows movie maker recognises the model number but the little screen stays black and controls just seize ..it won't even allow me to shut the window.

On the MP3 front.. drivers loaded even a pic of player by below the D drive ..but when I try to access player to download files ..it seizes up.

Are both these problems related ..is there an application guard on this PC that needs turning off.??

Also I have a USB storage device I took to my Mums to copy some photos ..that won't work either...I have to make CD's everytime.

Thanks for reading any help is truly appreciated.

For you guys on the other side of the world - Telstra is our telco, 51% owned by the government and there is a lot of debate at the moment about selling it ........last election the government got a majority of seats in our parliament (something not achieved very often in this country) so now the PM is looking at selling it out-rite and the opposition is up in arms but can't do jack about it.

Thing is every time it restarts nothing is downloaded and it just does it all over again like 15 minutes later.

The Update it says its going to install is this
Upgrade to Windows 10 Home, version 1511, 10586

That's all it says and i am all ready in Windows 10, this has also caused the "schedule time for restart" to be grayed out. My PC has restarted like 5 times in the past 5 hours. What the heck is going on? I.E. it restarts at 9am then does it again at like 10am then 11am always putting the new time in the schedule for a restart.

And this: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If all else fails, download and install each remaining update manually. Several months ago, I had one W7 patch that would extract its files and then could not find them??? I had to point the installer to the files that it said it could not find 3 times during the install.

I have tried lots of time to download windows updates when I go to the updates page all I get is Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software Depending on your connection speed this might take a minute During this time you may receive one or more security warnings Review each security warning to ensure that the content is signed by Microsoft and then click Install or Yes to install the software and that is where it stops It will not go any further Page updates computer will Windows to download not says done I have let is sit for hours and still nothing When I Windows updates will not download to computer go to Control Panel and click on Windows Firewall the message I get is Due to Windows updates will not download to computer an unidentified problem Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings I am not sure if this is part of the problem or not I have recently done a Compaq System Recovery but not a destructive recovery just to restore the original files that were loaded when machine was new Since then I Windows updates will not download to computer have not been able to download windows updates Everything else seems to work fine If anyone has any answers I would be very grateful My computer is Compaq Presario P T S T OEM running window XP gigahertz Intel Pentium kilobyte memory on a cable modem nbsp

I'm fairly tech savvy but this problem is bugging me.

Anytime windows updates, it's supposed to turn off, then turn back on to finish.

Well anytime it turns off, it won't turn back on. The last time it did this, it corrupted the BCD.

The computer shuts down ok via the menu, and will start back up when I power it on, but if I hit restart, it just shuts off, and won't come back on unless the power button is pressed.

Someone said bad mobo, but I wanted to be sure.

meh

It seems ok.

Likely a bios setting that you can change. I've seen it before and even knowing a bios change could fix it, I am not bothered to see about it. If you are, check on power settings there.

Any Clue?
Is Windows XP Service Pack3 Affecting it?

A:New Computer Slowed After Windows Updates.

If your computer seems to be slow, read Slow Computer/Browser? Check here first; it may not be malware. There are reasons for slowness besides malware - i.e. disk fragmentation, disk errors, corrupt system files, too many startup programs, unnecessary services running, not enough RAM, dirty hardware components, etc. As your system gets older it becomes filled with more files/programs and has a natural tendency to slow down so cleaning and regular maintenance is essential.

I have just had the new Windows updates installed on my computer and I am not sure they are the correct updates for my Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit.

I also had the issue where my computer was still on at the time the the updates were installed. Does this cause any harm to the computer.

I also have attached the file where I found the CBS logs file - am I effectively part of a Homegroup or can you not tell by my attachment?

I just wish to ensure that the updates that have the extension x86 are the correct updates for my computer.

Thank you and I hope that I provided the correct information

A:Windows Updates & Slow Computer

If you go to Windows Update and select Custom instead of Express, it will allow you to download almost every Update at one time.
Go to the Task Manger and select Performance. Monitor this tab to see which process may be hoarding your System Resources.
You can also check the Event Viewer to see if there are Conflicts or Error messages. The Event Viewer is located in the Administrative Tools.

Ran Windows Updates yesterday morning It created several software problems via Flash Player conflict so I decided to do a system restore from the restore point created just before I think the updates were installed Big mistake When the computer rebooted there was an error message from boot manager saying 'the boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible' I booted from the Windows install disc and ran the startup repair It says it 'can't fix the problem automatically' Tried these solutions I found on various web sites Ran bootrec fixboot with command prompt said it was successful Didn't help Tried to reboot with what I believe is the recovery drive I'm no computer expert and got this error message The selected updates won't boot 7 Computer Windows after entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt - windows system winload Computer won't boot after Windows 7 updates exe Went into diskpart via command prompt to make sure all four hard drives are active--it says all are 'healthy' Noticed after rebooting Computer won't boot after Windows 7 updates from the install disc that the C drive with Windows on is now the F drive and one Computer won't boot after Windows 7 updates of the other internal hard drives formerly F is now C I used command prompts to rename them correctly tried to reboot no change Upon rebooting from the install disc the letters are incorrect again Not sure this makes any difference but does seem weird When I looked at the problem log from the unsuccessful startup repair it mentioned an external device Trying anything I disconnected the external hard drive and ran startup repair again This time it said it could find no problem so I rebooted No change Booted from install disk again and tried startup repair again and it once again said it couldn't fix the problem automatically I immediately ran it again just out of curiosity and this time it said it could find no problem Tried to reboot no change Gave up and attempted to re-install Windows but shortly after starting it said the Windows disc was running and I needed to restart the computer normally then try to re-install I'm getting desperate I make my living at home via this computer and have already lost a day and would greatly appreciate any help

A:Computer won't boot after Windows 7 updates

System manufacturer and model?

I suspect...that you have damaged your system files or NTFS beyond the point of repair using Win 7 tools...or you have a hardware problem (hard drive).  My experience with using the Win 7 startup repair tool is that it either works or doesn't work...when it doesn't work, I clean install.

But others here have more experience/knowledge, so let's see what others may contribute.

Here's the issue. I had Windows7 reinstalled on my computer(Compaq presario CQ62) after a hard disk failure. Before I started installing the updates my computer functioned much faster. Now it takes forever for it to shut down. Is there a folder somewhere in W7 that stores all these old updates that I can clear out? Is there another way to speed it up? BTW I have a registry cleaner, anti-virus and defrag whenever necessary.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone may be able to give.

A:Are Windows Updates slowing down my computer?

It is actually more recommended that you have the windows updates. Make sure you get installed all of the IMPORTANT windows updates because some are even your drivers.

I was given an HP desktop running VISTA bit to sort out The computer would just continually restart and often lose the CMOS date warning of unexpected failures ask to enter startup restore etc I changed to a fresh battery twice to eliminate that as a cause Sorry I am not near Boinks Windows Updates Computer the box at the moment to identify the particular hardware Sp etc After running a variety of antivirus scanners reg cleaners etc I decided to call it a day and resorted to recreating the windows partition I experimented with two separate hard drives One I reformatted and recreated from discs the other was original to the box and I used the restore discs as well Here is where I am stumped With either of the hard drives everything is fine and dandy with the rebuild I can access the internet wireless works turn the computer on and off unplug the power to the box the CMOS Windows Updates Boinks Computer date remains accurate UNTIL I allow Windows Automatic Update to install it s updates when I go to shut down It appears that one or more of the updates is producing the conflict Windows Updates Boinks Computer How do I go about sorting out which of these updates is boinking the box Installing updates one by one to determine the culprit is more than my patience can handle For the time being I have turned off automatic updates and all is fine on one of the hard drives and the other drive disconnected sits with the updates but in the damaged mode of shutting down and warnings So I have a way to compare and evaluate potential fixes by swapping in the quot updated quot drive if I can determine which of the updates is the culprit Any thoughts appreciated

A:Windows Updates Boinks Computer

How do you have the update options set in the Control Panel? As you can see in the picture below you have options under the Important updates for installing your updates. The second option "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them" will give you the option to install the updates one at a time. Install the updates until you find the one which is causing this problem.

Whenever I get a message that Windows 8.1 needs to restart to install some updates, I select the restart button on the message. The computer shuts down to restart. As it restarts a screen come up telling me that the computer is installing the updates, and telling me not shut it down until that installation process is completed. It then shows me a percentage of the process completed. It gets to 9% and then hangs there. The computer goes through another restart and the same thing happens again. It may do this one or two more times before I get a screen that says that the installed changes can't be completed, that the changes are being undone so that the computer can restart normally.

Once the computer restarts to Windows 8.1, I go into the system and looks for the updates and they all look like they did , in fact, install.

I don't understand whats going on here. Can someone please enlighten me?

Hi -

The lines in blue conflict - if you had a genuine Vista DVD and restored the system 2x, why the need for the "boot disk"? The only Vista boot disk to use is a genuine one from Microsoft. The fact that start-up repair mentions a patch, means just that - the Vista OS has an unauthorized modification to it. Only Windows Update + hotfixes are allowed to change kernel code.

You will need to re-install Vista. In the interim to get your files, perhaps a non-Microsoft OS can be used such as Linux.

When you do get Vista re-installed, I would suggest that you not interrupt Windows Updates again if at all possible.

Regards. . .

A:After todays (7/19) Windows updates my computer keeps shutting off

Try a System Restore yet? Do it in Safe Mode (or repair disk/install DVD), hopefully no restarts to interfere the restore. Then install updates one by one (restart after each and wait a bit to make sure it is alright), Nvidia as last.

You can also try just downgrading GPU drivers first, and restore if it does restart like that.

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.===Search and delete the AdWare, PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) installed on your computer. Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop.Close all open programs and internet browsers.Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.Click on Delete tab follow the prompts.A log file will automatically open after the scan has finished. Please post the content of that log file with your next answer. You can find the log file at C:\AdwCleaner[Rn].txt (n is a number).=== Please downloadJunkware Removal Tool to your Desktop. Please close your security software to avoid potential conflicts.Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or 7, right-mouse click it and select Run as administrator. The tool will open and start scanning your system. Please be patient as this can take a while to complete, depending on your system's specifications. On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your Desktop and will automatically open. Please post the contents of JRT.txt into your reply.===Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:Link 1Link 2IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your DesktopDisable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts. As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console. Some Rookit infection may damage your boot sector. The Windows Recovery Console may be needed to restore it. Do not bypass this installation. You may regret it.**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protection programs, refer to this link --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.htmlDo not mouse click ComboFix's window while it's running. Go into Safe Mode and try System Restore. The update should have created a Restore Point just before installation.

To get to Safe Mode, reboot machine, after memory counting screen, repeatedly hit F8.

To get to System Restore, it is at Start Button > All Programs > Accesories > System Tools > System Restore.

I just re-installed WinXP Home on my PC. I tried to go to Windows Update, but when it scanned my machine to see what updates it needed, it said it could not continue. I went to Tools/Internet Options/Security, and set it to default, figuring that would make everything acceptable for Microsoft. I restarted the computer and tried to do it again with the same result. The error message is 0x8007000B.

I recently installed some files recommended by windows update. The problem is, they have now slowed my computer down emensely! I was wondering if there was any "record" or "undo" I can use without using system recovery, because I have installed programs since, I cannot install again as it would take valuable time.

I've noticed under "Processes" tabs that I have alot less processes runnning, the only "services" I can think of that are running are

1-explorer
1-taskmgr
1-minlogon
1-crss

Isn't there supposed to be svchost or something like that and lsass??

I have a windows pro bit laptop I was getting ready to load the update this weekend I left the computer on over night which was a mistake because windows took that time to install a series of updates to windows which stopped it from booting I noticed my computer as sitting at a totally black screen and was unresponsive no disk activity not response to mouse I rebooted the computer it resumed it's dead state I rebooted computer and let the system do is't repair thing This went on for minutes and on rebooting was still messed upIt tried the auto repair more times before selecting advanced options I attempted to do a system restore Strangely there was only one 7 computer. Updates Crashed Windows Windows my system restore Windows Updates Crashed my computer. Windows 7 point all the others where missing and the restore point from wouldn't work I went to command prompt and ran chkdsk d r and after letting that run through no major errors tried to reboot again I ran HP's system diagnostics on disk memory and system board everything checked out Then I tried to reboot with the generic repair and again with the system restore neither worked I rebooted again into safe mode I fired up device manager and disabled a network printer and scanner device that where showing yellow errors I then started msconfig and turned off Windows Updates Crashed my computer. Windows 7 everything but some MS drivers Rebooted same result I launched appwiz cpl and removed the one program I downloaded last night and tried booting again still no luckI let the system site for an hour in it's quite state nothing happened finally I looked at the updates It turns out that there were a bunch of windows updates installed this morning That is why there was a restore point not a working one but a restore Windows Updates Crashed my computer. Windows 7 point I tried to uninstall the windows updates But being that it is safe mode I can't fully uninstall them When the system goes to reboot it still hangs up Booting back to safe mode forces the stupid system to re-apply the updates that killed it in the first place These updates wrecked a perfectly good system Is there any way to recover

After reboot, secure website won't load. Restored back to yesterday, upon reboot, reminded about the 2 updates again, so I figured they should be removed, no?

Still no access to secure site.

Reinstalled KB831167 since it addressed that problem.

Still no access to secure site.

I usually don't do many Windows updates, so this is really ticking me off.

I probably have about an hour to fix it before hubby gets back home, or I may be missing for awhile

So I got this computer delivered today.

I tried going to the Store to upgrade to windows 8.1, but it told me that I needed to do all of the current updates first. So I checked for updates (on the "pretty" menu it just kept searching and didn't work, had to go through control panel... Haven't really had the best experience with 8 so far I tell ya!)

It's been stuck on installing update kb2938459 for literally hours now. I would like to get everything updated so that I can get to windows 8.1 and then update all my drivers and such. I've had this computer for all of 6 hours and I'm having such a horrible experience with this! I hope someone has some advice for me.

A:New computer (unboxed today!) windows updates, STUCK

This person seems to have the same problem as I do, and also looks to have come to a conclusion about it... But how do I do a clean install of 8 so that I can attempt these updates before adding a microsoft account? Or is the damage done already? There were no discs or anything sent with the new computer, and if possible I'd like to avoid making any huge changes like that, but if it's what I have to do then I will... again, advice?

A:Windows 7 updates same for updates every time it checks for updates

See if you can System Restore to before Net Framework 4 was installed and then Hide it when it is again offered in Updates.

But be aware that some programs will need it and may not prompt you of this leaving you to guess why they are not installing or performing correctly. For this reason I always install it.

So you might want to reinstall it using its standalone installer since it may not have uninstalled correctly anyway.

6gb ram crucial (2gb strips)
High end video card (i forgot b/c I am so stressed)

(purchased May 5, 09)

I was having issues before with installing updates. I tried the rename "SoftwareDistribution" trick and it worked briefly. Then I started having major issues that I traced backed to some rogue software (Rollback Rx Pro - AVOID!!). After uninstalling this, I tried to access updates. Still no dice. After I click on the Update link it just stalls. Ten minutes later - still no action.

I tried the Vista Startup Repair. It said there were no issues. Plz help.

A:Computer runs slow, windows can't get updates, can't remove Norton

Hi -

I don't see anything in the logs to suggest infection.

Run the Norton Removal Tool

1. Download this file:

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/englis...moval_Tool.exe

Save the file to the Windows desktop.

2. On the Windows desktop, double-click the Norton Removal Tool icon.

3. Follow the on-screen instructions. Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.

Also run the McAfee Removal Tool.

Download the McAfee Removal Tool.

Double click on MCPR.exe to launch it, then Click Run. A window should appear and disappear, this is normal. A new window should popup and begin the uninstall. When prompted to reboot your computer type Y.

You should now be able to install Avira. (nice choice) Run a full system scan, save the log and post it. (Click on the Report button when the full scan is complete.)

Welcome to Seven forums cooldudeclan.
Scroll through those 108 updates and see is Service Pack 1 is one of them. Try installing onlt that, it should have you reboot. Then check for updates and see if there aren't quite a few less. Install just 2-3 at a time. Check your system between installs for issues.

Hello experts,

I tried automatic updating of my ie today, but it said that it was a pirate version. I just bought the computer and on the underneath of the computer is an original Windows XP Pro sticker. I am thinking the person I bought it from just used some dodgy version of XP and used his own verification number. Is there any way (withiout losing all my programs or having to re-install) that I can change the current version of XP with the number of my original number to verify my IE program.

If not, what are the implications for me. Must I buy another windows XP programme?

Thanks Marcus

A:First, computer is slow, then Windows updates don't work, spyware found already

Hi smorley -

Sorry for the delay, but the forum is swamped.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spybot didn't find anything too bad, two cookies and Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.AntiVirusOverride

Why does Spybot flag changes in the Windows Security Center?

Since the Detections Update from July 25, 2005, Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4 has been detecting Security Risks (renamed to "Windows Security Center" on July 30) associated with Microsoft Security Center Registry changes. This is neither a false positive nor a bug. It is just an information.
Spybot-S&D only wants to bring to your attention that "someone" disabled one or more notifications in the Windows Security Center, e.g. the notifications that your virus protection is not active or not up-to-date.

If you changed the settings yourself you can safely tell Spybot to exclude those detections from further scans.
In order to do so please right-click each in turn, then click "exclude this detection from future scans". That way, should any other part of security center settings change, Spybot will still detect those.
The same is true if you have another security solution installed (like McAfee Security Center or Norton Internet Security). These programs also disable the Windows Security Center in order to take care of things themselves.

The reason why the changes are flagged by Spybot-S&D is that there are also malware programs that disable the notifications so the user doesn't take note of his security tools not being effective.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nothing really jumps out at me in that log.

You've posted a log from the Beta version of HJT. It's still undergoing testing, so we still prefer to work with v1.99.1

But, what we really want to see are a set of logs from Deckard's System Scanner.

Please do this:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simplyClick the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt

Click Upload.

What DSS will do: create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

I have read the forums for this question before. when trying to update windows so that i may download a newer version of zune to use with my window's phone I recieve this "window update cannot currently check for updates becuase the service is not running.
You may need to restart your computer." while i am checking for updates in the systems and securites section of my control panal. I have a Refurbished Gateway Touchscreen computer. It came with windows 7. Restarting has done nothing to help. Please help me
fix this problem.

In ?Windows Update? I have selected the recommended option of ?install updates automatically? and left the timing at the default of ?Every day at 3:AM.? I typically shut down my computer every night, so it is not running at 3AM. After my computer is turned on will I still get the Windows Update downloads? Will they install automatically at some point?
I am running Vista Home Premium 64bit on a Dell XPS 435MT.

A:Must computer be turned on at scheduled time for Windows Update to download updates?

Yes your computer needs to be turned on. If it's not, and you don't update manually, it will simply wait until you are powered on at 3am. And, if you are never powered on at 3am, you will never update.

Hello,

I have Windows 7, SP1, with Windows Update configured to:

"Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"

I am now unable to work on my computer when first setting Windows Update to download updates.

This is because once Windows Update has installed updates, a Windows Update screen showing a "Restart" button flashes on to the screen but then without any input from me, the computer reboots, losing me all my personal work that was in progress.

When I say "without any input from me", I mean that I do NOT click any reboot button.

This issue seems to have occurred for the first time, following the installation of Security Update
KB3185319, but of course I do not know if it really is connected with that.

I would appreciate a solution to this issue.

Thank you.

Windows XP Home SP1
I am helping a lady that her harddrive went bad so Dell put in a new one. I put the antivirus and some programs back on for her but I went to windows updates cause there should be a whole lot of updates there such as sp1 and all the updates that sp1 would have now (I told her she does not want sp2 right now) so where do I get the updates and how do I know what updates should be downloaded, it does not show any updates in add/remove programs and at the windows update site it only showed one update which I downloaded, but there has to be a whole bunch, anyone know anything about this?? Where to get the ones she needs and what ones they are??, Hope so Thanks

I keep getting Error message: Install Failure after Windows updates are downloaded and Windows attempts to install those updates.

The download is successfull, however, after Windows 7 attempts to install those updates I get this message:

Configuring Windows Update. Do Not Turn off computer.

After Windows attempts the installations of those updates, I get the following message: Failure configuring Service Pack. Reverting Changes. Error_install_failure (0x80070643).

I contacted Microsoft on the problem via emails....they went through a number of trouble shooting techniques....but after all of their recommendations, all they could tell me was to reinstall Windows 7.

I really would not like to do that. Do you have any idea what the problem is?

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:
6 GB RAM
AMD Athlon ll X4 750K
AMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3
Vista SP2

A:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silverlight today) so the secret might be to install updates in smaller batches instead of trying to install all dozen or so available updates in a single update session.

This is an inconvenient delay not anything serious Running Windows updates updates Microsoft Security blocking Essentials other windows if it makes a difference Issue Microsoft Security Essentials auto-updates block Microsoft Updates until MSE is finished Description I have Microsoft Update or Windows Update whichever it s known as in set to automatically check for updates but not download or install Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates without my approval I do this so I can review what s being updated I m a little wary Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates of Microsoft putting an anti-piracy app in as a quot critical quot update in the last year Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates or two Anyways when I boot up the computer it checks for updates and alerts me of them However Microsoft Security Essentials also auto-checks for updates upon boot and if it has an update it will automatically being downloading and installing it in the background Which is all well and good except whenever that s happening it causes MU to quot fail quot updates until it s done updating Thus I have to remember to wait until the MSE update is done then run the MU update Question MSE definition updates are included under quot Optional quot updates in MU is there a way to make MSE stop updating independent of MU so I can queue all the updates together I feel like this would be the easiest way to prevent this annoyance I don t see an option and I d rather put up with this annoyance if the only solution is to put all updates back into Microsoft s hands completely nbsp

A:Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates

My understanding of MSE is it will check several times during the to make it has the latest updates. Most GOOD VA programs will do this as there are several releases daily for AV definitions. This is the only way you and your machine will be aware of these releases.

When some of these attacks happen, a definition is released, but as the infection is refined, the the definition must also be refined and/or improved. I use F-Prot on my machines, but I install MSE on the kids and grand kids machines. I have seen as many as 12 releases in one day from F-Prot, this is what is call" being on top of things".

So I would not want to rely on ME being the one to check several times daily on all of my machines to see if a new release has been made.

I've got Office 2003 Student Edition (all installed, minus Outlook). I haven't done any updates to it. I did not install the Microsoft GDI+ Detection tool. And I only visit Windows Update (not Microsoft Update) and install the critical updates under custom install.

I'm wondering:

1. Are the updates for MS Office that are critical security things included when you do Windows Update? (For example, there are a number of things listed here towards the bottom: http://isc.sans.org/diary.html?storyid=2232 -- would those have been included in the last batch of critical Windows updates?

2. Do you need the GDI+ thing to do Office Updates?

3. When you go to the Office Updates site, it wants you to install and run some kind of Active X thing. Is this necessary? And can it cause any problems?

4. Can doing critical Office updates (separate from whatever, if anything, that comes with Windows Update) cause any problems or conflicts with other things on your computer?

Thanks for the help!Click to expand...

1. No. You either do Windows update and Office update, or you do Microsoft update, which does both at once.

2. I think so, but I am not positive. If you need it, it will install it, or, if you decline, you may not get updates. One way to find out, try it.

3. I don't think it will do the updates without it. Again, try it. It never caused any problems for me having it.

4. I can't guarantee that, nor can anyone else. Sometimes these "hotfixes" cause problems. Wait at least a few days after release to update was my motto. If there were any problems, you may hear about them, giving you the option to wait for that "fix" and, it gives MS time to be notified and correct it. Hopefully.

For what it's worth, I always kept my XP updated, waiting a few days after the release of course.
Hope this helps.

I don't have that detection tool either. At least some of the office updates are available through the windows update feature. You can also navigate to the Office updates site from the windows update site. There are no problems with installing the office updates separately. In fact, I generally download only 1 or 2 updates at a time as I am on dial-up.
