Cannot see other computers on local network.

Q: Cannot see other computers on local network.

I have a small network of four desktops and two laptops. One of my laptops, an IBM Think pad X40 cannot access the workgroup. It cannot even see itself, I time out and get an error if I try to view the workgroup.

"Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

All the other PCs function fine. This has really got my stumped and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Ive tried everything I can think of short of reformatting. I've reinstalled in hardware drivers, I've reinstalled all the client-service-protocol stuff in network connections, I've enabled and disabled firewalls, set it as the DMZ host on the router. Ive used both wired and wireless connections. I've gone through the wireless setup wizard probably 15 times now. I am totally baffled as to what is causing this.

Preferred Solution: Cannot see other computers on local network.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Cannot see other computers on local network.

Forgot to mention: Other computers can see the name of the IBM Laptop on the network but cannot access it with a network path not found error. And the Internet works fine.

Hi everybody.

I would be more then happy if somebody could help me.

I have a company with 8 PC on local network. But often we can?t see one of them which is called "server" and sometimes another one. We use one AV (bitdeffender), and Code two publick folder for sharing emails via outlook. The base settings, like visibility or firewall we have set fine.

So please does anyone know where the problem is?

I assume that you are tying to get internet access from the dsl/cable modem to the router then to your laptop/desktop?

hello bleepingcomputer, i have had this problem a while now. my computer blocks files sent from computers in my home network if any other computer in my network goes into computer->networks->(my computer) and tries to send me a file it just blocks it. the reaseon is that while my bigger brother lived in my house and always sent me troll files and stuff i managed to block acces to my computer throught the local network and now that hes moved out, i cant remember what i did. so if any of you experts out there knows how to do it, i could use some help to find the option to allow lan acces to my computer

A:cant receive packets from local computers in my home network

What are the OSes in your network?  If they aren't all Windows 7 or 8.x, there're special considerations.  In addition there're permission and firewall considerations, but since you've neglected to provide configuration details, that's about all I can tell you for now.

I have AVG Internet security version 7.5, it comes with a firewall.
It's installed on both my PC's, but I messed up.
I am no longer able to see into local networks as before.

How do I configure AVG firewall so both computers see each other when they are on?
I did check out the AVG support section but that only confused me.
Though I am still looking?

Thanks allot

I have simple network setup. 2 xp computers, 2 linux computers. All can access the internet. All can ping each other, connected to 4 port linksy wired and wireless router. Firewall on router turned off. Cannot ping on any computer to any address beyond router. If I ping google.com it comes back with:

pinging google.com (72.14.207.99) request timed out.

So I believe DNS should be o.k.

The above is true on all computers, so problem must be in the router, right?

You're in the best position to answer this! Please connect a computer directly to the modem (remember to power cycle it when switching) and try the ping.

One of our servers recently lost its outbout network connectivity. It can ping and communiate with any computer on our LAN, but it can't communicate with anything outside our network. It has a statically asigned IP address, and can ping the default gateway. We haven't changed any settings on the firewall or gateway....any thoughts? I'm sure this will require a bunch of followup information so ask away.

A:Specific server can only acces local computers

Interesting update!! Our firewall is set to one-to-one nat a real IP address to the servers internal IP address. If I turn one-to-one nat OFF, the server is able to ping out. It obviously can't receive connections, but it can ping out.....

Seems like a DNS or record issue or something, but I did a few DNS lookup things and they all seem to check out. Thoughts?

I had local file sharing when my home network consisted of XP and Win computers I just right clicked on folders I wanted to share in Windows Explorer and designated them as shared Simple and worked well I used no sign-ins of users and the user defaulted to Administrator Now I have upgraded two computers to Windows share only files home computers local on How to one wired ethernet and one laptop wired and wireless and added one How to share files only on local home computers new Windows laptop that is wireless only Windows has created a default user now with a sign-in but no password I need to move gigabites of data from computer to computer and need to read write and delete files from other computers on my local network My first attempt was to create a Homegroup and then join it with the other two computers It essentially works but the performance on transferring files on the wireless computer is terribly slow - unusable It also seems to kill my internet speed I now have all computers withdrawn from the Homegroup although it seems to have kept the Homegroup and keeps prompting me to join it Can't find any way to kill it My second attempt was to use the File Sharing I have two issues with that First it seems the intent is to allow anyone on the internet to share the file and that is the last thing I want it to do It won't seem to let me name other users on the home network and add them And even when I include Everyone as a share I can't access the folders with other computers On one I get an error message saying I have no permissions On another I get a permissions sign in screen but doesn't let me sign in Any ideas what is going on here I would most like to just use simple file sharing and let named users from the other computers share files with no permissions I have a feeling something is asking for sharing permission somewhere possibly from the Homegroup setup that still seems to be there Help needed

All of the computers on my home network have Vista Ultimate installed. I have a Netgear DG834Gv3 modem and wireless router. I recently upgraded this to Vista status (see http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101649.asp). Now, 2 of the computers are connected by ethernet cable, and 2 of them are connected wirelessly. One of the computers connects absolutely fine to the internet, sharing files etc. but the other wireless one only has 'Local Access' and no Internet access. I have tried absolutely everything relating to switching everything off for 2 minutes and then trying again with no avail. SOMEBODY HELP ME PLEASE! I NEED THE INTERNET ON THIS COMPUTER!

A:Vista, local access only, but works on other computers...?

If your network is secured, disable encryption on the router and try to connect that way. If successful you should then be able to re-enable encryption and reconnect.

If still a problem please show ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

As the topic says, I'm having an issue where a computer on a network cannot see the other computer on the network.  It is able to connect to the internet, and I double-checked based on earlier threads and the network discovery IS ON.  This computer
is able to create a Homegroup and the other computer on the network is able to see the shared folders when it joins the homegroup, but I cannot create a homegroup on the
other computer and have this computer see it to join it.  The other computer sees this computer in Windows Explorer under Network, but as far as the problem computer is concerned, it is the only computer on the network.
Despite this, when I open up the Network Map, it shows both computers, the router, and the modem.

Question:
I have three Windows 8.1 Pro computers ( not on domain ) One of the three we consider the master and would like to take the User Configuration - Administrative Templates configuration and export it and import it into the other computers. I was wondering
what is the best way about going about how to do this?
I have tried the following and did not work is this only for Win7 machines?:
1.) Open %systemroot%\system32\grouppolicy\

2.) Within this folder, there are two folders ? ?machine? and ?user?. Copy these to folders to the ?%systemroot%\system32\grouppolicy ? folder on the target machine. All it needs now is a reboot or a ?gpupdate /force?.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

This sounds really noobie of me but is it possible to improve local network transfer speed by adding a 2nd network card. I was planning to connect one exclusively for lan transfers and another one hooked to a separate wireless router.

Right now only a maximum of 3 users can stream SD videos off the PC before it gets a little choppy.

The pc in question runs on windows 7 and it's board has built in gigabit, I happen to have a spare gigabit card.

A:Will adding a 2nd network card improve local network transfer speed

That won't really help the way you are describing the problem, although adding access points will help with streaming to wireless devices.

Although there is a setting in Group Policy that allows you to use two connections at the same time, I don't believe it will help in this situation.

I've done many HD movie streaming tests on my system.

I can stream from my media PC to at least 7 other machines at the same time, 4 wired, 3 wireless, plus my TV, and have no problems at all, no skipping, no freezing, even with the same movie in the same place or with 8 different movies at once, my TV is connected to my media center PC so counts as the 8th one.

This is Gb LAN, and 300Mbps wireless but even the 65Mbps limited laptop has no problem.

I'm not really sure why you are seeing these limitations but it may be the router.

HI,

I have installed server 2003 on a small network and created a domain that is the same as the public domain name (ie the companies website).

This is now causing a problem because when i type in the public address (for example www.company.com) it is trying to resolve it locally - because the local domain name is also company.com.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get round this problem?

Many thanks in advance

A:problem with the local network having the same domain name as the public network

add 'local.' to the internal domain or change it altogether.

Your public domain should not have any connection into your private infrastructure,
but you may have references from private->public; not very common.

OK there is a catch here you know how the printers after 20 min of no using them is going in stand by mode ... for some reason the network card is going in standby mode for the printer also if you try to print over the network you gonna see that the printer is going back visible.
Solution: There was a option in Network Monitor Devices for don't going on that "standby mode" check and see if this will help you.

A:Windows XP Home "My Network Places" refusing to show network computers

You need to look at the dependency list for each service. In the case of Computer Browser, it's Workstation and Server.

Since Workstation is failing, that's probably the place to start.

Do you have WKSSVC.DLL in C:\Windows\system32? That's the workstation service, and it appears to be the missing module. I'd first try copying that from the installation disk, if it's missing, and then register it too by:

Start, Run, regsvr32 wkssvc.dll

If you can't find the DLL, you can run sfc /scannow to restore missing files.

A shortcut may be to download the file from DLL Dump and register it as described above.

A:VPN and local network

You'll have to do something called "split-tunneling" to access both the internet and LAN.
I don't know what operating system you have, and the steps to do this are different depending on the OS, so here are a few links to help you figure it out (I honestly have next to no experience in this area):

The fastest way -- FTPDMIN: Minimal ad-hoc file transfer Windows FTP server Windows 7 will alert you that it's listening on the FTP ports but that's what you want right? Make note of the IP address it's listening on and make sure that's the address on your local network you want.

Then just use your favorite FTP client in Ubuntu...

I posted a couple of days ago about my network access dropping from local amp internet to local to Local Fix Network no connection after Local Network Fix recently upgrading to vista I tried every solution othe people have posted on the net but my problem still persisted So last night I reinstalled vista and created a restore point after the st start-up I was able to use the internet without interruption for over hrs Then this morning windows Local Network Fix installed updates After the updates were installed my problem started again I went ahead and restored my computer to the st restore point and now it is working fine My fix to this problem is to not install any updates I know that it is not the proper fix but for anyone as frustrated with vista as i am this is a way to maintain your internet connection I am a newcomer to vista but I found out that this problem has been happening to other for years I can't understand why microsoft wont fix this problem If this post helps anyone else with the same problem please reply with your story

A:Local Network Fix

the problem with not updating vista is it leaves your operating system wide open to attack , thats exactly how conficker spread. An unpatched OS can make your firwall and AV next to useless

why dont you set your updates so they are not automatic , then pick the updates to install , install them one at a time run your pc for a while each time until you find the offending update

Hi,

I'm sure this is a simple problem, but I have a direct line from the school network into my flat. If I plug in my laptop to the school network through an ethernet cable, I can see all the other network computers and shared drives under 'Network' in explorer. When I connect the network to my own wireless router so I can have wifi in the flat, I can't see any of them under Network. Is there a way to make them visible so I can access shared drives and folders when using the wifi connection?
I am using windows 7 professional, and my wireless router is a TP-Link WR840N.
Thanks in advance,

A:My Network (8 computers)

The domain name Active Directory is asking has nothing to do with domain names on the internet. It is just a name you can give to your group of computers and how your computers know they belong to that group.

You don't need Active Directory or any of that Microsoft mumbo jumbo to share the internet connection and files between the computers. Ignore all this domain stuff, set all computers to belong to the same workgroup (so you can share files between computers). Your router can take care of sharing the internet connection.

Plug the switch to one of your router's local ports.
BTW my finger counting shows that you don't have enough ports in your switches to hold 8 computers.

A:need help to network my computers

Go to Network properties and make sure TCP-> is bound to both network cards. Then double click on TCP/IP--> your network card and designate an IP address for each machine as follows:
1st machine - 192.168.0.1
2nd machine - 192.168.0.2
subnet mask 255.255.255.0

I assume you have a hub to connect both computers. This way you will have a TCP/IP network between both computers that can also share internet access. If you're going to use a gateway in order to connect the second computer to the internet, use the 192.168.0.1 address for that computer.

A:Trying To Network My Computers

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

"Windows cannot create the network map because the network type is set to public. In order to view the network map, you must set the networks location type to Home or Work in Network and Sharing center."

Going back to the network and sharing center I cannot find anything clickable that will make these changes. This is on the laptop. When doing the same thing on the desktop I get the same map and when I drop the tab down and select the 'unidentified network' I get...

hope this helps.

A:can't network 3 computers

Here are some basic debugging steps to take first, you need to establish basic connectivity first and deal with any firewall issues.
Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type.

PING <ip address>
or
PING <computer name>

Where:
<ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address
<computer name> - is the computer name

A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Note: You can obtain the IP address and computer name of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG /ALL. This should work for any Windows version. The IPCONFIG /ALL display will provide a wealth of useful information for debugging your network connection.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:

COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
Computer Browser
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Server
TCP/IP Netbios helper
Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations)
WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations)
Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic.

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing.
All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Places (Network and Sharing Center in Vista), make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login. NOTE: Vista's default is to require a password on the account to enable file/print sharing.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing. You can open a command prompt as described above and type the following command: nbtstat -n. This will display the status of NetBIOS or indicate it's not configured.

I have a home network with two computers running W-7. I'm trying to add another computer as a media center PC. It is running XP but having no luck adding it to this network . Can someone help me out?

P.S. I'm trying to set up a wireless connection.

A:Add computers to a W-7 network

Well...what have you tried?

Did you use the Win 7 default name (Workgroup) when trying to add the XP system, rather than mshome?

Sorry, I don't know anything about wireless...I still prefer wired .

As the title states, I'm trying to start a homegroup. I start one up, and being that both of my computers have the same name, they don't see each other.

I've got that part figured out, I just need to rename the laptop!

Woo, that's all fine and dandy, except when I renamed my laptop from Ken-PC (the name shared by both laptop and desktop) to KenLaptop and rebooted, there was a whole slew of problems caused by the namechange. Very long story somewhat shortened, it looked like I was booting up win 95.

Multiple error screens, very retro GUI, all fixed by renaming my laptop Ken-PC again.

I'm just trying to be able to share my files between the two computers! HEEEELP!
I thank you for reading, and at the very least, being able to vent if nobody can help.

we are on a domain network of 20 PC and server we can't see each others but we can access by writing the IP
any help?
I am connected to the network, Internet is working fine but only this problem.

A:Can't see computers network please help

Hi there

Has the server blocked the SMB ports (445 etc). I assume you CAN connect to network drives on the server.

I think a lot of people are getting away from using NETBIOS or things like that to resolve host names.

A:How do I network two computers?

There are a few different things you can try. Are you wanting to just hook them both up to each other, or allow them both to access the internet?

If you are just wanting to hook them up together you can simply use a crossover cable to hook them up directly to the Ethernet ports.

But if you want to allow them both to access the internet you need to get a router. There are plenty of articles in TechSpot describing them thoroughly. Have a look around.

Small office network, just moved into a new building. Trying to connect a laptop to the network to use shared resources. Machine is running XP, Workgroup name is the same (has been checked several times) and no other computers show up in My Network Places. Can connect to the internet just fine, can also connect to computers on the network if the path is entered manually. I need however to connect to a shared printer on another computer and if it cannot locate the computer on the network I'm not sure how to connect to the shared printer. This happens whether the laptop is connected to the network wireless or wired.

None of the other computers in my house can see me (4 others), but I can see them and transfer files to their computers. I used to have Norton Systemworks 2005, but I uninstalled that so I doubt it's firewalling me. I d/l'd AVG free and ZoneAlarm free versions and added the network IP range to allow it (which allowed me to see them, but not the opposite). Anyone know what it could be? Windows firewall is off.

Oh and we all have XP (Though I have Pro and I think everyone else has Home)

I have two Win 7 computers on my wired network and 6 Win XP computers on this same network. This main computer was Win 7 and just upgraded to Win 10 in November. For a year this network has worked just fine, plug and play basically when I set it up, now after Christmas shutdown (2 weeks), I can't see any of the computers on this network. The only thing I can see is the media drive on a computer called 6Head2. All I really do is transfer files from this main computer out to those 8 other computers.

What is wrong with my computer? Network discover, file sharing all checked, network location was changed from Public to Private today by me. But it did work last year, even with the network location being public.

A:can't see other computers in network

Which PC has created the homegroup? Once the home group is created, have the other PC joined that homegroup with the password created by the PC that created the homegroup? Have you checked the settings for each PC to make sure that each is set to "turn on network discovery". Is the "turn on password portected sharing" been enabled/disabled. I find it easier to have all PC's have that set to disable while in the homegroup. Basically, the homegroup is a small network with in your home network strictly for file sharing.

I am using Windows 7 HP, with a broadband connection, on an Intel i3 quad core, and a DLIINK router.

I was browsing the internet, when all of a sudden it stopped (browser=Chrome) loading pages, and a pop up appeared saying there was an error, and 2 computers on my network were sharing the same IP address.

I don't have 2 pc's, just the one, and don't understand how this could happen. I did have a virus last week - Trojan.ADH.2 but do not know if that is related to this problem.

I closed my browser, and opened a cmd line and typed ipconfig /renew, then restarted my computer, and since then I have not had any problems I am aware of.

Does this mean I have a virus or mal/spy ware on my PC?

A:Why all computers not on network?

Hi there,

Have you verified that Network Discovery is turned on?
Enable or disable network discovery

I'd check for a 3rd party firewall software installed if you have any. If you are using built-in Windows firewall make sure that Files/printer sharing is allowed.

It won't hurt to verify your current setup, please see this Tutorial.

Hi there, I have had soo many problems with my network because the signal from my router could not reach to my computer with the external adapter installed. I Have tried linksys router with linksys adapter and still no go. I bought a new Belkin router which is a wireless pre-n router with 3 antennas instead of the two antennas that are on most routers. I am still using my kinksys adapters . The computer that I was having the problem with is 150 feet from the router in another building. My network is now working great, No dropped signal's and no problems on any computer. In the house where my main computer and router are setup I have a lot of electrical appliance's near by, Microwave/2.4 meg phone/Lights etc, and every thing works great.Check out the Belkin.

A:Network with three computers.

I have seen the opposite.. The Linksys connects where the belkin doesn't..

Different brand routers may show different performances due to the enviroment they are used in, the firmware of the router, the technology used, the sub channel of the wireless connection, and other various reasons.

Therefore, I see no reason to bad mouth linksys, or to set a preference here.. It's like a ATI vs Nvidia debate, it really depends on what works for you.

I'm glad you found something that works for you particular circumstances.

A:Computers on network cannot see each other

This just happened out of nowhere yesterday morning My local "Network a - internet? to the network to not Connected 7" but Solved: roommate was using her laptop with no issues until suddenly the connection cut out She tried reconnecting but had no luck so she waited still no signal She was able to see our network name but it would not allow her to connect to it Same thing when I tried my laptop I could see it scanning wi-fi and showed available connections including our own but it wouldn t let me connect The desktop in our home office has internet The modem is showing all the proper lights flashing indicating there is ethernet DSL and internet When we open our laptops and get a signal even for a brief moment it kills the connection on the desktop and all lights on the modem go off except the power light which starts flashing slowly Totally loses connection As soon as we close the laptop the connection comes back on the desktop I noticed that the icon in the Solved: Connected to "Network 7" a local network - but not to the internet? tray that indicates connectivity the two computer monitors flashing blue back and forth looks different than normal There is no little globe in Solved: Connected to "Network 7" a local network - but not to the internet? front of them there are just two monitors and there is usually a globe showing internet access So I clicked it and it says we re connected to quot Network quot Access local So I took a screen shot of this What is going on can someone help me out I have no idea what to do but we need internet on the Solved: Connected to "Network 7" a local network - but not to the internet? laptops If you need any more information from me feel free to ask Thanks nbsp

Hello,

I'm puzzled as to how "add a local printer" and "add a network, wireless or bluetooth printer" are different.

Under "Add a local printer", I can use an existing port or create a new port, under which I can set a TCP/IP address to connect to shared printer over network. What's the difference between existing port and new port? How is this port local when I can set IP address to printer shared over network?

And how does "add a network, wireless or bluetooth printer" function differently than the former? I'm trying to distinguish the nature between the two so I can get a better understand for troubleshooting purposes. I appreciate any help.

Hey Chris (I'm assuming your name is Chris from the IP settings...),

Let me be the first to welcome you to Vista X64 forums.

It looks like your router/modem does not have DHCP enabled (or it has a MAC Address filter in place.) Do you know how to edit your router's settings? If not, your ISP may need to do it from their side.

I would like to thank you one hundred ten percent for posting this information from the get-go. It makes our lives so much easier when information is posted in this manner.

It looks like when your computer is set to DHCP/Automatic IP, your router is not giving the PC an IP address. If I'm not mistaken, the 169.254... IP addy is an APIPPA address (Automatic Private IP Address). This address is used by Windows when it is looking for an address but the router it's connected to does not want to give it one.

This either means your router has DHCP disabled, or your router has a "filter" on it baring all but a specific set of MAC Addresses/computer names from connecting to it.

I am running XP home on two wired (cat 5) computers. I have replaced one and although I can see the other computer in explorer and the file folders I can't gain access due to a dialog box that asks for a password. The other computer has full access to the computer I'm having the problem with. The network is working fine going one way only. I have set up many networks and this is the first time I have had this problem. I have gone thru all setups to confirm that they are correct! ???

HELP!

Don

A:log in requirement for local network

The account you logon your machine has to exist on the replaced machine. Same name same password. You also need to have file and print sharing enabled as well as the windows firewall set to allow file and print sharing. Than you will have access without being asked for a password.
