External HDD error- Not accessible, parameters incorrect

Q: External HDD error- Not accessible, parameters incorrect

Hi, I am having a problem with my external hard drive not working. My laptop cannot read the drive, it does not display properly in my computer and when I try to click on it it freezes and the message appears "Drive is not accessible, parameters are incorrect". I used it about three weeks ago and it was fine so I don't know what happened. I always make sure to safely remove it and am careful not to damage it. The light still still turns on when plugged in and I can hear it trying to work.

I really want to keep the files as they are from my previous laptop which died and do not have them stored anywhere else. My fault I know, but I had thought external hard drives were more reliable and I do not like the idea of cloud storage. Because of this I am hesitant to try CHKDSK. Is there anything else I can do to recover the files or fix the drive? If I take it to a computer technician would they be able to do it?

Preferred Solution: External HDD error- Not accessible, parameters incorrect

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am getting "E:\ is not Accessible. Incorrect Function" message when i try to burn a CD or DVD on an external DVD\RW that works on other PC's. Last week I tried a drag and drop in windows explorer that failed. since then my internal and external drives won't burn. they don't even show up in my Roxio as burn devices. I did not have any problems prior to the drag and drop failure. I have since uninstalled all of the burning softwares that were on my pc. I know it is not a hardware problem as I am able to burn to the external on other pc's. any ideas??? please help.

A:Getting E:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function message on an external burner

This may work

I had the same problem and recently cured it by going to the Drive letter in Windows Explorer and right clicking on it. Go to Properties; Click on Recording; Check "Enable CD recording on this drive". If it wasn't clicked before this will probably do it.

A:Error: D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function.

It could be a firmware issue, check the PC manufacturers site for an update, if it is a store bought DVD drive, check the manufacturers site of the drive for a firmware upgrade.

Just recently i began getting an error while trying to view blank cds or dvds and WMP11 does not recognize any drives capable of burning.

d: not accessible incorrect function error

It is a LiteOn DVD-RAM drive. This is the first problem i have had with it and it seems to be XP specific. Vista has no problems. I can burn with Nero 8 in XP with no problems. Also Kubuntu burns fine and reads everything.

I tried uninstalling the drive and restarting with no luck. Is there any other drivers i can reinstall? I put in new firmware for the drive trying to get it to work with no success.

Any ideas?

Its showing an error message for an R:\ drive. Do you have any devices attached using the letter R? Check "My Computer".
Also, it could be that your shortcut got messed up. Click the start button and type:

Then press enter. If it works, tell me.

Hi I have a WD hard disk, recently I was in a busy cyber cafe to print something, the man who was printing pulled the hardisk out without safely removing, now windows asks me to format it and it has become RAW.
There is also an error saying that it is inaccessible every time I open it in mycomputer or even when I use run.

A:External Hardisk error 'e:\ is not accessible'

1. Do not panic. Keep your cool.

2. Do not format that volume/drive.

3. Do not on any count run check disk.

Now you said RAW. Please post a screenshot of how your drive/s look in Disk Management. I want to confirm that it indeed is RAW.

Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

Once confirmed, you can straightaway head to the topic Recovery with Partition Wizard: SanDisk Cruzer Blade 16GB

How old is your computer?
I had a problem a while back, about 3 weeks after getting a new computer, my DVDRW drive refused to read dvds but would read CDs, which really took the biscuit, so I phoned computer company and they said that it was a dodgy one and sent me a new one, and it worked fine. Do you have any other issues with the drive? maybe you need a new one? have you uninstalled/reinstalled any appropriate drivers?

This is the error message I get when I try to use E:\ DVD+RW drive. I can't use Windows Explorer to enable CD Recording because I get the same error message. Properties indicates that E:\ is full with no space to record. DS tells me that some programs used can mess it up this way, and he's trying to remember how he fixed it before.

Try installing a trial version of Nero, but only install the BurningROM portion, not all the other bloated junk. BurningROM is still one of the best out there.

Or try DeepBurner Free and see if this helps.

DeepBurner won't let you format and use the disk as drive (that I know of) but it may allow you to burn a folder and files etc. to it. Same with BurningROM.

I personally have never liked Windows Builtin Burning Feature, never had that much success with it.

Other than that,,,,,,, may be a problem with the drive itself. Or check the properties of the drive and make sure it is set to allow burning.

There is also a Group Policy that will disable burning functions.

A:E:\is not accessible. Incorrect function.

See if you can obtain the brand and model number of the motherboard and install the drivers for that board.

Sounds like the IDE controllers may have become corrupted OR the partition table of the harddrive may have become corrupted as well.

Try to obtain the motherboard drivers first. You can download them to your desktop in a new folder and run the drivers from there.

Good luck.

I have seen similar threads, but my OS is Windows 2000. I did highlight the D drive, right click, click on Properties, clicked on the Hardware tab, highilghted the manufacturer, clicked properties, clicked properties again and then checked the box for Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device.

When I went back to Windows Explorer and clicked on the D-drive, I got the same error.

Suggestions?

A:D:\ is not accessible Incorrect function

Try disabling DMA (Direct memory access) for the drive.

I had the 'Incorrect function' problem with a new DVD burner when trying to access burned dvds. I'm using windows 2000 and I tried ejecting and reloading the disc and it didn't work. At one point it was able to show me a directory on the dvd+r disc but then when i tried to open it it said something like 'the folder is missing or has been moved'. Then I remembered i had enabled DMA (Direct memory access) because the dvd burning app (Nero 7) suggested it. So I ran the 'Nero DMA Manager' and disabled DMA for both of my cd/dvd drives (one cd burner and one dvd/cd burner). This fixed the problem completely. But I might try enabling it just for the dvd burner on a hunch that that might work too.

Hope this helps someone...

My cd-burner is currently showing the message D:/ not accessible - Incorrect Function whenever i put in a cd-rw and attempt to open the drive.

After I reinstalled the OS (XP), it worked fine. However, I was so stupid that i uninstalled the Roxio software that came along with the OS. That's when it showed the message.

When I bought the computer, it came along with a Roxio EasyCd Creator 5. This was optional since you could already burn CD's. I have tried installing/uninstalling that several times but it was no use. I have also installed/ reinstalled the hardware too but it was no use either.

The drive can read burned CD-R's and can install programs.

Is there any way to solve this?

Thanks a lot!

A:D:Not accessible incorrect function

You cannot copy data to a CD-R or DVD-R disc like you can with a USB thumb drive or a floppy disk.

You need to use a disc burning program to burn the data to the disc.

Ashampoo Burning Studio Free 6.83.4312 is a free and very user-friendly one that I personally use.

---------------------------------------------------------

Is the D: drive in your computer capable of burning discs?

Is it a standard CDROM or DVDROM drive or is it a CDRW or DVDRW drive?

If I drag and drop files to the CD/DVD burner I get the message ~ "G:\is not accessible - incorrect function" and occasionally it asks me to insert a new disc when there is one in there. It has no problem playing pre-burned or commercial CD/DVD's. I can burn using other software such as Veritas. I checked in Device Manager and there seem to be no problems. I've read a similar post which advises looking into the device properties and ensuring that 'recording' is enabled but I don't have a 'recording' tab in the drive properties. Any clues where the problem may be?

A:Solved: D:/ is not accessible- incorrect function

To drag and drop files onto a DVD in Windows XP you need special packet writing software install such as Nero's INCD or Roxio's Drag n' Drop, or Sonic's DLA(now part of Roxio). Windows XP only has limited burning capability for CD-R/CD-RW discs, but non for DVD's.

You're better off burning a DVD with either the Lenovo provided software OR a free alternative such as CDBurnerXP: http://cdburnerxp.se/en/home

Hi everyone,

I have an extremely annoying problem at the moment when trying to record files on to my cd. I do everything in the normal way : click on the file I want to copy to CD, then under File and Folder Tasks I click Copy this file, then in the Copy items dialog box I click the cddrive. I then get the message R:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function.. I also get the same problem if I just try to drag a picture or file onto the cd icon...

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Hopefully it's quite simple to remedy, but I'm baffled. I think this problem has existed for quite some time, but at the moment I really need to use this facility.

I'm not really gemmed up on computers, so if anyone can help me out please keep it simple.

Cheers and I hope someone can help!

Mike

I can not access DVD media (read or write). I have:
1) Uninstalled all 3rd party burning software.
2) Deleted the upper and lower filters.
3) Went into the properties of each drive and enabled recording.
4) Edited the HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives\ and changed the Drive Type so that one drive is a 2 and the other is a 3.

Win XP Home was clean installed in July '08. All updates are current. Currently running SP3. Using Kaspersky Anti-Virus and no viruses have been found.

Anybody have any ideas?

I have a Dell Vostro 1520 laptop with Windows XP (last 3 years). It has now stopped recognising any blank cd or dvd and gives the error message "D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function". It can however read/play cd's or dvd's that have data/music/movies on them.

I have gone to Dell's support site and applied firmware updates for CD/DVD drive. I have also previously changed D drive setting to "enable burning of CD's".

The D: drive shows up in Windows Explorer but I cannot even select to. I click on D drive and cursor jumps back to C:, so I cant even get to it.

What else can i do?

When trying to copy files to a CD to take a local drugstore for printing I was unable to access the D drive. We kept getting a message:"D:\ is not accessible - incorrect function". Eventually we moved the files to a shared folder and I accessed them from our other computer and did the copying on that computer's drive. The drive on the original computer does work - I put in two different cds - one an audio CD and the other witha Flash presentation on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The computer in Question is a Dell desktop. The computer also has Roxio CD creator on there - that wouldn't even let me copy pictures with the version that we have.

A:External HD not Accessible

The drive may be corrupted. If you can access the drive in Safe Mode, go to Start/Search and type CMD, right click the CMD results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Command Prompt type the drive letter of the External (eg) G: and press enter (eg) G:\> at this prompt type chkdsk /R and press enter. Now type a Y for Yes to Unmount the drive. Check Disk will try and fix any errors this will take some time.
You can also download WD's DataLifeGuard for Windows and run the Short and Long tests on the drive, if either test fails the drive needs to be replaced.

A:External HD not accessible

Besides several free and shareware data recovery programs available for download you can elect to boot from a live Linux cd like ubuntu or Knoppix since that will easily read various partition types and simply copy and paste files from the old to new. You first have to see each hard drive mounted however which is easy by going into Applications>computer while booted live and double click on each drive.

Immediately you will see the "can't mount drive" message while a new icon suddenly appears on the desktop for each one. Those are simply double clicked on there to end seeing two explorer like windows come up. One old tutorial explains how to use Knoppix while ubuntu will easily work as well. Your disk may have changed from NTFS to RAW.

If it is the case, there are many programs which can recover data from RAW HDD

Hi,
Can you go to Computer>Right Click>Properties>Security and check that you have full access to the partition.

If you do and it still does not work you could try this tutorial.

A:WD external drive not accessible

Have you tried removing all power from the drive for an hour, then try again?

One of my Seagate externals did exactly what yours did, I let it cool down over night with power disconnected, connected it back the next morning, copied some of my data off, but it went RAW on me again, so I put it in 2 layers of baggies and left it in the freezer for 1/2 hour, then set it in a small cooler of ice (baggies still on it) then I was able to finish copying data off of it (500gb), then I sent it back to Seagate for warranty.

I hope you are as lucky.

my WD harddisk became inaccessible after I got a game copied into it

when I connected it to my laptop, there's no autoplay and when I tried to open it via my computer, it says;
G:\ is not accessible

error performing inpage operation
I can't open it, and I can't scan it also
it is new so I don't think it's because of the age
using XP here
I have no idea what's going on
anyone?

A:external harddisk not accessible

External drives are generally less reliable than internal ones. This is because of the connection interface inside the enclosure, rarely is it actually the drive itself. That's why the problem plagues external drives (all makes, not just WD) as compared to internal ones. Some say it's because the small enclosure (compared to a PC) restricts heat dissipation, especially in external drives without a cooling fan (and most don't have one).

Since it's new I would return it, either to the shop or to WD (you'll need to contact WD and ask for authorisation (an RMA) before returning it for replacement.

A:External drives not accessible

Hi ericksb,

Welcome to SevenForums.

The questions to be answered:

1. Were these externals accessible on this specific laptop before and suddenly turned inaccessible?

2. You tried your friend's external drive on this laptop and even that was not accessible. Did you try the other way - plugging in your externals into your friend's laptop?

To me it looks like that it is a company-owned laptop and the administrator has set it up that way - no USB storage devices.

I am having a problem with 2 external hardrives. The drives are in external enclosures and connected to my laptop via USB. My OS is XP.

When I first connect either drive, I sometimes get the requestor with the standard Open to View Files options, however sometime I don't and if I click on the drive icon in My Computer instead of being given the option to Open to View Files, it only gives me the Open With menu.

If the drive connects correctly and I get the Open to View Files option and open the drive, if I then close that window I am then unable to re-open the drive to see the files.

This is really frustrating and I've searched all over the place to figure out whats going on.

Hopefully someone here might be able to help.

Thanks

I have just upgraded to Win 7 and want to use old hard drive (Seagate 500 gb) as external usb drive. Other drives work just fine in the caddy.

Hello,
I connected my existing external HDD (@USB2.0) to a new PC with Win 8.1. From the beginning all partitions mounted properly and were accessible as expected but later suddenly the first partition was not accessible due to insufficiant access rights. All other partitions keep being accessible except this one. I wonder how this could happen, especially when it's a FAT32 format partition (no eser-level security support) The exact errors I'm receiving are these:

Currently you don't have permissions to access this folder.
For obtaining permanent access to this folder, click on the option Continue.

If I click Continue I get this warning:

Permission to access this folder was denied.
For obtaining access to this folder, you'll have to use security tab.

If I click the Security tab link, I get properties dialog for that partition opened, however no Security tab is available (oviously, this is a FAT32 volume)

I would appreciate an soulution how to reenable access to this drive.

I have an external hard drive case, that I have been using to access a variety of IDE drives via USB for quite some time. I recently attached it to a new computer -- it was detected, installed, recognized as IDE to USB, appears in My Computer/Explorer, even the make of HD noted. When I attempt to open it I get a message stating that it is 'not accessible...... because of an I/O error'.
Message the same for any HD installed in case.
Still works fine on old computer but I am trying to migrate everything to the new system.
Another similar setup for notebook hard drives works on both computers...
'Case' is USB 2.0 as is new computer. Old computer is USB 1.1
'Case' powered by adapter not USB.
All computers running WinXP Home.

Here's what I would do but you may wait for others to reply with their ideas. I would take the drive out of the external enclosure and hook it up as a slave in the PC. If the system picks it up and your data is readable, then you've got other problems and you can trouble shoot from there. If it's not readable, then Maxtor may be correct. Good luck.

A:External hard drive is not accessible

Hello Neo10!

This is quite unpleasant of a situation you have.
Is this an external device by design or an internal hard drive connected via USB?
This could be a driver issue. Make sure you have updated the drivers for the device and the USB drivers of your PC.
Also, has the drive always shown with this drive number (I: ) or is this a first? This may actually be another device or slot of the PC and your drive may actually not be seen at all. Connect it to another computer and see what happens.

A:External Hard Drive not accessible

Did you partition and format it? Return the jumper to Master, and format it.

Right click on My Computer, Manage, Disk Management. Find the external drive, and right click on it. You may have to initialize it, then create a partition (I recommend extended, not primary), and then one or more logical drives. It will then show up in My Computer.

Hello,

I have windows 7 32 bit on a toshiba laptop. I am posting becuase this is a strange situation. I have a goflex exteral terrabyte. The computer recognizes it, lists it in the device manager and claims that it is working properly. However, I can't access it, I can't save anything to it, or get anything from it, or even see the files on it.

Now, I have a mac and a pc, the drive said it could be used on both. So i first used it on the mac (and it works perfectly) but not on the pc. It there a share error maybe?

Any help would be appreciated. I am an editor and I was hoping to be able to easily move from my computer (mac) to my clients (pc).

Thank You for any help or opinions you can give.

P.S. the drives are up to date.

A:External Hard Drive Detected but not Accessible

Hi Misti,

The first use of the drive was on the Mac, is that correct? And there is no problem on the Mac - right?
i really don't have an answer, but I've had issues with my own ext HD. The original system I connected it to was XP, then a Vista machine. the HD would request me to chkdsk every time I plugged it in. Then I could see the files and on some volumes access them. Other volumes were set as read-only. After some time just being attached, the HD would mark itself offline.

It will help if you can post a full screen snapshot of Disk Managment.

Thanks,

Greetings,

I keep my music on a 500GB external hard drive (no, it's not full...), along with cd images and other random stuff. I installed Windows 7 Professional on both my desktop computer and my Dell Mini 9 Netbook, enjoying it thoroughly. However, I can't access my music folder on my external hard drive when i plug it into the netbook. I initially had the external hard drive plugged into the desktop, so I'm guessing there's a permissions problem.

What I want to do is completely make the folder accessible to everyone. I don't want any restrictions on it whatsoever. How do I do this? I'm a Windows XP Home person, so I know nothing of file permissions.

Thanks,

Hi,
I have been using an external USB Western Digital 'Elements' desktop storage drive as my main backup for a couple of years now without any problems. Over the last 48 hours the drive doesn't seem to be registering in 'My Computer' or 'Disk Management'? My Folder options are also showing Show hidden files option.
I've looked at other Forums and the suggestion is that the OS is at fault, I have also tried the External Drive on my Laptop and it worked fine. The other issue, which I believe is also connected to this one is that my secondary internal drive is also not showing?
Thanks for you help.
Jim
ps there was a moment last night when it was actually working but when I attempted to back up some files I received an error note advising me that the Drive was unknown, it has been inaccessible since then.

A:External Drive not accessible therefore not visible in 'My Computer'

Hello simmyjiff!

If the drive is working on your laptop just fine, then the problem isn't with it. You could be having a hardware issue with your other PC.

What is your secondary internal drive as make and model? Is it also completely gone from the system? Could you please provide us with your motherboard model, a list of all your storage devices and a screenshot of your Disk Management.

Also, if the two now not-working devices load successfully to your laptop, back them up through there, just in case.

Then check if your BIOS on the problematic PC needs updating, if you have all necessary USB drivers and clean the OS from viruses, malware, do a Disk Clean up.

Post back!

Hello everyone!
I am making backup from my videos and pdf's etc and now when i was trying to again access on folder it claims that it is not accessible. Any help on why and how this has happened and how i will fix it?

I had previously converted external hard drive to ntfs form from fat32 so i think i might have problem on rights. Folder information does not show any files or subfolders

A:external flash hard drive: I:\folder is not accessible

Put the flash back into the system where you made the backup and make sure it is still viable. You may have to re-format the stick, then copy the videos over again.

there is a reason why those flash sticks some formatted fat32, sometimes they cant hack NTFS. Best thing to do is format the stick on the system where you are going to be putting the copies, then go back and make the backup on the original puter.

Now the I get this error when I hook it back up to my XP machine.
x:\ is not accessible. the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

I ran a check disk and it fixed an error under xp. The drive letter shows up but the drive size shows 0kb.

When I hook the drive back up to Vista it is perfectly normal.

It isn't assigned a drive letter in Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management, and the only available options on the context menu are 'Delete Volume...' and 'Help'. I also can't seem to see it under Diskpart via admin command prompt.

* Inputting 'Seagate 100662969' (the model number on the HDD cradle) into Google brings up this model on the Seagate site.

Many thanks!

Here is my situation - PC running Windows XP Professional.

My friends sends me a link which eventually leads to it being a trojan horse that infects my computer. It completely takes over, disabling all my anti virus, not allowing me to run or install any type of anti virus, and even blocking websites that offer virus removal help (re-routing of IP). In an effort to fix my computer, I used the windows CD and tried to use the repair and recovery mode to reinstall windows. Now the computer just hangs and nothing can be done.

The good thing is that I can still access my harddrive as an external on another computer via sata usb cables. My question is whether there is a way for me to try and fix the boot and startup files on my computer so that I can salvage my computer and fix it the right way? Thanks so much and happy thanksgiving!

Hello, I am having issues with my external hard drive. I cannot access the drive from computer or device manager. I do see the icon for the drive listed but any left or right-click freezes explorer. The drive is a 1TB Iomega USB drive. I have tried to run chkdsk on it but it will not run. I do not have access to another computer at this time to see if the drive works elsewhere.

2 things : I have gotten a popup on startup that I need to reformat the drive to be able to use it AND I have also seen the cyclic redudancy check error box. After searching for answers I believe the problem may have been caused by 1 or more instances of power loss to drive while connected to my desktop pc.

Any help retrieving my files & photos would be greatly appreciated!

A:External HDD inaccessible, incorrect parameter

Physically, I think your HDD is stuffed. Sad to say.
Bad sectors are often a sign that the drive is about to completely fail. Bad sectors are unrepairable so it will make your HDD considerably smaller in Volume.

There is software out there that can claim to fix some bad sectors, but I would put my money to a new HDD.

My external 3T disk runs fine on Windows 7.

When I connected (first time) to my Windows 8.1 desktop (EFI/EUFI BIOS) it detects the drive but gets parameter incorrect msg. In the System eventlog there were many entries with error Event ID 51. Windows didn't stop trying to access the disk.

PC has Asus Z97 Pro MB. The disk has just 1 big data partition. I have no clue.

A:External 3T disk gets parameter incorrect msg

Since you were running Windows 7, possibly the drive was set up using the Legacy (MBR) configuration and some software was used to make all 3 TB accessible. If you did not do that, possibly the drive came configured using software to make it all accessible.

If this is the situation, is there any way for you to save your date and convert the drive to GPT, or reinstall the software originally used to make it accessible? On a large drive, only 2.2 GB is accessible using the Legacy configuration unless something is used to make it accessible.
