Increasing laptop memory and replacing LCD screen

Q: Increasing laptop memory and replacing LCD screen

I'm planning to fix up this laptop soon. I need to buy 2 x 2gb for the ram and a new LCD screen for it. I plan to get a new HDD for it sometime next year. What do I need to know for buying this ram stuff and if there would be a program that would give me the extra info about it that I may need...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Read the manual. If there is no manual then do a search for the make and model and you should be able to find the manual in PFD format. It should tell you everything you know.

How old is the system and what is the make and model?

Unless there is an option somewhere in the bios to increase it, you're stuck with what it has. Even if you can increase it, it won't help much with games,

A:Need help replacing laptop screen

Welcome to the forum! Have you already ordered/received the new screen? If not, search Google for a replacement screen. It is not difficult to replace the screen. I advise that you search for instructions on how to replace a screen for your model. The tricky part is removing the bezel from around the screen without damaging it. Once that is done, the screen can be removed pretty easily. It is held in place by several screws. You must also carefully disconnect the ribbon connector to the motherboard & sometimes the antenna connector before removal.

Hello

Practising my swing and put a bat through my new laptop screen (compaq m2000, 15in) and now it dosen't want to work. Don't make em like they used too...

Is this possible to replace myself??? I'm confident inside a PC, but never had the opportunity to take apart a laptop.

thanks in advance for any advice forthcoming.

A:Replacing a Laptop screen??

you could probably do it, the problem is getting hold of another screen to put in there.. I had a friend that once had a laptop problem. we took it apart and all that there was for the screen to come off were a few screws and remove one or 2 cables... if you get another screen, it would be quite easily done... :grinthumb

Hey, a friend of mine bought an old laptop off ebay and the screen has those black, dead spots on it so he bought an unused screen and asked me to hook it up for him. The new screen is a slightly different model, but it's in the same series and looks identical. All the connections fit perfectly and the screen powers up (or at least the back light turns on) but that's about it. There's no picture. So I don't know if it's because the screens aren't compatible or if I need to do something else to it. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

A:help replacing laptop screen

While they "look the same", there could be any number of differences. This is why you need to truly use the "identical" model for replacement.

Basically I stepped on my laptop screen, and half of the screen is all cracked and has black and white blobs all over it. I'm assuming that I just broke the LCD screen so all I have to do is buy a new LCD screen and replace it.

It's a Toshiba Satellite a100

A:Replacing Laptop Screen

Im not 100% sure how easy it is to replace a laptop screen ( as they use a relatively complex pin system to transfer video signals.) What are the specs on the laptop? A new computer with better specs might be a better option.

I took the screen off of my laptop and now I have two wires that I do not know where they connect to. They are gold in color and very tiny. I hope there is someone out there who can help me.

A:Replacing screen on laptop

They're probably the antenna leads for the wifi, the antenna is in the lid.

Of course, the exact make and model of laptop would be really useful here.

Hi

I've got a Sony Vaio Laptop PCG-FX602 with a cracked screen. I've managed to get another screen to replace it with but am having trouble getting the cracked one out.

I've removed all the screws i can see and can get the one side out (on the left as you look at it) but on the other side it seems as though i've got to take the keyboard and the dvd/cdrw drive out just to remove one hinge.

I've also tried just opening the bezel and replacing the lcd screen that way but that seems stuck on as well and i'm trying not to break any of the plastic.

If anyone could help me i'd be grateful.

Excluding the laptop screen itself, what is the normal fee to get it replaced labor wise?

Thanks

A:labor charge for replacing a laptop screen

Somewhere around 1-2 hours, depending on the make and model. Fee depends on the shop you take it to, they set their own per hour labor rate.

A reputable shop should be able to quote it over the phone if you give them the make and model of the laptop.

Well, the wireless antenna is in the lid of the laptop, so if you screwed those up, it would explain wireless issues. You may have to pop the top and check the wiring.

Windows refuses to boot.  It tires twice and then gives the option to try again or try repair.  Repair as usual is useless and cannot repair anything.  It reports that a recent hardware change may be responsible.

This is ridiculous.  Windows should not have any way of even knowing the screen has been replaced.  Just the screen and assembly was replaced no chips or firmware was touched.  Windows should not even be able to know or interfere in any way

How do I get windows to boot?  DO NOT TELL ME TO USE A BOOT DISK.  THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BOOT DISKS ANYMORE.

I would appreciate if someone could give some useful information.

Hello All,
I have Dell Laptop XPS 13 L322X (Service Tag: CC2YVW1).  I am using a an external Monitor  since the screen is flickering with vertical lines and ghosting colors. I updated the Bios and the video driver, and tried the diagnostic mode (Power on and the D key...et) without success.

I just bought a  new screen compatible replacement but the I cant boot  using the new screen and  am encountering the 8 beeps sound. I tried to boot with the external monitor and using the powering the laptop with the D key, the new laptop screen started to switch colors four times and go back the beeping sound.

I tried also to disconnect the Battery and the Ac power  and to hold down the power to empty the capacitors left stored energy without success.
Thank you in advance for your help,

A:Dell Laptop XPS 13 L322X: 8 Beeps boot after replacing the screen

Hi Saladine,
Thanks for writing to us.
Looks to be a DOA (dead on arrival) screen. usually 8 beeps indicate either the problem with screen or with the video card, sometimes both.
Aren't you getting display on external monitor with the new screen attached. if no, then put back the old LCD again and try. This will give a clear picture if its the new LCD or some other hardware.

Open capacity on my computer is down to 12%. Total capacity is 14.0gb. I have done all of the basic actions like checkdisk and defrag. Also eliminated many files and applications I no longer use. There is not much left on the C:drive to cause that usage to be so high. Eliminated all anti-virus and firewall. The biggest memory users I have now are Microsoft Office products and AOL. What else can I do to clean up the C:drive from memory usage?

I'm have a Compaq Presario 2596US notebook running Windows XP.

It uses DDR333 pc2700 sodimm. I had a 256mb and a 512mb chip installed, and had 768 total ram. I ordered a 1gb chip (transcend, from newegg), and the laptop won't recognize it.

I've tried running the 512 and the 1gb chip, the 256 and the 1gb chip, and the 1gb chip alone. With either of the smaller chips installed plus the 1gb chip, the system memory is equal to the smaller chip. With just the 1gb chip installed (tried both sockets), the laptop won't boot.... just spins out on the 'ol black screen of death...

Max memory for this computer is listed at 1024 mb - is there any way to increase that?

Why won't the new 1gb chip work by itself? Is each socket limited to 512mb? Any way to change that?

Hi guys,

I have an asus k550 ldv and its configurations are as follows:-
Processor: i7 2.7Ghz
Graphics: Nvidia 820M 2gb
Ram: 4gb ddr3l 1600Mhz
Hard-disk: 1Tb
Expandability: 1 ram slot(upto 4gb)

My question is, firstly, if i need to put 4 gb ddr3 or ddr3l in the extra slot, and secondly, can i put 4 gb in the extra slot and then somehow dedicate 2gb of it to the graphics card, thus getting a configuration of ram:6gb and graphics:4gb.

I would appreciate a helpful reply to my query.

Thanks

A:increasing graphics memory

You can't, the video memory is dedicated not shared on the 820M, further there is no point as the 820M is an entry level GPU and doesn't need 2GB of RAM let alone more.

If you go to a site such as Crucial.com you can see and buy the exact compatible RAM for the laptop.

A:Increasing Virtual Memory

Go to start/My Computer/Right click on it and pick properties/click on the advanced tab/ click on the settings button in Virtual Settings/click advanced tab/click change button in the virtual memory section/set to custom size and increase initial and maximum to above 768/click set/okay out of all boxes back to desktop.

Remember Virtual memory uses HDD space and is MUCH slower than RAM so this is only a temporary fix and won't help if you have a full HDD already. My suggestion is look for and buy more ram.

A:Increasing memory on video card?

If your PC is using on-board graphics (or in rare cases a discreet card) you can allocate additional system memory (in some cases) for the video card but I don't think that will solve your issue.

You can certainly replace the video card or add additional system memory to help improve game performance.

It's important to know what size power supply you're dealing with although lower end video cards don't require much power and you'd need to know if you PC requires a low-profile card.

Is it a slim case?

What's your budget for a video card upgrade?

Hi,
I've an Intel Celeron 1.7 GHz with Intel 845 GL based ASUS M/B,256 MB RAM and Windows 98 Second edition installed.

Now the i845GL chipset provides for 8 MB shared graphics memory.

Is it possible to increase the shared memory since I've lots of RAM?

Thanks.

A:Increasing Virtual Memory Question

I had the same question/issue a little while ago. The consensus was that it's not possible to use Virtual Memory to extend your video memory.

I'm a little confused as to the error you're getting, though. According to the good people at Blizzard, WOW should run fine with the amount of video memory you currently have. Can you give some more details as to the error(s) you're getting?

I mean, your card has 256MB of video RAM, right? 256MB is actually quite good for video cards (though certainly not top-of-the-line.) For example, my video card (an ATI Radeon x300) has only 128MB but runs most games just fine (though I've never tried WoW on it).

After opening my resource monitor just after a reboot I show almost all non-used memory as quot free quot and very little as standby If I sit there and watch it standby steadily Steadily Memory Standby Increasing grows as free diminishes until there is very little free memory left I realize that in theory standby memory will be released when more is needed however for some applications this does not appear to be the case Not sure if specifics matter but I'm using an editor and a graphics enhancer for an old game quot Morrowind quot Standby Memory Steadily Increasing but the graphics enhancer is relatively new When running these programs though not the game itself when free space runs out but there is still loads of standby available the programs crash and windows does not reallocate from standby to free I tried disabling Superfetch but this did nothing The standby memory still steadily increases the longer the machine is on making these programs only useable for a limited time after a reboot Is there a way to completely disable standby memory allocation I really only use this computer for playing editing games and browsing the internet I have a separate computer for work and practical purposes If it were totally turned off would this make it impossible to put the computer to quot sleep quot

A:Standby Memory Steadily Increasing

Standby memory is in use but can be quickly reassigned as needed. A high value for this is a good thing. Free memory is doing nothing and this value should be low. The ideal would be zero all the time but computer science hasn't reached that level yet.

When an application or system process needs memory the memory manager first looks to the free list. When this cannot meet the need the memory manager goes to the standby list.

It is not possible to disable the standby list. If this were somehow done it would have a serious negative impact on performance.

Sorry I don't have a solution for your problem. But I do think you are looking in the wrong place.

A:Memory usage constantly increasing

This could be a memory leak.

Use the Task Manager to see what programs are using your hdd.

1)  Right click on the Taskbar to open the Task Manager.

2)  Click on the Performance tab.

3)  Click on the Resource Monitor button, then click on the Disk tab.

4)  When the Process with Disk Activity opens you will be able to see which programs are accessing your hdd.  Watch to see if there is a process whose usage increases.  If you find one, post it back here.

Hi,

I'm a noob in this processes and services thing. But recently, I realised my laptop is getting hotter and the fan is running non-stop.

When I check my processes, 1 of the svchost.exe is running at more than 129,500K is it keeps increasing. I realised that even when I startup my laptop for a while and don't open anything its already using a lot of memory. I believe that the increase in temperature of my laptop may be the problem of the svchost.eve.

Is there anything I can do to reduce the memory of the svchost.exe?
I want to close some services under this process but I'm not sure what to close.

I've attached the printscreen of the svchost.exe process the services under the svchost.eve.

I have Windows XP Pro, SP2 installed on a Dell Inspiron 8100 notebook (866mHz). I have a 60G hard drive, but only 256MB of memory.

I often receive messages about low virtual memory. How can I increase memory on my system without adding more memory? I know memory is cheap, but I have not run into any for my particular notebook.

My paging file is currently set at 768MB. Are any other settings available to increase the speed of my computer?

Thanks!

Hey guys.
I know how to increase the virtual memory of a drive(Control Panel\System\Advanced\Performance - Settings\Advanced\Virtual Memory - Change)
But the thing is in what drive do i allot this excess memory? I heard that you should do it only on drive C. But what if my game is on drive D? should i give Drive D a large amount of memory?

And in the case of appointing a large amount of Virtual Memory to one drive, can i leave the other one with only 1GB(or maybe 2GB) ram?

Thank you.

A:[SOLVED] Increasing Virtual Memory.....But where?

Virtual memory is a resource that applies to the system as a whole not to a specific drives. You can move/set the location of the pagefile if you wanted to.

In almost all cases it's best to allow Windows to manage virtual memory.

What issue are you having?

Hello,

I'm running Windows XP (don't know which service pack). I'm also running AOL 9.0. I know that AOL isn't in vogue anymore, but it does ok for me. My problem is that when AOL launches, it starts running in about 27 meg or so. But then, and without me doing anything, it just continues to increase memory size and after awhile, when I check Taskmanager, it's typically using over 100 meg. By this time, I can usually hear the internal fan running faster, and at that point, I typically have to kill the process and restart it. I've reloaded the AOL software, but that doesn't help.

I don't understand this, and I hope that someone can help me with it. Why would ANY software launch in one amount of memory, then continuously increase its usage of memory, especially without anyone interacting with the software?

Thanks,
Louis

A:Why is my process constantly increasing memory usage?

Okay hate to say it, but AOL is going to be the problem. Yes it's "comfy" etc... but it's also bloaty, slow and full of gunk that hawgs up the System Resources. When I do a computer, I uninstall every single thing that has the letters "A", "O", and "L" in them, and make the customer put effort and time into slowing their system back down to what it was when they first gave it to me.

It was a good question, as to why a software would continuously increase it's size, etc... and I haven't the technical answer, but in general it simply a matter of who is using your computer, and for what purposes. It's a philosophical question that I think everyone should consider. There are TONS of "freeware" programs (Google, Adobe, Java, etc...) that "do things" we know about and like, but they also "do things" we don't know about and wouldn't like if we knew what it was that they were doing.

Such as hawging up System Resources while constantly "updating" for no reason that benefits (me) the User. I make a point of deleting almost all "updaters" from the registry of every computer I work on, and no one has ever complained. (However, iTunes will make a great fuss and refuse to work if you kill it's "updaters".)

For no reason other than it is coercing you to allow it's useless (to you) existance to continue on your computer. If you remove it, iTunes will stop working as punishment. What does it do ? Why does it exist ?

Who owns your computer ?

The phrase is, "When someone else controls your computer, it's someone else's computer and not yours." I call that theft of my Computer Resources, and the tiny fine-print of the EULA is called fraud and/or deceptive trade practices in every other environment except computer software.

A:Paged Pool memory constantly increasing

Hello BuG,

With 32 GB of RAM installed, it's not unusual for your page file to get just as large.

If you like, you could use step 11 in the tutorial below to specify a minimum and maximum page file size for your C: drive to prevent it from getting larger on it's own. If you get a low memory or out of memory error afterwards while running Windows, then it means that you will need to increase the size of the page file until you stop getting the error.

If you have plenty of hard drive space, then it is recommended to leave the page file to be system managed though.

Hope this helps,

A:Increasing video memory on Compaq NX6325?

You'll need a new video card. Memory is built in to the graphics card and can't be changed.

But Vista will run on almost any video card. I have it installed on several machines with unsupported cards and it runs fine. All you lose is the Aero affect, which I often turn off anyway because it is such a CPU hog.

I have a Toshiba Satelite l645D and when I go to my ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 settings it says it has a total of 1405 available graphics memory, but only 256 Video memory is dedicated... My laptop has plenty of RAM to give to the video card, and when I go to the BIOS theres no option for increasing the video ram whatsoever... Is there any way to do this?

Hi Sempurna !

In the task manager go to the processes tab => view => select columns and tick paged pool, non-paged pool and virtual memory. Check whether the memory leak appears there. If it does, tell us which process is in cause.

A:Possibility of increasing memory for Rhino modelling software

IMO this system is underpowered for this use. I'd expect that you'll have further problems even if you fix this problem. I would suggest upgrading to a 64 bit operating system and at least 4 gB of RAM.

Several things to try tho' - first, close all open programs, close everything in the system tray (by the clock), then kill off any unneeded processes in Task Manager...Processes tab. Then run the Rhino program and see if you get the same error.

If so, then try the steps above in Safe Mode.

Hi all,

I've upgraded my PC and reinstalled the OS; spec shown below. The only difference is that now, my OS is on an SSD drive (OCZ Petrol).

However, I note that my memory usage is constantly increasing; even with only background apps running, I was up to 7GB. When I check Task Manager, I see that the "System" process's "Handles" count is constantly increasing. As I speak, it's almost at 1,000,000; last night I saw it get up to 4,000,000.

Any help at troubleshooting this appreciated,

P.

A:Memory & System Handle count constantly increasing

If it's "SYSTEM", that would indicate something running in kernel mode. Obviously that would mean the Windows kernel itself and it's supporting files, kernel-mode (boot-critical) drivers (like chipset/RAID drivers), and filesystem filter drivers (antivirus/antimalware, 3rd party firewall, etc). Given that Windows on it's own doesn't do this, we can probably safely rule out the Windows kernel and it's drivers. That leaves us with what's left installed on the box - perhaps we can start with that. What (if anything) do you have installed for firewall, antivirus/antimalware, etc. on the computer?

I recently upgraded my Win 7 64-bit system with the following:

AMD Phenom II 720 ( tri-core) to an AMD FX-4300 ( quad core )

Increase memory from 4 GB Kingston DDR2-800 to 8 GB Kingston DDR3 -1333

Mobo replaced with new ASUS M5A97 R2.0 ( AM3+ socket )

Retained the GeForce GTX 550-TI GPU and Westen Digital Black SATA-6.0 gb/s 500 GB HDD.

When I ran the Windows Experience Index after the upgraded, my CPU index went up ( from 6.7 to 7.3 ), but the memory index went down ( from 7.5 to 7.3 ). I'm puzzled how doubling of RAM, especially with slightly faster DDR3 ) could cause the index to go down. I've checked the RAM with CPUID and it shows running at the correct frequency, timings, voltages, and running in dual channel mode.

Has anyone had the same experience and why would this happen??

I get the BSOD with increasing frequency, usually when opening new tabs or websites. Firefox has been crashing on a fairly regular basis as well without providing details. I have also noticed graphics artifacts appearing now and again (outlines of screens remaining after closing them, active title bar different color, Aero sometimes stops working until I restart).

I have attached the diagnostic results, which should include all my system info. Additionally, I ran memtest86, which logged more than 1 million errors. I have 12gb memory and all of the errors occurred when testing the 8192m-10G memory. So I think I have a memory problem, but I was told BSOD is often software related and I should have my dump files, drivers, etc, looked at through the diagnostic before replacing memory sticks.

Thanks in advance for your help and let me know what other info I can provide.

I posted about a week ago about some hardware problems and it's seemingly my memory because I'm back with my two old sticks and nothing else and everything seems to be running the same as before. So I have a situation whether I should just refund my two old sticks or replace them with the same two. I really want 8GB of memory because I render videos and soon I'll be rendering 3D animation so I feel like I could make use of it. If I refund them should I try other memory (I could probably get four sticks of some other memory)? Might that be the problem or could the two sticks just be defective?

Here's the memory I'm talking about.

hope u all help me.

After a couple year's use you should completely discharge and recharge it once a month.
Don't keep the charger plugged in all the time but use battery power and charge it when it's low.

Is it possible this is a virus?

I am finally getting the nerve to upgrade the memory on my PC. But, I have a few questions before I actually take the final steps. My questions are going to be pretty lame to most.

I currently have 128MB, with 2 total slots. My PC is capable of 512MB. Logically, I think I should take out my 128MB and replace with 2- 256MB, in order to achieve the full 512MB. But I don't want to lose anything I have stored in my hard drive. Is this going to be a problem?

I have a Compaq Presario 4400.

I have a HTPC at home, hooked up to a 1080p TV at 1920x1080. Because I sit 10 feet from my TV, I needed to increase the text DPI to 150% so I can see what's on the screen. However, I found that increasing the DPI is just simply reducing the screen resolution to 1280x720, and then enlarged to 1920x1080 so everything is bigger.

I know this is true because many program state that as my resolution. Full screen YouTube videos automatically go to 720p instead of 1080p (unless I disable DPI scaling for Chrome, which makes my text small again). There is a dramatic decrease in detail (1080 -> 720) when watching Blu-rays with 150% DPI because the resolution is lowered by DPI scaling. Pictures in browsers are enlarged and not shown at the original resolution.

DPI scaling is pointless if it just reduces resolution. Is there a fix for this, or is DPI scaling just this poorly implemented in Windows 7?

Thanks.

A:Why is increasing DPI just decreasing my screen resolution?

DPI scaling doesn't lower the resolution and scale it up, if it did the UI would be pixelated. The DPI scaling in Windows 7 is not poorly implemented, it is the applications that are poorly taking into account different DPI scales. A properly written application that takes DPI into account would not suffer the same issues.

I have finished installing win2000 professional on my pc, using a nec multisync 97f monitor, but am having trouble increasing the screen area. It currently displays correctly at 1024x768. However, whenever I try to increase it, the screen area gets chopped... about 1-2 inches of area on the top and bottom are gone. If I move the mouse to the top portion, it scrolls the contents of the display down so that I can see what is being chopped above, but of course that just hides more of the lower portion (and visa versa).

Anyone have any idea what's going on here?

Thanks for any help

If you disable the onboard video thru the BIOS, it should not take a memory allocation (shared memory request) any longer.

Install the PCI card, make sure its driver's load correctly, and you should be good to go.

There is no reason that I can imagine that increasing the color depth should have an adverse effect. It might have an effect (minor) on battery life when you're running, since there's more processing for the higher setting, but it sure shouldn't do what you described.

Hello everyone I have little to no experience with computers. I replaced my broken laptop screen with a new one online. The screen is only working in safe mode. When I plug it in to a television via HDMI it is good to go. I would deeply appreciate any help with this.

Laptop is a Sony Vaio VPCCB25FX
Old screen is LP 156WF1 (TL)(C1)
New screen is LP156WF1 (TL)(C2)
It is up to date with drivers. I have no clue how to fijx this

A:Vaio Screen only works in Safe mode after replacing old broken screen

If the screen in working in the bios and safe mode, then the screen is indeed working.

If you boot into safe mode with networking, can you redownload the display adapter driver?

You could also try Clean Install Windows 7

I have a Compaq Presario C300. Somehow the screen cracked and of course was not under warranty. I purchased a replacement screen online and followed the directions to replace. It was relatively simple, however, now when I boot up the computer, the backlight comes on for the whole screen, but shows up blank. Did I just not fully connect something? Is there something simple I can check before I bring the whole darn thing in for service anyway? This is what I was trying to avoid in the first place. The whole laptop was only 800 and the new replacement screen was $199 (as opposed to the quote for $450 I got to have it replaced).

Anyone have any ideas I can try?

A:Replacing Compaq Presario C300 LCD Screen: blank screen now

You have to make sure you bought right screen for your laptop. Check your connection cable hasn't any damage on it. If it still shows only blank screen, i think not coming enough power for screen (wrong screen).

I've got a 3 year old HP pavilion N5150 notebook and recently it's been slowing down a lot, freezing a lot, and making weird noises. Then it wouldn't boot up at all. So I reinstalled WinME using the rescue disk it came with and it worked fine for a few hours. Then programs and drivers I loaded just a little while ago disappeared and now I get 3 errors about missing components every time I turn it on. So now I think it might be a hard drive problem. So my questions are:

1. Do you think the hard drive's the problem?
2. Is the hard drive replaceable?
3. If it is, where can I buy a replacement?

Hi,
I have a 3 yr old HP dv5200 tx laptop. It has a 100 GB HDD (4200rpm) ATA-5.

I want to upgrade it to a Seagate Momentus 500 GB 5400 rpm HDD SATA-300. Will this be compatible? I did read somewhere that SATA is backward compatible, but I am not too sure.

And more importantly, if such a HDD IS compatible, what is the best way to clone my current HDD in a relatively easy way (My knowledge level is OK with computers, just cant do anything overly complicated)? I am left with only this option because I dont have my Windows CDs, and my HP PC Recovery is corrupted. I cannot do a clean install of XP without it.

Hi there. I have an Inspiron 1100 running Windows XP SP2, a basic Intel Celeron 2.4Ghz CPU, and only 254MB of RAM. I would like to replace my ram with better, faster ram. I have 2 128MB chips, and I'd like to simply buy 2 more chips and pop em in. With the DxDiag attached, what are some good options? Is it possible to get 1GB RAM chips, or is 1GB the max I can get in a run-of-the-mill Dell Inspiron, considering the standard motherboard and such?

A:Replacing RAM in a laptop

Hi,
This is according to crucial:
http://www.crucial.com/store/listpar...l=Dell&cat=RAM

You will need 2 (512MB) sticks of DDR PC2700, the MAX this board will hold (1GB).

Lenovo ThinkPad 14.1" Dual-Core i5 Laptop

A:Replacing my laptop

youve asked a bit of an open ended question. it soley depends what you want to use it for. for ?300 its fairly cheap considering it contains a core i5 processor. but if you intend to play games or do heavy video editing its not worth it as youd need alot more ummph.
lenovo make great laptops but their quality tends to lack in their cheaper models. had a fair few to fix where the outer case has cracked or the case clips have snapped ect. depends how much it will travel

I got an HP laptop last year pre-installed with Windows 8 and I want to install a new HDD. How do I go about doing this and not losing any files? So far all I know to do is to create a system disc from the recovery manager, and then a recovery file on an external drive. Does this cover personal files or do I need to back those up separately? If there's a step-by-step guide out there I'd greatly appreciate it if I could be pointed to it!

Thanks a lot!

I'm going to be replacing my old laptop sometime soon, and I'm looking into the following laptops in particular -

Acer Aspire 5920G (139029 on ebuyer)
Asus X50SL (144182 on ebuyer)
Dell Studio 15

I was wondering if there's anything else I should be looking at for that sort of price range (£450-£550), and also which of those'd be the best one to go for.

Hi all If any of you are upgrading the HDD in a laptop or getting a new one -- DON'T throw the old HDD away For around USD you can buy an enclosure which will convert the old HDD into a very small portable self powered USB external drive Now what I do with these is to use them for backing up OS'es whether from a laptop or a workstation and then put these away A GB drive even can store several backups on it -- especially if you have and you should have a separate replacing HDD or Laptop old the a Upgrading - Use OS partition from data partitions Even a largish W installation complete with Office full version Adobe Upgrading or replacing a Laptop - Use the old HDD suite CS etc will backup to around a GB file using a backup program with decent compression You don't have to worry about speed or performance of these -- Upgrading or replacing a Laptop - Use the old HDD they are simply being used for storing my OS and Virtual OS'es backups I've got of these - and its far far easier storing these than having zillions of CD's around the place Even an old or GB laptop drive Upgrading or replacing a Laptop - Use the old HDD will be useful for this purpose especially a typical OS backup will be normally around GB with a decent backup program giving good lossless compression You can NEVER have too much backup BTW You can also use these for offline backup of critical files some music etc etc Don't chuck away perfectly good hardware which might save you loads of time in an emergency restore data recovery operation Removing a HDD from a laptop is very very simple --all you need to know is how to use a screwdriver -- nothing else required Cheers jimbo

I did this when I went down the SSD route for my laptop. I stuck the old 500GB drive into a $20 (it had eSATA) enclosure and anything large I can put on there.

As title says "consider replacing your battery"

From last 2 days when i installed a new windows 7 i am encountering a problem with my battery.

The battery icon at the right hand side bottom displays a cross sign on it which also says "Plugged in Charging, consider replacing your battery"
Before installing the windows my battery was working perfectly with approximately 1 hour backup....really cant understand what went wrong suddenly and now i am getting this warning.
Anyone encountered the same issue or is there any measures to be taken to rectify this ??
Your answers/suggestions are highly appreciated and i would be very thankful..

A:Laptop says consider replacing your battery?

In the bios or boot menu look for a battery reset or conditioning feature. It takes a good long time but this can make the lappy and it's battery realign it's discharge meter and give you back a true reading.

A:replacing laptop battery-mfg or other

Buying from a different company will end your warranty if you still have one.

But otherwise, if you can find one that fits from another company, it may save you money. If it is designed for that machine, it will work no matter who made it.

Hi, I have an HP g42-415dx laptop with Windows 7 64 bit and AMD Dual-Core Athlon II P340 which I would like to replace for a faster AMD Quad-Core Phenom II P960 from e-Bay.

List of what both processors have in common: THEY ARE BOTH 25 TDP WATTS
--Core Name: Champlain
--Platform Name: Danube
--Microarchitechture: K10
--Technology: 45nm
--Socket: Socket S1 (S1g4)

The only differences include frequency, bus speed, L1 and L2 caches, cores and names.

Can I replace it?
Can I use the old fan/heatsink?
Is there any compatible CPU better than the p960 that can be used instead?
