I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So I plugged a mac keyboard into my pc laptop and now ....

Some of the keys in my laptop keyboard work and some end up typing something completely different than what they are.

Anyone know how to fix this? I googled for a solution and couldn't find any results

Basically withing five minutes of any reboot, I start experiencing the following:

-Mouse scroller zooms in/out of webpages instead of scrolling
-Start menu randomly appears and disappears
-When I type on the keyboard, Hot Key commands appear

I have run combofix and malware but they didn't appear to find anything. I also removed the keypad and cleaned the contacts and the result was the same. Its weird because if I reboot everything is fine for 2 to 5 minutes but then backed to screwed up.

I have a HP dv3z-1000, using windows 7 32-bit

Thanks for taking the time to try and help me.

Hello all,

I am not sure if it is a hardware problem or software, so forgive me if I placed in the wrong forum.

I bought my Acer TravelMate 360 online, re-install XP because it's run in German's version.

I first detected the problem when I keyed in the CD key, the Q did not work, I then plug the normal PS/2 keyboard in in order to continue with the installation, hoping it'll fit itself once the OS' in place.

But no! Following are keys do not working: Q, A, S, D, X, C. Except Z & W intermitten

Thank you for your opinions in advance

Hi Whirlwind

Try booting up from a Dos or windows98 boot disk to a DOS prompt and see if you can type correctly there. If not you probably have hardware problems. Does your external keyboard work ok on on a different system?

Hi

I have a new Toshiba laptop with a keyboard problem. Where the @ sign is supposed to go, it is accessed through the " (quotation) key and visa versa.

I removed the keyboard under 'devices' and the computer found and installed the keyboard as new hardware but it still has the same problem.

Any ideas of what I should do??

Thanks!!!

Hi All,

Just recently, my keyboard stopped working in windows and and as a result, the system slows down the locks up. The Keyboard does work in the bios or when I go to safe mode but the computer locks up when it tries to load drivers for safe mode. I Just formatted c: drive and the keyboard doesn't work when trying to setup windows and it locks up when I skip the setup part where you put in computer description. The power button is also messed up and won't restart.

I'm just curious as to what most likely is the problem (I figure its a motherboard issue) before I head off and take it into a repair shop. Has anyone had this happen to them?

A:Laptop Keyboard problem

OS's won't function without the keyboard on boot up. More than likely it's a keyboard issue. Swap it out. Jazz

I have a Compaq Evo N1000C laptop. Running Windows XP. Every once in awhile the keys on the right side from the u, k, m and all keys to their right y will print the number or symbol above the letter key. I believe it has something to do with "Fn". What does "Fn" stand for? And how do I unlock without rebooting when this happens? All other keys work normally. Thanks Chuck

The Fn is the function key-it allows advanced fuctions when pressed usually in tandem with another key.

Hi guys (and gals)

Ok heres the problem, I recently got a microsoft digital media pro usb keyboard and hook it up to my toshiba satellite a75-209 laptop. I had to install intellitype (dled latest 6.1) and use the special features.

The really annoying problem is that when i try and use my laptop keypad there is a character mismatch. For instance when i hit the keys J K L i get 1 2 3. Someone said i need to reinstall the toshiba keypad drivers. Only problem is i dont know if it came with a cd and i can not find where to download the driver on toshiba's web site.

Do you guys think that will fix it?
What do you think will?
Where can i find the keypad driver?

Thanks alot for your time,

and so on, some keys dont do anything some will do volume up/down etc. Basically they are all over the place.
This is what I have done to correct the problem.
checked that the correct UK layout keyboard was installed
deleted then reinstalled the driver
done virus and malware scans
replaced the keyboard with a new one

Nothing has fixed the problem. If I plug in an external keyboard this works fine.

OK, I'll probably have to send my notebook in for repairs, but I want to check all options first. Had a little spill onto my keyboard. Water. Now I can only use the power button. If I press any other button, including the media control buttons n the front, the computer shuts down. Last nite I could use a few buttons, but now none, they have become hair-trigger power buttons. Is there anything I can do before taking advantage of my warranty?

PS: I am using onscreen keyboard

A:Laptop Keyboard Problem

Your warranty may not cover a spill on the keyboard, unless you have accidental damage protection. If it were a cell phone you spilled on I'd suggest putting it in a bowl of uncooked rice...but it's not, so I'm not sure what you could do besides let it air out, upside down.

So the internal keyboard is completely disconnected? If it isn't you should disconnect it.

Did any liquid spill deeper into the laptop than just the keyboard?

Have you tried another USB keyboard? Windows may have got hung up installing the drivers/software for that keyboard. A different brand would be preferable and give it a few minutes to install the drivers after booting.

Hey,
Earlier today I bought a Micron TransPort GX+ with a P3 800 mhz processor, 320 mb ram, 20 gb hdd at a yard sale for $5. I got it home, and set it up. Win Xp loaded sucessfully. I opened MS Word and started to type a sentance, but the keys were all messed up. For example, when I press "T" it displays "T6Y" on the screen. It does similar things with other random keys. This is not only in MS Word, but all other programs that you type in. I think that reinstalling XP may solve the problem, but first, does anybody have any suggestions?

A:Micron laptop keyboard problem

Does not sound like a software problem, Try holding it upside down and brush between the keys with a small paint brush and then use a can of air to blow it out. Reinstalling the OS is free, so probably the next thing to try. A new keyboard is not likely to be available, but you could try the Micron website.

That indicates either a faulty key or that the electronics has failed. Either way, there is not much you can do after having checked for a stuck key.

My friend received a new laptop running windows 8 (acer v5-471).

When the 'w' key is pressed it brings up the search page With settings filter selected (e.g apps, settings, file filters) when shift + w is pressed it prints 'W'.
All other keys work as expected, the keyboard layout is set correctly and no keys are stuck (easy to tell as its backlighted)

Any ideas?

Thanks Rob

Edit: the WindoWs key seems to do the same thing :\

EDIT: Was a hardware problem and the laptop has been returned. Tried a linux live cd and the problem persisted.

Maybe the Keyboard is bad, it does this no matter what program you are in? What if you are typing something and it requires the letter "w"?

Maybe something as simple as an added space that isnt seen. try erasing it and re-entering it.

MY DELL LATITUDE LAPTOP has a keyboard problem. THe keys on the left hand side seem to operate properly., however the keys on the right hand side of the keyboard produce different letters/numbes than the key denotes. For example the J key produces a number 1, the O key makes the number 8, etc. THus I cannot use notepad or any function that requires the keys pretty much on the center right of the keyboard, the , :." keys all seem to operate fine as do all the keys on the left hand side. Any cure for this?

A:Keyboard Problem With Dell Laptop

It seems you have the Num Luck or the Function keys turned on. You'll probably need to dig out the manual and find out how to disable it. I assume you've reboot the computer? If so there's a software application that can lock these keys into their alternate configuration. Check the DELL accesories for programs/utilities that control this.

Greetings Forum, I have a Sony VGN-FZ140E laptop. Tonight for some reason certain keys stopped working. r, y 0 have stopped working all together (I am resorting to the on-screen keyboard). Occasionally other keys dont wok which makes me think this is a software problem rather than a hardware one. I tried uninstalling the keyboard via the device manager and letting windows reinstalling it but that didnt work. I am looking for some alternative cures/help if there are some. Meat, On an older laptop, the backlights are most likely burning out. Here an install link
http://www.lcdpart.com/doc/ccflinstallation.html

If you replace the keyboard, and still has the problem, it a motherboard issue. Then you have to use an external.

My Mom has a Dell Inspiron 2200 which i use on occasion.. last week all of a sudden while using the computer the keyboard started doing some weird things.

the space bar acts like the enter button
every time the "v" is pressed , "b" comes next too it...and
when the "m" is pressed, "n" appears next too it

it seems to be just the 4 keys directly above the space bar and the space bar its self..

It got so frustrating until I cant even use it anymore.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

A:Keyboard Problem Dell Laptop

A - Have youu tried an external keyboard onn it?

B - You weren't playing any games on it were you?

C - How clean is it, and has any liquids got into it?

This model of Dell is actually available in many makes, as it was an outsourced body (it shares the same keyboard with my Gateway Solo 1400, as well as the HP 1000/1100 series). It also means that it's not the newest beastie on the block, and that after time, keyboards do go bad.

But not to worry - this model isn't too hard to fix or replace the keyboard if needed, but first give it a good cleaning.

A good replacement keyboard can be aquired from parts dealers for about $19 to $29, and in the meantime, if you wish, an external USB keyboard can be used (cheap ones can be found for $10 in some places).

I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop that I got a little over a month ago. It's had very little use, hasn't been dropped or spilled on, though I'm beginning to think it got jolted too much one day while in my backpack (it's a backpack designed to hold a laptop).

Anyways, now there are a few keys on the left side of the keyboard that are not working properly. For example,

If I press "W" it puts an "E" either before or after it, and vice versa, if I type an "E" it puts a "W" before or after it.

This happens will a few other keys within the same area. Is there anything I can do myself or should I call Dell? It's under warranty and I also got the 'accidental damage protection' plan.

Any help is appreciated.

Basically the built in keyboard on my laptop was playing up loads. I uninstalled it, and rebooted my PC
Upon the re-boot, it starts up, turns to a black screen and beeps at me. Its just a continuous beeping noise.
Is this because it cant find the keyboard? If so, how do I re-install it; bearing in mind that I cant get onto Windows.

Hi
My dad has got a toshiba laptop approximatley 3 years old. His keyboard is 101/102 and working correctly in the control panal, however, the @ sign is in the wrong place as is the " and i can't find the £ sign at all, i'm sure we used to move these at work for a joke but i can't find out how to do it. Just to clarify the print on the buttons of the keyboard isn't what it type when you press the buttons

@ = shift 2
" = shift '
and i can't find £ at all.

if i go into character maps it shows them in the above places but i can't amend, please help

any help would be gratefully received as it's driving me mad trying to fix it for him.

thanks and kind regards

A:KeyBoard problem on a toshiba laptop windows xp

Welcome to TSg Alliebeee

I faced the same problem some time ago but I figured it out on my own. I am assuming, you have the standard QWERTY keyboard which looks like this:

Also, I am assuming that when you press Shift+2, it does not print the @ symbol. Same is the case with " symbol right. However, you needn't worry about the pound symbol key as the standard keyboard doesn't include it. You will need to buy a new keyboard which has the key embedded and supports it's provision.

Anyways, now back to the topic. You can resolve the symbol problems by performing the following steps.

1 Click on Start.
2 Select Control Panel.
3 Access Regional and Language Options.
4 Switch to the Language tab.
5 Click Details... under the Text services and input languages section.
6 Move to the Settings tab.
7 Under the Default input language section, click on Add....
8 Select the appropriate keyboard layout, but under Input language select English [United States] and click Ok.
9 Click Ok.
10 Reboot.

See if this helps or not. Then, tinker with the settings until you find the desired one. Good Luck.

I would appreciate any help with my laptop. It recently suffered a dramatic and total failure from which I needed to return it to a factory re-set. Having done this I have a small but very irritating problem in that when I press the DEL button I get ....if I press the shift key at the same time it does then delete as intended. During the factory re-set process I would have pressed many keyboard combinations using the Function keys and the FN key and I suspect that I have unexpectedly created this reversal problem myself. If any one can help me correct this fault I would be most grateful.
Thank you.

If I use the virtual desk top keyboard from Accessablity there is no problems. Any ideas please as its driving me crazy. Hi there,
I'm using a Dell inspiron laptop with Windows xp home SP2.
My problem is as follows.

The device driver for the Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver.

Can any one help me to fix this problem, I'm not vey experienced so step by step instructions would be appreciated.
Thanks in anticipation.

A:Dell inspiron laptop. Keyboard driver problem?

I'd recommend downloading a new driver from here. Click on the 'click here to download' thing, if Internet Explorer says that it stopped files from dowloading, then right click on the place where it says that and click download file. then click download.
if it doesnt say it blocked files from downloading, then just click download. after it is done downloading, click 'open folder', and the double-click on the file. if it gives a security warning, click 'run'. i think the installation process should be pretty self-explanatory, at least i sure hope so, cuz i never actually did it myself. but if you got any questions just ask
hope this helps

Hi all. I have already posted this once here. The topic had quite a few views and not a single reply. I'm giving this another try, as the problem persists and is not getting any better.

The keyboard on my Aurora m9700 is having some strange issues. I cannot figure if it is software or hardware related, either. At random intervals, the keyboard will cease function. But when I go into standby, then come out of standby the problem seems to be magically fixed! In fact, the problem just happened right after I finished typing the last sentence. I checked event manager, nothing changed. I had to go into standby and come out of it...

So please, is there anyone on here that can help me out? I have reformatted the computer since this started happening and nothing has changed, so I do not know what could possibly be causing this!

A:Weird keyboard laptop issue. Keyboard randomly stops functioning until I standby.

Just going to keep bumping this until I get a reply, or bet banned. Every thread has some form of reply...maybe I smell or something?

Hey guys!

I recently got a Casio keyboard, with a new MIDI cable.

I'm a music artist and I'm totally new with this 'keyboard-to-computer-via-MIDI' stuff.

I don't know how to connect my Casio Keyboard to my computer with a MIDI cable. I've mostly been using Mixcraft's music library, but I want to start something new with my new keyboard.

Can someone PLEASE tell me how I can connect my keyboard to my laptop via MIDI?

I've looked at other forum posts and contacted a few music artists..........they had nothing.

Please help!

Thanks!

A:laptop keyboard does not work but works fine with usb keyboard

The fact that a USB keyboard works fine when your built in one doesn't, proves that it is the keyboard itself (or connectors) that is damaged/defective, otherwise, if it were a software problem, the external keyboard would do the same.

Hi, I do a lot of typing at night time and the click of my keyoard's keys can be quite noticeable when there is pure silence. I have a Logitech K520 which isn't so loud but I would really love a keyboard that has the same type of keys as my Samsung laptop which are practically silent. Most laptops I've tried have similar keyboards in that the key doesn't travel far at all and there is no 'clicky' sounds either.

I have no idea what I would search for as I don't know what the style of keyboard is called. There are various names on the market, 'soft touch', 'quiet touch', 'low profile' etc etc but nothing that specifically identifies a laptop style.

I would just like a wireless laptop keyboard basically, even if it's the same size as a laptop keyboard but preferrably full sized.

Thanks very much for any advice

Hi,

Everything was working fine. Suddenly, when I typed on the usb keyboard, nothing happened. So I put it in a different usb port on the laptop, and it still didn't work. So I tried the laptop's own keyboard and still nothing. I'm not sure what is going on.

I tried deleting the keyboard driver from Device Manager but that did nothing. I tried searching for this problem but all the results seem to not apply to this specifically.

Any help would be appreciated.

Also... I'm a n00b that knows very little about computers so bear with me

I have a HP vt6200 Omnibook laptop with German Keyboard. Recently my internal harddisk crashed and I replaced with a new IDE disk. I installed Windows XP (English US) afresh. Also installed the necessary drivers downloaded from HP site. Now the german keyboard is not working. It types multiple characters & behaves erratically. When I connect an external US English Keyboard, it works perfect. I tried changing the language/keyboard settings. It didn’t work.

I donot want to use German anymore on that laptop. All I want to use is only English. Now I am unable to use the laptop keyboard at all. Pls help !

Hi folks I've had success on this forum before and I'm hoping someone with more knowledge of IT than me can Cannot and in laptop to keyboard on-screen unresponsive keyboard ? W7 log no suggest Cannot log in to W7 laptop ? unresponsive keyboard and no on-screen keyboard a workaround solution Cannot log in to W7 laptop ? unresponsive keyboard and no on-screen keyboard to an issue I currently have with a Windows Home Premium laptop This is an old laptop that I only use from time to time but it still has a number of files and photos on it that I don't have saved elsewhere Last time I used the laptop it was acting as if the Ctrl key was being pressed every - seconds which made the keyboard difficult to use because it triggered shortcuts as I tried to type Ctrl O Ctrl S etc Because I don't use the laptop as my main machine I decided that I'd uninstall the keyboard driver from within the Control Panel and just use the on-screen keyboard going forward Following this I powered the machine on a couple of days ago and panicked when I discovered that I couldn't get the Ease of Access dialog box to display on the login screen to allow me to enable the on-screen keyboard It doesn't produce any kind of error it simply does nothing when the button located in the left-hand corner is clicked At this point I was still hopeful that I could get around the issue by connecting a standard USB keyboard but this is also completely unresponsive although it does appear to be getting power from the laptop because the Caps Lock indicator light is lit I've tried a few alternatives connecting the keyboard before powering up during the start up process and also at the log in screen Additionally in the hope that it would automatically install a driver in the background and eventually allow the keyboard to function I left the machine running for about minutes but still nothing So just to confirm the machine has only a single user account set up on it which is password protected I can't proceed past the log in screen at all the laptop's default keyboard is unresponsive Ease of Access OSK dialog box will not display and the standard USB keyboard I have here doesn't appear to be helping either I also considered trying the above in safe mode before realising that I couldn't even do that without a keyboard unless there's another way of accessing this that I'm not aware of Any ideas - Thanks

A:Cannot log in to W7 laptop – unresponsive keyboard and no on-screen keyboard

If you are just interested in recovering your data to save elsewhere you could purchase an external enclosure for about $8.00 at Newegg, remove the HDD from the laptop and install it in the external enclosure. You can then attach it to another computer via a USB cable (which comes with the enclosure) and access your data to recover what you want.

Hi, I have an old Time laptop (so getting any drivers/chipsets will be a pain) that I'm using as a Home Theatre PC under my TV. I can wake up from standby with its power button, but not from its keyboard. Also, I can't do this using my Microsoft Wireless Desktop Keyboard, connected via USB (laptop doesn't have any PS2 ports).

I want to be albe to keep the laptop lid closed at all times and placed above my VCR, so having to open it every time I want to wake from standby is not ideal.

I've looked at all the APM properties for m/board and keyb but nothing. The BIOS says nothing about power management either.

Running Win XP SP2

Any suggestions? Thanks.

My grandmother was in the middle of typing an email. When she hit the shift key to make a capital letter, a box about sticky keys came up, and now neither keyboard will work. She has restarted the computer, unplugged/re-plugged in the auxilary keyboard, (before, even with the auxilary keyboard plugged in, she could still use the laptop keyboard), pressing the scroll lock key didn't do anyting either.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

I'm thinking about taking and old laptop and retrofitting it with a mini motherboard to use as a server at my new apartment. I would like to use the keyboard and monitor on the laptop case to keep the overall size down but I can't find any reference as to how you connect standard motherboard connectors (video and PS2(keyboard)) to the connectors found on the laptop monitor and keyboard. If anyone knows where I can find these connectors or specs on how to make them I would really appreciate it. If the mod gets done it will probably be pretty impressive and I'll give you credit for your troubles. Thanks

I have some problems with my keyboard. I know that this not an issue with the keyboard, since I have tried two keyboards. One wired, one wireless. Anyway, the problems are that sometimes keys take 5-10 seconds to respond, keys sometimes hang, and that keys sometimes completely stop responding. Remember, all 3 of these problems occur no matter which I try to use. The two keyboards I have tried are the SteelSeries Apex (Wired) and the Logitech K520 (Wireless). More details about keyboards (probably unnecessary):
Apex:
-Customizable color options, also has effects that fade into different colors
-4 profiles with keys to switch (acts like different keyboardsno changes to USB hub)
-2 USB 2.0 Ports
-Takes 2 USB slots
-SteelSeries logo button between right ALT and document (correct word) button
K520:
-Battery Indicator
-Meh, other than that, just an average keyboard with a number pad
EDIT: Ran sfc /scannow, no problems.

The Wired keyboards can be either PS/2 [round purple plug] or USB. The Wireless probably used a USB transceiver/dongle.

Since you say the problem is not the keyboard but you don't say whether those same keyboards have been tested on other computers my best guess is the either the keyboards are bad, unlikely for all 3 at the same time, or that the keyboard controller on the motherboard for the ports is bad. My first diagnostic is to shut the computer down and pull the power cord from the back of it, wait a minute and plug it back in and try again. Second would be to try the keyboards on a different computer.

Also, it is quite possible for static electricity, sometimes unfelt, has damaged the ports or the keyboards or both. My wife killed a motherboard some years ago just by touching the keyboard.

Im trying to fix my mom's laptop she has a Dell Inspiron 1200. And for some reason when you type on it you get an extra letter, for example when you press 'a' you get 'as' or 'sa'. I dont know whether this could be a software problem, or just a dumb hardware thing. Anyone have an idea what the problem is? and if it's even fixable? Thanks much guys.

A:Laptop keyboard mix up

Hi!

Yes, it could be either. However, my experience with the 1200’s indicates a failing keyboard and/or a keyboard that has had something spilt on, even a little splatter of something sticky can cause this.

To eliminate a “software” issue, it would be best to boot into another OS or piece of software that will allow you to type. Even if you just download the Linux Ubuntu Live CD and boot to it. Then open Open Office and type all the letters on the keyboard to see if it still occurs.

Sorry, the Ubuntu Live CD is the 1st thing that popped into my mind for a bootable OS or program that would allow you test. I’m sure there are other programs out there that would allow you to do this too.

Thanks……………. Shane
