Help Accessing old User Documents & Settings?

Q: Help Accessing old User Documents & Settings?

I recently replaced my motherboard which because my new one is a different chipset than my old one, required me to repair my windows install. Rather than do that and possibly lose a bunch of stuff in My Documents folder and my extensive Favorites I opted to just do a new install on another partition. So far everything has worked fine but when I tried to get into my old Admin files in my "Documents & Settings" Folder it gave me a red x and said Access Denied.

Anyone know how I get around this and into this folder?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So I have my entire hard drive backed up to an image file. I had to format and put a new hard drive in my machine. All is fine and dandy, but when I try to access my user's folder in "documents and settings" on the mounted "image" all I get is "access is denied" - anyone know how to fix this, or get around it?

When I started up it says Win.ini corrupt. Then it starts
up as a new user losing track of Favorites and Start Menu
and Desktop Icons, Display and Folder attributes. Under
Documents and Settings it has added Dave.U5R2D5 in
addition to Dave which still has all the information. I tried
switching the 2 Filenames to get back to what it used to be but
gave an error message and didn't do it and started another new file.
Is there some way to use the old Dave file?

A:Lost settings, New user made in Documents and Settings

Hiya asd123321.

It sounds like you`ve re-installed the system from CD over the top of an existing system, giving you a fresh `Dave`. Have you recently run a repair or indeed, done a clean install ?

As a work-around, can you take the documents & favourites from the old `Dave` and put them in the new `Dave` so at least you`re back up and running again.

Hi tech guys, today I experienced a lockup during Windows startup. I had some strange errors in the past days so it was a little expected. Kind of a big problem but nothing a Windows reinstallation can't fix.

Last time such a thing happened, it simply formatted my whole HDD, losing all my documents and programs. This time, I tried to only reinstall my windows folder using a boot from cd to keep my files. All worked as expected besides that I lost all my sessions. Since all my files are in a protected folder that can only be viewed a session that doesn't exist anymore I'm screwed.

How do I hack these protections and get my stuff back?

I am laptop user. About 2hr ago, i login to my lappy and discover that my profile is different. My folders on desktop went missing and some of the setting changed. Then i try on my own to solve it but to no avail. Fortunately i come upon my C:\Documents and Settings and discover that strange profile C:\Documents and Settings\TEMP and my original profile C:\Documents and Settings\p0716499 was still there. This imply that my previous setting and files are still in my laptop. However, I cant changed back to the original profile and struck with the temp profile.
Initially i suspect is registry problem so i DL "UPHClean Service" by miscosoft but to no avail. Now currently i suspect it might be the work of a virus. I need help. Thank anyone who help me in advance.

I made a new user account under Windows XP Pro and deleted my old one. Then I saw the old user's folder. I tired to delete it but I couldn't and an error message popped up:

That folder is 3.48 GB heavy and contains over 13000 files.
I also tried to take ownership of that folder. No luck.

So, please, if you know how to solve this problem, let me know.

A:Documents and Settings\User

Hi

Firstly you can run chkdsk - hopefully that will sort out the strange file name:
To do this go to Start -> Run -> type chkdsk c: /r -> click Ok . When asked if you want to force a dismount say No. When asked to schedule the check at the next startup say Yes. Restart your PC to allow chkdsk to run.

Then you can download Unlocker, save it to your hard drive and install it.
Once installed
-Right click on the User folder
-Select Unlocker
-In the Unlocker screen choose Delete under action
-If any processes are locking the folder select Unlock All, If no locking handles are found press OK

Can anyone explain to me why I have five "user" folders in C:Documents and Settings ? They are "Administrator", "Owner", "All Users", "Default User", and "Administrator+computer name". Under User Accts. in Control Panel, there is only "Owner(computer administrator)" and "Guest(account off)". The first five seem to make Explorer very bloated and confusing to me. Do I really need all five folders and if so what purpose do they serve?
Thanks

A:Why are there so many "user" folders in C:Documents and Settings?

Hello and welcome,

Each one of those folders represents a user on that system. The amount of folders varies due to how many users and what software is using the computer. Windows XP and Vista don't show these accounts in the user accounts section of the control panel without editing the registry. I would leave the accounts on the system for now.

I find one user account name called "default user" in C:/documents and settings.

I wonder what it's all about.

A:what is default user in documents and settings

Whenever a new user logs on (the first time), Windows copies the settings from the Default User profile (located at Documents and Settings\Default User) to the newly created user profile. In other words, the Default User profile is as a template which Windows uses in order to initialize new profiles/logins.

Windows XP. Am sorting out a computer for a friend. Under Control Panel/User Accounts it just shows 1 - his name. However, if I look at C:\Documents and Settings, there are 4 entries:
Administrator, [4MB] All Users, [37MB] Default Users [487KB] and the name of his daughter who used to own the computer [4GB]. Are all these necessary? I tried to change the last one to his name but it told me it was a system file and could not be renamed. I located the profile in the Registry - is it safe to delete the one in his daughter's name?

Thanks

I had a registry problem in that when I booted up my laptop it said a hive file for the SOFTWARE key was damaged I fixed this by going into recovery console and restoring the registry backup So now Windows starts again and everything is good All of my files are still in tact However my settings are all gone Even though Settings Folders User in and Documents my files are on the hard drive the appearance of everything is as if Windows has just been installed In Documents and Settings the reason is revealed My user folder in there was Jon Jon is still there and Windows says I m logged in as Jon but in the Documents and Settings folder there is a Jon JONSLAPTOP folder and I am assuming Windows loaded with the settings from THAT folder which I User Folders in Documents and Settings assume was created when recovery console fixed the registry hive file My question is is there a quick User Folders in Documents and Settings fix to getting my settings back Can I just copy everything from Jon into Jon JONSLAPTOP and then rename it Jon and delete the other Jon Or are there settings in this new Jon JONSLAPTOP folder that I need to make Windows bootup now Anyone nbsp

A:User Folders in Documents and Settings

Oh, and also, I've noticed, some programs give me a "this action is only valid for products that are currently installed" error message, and I think it's saying that because when said programs were installed, this 'Jon.JONSLAPTOP' folder didn't exist, and therefore that user didn't get privleges to use it. Which still doesn't make sense because XP says I'm still logged in as 'Jon', the same user from before, but using settings I assume from 'Jon.JONSLAPTOP' instead of 'Jon'.

If anyone can help me with this I'd appreciate it. If not I'm gonna format my hard drive tomorrow.

Hi all
I've been installing / uninstalling stuff while testing on a CLEAN install of W7 (x-64).

I see now one of the directories (Documents and settings username1) is now 7GB.

The WHOLE OS only takes around 14 GB .

I can't see what's taking up the space -- is there any nice utility that clearly can show Disk usage in a sort of cloured pie / bar chart etc rather like the nice Linux utility DU. (I've enabled "show hidden files etc").

I'm sure it's all related to me installing / uninstalling stuff but Windows explorer is a HORRIBLE tool for "Cleaning up" disks etc. It's fine for everyday purposes but for this type of stuff it's not the correct tool.

Cheers

I am trying to open a user folder on a backup image I have.

It is an Acronis True Image backup and mounts a virtual drive you can then access.

The error I receive when trying to open the 'user' folder is:

----------------------

G:\Documents and Settings\user is not accessible.

Access Is Denied

----------------------

I have tried to turn of simple file sharing and add my the administrator to the permission but am not able to.

The Add... Button is greyed out.

If i go to the Advanced section and Owner tab.

I receive: You only have permission to view the current owner on user.

The only areas I can edit are the Auditing ones.

Any idea on how I can get access to my files short of re imaging this backup to a disk?

Thanks

I was forced to reinstall Windows one time, but I didn't wipe out my hard drive. So now I have these files in my C:\Documents and Settings\{old user account name} that I can't seem to get rid of.
Everytime I try to delete the folder or files within the folder, an error message says, "Cannot delete {folder/file name}: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."
This seems strange because my hard drive is only 50% full and the file cannot possibly be in use because it's not affiliated with Windows anymore, since I reinstalled it.
I want to delete it because these files take up hundreds of megabytes and creates fragments in my hard drive.
Help would be appreciated.

You'd have to make a new account. Then get on the admin account, change the new account to admin, then get on the new admin account and delete the 'valued customer.'
That should work...

not sure what causes this but I have seen it before.

the sys is Windows XP SP3

I had one machine that has gone out on loan during repairs and it now has several orphaned User folders under Documents & Settings, which did not have security set on them, have been emptied, but I would like to cleanup the mess. Logged in as Administrator and in safe mode I cannot delete these. I think this is one of those naming issues where the real name is not what's showing?? something like that.

how do I ditch these? I figure i might could slave it to a Win7 system, take over the files, then delete. that's a lotta work so if there's a quick way, that's better

I am now trying to access my files on the old hard drive under documents and settings\user but it wont allow me to access them - how can I access the files? I did set up user accounts on this but they were not password protected...
I'm on XP...
PS I've tried info on here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308421 but I dont have a 'security' tab once i click on properties....I'm no techy so advice in laymans terms please!!
Ta,
Matti

A:Solved: D:\Documents and Settings\user is not accesible. Access is denied. Help

If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab.Click to expand...

Did you follow this step? When you start the computer, and before Windows boots, you need to press F8 and select Safe Mode.

New comp will not allow me to access "documents and settings "to transfer photo files into it

how CAN I TRANSFER PHOTO FILES INTO "DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS

A:accessing "documents and settings"folder

C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName is what Windows XP previously called the User file. The User file in all versions of Windows since then are C:\Users\yourusername. Librariess are the place holders introduced in Windows 7 with short cuts to the directories (Pictures, Music Etc) in the User File. There are no directories or files that you can access or rename called Documents and Settings.
You will have to remap the Momento Photo book to C:\Users\YourUserName\(My)Pictures\Momento Photo book or whatever the name of the file that Photobook creates.

Hi:

My friends computer appears to have gotten a mean virus or spyware. Windows will not successfully start. I removed the drive and set it up as an external drive and scanned it with SuperAntiSpyWare, AVG and MalWarebytes Antimalware. All found some trojans and viruses, apparently removing them all. However, I still cannot access his profile or the administrator profile--all report access denied.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

I have seen many people to brick their system because they removed duplicate files. If you don't know exactly what they are, don't touch them.

And if you want to engage in the adventure, make an image of the C partition first so that you can always backpaddle.

All of a sudden when I try to open my C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents folder, it says "access denied"

running xp home sp2.

any suggestions?

oh, I did a google for solutions and various pages often suggested I turn off simple file sharing, but the option is non existant under my file/view menu...

A:Access Denied to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents

It sounds to me as though the administrator has made that directory path private. Are you the admin, and if so, are you logged into a user account with admin rights? If all else fails, reboot and log into the Administrator account and go to the control panel/users and change your preferred account status. While you're there, unlock the problem path to allow all users to view.

Good Luck!

A:C:\Documents and Settings\all users\documents DENIED!!!

It looks like one of the junction points that provides some backwards compatibility and which shows when unhiding files in Control Panel>Folder Options>View. There is no Documents and Settings folder in Win7, except as a junction point.

Read more about junction points here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...=vs.85%29.aspx

In Win7 Documents is under All Users>[User Name]>Documents. Perhaps you should hide Hidden and System Files again to see only the WIn7 folders you need.

A:'Documents and Settings' and 'My Documents' query

1) I wouldn't, but it can probably be done...it's hard to redirect those stupid Windows links. You could create your own shortcut to "Mary's Documents", copy the contents of the ex-husband's folder to the Mary's documents, then you should be able to delete it.

2) For safety's sake I wouldn't, but you could give it a shot... (or do what I said above)

3)No, they are default folders that WIndows uses for some mysterious purposes.

4)Definitely not!

5)Go to theeldergeek.com to find a registry hack which will let you delete the My Documents folders. Then add the new shortcut above.

Remember, if you delete something you shouldn't have, you can restore it from the recycling bin!:grinthumb

A:Having a problem accessing documents and pictures

Go to Start/Run and type chkdsk C: /R and press enter. The Command Prompt window appears (DOS). Now type a Y for Yes to run Check Disk at next bootup then manually reboot the computer. The Check Disk utility will run at next boot up and try and fix any file errors.
You also can download the ISO image for Seatools or Drive Fitness in my signature and burn the image to a CD using IMGBurn also in my signature. And boot off of the newly created CD and run the Quick and Advanced tests on the HDD.

I am trying to recover some information from a hard drive that wouldn't boot properly by setting it to slave and accessing via a healthy drive running windows XP, the data seems to be intact but I do not know (if its possible) how to access the personal documents which I had in my personal account in the older drive. Is there anyway to access the personal documents without having to be in that account (something that has become and impossibility at the moment)

Thank you

Hi, I have two administrator accounts setup, but they can access each other's documents (C:\Users\Example). I tried removing all but the owner in the security tab, but administrators can take ownership this way somehow, anyone know what I can do (besides making them non-administrator accounts)

A:Stopping admin accounts accessing another's documents

Correct me if I am wrong (which I likely am) but wouldn't creating a password for those two admin accounts prevent them from accessing each other without the other ones password?

Okay this is accessing My on Problem folder HD external Documents sort of an odd emergency and I m hoping Problem accessing My Documents folder on external HD someone here might be able to help First of all I m in Athens Greece right now I was using a Dell laptop - Inspiron - running XP until about two days ago when the thing just went kaput Discussions with Dell strongly suggest that the motherboard has a short on it and it won t boot up at all That s not really the problem though - read on I will not be back in the States until the end of the month and I need badly various documents that were stored on the dead computer s hard drive I purchased an external hard drive case USB for the inch drive in my old laptop installed it in the case and am currently at an internet cafe attempting to extract the documents from the hard drive Here s what happens The computer here runs XP and it recognizes the external drive However in My Computer although it lists the external as a new drive it doesn t give it the standard quot hard drive quot icon In fact it s the usual quot unrecognized icon quot symbol Despite the situation in I can open the external drive in Windows Explorer The file structure is intact as far as I can tell When I go to Documents and Settings I can open all folders EXCEPT for the one labelled with my username from the old Dell Inspiron Of course that s where all of the documents I currently need are stored on the external drive When I click on this folder an error message pops up - it s in Greek which I cannot read of course but the tech at the intenet cafe translated it loosely as quot cannot access the folder quot I had a password assigned to my username on the Is it possible that this password is still active on the external drive and I can t access the My Documents folder under that name unless I somehow bypass the password That s my only theory considering that everything else on the drive is completely accessible copyable etc Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated The only caveat is that I have to do this on a Greek machine with all Windows labelling in Greek So usual ways of explaining things like quot Go to Control Panel then Administrative Tools then Disk Management quot which is what I wanted to do won t work because I can t read the labels I do know how to get to the Control Panel but from there I m lost I never thought I d need to memorize the icons Another possible idea would be to tell me how to switch the language in XP from Greek to English and then give me the instructions in English Sorry for the long post I hope it s clear and I hope someone can help me Thanks Charles nbsp

Hello Computer Bleepers I recently fixed a problem on my computer involving an infection by a rogue software called quot Windows Vista Restore quot Version June and eight infections including Rootkit TDSS After restoring the visibility on my hard and documents files accessing when "Access Denied" drive my files were visible but still in quot hidden quot format "Access Denied" when accessing documents and files Now that I ve unhidden them I get an quot Access Denied quot message whenever I click on them but I can still access MS Word documents directly through Word images directly through Paint etc The following is a list of procedures I went through You may skip this section and go directly to helping resolve the problem if you wish When I was browing the Internet one of my windows suddenly displayed a rogue error message saying that my computer had suffered a quot Hard Drive Failure quot I left my Internet on for minutes not realizing there was a problem before I came back and shut off the computer Next I went to a different computer in hopes of finding a solution The infection itself tried to lead me to the website by windows-vista-restore com and the company claimed to be SecurePay INC However no other websites were accessible Getting back to the infected computer the screen was black and half my files were hidden away and the computer tried to restart itself Error messages and the typical quot infections quot kept popping up I tried to restart my computer myself and switch to safe mode which was unsuccessful because of an existing screen display setting So I bypassed the recommended Safe Mode and worked on the problem in regular mode First I unplugged my Internet and went to the Registry Editor as indicated on multiple websites a risky procedure and deleted items including Advanced quot Hidden quot which resurfaced and Advanced quot ShowSuperHidden which remained deleted After restarting my computer again I turned on Windows Task Manager which was unaffected by the malware I shut off a few running programs including one with the name quot SwPGvtLdJxoV quot which later turned out to have an associated symbol identical to one used by the rogue software After discovering this I deleted this file from the RegEdit which temporarily solved some problems It turns out that online instructions asked to delete Run quot Windows Vista Restore exe quot but in the same location the random-character file was found There is not much info available but it looks like the new version of the program used a new name to hide its identity I ran MalwareBytes on my computer which took minutes for a quick scan and discovered Rootkit TDSS I quarantined that infection then restarted my computer Upon doing this however I ran another scan and this one took two hours It discovered seven infected items which I again quarantined and later deleted Afterwards I ran the in-built Vista System Restore feature which had a name similar to the rogue software After backing up the system to a previous date my files appeared to all be deleted yet they were accessible from the program itself ie Word The System Restore stated that my documents were unaffected Browsing through my files again I discovered a folder that had a strange alphanumeric name and contained the file quot spclite quot This was created during a previous infection by a rogue software named quot Vista Total Security quot which I had removed the month before After searching through the Internet I deleted this folder After changing a few configurations all my files were now visible but in a faded-color quot hidden quot form I could open them easily but they were hidden Several more scans using MalwareBytes revealed no problems I used a cmd script attrib -h quot C quot s d to unhide my files which worked in that they now all had a normal color However this is when the quot Access Denied quot error message kept showing up even though I was fully able to access my documents through Word No... Ok, I just got a new external hard drive enclosure and a new hard drive to go inside it. I just removed the hard drive to put in a formerly working hard drive that used to be a master hard drive inside my system. I want to access the My Documents folder in the former hard drive and put them on my current hard drive so I can wipe the former hard drive and use it in my system. Does anyone know how I can access this My Documents folder? Every time I go to {Hard drive letter}/Documents and Settings/{User Name}/, it says that access is denied . How do I get around this message. (I already tried going to Properties and remove the "Read Only" check mark. Didn't work.) Could someone please help?

When trying to access the My Documents or My Pictures folders from the Start Menu (Start\Documents\My Documents) I receive the following error: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.I know that these are unique folders in that they don't have a properties option from the context menu. I believe this began after a utility called Folder Guide (http://www.freeware365.com/images/website/folderguide.gif) became corrupt, although I cannot be certain. I have been unable to figure out what is wrong, but I am fairly confident the problem is in the registry.Any help would be greatly appreciated.John

Hi everyone,

I've recently added a second hard drive which used to be my master on an old computer, and which is full of files I want to back up. Problem is that most of these files are in a My Documents folder from my windows profile on that old machine, which was password protected. I know what the password is, I just need some way of entering it, as at the moment when I try and open that folder it just says "access is denied". Please help!

I Need Help!
I was wondering if it is a issue to delete files in "Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp". I am really looking if it is safe to delete the "Documents and Settings\Kenny Hartwick\Local Settings\Temp" files.

Thanks!

A:Should I Delete "Documents and Settings\Username/Local Settings\Temp"

I don't know who Kenny Hartwick is, but deleting temp files is NOT a problem. Just get his permission, willya.

:)

edit: if you click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup you'll run a nice little routine that lets you select those, among other, files to remove as well as a file compactor for rarely used files.

Upgraded from Windows to Windows some months ago Original profile did not require password to log in and was not associated with a Google email or Microsoft account that I know of I added a user a couple of days ago added a personal account of mine with my own password from my laptop because software problem said try another user and this laptop computer didn't have any other users So I added one That was a mistake After I quot added a user quot I could ONLY log on the computer with the NEW user The old one the profile all the Added original User, user profile & / disappeared settings settings the playlists everything was gone Like it never existed There was and is no option to log on as the original The computer became an extension of my laptop with zero other option I had to add a third user and give it admin capabilities just to remove my laptop profile which I didn't really want on this computer I was just adding a user to quot try another user quot with a software problem But all my original settings seem gone I can see additional users in Windows Media Player for instance but it says I need permission to access those Since it is impossible to log on as any other user except this latest and third user I can't give myself permission to access those old playlists Adding a user should come with a warning If anyone has any ideas where I can recover the old settings I'd be grateful The threads I've seen around the web and here have directed to Windows workarounds which do not work for my machine

Hello and welcome to the TenForums

It might be worth finding out all the users that are associated with your PC. To do this open a command prompt (right click on the Start button) and then type in the following command wmic useraccount list full

This will display all users on your system (including hidden ones) and if you paste the results here we can determine which accounts are still present. If you want to see more details of this process look in the tutorial: User Account Details - View in Windows 10

I started configuring Vista Home Premium as an administrative user and was wondering if it was possible to transfer the configuration for that user to a different standard user account which, from what I understand, would be more secure. It should be possible to switch the administrative user account to a standard user account (haven't seen this either), but I would like the option of using a standard user account with basically the settings I have set up so far for the admin account while maintaining the admin account as is. Is there an easy way to accomplish this? Thanks.

The easiest way would be to create a new account, copy the profile of the original account over to the new one, and then make the new account a limited one.

Though this is for corrupted profiles, the method is the same:

I am having trouble accessing the router settings of my linksys router. I want to update the firmware. I entered the default gateway that I found using the ipconfig command. It will not work though. I keeps displaying a 404 error. Could it be that I am using the guest network? Any suggestions?

A:Accessing Router Settings?

whats the exact model of the router ?
also post back here an ipconfig /all and an xirrus screen shot
and tell us what network you connect to and also the IP used

to access the settings of a router and make changes - certainly for firmware - make sure you are connected to the router with a cable and that the PC you use if a laptop is also plugged into the mains - any powerfail during the process will damage the router and may not be recovered

------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will now be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy

Now go back to the forum - goto the reply and then right click in the reply box and paste the results.
The results from the notepad should now appear in the forum reply.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector.aspx
Direct link to the program is here http://info.xirrus.com/Wi-FiInspectorConfirmation.html

{If the above link does not work heres another link http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download/fid,77196-order,4/download.html}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need will need to have NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

A user guide is available here http://www.xirrus.com/cdn/pdf/Xirrus-Wi-Fi-inspectorguide-1-2-1-RevB-6.aspx

post a screen shot of the program running.
if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information.

post which SSID name is yours, its located in the list, under network "Adapter Name" (1st column)

To post a screen shot of the active window.
1) hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application (Start> All Programs> Accessories> Paint) and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
OR
2) if you are using Vista/Windows 7 you can use the "snipping tool" which is found in Start> All programs> Accessories> Snipping Tool

To upload the screen shot to the forum, open the full reply ... Read more

A:Why User folder shows My Documents but folder location is Documents?

Hello pcwin,

The user folders that have "My" in the name are not actually named with the "My".

These are symbolic links, so when you name the folder "Documents", it will automatically rename and display as "My Documents", but in reality is still "Documents".

It can be a bit confusing.

Hello I've been wanting to access the Advanced Chipset Settings in Windows but I simply can't find it I looked online to see where it is and I learned that it was in the BIOs However I couldn't find the BIOs so I searched a bit more and learned that it was replaced by the UEFI thing so I accessed that instead However the Accessing Advanced Chipset Settings? I have a toshiba sattelite and I access the bios tapping f2 on bootup. However the bios options are very limited and next to pointless. There are no advanced options. Seems they like to assume were all morons and not to be trusted.
They hide everything in windows eight too. I'm surprised they give us a keyboard but that will be next to go.......

I had a corrupted installation of XP Home. I added a 2nd hdd which is now the master and my original disk is the slave.

Windows explorer sees the 2nd ( original) HDD perfectly.

When I try and access my Docs and Settings from the original install which were held on a Passworded Administrator account, I get an access denied error. I have set up an identical account on the new installation of XP Home.

Any Thoughts how I can get to my original documents?

Hi

I recently upgraded my computer's CPU/Motherboard/RAM etc however, after plugging in my old hard drives, Windows failed to load. In an effort to save my old files I reinstalled windows XP on my secondary hard drive, hoping to access my original hard drive's files through the reinstalled version of windows. Everything went according to plan except when trying to access the old 'My Documents' folder, and the computer says 'Access denied,' probably because that folder was declared private on my old network and because the user account was password protected. Please help me retrieve my old files!

A:Solved: Accessing Virtual Memory Settings again

It`s always worth running anti virus scan to start with if you get something like that happening but you should be able to get to page file (or virtual memory) faily easily using the Win key + Pause-Break, then Advanced / Performace / Advanced.

I know there are various options of what to set the page file at but I`ve never had a problem setting it to `System Managed`.

Hello everyone,
I have a newer Macbook 2GHz with theMac OS X Version 10.4.11. I'm living in Japan and I purchased an xbox 360 with the wireless lan adapter. I have an the Japanese ADSLModemMS5 produced by NTT. I also have the mac wireless router which leaves me with no extra ethernet ports.

My real problem is that I can't get the XBox360 to be functional online. It says it connects but then the tests stop at the IP portion. The solutions microsoft offers are: mainly just changing your settings to DHCP enabled. I can't find an easy way to change that through my network settings.

On the other hand, my Nintendo Wii works wirelessly with the same modem and router, so I think DHCP should already be enabled as it usually is. Can anybody help me get this thing online?

A:Accessing my DHCP settings wirelessly through the internet?

Well, I'm pretty sure that DHCP should be enabled unless you've specifically turned it off on the router. If you want a wired connection, just get a cheap Ethernet switch to expand the number of wired ports. If you have a computer connected to the router, just check and see if it has the DHCP client enabled. If so, obviously the DHCP server on the router is working.

I have a Dell Precision Tower 5810 running Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
I created Rescue Media for the Macrium Reflect Free Imaging Software on a USB Flash Drive.
I can boot to that USB Flash Drive IF I can first boot into Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
But, the chances are that when I will need that Rescue Media, I probably will not be able to boot into Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit.
I have tried to directly access the UEFI by pressing the F2 key at the Dell Logo after powering on the System.  I also tried F12.  Neither has worked.
Is there something different that needs to be done on a Dell Precision Tower 5810 running Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit to directly access the UEFI & change the boot sequence when I cannot boot into Windows?

I have my own laptop but son and hub use the main desktop in our home. The harddrive, however, is just about full. So I've been looking around and see SO MUCH, what "I" would call junk .... but then again, I'm not sure. Compared to most of you here I"m sure I am a novice.

Anywho, I did a general search for *.gif and came up with 7,553 files !!!! Lots of these are under, for instance, Documents and Settings, default user, desktop, then TONS of files under there.

Also, to sign in on my computer there are 2 options ..... but under documents and settings, there are HP administrator, all users, default user, drag racer v3, administrator .... what are all these and are they necessary?

Sorry if these are stupid questions; am afraid to just start deleting !!

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

It sounds as though loads of different user accounts have been set up on your computer.

Go into Start>Control Panel>User Accounts....... and see just how many accounts are on your hard drive. You'll then need to liaise with your menfolk to see which ones can be deleted.

On Windows 7, I can see a folder called users. It seems to be used as "user documents and settings" for previous Windows version. But can't find some folders such as "application data". By searching a lot on internet, they said there is appdata which point to "application data". but in my users folder, I can't find it.

A:Where is documents and settings?

You have to have "show hidden files" clicked in explorer and you will see it in your directory.

Hello - I'm running Windows XP Pro on a Dell with 384MB, 866MHz. My problem is I have multiple user accounts created. My own account is an administrator account. When I choose Start -> All Programs what shows does not reflect what's in my c:\Documents and Settings\Mike\Start Menu\Programs. Instead it appears to be using a combination of c:\Documents and Settings\All Users and c:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs.

I've also noticed that my default "explore" starting folder is c:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs. This seems to be the only account affected by this.

Does anyone know how to re-point this all to c:\Documents and Settings\Mike...

Thanks
