Windows 7, Microsoft Word 2007 & compatibility mode

Q: Windows 7, Microsoft Word 2007 & compatibility mode

I am working on a Word document that has been saved in Word 2003 mode. The document is 94 pages long. Now, when I open it, the formatting is all funky, it does not let me correct it and it says I have opened the document in "Compatibility Mode".

What the heck it this?
How do I fix it?

The formatting issues are contained in the first 3 images I attached to this post (a black line on the left, forced space at the top most of the pages, and when I try to delete text, it just highlights it in red and draws a line through it.

The 4th image is the message I get about compatibility mode.

When I following the instructions and convert the document, the compatibility mode message goes away, but I still have the other 3 problems.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Try opening Word in Safe mode. Hold down the Ctrl key and then open Word, say yes to the pop-up.

If that does not work try this. I know it says - in an earlier version but try it anyway.
Word 2003 and later versions of Word have a feature that permits you to assign permissions to specific parts of a document to specific users. When you use this feature, you can make the overall content read-only while you grant editing permissions to specific users for specific parts of the document. When you open such a file in an earlier version of Word, the document opens as protected for comments, permitting users to make comments to the file but not permitting edits to the content. If you receive a document that is protected for comments, you can remove the protection.

To do this, perform one of the following actions:

* In Word 2007, click the Review tab, click Protect Document in the Protect group, click Restrict Formatting and Editing, and then click Stop Protection.
* In Word 2003, click Unprotect on the Tools menu.

If that does not work open it from a cmd.
In the Run dialog box, type this: winword.exe /a (note the space after exe and before the /a switch)

I am taking some online courses and in one of those courses, I have to use a template to update a hierarchy chart. According to all the documentation that I can find, I should be able to use the SmartArt in the document, only that it would should the 2003/earlier type of diagrams/insert, etc. However, this is not the case. The SmartArt Icon is grayed out and I am not able to modify the template.

What have I missed or messed up?

My OS is Vista Home Premium which doesn't include MW as a free program. Seems most if not all of my documents were saved in MW. But when I open the document all I can do is look at it. The compatibility mode won't let me do anything. I can't even copy/paste. Apparently, I have to buy MW if I want to actually use it. So, how do I get all those documents out of MW?

I need Word 200 and 2007 on the same Win 7 computer, but they don't seem to reside well on the same machine. When starting Word 2007, every time after using Word 2000, it initiates a configuration process that takes a significant amount of time. The same happens for Word 2000 after using 2007, but it's configuration process is quick.

Any ideas how to have them both work without this process? Is 2010 an option to eliminate it?

First thing learn to do a "Save As" and save it where you know where it is, on any file when editing a attachment to emails.
It will save you a lot of grief..
Since you are using yahoo email I think you can kiss this file good by. As far as I know all internet mail attachments get cleared when closing out the file.

Hi, all

I am using Outlook 2007 on Windows 7 RC1 (7100) with Franklin Covey PlanPLus for Outlook v.6 add-on. This add-ob really gets slow at times. I asked tehir support, they said windows 7 is not supported (ah, that was easy to forsee).

Before I try the thing on XP - I want to try running Outlook in XP Compatibility Mode. When I try this Outlook starts, but cannot find my profile (or any profiles whatsoever).

Ok, windows 7 keeps Outlook data differently from Win XP. But how can I create a profile for XP compatibility mode? The craziest thing is run a control panel which creates profiels in XP Compatibility mode, or reinstall outlook (or start it with some command-line switch to pretend that it runs the very first time and force it to craete a profile while running in XP Compatibility mode?)

Anybody? Any ideas?

Happy Holidays!

Running Office 2007. Have made a template for a client that features VB (not legacy) CheckBoxes, ComboBoxes, and TextBoxes. The template is a one page document with tables; the client (a dental surgeon) enters patient name and date, checks various boxes about patient condition/recommendations for treatment, selects text from combo boxes. Auto text will also be included.

The problem: The template takes up to 60 seconds to load on his machine (New Dell, 1Gb RAM, NTFS, Office 2003). I save the template in "compatibility mode" on my machine (P4 2.8 Ghz 1Gb FAT32). Also, the template takes about 10-15 seconds to load on my machine.

How can I speed it up? Is it a compatibility issue?

How can I send email attachments (documents) composed in Microsoft Works Word Processor so that they will be formatted correctly when viewed by recipients using Microsoft Word? Iíve tried saving them as .wps, .doc, and .docx file extensions before sending, yet they are still incorrectly formatted when viewed by people using MS Word. Short of purchasing the Microsoft Word software, is there a solution that would rectify this problem using what already exists on this particular operating system (Vista Home Edition)?

A:Microsoft Word Compatibility

You might try Open Office. Free download and can do just about everything MS office can do. The only limitation I've seen so far is although you can open a *.docx document, you cannot save into a *.docx extension. You can, however, create or save a document with a *.doc extension.

It depends upon how complex the formatting is that you're trying to use.

One thing that might be worth your while investigating is downloading the free Office Suite. It can save as microsoft office files (.doc, ppt, etc), though not having used Works I can't say how well it keeps its formatting in comparison to works.
The more interesting point however is that OOo has an export as PDF function. So as long as the person you're sending it to doesn't then need to modify the page(and has adobe reader or similar which just about everyone does) the formatting of the PDF will be exactly as it is on your computer.

Just got a new Windows 7 machine. Installed Word 2002 and Excel from my Office XP disks with no problem whatsoever. Once in a while text in my document will be highlighted and start flashing, and closing the document or stopping the program in task manager is the only thing that stops it. It might have to do with erroneous commands coming from my Dragon Naturally Speaking program, but I'm not sure.

Question: Is it likely that if I ran Word 2002 in Windows XP compatibility mode it might run a little better? I have Home Premium Windows 7 so I don't have the Windows XP MODE, but it's my understanding that I can run things in a compatibility mode, or are those the same things? I'm OK with it how it is but wouldn't mind eliminating this glitch.

A:Word 2002 in Office XP - compatibility mode?

Word 2002.... in fact 2003... should perhaps have been installed in compatibility mode... but another possible reason for the glitches is if you've not also loaded all the service packs and patches since installing it...

You could try Run as Administrator for your editing problem.

There are probably easier ways (maybe a table, for instance) but you could insert (I have 2003 - don't know the 07 commands) an autoshape box (or two or more, as needed) after your word - then copy that/those and paste a duplicate after the rest of the words where you want them.

Check in the formatting of your footer. Is the 1 on a section page number counter? Or is it a set digit? The beginning of chapter two should have a section break (new page) via the Page Layout Tab, in the Page Layout Group. Chapter Three should be the same way. Then, in the footer of Chapter 2, add 2 Head and Footer Tab>Insert Page Number, not linked to the section above. The numbers should be in the correct increasing order now.

First thing I did was chkdsk. I have went in add/remove. Have no other Office installed. I have tried turning off firewall, etc., still immediately get the message.
Language/Regional setting are at English.

Any ideas on what to check or how to get this to install on my desktop. Running windows xp sp3

Hey all,

I'm running windows Vista, and recently picked up Microsoft Office 2007. I've been having some seriously annoying problems with Word, including the relatively common "Running virus scan..." problem. I've found several solutions to this problem, all fixed by changing options in various virus programs. Problem is, I'm not running any virus programs besides the ones that Vista comes pre-installed with (probably not a great idea). Point is, I don't know why I'm getting this problem without virus software installed. It also freezes for 10-15 minutes upon selecting certain options... It seems random which ones, but it has never happened with any of the basic ones, just when I click stuff like the "references" tab and stuff.

Anyhoo, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've opened a document (.doc file) with Microsoft Office Word 2007.
The document is all written in Hebrew, and I have the Hebrew Language Pack that I've downloaded using Windows Vista's Windows Update application.

So, back to Word 2007.

For some reason, the "Find" button, located in Home>> Editing, is grayed.

When I click the "Find button, two options show up, and the first of them is grayed and I can't select it:

"Go To..."Click to expand...

Why is it grayed?
I just want to find a few words, and I don't understand why such simple action is not possible.

I recently got a new computer which has Microsoft Office 2007.  I don't know how to use Microsoft Word 2007, so I installed Word 2002 on this computer.  The problem is, if I try to open a document with Word, the computer automatically wants to use 2007 unless I manually open 2002 first.  I have even tried removing Word 2007 from Office 2007 without removing the other features of Office, but when I try to open a document in Word I get a prompt to configure Word 2007, again unless I manually open 2002 before opening the document.  Can I fix this?  I haven't used the other Office programs yet, but I really don't want to remove them.

After I've typed a document and then highlight a word, right click on the word, and scroll down to synonyms in the shortcut menu, it always says 'no suggestions' no matter what the word is. I've tried looking for a solution on several different websites, including Microsoft, and have found no solution to my problem. Can anyone out there help me? Thank you all very much for your time. I think you mean .doc document, not doc. document, right?

Are you opening it from Explorer, or from within Word?

Have you tried opening another .doc file?

Try creating a new document, save it as .doc, close it, and open it again.
Report if that works.

Good luck

I'm having a formatting issue with Word 2007.

The problem I am having is that the document is not holding the format when I reopen it or when I add blocks of text. The main problem comes in the reference sections of the document where tabbed indents are lost and spaces appear randomly between words. This causes the text to move throughout the document.

Very frustrating. Thanks so much for any and all suggestions.

A:Microsoft Word 2007 Problem

When you add blocks of text, before inserting, format it to the document format you already have. Another choice is in "Advanced" choose it as a Cut/Copy/Paste option. For the reopening problem, "Register" the title of the document choosing Formatted Text in the Auto Correct screen.

Hi I am a complete newbie at this but I don't know where else to go... I am a University Student and have 2007 at home and my lecturers are posting documents using word 2003. I was told when I upgraded that this would not be a problem with compatability mode opening all older versions. Every time I open a document (all end in .doc) word 2007 opens in compatability mode only to come up with "Word has encountered a problem and needs to close" No clue what the problem is and Microsoft diagnostics say nothing is wrong... I cant save a lecture or reading instructions. What is going on??? Can anyone help me out????

A:word 2007 crashes in compatability mode!!!

Try running a repair on your install, If you go to the control panel and select add/remove programs, look for Office 2007 and then click change/remove. You will get a menu that will ask you want you want to do, add feature, remove or repair. Select repair and then go through the rest of the wizard. Also make sure that you have your office disk handy.
As for compatibility, the only time that you will have a issue is if you create a new doc, and don't select the .doc extension. Other wise you will create a doc with a .docx extention

A:hide mode in MS Word 2003 or 2007

Hello kf10,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

I don't know of a way to do this in word. Only way I know to accomplish this in word is to select all the answers, leaving the ans) portion. Hit delete, and print the page. Once it starts printing, you can use Ctrl.+Z to undo the deletion and then print the parents copies. Or, if you've saved a copy of the doc., you could print the parents page then select (hold down ctrl to multiple select) and delete the answers/print the students copies and when you close the doc. don't save the changes.

Hope this helps.

I have assigned a keyboard shortcut to Microsoft Word 2007. When I press those keys, Microsoft Word 2007 takes a while to open. If I close the program and press those same shortcut keys, Word opens up instantly. However, if I don't open word again for several minutes it takes some time to open just as it did when I first opened it. I haven't timed it to see at what point this occurs, but I did notice it after 20 minutes or so.

I am assuming that something stays in memory / running for a while (and this is independent of the fact that I already have multiple documents already open), which is why Word opens up again instantly. It is indeed instant and I am very happy with that speed, but I want it to happen every single time.

Does anyone have any ideas on how this can be done?

Note: This is being done on a Windows 8 Computer.

When I exit MS Office 2007 Word a pane appears that says "Word has stopped working and will search for a solution" (which is never found) followed by "Word is re-starting." After the re-start, I'm able to exit Word without further messages or difficulty. This is more of a nuisance than anything else but I have the impression that the program (at least the version I have) may be somewhat unstable.

I've looked for a solution on the MS Support Web site to no avail and wonder if anyone else has had a similar experience with this program.

Hello tagore.

9 crashes last day. Out of them, 6 are STOP 0x00000050: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (Usual causes: Defective hardware (particularly memory - but not just RAM), Faulty system service, Antivirus, Device driver, NTFS corruption, BIOS) and 3 are STOP 0x00000019: BAD_POOL_HEADER (Usual causes: Device driver).

In this situation, my suggestion for you would be

Scan the system for possible virus infection.
Anti-rootkit utility TDSSKiller
Windows Defender Offline
Test your RAM modules for possible errors. Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.
How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Uninstall Avira using Avira AntiVir Removal Tool. Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.

Run chkdsk /f/r, following the option two of the tutorial Disk Check

If, after doing all these the crashes continue to occur, enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers.
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

Hi Frank,

Seems that these Office doc's attributes are really sent to try us

Not sure from your post if you have followed the exact procedure, in your first method, that worked with the XLS files? - rather than select the Microsoft Word option from the available programs list, browse to the winword.exe file which should be in the same area as the excel.exe file from previous.

If this does not help there is another method, in the control panel - uninstall programs - you should be able to right click on the Microsoft Office entry and select Change, then repair, which should fix this and any other issues

another option would be to select change, and without actually changing anything proceed through the procedure, (basically this would re-install office over the top of itself.

A:Microsoft Word 2007 - I can't indent the second line in a paragraph

I should add this; I can get the second line to tab just like the first line, BUT it changes the margin then and when I go to the third line it also indents instead of going all theway to the left margin.

Hi Faridah, Welcome to Seven forums.

Lot of errors there.

Try this for starters. Fix MS Word.

Also, try to run MS Word after unchecking the option "Run as Administrator".

I know how to use bullets, but if you tab in the bullets, it will stay tabbed throughout the entire document unless you set up tabbed bullets again. When I try to backspace to go back to left alignment, it will delete the bullet and still stay tabbed. Basically what I am asking is after you do a tabbed bullet, how do you go back to aligning the bullets left again?

A:How to make bullets work in Microsoft Word 2007

Try shift-tab instead of Backspace to shift the tab to the left.

I have MS Word 2007 and the one thing I hate about it is it's default document settings. These are the settings that are applied when I open a new document in MS Word. Exactly what I dislike is the line spacing. It is always set to 1.15 and there is also a new setting I've never seen in a MS word application. It is simply stated as After and is measured by a pt value. This setting is always at 12 and I want it to be 0.If anybody knows how to keep these settings permanent please give me a heads up.
