Preferred Solution: What is Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) 4.x ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I came here because I can't get a satisfactory answer at Secunia. My windows Updater has updated everything yet Secunia says Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) 6.x is Insecure and needs to be updated. I created an Ignore rule as per instructed from Secunia but it did not work after I did a re-scan. I indicated that in their forum but I've gotten no response in weeks. Hopefully someone here can help me. I'm using Vista Premium 32 bit.

Thanks.

It seems no one can offer any advise for me on this problem. Maybe some more info may be helpful. This program, utility, or whatever it is, is located on the D drive. I don't know the purpose of this drive and why the program was put there or if it has to be there. This seems to be a challenging problem. Thanks,Dave

MSXML was already upgraded in Win 7 - the other versions may only be needed for compatibility purposes.
You could always try uninstalling them and seeing what falls over?

A:Microsoft Core Services MSXML 4 update to 6

Are you responding to an out of date alert form Secunia PSI?
See...
http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/15049/update_msxml_4
Secunia will flag msxml 4  it as out of date because it is now end of life. msxml4 will have no more updates, therefore (barring proof of a vulnerability) there is no way to know whether or not it is now a security issue - hence the Secunia warning..

Installing msxml6 will no upgrade msxml4 but will install alongside it. The one question not answered in that thread is what is likely to break on installing mxsml4. You may well have some applications dependant on it.

I reluctantly chose to whitelist msxml4 in Secunia after checking I was on the latest available version (4.30.2117.0)

I have MSXML 4 sp2 Version 4.20.9876.0 and Secunia PSI said it needs updating. I loaded the update from Secunia but when I started the update it said that it was from an unknown publisher.
I looked at Microsoft update but there are several applications to update and a bit confused by which one to update.
I do not play games, so is this update necessary ? Do I go with Secunia's recommended update ?
My OS is W7.

Check in your Control Panel > Programs and Features first. It may still have the older versions listed there, if so, you can uninstall them from there.

Before you decide to ignore the message, I'd suggest you verify that the update actually is installed on your machine. It shows up in my add/remove programs list, along with 941833, which installed on the same date. They both also show up in my Belarc Advisor profile under the heading and subheading: Installed Microsoft Hotfixes: MSXML4SP2.You might find some useful info in this MS article: Description of the security update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0: August 14, 2007. If for some reason you decide to ignore the update message, you can right click on it in your updates list and select to hide it.

I've got a shield on my task bar telling me I have updates ready for my computer. I click on it to install, it installs, giving a description that it's "Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack (KB936181) and that the intsallation is done... then shortly after, the shield appears on the task bar again.. and so the cycle continues. Does anyone know what it is.. better yet... do you know how to get rid of it?

A:Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack

Do you use Vista or Xp?

For XP fix:

1. Download the update program "msxml4-KB936181-enu.exe" from the Microsoft site, not Windows Update.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...F5-CB46-43DF-A2B8-185639BA2807&displaylang=en

2. Run the program and tell it to remove all.

3. Reboot, and run the program again to install it.
4 Run the Windows Update file for "Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2".

After reboot, the icon should be gone and it will no longer pop up.

Vista Fix

1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel and select Programs and Features.

2. Uninstall all entrys related to Microsoft XML core services (These will be clearly marked)

3. Close everything down back to the desktop and do a search for updates
and you should get the normal 1 XML Core Services 4.0 update.

4. Uninstall this and it should fix the problem.

Good Luck!

But the prompt keeps appearing. I have researched this, tried a couple of the suggestions to fix it, but to no avail.

Can someone help me either fix or eliminate this annoying prompt. I have been unable to find out exactly what this service pack does in the first place.

Hey,

My Dell Inspiron 1501, AMD Athlon X2 (1.70 ghz) with 1000 mb ram, keeps on running into problems when installing Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2.0, aka (KB936181). My computer is Vista Basic edition.

I've been getting the message from Windows Update that I need to install this update. I go install it, and then restart my computer. Windows shows that the update's been installed already in the Update History. However, the update does not show up in the Installed Updates. THis creates the problem that Windows Update repeatedly asks me to install the update as if I've never installed it before. Does anyone know what's going on?

Hi guysmiley !

Download the install file :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Then disconnect from the internet : if wired unplug the cable, if wireless right-click the wireless tray icon and click deactivate or turn the router off. Then disable your firewall and antivirus and try to install the file. Make sure you reenable your firewall and antivirus before you reconnect to the internet and tell us how that went.

If that didn't work install this other update for XML Core Services 4.0 SP2 first. According to this thread on the ms newsgroups it seems to work for most people.

I have Windows Update set to download updates & notify me before installing. There are currently two updates pertaining to MSXML Core Service [972688 & 973687] and I followed the links to the kb articles. According to KB973687 "Prerequisites: To apply this update, you must have MSXML 3.0 or MSXML 6.0 installed. "
According to Add/Remove Programs I have MSXML 4.0 SP2 on my WinXP tab ed SP3. So my conclusion is that I should NOT install 973687. Is there some other article or info re 973687 that I don't know about?

A:MSXML Core Service Update 973687 Confusion

If Windows Update is offering you install options, they should be right for your computer and if not, they will probably fail.Turn off Automatic Updates, temporarily, do a manual check, choose Custom, not Express, see if you get the same result. It can sometimes be helpful when you know what other people have installed, so this is from my Add/Remove list:MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB925672) 2.56 MBMSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB927978) 2.56 MBMSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB936181) 2.62 MBMSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB954430) 2.67 MBMSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB973688) 2.77 MBMSXML 4.0 SP2 Parser and SDK 1.28 MBMSXML 6.0 Parser (KB933579) 1.31 MBYou can Google for info on what they're all about - too technical for me, all I do know is that versions 3.0, 4.0 and 6.0can happily co-exist, no idea why I have 4 and 6 only, nor am I bothered, either. If I needed version 3.0, I expectI would have encountered problems by now.Maybe someone else will pitch in, now I've bumped your post.If you want an independent check for necessary updates/hotfixes, the following 2 FREE programs are very useful:1. MS Baseline Security Analyzer; scans your system, tells you what's missing and offers downloads to run or save. ver 2.1.1http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en.It's also very informative generally, checks many other things.2. Belarc Advisor is a useful tool, for a really detailed profile of your computer; hardware, software, MS Hotfixes, product keys, software licences etc. It will tell you if any updates/hotfixes are missing.http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html(Best things in life are free, except computers and motorcycles).

What exactly is Microsoft MSXML 4.0? I researched it but can't determine if it's required for a home user (non developer).

Does Windows XP Service Pack 2 require MSXML 4.0?

Is it safe to delete all msxml4...dlls in system32?

Has anyone had any problems appling this security update for Microsoft XML Core servoces 4.0 for SP2 (KB954430)?
I had a look at the MS website, they give alot of work-arounds after you do this patch because of alot of issues.
Kinda makes me wonder if I want it?????

Thanks

A:Update for XML Core Services

I suggest that you read the description before you decide whether you want to omit or not.

Personally, I would say that it should be installed because it's a critical update...and then I would move on.

If I chose not to install something because there might be problems...I don't think I would ever have acquired a computer. If you think systems and Win XP have "problems", you probably ought to be transported back to 1996-1997 (my first system), when systems were much more expensive, more buggy, fewer options...and less was known about malware and system security.

The VM does not use a real CPU. That is virtualized, too, and not the one on your machine if you look at the system information inside the VM.

Ok, let me begin by saying I'm not an expert on the computer by any stretch of the word.
That being said, I've been having a problem with an update that Windows Update has been TRYING to install on my computer for at LEAST a month.
Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181)
pops up many times a day and it will SAY that it is installing (or that it has been installed) but then a few minutes later POP! There it shows up again. I've tried turning off my anti-virus (Norton 360) and installing it, and nothing works. I have LITERALLY tried installing this thing over 100 times.
Can anyone help me?

Hello to all I have read from the forum about these services that are on my computer running all the time and I guess it slows the computer. I know there is a lot of them but how do I know which of them that I really don't need to have running and which ones that I need to keep running all the time. I have Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit Sp2. Is there a list of all the services and do they explain what is their purpose, like you really don't need this so you can turn it off, and you need this one do not turn it off, for dummies like me when it comes to this.

Thank You

When I got up this a.m. my computer had shut down. When I tried to re-start it it took me several tries and it finally came up. However, I can't get most things to work right. When I'm on line it keeps giving me the message that IE has stopped working but if I wait it will usually come back. I tried to run sfc /scannow and after a few minutes that quit and wouldn't finish. At one point I got the message "scripted dx native host has stopped working". Any other suggestions would be helpful. I got some message about GFX. exe not working as well. It won't let me repair any of these things. Thanks for any help. Hopefully it will stay on long enough to figure something out.

A:Microsoft AntiSpyware Notice - services.exe

Hi doosky and welcome to TSG,

I have split your post off into your own thread as it's less confusing.

Please download and run the following program(s):

AD-AWARE

Go here and download Ad-Aware SE.

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From the main window, click Start then under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Next, deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

Now to perform a scan, click the Next button.

When the scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. To do so, right-click in the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and then click Next)

Restart your computer.
SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY

Go here and download Spybot Search & Destroy.

Install the program and launch it.

Before scanning press Online and Search for Updates .

Put a check mark at and install all updates.

Click Check for Problems and when the scan is finished let Spybot fix/remove all it finds marked in RED.

Restart your computer.

Then, after rebooting, please post another log and we’ll see what’s left to get rid of.
CLEANUP & EWIDO

Download Cleanup from Here

A window will open and choose SAVE, then DESKTOP as the destination.
On your Desktop, click on Cleanup40.exe icon.
Then, click RUN and place a checkmark beside "I Agree"
Then click NEXT followed by START and OK.
A window will appear with many choices, keep all the defaults as set when the Slide Bar to the left is set to Standard Quality.
Click OK
DO NOT RUN IT YET
Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here.
Install ewido.
During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
Launch ewido
It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
On the left side of the main screen click update
Click on Start and let it update.
DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.
Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.
Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:
Run Ewido:
Click on scanner
Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
Save the report to your desktop

Run Cleanup:
Click on the "Cleanup" button and let it run.
Once its done, close the program.
Go to Control Panel - Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.
Restart back into Windows normally now.
Do a Panda Active Scan. Be sure to save the log it creates.
Come back here and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the logs from the Ewido scan and Panda scans.

This happened awhile back my computer randomly decided that every time I logged on it would max out my CPU with the quot System quot process I found this odd and in my troubleshooting like an idiot I disabled EVERY Service I had under MSCONFIG This lead to my computer working somehow I found out that it was a hole in my old Anti-virus quot PC-Cillin quot The proxy was maxing out my System process somehow Anyway figured that out and removed it Now for the problem When I logged back on re-enabled ALL services In XP Disable'd Microsoft MSCONFIG) Services (Through After deleting PC-Cillin entirely my computer worked fine However in the process of doing this my login account Disable'd Microsoft Services (Through MSCONFIG) In XP somehow Disable'd Microsoft Services (Through MSCONFIG) In XP got screwed Basically when Disable'd Microsoft Services (Through MSCONFIG) In XP I logged on it took me to a completely different user account I later through registry and trial and error figured out that I was logging into a new profile labeled TEMP that had never existed before this fiasco So I went through registry and re-allocated all of my file paths and everything else manually It s as though I still have my old account back Just recently through my System properties under User Profiles I found that I have two owner accounts now My original and a new one The original is GB in Size and the new one is MB They re both Local but my original say s it s quot Backup quot under status It s also not been modified since November Under status the new one say s Local I have Windows XP Media Center Edition Version SP My only concerns are learning more about this and possibly re-instating my actual User Profile Oh and another thing to know none of the other profiles on my computer had this happen however I don t believe they were logged onto while Microsoft services were disabled I m an IT student going to college in the Fall for networking I understand alot about XP but there are some things I simply don t know Any help in this matter would be great I d like to learn more about it and possibly reinstate my old profile If it matters while trying to log onto my computer it only shows one Profile under my profile s name And I don t know if it s related Probably is but every now and again when I attempt to do some things my computers say s that I need administrative privileges I should have full privileges nbsp

I work on computers for a living and Missing Services. "non-critical" Microsoft got a laptop Monday afternoon the was badly infected with just about everything under the sun trojans viruses adware borderline malicious programs Spent nearly all day yesterday getting that Missing "non-critical" Microsoft Services. all removed manually fixing some system file permissions unhiding nearly everything on Missing "non-critical" Microsoft Services. C fixing some registry permissions and reinstalling IPv amp IPv to fix modified info forcing malicious dns servers The whole time I m doing this yesterday something was bothering me Decided to keep the laptop an extra day and glad I did There are a number of windows services completely deleted Windows Updates BITS Windows Defender Windows Firewall ICS Security Center Event Logging Service and probably more that I haven t noticed and missing from the registry While I know I can boot up my one of my Win virtual machines and export hives of the needed registry keys I was wondering if someone knew of a program that could repair all of these services automatically since windows can t short of a complete a complete reinstall As I was typing this up I spoke with my coworkers and they too have had some computers recently missing many services and simply reinstalled windows I d just reinstall windows myself if I knew the services were missing when I started but now it will take just as much time reinstalling updating windows as I ve already put into the machine fixing the services TL DR Someone know of a program that can repair damaged and install missing windows services I d rather avoid reinstalling windows every time I discover the services Missing "non-critical" Microsoft Services. missing or spending time manually fixing them Recent conversation m ago with co-workers lead me to believe this is going to be a common problem if it isn t already but overlooked problem For those wondering the registry is store in hives Regedit allows you to export parts all of the registry to either reg files or raw hive files There are a few differences between hives and reg files Normal reg can be modified with an text editor contain location information but lack permissions Hives can t not be modified easily contain permission info but lack location information Since hives lack location information this makes them incredibly dangerous to import if you don t know what you are doing Importing hives make all the warnings about damaging your registry with reg files look a little silly Importing hives is like comparing sticking your hand in boiling water to sticking it in lava If you import hives even slightly wrong you WILL destroy all part of your registry Just don t use hives I mention them specifically for the people that know what they are and how to use them for everyone else this is what they are and why they are dangerous in a nutshell edit Fixed a grammar mistake

Hi,

I think that the problem lies in either my ISP or elsewhere, because I have been having varying problems over the course of the night. First, it appeared as though Gmail's and my university's POP and SMTP servers were down, as I was getting error messages that the SMTP server was down when I tried to mail a message through Thunderbird.

Later, Windows Live Messenger stopped working, as did all Microsoft sites (Windows Update, MSN.com, MSN Spaces, etc.). Gmail and my university mail are both back up, but Microsoft still seems to be down and out.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem is? I've attached a screenshot of the Windows Live Messenger error code, if it helps any.

A:No System Restore! All microsoft services not working!

You didn't make a backup Windows CD when you bought the computer? I assume that you have a valid key. If you have a valid key, you could borrow a Windows disk and reinstall. I can't get to the link to download Windows ISOs anymore (legitimate ones), it seems to have disappeared.

Alternatively, if you have a Dreamspark version of Win 8 and are a student, you can install Win 8 and go on from there.

A:AMD A4-5000 "Quad Core" vs Intel Core i3-4005U Dual Core

Hmm, I guess you should read some reviews. But just from the specs the AMD has 6 GB ram instead of 4. Has a DVD burner where the Intel shows no optical drive. It only has W8 8.0 where the Intel has 8.1. But some people may prefer 8.0.

Read reviews. See how each performs. If you don't wish to use it to burn DVD then the optical drive, or lack thereof may not matter to you.

Edit: Oh, and the AMD is about $80 cheaper.

I'm trying to copy and paste an image and some text from my local machine to word on a terminal services session. For some reason it wont work, all it does is place an empty box on the screen with a cross in the corner of it, as though it knows theres a picture there but it cant display it.
If I paste into excel it works fine, same as wordpad and a few other programs ive tried. It just appears to be word that doesnt want to paste correctly.
Running office 2003 on both the local machine and on the TS and as far as i'm aware they are both patched up. Has anyone come across this at all?

You either sign on to Microsoft online account having all the benefits and downsides of their services, or you don't.
Windows 10 does allow you to create a local account, without all the MS addons yet in order to use those addons you need the online account.

I don't see the big deal. 90% of it asks first -- reporting errors, reporting user experience data, reporting search strings, etc. And, yes, of course information about your hardware is sent when you download drivers. I don't see any indication that they're collecting anything that they shouldn't be -- it's not like they're getting a copy of your documents or photos. It's just data that is used to improve the user's experience. I think they're making something out of nothing, but that's just my two cents.

Download ComboFix here :

Link 1
Link 2
* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Here is a guide on how to disable them

Click me
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt log in your next reply.

but real vnc is from spyware origins and even though now days they have converted over to the light and now is widely used it still makes you wonder....

Q: Msxml

Upon going through my Programs and Features list to weed out stuff that is not used anymore I noticed Msxml three instances of quot MSXML SP quot each one with different KB numbers in parentheses In the past I noticed I had multiple instances of Java updates that were listed and Msxml was told to remove all but the most recent one So my question is do I Msxml remove the older instances of MSXML like I was told to do with the Java EDIT After posting this I tried to dig into the issue and found this site which mentions Vista comes with MSXML comes as default However to my knowledge I never had it if I had Msxml why would I have the references -- two of which have install dates and the other is So I guess ultimately the question I should be asking is should I be concerned at all that I never had the version I ve had this laptop for a little under a year somewhere between and months and have had no issues at least not relevant to XML Thanks nbsp

hI AgAiN.... do I need MSXML 4.0 when my op sys is Vista? PlUS... what the heck is a NTKRNL>exe? And is it important that my SEP is blocking it repeatedly? Thanks agin, in advance for your kind help.

A:Msxml 4.0 etc...

Hello,

Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) provides a comprehensive set of W3C compliant XML APIs for building high-performance XML-based applications.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=15697

Secondly, could you please let us know if that is "ntoskrnl.exe" OR "NTKRNL.exe"??

ntoskrnl.exe is a core file of the kernel-mode components of any NT based Windows OS.
It contains the Cache Manager, the Executive, the Kernel, the Security Reference Monitor, the Memory Manager and the Scheduler, among other things, and is in charge of getting any NT based OS booted up properly.

For further information, go to:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/default.aspx

This process should be allowed to run unfettered rather than blocking any activity it generates.

Try Turning off the "Network Application Monitoring" from the SEPM by -

In SEPM goto "Clients" and click on any of your groups.
Open the "Policies" tab.
Click on the third option "Network Application Monitoring".
You can switch it off.

OR

Add an execption for NTOSKRNL.EXE by -

This could be triggered by either TruScan or Network Threat Protection.
How to add a TruScan exception:

Open Symantec Endpoint Protection
Select Change Settings in the left pane
Click the Configure Settings button across from Centralized Exceptions
In the User-Defined Exceptions tab, select Add...
Select TruScan Proactive threat Scan Exception
Browse to C:\WINDOWS\system32\
Select ntoskrnl.exe
Choose the desired action from the Action drop down menu
Note: For testing purposes choose "Log only"
Click Add
Close the Centralized Exceptions window.

If the TruScan exception does not resolve the issue, test by adding a Firewall rule
How to add a Firewall rule:

Open Symantec Endpoint Protection
Click the Options button across from Network Threat Protection
Select Configure Firewall Rules...
Click Add...
Type in a rule name
Under Action select Allow this traffic
Click the Applications tab
Click Browse...
Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\system32\
Select ntoskrnl.exe
Click Open
Click OK
Highlight the rule in the list
Click the up arrow button to move the rule to the top of the list
Click OK

Hope that helps!!

What is this program (MSXML4.0) for? Do I need it if I am just a home user? Can I delete it? thnx

A:Msxml 4.0

Hiya

Its the latest update from Microsoft for XML:

http://www.pcwebopedia.com/TERM/X/XML.html

If you don't edit or deign Web documents. This is a detailed look at it:

http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2002/06/05/msxml4.html

However, bear this in mind:

You can remove MSXML 4.0 and its SDK from your computer by using Add/Remove Programs. This removes the parser, the SDK, and the related menu items. However, by doing this, you might also break other existing programs that are installed on your computer and that use MSXML 4.0.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;330026

So, depending on your version of Windows, you may want to create a restore point, just in case.

These are listed in my Add/Remove Programs. Do I need both of them?

Thanks,

A:Two Appearances Of Msxml 4.0 Sp2

Hello isabellarose,

As they both have different KB numbers they most likely do different things. I would leave them both as they are.

When I ran REVO Uninstaller to remove a temporary downloaded utility I found these files listed:
MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB954430)
MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB973688)
MSXML 4.0 SP2 Parser and SDK
The "SP2" part...is that "Service Pack 2"? I'm using Windows 7 and there is no final SP as of yet. Are these files necessary and simply a holdover from VISTA?

Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) is a set of services that allow applications written in JScript, VBScript, and Microsoft development tools to build Windows-native XML-based applications. It supports XML 1.0, DOM, SAX, an XSLT 1.0 processor, XML schema support including XSD and XDR, as well as other XML-related technologies.wikipedia.comI would leave it alone

Hi 4.0 MSXML Another problem... A:Another MSXML 4.0 SP2 problem...

Hi Mopar Guy

See if trying Microsoft's suggested sequence for installing the files helps. Usually, I believe they have you do things from a clean boot setting --- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/8102...941&sid=global

(That article does have instructions for Vista, as well as for XP)

For an example thread that discusses several approaches --- http://www.fsx.co.za/showthread.php?p=6404

Sometimes you have to wonder how on earth Microsoft could make an installer for their own darn game function so poorly.
Best of luck
. . . Gary

P.S. ... whenever something seems to install in seconds on Vista, it likely hasn't installed at all, but has been caught up in the new UAC madness. When installing darn near anything, try right-clicking the installer's executable and using the "run as administrator" option.

Why do I have 3 copies of MSXML 4.0 SP2 ???
This is what I see in Control Panel/Programs and Features:
MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB936181) Microsoft Corporation 2/26/2008
MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB941833) Microsoft Corporation 2/27/2008
MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB954430) Microsoft Corporation 11/12/2008

Can I uninstall the first two and leave the last one?
I'm seeking to minimize disk space for image backup purposes.
This is on Vista-64 Home Premium.

Hmmmmm, Silence... Oh okay Grasshopper. I get it. Must be some sort of Zen thing.

Well I tried removing/uninstalling the first two copies of MSXML 4.0 SP2. It seems to have no effect at all. Disk space usage is still the same. My system seems to perform the same.

So I'm guessing it just appeared to have three copies installed when only one copy was actually installed.
