Windows Explorer keeps closing itself when i go to my external drive

Q: Windows Explorer keeps closing itself when i go to my external drive

Every time I navigate to my external HD, I get a DEP message followed by a program error message, then it just closes. I already tried turning off DEP, but I still get the error message and the same thing happens. I have tried the drive on another computer and it works fine. I've also done a virus scan and I had no viruses.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am using Windows XP SP3.

My external hard drive isn't showing up in windows explorer. It does show up in the disk manager and it says healthy.

I have tried changing the drive letter and that didn't work. I have also tried plugging it into a different usb port.

It has never done this before. What is going on?

Post the data reflected in Disk Management for this drive, please.

Both from the upper and lower levels of the Disk Management screen.

I am having a strange problem with my external hard drive for my backups When I plug the drive in it does not show up in Windows Explorer I can make it show up by going into disk management and assigning it a drive letter but the next time I plug it in I have the same hard up External Windows not drive in showing Explorer problem again Any ideas why this might be occurring Edit Turns out this is not limited to my backup drive Once I assign a letter the drives work fine They will even keep the letter if I eject them and re-insert the USB connection but any external media I plug in fails to assign a drive letter automatically the first time it is plugged in While I do not see this as External hard drive not showing up in Windows Explorer a huge problem it bothers me that Windows is not working as it used to External hard drive not showing up in Windows Explorer nor as it should Edit After reading some of the related forums I realize I should be clear about a couple things I am having this problem with drives that have already had their drivers installed in Windows I do not get a dialog saying that Windows is installing these devices because the devices have already been installed External hard drive not showing up in Windows Explorer For some reason their volume letter has been forgotten by Windows and I have to re-assign it I am being careful not to use the same letter more than once I am plugging the drives in while Windows is already running Any help would be greatly appreciated so that Windows will automatically assign a drive letter to a device instead of me having to manually do it when Windows forgets what letter it had assigned

Windows 7 x64 Quit Assigning Drive Letters Automatically helped me solve my problem. Ran an Elevated Command Prompt and typed the following commands.mountvol.exe /n
mountvol.exe /eGuess it just needed to be reset by disabling auto mounting and re-enabling it.

Using Windows Vista on one computer and Windows XP on another - same problem with both.
Therefore I believe it is a problem with my Seagate Free Agent Desk 1,00GB external hard drive. Other external hard drives work ok.

THE PROBLEM: Reading and recovering data [digital pictures] from the hard drive. No problem with saving to the drive. Explorer will recognize some files but then locks up and does not respond.
I try to copy the files to another hard drive but only get a few or none at all before it quits responding. I then tried to copy to my computer hard drive but ran into the same problem.

I have a x64 windows 7 and an iomega eGo external hard drive. The external hasn't been used in a while, it's just been sitting in my desk drawer. I'm trying to see if I have any files on it, but every time I plug it in, and try to open it, the green loading bar in Windows Explorer moves to the end but never finishes and the program (Windows Explorer) stops responding.

I don't think I have any really important files on there, I think I've moved them , so if I have to reformat it or anything it should be okay. But is there anything else I can do?

A:External Hard Drive Windows Explorer Not Responding

Try this.

Download v 0.8.1 of the drivecleanup.zip from Drive Tools for Windows.

Unzip it to a folder, say drivecleanup.

You will have two folders Win32 and x64 each containing DriveCleanup.exe for 32 bit and 64 bit respectively.

Remove all USB storage devices/printers/card readers etc., from your system (except your Keyboard and mouse) and reboot.

Right click on the DriveCleanup.exe and run as administrator. (Use the *.exe file appropriate for your bit version of Windows.).

After the clean up act, reboot , plug in your Iomega external drive and check. ( After the drive cleanup every USB device plugged it will be installed afresh.)

Put on your drive, Windows not disc Explorer does but does see external management thinking caps for this one it s a two parter Note that if I restart my system all is well for a while and the system functions as it should with these same Windows Explorer does not see external drive, but disc management does components Also I have had this same system for a year and I have multiple external hard drives Windows Explorer does not see external drive, but disc management does and flash drives that are affected which do work on other computers and this one after a restart The external drives are not part of the problem as they work fine on other systems After my computer has been on for a while and I plug in an external hard drive or flash drive to any of the front OR rear USB ports it does not show up in windows explorer or My computer I can still access the hard drive and or flash drive and transfer files to and from it if I open it in disc management It has a drive letter there refreshing unplugging and changing the drive letter does not work Now sometimes if the computer has been on for a longer while any fresh contact with the USB port by a hard drive or flash drive will cause the computer to shut down completely None of these problems occur on a fresh reboot nbsp

I find that my external hard drive (Western Digital Desktop drive) is inaccessible. When I try to access it through Windows Explorer, It does not show the device at all. The HDD is detected by the device manager in disk drives.

The HDD is not detected in other 2 computers too. tried in a mac and windows laptops.

I ran CHKDSK. At the beginning, it gave me the following message: "Warning! F parameter not specified. Running CHKDSK in read-only mode." It claimed to fix some things at the end of step 2, but it didn't help.

Device Manager thinks that the device is running properly.

I rebooted the machine but that didn't help either.

I ran chkdsk/f as suggested for one of the similar problems in another thread, but for that lucky guy, the drive was visible in windows exploreer.

Any ideas?

Pls pls help me a it has all my important data in it.

So I have an interesting (maybe not) problem. I tried searching for a fix on here, but the issues seem to be different. I have a Western Digital Mybook external hard drive, that I use to hold my music and video files. It is formatted, working properly, and shows up in disk management. However whenever I turn on my computer it refuses to show up in Windows Explorer. I can unplug the USB connection and replug it in and it will show up, however if I close windows explorer and re-open it the hard drive will no longer come up under "computer". I can access the folder through an icon I created on the start page, and I can play the files in iTunes, it just refuses to show up in Windows Explorer. This is driving me crazy, any ideas? Thanks in advance.

A:External Hard Drive Refuses to Stay in Windows Explorer

Have you tried plugging the drive into a non-partisan, third party PC if available?

And did work before correctly in a previous Windows OS?

Is the little indicator light blinking?

Is the drive and/or files somehow hidden?

There are a LOT of different reasons as to why an external hard drive isn't working properly, more details are a must.

Hello I've been having a problem with my Lacie TB external HDD for some time now I'll just precise that it's a USB disk and has an on off switch I apologize if the post is long but I'm gonna put in everything I can think of The disk worked fine for a few months then at one point it started hard clicking and soon after I external when drive. freezes Windows accessing explorer hard was unable to transfer any data in or out of the disk without causing the transfer to hang after about s I sent it back to Windows explorer freezes when accessing external hard drive. Lacie for repair and Windows explorer freezes when accessing external hard drive. long story short after they quot lost quot my disk they sent me a brand new one but apparently the repair centre wasn't informed so I received my old disk too repaired So I now have similar HDDs My problem is - at first when I tried to run the format tool preloaded on Windows explorer freezes when accessing external hard drive. the disk to format the disk before use it hanged and the progress bar didn't move The only way to close the window was to shut down the disk That happened on both disks and they were then listed as RAW in disk manager - I tried to format or delete the volume using window's built in tool but when I select my format options and click ok it just gets back to the disk manager with the hourglass mouse pointer as if it's doing something although there is no progress bar or anything It just stays there for hours although it should be super fast as the disk is empty I tried different softwares like partition magic but they just hang on quot detecting devices quot as soon as I turn the disk on Same thing for disk manager if I open it after having turned on the disk it just hangs on quot connecting to virtual service quot Again same with both disks - I then tried to format the disks using my dad's xp laptop and the software Partition Wizard and it formated both disks into NTFS in seconds That leads me to believe that the fault comes from my laptop I partitioned one of the disks with GB of FAT and the rest in NTFS to see if it would change anything on my laptop - For both disks and both NTFS and FAT when I try accessing them from quot Computer quot I sometimes can get in the disk folder but when I try to copy a file in it the tranfer bar just stalls on quot transferring file quot without even starting the transfer If I try clicking somewhere the transfer windows blanks out and freezes followed by the quot Computer quot window then windows explorer itself If I turn off the disk then everything returns back to normal Sometimes just trying to access the disk folder freezes everything and that can affect wmp or any other program open they just freeze until the disk is turned off This happens every time Not finished - At one point it kinda started working if I had the little software Lacie USB Boost activated which is supposed to boost your transfer speed Here's a copy of what I sent Lacie I spent months with the support team and I'm not closer to resolving that They replied to this post by saying that there is no known issue with the usb boost quot If the USB Boost is activated I can now transfer files to the disk however I get the exact same error message xd as the one I described in my very first post if I try to transfer large files to the disk although it did that for a Mb file This problem is the same as the one experienced by this person BSOD when transfering Large files to external HD He has the same disk as me and it was suggested that he uninstalled the USB boost or changed the extension of the FNETURPX sys to make it unusable I did that which brings me to the nd problem If I do disable the USB Boost I revert back to the message saying that the file is no longer in its folder and I can't create a new folder on the disk either I have tried to reenable the usb boost and transferring works again but for large files I get the stop error message again quot I have now uninstalle... A:Windows Explorer Problems When Accessing External Hard Drive

Is this a hard drive that you bought pre-configured, or is it a hard drive that you've bought a drive caddy for? If it's pre-configured, then I'd suspect an issue with the hardware of the external drive. If it's your caddy, then I'd suggest checking the jumper settings on the hard drive to ensure that they're correctly set.

So, my external worked fine the other day, but now it just won't work. I connect it, try to open it in My Computer, and the window freezes. The rest of the computer is fine. It doesn't show up in the My Computer folder either. I have to disconnect it to unfreeze it. It unfreezes immediately when I do, and says "You must format this hard drive to use it. How'm I supposed to format it if it's not in? Plus, I have important stuff in it, so I really don't want to.

What can I do, what's the issue?

TB external hard drive is spinning when turned on however my laptop is not registering the HD properly- previously it would come up with the hard drive name G VERBATIM however now it just says G Local Disk and comes up with the error message quot One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it quot It emits Windows hard Explorer drive when external is attached/accessed crashes a tone when the HD is removed so obviously it is acknowledging the device and it does still work but it just isn't opening at all Whenever I go into Windows Explorer and attempt to access the drive or even just right click on the drive Explorer freezes and I have to reboot I am running Vista Home Premium SP however the same problem is occurring on an XP laptop Ideally I don't want to lose what's on the HD there's about GB worth Much of this is avi's though which going by other threads could be a factor Any help would be much appreciated

A:Windows Explorer crashes when external hard drive is attached/accessed

Hi,

Normally in this situation I would recommend that you went into the Device Manager console and tried to uninstall then re-install the driver for the hard drive; but since you experience this on another machine as well it seems as though there are one of two possible causes - either the filesystem may have become corrupt to some extent, or the PCB in the external enclosure has developed some sort of fault. I would say try and take out the hard drive if possible (and if you don't mind potentially voiding any warranty that may remain), and install it either in an available desktop or another external enclosure and see whether or not you can access your data. If you cannot I would say the cause is the former unfortunately.

Hope this helps.

Jon.

I was wondering if any of you could help me with a little problem. I just changed computers, and copied all of my files from XP onto an external hard-drive. Any suggestions?

Hey, I am having problems with my other computer suddenly closing both Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer applications, such as Control Panel, My Computer, etc...(Windows XP Home Edition)
When i click on either one, lets say the my computer icon, a pop up of the my computer folder thing flashes for a split second then disappears, the computer freezes for about a second, shows only the desktop, then a few seconds later the icons start appearing on my desktop and my start taskbar comes back. The screen is back to normal with no lag, but the my computer pop up is no longer there. The same thing happens with internet explorer, but it just happens alot quicker.
Does anyone know what could possibly be the problem of this, and maybe how to fix it? Thank You in advance.

For your Firefox problem, try the following.
Start> Mozilla Firefox> Mozilla Firefox(Safe Mode). This starts Firefox without
any extensions and the default theme. If this solves the problem, then it is an
extension or theme effecting Firefox. If that doesn't help, create a new profile.
Your profile may have become corrupt.

Hi
I have recently had a lot of pc problems with processes using 100% cpu and runtime errors. I took my pc to my local repair shop and it ended up that they completely wiped my pc and reinstalled windows xp home.
I use the mozy online backup service so thankfully most of my files are safe and I have restored them.

Everytime I try to go into "my pictures" where I store all my photographs, I get the error message "To help protect your computer, windows have closed this program. Name: Windows explorer"

Is there anything I can do to prevent this happening?

Thanks

Has anyone encountered a situation where an MPEG file will abruptly close a Windows Explorer window. The file will do this both over my network or while trying to access it from a CD on one of my computers. The PC that has the file on it has no problem with keeping it up on a Windows Explorer Window, or running it with a media program. Both computers are running the same version of Windows XP Professional. As soon as the folder is accessed over the network, Windows Explorer closes on the computer. The same situation occurs when the MPEG file is accessed by CD. The file has been scanned for viruses with multiple checkers, and seems fine. The MPEG file also plays fine in a portable DVD player. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

A:Windows Explorer abruptly closing

Welcome to TSG....

The MPEG file if it has a corruption in it it might play ok in a player but it might crash in a Windows environment. Have you tried this file on another computer that is either on the network and also off the network?

Can you open the MPEG file with an editor program to check to see if it is a good file? Try copying it from the CD-R or DVD to the hard drive to a special directory you have set up. If it does not copy then the file is no good.

A:Explorer Windows Auto Closing

It's a bit tedious as a troubleshooting method, but often the only effective way to sort such things out.

Try "clean booting":

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup group" on the general page.

See this link for detailed information:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in “selective” startup mode – you should note what these are before beginning. They will need to be de-selected again.

A:Windows Explorer Closing and Restarting

Hi -

The appcrash you listed had a 0xc0000005 exception - a memory access violation. The problem here is more than likely old and new drivers clashing - then you crash.

Your Windows Explorer executable file has a timestamp of 4907deda = Tue Oct 28 23:56:10 2008 and the MS kernel driver t/s is 4549bd80 = Thu Nov 02 05:42:24 2006.

The problem here is that your system is not updated with Vista SP1.

The installation of SP1 must be the top priority. Have you ever tried to install it? Has it shown in Windows Updates?

Regards. . .

Hello All!
For some reason today my computer likes to close the internet browsers on it's own. I use IE- the version used in 2004. When i've been playing games, doing research, anything the windows close- all of them. And then a window opens to say i've chosen to end the unresponsive program and asking me to send an error report. I never chose to close the program, it happens on its own. Do I have too many things running at once or any other ideas? Thank you much :0)

If I interpret this correctly, I think there is a problem with the AUDIODEV.DLL but I have no idea how to fix this. Please tell me if I'm on the right track and how I might proceed. Thanks

A:Windows Explorer repeatedly closing and restarting

audiodev.dll is an unwanted file that is known to cause problems. Though it's a microsoft stuff, I still suggest you to scan for malware.

Perform a full system scan using: Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download and some other good anti virus software as well.

If this doesn't solve the problem, follow this guide: Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

Evening everybody Got a small head-scratcher here I dual-boot Well I can't really say 'dual-boot' what would be the expression for nine OS's on the same machine Seven would be what septa-boot Eight octa-boot Nine well never mind I run Windows XP Professional and eight 'Puppies' I've had the copy of XP Pro for several years and I've lost track of the number of times I've re-installed it when everything starts slowing down Can't be bothered with doing all the investigation and repair guff I know the symptoms by now so it's quicker for me to re-install especially since I did a 'slipstreamed' SP disc quite some time ago I re-install - times a year the last occasion was back in March FYI I also run the 'Deskman' Powertoy multiple desktops for those of you who might not be aware of what it does I've got so used to virtual desktops in Linux it got so I was lost without them every time I booted into XP This time round everything has been behaving itself when around a fortnight ago I started getting a hiccup with Windows Explorer Every time I go into it it's all good I do what I need to do upon exiting however the system is now freezing up for a short time perhaps seconds or so followed by this message - 'Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close to protect your computer Windows computer'... protect your down to Explorer 'closing We Windows Explorer 'closing down to protect your computer'... are sorry for the inconvenience ' This disappears upon OK'ing it but the system remains frozen for perhaps another minutes then I get the same 'encountered a problem' message about the Dr Watson Post-mortem debugger Is this a regular problem I recall coming across this a long while ago when I was running a copy of XP Home back in it was constantly doing it Since switching to XP Pro a year or so later I've not had the problem until now I wonder if it's time to re-burn my slipstreamed XP SP disc It has had a Windows Explorer 'closing down to protect your computer'... fair bit of use Any information or suggestions will be much appreciated BTW What exactly does the Dr Watson Post-mortem debugger do write to the error logs Mike

A:Windows Explorer 'closing down to protect your computer'...

Windows XP explorer is more buggy then later versions of Windows OS explorer it does crash more often run Sfc /scannow command to repair any damage Windows system files. Also damage media file can cause this issue when Windows try to render the thumbnail for the damage media file Windows Explorer may froze or close disable viewing thumbnails to see problem will get resolves if it does then you will need to find out which media file is damage.
Open Control Panel. (Classic View)
Click on the System icon.
Click on the advanced system settings link.
Under Performance, click on the Settings button.
In the Visual Effects tab, uncheck "Show thumbnails instead of icons."
When the thumbnail view is enabled in Windows Explorer, it will generate thumbnails for your video files. If something goes wrong during this process, then Explorer may crash. Causes of failures can be corrupt media files or buggy codec. Remove third party codec packs. Automatically diagnose and fix Internet Explorer or Windows applications when it freezes or stops responding caused by codecs when playing video files. Download Microsoft Fix it utility.
Buggy program extension can also make Windows Explorer crash or froze uninstall programs you installed before this issue started.

Hey people again, this time the problem lies with my PC at home! Whenever I'm using Windows Explorer and just going through my Hard Drive, after a few mins i get the "windows explorer has encountered a problem" message and it closes the explorer window, the whole screen goes blue for a second and then the desktop comes back and the systray looks as if it's loading the icons again in the bottom right! I installed ZoneAlarm a couple of weeks ago and I don't know whether that's causing a problem/conflict but I've had to uninstall MSN because it just keeps logging out and logging in!

HELP!!

A:Windows Explorer Closing Error - Constantly

Set a restore point and back up any important data (you do this already right ). The we can try using the system file checker (ie sfc command). This will require your Windows CD and afterwards you will need to reinstall all your microsoft updates.

To do this simply go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

As I said, make sure you back up and set a restore point.

Let me know how you go.

A:Internet Explorer Keeps Closing In Windows Vista!

Internet Explorer will stop working almost all the time cause a conflict with a Plugin or Active X...Go to "MSconfig".Click on Start > Type in "Start Search" MSconfig" (no quotes) and hit Enter...Go to the Startup tab and look for "OmniPage" and uncheck it...Go to internet options...Start > Control panel > Left side of window click on classic view > Internet options. In "General" tab, and look for browsing history and click on "delete..." Delete all...Go to "Programs" tab and click on "Manage Add-ons". Add-ons are active-x controls that change the way Internet Explorer is used. These can be toolbars, plug-ins, and other code that can interfere with the operation of IE. Select any suspicious add-on names from the name list and select disable to prevent the add-on code from opening when IE is opened. Finally go click the "Advanced" tab. Remove the checkmark from "Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)", editAlso unchek "Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks".Restart and the error should not come back. These errors are probably caused by browser extensions that were added through spyware or adware.Maybe a look in here, and posting your log will help if this didn't.Hope it helps Mav

A:Windows explorer closing and slow internet

Just in the last week or so, when I click on a linked page off of a page, it will open the link for 5 seconds, then POOF! it closes and I am back to the original page.

This is happening on almost every site I go to. I'm thinking it might be a setting under Internet Options | Tools, but can't figure it out.

I've done massive searching for something similar, but can't find anything.

Any ideas? I don't have Macromedia Flash installed, and possibly some of those "other little programs" that like to load themselves....could it be something like that?

I can provide links if needed, but I don't have this log file everyone seems to be using.

I'm running XP PRO SP2....and I run AdAware SE, AVG and Microsoft AntiSpyware.....

Thanks from a new poster!

I have several protective programs running..
like "Adware, Fix It 5,SpywareStopper"
but I haven't found any viruses...

When I run SpyBot, it comes up with about 23-25 entries AND I stall when I get to create a restore point. After a lon---g period of time the (not responding)
goes on.

Another problem is that WinRAR opens but closes unexpectedly...

Are these problems possibly related or do I have different issues???

Thanks for any help!

A:Creating a Restore Point & Windows XP Explorer Windows closing

http://forums.techguy.org/t110854.html Follow this link to Rollin Rog Security Tools It is hard to tell from your report exactly what spy ware programs you are running . Scroll down the page to Parasitic , Download Ad-Aware SE , Spy Bot Search and Destroy , Spy Ware Blaster . Setup and update according to the tutourials. Go to Panda Active Scan or other online virus scanner and run a scan . If you do not have an anti virus program aboard go to Grisoft AVG and download the personal free edition . Use these programs only for now and shut down any other spyware / malware programs you mayhave running . After using the programs from Rollin Rog Security Tools come back and let us know how things are now running .

I have autoplay completely disabled.
I realize that Windows Explorer (WE) will open if a new dvd, usb drive, etc is connected/inserted.

But 'I open' all of the WE windows I use but "Win7 64 will close that WE window if the thing is removed, even when it did NOT create/open it" !!

Anyone know how to disable this 'automatic' CLOSING of WE by Win 7??

Thanks for any help!! , this is a pain (and infinitely stupid on Win7's part) !!

A:How to stop Windows Explorer closing for removable Disks!

Unfortunately there is no feature built into windows 7 that can stop this from happening, there could be a 3rd party application somewhere. I personally think there was a-lot of stupidity on Microsoft side when they built windows explorer

A:Windows Explorer closing down whenever I open any files in My Document

Hi all,

I thought I would follow up with my findings and solution to my Windows Explorer nightmare as I am quite pleased with myself for persevering and fixing it. It was right under my nose all along but it was just knowing how to go about it.

Basically, "Event Viewer" gave me all the information I needed. In the event tree I clicked on "Windows" then "Applications" which gave a list of apps with either a blue info icon to the left of the information, an exclamation mark in red for error or a yellow exclamation mark for warning. There were plenty of red error icons which I hoped would be logs of Windows Explorer closing down, and sure enough they were. On following the "Failing Application Path" c:\program files\ASUSWSShellExt64.dll I found the highlighted shell extension, Which is basically Asus Web Storage. I promptly uninstalled the program and have had no crashes whatsoever, yee haaaaa!

Hope this helps someone else someday as it almost blew my brains out

Martin.

A:Windows explorer hangs when closing Photo Gallery

Update:
Same now happened in the Windows Live Gallery: I was previewing photos and rotating some of them, so first it refused to rotate a couple suggesting they were opened by another program (they weren't) and then as I moved to another image, it showed "Saving..." and just hung there. Closing didn't help (and no messages that it was not responding). I used Task Manager to kill the process - the Live Gallery disappeared from the desktop but remained in the Task Manager processes. I was able to open another instance of Live Gallery and do some operations before it hung again. After killing it with Task Manager again, I had two processes in the Task Manager and none on the desktop. I closed all programs and tried logging off but it didn't log me off, the mouse was moving though. After restart, it turns out some programs didn't actually close (Firefox offered to recover a crashed session).

No error messages in Event viewer

I'll run checkdisk later as it is taking ages, but would appreciate suggestions. Thanks
Vit

no matter what I configure in Autoplay ...
- whenever I say "safely remove mass storage" (in my case it's a SD Card) the explorer window is closed
- it only stays open when I select another drive before "safe removal"
- it also stays open when I just pull the SD Card (unsafe remove)

the drive itself is a combined mass storage reader built into the Desktop PC and ist drive letters are always shown in the explorer

Is there a regkey to tell Windows to just let it open ?

A:inhibt windows explorer from closing when SD card removed

In its infinite wisdom Windows assumes the user is finished using File Explorer [renamed from Windows Explorer in Win7] and to save resources closes that window. It really doesn't bother me as I usually have two or more instances of File Explorer running anyway [for access to External USB HDDs].

I have 3 external USB drives and 1 USB DVD drive as well as 3 HDD ATA drives. Mucho disk space. Recently bought a 80 gb pata drive and installed it in an external enclosure connected by USB. In my explorer-files (EF) app, I see all my drives but my new one. I formatted the drive and set up it's partition. I used the Device Mgr and see the drive as Disk 3 and assigned the letter K but it's still not showing in my EF. I also run Power Desk Pro 7 and it doesn't see drive K either.

The only funny thing about this install is the enclosure connects to the USB port via a USB A-male to A-male cable. Most devices connect to USB via a USB D-male to A-male cable. Had to buy that cable to test the drive!

Thanks, olrob (aged 76 and still pc alert)

A:Cant see external drive in Explorer

I connected the external drive described above to my laptop running Windows 7 and it was seen by both my Explorer-Files and my PDP 7 apps. So the drive is ok and the cable is ok. It has to be the XP os handling of the device.

If i buy a new drive western digital my passport ultra the will the name be again " my passport" of the new drive?and will the name of the old drive be still "my passport1" when i connect the old drive at the same time?
Can i change the name of the new drive to "my passport2" and will it keep this name after disconnecting and connecting both drives?

Hi,
I'm running a Dell Inspiron 6400 with Windows XP Home on it.
My problem is as such:
When ever I close an explorer window, the taskbar and desktop icons disappear for a few seconds...Its quite annoying, and it also closes any other Windows I have open.
Programs don't seem to be affected...

Has anyone come across this problem? And are there any solutions?
Much thanks for any help rendered.

Hi to all I'm sure a lot of people are annoyed with the same bug it apprently happens on all Windows editions When you open explorer and activate the preview pane using the button on the uper right to and preview re-opening How size pane of closing Windows 7 when keep - the the Explorer? you can define the size like any pane by clicking and draging the vertical border line But when you close explorer and open it again the size is not kept and the preview pane is very big you have to click and drag everytime to resize it It doesn't happen if you double-click on computer it only happens when you click on explorer icon which opens the libraries location the default location i'm not completly sure but i've only seen that in this way Windows 7 - How to keep the size of the preview pane when closing and re-opening Explorer? It seems that Explorer doesn't read correctly the REG BINARY of quot ReadingPaneSizer quot or maybe the values quot PageSpaceControlSizer quot or quot PreviewPaneSizer quot in the key quot HKCU Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer Modules GlobalSettings Sizer quot when it opens but it writes it apparently Windows 7 - How to keep the size of the preview pane when closing and re-opening Explorer? correctly when you manual resize the pane and the value isn't change before manual action even when explorer Windows 7 - How to keep the size of the preview pane when closing and re-opening Explorer? opens and display preview pane in a different size And the last thing when you open explorer activate preview pane resize preview pane deactivate it close explorer open explorer again activate preview pane the size is the good one preserved from previous explorer window So question is does someone know a way to fix this really annonying bug I can't activate the preview pane in default profile for my domain users if there is this bug Thanks for your help

Whenever I open a certain folder on one of my external hard drives, a message pops up saying "windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close". The folder is one of several, all containing avi files, opening any of the other folders doesn't cause this problem. If I ignore the message (ie don't click send/don't send report) then I can usually use the folder and files within as normal, but if I click, then any windows of any drives I had open all close. I used flash disinfector but the problem remains. Please help! Thank you!

Lately windows explorer has been crashing every time I turn on my external hard drive. And since then I also seem to have lost all my cookie information since I now have to reapply my passwords. I have created a log using VistaForums SysInfo but I really don't know what information I should provide the forum with to solve this problem. I was using a program that searches for duplicate files when the crash happened. Also as soon as I turn off the external Hard Drive explorer seems to work fine and I am always being asked to format the external hard drive.

I tried a different drive in the enclosure and it works fine but it's NTFS 40 gig. I would put the 60 gig inside my system but it's an IDE drive and everything inside is SATA. I tried to change the file system to NTFS using EASEUS partition manager but got an error ?? This program also sees the drive and the files on it. I also tried moving the USB drive to a different system with the same results. Any ideas how I can access the data files on this 60 gig drive?

Many thanks.

Ugh, ive been looking all over the internet for a solution to this. Anyway, im borrowing my friend's external hard drive to transfer some stuff from my laptop to my desktop when my laptop for whatever reason crashed. Now when i started my laptop back up, explorer doesn't recognize the external hard drive. However, disk management seems to be able to recognize the external hard drive as a separate disk. Does anybody know how i can get my explorer to recognize the external hard drive?

A:Can't get explorer to recognize external hard drive

Since it's recognized by Disk Management, I'll guess one of two things

1. See if this might help How to Cleanup and Remove old USB Storage Drivers

2. Otherwise, it could be filesystem corruption on the disk. Have you tried connecting it to a different computer to see if it works? If it still fails on other computers as well could be windows sees the disk when connected but doesn't recognize a valid filesystem any longer so doesn't mount the logical volume. Try TestDisk for partition/data recovery

Hello I was playing an audio file from my external hard drive when the usb cord disconnected After reconnecting the computer makes a sound indicating the drive is recognized but it does not drive explorer visible not in External hard appear in Windows Lovely So I went through the Device Manager where the device is visible and External hard drive not visible in explorer tried disabling enabling uninstalling reinstalling External hard drive not visible in explorer No success in gaining access to the drive through explorer I External hard drive not visible in explorer opened Disk Management in Computer Management and here is where I stand staring at my now unallocated drive The drive is full of data that I can't lose which makes me hesitant to take action in Disk Management The harmless assign drive letter option doesn't appear to be available I guess I will just attach some screen caps and then see if anyone wants to walk me through the best solution to regain access to my drive without compromising my files Just to be clear I'm running Windows and don't have access to another computer Thanks in advance and let me know if there if any more information is needed

A:External hard drive not visible in explorer

Hello, and Welcome

Detach the External Drive. Download and run USBdeview. Delete any mention of your external drive. It will also show any old devices that have been installed. You can delete any Vendor Specific device that is not your mouse, keyboard, network adapter, or printer. Reboot the computer and attach the external drive. Is it detected?

If using USBdeview does not work, download Partition Find and Mount. Let it do a Fast Scan first If it does not find anything do the Normal scan. If it finds any partitions, it will let you mount them as a virtual drive. Then you can copy your data over to your internal drive.

If Partition Find and Mount does not work then we will try TestDisk.

We are running Windows XP Professional on one of our home PCs. About two months ago, the CD RW drive started misbehaving. It keeps opening and closing for no reason and then the PC performance becomes slow. Finally, it freezes. I think it is a probably a software problem but I have no idea how to fix it. The hardware is an HP Pavillion 8986.

I'm in the process of getting a new computer and wanted to scan some old files before putting them on to my new computer I decided to scan my old computer and my external hard drive I used Bitdefender Rescue CD to scan both my old Computer runs Windows and my external hard drive Western Digital My Passport Terabyte The scan on my old computer came up clean no infected files The scan on my external drive listed two infected files EXPLORER EXE Trojan Agent VB H yudald bat Trojan Generic These two files reside directly on the drive if the external drive was drive E the External and Hard on Trojans EXPLORER.EXE Drive yuldald.bat two files would show up as E EXPLORER EXE and E yudald bat The two files were also protected operating system files After the initial scan I decided to view the files myself from Windows I rebooted into Windows went into Folder Options EXPLORER.EXE and yuldald.bat Trojans on External Hard Drive and unchecked the Hide protected operating system files Recommended option I EXPLORER.EXE and yuldald.bat Trojans on External Hard Drive could see both files on the drive I decided to scan the files with Avast and they both showed up as trojans from that scan as well During this process I accidentally clicked the EXPLORER EXE file Windows displayed a message saying that the file did not exist at E EXPLORER EXE I quickly shutdown my computer and rebooted the Bitdefender Rescue CD I scanned my external hard drive again This time only the yudald bat file showed up I deleted that file I scanned my old computer again it showed up clean no infections I scanned my external hard drive a third time it showed up clean no infections I can't find any information about yudlad bat being a trojan I did find some information on the EXPLORER EXE trojan I read that EXPLORER EXE trojan may install additional programs on your computer may be shown running multiple times when view your processes in the task manager and may slow your computer down My computer has none of those symptoms Here are my questions Is it possible those files are actually part of the external hard drive and not trojans just false positives When I clicked on EXPLORER EXE did the trojan hide itself else or in one of my personal files like an Excel file I know the additional scans found nothing but that was really odd when I clicked on it for Windows to say it wasn't there Why was my external hard drive infected but not my computer I plug that external drive into my computer often enough to think the computer would be infected as well What is the likelihood my personal files are infected I have Excel files jpgs pngs txt files video files and sol files from flash games What's the likelihood those types of files would get infected I want to put my old files on my new computer but know I don't feel safe doing so What scans can I use to be more confidant my old files are clean or should I even put them on my new computer even after scanning at all I'm interesting especially in booting a live CD Linux to scan my files from there with other things than Bitdefender instead of on the Windows OS but what flavor of Linux would I use and what antivirus software

A:EXPLORER.EXE and yuldald.bat Trojans on External Hard Drive

Hi there,I'll try to answer your questions to the best of my ability.1. It's hard to tell since explorer.exe is a legit file, but it can also be malware using that name. The best way to determine is to submit it to an analysis service like VirusTotal to check it against multiple scanners.2. It is unlikely, but malware usually don't infect documents (unless it's ransomware, then they encrypt the files).3. Was the external drive plugged into other computers at one point? Just plugging it once into an infected computer is enough to get it infected.Which antivirus are you using? There can be a second possibility that your machine is infected and the infection went undetected, therefore infecting your external HD you are using.4. Images, videos and documents usually do not get infected by malware. I think they should be safe to recover using a live Linux CD, for example. I'm not very sure about Flash games though - you might want to submit them to VirusTotal for analysis to make sure they are clean.5. There are multiple AV vendors offering rescue CDs - one of the most popular ones is Kaspersky Rescue Disk.Regards,Alex

Hi

I recently upgraded from Vista Home to Windows 7 Professional. All is working fine except for the fact that Explorer does not recognise the old folders and files created using Vista on the external USB hard drive. In other words, any files saved prior to the installation of Windows 7 are not recognised.

Any new files are saved to the drive and are "seen" by W7 as normal. When I use FreeCommander this recognises all of the old folders and files (and allows me to access them (thank goodness!)) but they are are greyed out.

Any thoughts?

Regards

David

I did a factory reset, and now do not see the Western Digital external hard drive listed under File Explorer.

Prior to the factory reset, it was listed as Drive F.

Would be grateful if you can tell me how to get it to show up again in the list!

Thanks.

Ok. For the past couple of weeks whenever I try to either right-click, access the properties, or scan the drive with Norton, my portable drive crashes Explorer. Its a 300 GB Seagate hard drive that I got a year ago. At first I suspected malware, but when I run my full system scans Norton 360 reports back that everything is all fine and good. So I was wondering if Norton is overlooking something or if it has something to do with the hardware. Oh, and Explorer seems to only crash when I do those things, I've had this computer for about 8 months and It has never done that before. So I was wondering if anybody can help me.

A:Solved: USB external drive is crashing Explorer on Vista

disable norton before attaching your external drive...

see if that will help

Hi there,

I am having a problem with explorer.exe. When I click on certain folders in My Documents, the CPU Usage rockets and it takes ages for the next page to materialise. This is most frequently happening when navigating around my External HD, which for reference is a 320GB Seagate FreeAgent Desktop USB. I have defragmented the C: an D: drives of my computer, despite the fact that the analysis reveals that I don't need to. I have run Spybot S&D, which says that I have nothing malicious to worry about on my computer. Finally, even though I have disconnected my external HD, the slowness has spread to my main hard drives.

I would very much like to know what is going on, and hope that someone might be able to help me. I have attached my HijackThis log file.

Kind regards,
Nyapsta.

A:External 60GB drive is empty and shows 10MB in Explorer

try this,
Go to my computer and right click on the drive you have set up as slave drive. Go to properties-then security-then click on advanced tab near the bottom of that page-then click on owner tab-then on edit-then choose the owner you want to have access in this case you Administrators mine says (Tman-PC\Administrators) and then click apply. You will have to close all the windows down and reopen them and you should be able to see anything that was hidden or unaccessable on the drive.

Hope t works for you.

A few days ago my Seagate 3TB external hard drive failed without warning and I've been trying to recover it. I ran Test Disk but it didn't appear to locate any partitions. I tried Minitool Partition Wizard and while the Partition Recovery Wizard did locate the partition, identify it as NTFS and even shows me all the files it never adds 'recover partition' as an operation so I can't run it. What do I need to do?

Here's the disk in Partition Magic (drive N)

Here's it in Disk Management

Here's it in Explorer

I feel like I'm close because Partition Wizard can show me the files but I just can't browse the drive.

Hi,

Every time I navigate and browse explorer all my hard disk drives spin up and remain active for a long time.. The only hard disk drives I need active are solid state drive which hosts my operating system and drive letter E which hosts all my personal files.. I access that drive a lot to stream music and watch movies but everytime I open My Computer or browse hard disk directory all my hard drives become active? It is very annoying and unnecessary since they're synchronized backup drives so hosts identical information.. how can I prevent explorer reading (spinning) up my disk drives when navigating my computer and other parent directories?

Probably a feature of explorer, I myself have long abandoned explorer for file management, I highly recommend Total Commander found here for testing, just has simple nag click when first running it, bought it ages ago myself:

Total Commander - home

Using TC, drives only spin up again if I select them on either pane after parking occurs.

There are other file managers, my favorite site for generic utility browsing/downloads is softpedia.com

I recently got a new monitor (samsung sync master s27b350), and when I connect it to my laptop (alienware m11x r2) it works perfectly fine through either vga or hdmi

UNTIL I close the laptop's lid. Then the image on the external monitor either flickers or goes completely black (I have settings to 'do nothing' on lid close).

All my drivers appear as up to date and working, and with the lid open, there is no flickering.

I have tried several different cables of each hdmi and vga all with the same results

This didn't happen for the first 3 days with the new monitor, but then the problems started shortly after

what could be causing this problem?

thanks!
