Change a Section within many file names?

Q: Change a Section within many file names?

Hi,

We have about 2,000 files consisting of Word and Adobe documents Saved As 'AO blah blah blah.doc' (the character O) when they should have been Saved As 'A0 blah blah blah.doc' (the number zero).

Is there a way to do a mass Find and Replace on part of a file name?

Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Change a Section within many file names?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have my phone plugged into my laptop via USB, I need to change the tags (Artist/album details) on some of the music I have on there but the options are not available. If I plug in the SD card directly those options are now available but i'd rather not have to switch off the phone and take the SD card every time I update the music on my phone.

I use and recommend this software here:

It will make it very easy to change the tags of each song.

Hi,
First time this has happened. All the file names were changed to 6capital letters, an ambersand, a number, period, file extension. Example PROJEC~1.XLR. Now I don't know what the files are and I will have to open each one and find another way to save them.

But - What Happened? Why did this happen? Some new 'update'?

How can I change it back?

Sorry, and thanks,

The filenames with the tilde are known as "short filenames." It looks like the file system type for the disc has gotten changed to ISO without the long filename support. Try imgburn freeware. In the file type settings it has check boxes for long filenames, directory depth etc..

I have Windows Vista on a Lenovo SL400. Recently I have had an issue where I can't change file names, copy and paste document, or restore files from the recycle bin. I have tried to change permissions and it does not work. The 'Read Only' box changes itself to being colored in even after I change it. I tried to do a system restore and get this message:

System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer?s system files and settings were not changed

Details:

An unspecified error occurred during System Restore

Also, when I did a little checking, a file got deleted from my registry:

Don't know what it is and haven't found anything helpful online. Please help.

My stupidity caused the problem. Hope someone can figure an easy way out. I can fix it the hard way.

I have a folder of word documents (hundreds). My wife has a similar file (also hundreds).

All the documents are recipes. Mine all have the word "recipe" as the first word of the document title. My wife's does not.
example: Recipe Gooey butter cake.doc vs. Gooey butter cake.doc

I want to combine the two files and they will automatically alphabetize themselves in a single file....if.... I can delete the word recipe from one set of documents.

Anybody know of a quick way to accomplish this?

TIA

Steve

Ok, I know how to change the names by going to the control panel and editing the settings in the 'System' folder. I've done that already. My 'Computer Name', 'Full Computer Name', and 'Computer Description' have been changed to what I want. But now when I open the C:\Users folder in the administrator account, the main user's name is the name of the shop I bought my laptop from. This is the name I would like to change. The folder has a padlock on it and I've unselected the read-only function twice, but it didn't work. It asked me for confirmation, then permission, then it spent 15 seconds 'applying the attributes to the files. However, once it was finished, I hit OK and re-opened the properties window for the same folder and the 'Read-Only' function was selected again. Why can't I turn off the read-only function and how can I change this name?

Any ideas are appreciated, thanks.

hi, i want to replace vista with win 7. i don't want any remnants of vista so i'd to do an installation of win 7- full version. if i create a partition with vista[d:\], then install win 7 there will it be a "clean" install? if i then use disk management to switch c:\[vista] and d:\[win 7] will the computer boot to win 7?

A:change partion names?

Not exactly.

The correct way would be to copy your files out of Vista externally, make your factory recovery disks so you have a path back to factory condition, gather your program installers, then boot Win7 Upgrade version DVD.

The DVD will scan your computer at boot to see Vista allowing use of Upgrade version key up front.

Now Choose Custom install, then Drive Options to Delete all partitions, create New Ones, then Format before installing Win7 to the first partition.

Read the exact steps here: Clean Install Windows 7

Here are some other tips to get a perfect install:

The installer is mostly driver-complete, with newer arriving quickly via optional Windows Updates. Any drivers then missing in Device Manager can be found on the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer or device.

Install updates and then programs slowly over time to gauge performance after each. Don't let any programs write themselves into msconfig>Startup as they become freeloaders on your RAM/CPU and can spy on you. I only allow AV and gadgets. Startup Programs - Change

Use a lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials which works perfectly with Windows 7 Firewall. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

When it is finished, clean and order the HD perfectly using state-of-the-art free CCleaner then Auslogics Disk and Registry defraggers monthly. CCleaner - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com
Auslogics Disk Defrag - Reviews and free Auslogics Disk Defrag downloads at Download.com
Auslogics Registry Defrag - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Then save a Win7 Backup image externally so you never have to reinstall again, just reimage the HD or replacement using DVD or Repair CD. Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

Hello moebetta and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I do not see any signs of viruses or malware in the log.Let's try a different scanner and see what it finds.Download WinPFind2.zip and unzip it to your Desktop. A:Help! I can't change the names of my Files!!

calm down it's a safety procedure. You need to make sure that you have the file extension at the end of the file for it to work in your program. For example

import.avi - if you change the filename to export then Windows won't know what program to open the file up because there is no extension. If you change import.avi to export.avi, then it sees the extension and renames the file.

So basically when you rename the file, make sure the .avi (or whatever the 3 letter extension is) is left when you rename the file.

How do you change the height of the explorer section under the image when in filmstrip view?
I don't want to change the size of the actual thumbnails, but the containing box.
I have a vista transformation pack running and now the row is too narrow so i have to scroll to see the file names under the thumbs!

Oh and ive tried editing:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer, DWORD ThumbnailSize
and this doesn't fix the problem. It simply changes the thumbnail size but i still have to scroll the containing window to see the image AND file name.

I have both Japanese and English Windows XP Pro on my computer and in the Japanese version am able to make the background of my desktop icon names clear, but with the English version, I have to choose a color.

I'd like to be able to get the clear background when running in English too. I know it's only an appearance thing, but it keeps the desktop looking nicer and I don't worry about changing colors to match the picture that I have on the current desktop.

Can anyone at least tell me if I can customize this myself, or find it in the J: drive (where I have the Japanese XP)? I'm searching in the Windows folder for possibilities, but really have no idea what I'm looking for...

I have, in the past, used a shortcut key or a combination of keys to change names in a list (column)to proper.Example: george to George, smith to Smith. The shortcut
will run through a cycle of 4 changes, one each time you
press the keys, as follows:
1st press changes smith to Smith
2nd press changes Smith to SMITH
3rd press changes SMITH to sMITH
4th press changes sMITH back to smith
I have used this shortcut in one of the windows 2003 office
prof. programs, Excel, Word, or Access.
I know how to use the UPPER(), LOWER() and PROPER()
functions but they don't use shortcut keys.
Can't remember how or which program I used it in.
The answer will be greatly appreciated.

A:Shortcut Key/s to change names to PROPER

If you're talking Excel, I know of no such shortcut. You could, however, create your own.

Something like this ...
Code:
Option Explicit

Sub ProperConversion()
Dim c As Range, r As Range
Dim currVal, lowerVal, upperVal
Set r = Selection
For Each c In r
If Not c.HasFormula Then
lowerVal = StrConv(c.Value, vbLowerCase)
upperVal = StrConv(c.Value, vbUpperCase)
If c.Value = lowerVal Then
c.Value = StrConv(c.Value, vbUpperCase)
ElseIf c.Value = upperVal Then
c.Value = StrConv(c.Value, vbProperCase)
Else
c.Value = StrConv(c.Value, vbLowerCase)
End If
End If
Next
End Sub
If you put this routine in a Standard Module, then from Excel hit Alt + F8, select ProperConversion from the list and hit Options, you can set a shortcut key from there. That would be the only way I know how to use a shortcut key for such an instance.

An advanced version of this can be found here: http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/proper.htm

I downloaded some programs and I dont know what some of them are because of the names, ie fdminst.exe and setupeng.exe to name a few.

I suppose I can install them to find out then uninstall if I dont wish to use them (or to save them). My main point is can I change the name to a more descriptive one, By the way i have just found out that the setupeng.exe is avast so if I change it to avast will it still work, and the same for any other program I download.
Thank you

I am doing some work for a Small Business and they have 10-15 computers (all windows xp pro) with random names, some of which are very similar. We were planning to change all of these but I am not sure how to go about doing that. All the machines are attached to a network that is a domain and the server is running windows server 2003 standard. Is there an easy way to do this without removing the computers from the server, renaming them, and reconnecting them? When I try to change the names on the system themselves I get a message asking for login information of some sort. I give it the information but it will not let me rename. Any ideas? Thanks so so much!

A:Change Computer Names On Network

I am no domain expert, but this is a general description of what you need to do.

You will have to remove each of the worksatations from the domain, log on to each workstations local account and change the name, then rejoin the workstations back into the domain.

If you have no experience in managing a Windows 2003 domain controller server, I suggest you consult someone who does. You can do more harm than good if you do not know exactly what you are doing.

I have a network of about 127 computers. I just came on board and I am fixing all of their screw ups. Besides going to each of the machines and manually changing the workgroup and computer names, is there a way to go in from my machine and change the computer name and workgroup? I looked at a couple of the machines and they are on random workgroups, etc.
The computers are as if they brought in personal desktops and the users assigned admin passwords themselves. There isnt any uniformity. I guess thats what I am trying to create to begin with.

I eventually want to put on active directory and group policy - this will be much easier then. But is there an easy way to do this in the mean time?

Thanks for any advice,

Ty

A:Best way to change 4 user account names on 2 computers

Name of the user profile and the profile folder always remains the original one. If a user was created as LarryLaffer, that will be the name of the user profile even after you change the username to JohnDoe. In other words, in the future this user would sign in to Windows with username JohnDoe and have his user data stored in profile folder C:\Users\LarryLaffer.

The simplest way to do what you want to do is to sign in to a PC with your own admin account, remove all wrongly named accounts and create new accounts named as the users want to.

I have a couple of questions about this. How can I make the change I made in Explorer show up in Media Player? Can I add information when I rip?

Thanks,

I have a external my book fat32 formated and a new mybook ntfs formated external as well. Now when I copy my files from the fat32 to the ntfs external all files copy fine but some give that destination location file characters are too long, meaning that the file names are too long. Now I could change the file names but that would conflict with programs that need that file name. I am using vista ultimate and would like to copy all the files over from the fat32 to ntfs so I can reformat the fat32 to ntfs. A:Is there a file recovery software which preserves file names and directory structure?

Hmm; Normally any backup software would do this for you.

If you had a secondary copy (say other media to which you did a copy), then this would be a snap.

It sounds as if you only have the original media and you need to recover "whatever is possible".

Hi All,

I've got a problem creating long named folders or files on a Linux network share.

I can see and log in to the share without any problems, but if I try to create a folder that is longer than 8 characters, I get the following error message:
The drive that this file or folder is stored on does not allow long file names, or names containing blanks or any of the following characters: \ / : , ; * ? < > |

Also, I can not see files on the share that have long names...

I only have this problem when I use my Windows 7 machine. XP and Ubuntu work just fine.

I am using Windows 7 Professional.

Help?

Welcome to Vista Forums!! We are here to help!!!

Are you downloading to the right drive (ex. D:\)
You might be trying to download to an older drive. When downloading something, use the files explorer and choose your desktop. Make sure that you use the extended window when choosing where to download to.....

Let us know if that helps,

Hi I am sorry if this is a very frivolous request But it is more for convenience why I am asking this as it does get somewhat annoying But when I chose quot save as quot for a notepad txt document I have been writing how using Names As'.? Document 'Save Saves Change Notepad all the time the option automatically comes up as txt I then have to type in the name of the document I wish to save it as However what I was wondering or more hoping if there are actually any tweaks or registry changes I can make so when I click 'save as' in notepad The notepad 'save as' screen automatically pops up and assigns the first line of text inside the txt file I have just typed as the possible name of the document to save This is Change how Notepad Saves Document Names using 'Save As'.? similar to how Microsoft Office uses the 'save as' option and for time saving and convenience I was hoping someone may know if there was possibly a way to set Notepad to do this automatically too Thanks Anthony

Unfortunately such a thing wouldn't be possible without a rewrite of the Notepad application itself.

Is ther any way of doing a mass update to change the way Outlook displays email addresses.

In Outlook, you can define the way NEW contacts are displayed (First Name/Last Name or Last name/First Name) through Tools/Options/Contacts/Contact Options).

The issue is that the default was set to Last Name/First Name. Now the user want to change all of his contact displays to First Name/Last Name.

So far we've change the default for NEW contacts to be First Name/Last Name... now how can I change the existing contacts with out going through each individual one and changing the display individually.

A:Batch File that grabs file names from folder to insert into batch file

A DOS "for /f" loop should do the trick, although changing the filename extension for the output to do everything in one line escapes me at the moment.

Perhaps you could do a dir .\folder\*.mp4/s/b > mp4s.txt, then make a copy of that and edit each line to rename the file to the destination name, and save it as mp3s.txt. Then you just feed both the source (mp4s.txt) and destination (mp3s.txt) filesnames into the for /f loop which handles the ffmpeg conversion.

Quite a crude solution and you'd have to handpatch the destination filenames, but i can't think of how to get a source mp4 filename and then just change the extension.

This is just reverting from your "long file name" back to the old DOS format of 8.3, max eight character name and a three character file extension. There is nothing wrong with it. I am not really sure what would cause it to switch, but it shouldn't hurt the contents. Besides the weird name, are you having any problems with the files?

Seem to remember hearing that some network software will cause this to happen. Are the files stored locally or on a network share?

The file name it wants is the name of the flv file (guess youtube downloads) , which you want to convert to mp3 .

Usually such programs have a browse button ... through which you are to navigate to the file which is sought to be converted . Browse to the location , select the flv, the filename will be automatically taken .

For some better help, provide the download link here , so that we may try the program and guide you the steps with screenshots .

We are using Word SP running on on WinXP version SP to briefly illustrate our problem Say I have four Word files called B C D and E Each file is three-to-five pages long and each file ends with a Next page section break created by dropping down the Insert menu and selecting Break gt Next page Remember that - each of the four files ends with a Section Break Next Page I create Section (Next into Break Break Page) (Continue) Section turns a fifth file called A which is a composite of files B through E inserted as links because I want to be able to update files B through E and then pull those changes into file A My new and blank file A is open and I drop down the Insert menu select File and navigate to the file called B I press the Insert button at the lower-right of the Insert File Section Break (Next Page) turns into Section Break (Continue) window and select Insert as Link I repeat this process for files C D and E Section Break (Next Page) turns into Section Break (Continue) so that when I finish file A is made up of files B through E each inserted as link When I review file A and scroll from top to bottom I notice that file D s text does not begin at the top of the page following the end of file C s text as you would expect with a Section Break Next Page inserted at the end of file C but rather the Section Break Next Page has somehow turned into a Section Break Continue during the linking process to file A and so file D s text begins on the same page and a line or two below the end of file C s text This is bad Can someone tell me how I can prevent my Section Break Next Page from Section Break (Next Page) turns into Section Break (Continue) magically and quite erroneously turning into a Section Break Continue You can make the TechPubs team at my office immensely happy with an explanation and especially with a slick solution Thank you for your valuable time Curtis nbsp

In Vista and Win7 beta, under folder options | Search | what to search, there was an option called "search file names only". It's not there in the final Win7.

Is there a global or per-drive option to only index file names, not contents?

The reason is obvious: it would be a lot faster. For many users, filename indexing only is sufficient.

A:Search file names only

Since indexing is done behind the scenes, and contents and file names are indexed, there should be no speed difference for the end user. In non-indexed locations, only file names are searched. That's why there is no longer the "search file names only" selection.

You can search by just about whatever you want, using search filters. If you want to search by name, just go to the search box and use the name: filter, like this:

name:epson

Default filters change, depending on the folder you are inside at the time. If you are in a pictures directory, the filters that pop up will be different than those if you are inside a standard files directory.

What file name are you wanting to write comments over.
There are tweak programs that allow this, if the file name is a program, or folder, but not fo individual files.

In windows Xp, you can right click the file and select "properties", then click the summary tab, and type in the comments in the comments section.

You can also do this with most programs and shortcuts.

Trying to transfer some files from my computer to my external drive and get the following error:

"The files name(s) would be too long for the destination folder. You can shorten the file name and try again, or try a location that has a shorter path."

The file names are 16-19 characters long. I try to edit the file name to something smaller and it keeps telling me it's too long, even when I cut it down to 11 (anything shorter than that and naming it at all is useless). It tells me this when trying to edit the name of the one on my computer - so I can't even shorten the names in order TO try to transfer over.

There is no practical difference in any file name. As long as the name is valid, the computer don't cares at all and software will just work. Use the one that suits you better.

The only caveat I found is with names with spaces. When refering to those, the command lines including those must be enclosed in quotes to avoid trouble, but once the quoting is in place, they work the same as anything else.
