I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Seeing that you have posted in the Hardware Sound Forum, where you will be more than likely able to get a solution to your problem, I am closing this thread.
The reason for this is, that multiple posting about the same issue tends to confuse the issue; especially when they are in two different forums.
Not many of the Windows Tech Team Members venture into the Sound Forum, and vis-a-vis with the Hardware Tech team.

I recently built a PC using a XFX nforce 790i ultra motherboard, with an onboard realtek sound card.

I have the latest audio drivers, however the onboard sound card outputs all audio through the microphone jack, with added interference. The headphone jack that the sound is supposed to come through, stays silent.

Am I going to have to resort to buying a sound card, or is there some alternative?

I'm running vista 32-bit.

A:Sound card outputs sound through the microphone jack

solved: I'd plugged the front speaker/mic into the wrong part of the motherboard. Rereading the motherboard manual showed me the correct socket.

I have a vocal microphone which i currently just use through a Line 6 amplifier, but would now like to use for recording vocals, not at a pro level, more as a hobby. i understand i cant just plug it into my PC and have it work, but if i bought something like an Asus Xonar DX sound card would that convert the input to a recognisable format to record with?

also are there any programs like Garageband for Windows?

thanks for any help!

OS: Windows 7 64
Sound Card: Sound Blaster Audigy

I was playing a game on ventrilo and got up from my seat and tripped over my headset cord.
I have a Sennheiser PC350. I didn't pull it out of the ports. So I checked and I could still hear out of everything.
But nobody could hear me. So I unplugged my headset and tried again. Microphone wasn't working.
So I tried a different headset. Brand new gaming headset out of the package. Sound worked. Microphone didn't.

Is it possible I broke my soundcard? I cant see how.
Is there anything else I can check?

A:Microphone stopped working. sound card?

Assuming you are connected directly to the sound card, yes, it could be damaged.

Enable the onboard audio chipset and test using front or rear panel ports. That will at least determine if you have a faulty sound card or headset.

I recently bought new PC and got this Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium sound card with it. Problem with it is that when I try to speak anything there is a quite loud static noise on the background.

My headset is working fine, there are no problems recording with my old PC and if I plug my headset via USB it works fine.

I'm using latest drivers from Creative. Some people suggest trying Daniel_K drivers but I'm not quite sure if this is driver related issue.

A:Sound card causing static noise on microphone

Do you have the Integrated Audio (on the motherboard) disabled in the BIOS? If its still enabled it can cause conflicts with the SoundBlaster. Whether this will cause the noise problem?? but its something to check.

Noise is a major complaint with Win 7 systems. There is no "one fix" for the problems.

If you are using the front panel headphone jack, it could be the routing of the cable to the sound card. Try the rear mic jack on the SoundBlaster card (with and without the front panel HDAudio connection to the sound card) and see if that makes any difference.

Drivers are another issue, but I don't think the Daniel K drivers address any noise problems. Video card/drivers are another area that can cause noise. Wi-Fi controllers and connections are another.

BTW, I just finished a build and tried to use a Corsair H80 cooler but the fans are too loud for my recording studio (the PC build was primarily for a new recording studio PC). I'm now using the stock Intel cooler that came with my i7 3770 CPU and have a "quiet" cooler on order.

I get no sound through the microphone to either the sound
recorder or to voice-recognition software unless I run the
hardware check in the ESS sound card properties. I don't
have to complete the hardware check- just starting it solves
the problem. All entries in the device manager are OK.

To solve the problem I've tried reinstalling the sound card
driver via the device manager but that did no good.

I dual-boot XP and this problem does not occur on the other
XP and so I conclude this cannot be a hardware problem.

Your help is MUCH appreciated.
Thanks- bye- Larry

A:microphone dead until run hardware check in ESS sound card

Have you ensured your microphone is just not muted in your audio properties?

Double click the audio icon in the systray by the time. Go to options and properties and put a check in front of microphone (usually isn't defaultly displayed) then you should see the audio properties of the microphone 1 make sure the level is not 100% down and make sure mute is not checked.

This is the sound card I bought for my laptop (Dell Inspirion E1505; about 4 years old) since its internal sound card broke. Within 1 day, the USB broke. I don't understand why the manufacturers would decide to create removable plastic coverings over the metals and wires - the top plastic can easily come off, and it's happened before but I just stick it back together. The next day, I'm unable to hear audio play through my earphones/speaker via the USB. I got it for $13 + tax at a cheap chinese tech store. (I went to a different chinese tech store too but it sold the exact same thing for a higher price)

I don't understand what went wrong for the metals and wires for the whole USB to not work anymore. can I fix this?

A:Can I fix a broken USB 3D Sound card (audio/microphone adapter)?

Buy new ones. Cost is less for replacement than the cost of fixing. Look for better qualtiy. Consider doing a gurgle search or go to TigerDirect, com,,, or any of the hundred other computer parts places... or, of course, eBay, or BestBuy

They build them cheap, so you can buy them cheaply... but better ones are commonly available.

A:Microphone / Line-in / Auxillery ports on sound card not functioning

You have to check the sound settings. Maybe its configured to pick up microphone from the front panel and not from the back. Double click on the volume icon on the system tray, there you should check if any sound is muted or not. You can also select the advanced properties, and check the settings. Maybe you will have to adjust the sound level of the microphone.

I'd say your sound card driver is not set to the correct duplex setting. Go to the "Sound" icon in the Control Panel, and see if you can set your sound card to "stereo" mix or such. Hard to say exactly what it's called because it's different for all cards and drivers. You just need to find the option for "dual" or "stereo" duplex settings.

A:Creative Sound Blaster Audigy FX Sound Card, no playback/recording

First thing, I assume you have correctly attached your speakers to the new SoundBlaster.

As you have a separate sound card, did you disable any on-board (on the motherboard) audio in the BIOS? If not, that is the first step. The on-board, is still enabled, can conflict with the SoundBlaster.

Also, temporarily disable the AMD HD audio in the Device Manager for testing (the AMD is for HDMI audio). Reboot after doing this.

Finally, although this has may not have any affect on playback, the default recording device should be the SoundBlaster "What You Hear". In the Recording sound panel, RIGHT click in an empty area and then check to show Disconnected and Disabled devices. If the SoundBlaster was installed correctly What You Hear should now show up and you can enable it and make it the default recording device.

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

First. Go into your bios, and disable your onboard sound, and save and exit bios.

Once your computer has booted up, go into contol panel, and double click the sounds and audio devices icon.

Click on the audio tab, and set the sound playback device to your new soundcard.

Do the same for the sound recording device. Click on the voice tab and do the same. Click apply/ok.

Make sure you have the correct drivers installed for your new soundcard, and that your speakers are plugged into the new soundcard.

I'm looking to buy the Creative Lab Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum eX sound card, but I'm not sure how compatible it is with my current system, which is an HP Pavilion 7960. It says you need an available adjacent slot to the PCI card for the Audigy extension, which I don't know what it means.

I can't find any detailed information. In any case, I don't know why you would want separate speaker outputs on the front panel. Most of the bay panels I've seen have standard features like mic in, headphone out, and misc other connections like USB, Firewire, etc.. I've not seen any with individual (ie: left speaker, right speaker, center speaker) connections, and it would clutter your front panel having all of the those cables hanging.

I've tried to install and reinstall drivers from here, tried to rollback driver to older version but I always have the same result: installed the IDT sound codec, and after a restart, the mute button  turned red and I cannot switch it. Soundcard device ID: HDAUDIO\FUNK_01&VEN_111&DEV_7605OS: Windows 7 Professional x86 How can I fix it?

Hi,Same problem here. After repair of the display cable (Probook is just 2 years old!) by service centre a white cross-red dotthrough the speaker-icon appears. Service centre cannot fix it.HP helpdesk chat reports soundcard is defect. Soundcard is part of motherboard is said so motherboard needs to be exchanged.Second opinion learns that soundcard is NOT a part of the motherboard.I've bought a replacement Probook with a working, checked it!, motherboard and soundcard.New motherboard and soundcard have been placed incl. different Windows 7 but still (again) no sound. Can anybody give a solution ?

It isn't always comes and goes, but it's pretty ugly. I thought it might be a sample rate thing, but I changed those settings in control panel.

Anyone use that card with vista successfully?

A:distorted sound in vista/createiv x-fi titanium sound card

I had a Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic in my rig and I constantly had distorted audio - manifesting in the form of 'crackly', echoing sounds. Really frustrating, I tried all kinds of solutions including a clean uninstall of the audio drivers, replugging the sound card in a different PCI slot, etc. For a while everything would be fine, and then back into crunchy-sound-land...

My rig used to have Windows XP Pro as the OS, and the sound card worked perfectly. It was only after I changed the OS to Vista that the woes began.

This is probably not the solution you want to hear, but after 2 years of despair I flogged the card on eBay and bought myself an Auzen X-Fi Prelude 7.1 card. Although that is still an X-Fi it works beautifully in Vista, absolutely no problem with the sound since.

although the xonar panel will control almost all functions for that, make sure that windows has it's default audio device set to the spdif card you want. If it's set to speakers HD AUDIO (hd audio being one of the cards you want) will only output through analog. Control Panel>hardware and sound>sound. Select the card that you want and make sure u select one of the options that also says spdif. Click set default, apply and it should work. Sorry if you have already tried this. But it's the first thing that comes to mind right now.

I'm working on husband's pc, it is an HP Media Ctr. set up. Pavilion 4100e. We had to do a System Restore when pc was over run with virus/trojan infections. SR resulted in some lost Driver/Controller files, including ethernet and sound card. I have recovered all Driver/Controller files-- and everything is working except for sound.

I have uninstalled Creative Audigy Audio Processor (through Device Manager) and reinstalled (through Found New Hardware). I have run dxdiag, only to find "device cannot start" under problem devices/sound card.

Any suggestions on how to get this to work again? I cannot use System Restore to go back to when it was working, because that would take me back to all the virus/trojan infections and nothing was working.

Any help would be appreciated~

The problem might just be the new board, it may not support the sound card, or maybe it really isn't plugged in all the way.

Happened to me with my Firewire card took me forever to put the dump thing in I keep pushin and pushin, but not to hard because you'll break the card and you don't want to do that.

so just keep pushin slowly it may look like it is in but it probably really isn't

I hope creative can help you with your problem.

Or ot may be the new processor/ board combination, why didn't you just get the Atholon 64 instead of the Septeron 64.

I don't think many cards are compatible with that

I have put the sound card into my computer and made sure that I've hooked up everything correctly, but I have ran into a problem with it. When I ran the download "Product Identification Module Update" from the Creative website, it's telling me that I don't have the right OS, and tells me to update to Windows 7 or later versions. Well, my problem is that I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, which I know is plenty new, and I don't understand why it's not letting me download the update/driver for the sound card. Occasionally when loading up my notebook I am not able to listen to sound from videos, menu sounds etc. This happens about 1/50 boot-ups. My old computer was much the same. This is bearable, but I have recently started using Ventrilo, the voice chat software, and randomly when using it I lose my sound (that is, all computer sounds). That it has this widespread effect is why I believe it to be the fault of the sound card, instead of the Vent software.

I have reinstalled and attempted to update the drivers to the sound card (see my spec list for the make).

Has anyone encountered this problem, and has it been a hardware or software problem? More importantly, how can I fix it?

No need for help. I connected an old set of speakers to my audio card and it works fine; therefore, it only leads me to conclude that the speakers on the moniter itself are defective. I got a new sound card today. Installed it, installed the drivers from the CD, plugged in the headphones and it works. But the sound levels are way to low. I raised the volume in all the places I could find, but it's still a bit low.

Here's the card: Creative Sound Blaster 5.1 VX Sound Card - Quality 5.1 surround audio

Here are my headphones: Philips - Stereo Headphones Deep bass - SHP2000/97 - Indoor - Headphones - Accessories

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

A:Low volume with new sound card(Creative Sound Blast 5.1 VX)

1. Since you are using a separate sound card and not the on the motherboard audio, disable that in the BIOS. If its enabled it can conflict and cause problems.

Are you plugging into the Speaker jack on the card or do you have it connected to the front panel in the case. If you are connecting to the front panel headphone jack, plug the headphone into the Speaker jack on the card and see if there is any difference.

Try the headphones in a different computer to check the volume level. If its low on another computer then the headphones are the problem.

Let's start by right clicking the speaker icon in your system tray and select playback devices from the options...right clik on the speakers and set as default. You can select to disable the independent headphone jacks if the speakers are plugged to the sound card. Then clik on properties and go to the levels tab at top. Set the slider to 100%. Go back to the playback devices window and select Configure button. Test the individual speakers by clicking on them one at a time.

What I am looking for right now is a 2.1 sound system that can be directly plugged in to my Asus Xonar D2X sound card. The system should have a really decent subwoofer with tight and deep bass. As for the speakers, they should be able to produce crisp sound at high volume.

It sounds as though the driver for the sound card doesnt work on windows 7. Also I think that the driver for the motherboard audio will most likely not work either. It is hard to find drivers for windows 7 because hardly any one is using it yet. Have a look for your sound card drivers and see if they are ok to be used on windows 7.

If only a few months old it may have a defect. Normally parts should last for years and not change in a few months.Still, to eliminate a possible software issue, use the system restore to go back to a earlier time. Try two days back, then four days and so on until you find the critical point where something was changed.IMO you must report this to Dell as soon as possible.,152257.0.html

A:How can I get sound output from sound card when streaming video?

Hello green,

You get sound from your microphone? I don't think I am understanding. Sound should come from your sound card. You plug the speakers into the back of the computer and into the sound card (green jack). The mic receives sound. My mic is USB so it doesn't use any jack other than the USB port, but if you use the sound card, it goes into the purple jack

Do you have the audio driver installed? This should be right:

We have been having a problem with a SOund card we recently installed... The sound is warped when we use it in conjuntion with Windows Media Encoder. I wonder if it could be the mother board or the sound card which is an Echo Mia Midi card.

Any input is appreciated.

The title says it all. I recently started playing Medal of Honor and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and on both games I get a frozen screen with looping audio which forces me to shut the computer down via the power button.

after doing some searching around on the net and trying various solutions, I have determined the next step is to disable on board sound. I know this sounds like a noobish question but, is there any way to get sound out of my computer? is there a BIOS setting that allows me to disable the on board sound but still get sound out my PC? these 2 games rely heavily on being able to hear what is going on,

I have an ABIT IP35 Pro with no secondary sound card.

A:Can I get audio if I turn onboard sound off without a sound card?

No that'd be impossible. if you turn off the onboard sound, how are you gonna get some sound delivered to your speaker or headphone?

you should try disabling the onboard sound and check if it fixes the issue. if it did, also try to uninstall your current audio driver and install the newest one.

looping audio does not always means the onboard sound is faulty. it usually goes on loop because that portion of the soundtrack is already loaded into RAM. therefore it still plays even when the computer froze.

the problem might lies in other thing such as video card or overheating CPU since you indicate it only occurs when you're playing games.

Been using a Creative X-Fi Sound Blaster Extreme Music sound card for about a few months.
Then I bought evga's 780i motherboard.
I decided to remove the sound card, and use the onboard SPDIF to my Pioneer 7.1 receiver via optical digital cable and I'm amazed.

So...what would you use and why?

Hey Grimreaper!

Sounds like you have a killer setup for sound. (I won't say what I'm using ).

If it were me and the onboard sound system is working great, then I'd stay with the onboard system. If you change your mind in the future, you can always add the external back in.

Best of luck with your new mobo

First, let me say that I am a sound novice! I recently started a vinyl ripping project. My onboard sound does not support 24 bit depth recording at 96 kHz sampling rate, so I purchased an external USB card with phono preamp. It works just fine for my project. But as long as external sound card is plugged into a USB port, it takes control of all sound. I'd like to be able to toggle back to my onboard audio when I'm not ripping vinyl so I can listen through my system speakers. I have experimented with Windows audio controls, but have not found a way to do this. Is it possible?

My first post so please be patient with me. My PC is a Dell Dimension 8200, (vintage 2002) Pentium 4, 512 cache, 2GB memory, 120GB HD.

I upgraded my OS from Win XP Pro to Win 7 Ultimate in Nov 2010 and my soundcard completely stopped working as being incompatible with Win 7. There are no updating drivers as it is old technology according to the manufacturer (Voyetra Turtle Beach Santa Cruz DSP). Went downtown and bought a replacement and when I tried to install it I found that the connectors didn?t match. The salesman said that Dell uses proprietary connectors therefore I must use a Dell card. Dell doesn?t have any for my outdated system.

So my question is: Will a USB soundcard, (such as the Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro or equal) actually solve my problem, i.e., do everything a regular soundcard does? It just sounds too good to be true!

Many thanks for any assistance you can provide.

yes of course, all you have to do is disable the mobo sc from the BIOS and install the new one. if you have any software that was installed for the mobo sc just uninstall it and make sure u remove it from the device manager.

I've bought one and plugged it in, installed and updated everything, and it sounds identical to my Realtek HD audio, which I hear sounds pretty terrible compared to the Creative card.

The only way to get it to sound different is through the effects, which I don't like and will never use, (aside from the EQ.)

Did I do something wrong?

Used onboard sound until today where I remounted my Auzentech X-Fi Forte. I have uninstalled the realtek sounddrivers and deactivated the onboard sound in BIOS.
Everything is playing with the default analog speakers (5.1 setup) through the Forte, except systemsound (logon sound, program error, USB connected/disconnected aso). When open controlpanel -> Sound -> change system sounds I can NOT test the selection. They play allright, I think, but not via the Forte soundcard, so no sound i put out. I would do the following. download the latest driver from your motherboard manufacturer. Go to device manager and uninstall the device driver, then uninstall the device. restart the computer. Ignore the new hardware found wizard(cancel out). run the driver program. Check to see that the device is now present in device manager. check your sound. If nothing is coming out check your sound properites in the control panel to be sure your device is selected as the playback device, the volumes are up and there are no mute buttons checked.

edit: if none of that works you may need to add in a sound card to an expansion slot.

It would depend on what you want from the audio or what applications you have for it. I have a home built using an Intel motherboard that has IDT (SigmaTel) HD audio on it. It's fine for most of the "listening" that I do However, I have a music program that uses MIDI and the default built in Windows/Microsoft GS Wavetable MIDI Synth is pretty bad. For that reason I have a SoundBlaster Xfi installed and SoundBlaster has on board hardware MIDI synths that are much better.

Can I go into the BIOS screen and re-enable onboard audio (providing it allows me to) and will the Realtek HD Audio once again appear in recording devices along with the "what you hear" option the Soundblaster sets up when installing the soundcard ?  Basically, can you have both Realtek and Soundblaster show in recording devices at the same time and have the option to disable one when your not using it ?

When you reformatted and reinstalled Windows, you lost many of the drivers you formerly had installed. Now you have to reinstall any drivers that are missing. Check the Device Manager and if you see any yellow symbols next to any device listed, those need drivers installed.

For your onboard sound, for example, you should find the sound driver on the motherboard driver CD that should have or might have come with it. If you don't have this CD, you should be able to download the onboard sound driver from the motherboard manufacturer's website. In your case, I think the manufacturer is ECS Elitegroup.

In your bios it is under "Integrated Peripherals" and called "Azalia Codec".

A:Sound problem perrsists even after new sound card

Not all sound is at the same volume level. One MP3, for example, can be louder or softer than another. Same way with wav audio files, audio from the internet, audio on DVD's, etc. System sounds can be at different levels from different programs, and same way with streaming audio from the internet.

I have Audio CD's, both commercial and burned that have different volume levels between songs.

I have a home recording studio and when I mixdown songs, I do it to a preset level. I then run them through an audio editior and set them all to the same reference level. Then when I burn an audio CD all the songs are at the same (or nearly) same volume level.

BTW, when you installed the separate sound card, did you disable the on-board audio in the BIOS? If not, there can be conflicts and varying problems.

Hello, TechSupport faithful,

I'm currently having an issue with my laptop(HP dv5-1235dx) where I cannot get the sound to come through my TV when I have a HDMI cord hooked up. I read through some other posts on the web and they didn't help me because they all gave the same solution, that seemed to work for other people "go to your playback devices and make 'hdmi' your default device". For me, I don't have that option in my list of devices, my only choices are:speakers and dual headphones, independent dual headphones, SPDIF (Digitial output via HP dock).

Thanks for reading, and if you are able to give me a solution I would appreciate it. Also, sorry if this is in the wrong branch of the forum, I just clicked the first feasible branch, i'm about to go .
