Change Local Net 2 to Local Net

Q: Change Local Net 2 to Local Net

I once ran across a simple UI item that allowed me to change LOCAL CONNECTION 2 to LOCAL CONNECTION.

RESOLVED. Open Network and Sharing Center. Click on the icon for the active connection. Change THAT name.

Preferred Solution: Change Local Net 2 to Local Net

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I once ran across a simple UI item that allowed me to change LOCAL CONNECTION 2 to LOCAL CONNECTION.

It wasn't in the registry, and I am not referring to changing the name of the local connection itself. Just want to drop the "2" designation.

Anyone happen to recall where this is done? Frustrating to forget something that was easily accomplished in the past. ^_^ Thanks.

I have done everything I can find on the internet and here to try and get a local administrator or even just administrator privileges on my computer. EVERYTHING I've tried asks me for administrator password and I've entered everything I can think of. Or it asks me to click "yes" to continue but there is never a yes listed. I'm at my wits end. Someone please help. I even tried to reset my computer and it still wants an administrators password.

Hello everyone, I recently run into trouble while installing Windows 7 pro 64 bits in another SSD. Long story short, I change the setups of the old windows I had and now it does not boot from the old one, which I want to revert. I'm a 100% sure that all the files are present and nothing was moved or touched (I just checked it) in the different hard drives I've got , but it's just that now I've got windows in two separte SSD's. My question is, how do I change the Local Disk (C:) for it to be the one I had the original windows, so as to have my OS like before.
No need to say that if the OS i running properly there's no need for it to be better, a lesson I learned the hard way.
Thanks for the help in advance.

I bought my PC build with an SSD, which I plan to use for programs and the such, and a HDD, which I want to use to store smaller files, like images and documents. But during the installation of Windows 8, I chose the SSD to install Windows.
Is there a way I can change local disk to be the HDD, and not the SSD?

A:How to change local disk to my HDD instead of my SSD?

Keep OS, programs, Hibernate and paging files on SSD to benefit from its speed.

It's best to install the OS on the SSD with the HDD unplugged. First have all of your files sorted into their User folders, dragged to HDD, then after install either link to the OS User Folders - Change Default Location or rightclick each User folder on data drive to link to its related Library - Include a Folder and then make that folder the default for that Library - Set Save Folder.

I find that the best way is to change the location of the User folder to data drive. But if you use Win7 backup imaging you'll need to choose the Library method since otherwise it will want to include the data HDD in the image since you've moved System files to there.

Here also is a modern free method to http://www.sevenforums.com/backup-re...ml#post2269172 which demonstrates how to do this from a data drive.

So I had the BSOD on my Windows 7 computer and I did a fresh install onto another drive because I had no way of saving or backing up my files from my Local C: drive as everytime I would boot up my computer it would give me the BSOD, even in safe mode. So I installed Windows 7 onto another drive and now my computer is running and I still have all of my files from my Local C: drive but it is now labeled HP (D:). The C: drive I currently am using only has 3GB free, while the HP(D:) drive has around 200GB. Anyway to change the drives so that I can go back to using my old C: Drive? Thanks.

What exactly do you want to do???

Hamachi will be the default route for any IPs in the 5.x.x.x range. You need to be in the same network as the Hamachi IP you want to telnet to, though. That is, you have no access to my Hamachi IPs through telnet or other means.

Hi,

I have a PC and laptop connected to the internet through the Linksys WRT546. In playing on line games wthin my household, the site we frequest wll not allow us to play against one another because we are on the same 'local network'. Is there a way to hide or disguise this, so we can play against one another?

I have tried proxy sites but cannnot find one compatiable with the site.

A:How can I change PC and laptap from being recognized on same local network?

One thought. Pay for a second IP address. Hard code the 2 IP addresses to your workstations and share the internet through a standard switch. It won't let you play becuase it sees 2 Pc's sharing the same IP address I would guess. Assuming it worked before when you used Dialup and DSL.

Hello to everyone,I`m not sure if my question is for that section of the forum, but wanna ask how to forbid change of local time in a maschines under windows xp and windows 7, so users can`t configure itself and roll back time. Is it possible with local NTP server? I will appreciate all your proposals for a solution. Thank you in advance.

A:Preventing change of local time in windows xp

I think you are trying to stop day light time change, if I am correct find a place that does not adhere to it.  Use it as your place of origin, then set the local time.

Now if I did not get it correct and your machine is losing time simply install a new CMOS battery.

I have one HDD in my laptop and after it went threw some other problems, it was returned from the shop with local disc as H:, deciding this would be far too inconvenient to go on with, I mistakenly decided to take it upon myself to solve the problem. I followed the MS instructions using regedit to redesignate the drive, and after attempting to restart my computer wouldn't boot past the load screen. I tried to use safe mode, which failed, and recovery console, but it listed four "unknown" (IIRC) or nonexistant drives and gave a BSOD for a split second before it restarted. I now realize I should have left it alone, or sought better help first, but thats in the past. Any help for a remorseful DIYer?

Hi All

I have a physical Windows system, on which I run VMware Workstation 9. Now on VMware I run Ubuntu 12.10 an LAMP for a webserver.

Problem:

Now my local IP address for my virtual NIC (the one Ubuntu is using) has an address of 192.168.159.7, and my home router only issues IP addresses of the range 10.0.0.x. So if I want to port forward to the virtual NIC, which has a 192.168 address, I cannot, so my LAMP webserver cannot be accessed externally since the router does not know to send the packets on port 80 to the virtual NIC... How do I fix that?
The only way I guess is to assign a 10.0.0.x ip address to the virtual NIC??
But how do I do that?

I tried to do it on the host Windows machine with 'Get my IP address automatically' but it issues a 192.168 address every time...

Thank you

The Local Security Policy Editor will only be available in the Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, and Enterpise editions. You will not have the Local Security Policy Editor available in the Windows 7 Starter and Home Premium editions.

Unfortunately you don't have this option using Windows 7 starter. I did have this picture handy though. We even have a tutorial that shows you how to edit it.

A:Can I change local security policy entries from RegEdit?

Hi again,

So I've found that default software policy rules should look like this:

%HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRoot%,Path,Unrestricted,
%HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ProgramFilesDir%,Path,Unrestricted

and might be located in the registry here?

Software restriction policies are stored in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Safer or in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows.

Is anyone able to confirm what a default / working set of registry values should be set to please?

Thanks again,
Chris

A:How to disable local administrator password change group policy

I'm not sure what you mean. Simply logging onto your PC shouldn't change the admin password. It is also recommended to not use the Admin account for general use.

We have a win 7 PC that has the password set to expire every 42 days (be design set in gpedit.msc). The user logs in and is presented with the "you must change password" screen. They enter a password and get this.  "configuration
information could not be read from the domain controller, either because the machine is unavailable, or because access is denied"
It is a WORKGROUP pc not a member of a domain but unsure if it every was. I changed the password using the administrator account and set the password that way without issue but the user stated that this was not the first time they had this issue.
I deleted the GPO settings (https://www.404techsupport.com/2014/04/script-clear-cached-group-policies/) and changed it to WORKGROUP1 in an attempt to reinforce the
non-domain status and no change. User is not restricted from changing their own password. User is not the admin.

A:Assign Local Admin Rights without local Admin Group

You should be able to right-click on the exe file, then choose properties. On the "Compatibility" tab, there should be a checkbox for "Run as administrator", which you can check (enable) and save settings.

Hello I found this forum out of necessity I have done a folder folder Sync pc local local office on w/ Surface Pro??? on fair share of googling this question without any luck resolution Hopefully someone here will have a useful answer I use a program at my office that stores data Sync local folder on office pc w/ local folder on Surface Pro??? in the Sync local folder on office pc w/ local folder on Surface Pro??? local program folder on my pc However i also use this program on my tablet surface pro these are both windows devices respectively so i'm hoping that works to my advantage Most of the resolutions i found on google involved using my OneDrive however the Local folder is approx GB depending on the number of projects so this is not an option I would rather find a solution that does not involve an external HDD at this is just one more piece of equipment to carry and i worry about performance issues while working on the projects In my opinion the ideal solution is Use the program while i am at the office the files save to the Local folder on my PC and then when my tablet is awake the modified files automatically sync over our wifi connection The wifi aspect isnt a deal breaker i am fine with syncing via a USB cord as well The main goal is i want the projects data from the Local folder to sync with either my PC or my tablet depending on which file has the most recent time stamp So obviously if i work on a project during the week and need to view modify it outside the office any changes made will sync to the PC the next time I connect via the wifi or USB I am also open to alternative solutions that i may be missing Cross posted to Windows Forum as well

A:Sync local folder on office pc w/ local folder on Surface Pro???

I would agree that having a cloud storage would be nice should the office server go down. You do know that you don't have to sync the entire share folder and programs right? You can sync just individual files that are actually being used and changed. As far as extra storage goes, no need to tote around an external HD. Why not get a couple USB 3.0 flash drives or sdcards? And I really do mean get 2-3, just in case one should fail you have some kind of a backup. You can never rely on a single backup.

A:internet 'access' keeps changing from 'local and internet' to 'local only'

This happens when the router/dsl/cable modem loses its connection with the internet but your wireless connection between your computer and the wireless router stays up (local only).
The next time this happens run in and take a look at the WAN light on your dsl modem to verify that it is red or flashing orange (depending on your modem). Most likely the connection has dropped but the modem will restore the connection automatically when the line is good again. This is an ISP issue and you should call them when you are having trouble and ask them to diagnose the line. You will have to insist because it takes more than 2 microseconds of their time and you know how valuable they believe their time can be.

Now in my Local Disk Drive (C there is a folder in it called "Local Disk". This folder contains all the computer files, user files, and program files. In the root directory of the Main C Drive, the tw program files folders appear, with the Windows folder also. There is also a folder that says Windows.old, Windows.old.ooo. What do i do?

I would reinstall delete the old partition and create a new 1 unless you are wanting to save any of your old files. The windows.old are your old files. You have two operating systems on the same partition, I believe.

A:What to do with old XP PC-local net maybe

XP and win7 computer are connected both wired to same router? If so... it doesn't use the router part at all. It uses the switch that's built inside the router.

Speed should be 100mb (or 1Gb if using gigbit port). Divide by 8 and you have Bytes instead of bits. About 30% of communication is overhead btw.

Why use tightvnc or any other vnc flavor? That works great for remote control. But you don't need it for windows file sharing.

Hey guys, I believe I have found that "Local only" internet access fix. I have been searching the forums for months now and nothing seemed to work. Microsoft was no help at all. Even seemed to act like they didnt know it was happening. Anyway I stumbled across it on accident just trying to fix the problem muself. Go to the network and sharing center. Click on view status. Then go to wireless properties. then click on security. Now if it says it is set to WPA-2 personal, change it to WPA personal. Then you will have to re enter your password. Boom fixed. Good luck. It worked for me

Hello,

Recently, Id say about a couple of days now I keep getting LOCAL ONLY when I'm on the internet.. and it just randomly just comes and goes.

It's annoying and frustrating at times when I'm trying to use the internet.

Does anyone have any clue as to why??
Any updates I can do and such...??

My Router is Netgear
My network adapter is Atheros Ar5007
My internet is CLEAR

IDK if any of that info could help..

I have unplugged the cables on the back of router and modem and plugged back and internet will come back but it could be a coincidence since I'm noticing that it randomly comes and goes. The router is in the other room, I am connected to it wirelessly.

I appreciate your knowledge in advance. Thank you.

Hello monirlz, and welcome to Vista Forums!

The Internet Protocol: IPv6 sometimes causes issues like this. You can disable IPv6 and just use IPv4. Here is a link to one way to disable IPv6: How to disable certain Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) components in Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008

Evening all

Bit of a problem with the new router...! Have just installed Virgin Media through cable modem and Netgear WGR614 to my Dell Inspiron 1720 wirelessly. At the mo, I am connected through it, but when I close the lid (hibernate) and then open up again, the router will only connect to a local only network. The only way I can fix this is by connecting to the router via a LAN wired connection, and rebooting the laptop, then I have the wireless back on again. As you can imagine, this is not ideal at all!

First of all, does this make sense? If so, any ideas on how to sort it?

Ta very much!

Hello. this is my first post and i have been trying to find a solution to my problem. My problem is I am trying to connect to a wireless network. It connects but it starts off with it saying limited connectity and then it goeds to Access: Local only. Then I researched and i clicked on the IPv6 box and t worked. This time it doesnt work. I dont think I need to install any drivers or updates bc my PC is a couple of months old. Its a toshiba Satellite A215-S4757. 64bit.

A:Local Only

If you haven't done so - do a complete hardware reset on your router. This fixed my "Local Only" issues (had to do so again when major security updates were installed). I'm no network engineer, but it seems that something in the router code makes Vista a bit unsure about the safety and limits the connection to local.

Good luck!

Since yesterday, and for no apparent reason at all, my computer keeps losing internet connection (but local still stays). Every 10 or so minutes the computer disconnects from the internet and when I put my mouse over the network icon in the task bar, it says Local Only. Not only that, but even when I do have full connectivity, the internet is extremely slow, and I can't seem to maintain a stable connection. I'm using cable internet, I have a router, and I'm running windows vista. I'm pretty sure its not the router because I connected the modem directly to the computer, and it got even worse. I've tried disabling it and restarting my modem and router many times with no luck. My ISP says my connection is strong, and yet the internet is acting so poorly. This just started happening yesterday morning, and I'm completely stumped. Can anyone lend a hand?

Okay, I give up! I've seen several similar posts to my issue and I've tried just about everything suggested to no avail.

I have Vista Home Premium (32-bit). I've had the same laptop/modem/DSL for over a year and everything worked fine, then about a week ago I started getting the local-access-only message and can no longer connect to the internet.

What I've tried:
1) Taking my laptop to another wireless location - same error.
2) Trying an XP laptop on my home wireless - works just fine.
3) Rebooting in Safe Mode - still doesn't work.
4) Deleting the Network adapter drivers and letting windows reinstall - still doesn't work.
5) Going back to the latest windows update and uninstalling it - still doesn't work.
6) Disabling TCP/IPv6

Any other suggestions? I'm out of ideas and quickly losing my patience!

yes, we respect your opinions on vista, unfortunaely we can only help you if your optimistic about fixing the issue, please keep vista bashing to a minimum (you are in VISTA forums).
Now thats cleared up, can you right click the connection icon and go to network and sharing center, and then click on the red x over the network map at the top, it should be where the blue arrow is pointing on the image below.

I have a Computer which operates on XP Service Pack 2 and has a Maxtor 1TB external Hard Drive hooked up. We do a lot of Video Editing (programs such as DV Storm, Vegas etc.) and up until yesterday the external came up as Local Disk E, but it became unplugged whilst the Editing programs were running.

It now it comes up as Local Disk (I) but the problem is the Edit programs doesn't recognise any of the files (avi., mpg etc.) that are on the drive (comes up as 'invalid path'), and nor does it show them in their previous format.

Could someone please help and explain how I could restore it to Local Disk E so I can access the files again?

Many thanks
Mark

A:Solved: Keep getting Local only

Are you using wireless or cable - if wireless try removing all the profiles - see below
would you post the following please ipconfig /all here - see below
also the xirrus screen shot - see below
have you tried safe mode with networking - tap F8 as it boots - and choose "safemode with networking" from menu
------------------------------------------------------------------------
{ipconfig /all}
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here
We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results here
-> Start
-> (XP - enter the following in the RUN box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all
-> (Vista or Windows 7 - enter the following in the Search box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all

A black box will appear on the screen -
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy

then reply here and
control key + V to paste
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wireless Profiles

- Vista/Windows7:
http://www.tp-link.com/support/showfaq.asp?id=214
- delete the wireless profiles
Start> control Panel> classic view> network and sharing center> manage wireless networks

Delete the profiles
you will then have to enter the wireless security key for any networks you connect to
--

Wireless Profiles
http://mgmcc.forumotion.net/networking-tutorials-f17/removing-an-existing-wireless-profile-t109.htm
- XP
http://www.tp-link.com/support/showfaq.asp?id=186
- delete the preferred networks
start> control panel> network connections> right click on the wireless connection> listed wireless networks tab in the preferred network list click on each one and - remove button

you will then have to enter the wireless security key for any networks you connect to
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Google public DNS
http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
{run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector} Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php
Then run the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Can linux be installed to a HDD on one pc then the drive located to another as mastr?

Ok i'm here hoping to gain some advice and maybe a couple of pointers. I've just installed a 40GB HDD next to my 160GB existing one, thing is I also want to install linux.

Do you think i should put both windows and linux onto the 40gb hdd in order to dedicate the other to file storage? If so should i partition it for each OS (not sure if required as is). Any links to resources related to the matter would be appreciated.

As stated in the title, just another thought as the cd-rom in the original pc isn't working, am considering use as a server or something along those lines using linux.

Thanks for any consideration.

A:Two local HDD one dedicated to OSs' or one each? (in brief)

Yes, you can move Linux installations between computers. If the CPU architecture is slightly different (say, a HT P4 and a measly Duron), then you'd have to replace the kernel. Can't move between 64-bit and 32-bit of course. If the hard drive location changes (from slave to master), then you have to fix the bootloader.

You can install Linux no problem even without a CD-ROM. Just boot using a floppy and load the installation files from a hard drive, over the LAN or even across the internet.

In the same computer..

Since you won't be running the OS in parallel, then speed wise it would make sense to have both OS on the 40GB.

You don't have to partition the second drive with dedicated partitionss for Linux and Windows. You have a choice between several filesystems readable by both OS:
- Both Linux and Windows can handle the FAT32 filesystem just fine. You may run into problems with very long pathnames and data integrity in case of crashes though.
- If you install Captive-NTFS, then Linux can write to NTFS no problem. Depending on your distro, it may take some effort to make this work
- You can install a special driver in Windows that lets it use Ext2 and Ext3 filesystems.

Welcome to TSG:
Need some more info. Please answer as many of the questions as you can:
The “Johnwill” need to know about your environment questionnaire:

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

What country are you located in.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection?
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make and model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms? Have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way? Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?

If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands:

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Hi,

I have just upgraded to Windows 7 from XP.

Everything is working OK but My hard drive letter is now H not C

Why has this happened?

Is it an issue?

I'm concerned that it will mess up my iTunes library and generally confuse things.

A:Local drive is H not C?

This can sometimes happen when doing an upgrade type install from inside an existing OS.
The only sure way to prevent this is to install fresh from external media

The best way to deal with a dual boot is to keep all your data on a separate data partition which can then be assigned the same drive letter from within both OS's.

You can then store things such a the iTunes library and your documents on the data partition - a secondary benefit of this policy is that if you lose an OS you are less likely to lose or corrupt the data

If this is a single OS situation then it should not cause any issues for correctly written software and their installers - however a program that assumes a system drive is the C: drive may have issues

I'm running Vista on an Acer 4630Z laptop. My wireless connection changes frequently during the day from "Access: Local and Internet," to "Access: Local Only." It does not appear to have any affect on my wifi reception or my access to the internet, though sometimes it seems it may be a little bit slower in "local only." I can disconnect then reconnect and will quickly get Local and Internet again.
This happens several times a day.
What would be causing this? I've read other threads about people having Local Access only and not being able access the internet but that is not my problem. I can still access the internet even though it says "local only."
But I'd like to fix this so that it will stay on "Local and Internet."
Thanks!

Make and model of router ?
First things that are easy to do and do fix many router problems.
Download and install any current router firmware.
Do a router reset.Hold the reset button down for at least 15 seconds.

A:Red X on Local Disk - Help please

Hi Welcome to TSG!!
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix and remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

Open the c:\SDFix folder and double click RunThis.cmd to start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.
It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

I've changed C (which is a removeable drive) to X so C is avaliable, but i am unable to rename the Local Disc to C, i think because it's in use, how can i get round this?

I cannot install a driver as it by default goes to C:\.
Any ideas?

since then, my sons desktop windows vista will not connect to the internet and has local only connection via a Belkin adapter. The adapter has found the router but will not connect.

A friend has tried to change the IP address, and still nothing.

We have tried to uninstall Norton security, but the machine seems to want to hold onto it, and will not fully uninstall.

I have another desktop, which is plugged into the router and that works fine. My laptop which is also Windows Vista, has connected perfectly well.

I am seriously pulling my hair out as what to do next.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with Windows Vista
I'm trying to connect to some unsecure wireless networks at a friend's house for the first time and am only able to connect with local access.
I try diagnose and repair and it says that there are no issues. Three other computers are connecting to the internet just fine.
They signal is good, and there is supposedly data being sent and received but no programs will connect to the internet.
This issue has never happened before. I regularly run a registry cleaner and tried restoring to a backup from a couple days ago and that didn't help.

I would like to start using a VPN service for better privacy while online However I have read that using a VPN client will block the local area network is this true I use local and VPN network a HTPC with a large RAID array to share media with my other devices and I want to still be able to access my local files via network drives while using VPN to browse the web Is this possible My current setup is the HTPC file server xbox and a workstation PC connected via ethernet to a dd-wrt router The VPN and local network dd-wrt router connects via WiFi to a VPN and local network primary router plugged into the modem The primary router also supplies WiFi to some phones I have WiFi adapters for the computers if that helps but I uninstalled them when I couldn t figure out how to get Windows to separate local file sharing over the faster ethernet and internet over WiFi I m pretty inexperienced at networking but am willing to try anything to make this work Thanks in advance for your help nbsp

A:VPN and local network

You'll have to do something called "split-tunneling" to access both the internet and LAN.
I don't know what operating system you have, and the steps to do this are different depending on the OS, so here are a few links to help you figure it out (I honestly have next to no experience in this area):
