Hardrive Full: Help Trying to find un-needed files to free up space

Q: Hardrive Full: Help Trying to find un-needed files to free up space

I want to search my hardrive manually for non needed files. Files from spam, web, cookies, ect.. I know from installing and uninstalling programs and surfing the web the computer gathers non needed files. I do not run outlook on this machine so I am not downloading email. And all my digital pictures are on a seperate drive. I have a 60GB hardrive with WIN XP SP3 and 24 gb music on it. With WIN XP using 5 GB this = 29GB used with estimated 31GB free. I have a funny feeling there is just a bunch of files eating up space. I wanted to give this a try before re-installing windows completly for education purposes.
I want to start a C:\
What directories/folders hold non needed files?
What file extentions can I search for?

Any threads with more information?
All suggestions and directions welcome.

Preferred Solution: Hardrive Full: Help Trying to find un-needed files to free up space

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello rentonhighlands

1. Try disabling Hibernation and you will gain disk space equal to the amount of RAM on your system.
Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance / Power Options / Hibernate tab, and uncheck the Enable hibernation box

If it is enabled you will see that XP has reserved disk space equal to your RAM for hibernation

You can re-enable hibernation easily by checking the box again as XP recreates the hiberfil.sys file.

?Hiberfil.sys? is the size of your RAM since XP dumps the whole memory to this file before putting the system into hibernation

2. Reduce space used by System Restore
To adjust the amount of space System Restore uses on a disk, go to the Control Panel ('Start > Control Panel') and double click the 'System' icon. Then click on the 'System Restore' tab on the system applet. Depending on your disk setup use the following instructions:

? If you have just a single partition on your system: You can adjust the space system restore uses on the disk by moving the slider on this page left (to decrease space usage) or right (to increase space usage. The maximum space usage is 12% and is the default.

? If you have a multiple partitions on your system or multiple disks: Click on the drive you want to adjust in the available drives section on the System Restore page and then click the settings option. You can then adjust the space system restore uses on that drive by moving the slider to the left (to decrease space usage) or right (to increase space usage). The maximum space usage is 12% and is the default. Repeat for each drive as necessary.
You can reduce this by half and still have enough Restore Points. If is up to you how many you need to keep

If possible turn off System Restore on all but the partition where the OS is installed

3. Run CCleaner and get it to remove all temporary files

Try running the Disk Cleanup Tool and empty your recycle bin. Then run this scan:Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

A:false free space shown on hardrive

How are you downloading? Many downloading programs preallocate the space for the files being downloaded so even if you have only 100KB of a 700MB file it will still use the whole 700MB of disk.

SequoiaView is a pretty program that will tell you in what files your disk space hides in.

Free some space on this drive been set up yet I just moved the files from the old drive to this one BTW the old drive crashed I ve tried the detect and repair in MS Word and no help I have uninstalled MS Office and reinstalled and no help and even went into Properties and set the user up on quota with no limits and still no help So now I am at a loss and have no idea what to try next Really don t want to delete the security files because it took hours to transfer them to this computer and unless all else fails this isn t a option I want to use Now on the old box which had XP Pro this was not a problem so on Vista it should not be either but then Vista is a MS Software so this is understandable Actually the old box had a gig hard drive so I think it actually has something to do with the O S VISTA but after fooling with this for two days that could just be me Now not sure if I posted in the correct forum if not please move to the correct forum nbsp

Hi,
I believe that this is a common problem and indeed one plaguing me! My data D drive is basically full and I wondered if there was any way to free some space and stop these notifications appearing. I have recently bought an external hard drive so can store things if required?

I couldn't put a screen shot directly on here (pc iliterate!) so have hopefully attached one?

Look forward to someones help!

Regards

Paul

A:Data D drive is nie on full. How can I free some space?

Hi Paul and welcome to the forum
Attache the new one to a usb slot, format it and then copy your data from D then verify that the copied data is working and delete all on D.
Or you can swap the D drive with the new one.
If you are in need for more help, just do it.
Good luck

I have noticed over the course of the last few days that I slowly losing some HDD space. A few days ago I had 183 GB free on my main drive, then I had 182 a couple days ago. Yesterday I had 181, today I also have 181, but I went from 181.8 to 181.6 somehow.

I've been running CCCleaner.

I had a virus scare in March, so I've been doing daily McAfee full virus scans as well as frequent Malwarebytes scans since. I do daily updates on McAfee. I do not know what it going on. Is this minor hdd loss due to doing frequent virus scans? My scans come out clean.

I've heard that Window 7 does often make shadow copies of system files. Does McAfee trigger the creation of these?

A:Losing a bit of free space on HDD day by day... Is this related to daily full scans?

Your gains or losses if you prefer to look at it that way are totally normal. The virus scans, except for a log don't really affect much except for some extra disc wear. When you run CCleaner as long as you're deleting Temp and Internet Temp files you're getting the bulk of the stuff. Try running Disc Cleanup under Accessories>System Tools in case something is being missed. Do not compact the registry or bleach free space. It's not necessary and can cause problems.

I have extremely little free space on my 80 GB HD and I tried to defragment in Windows Vista (different than defragmenting in XP), and it didn't defragment. I'm assuming that it CAN'T defragment with very little free space on the HD. I just erased some stuff and now have 5.02 GB free. The HD use indicator went from the normal blue to red - and is still red.

How much free space do I need to have on my 80 GB HD for Vista-defragmentation to happen pretty much the way it's supposed to happen?

Redistibution was unsuccessful as the Linux drives are not visible. When the computer reboots the D: drive files were gone and the drive type shows UNFORMATTED.

Is there a way to have my files back on D: drive?

On my Windows XP pro computer I have an 80 gb hardrive. The drive was formated to NTFS. I got an error message today that said I was low on disk space so I took my 40+ gb movie collection and started copying them to cds. After a successful burn I would delete them from my hardrive. Unfortunatly I soon noticed that my movie files (upwards of .5 gb apiece) were not giving me extra space after I deleted them. I checked my recycle bin, no movie files there, but i emptyied it anyway. I also checked my Nero folder to make sure it hadn't saved any of the ISO's, it hadnt. Does anyone know why deleting these movie files has no affect on my disk space?

A:Deleting Files, but does not free up space

Do you have Norton Utilities (or equivalent type application) installed? If so, sometimes when you delete an item and empty the recycle bin, you still need to "Empty Norton Protected Files" to free up the space.

Also, did you try rebooting and checking the disk space? I'm not sure if that does anything, but worth a try?

Not sure what "free space errors" might be...but running the chkdsk /r command on a partition results in a check of free space (last step0.

The chkdsk /r should be run before defragging, IMO.

Thanks

My NTFS non-system partition is now almost well defragmented. However this applies only to small and medium sized files.

There are still approx 40 big files (> 1 GB) which cannot be defragmented because there is no free single (!) space slot where they fit in.

So I need a way to shift all occupied clusters to get free contigous space on my hard disk.
Currently about 150 GB is be free on my partition but divided into thousand of individual chunks.

I tried now half a dozend of defragmenters.
Sad but true: NO (!) one was able to perform this easy operation.

Can someone recommend me a real defragmenter which is able to perform such a "shift" operation?

Thank you
Peter

A:How to shift all free space on hard disk to get contigous free space?

I'm not sure exactly what you have and exactly what you are trying to do.

I personally use Windows 7 built in defrag and have found nothing better.

Windows 7 will put things like Windows 7 wants and needs things put.
The Windows 7 defrag or 3rd party defrag programs doesn't care where you want things put or what order you want them.

As far as I know you will have no control over such things.
You are obviously using a 3rd party defrag tool because you are watching the little colored squares and noticing what looks like free spaces between things. Why things are defragged in the fashion they are I really don't know.
What I do know is Windows 7 defrag put things in the order that Windows 7 wants them and that is what counts.

Hi! I used to be able to burn CDs without any problem...for some reason it doesn't work anymore and I've tried quite a few things after troubleshooting by searching for solutions on-line. When I insert my CD which already has a few files on it, the details shows that there is no free space but yet only 3.43MB of data on it (it should go up to 700MB). I'm therefore unable to burn more data and I've tried the same with a blank CD, it says the same (no free space even though there is nothing on the CD yet). I have already tried uninstalling the driver and it didn't fix the problem. When I right-click Properties for the drive and go to Recording tab, the 'enable CD recording on this device' is checked as it should be. Can someone point me in the right direction? THANK YOU

Hi there, my names Jim.

As the title says, My C drive is almost full and I can't find any files to get rid of to clear space.

This is an Acer 5315 laptop running Vista HOME BASIC and the drive is split into two 31.5 Gb partitions.

I've tried showing hidden files but that really didn't show much more than I can find already.

I've also been googling for ages but haven't had much success.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

I have about a zillion old-car pictures in various files, and need to get them off without losing the pics. I do not have a cd-burner- is there some other means of collecting and saving them? My computer is old enough to have the older-style connections, so the little usb thingies don't plug in.
I am a couplete novice when it comes to working with this thing, and need fairly specific, step-by-step help.

Hey, guys. Windows Vista user here and I'm losing free space it seems by DELETING files.

Last week I has 289 GB free of 455 and now I have 304 GB. For some reason this number keeps rising after I empty my recycle bin and run the CCleaner scans. Is this normal? Sorry if it's a stupid question.

Hey,
I have a 60gb SSD that is unsurprisingly always nearly used up, but I cant see what is using up most of this space. I have 3-4 applications that must be using up less than 10gbs altogether and all my mp3's and movies etc are stored on a seperate drive.
For example, my user folder shows up in properties as being 10.3gb in size, but the cumulative total of all the folders in my user folder comes to about 2gb. Wheres the 8.3gb gone?!

Am I missing something here? Is there a tool I can use to see what is using up so much space? Am I the tool (probably)?

Hope this is the right board.

Cheers, Paddy

I decided to move all of my data files under a primary folder to make backing up my personal data files easier. I did a check before and after of my free space and surprisingly, my free disk space has more than doubled after doing this (and I did not delete any files, nor did I empty my Trash after moving the files).

This happened on the primary disk AND a backup drive I have at the house. The first time I did it I thought I was losing it, but after taking before and after snapshots again with my backup drive, I'm convinced I'm not

Is there any explanation as to why Win7 is reporting more than double the free disk space when all I've done is moved all of my personal data files under a main folder???? It just makes no sense.

Thanks,

Andy

A:Seeing over double free disk space after moving files around...

Hmmm.......

Does the amount of free space you NOW see at least roughly correspond to what you'd expect to see?

Do other hard drive tools also report much more free space?

Do you seem to be missing anything? All apps work and all personal files appear to be there and OK?

Offhand--maybe you had 2 instances of each file and now have only 1?

Do you or did you keep this data somewhere under C:\users?

Libraries are foreign to me and for that reason I don't use them, but they may have caused you some confusion.

I keep my data OUTSIDE of C:\users on D, with no connection to the library.

I have a small HD, and my budget doesn't allow me to buy a new one or any storage system like external HDs or DVD recorders, etc.
I want to use Google Drive to upload files, using the Desktop version installed in Windows. It works ok for me to put the files there, and forget about it since the uploads are in the background.
I don't want these services or applications running unless it's because I'm uploading the files.
The thing is, I do not want to backup in the sense of sharing files and syncing them or having more than one copy of my things.
I only want one copy, but that copy to be online so I can free space in the Hard Disk.
If you have ideas with Spideroak, Crashplan or Dropbox, I use those services as well, but what I want is the same. To store online without having a copy in my computer.
Any ideas?

Essentially you cannot do this with the software/programs these companies provide. They are designed to upload and download while storing on the hdd. In order to get copies into the cloud and off of your hdd then you should use the websites of dropbox, google drive, etc.. and sign in there, following with what you want uploaded. If they are pictures/videos/text documents you will be able to view them in the web browser, but for editing purposes and the such you would most likely need hard drive access. Basically to achieve what you want, the best way i can think of is to bookmark these websites and have your browser configured to automatically log into these services. There you can view files, and possibly edit some with features like google docs, but every time u want to use portable apps or other apps that are larger, or uncommon you will need to download them for temporary use.

A:Free disk space does not increase after deleting files

Welcome to the Seven Forums Jack101.

I suggest that instead of using Defraggler you use Puran Defrag and carry out a boot-time defrag.

Now about free disk space. Sometimes the correct free disk space shows up after a reboot. However from your message it would appear that you have already tried that but without success. Another way to find out how much free space exists is to open the Command Prompt and use the "dir/p" command. Please try that and check if the free space shown is identical with what you see with your method and report back with the command prompt screen shot after dir/p has been executed.

Good luck.

You can try CCleaner to delete temporary files.

If you're confused what's using up all the space on the disk, try one of the following disk analyzing utilities:

2) WinDirStat

BTW, this is free and in my opinion, the best! Why so eager to get rid of your traces tho?

I cleaned the recycler that is showing in the same partition Where do the deleted files in my non-bootable Windows XP partition take from the disk free space? but to no avail My question is where do the deleted files in a non-bootable partition go after being deleted Certainly they don t go to C Drive recycle bin because I already checked there I even tried to work from Safe Mode but no luck yet The volume is shrinking exponentially and every file I delete still subtracts from the partition s volume although when Where do the deleted files in my non-bootable Windows XP partition take from the disk free space? I selected all showing and hidden files the volume is not even of what is used from the partition If it matters here is some extra info I am using a company s Toshiba Tecra lab top and I am not the administrator The cluster size on both the C and F are the typical k or bytes for XP I thought of reducing this size to bytes at least in the non-bootable to see if that helps any These burnings deletings happened when I was off the company s network which runs Trend Micro Client Server Security Agent so definitely these deleted files are somewhere on this non-bootable partition or somewhere else on this hard drive I am not using any Norton Firewall Anti-Virus etc but I am not quite sure if the Trend Micro has a protected Recycle Bin quot System Volume Information quot directory has bytes on both this non-bootable partition and the C Drive When I run Diskeeper and defragment this partition I see all these contiguous deleted files in a nice compact blue line Could it be a virus that I am dealing with here Sorry for the typo in post title it should read Why do deleted files on my Non-bootable partition take from free space

A:Where do the deleted files in my non-bootable Windows XP partition take from the disk free space?

Just my opinion: Since this is a company system...it seems (to me) that this is a matter for the company's IT personnel...not one for individual suggestions by an unknowing audience.

Especially so since an enterprise network may be involved.

I have a 20 gb NTFS drive that i partitioned to C: 6gb for system files and E: 14gb for programs. I have a second hard drive for data I: 40gb. The C: drive is getting full. when trying to defragment C:, the report shows a bunch of fragmented files in a path called "/RECYCLED". I cannot seem to find that path anywhere on that drive, so I cannot delete those files! Any advice? I also would like to resize the partitions, will QTparted work for NTFS partitions? OR, any chance I can move my system to the 40gb I: drive (probably not).

I run xp home edition. Awhile ago had some problems with PC and it did file memory dumps. Have looked through threads here unable to succesfully find location of memory dump files to delete and in crease space on the c drive. that is the only had drive on the PC.

A:XP Find memory dump files to increase space on cdrive

Memory Dump files are pretty small in size usually, If you do a Disk Cleanup (right click the C: drive/Properties)it will delete these files. Then go to Add Remove programs and remove any programs you no longer use. Download CCleaner and Analyze your C: drive and run the cleaner. (removes Temp files, same as Disk Cleanup but more efficient). What takes up a lot of space is System Restore files. Right click My Computer/Properties/System Restore tab. Put a check box in Turn Off System Restore on All Drives. This will erase all of your System Restore points. If you have enough space for System Restore Uncheck the box to create a new Restore point

Hi, for months my C: (120 SSD) had only 2GB left of free space. So I finally purchased a 250GB SSD to replace it with. I received the drive last week and the box has been sitting on my desk. This morning I noticed that all of a sudden my C: drive is no longer in the red... I now have 30GB of free space. How can this be? I didnt uninstall any programs! All that occured on my PC is a windows update the other night...

Possible explanations?

A:Why did I suddenly go from 2GB free space to 30GB free space??

There is the system maintenance troubleshooter that runs at 1am.
Issues it looks for:
-Troubleshooting history is taking up disk space
-Broken shortcuts
-System time is set incorrectly
-There are icons on the desktop that haven't been used in 3 months.
-Disk volume errors
-Error reports are taking up disk space

Could be disk cleanup, you could also try running that as well. It now has the new mode windows update cleanup which removed older updates that have been unnecessary as new ones replaced it. That will save you even more space.

Maybe a program updated as well.

With all these combinations it can be possible you received a good chunk of free space. However, since you stated you have not run disk cleanup or have done anything, windows might have went nutz and has been wrong about your disk usage and just now got it right.(I am thinking this is the case.)

Or you have not restarted in awhile, and this is when disk information is updated.

Where has the rest of the space gone?
Is this just a normal thing?
If so why?
And if not, what can i do?

Need Help! Windows itself takes up gb and then I expected some extra in files and such Now my problem is this When in on My Computer Or just computer as vista calls it the bar underneath my C disk icon showed Right after reformatting that I only had gb free space A coupkle minutes later it showed gb free and a couple minutes after that gb free as of now it says gb free This is without installing or savibng anything on the disk I reformatted the drive because the problem had arisen before except that it had got to a stage where I had about kb free space and so the computer would not boot The interesting ting is this I have never installed any major programs besides video driver firefox and such on my C drive I saved all my files in my D partition When I select the C disk and right click properties I get the same information as when I look at the disk from My Computer but when I enter the disk and ctrl a and then select properties the space drops to the expected value of about gb So I pit my question to you fine people What is taking up all this space I know this sounds strikingly similar to recent questions within astrophysics The issue though is that I can t do anything about it and I cant delete files that are non existent Please if anyone has encountered Solved: Hardrive full of nothing! Hi, I'm, new to this so I hope I'm not breaking any rules here.

So here's my problem. I recently removed my other operating system (I had a dual boot set up, both XP), but my hard drive is still full. I don't see any data leftover from the old OS but for some reason, my hard drive seems to have the same amount of space left on it from before I removed the other xp. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
K.K

Hey everyone, I've had this problem on my other PC for a little while now, but have only just bothered to post anything here.

I installed Windows as normal on this particular computer, and used it for quite a while without any problems. Then at one point(very randomly), the space available on the hard drive just started to rapidly decrease, from about 40GB(the original amount) to around 5-6GB. I did install some programs, but altogether they were only about 1.5GB....

So, basically, I appear to have 6GB of hardrive space remaining, when I should have nearly 40GB. That, really, renders the machine pointless for the purpose which I wanted to use it.

Anyone have any idea what's wrong?

Someone told me to just try reinstalling Windows, bit I don't know.....

I have Vista 64 bit partitioned in Hardrive C, and Hardrive D is used for data. At least that is the set-up on the Acer 6930g.

Now, I installed the armA demo straight from their website and for some reason it was taking too long to install, so I dumped it. I lost 2gigs on the process.

So I looked around and found a program which I used to looking for those missing gigs. I got WinDirStat but found nothing strange. I decreased my pagefile.sys from 4gigs to 1gig (min 512mb).

Now I just plugged my external Seagate via USB and all of a sudden I lost another 2gigs. I haven't authorized, so I want to know why do I keep missing more gigs.

This is really pissing me off.

Btw I keep losing hardrive space on the O/S drive.

A:I keep losing hardrive space.

Hi -

The first thing I would suggest to you is to change your page file back to OS drive and system managed. If your system crashes/ BSODs, the now-inadequate page file will prevent it from producing a crash dump file. Change your system crash settings to produce a full kernel dump file - this will produce both a full kernel and mini kernel dump file when and if the time comes.

Then, please follow the instructions in THIS post and paste the VSS output in your next post.

Also - please take a screen shot of Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) and post.

Regards. . .

jcgriff2

EDIT: - I just noticed that you posted the VSS article link in the other post. Small world!

My C hardrive has just 924MB available and I cannot even defrag my computer. How can I (1) either change the partition so I can enlarge the C hardrive part by taking a larger share of the D hardrive part of the partition, or, (2) move some large programs from the C hardrive to the D hardrive part of the partition without losing any functionality or files?

Not sure if I have a virus or not (I scanned my computer with Microsoft Security Essential and it says there are no viruses) But my laptop's hard drive keeps on running out of space. 3 days ago it went from 30 GB to 700MB and I definitely did not download 29 gigs. Before whenever I scanned my computer, some space would come up afterwards but this time it stayed the same. I tried scanning with CCleaner and freed up only 70 MB. So does anyone know what might be the cause?

Hi

I tried to free up space on my hardrive by removing programmes that I do not use and moving files that contained all my videos and pictures to an external hardrive. When I went in to my computer to see how much space I had gained it showed no increase. This is strange as the amount of pictures I had were vast. Could anybody tell me the reason for this.

Many thanks

Hi there. I'm installing WinXp home edition on a second harddrive for the purposes of making that drive a digital audio workstation.

I want to optimize xp for that purpose and am trying to follow this guide to do that:

http://alexbloggt.de/music-software/windows-xp-daw-optimization-guide/

I should have read this closer before installing. I am allowing xp-setup to format the entire drive into one NFTS partition. But, this guide says you should divide it into two partitions with about 10GB for the OS and the applications. The harddrive I am using is nearly 80GB.

I suppose I could start the entire installation over again, but if I do that will the OS partition still be able to access the second partition used for storage purposes?

Just how bad will it be to have the one partition, instead of two?

A:limiting hardrive space of OS and apps?

download Paragon it's a free program that will let you make another partition even though you already have one , It's free and easy to use download it and then go here to get the key for it .

Hi,
I have been having some issues with virus-like symptoms eating up the hardrive space on my laptop. In addition to missing hardrive space, my external hardrives are not being read by the laptop. I have ran a system restore and performed several Malwarebytes scans with no positive results. The only thing that appears out of the ordinary besides the missing hardrives is the window's security alert pop up that comes up every once in a while.
Little help please?
Thanks.

How do I put the hard drive space used and free space on the Partition C: ? Partition D:\ and Partition E:\ has it but for some reason drive C:\ is missing it doesn't say how much space is used and how much space is free. The GBs are missing

A:How to bring back the amount of free space and used space on a hard drive

I'm a little confused about your question

You can't see how much drive space you have left when viewing your C drive via My Computer, or similar?

If you right-click on My Computer and select Manage, when the new window pops up click on Disk Management from the left hand side. What does that tell you about C drive? Assuming your C drive is actually a hard drive (and not a CD drive or something, though I have never heard of this happening and don't even know if it's possible to have C as your CD drive), you should see details at the top of the screen such as how much space you have left, by percentage of total capacity, as well as GB

Am I the only one to notice and complain over this in W8.1.

This morning a new Adobe Flash update has appeared, KB3079777. The update is sized at 17.9mb. Nothing is running on the PC, its idle and with no disk activity. Free space is 55.4GB. I apply the update and free space immediately falls to 54.9gb. This behaviour is consistent with every such patch applied. Now over time, that space will return which suggests that something else is going on here. But what ?

A:Free disk space & space used by a single Flash Update.

Looks like it is just me then. Today brought a 4.6Mb W8.1>W10 computability update. My free space changed from 55.2Gb to 54.7Gb.

Sounds about right. Ho hum....

My hard drive has started to spin at full speed for very long periods of time (hours) everyday. I intially thought someone had hijacked my computer but have done the following; run spyware,anti-virus,with no results, tried increasing firewall security, disconnected internet connection, went into Task Manager and no applications or processes are running, disabled some tasks in Task Scheduler that were running to no avail.Went into the start-up menu and add/remove programs and do not see any unrecognized programs. I have a Q6700 [email protected] with 6gb of memory running vista 64 bit home premium with a Hitachi HDS721075KLA330 hardrive. Any help would be appreciated

Hello

I got a new hardrive and I was trying to partition it when I accidentally made it half unallocated. So I now I'm trying to either turn it into a volume or even merge it with the other half, but I can not extend the volume I have as that option is greyed out and I can't turn my unallocated pace into a simple volume as that option is also greyed out. I hoping someone might know what I can do. Any help would be appreciated.

A:My hardrive space has suddenly dissapeared:( hellp!

Doing a clean up with Glary Utilities would be a great place to start. After that take a look at the contents of the drive with a program like SpaceMonger that will give you a graphical representation of your hard drive and what's eating up all the space. With such a samall hard drive it's likely to fill quick with video, audio and photos.

A:I delete files and "free space" doesn't change

You could check System Restore to see if it is saving copies of the videos or is it possible that some other program is saving backup copies of all your files.

System Restore,by the way is set by default to use 12% of your harddrive for restore points.

Hi, I've noticed sometimes that the Free Space on my harddrives won't reflect changes I've made. For example, on my 28.6gb F: drive, I had about 586mb free. I just deleted a video file of about 700 mb, so it should be up to about 1.2 gb. Oddly enough, its still at 586mb. I emptied the recycle bin of course.

Is there a way to recalculate disc space? I have Windows XP and I do have Norton System Works. This isn't the first time disc space hasn't matched recent actions. Thanks in advance.

A:Free Space inaccuracies?? Calculating disc space?

If the video wasn't in My Docs then 'System Restore' in XP may have recorded the change to enable a future restore. To record a 700mb deletion that it may be asked to restore back takes 700mb.
System restore ignores the My Docs folder so the above is irrelevant if the video was deleted from that location.

Hi

We just placed a new Dell Dimension. It has a 40 Gig hard drive.

User keeps getting this message:

DISK FREE SPACE HAS DROPPED BELOW THE MINIMUM THRESHOLD. FREE UP SPACE ON YOUR HARD DISK DRIVE BY:

1. BACKING UP YOUR DATA TO A TAPE BACKUP, ZIP OR NETWORK DRIVE
2. DELETE UNUSED FILES

IF YOU ARE UNSURE WHICH FILES ARE SAFE TO MOVE OR DELETE, CONTACT YOUR HELP DESK OR CONSULT YOUR SOFTWARE MANUALS.

This machine has over 30 gigs of free space. It's impossible that there is a disk space issue.

Any ideas what could be causing this? Some sort of mis-communication or setting?

Thanks

A:Disk Space Error - 30 Gigs free space

It should be a configuration setting. I'd call Dell if you just got this machine. Their "english" is a little suspect though. It sounds like some hokey Dell software reminding you to back up your drive. When does the message appear? After it boots?

and welcome to the Forum

To salvage files, You can take the drive out and temporarily attach it to a working pc to salvage the data.

Hard Drive Recovery Tutorial - How To Slave A Hard Drive

You may have to take ownership of the files first: How to take ownership of a file or a folder in Windows XP

. . or, You can use an adaptor like this: or an external enclosure like this.

or, you could use Ubuntu - this would eliminate the need to physically remove the Hard Drive.

You can get it from here: Download | Ubuntu

Step #2 on that page shows you how to create the USB/CD.

Once you boot into Ubuntu, (choose the option where it runs off the USB/CD) you can use it to copy your files from the Windows Partition to an external hard drive (Note: Do not copy anything to the Ubuntu Filesystem as it will not be saved on shut-down)

Then you can reinstall. If you have the Dell System restore ( not all Dells do ) you can use that and you will not need a install CD

Dell - Technical Support

If not, You can get a reinstallation guide specific to your Dell here

You can request a replacement installation cd here:

Installing XP on a SATA drive requires an additional step:

XP Help And Support: 108. How Do I Install Windows XP On A SATA Hard Drive

However, Most newer BIOS allow an Alternate method for SATA . . Go into the bios and check the "Sata Operation" setting,

change it to "Raid Autodetect/ATA if it is not already. Now try to install XP ( could be IDE Mode, Compatibility Mode or Legacy Mode - different BIOS use different terms )

some will say IDE instead of ATA)

If there are no such settings you'll need to slipstream the sata drivers on the XP CD, follow the instructions in this guide :

Well now, when I go to reinstall, it will not automatically start so I clicked on my computer and dvd-rw Drive (E and there are no files, in fact it states that my my file system is CDFS and the CDA Default - Full ___ It says all space used 672 MB and Free Space 0 Bytes

What the heck happened, I am no computer wizard so can you please help me to correct this, I can't download the Photosmart program back onto my computer ????

I have a Seagate 320GB USB External Hardrive and I formatted it to exfat to try and get my playstation 3 to read it. The playstation couldnt read it still so I want to now format it to fat32 but my problem is since I have formatted it to exfat my Windows Vista wont even read it. I plugged it in to the computer and the lights on it light up but when I go to My Computer to look at the drives it only displays the C: drive and nothing else. How do I make my computer read the hard drive????

Hey everyone...

I am using a toshiba laptop running windows 7 and put together a 2 tb external hard drive that connects through usb. This drive shows up when I go into disc management as disc one but it does not show up in My Computer. I have used multiple external hard drives (all pre-assembled) without any problems and always visible.

If someone could guide to how and make the drive visible, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Jimmy

Hi all

I want to install a second hard drive into my spare drive bay.

However, upon looking online for a hard drive there appears to be more than one type - IDE, ATA etc.

Is there any small piece of software that can tell me? Unfortunately, my PC came from PC world and I did not receive any kind of manual.

For information I have a Packard Bell I-Media 5051 pc, 512RAM, 40GB HD, Intel Celeron 1.8GHZ processor.

Any help would be appreciated.

Si

A:How Do I Find Out Which Type Of Hardrive I Have?

Good Morning:
I found this Packard Bell italian page with your computer's info:

http://www.packardbell.it/products/node1601.asp?partNumber=PB13209906

As you can see, your unit comes with a 160 gb hard drive. IDE and ATA will function the same. Take a look:

http://www.thepc.info/ide-scsi.html

I don't know if you need more than 160 gb, unless you are doing some serious heave multimedia storage. Good Luck!
