This is the strangest thing I've seen in the past years of using computers I have an Acer Aspire - laptop that came with windows but I'm very picky and I wanted Windows xp back so I went onto Acer's website and won't mouse USB slot USB first other in works any slot, in only work but USB downloaded all of the windows xp drivers and then formatted the laptop to Windows XP with intergrated Service Pack The computer works just fine except for one very strange oddity - the USB mouse I'm using only works when plugged into the first USB slot it will refuse to work in the other USB slots I'm using a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer USB which is my favorite mouse and I USB mouse only works in first USB slot, but won't work in any other USB slot have of them at home When I was formatting the laptop USB mouse only works in first USB slot, but won't work in any other USB slot I had the mouse plugged into the first USB slot and now that is the ONLY slot it will work in If I plug it into the other usb slots the red laser will come on which means it's getting power but it will not move the cursor and clicking either of the mouse buttons won't do anything When I have the Device Manager open and I plug the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer mouse into the first USB slot the 'Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer ' entry will appear in BOTH the 'Human Interface Devices' tab and also the 'Mice and other pointing devices' tab However when plugging the mouse into the other usb slots the 'Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer ' entry will only appear in the 'Human Interface Devices' but NOT the 'Mice and other pointing devices' tab I could just go about my business using the first usb slot for the mouse but this little strange problem is pissing me off hugely as I might want to switch the mouse to another USB slot based on how I have the laptop positioned on a desk or other surface I should also note that the 'Human Interface Devices' tab has a 'HID compliant device' entry in it that isn't present on my desktop computer and my mouse works on any of the usb slots on my desktop computer I wonder if this is the problem I tried disabling this entry but it doesn't help any A final point to note is that I have many other usb devices such as flash memory sticks camera card readers external harddrives gps devices and they all work perfectly fine no matter which usb slot they are plugged into Very strange indeed Is there anyway to make my mouse work in any of the other USB slots
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
I have seen a similar problem, but it was all USB ports that weren't working.
First, check the BIOS to make sure all USB ports are enabled, which they probably are.
Are all drivers installed and up to date? Do any yellow question marks or exclamation points show up in Device Manager?
I use my keyboard in a USB slot, and my mouse in the basic PS2 slot.
Now I was just checking something on my GFX card at the back so I had to unplug everything from the PC. After I was done I plugged it all back in but for some reason my mouse wont work now. I tryed taking the PS2 connector off and using it in a USB (which I have none left so I cant do permanently) and it works fine.
I checked the mouse ps2 connector bit and it seems all the pins are fine in it.
Also when I plug it in, I hear the beep noise (the one you hear even without the speakers attached) so something must be happening.
But still no luck on the mouse working.
Can someone please help me.
Its ok I managed to get it fixed... somehow..
I m trying to figure out if my problem is my graphics card EVGA GTX GB or my motherboard Biostar TZ A LGA This computer is a brand new build Please click my system specs for more details I have two PCI-E slots There is one x slot and one x slot of the time my machine freezes a few seconds after powering card in work, in Graphics x4 ?? fine works x16 PCI-E doesn't the slot on at the Graphics card in PCI-E x16 doesn't work, works fine in the x4 slot ?? BIOS logo screen or a few seconds after that while inserted in the x slot Sometimes it works however yet it is so infrequently that I ve given up on the x slot for now It will even freeze after I ve entered my BIOS settings page even just while browsing around in it The same graphics card in my PCI-E x slot works fine if you ignore the fact that it s running at it s potential speed At least I can boot the machine up I ve spoken with a few different professionals about this and the conclusion is that my problem lies either a with my PCI-E x slot or b with my GTX Apparently the graphics card COULD work just fine in the x slot and still be damaged Now I know that you re going to tell me to try a different card in my computer or try the card in a different computer However that isn t practical for me at the moment I was wondering what you guys think or if anyone has experience with this first-hand What are you leaning towards Mobo or Gfx card nbsp
Should also have mentioned that I've run three passes with Memtest86 without any errors.
Hi. My laptop has 2 USB slots, 1 working perfectly fine, but another one has a problem. When I plugged a USB mouse or keyboard, nothing on screen happen. For the mouse, it light up but the cursor can't move. For the key board it doesn't light up and nothing happen. I tired flash drive, nothing happen too. BUT when I plugged an external hard drive, it work perfectly fine.
This problem just happen today, before both USB slots are working just fine. So now I can't use both mouse and keyboard at the same time
I've tried restart my computer, uninstall and reinstall all USB list in USB Controllers in Device Manager, nothing work so far
Thanks in advance

My opinion ...
Yes, setting up like that will have an impact. The air flow to your GPU will be restricted so it will more than likely run hotter than it did. It may still stay withing recommended specs, but it will run hotter.
The motherboard has onboard sound (Realtek® ALC892 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC ), any particular reason why you don't use that? Onboard sound is perfectly good for gaming and the like now, its not like older machines where you needed a dedicated card for decent quality. In my opinion, you only need a dedicated card if you are doing a lot of detailed audio work (mixing, remastering and other specific audio work). This would totally remove the issue.
ok the lady I got this comp from says the comp the video card its reading now is not as good as the one in the PCI slot so Im wondering how do I make it so it reads the PCI slot
The AGP vid card though comes out with a Adaptor to make it so you can plug in moniters
Anyway Should I leave my moniter plug in the AGP slot video card or put it where no video card is but goes right into the computer
and no there is no plug that goes into the PCI slot
I hope this is understanable

That's known as integrated graphics, now do you have a PCI video card and an APG video card or an Integrated video card and an AGP card?
Also what are they Radeon xxxx? or Nvidia xxxx? we need to know the model numbers to tell you which is the better on to use.
i have had trouble with my computer after cleaning it (can of compressed air) it would boot to log in screen then go black on the monitor or it would blue screen and restart.
after figuring out it was a RAM problem i tried another stick of RAM but same problem so i guess its the actual slot it goes into, i only have 2 on my motherboard lucky one of them is working still.
has anyone had this problem or know of a way to fix it, i am wondering if some of the canned air/gas became a liquid from spraying to close and got in it.
any help would be appreciated thanks.
ok so i have been looking into my problem more, when booting i press tab to show the POST?? or somthing and it says that 1 of the RAMs wouldnt/couldnt R/W (read write?? i dont know)
then i get the screen saying that windows has had hardware changes and asking to how i want to start windows (normal, safe mode, etc) i have tried all but it just restarts.
now its only with 1 of the 2 dimm slots this happens and i have tried differend RAM in there but only the 1 slot works
any help would be appreciated
i need to know which know which graphic card will fit for my computer. Ie i want to know which type: DDR ,DDR1 or ddr2 i bought my computer in 2007, but thats not enough to tell.
so please let me know how do i know which pci slot i have?
The type of memory doesn't matter, its the type of interface the computer supports among a few other things to watch for.
You likely have a PCI-Express slot, as long as it a x16 slot it doesn't really matter if its a version 1.1 or 2.0 slot.
Is this for your Dell or another computer? Whats you budget and what needs do you have for the video card?

My computer will shut off when I print if I have both of the ram slots filled? It will work fine with just 1 ram. Why? Any help would be appreciated
incompatible ram with motherboard
bad memory slot
bad ram stick
these are your possibilities.
test bad ram with memtest 86+ booted from a floppy or cd rom
yah just a question, and if so give me a price range please for a pci
You can't add a slot to a motherboard.
How old is this computer that it doesn't have a PCI slot? Those have been around for quite a while. Are you sure it doesn't have one? Even AGP is not new technology.
EDIT: After seeing your other thread, are you asking if you can purchase an AGP or PCI video card? That's a totally different question, and the answer would be yes depending on which slot your motherboard has. How much it costs depends on what you plan to use the computer for. A simple one is cheap, and high-end gaming cards can get expensive.
I have an old Pentium II with a Soyo motherboard and 3,3V AGP slot like
I want to buy a Geforce 2 MX400 video card and found several brands (Inno, XFX, PixelView, etc.) but I found no information about the voltages these cards work.
I'm afraid of buying a card and it doesn't work with 3,3V (despite the universal connector) and then burn my machine.
How can I identify if the card works in 3,3V? Is there any information printed on the card or in some chip?
(I looked for in many sites but there is no information about voltages)
I say get a new computer . . .
I dont even think there is a GPU that can run with a PII

I have a problem with my wireless pc card.
It works in one slot but when plugged in the other one it gets stuck on acquiring network address.
Is there any way to fix it, or are the two ports different.
According the user manual both slots are normal PC card slots so usually the WLAN card should work in both slots.
But why is it so important that the PC card works in both slots?
Do you have another PC card that you can test in second slot?
What operating system you are using and what WLAN card is it exactly?
I need an DIRECT ANSWER .. TY!!!
YES! The AGP8X card is backwards compatible, but it will only run in 4X
Basically need a cheap gpu with tv-out for movie playback,
Ive read that the 'ATI Radeon' cards have better tv-out than the equivallent 'Nvidia's so Ive decided to go with them
The card has to work in a PCI slot as the mobo has no agp.
I found a 'sapphire radeon 7000 64mb ddr PCI tv-out' ,
will this fit my needs? If not what will?

I'm using Windows Professional bit with an ASUS P H -M PRO motherboard I'm trying to install an ASUS HD video card I've tried both the drivers on the CD that came with the card and the latest version from ASUS's website When I use the CD the error is quot Driver Install the installation failed quot When I install the drivers via Device Manager the error is quot The operation returned because the timeout period expired quot It takes about minutes to attempt to install during which time nothing is happening according to Task Manager The card does function with the quot Video Controller VGA Compatible quot drivers but obviously not very well REDACTED See below My quot Windows Experience Index quot is now instead of with my onboard video I upgraded because the new card supports higher resolution I don't see any visual difference perhaps because this computer is never used for gaming Is this a problem Thanks PianoGuy
What happens when the card is in the pci-e slot and you turn on the machine ?
Does windows attempt to install drivers ?
Hey out there, before I go out and buy a new motherboard(AGAIN) will my e-geforce 7300gt pci-e card work in my AGP 8xslot, if so is it worth doing or should I go out and get a PCI-e ready motherboard?
I'm new ish to tech talk about comps, i just build them with help from my professional buddies, so bare with me!!
Nope, completely different and incompatible slots. Can you exchange your vid card for an agp version? If not, then you will need a new mobo.

Will an 8x video card work in a 2x agp slot? I currently have a Nvidia GeForce 256 32mb 4x card and want to upgrade to a GeForce 5200fx 128mb 8x. I have a 2x agp slot.
I posted this once before but didn't get it solved, so I figured I'd post it again:
I have a HP Pavilion ze4365us computer. I recently wiped the hard drive clean, and installed XP Pro (it came with XP Home). I got all new drivers from HP for everything. But the PCMCIA slot still won't work. When I plug my external wireless card into it, the card lights up, so I don't think it's the card, but the computer won't recognize the connection. Not sure what to do about the issue. It's kind of annoying, considering my internal card is busted also.
If you don't know how to solve this problem, then maybe you can recommend an alternate way of connecting wirelessly to the net. I have two USB 1.1 ports, and a firewire port.
got a while ago this mb and cpu.
runs all fine now.
but i got a 128 MB vid card.
Ati Radion 9200 or something similar.
how ever i got
K8NGM2-L (GeForce 6100 + nForce 410)
[Onboard 10/100 LAN]
is it that it has Nvidia chips on it. that is wont let me use my AGP ?
atleast there is some AGP slot.
and the card fits in.
also i checked Bios and did find something. that sounded like "Disable onBoard IF Video card is found."
or must i really drop one of those pci express vid cards in it to make it work ?
I just upgraded the video card in another computer with a new 8x 256 MB, the one I took out is an ATI Radeon 9800 pro 8x, Can I put this into my Dell Dimension that currently has a 64MB 4x i it right now. On the dell I am running one AGP 4x 64MB and one pci card 64MB. Will I see an improvement if the new card is compatible with my dual setup?
i was looking at best buy's memory center thing online. So I choose my PC manufacture and model then under the specs it says:
bus architecture- PCI/AGP
Someone please tell me that means AGP cards will work on my system.
First of all, I want to say that you can never put a card into another designated slot. Do you know what motherboard model you have? You can find out by downloading this and opening the cpuz.exe file and then going to the mainboard tab. Mainboard = Another name for motherboard .
The SD card reader slot on my Gateway laptop doesnt read my sd cards upon insertion. It is not the card, because I have tried multiple SD cards and they all do not work. There is no error message or anything, the drive just does not appear in my computer like it used to so that I can view the files on the card. I have had this problem previously, and it was fixed by repairing my texas instruments controller thing in device manager, but it is working ok when i look at it in device manager now without the slot working. Any help is appreciated!
I'm thinking of grabbing a Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty Titanium Sound Card for Christmas as I am fed up of the distortion of bass from my onboard sound but there is a question which I am curious as to what the answer is...
Would the Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty Titanium work better when slotted into a PCI-e x16 slot rather than the PCI-e x1 slot?
Cheers for your answers
No,it will just use the same contacts as the pci express 1 slot uses.
Although you could use it that way if you need the space.it's not
going to make any performance difference.
I HAVE A FX 5500 AGP 8X,MY MOTHERBOARD HAS AN AGP 4X SLOT,MY PC DOES NOT START when i plug this card in, i have a 230 w power supply is this the problem?

Hi guys i have a problem I switched my Soundblaster X-FI Titanium from its PCI-E x slot to the last PCI-E Slot on my Motherboard which is a PCI-E Slot anymore after PCI-E switch work dont Soundblaster x which can according to literature operate in X or X Mode Slot on the ASUS Z Pro The Lowest Slot before it was in the nd from the bottom The reason I did that is because I want to add Soundblaster dont work anymore after switch PCI-E Slot another Soundcard which otherwise Soundblaster dont work anymore after switch PCI-E Slot would be too close to my GEFORCE GTX and would compromise the airflow So as I said I switched the Slots Now I have problem making it work Does it mean I have to reinstall the Creative Drivers again Because some of the Applications like the Konsole Starter and Creative Sound Panel etc wouldn't recognize the card at the new PCI-E slot anymore I could still listen to music when I choose the Soundcard in my Media Player now marked -Creative Soundblaster instead of formerly just Creative Soundblaster Is that a general problem that was to be expected or is something else going wrong here Any help is appreciated Thank you Wolfseye
I reinstalled all Drivers etc from the Soundblaster Titanium. I can now choose the Card in Players such as Winamp or AIMP3 and enjoy the sound on my 5.1 Headphones. However, using it for any other Systemsound like the Browser with Youtube, i will only hear Bass Sounds in my Headphones. In settings from Creative, where I can choose the Bass Boost (Crossover Frequency), when having Systemsounds like in a Browser, when I have that activated (as I said) i only head Bass sounds. When I disable Bass boost (Crossover Frequency), i hear nothing. But when I click it again, for a millisecond I hear the normal sound again. But only for a millisecond.
Whats that issue ? Just because I switched the PCI-E slots for the card ? Really need help ! Thanks in advance.
Ok so, I fried my motherboard a while back and am just now getting an Abit barebone kit with a brand new motherboard and was wondering whether my DDR RDIMM will work in the new DDR2 RIMM memory expansion slots?

I intend to buy the Radeon HD 5450. It has PCI-e 2.1 x16 bus interface.
My motherboard model is Foxconn WinFast NF4K8MC. It has PCI-e 1 x16 graphics slot.
My query is- will the graphics card work with this motherboard or not?
Kindly respond fast plz..
Thanks in advance,
I'm using a 5850 in a pci-e 1 x16
I see no reason why it wouldn't, though foxconn is not nearly as high end a board as the one I have.
that is to say the interface is backwards compatible.
I had installed windows xp professional as new and all the hp/compaq nc6000 drivers from the HP website. Everything works except the feature provided with the laptop the sd slot to copy data from doesn't. Before the new winxp installation, the laptop had winxp professional and by just inserting the SD chip the computer detected it. Then, it provided a letter for the drive to access files in the chip. Now, it does not see it at all. No indication of the chip when inserted in the computer. The chip is fine as I tested it with an external reader. There are no drivers if any listed that I could see on the HP support website for the SD chip. I have installed the usb, touch mouse/keyboard drivers. The SD slot does not read the SD chip. Please help
I just got a Asus A8N-SLI mother board and a pny 7800gt video card. The card only works in the bottom pci express slot though, when i try to plug into the top the monitor light keeps blinking like nothings going through. Everything seems to work fine when in the bottom slot but i am worried about the heat. I have my sound card close to that so theres not much flow between like their would be in the top slot. (also the top slot is blue, bottom is black, if that makes a difference) I left the default set at single card mode on the motherboard. Also being in that slot is the card running at full capacity? 16x?
My other specs are:
1gb Corsair value select ram
Antec 450Watt SmartPower 2.0 PSU
AMD 64 3700
mmm... Check out the BIOS option for the SLI cause it could be that just one slot is enabled (the bottom on)...
about the heat issue... can you move the sound card to another slot?...

Sure sounds like the socket is bad, or the memory controller. You may have to live with a single DIMM in the bottom slot.

As far as I know, the RAM slots on a motherboard don't come with an "enable/disable" feature. They either work or they don't. The usual method to see if a RAM slot is working is to take a known working memory module and try it in each slot. Since you've already done that I think it's a pretty good probability the slot isn't working.
Here is a free diagnostic tool that can analyze and benchmark many kinds of hardware, such as CPU performance, hard disk performance, video system information, mainboard / motherboard information, etc. It might possibly be able to verify if that slot is bad. But even if it can't confirm the slot's good/bad status, I still think you've done that. And it may only be a matter of time before the entire motherboard fails.

Intel Pentium 4 2.0a GHz

Intel extreme graphics card 64mb(Upgrading to GeForce FX 5200 128mb ddr with AGP 8x this weekend)
Guys I need help urgently and fast. I want to know how to check my AGP slots speed before I get the GeForce. Is there a way to do that when there’s nothing in the slot?
Some Please help me.
I just got a mobo called EliteGroup K7vta3 VIA chipset. its showed that it had a 4x agp slot. i thought i could run my newly bought Radeon x700. when i put the card in i got no video signal on my monitor. i had power going to the card an everything. i uninstalled the other video card witch was a PCI Geforce FX 5200. i switch the bios from PCI to AGP. still didnt work. i went into the BIOs an found the switch for turning it from 2x to 4x yet 4x wasnt there. was i a victum of false adverntising or is there some update to get that 4x to show?
Welcome to TechSpot!
Are u sure the X700 is an AGP one? And what do u mean by a PCI FX5200? If u try to force ur X700 into the PCI slot it will damage the mobo. Explain more thoroughly so we can help u here.
Been quite some time since I wrote last to you and I hope I have this in the correct place.
This is what happened to me this morning. I was going to put my Windows 98 cd-rom in the slot (and did) but I'd forgotten I had one in there, so I shut the door and it started whirring and wheezing and then it just stopped making noise, so I guess the cd-rom is someplace in my computer.
Can someone tell me what to do? Please remember that I'm an ol' grandma and don't know about the "insides" of the computer but my hubby tried to see if we could find it and took the cover off the case; couldn't see it. Do you think it's somewhere in where the slot is? I opened the door and didn't see anything.
Would be grateful for any help.
Thanks so much,
i have a soyo 5ema+ m/b and an amd k6 III/333
my diognostics program says there is a agp bus but it isnt enabled, the card is in the agp slot
HOW DO I GET IT ENABLED????????

you might try resetting the bios
How can I tell what type of AGP slot I have? (4x, 8x) It says AGP Pro slot, and that's all
hav u tried everest?
i have a 4x agp graphics card, what i want to know is, will my 4x agp graphics card work in an 8x agp slot?
Normaly yes, but to be sure you can always check the documentation that came with the card. It mentions the kind of Agp slots that are supported.
But you can be as good as 100% sure that it will fit
Ok, I'm thinking about buying this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-Veng.../dp/B008E3M4TU) for my PC, I have already got both the blue slots filled. So which one do I put my new slot in to? 1,2,3 or 4 (2 and 4 are available)
My MotherBoard Gigabyte GA-Z77M-D3H-MVP Motherboard [GA-Z77M-D3H-MVP] - $95.00 : PC Case Gear
Thanks for the help!
Hello RvB Mate it should tell you in the users manual as a general rule and I stand to be corrected it is usually the slot nearest the CPU for stick 1 (slot 1) of 2 sticks and slot 3 for the second stick. But my Asus Z77 (slots 2 and 4) is the opposite so check your manual - or Gigabyte if you can get any sense out of them.http://www.sevenforums.com/performance-maintenance/290612-new-ram-slot.html
I've been offered to get a free AGP graphics card, an ATI Radeon 8500LE, and I need to find out if it will work in my computer. My computer is an HP Pavilion 531w, and I need to know how I find out if I have an AGP slot. Help?
I'm buying a VC-11 MB that has a CNR slot at the bottom. Why? What's the great catch with this. It already has onboard LAN: Realtek RTL8100L 10/100Mbps LAN. What's ya'll's take on that?
CNR's can be for modems as well. There is probably one that comes with the board. Kind of an outmoded connector before they even put the thing on the market.
I was recently looking at my old 486 M/B running a 486 DX-2 at 80 Mhz. (Overclocked from 66 Mhz.). I noticed that it has three brown slots almost like AGP Slots, but they were placed at the back of the ISA Slots, so I think they can't be expansion slots. What are they?
I have an inexpensive motherboard that is about 1.5 years old that the AGP slot has gone bad in. When I say gone bad, it's that the contacts in the slot have widened out and no longer works. I know that this is the problem because if you are lucky enough to actually get it to work, then slightly move the card, it goes dead. My question is if I buy a PCI video card will that work? I have three open PCI slots. This is all due to financial reasons. I can buy another motherboard, but then I'd have to buy another power supply because this one is a 20 pin and almost all of them nowadays are 24 pin. The computer is only used for going online and nothing more. It's my parent's computer. So do you think a PCI video card would work? Thanks in advance...
Yep, it will work. The only catch might be you'd have to set your BIOS for a PCI video card rather than AGP, but it should even autodetect. Hopefully you are correct that it is just a widened slot, in my expierence if something on a motherboard dies, other things are going to follow.
My computer. Lenovo IdeaCentre K300 has a slot, about 3/4 as long as the memory slots. Does anybody know what it might be for? Because I'd sure like to fill it. I just feel a computer is not complete with empty slots.
Pre-thanks to all who reply ;0)
I'm not following. I've called up a few pics but I don't see anything other than PCIe, PCI, and DDR slots.
Could someone tell me what a PCI-e 1x slot is, and what it can be used for? Thanks.

Hi! So I just bought a new 1 gb crucial ram for my HP Pavilion Media Center TV m7750n PC, and I can't seem to fit the RAM into the slot on the motherboard (I have to force it in, and then the pc wont boot, and gives off a beeping sound). The RAM that I brought was crucial product #CT12864AA53E (1GB 240-PIN DIMM 128Mx64 DDR2PC2-4200 UNBUFFERED) and I'm sure that it matches the 2*1 GB RAM that already came with my computer (I verified the memory specifications with HP's website and other websites) Thanks for any suggestions. I am desprate for that extra 1 GB performance, because I run really memory-eating apps!
It is a fairly tight fit. Were you able to lock the end tabs of the RAM slots? Don't take this the wrong way but are you inserting it in the correct orientation? The RAM has a notch that is not in the center so you have to make sure it matches up with the corresponding notch in the DIMM slot.
Okay, I was wondering how to tell if I have any available AGP or PCI slots on my computer. The current graphics 'card' is one of those integrated chips, and I wanted to get a real card. Is there any way to tell which type of slots I have? Preferably without opening up the computer, but I will if I have to.
My comp specs might help, so here they are
1.7 Ghz Intel Celeron
227 MB RAM
32 MB Integrated Graphics Chip
14.9 GB hard drive and 23.2 gb Hard Drive
Thnx guys I really need a new card, hope comp can accept it!
Hi im new into Computer hardware and i want to know if a PCI slot is different to a PCI Express x16 slot.
PCI and PCI Express are completely different things and the slots are different too.
Trying to Overclock i think i fried ram slot 1 - I tried using 4 different sets (all matching) in slot 1 and 3 - nothing would get a good post (sigh) However in good news the ram stick that was in the slot is still good =o)
However, I tried booting with ram in slot 2 and 4 - but nothing would get a good post - is there a way to do it - rather than just running ONE stick in slot 3?
Mobo: P5B-Deluxe wifi/ap
My first slot is only like 2 inches long and is divided in two different slots. Is it AGP? Can I use it for a video card? I've been trying to install a ATI mach 64 pci card but everything seems to look worse. I just need 32bit true color. I'm running an older pentium III 550mHz. Thanks for the help.
my current graphics card, Geforce fx5600 has an AGP 4x interface. would an 8x interface fit into the same slot? thanks James
You can find some info here....
Hi I bought a graphics card that I was pretty sure that is compatible with my pc.
Here is a link for the graphics card :
It says it requires a PCI 2.1 Slot and I know that PCI 2.1 slots came out in 1995.. My pc is a 2005, model D300a Insignia. So I'm wondering if it has a PCI 2.1 slot and if it does how do I make my card work?
What I did as my first step was
-I installed it
-Went to BIOS
-Changed the integrated to PCI.
Not exactly sure what slots your motherboard has, but you should be fine as long as it has a PCI 2.0 slot. You may not get the max speed from the card, but it should operate.
If your having issues with the card aside from that, your power supply is most likely to weak to support it or you have an outdated driver. I'd first update the driver (cause that's free) and if it still does not work, I'd suspect the power supply is the problem.
So to start out, I am a complete computer novice. I know very little about computer's hardware and whatnot so please take it slow. Anywho, I've been searching for a new graphics card so I can play some newer games. My computer always exceedes minimum, and often recommended, requirements for the games except in the field of a graphics card. I currently have a Radeon 9200 128mb in my AGP slot. With this in mind, I have been searching for other cards for AGP but have run into the question of how one can identify what kind of AGP slot one has, as in 8x, 4x, etc. as well as if this matters. So if someone can help me figure out what kind of slot I have that would be great.
Any card recomendations are appreciated as well, I have around a 200$ spending limit.
You can web search/download CPU-Z. This small program has a tab that identifies what AGP slot your system has (2x, 4x, 8x) and AGP 2.0 or 3.0 standards supported.
(Edit- direct link for CPU-Z website, just "Download Latest Version" top-left link):
If your system is even semi-modern, you likely have at least an AGP 4x slot, whereas 99% of today's AGP cards will work in either AGP 4x or 8x slots.
More importantly will likely be your power supply. You likely have a very wide upgrade path available to you, only reduced by your budget, but newer 3d cards do draw significantly more power. I'd recommend cracking your case and looking at your power supply for the sticker to see what top wattage it's rated at and if it has info on the voltage rails vs. amperage. It's important what amperage the 12v rail has and top wattage (example: 350W power supply with [email protected]).
How do I determine what PCI slot I have 2.0 or 2.1? My computer is about 3 years old and is running Windows XP. Its a Dell if that helps.
Thanks in advance...
I suggest you look in the manual. If you don't have one, get one from Dell's web site.
I have a quick question regarding being able to insert a PCI-E x16 in a PCI-E x4 slot - is this possible? Would it act like the way USB x2 works in the way of backwards compatibility?
The reason I ask is I want to get another card along with my current one which is PCI-E x16 and I only have a spare PCI-E x4 slot available, this is so I can use x3 monitors for a multi setup.
I have integrated graphics. It's the "choke point" in my system. I am not clear on graphics card upgrades. This is a simple question for most of you guys. Can I go out and buy a new PCI express card and disable my integrated graphics and use this slot for a new graphics card? I am confused....sorry for the newbie question.
P.S. what does GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 mean? Is it the motherboard and integrated graphics? It is listed as "chipset" in the system specs. I thought "chipset" was the motherboard.
Hello again.... (less than 5 mins later...)
Ok so now that your other post has been cleared up, let me get this one for ya.
Yes integrated graphics suck. Go buy a good video card, and put it into the PCIe16 slot, and plug in your monitor. You should be good to go (though read the installation instructions that come with the card) You do not need to disable your integrated graphics, so don't worry about that. Don't worry about asking dumb questions, everyone has them. (That includes all of us "skilled" or whatever rating....)
The GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 describes your integrated graphics. That is equal to a NVidia GeForce 6 series card, which they no longer sell off their website I dont think.
Hope I answered your question.
after much debate with myself i finally made the purchase and installed it day really didnt want to shell out the money for it but greed i think made me do it the reason i am here posting today is 1.0 slot 2.0) in pci-e GTX 280 (not not to ask for help but to give some information for others that may need it my motherboard does not have pci-e slot you can see what it is in my specs above in the link it has the pci-e x yes these cards are backwards compatible with this slot as noted on the box and on sites with info about these cards i just wanted to say it runs just fine in my setup with no overclocks on my cpu or my new gtx out of the box dmark score k so if anyone was wondering how it ran when not socketed into a board slot and in the board slot i have to say it runs pretty decent this is running faster while in the slot or should i say better than my GTX 280 in pci-e 1.0 slot (not 2.0) old gts hope this helps anyone that was interested now maybe when i get a few extra bucks ill finished my upgrades so far all ive done is upgraded the memory the psu and the gpu id like to get a new motherboard and cpu to go along with it good day nbsp GTX 280 in pci-e 1.0 slot (not 2.0)
Thx, good post. I can see that sucker with a core 2 duo( hoping you're not an amd fanboy) with 4-8Gbs of ddr2 and a decent Hdd. You'd be set.
My boss has a computer that has a 4x APG slot . I have an 8x graphics card I was going to give him but I'm unsure if it will work not being a hardware guy...
Is there any easy way to tell whether I have an AGP slot for a graphics card?
Compaq Presario 5000

My current graphics card is:
S3 Graphics Prosavage Compaq 8Mb
Thank you for any help.
I am in the market for a new computer and I found a motherboard that I like. It has an ACR slot. What is that?? I have never heard of that kind of expansion slot.
It's another riser for software-driven add-ins like modems or sound. Very similar to AMR or CNR.
The problem with ACR is that it's a VIA proprietary standard. That is, it's VIAs, and you'll never see it on anything but VIA boards, where as Intel has made its CNR standard available to everyone (including VIA).
Because of that, I think that ACR will go the way of Betamax. That is, nowhere. Those slots aren't popular as it is, and when they are used, people will be far more likely to use CNR (because it's an open standard) than ACR.
my new mobo has an ISA slot. It does not line up with any of the knockouts on the back of the panel like the PCI slots do. What are ISA slots used for. IS it old technology?
A Friend Of mine recently brought a $135AUS 3d card only to find he does not have an AGP slot. However on the motherboard there are the pin holes for one and two screw holes to screw one in. Is it possible to install and AGP slot in there?
Can an AGP slot be added?
I've bought a Lenovo ideapad y700 15isk it comes only with a 1tb hdd,no M.2 sdd or the standard sddI've got two questions1- I know that I can replace the 1tb with an ssd but what options do I have and what models are compatible?2- the more important question, what about the m.2 ssd do I have a slot for it in my laptop because I've read in forum that the 1tb hdd model lacks it?a help with a reply would be much appreciated.Thank you in forward.

Base K Memory Failure Hi there This is my first post on TechSpot I hope that I can offer some good advice as well as request it Right now though I am in a spot of bother Today I went to a clients house to fix his computer Everything was fine I just had to install a new ram So ahead I went but the card would not fit so I forced it a little Later I realised I had forced a SDR Ram into A DDR Slot Not good I know Then I took it out so that I was back to the original configuration Now the computer won t even boot onto the A Drive or even get as far as display the BIOS It just keep emitting a beep noise Arrrgggghhhh My questions is would the above result in a fried motherboard or a fried ram card I was going to buy a new DDR tommorrow and hopefully just swap it over but I can t think of any logical reason that the existing one won t work Any or all info on the subject would be appreciated Thanks in advance djdj nbsp
Since you say you forced it into the slot, you might have created small cracks in the mobo which may be the reason for the problem...
Or you might have fried the board as you say.
Either of those will result in a dead board.
But you might be lucky. Try taking out every card, cable & al from the mobo, then reseat the mobo in the case, and try to boot with as few components installed as possible (ie. cpu, vid.card and ram). And try switching the slots the ram is in...
Can someone tell me what this slot is for. It's on the back of my HP nx9010 Laptop
Here is a link to the service manual....you have to download the three parts, one at a time...click on 0 then 1 then 2 ...you end up with 3 rar files...Hope you know what to do with then ...if not google or ask
Pg 79 of the manual mentions something about a mini pci card ...Do you have wireless lan ?? If you don't this is where it would go....
OOPS forgot the link http://fileshare.eshop.bg/download.php?fileid=9133
How can i tell if my agp slot is working or if it burned out. I had my case open and moved my monitor and it pulled my card out of the agp slot and it hasnt worked since . I am now using a ATI Radeon 7000 for now. Is there any kind of test to see if its burned out? Thanks

I have a Latitude E6540. On the right hand side above the CD (half the size and toward the front) a opening that supports some sort of click in, click release accessory. Can someone tell me what that slot is called and what can go in it?
I tried looking around and found items like PCI, WWLAN etc. But when I would look to find things that would go in the slot, they looked nothing like the slot accept.
I'm hoping this can be used for some type of flash card or drive support.
See the tech specs starting on pg 66 of the manual--
hey guy i have a question to, my computer has a space for the apg slot, but no slot. like it says "apg slot" but theres no connector there. is there anything i can do about this? any help would be appritiated.
Hi and welcome to TSG!
I have split your post off into your own thread. In the future if you have a Question/Problem please start a "New Thread". It get's too confusing trying to address two different people's problem in the same thread and you may get overlooked.
Please continue in this thread.
Does anybody know how to physically unlock the multiplier on a slot 1 pentium 3 500mhz? this is my testing system for overclocking.
can't be done, locked internally in the chip. Only adjustment is front side bus setting if your motherboard allows it.
WOW, I guess I need to learn some more about Video Cards..
I'm in dispute, can an Nvidia board, accept ATI cards as long as its the same slot.
Lets say I have GIGABYTE GA-M57SLI-S4 AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI
can I add, this GPU VisionTek 900196 Radeon HD 2400PRO 256MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Video Card
Nvidia and ATI are just the makers of the GPU chipset. Basically Intel and AMD.
If you have PCIe Slot on your motherboard, you should be able to use whatever card you want. I am running an Nvidia GTS450 on my ATI chipset mainboard.
The light under the DVD slot on my pc blinks constantly when the slot is closed. If I open the slot the light goes out. There is nothing in the DVD slot...Can you help?
Does it make a noise as well? Just that it could just be something to do with the drive...not a big problem surely?
Sorry-this isn't really any kind of help but on our main desktop the drives are crazy...but they work so it's not really a problem
Okay I just got my evga geforce 6800 in the mail so I run to my computer and am about to install when I peal a little sticky not of the apg slot that says do not use a 3.3 v agp card in this slot is it okay for my 6800 need help quick I don't know how much longer I can wait.
It should work fine. Only really old agp cards use 3.3v. Newer ones use 0.8v(8x agp), and 1.5v(4x agp).
Hope you like the setup.
what is an AMR Slot and will win 98se recognize a motherboard with one?
AMR is a special modem slot, it takes an AMR Modem. This is a special type of modem which only fits in this type of slot. It is the only type of card the AMR slot uses. Windows will see it.
I'm about to buy the ABIT AT7-MAX2 in order to start playing with overclocking world (and probably caused severe dents in my pocket at the same time as things go overtemp ))
The new mobo has an 8x AGP slot. I have a GF4Ti4600. Am I right to assume that the 8x slot won't make an ounce of difference to the overall performance due to the fact the card was designed with 4x in mind?
Does anyone know if ABIT's allow the locking of the PCI/AGP frequencies?
Anyone know the safezone for a XP2000 processor?
Happy new year!
