No system sounds, volume icon in taskbar, or Internet audio

Q: No system sounds, volume icon in taskbar, or Internet audio

My volume icon in Taskbar disappeared a few days ago, along with sounds of any kind (internet, iTunes, WMP...). A diagnostic from Fix My PC revealed the error: "Windows cannot find C:\Windows\System32\System32.exe" ...I'm not sure if that's part of this problem or not.

There are no yellow! prompts in the Device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers. I haven't identified the virus which likely caused this issue, and I do not have a copy of Windows XP to reinstall as I bought this laptop from my former employer upon leaving the company.

My objective is fix the Sound so it is fully operational again. Any ideas? Please help!

Thank you!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi bge2i. Welcome to TSF.

You could try running the command "sfc /scannow" in a command prompt window, which you can access by going to START>ACCESSORIES>COMMAND PROMPT. Let me know if that helps.

I upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista. Recently, after windows finished installing some updates, I noticed that my Volume icon had disappeared from my taskbar. When I went to restore it, it wouldn't let me select the volume icon to put in my taskbar, the option had been "grayed out" so to speak.

Also, and this is secondary, when I upgraded to Windows 7 I noticed my PC took longer to start up and longer to perform basic functions like opening up my web browser.

Any suggestions on either of these would be great!

This "might" help. I found it in a forum on this site, helped me.

Is there anything pinned currently?

Here is here is where they get stored:

C:\Users\<your user account name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

Drag a program shortcut to this folder, see if it gets pinned.

I have a Dell Inspiron 7720. Since upgrading to Windows 10 I can adjust the volume using the function keys, but not with a mouse as there is no speaker icon in the taskbar.
I have gone through the 'customise notifications area' options, and the volume option is enabled under "turn system icons on or off'. Still, there is no speaker icon showing in the task bar.

The volume icon has returned for me. Is there no way to delete a thread here?

But while I'm here.... I'm still having problems with audio not being as loud. Max volume seems half as loud as it used to be. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi everyone. I had my new desktop with Windows 7 Home 64bit for about 2 weeks now and so far im loving it. The one and only problem im having is the volume icon in the taskbar. I know its been posted several times before (i searched) but non of the solutions fixed my problem.

Sometimes when my Windows boots up, the volume icon is missing from the taskbar. I take a look in "turn system icons on or off" and the Volume, Network and Action Center are greyed out (cant click them.) It does this once every 2 or 3 reboots. The only way to fix it is to reboot. Its not a huge problem but its very annoying having to reboot 2 times.

Any ideas or solutions for my problem?

Welcome to the forums;EN-US;Q319095

If you don't have an xp cd try these

First try : Go into your Control Panel and open Folder Options, under the View tab uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)", click Apply/OK. Now go into Windows Explorer(Not Internet Explorer) and go to C:\Windows\System32\dllcache folder and open it. Locate the sndvol32.exe file right click it,choose copy. Next go to the C:\Windows\System32 folder and open it. In the right pane right click an empty area and choose Paste. Now you should have your volume icon back.

if this doesn't work, then download the exe file from:

On my WinXP SP3 Home Edition laptop, I visit Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Properties and I check the box for Place volume icon in the Taskbar and I uncheck Mute. This of course works properly but whenever I reboot the laptop, these settings are gone and I have to revisit this and repeat the settings.

Is there a way to configure this so it stays as desired across reboots? Thanks.

I run windows xp and i have 2 partitions a (C drive) which is NTFS & a (D drive) which is a FAT32 that I reformatted to a NTFS. After I did this using command prompt I lost data and files on the D drive. Hence I cant find my volume icon in the task bar amongst other things. Ive looked everywhere but to no avail. I keep getting an error message saying that that windows cannot display the vol icon because it is not installed on my computer and to go to the add/delete programs too install it. Also it tells me that windows cannot execute SndVol32.exe and to go to the add/delete programs to install it. Where and how do i fix this. I tried updating the drivers and doing an uninstall/reinstall for the audio program but the vol icon is still missing. I also updated the drivers but no luck. Help

I have a presario 700 laptop running XP. For months now I can't find the volume icon in the taskbar. My dialup starts screeching (I played some music yesterday) and I have to open control panel and then click on the sounds & volume icon, then click mute. To put the icon back in the taskbar I need to uncheck the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" command and APPLY. Then check the command and APPLY again.

How can I put the icon back into taskbar permanently? And why did it leave taskbar in the first place?

When this happens, which is frequently, I go into Control Panel "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" and find that the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" box is still ticked.
I untick it, press OK, tick the box, press OK, and the icon reappears.
Not important, perhaps, but I find it very irritating. Why does this happen, and what can I do to stop it?

Hey everyone, just made this account cause I can't find a permanent solution anywhere.

As the title states, the Volume Icon in the Taskbar is missing on Windows Startup.

Yes, I know I can bring it back by restarting my Explorer.exe and such, still it bugs me to do so on every system restart.

Volume is enabled in Windows Settings (see attachment), still it's only showing after i restart the explorer.exe after every startup. ("Always show all icons in the notification area" is on, obviously)

On "Turn System Icons on or off" on the other hand, its disabled, greyed out even, so I thought somebody might know a regedit fix or something similar to keep it on on startup.

Is there any permanent solution to fix this "bug" ?

Just in case: Soundcard is a Soundblaster Z, other Specs on Profile.

Thanks in advance,

I find System Sounds does not stay at 0 volume or muted, with one exception: when volume mixer is open.

When I close the volume mixer and open a program that requires UAC, the chime is at "full" volume of selected device's volume setting.

As examples, Piriform's CCleaner and Revo's Uninstaller chime and reset the volume to "full" while Auslogics' Disk Defrag does not reset the volume but nevertheless chimes.

Is this a lost cause?

I have a Satelllite L830 10U with Windows 7

I can't see the volumen icon on the taskbar.

I tried to turn it on, but the "show icon /notifications" option does not show any icon, just plain text
and under the system icon tab (volumen, battery, net, ...) the volumen icon is in unselectable grey

Any ideas??
Are Toshiba's and Windows updates interferring somehow??

Its not notebook problem but your system is muddled up.
Check this YouTube video which shows you how to enable this sound icon again:

Its about Vista but should work for Win 7 too

No sound?
No audio volume icon in tray
In sound & devices properties, it says no audio device

A:No audio volume icon in tray

Right click in Task bar, click properties, under notification tab tick volume.HTH.
Have you checked in device manager? If you see any yellow triangle sign, you may have to install the drivers.
You could try a system restore and this seems to be the easiest method.

Basically when I listen to music through foobar winamp any audio player windows sort of regulates my volume / System other lowering automatically my apps volume music Sounds if any other program makes a sound System sound rings Music volume lowers Watching a video on youtube or any other service music volume lowers playing a game Music lowers This problem has persisted through entirely new computers the only thing remaining consistent is my AV receiver different brand video cards as well monitor is hooked into receiver hdmi out and then video card goes into receiver hdmi input so both AMD and Nvidia have done this to me so far I don't recalled if this was an issue before the receiver it's been way too long It was also like this in W and now W I find it weird that this isn't a problem when System Sounds / other apps automatically lowering my music volume I use headphones Only my receiver I've never had this happen with any other component though blu ray player ps xbox etc I've also listened to music on those devices and played a game or w e and it doesn't happen It really seems like a windows issue or driver problem I don't understand how it can't be fixed Usually these are the go to things - The BenQ is the monitor connecting to the receiver other is my headset So I figured I'd ask for help here there's entire articles dedicated to selecting quot Do Nothing quot in the Sound Communications tab to stop this problem Getting tired of reading them Thanks

Normally when I boot there is a volume icon in the taskbar tray that I can click on to control volume, but it's disappeared. I went to sounds and audio devices on the control panel and sure enough it said no audio device. Interestingly, under the hardware tab when I selected the SoundMax Digital Audio, which is the normally used device, it claimed the device was working properly and it was also listed in my device manager. I even disabled and re-enabled it to make sure it was installed and enabled, but it still showed "No audio device" under the first tab (of Sounds and Audio).

Does anyone know how else to install or enable this (or any other) sound device? I should note that I'm listening to music over the Internet as I type this, so I do have sound, just no sound control except for the control within the media player.

On windows 8.1, my taskbar, one day, suddenly stopped displaying the audio icon on the taskbar. When I right click it, go to the properties, and click customize, it doesn't show the audio icon as an option. When I click, "turn system icons on or off," I can see the audio icon, but it is locked to off. I don't know where to look from here.

A:[SOLVED] Not Showing Audio Icon On Taskbar

Method 1:
There is no option available in control panel volume settings to show volume icon like earlier operating system. In Windows 8 and 8.1 you can enable volume icon by modifying ?Turn system icons on or off? option.
Right click on or near time clock in notification area and select Properties.

Make sure Volume icon is set ?On? as shown below, if it were off, make it on to show volume icon.

If the above step hasn?t help, ?Restore default icon behaviors? which may bring back the missing icon.

This is the normal procedure to get back the volume icon. In case the Volume icon option ( on/off) grayed out and you can?t change it, then follow the method 2.

Method 2: If volume icon is missing and you can?t enable it from ?Turn system icons on or off? area, then that could be an issue with explorer process. The following two methods can solve the issue.
a) Kill the explorer.exe from Processes or Details tab under task manager. Find out all explorer.exe and kill them, make sure no explorer.exe is running in the task manager. After that, on the file menu select new process or Run (or new tasks), type ?explorer? and press OK. It will start the new explorer process. That should bring back the volume icon, if it hasn?t, redo the method 1

This method has brought back missing volume icon on my Windows 8.1 computer.
b) Registry modification- Its recommended to take a backup before modifying registry.
Open registry editor in Windows and find out;
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

After modifying registry keys, you need to kill and restart the explorer.exe process to take effect.

I went into my Control Panel to access the audio sliders, and when I checked the box to display the volume control icon on the Taskbar, a text box popped up telling me that I have to install it from my add/remove programs function. Well, I can not find the Volume Control icon function anywhere, including on my original Windows XP Professional installation CD. Can anyone tell me how I can re-install the speaker Volume Control icon on my Taskbar?

Hi, I recently upgraded to windows 7 (from vista) on my HP Pavillion dv9000 series (specifically dv9850ea)

Beforehand when I ran the upgrade advisor, I got a few warning about incompatabilities - the graphics card for example - but all seems fine after the upgrade.

My problem is with the audio - system sounds work fine, audio from youtube for example, works fine... but when I play divx videos (still need to test other formats) there is no audio with either media player or divx player. Also when I play a song on itunes, it will just hang on 00:00 and go no further.

I know its not a driver issue, as some sounds ARE working... but im stumped!

It is probably one of a few things. a driver or codec, or configuration issue.
Just because sound works on some formats doesnt necessarily rule out a driver so I would check in device manager.

Codec--You may need one to plat the respective format, or you may have two codecs conflicting.

Config--something is configured incorrectly like a control panel

Try this one ( Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 Pro | H.264 Encoding | VC-1 Codec | Streaming Silverlight Video | IIS Smooth Streaming | Real Time Encoder | Microsoft® Expression® ). The free version does, however, have a 10 minute recording limit. If you need more time for the recordings, you'll need to buy the Pro edition ($199). But I would first try it out and check whether it does what you need.

I've checked the levels, and checked for conflicts, and nothing seems to be wrong. Aside from the system sounds, known wav files have the same very very low volume.

Using XP SP3, realtek 97. When I use the HRTF demo under the audio configuration, everything sounds fine. Just not sure why if all the levels are good, why things don't work.

Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my creative x-fi software, in the sense that when I bought my computer there was an icon in the system tray that would allow me, amongst other things, to change the mode of my sound i.e. Multimedia, Gaming and Creation. I updated my drivers and software for this and now the icon has gone and it is replaced by the rather dull windows standard one. That only allows me to turn the volume up.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate, but previously I had Vistam and the icon wasn't showing in there after I updated the software. Does anyone have a solution to this? I have looked on the Creative site and cannot find anything to resolve this.

Thanks in advance.

I have a Windows 7 laptop that was working fine yesterday. However, this morning when my daughter turned it on the taskbar suddenly started to look like the XP taskbar. I cannot get it to change back. However, the bigger problem is that the screen brightness is very low and the computer is not detecting the volume or Internet hardware. The controls to change the brightness and volume are not working. It is almost like the computer is in safe mode but it really isn't as I double checked to make sure that it did not accidentially get booted into it. I also ran a virus scan but it did not find anything. Any ideas of what the problem could be and how to fix it? The restore to prior day is also not working as I checked it in case I had to revert to resolve.

I can't fathom out this weird problem, on my Icon in the taskbar for Internet access It has a Red cross at the bottom right corner of the Icon, but my Internet connection works fine, so does my Home Network to my old XP machine and to my Smart TV and Blu Ray player, even to my Mobile phone.

Anybody know why it's got this red x on it please ?

A:Red X on Internet Icon in the Taskbar

Hi Atomic245,

The 'Red cross' Network icon in the 'system tray' indicates a connection that is not being used. Since your PC is connecting fine to the internet, it is likely that you have more than one 'Network connections' available for use. It is also likely that the system is connected to the internet either through 'Ethernet or Wireless'; and the other one is installed/disabled.

Please follow these steps to capture more information:

1. Click 'Start' and type 'ncpa.cpl' (without quotations) in 'Search box' and tap 'Enter' > Capture and share details

2. Click 'devmgmt.msc' (without quotations) in 'Search box' and tap 'Enter' (Device Manager Opens) > Locate and Expand 'Network Adapters' category > Capture details of all 'devices' that are listed underneath (Also check if any of these devices has a question mark/exclamation mark' besides it) > Also check 'Other Devices' category and share details of any device that is listed with a 'mark' besides it.

3. Open Command Prompt and type 'ipconfig /all' (without quotation) and tap 'Enter'. The window will display detailed information about the working of 'network connections' in the system.

For some reason FireFox doesnt want me to use my own icon for it in the taskbar. ill change the icon, pin it to the taskbar, click the new icon and itll open up a new firefox default icon on the taskbar so there will be 2.

anyway around this?

A:FireFox Taskbar Icon, Makes Duplicate Taskbar Icon's

Let's fix the duplicate icon first, open Firefox from the pinned icon you have already after the second one opens up unpin the first one and pin the second one that should stop the duplicate icon.

Now the icon go to C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar then right-click on the Firefox shortcut click on properties make sure you're in the Shortcut tab and click on the Change Icon Button. After you open up Firefox again icon will revert back to the default icon because it opens up Firefox.exe you would have to change the icon in the .exe for a permanent change.

This pc is running xp pro and connected directly to a dsl router. I have two icons in the taskbar - one is 'local area connection' as normal. However the second is labeled 'internet connection'. When i double click on it - the click on properties, "This connection allows you to connect to the internet through a shared connection on another computer".
There is one other in the building connecting to the internet - but theres not meant to be any inter-pc networking going on.

In the meantime - since first discovering the above - when i now click on 'internet connection' it wont display.
Can anyone throw any light on this?

I was uninstalling lots of software,my son's game demos and cleaning up the PC
(I go through such a crisis every some months) when I realized that I don't have anymore
an icon for my internet connection (ADSL) at tray though I'm connected.

"Show icon..." box under my connection's properties
it is checked and no "hide icons" at the taskbar...

I have no way to disconnect ,only to shut down the PC.
When I go to Control Panel-Network Connections and right click
my connection icon some parts of the menu are greyed.

For some reason I didn't have System restore points for more
than two days and I can't fix it this way...
Any ideas ?
(Any registry keys involved?)

New user of Windows 7 here. I have the Internet Explorer icon pinned to my taskbar. However, when I click on the IE icon, it changes from an icon to a bar representing the IE window that has opened. I'm wanting to keep the single icon on the taskbar, even when IE is open, like you were able to in XP. Any suggestions?

I downloaded an app that helps in replacing icons. everything went fine except for the windows explorer system folder icon (i think its called as that)

Here is a pic to help you guys:

I know this has something to do with a registry error? Quesiton is, how do i revert that back to the default icon or if not revert, at least replace it with a new one.
If any of you guys out there can help me, it would be very awesome!
Thanks in advance!

Hello Tommy,

Check to see if you are able to set the "Network" and "Volume" system icons to show (checked) as per the tutorial below.
Notification Icons - Customize

If they are grayed out, then see if you may be able to enable them using the tutorial below.

Notification Area - System Icons

If still not, then please post a screenshot showing the settings for this to see if it may reveal what the issue is.

Hope this helps for now,

Hello I'm using Win bit Recently over the past week or change connectivity Internet in taskbar icon No drops; so I've noticed that the internet connectivity will drop after a little while It can be m or perhaps an hour After this a reboot is required to reconnect The strange part about this is that the icon in the corner that tells you your network connectivity status stays at bars rather than the familiar bars with a caution sign as if there isn't an issue Some tests I've tried after this happened before a reboot ping google Internet connectivity drops; No change in taskbar icon com in cmd RESULT Strangely I receive ping packets back from google which may explain why the status in the corner stays the same telnet to google com on port Internet connectivity drops; No change in taskbar icon and send Internet connectivity drops; No change in taskbar icon a request RESULT telnet acts strangely Characters appear black on black and thus are unreadable I was unable to send an HTTP request to google and thus the result is inconclusive Check facebook notifications in chome RESULT Oddly enough I can receive notifications but I cannot reply nor click on a new link to open the notification After the connection quot drops quot you will not be able to use chrome nor firefox to access the internet Both browsers will send requests that never return packets from the host One guess I have is that the connectivity does not drop completely but drops to a pace that is so slow little information can be loaded My initial response to this was quot I have a virus quot I downloaded AVG ran a scan it found a few viruses removed them from the computer rebooted did another scan and it came up clean The problem still persists What disturbs me is that one of the viruses found on my computer ended up to be a quot patching virus quot a virus that will bind itself to other executables and windows dll files slowly taking down the target computer If this network problem can be attributed to this virus that has been removed then what should my next action be Assuming the virus is not the issue what should my next course of action be What are some good network monitoring tools that can monitor speed and packets sent and received I would like to get rid of this problem as it's an irritating hindrance to my work Thanks Dragos

A:Internet connectivity drops; No change in taskbar icon

It sounds like either TCP/IP network stack or winsock is messed up which is a fairly typical problem but virus problems can look like many things.

If it's a virus problem run more scans.

You should also run malwarebytes to check for more virus's .

Windows security essentials is also worth using.

If you did have a virus it may have messed up the network stack or winsock.

Winsock entries tells Windows 7 how to access your network services. Additionally, your TCP/IP protocol can be corrupted. The TCP/IP protocol is a stack of 4 layers that includes several transport layers, but when this stack is corrupt you will constantly have connectivity issues.

Type or copy each command one at a time into an elevated command prompt then hit "enter" after each one, then reboot your machine.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

If it's something on the wireless side then you should install Xirrus wifi inspector. A screen shot of this will show me the wireless landscape in your area and adjustments can be made from there.

I asked the one connected internet on Not Icon taskbar ( Vista ) Globe this question on the Microsoft Community with no answers apart from thinking I meant the small globe on the Internet connected icon hence Globe Icon on Vista taskbar ( Not the internet connected one ) the bracketed part on the title About two months ago a full size Globe Icon started to appear on my taskbar regularly every day If I hover over it nothing is displayed If I left click on it or double tap nothing happens If I right click on it a small box appears with the only option of 'quit' which if you click it disappears If I right click on the taskbar when the Globe Icon was on the taskbar and click 'properties' then 'notification area' and then 'customise' Very briefly at the top of the 'current items' list was the globe icon with 'no title' alongside it It then disappeared from the list at the same time as disappearing from the taskbar I know it's not a brilliant photo but I have attached one if it's any help I have Vista Home Premium bit I have scanned with both AVG Free and and no threats found and the globe still appears Anyone help please

Hey, guys.

I've been having that problem for a while now, but I could always just system restore back to a previous state and my sound comes back. But now, it seems that when I tried to do a system restore, one wasn't available.

I've done everything that I've searched on, like disabling/enabling sound card, uninstalling and installing again. None of those seems to work.

Since my system restore sets it back before an update is installed, then I think it's because of an update. And the most recent update since the Red X was an update for windows defender, and I can't uninstall the update, or whatnot.

I'm getting really desperate here, guys. Please help.

Thanks in advance.

I run Windows 7 Home Premium x64.
The sound card is Conexant SmartAudio HD.

A:Red X on Volume Icon, "No Audio Output Device is installed."

If it's a Windows Update you should be able to uninstall it, at least if you remember what number it was exactly. "Control Panel" > "Programs and Features" then at the top left click on "View installed updates", the updates you installed, at least via Windows Update, should now be viewable. Then find which one it was and uninstall it, should be easy enough.

So Windows isn't acknowledging your sound card in "Device Manager"? If not go to Conexant's website and search under "Audio Solutions" or google for any drivers that may suit your exact product. If it is acknowledging your card. . .I don't know. If it's not onboard then it wouldn't be able to be disabled in your BIOS, unless you have an onboard sound AND a sound card, and they're conflicting? If so you might have to disable the onboard audio perhaps?

Hi all I currently have a VirtualBox VM virtual machine of Windows Professional volume in system-wide Windows to 7? Software increase audio running on a host Windows Ultimate both -bit I am in a situation where I am finding the audio output from my VM is simply too low in volume even with the VM Windows's volume set to maximum at While a simple answer would be to increase my host Windows's volume further Software to increase system-wide audio volume in Windows 7? it's at and or just crank up the volume on my speakers this skews with the host system's volume where I have set everything perfectly where I want it So I am looking for a software-based alternative that can boost the volume of Windows's audio in the OS itself inside the VM Googling has only brought up the quot answer quot of turning on Loudness Equalization which is inadequate for my needs as it introduces audio distortion and is not the exact answer to my problem at any rate While I will have to resort to the Loudness Equalisation thing if all else fails I'm looking for something with a more refined approach Does anyone know of a piece of software driver that can for example serve as an equalizer or in-between filter that sits directly in Windows 's audio subsystem not unlike Realtek's equalizer on their HD Audio drivers For reference the VirtualBox VM is emulating an Intel HD Audio sound card chip This can be changed to AC' or Soundblaster if required This is also a virtualized environment if it wasn't clear already so any concerns of blown speakers and hardware are not applicable short of something completely ridiculous Thanks to everyone for reading and hopefully someone can enlighten me

As stated in the title, the Network icon on the taskbar in the bottom right, always shows the disconnected Ethernet, even while I am connected to wifi. I've also tried connecting it via the Ethernet port, and it still shows the disconnected Ethernet icon. Also, not sure if this is related or not, but at every boot, windows tries to install an unidentified-unnamed device. I will post screenshots of the problems.

Here's the screenshots.

I'm working on a rebuild of an old Dell. I disabled the onboard sound, and installed several different PCI sound cards. The system is not my main system, but a spare. It's a 32-bit processor, but has Win7 Pro 64 OS.

The onboard sound adapter is so old, I could not get 64-bit drivers from Dell, so I disabled it and bought a couple of PCI sound cards. The drivers installed properly, but I can not get sound from internet, such as YouTube, Pandora no matter which sound adapter is used. This is true in either FireFox or IE9.

But I **DO** get sound from system events such as opening or closing Windows, beeps, errors, etc. **AND** I can play MP3 files from my HD through WMP.

I have downloaded the latest Flash player from Adobe, but I'm not sure if it was 32-bit or 64-bit Flash Player. Would this matter?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:No sound from internet, but have system sounds

There is no possible way you can install a 64-bit OS onto a 32-bit Processor. It won't work. Period. End of Story.
Either you have a 64-bit processor, or your confused as to which version of Windows 7 you have.

Goto Control Panel -> System. Under "System Type" it will say either 32-bit or 64-bit OS.

Try some of these first:

Do me a favor in Firefox too - goto Tools -> Addons -> Plugins.
Tell me if Flash is listed in there and what it says.

My laptop has been acting funny for the last week. I used it fine on sunday (although there was this annoying google redirect). Then on monday when I logged on, weird grey taskbar, no audio (says something about 'no mixer device' and no internet conection (i am sending this msg from my phone). I did an ipconfig and it says I have no internet address. I have tried running spybot and mbam but it doesnt help.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I have an HP f2105 21" monitor running on Windows 7 x64. Recently the Volume Icon keeps appearing on my screen, and automatically increases the volume to 100%. I have not made any significant changes in my operating system. The Icon stands in front of all other screens and cannot be dismissed. It quits when it's ready after a few seconds. It pops up every 3-4 minutes or so. My drivers are up to date. I've tried disconnecting the monitor and reconnecting it. Turning it off and on, etc. So far nothing has helped.

Hello melb1946Does your keyboard have volume buttons? I know in my experiences I have sometimes run into similar scenarios. In my case the problem was accidentally hitting the volume button on my keyboard. How is your sound setup in Windows 7? Is your monitor set as the default sound device? Do other sound devices increase their volumes?Probably one of the best ways to isolate the problem would be to put the monitor on another computer and see if the sound continues to appear and go up.

Maybe you guys have seen a topic title like this before but as one of the posts here said that " it's never a good idea to follow a fix for someone else PC as certain things can be different and Crash." the last file i downloaded last night was a subtitle file for a movie.. then the next morning this happens.. most people recommended to reformat but i wanted that to be my last resort.. btw i tried "system restore" and it doesn't work.. atm im doing a system scan using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and im gonna post the log as soon as its finished....many thanks in advance for those who will help! :D

I don't seem to be getting audio when using my internet browser. I have tried internet explorer, google chrome and firefox and they are all the same, no audio.. Eg: on you tube i get video but no sound. Also windows system sounds are not working either. ( They are set at default ) Windows media player seems to be working fine though, plays mp3, mp4 etc perfectly and skype is working too.
I have checked master volume control panel and nothing is muted and all levels are set properly. Also checked realtek hd sound manager and no probs there either.
I have run out of ideas now and any that you may have will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks !

You can go to Kelly Korner and lookfor a fix to the system sounds . Kelly's Korner has fixed many items for me that where missing from my O/S . For instance the chevron arrows on the right side of my taskbar and the speaker icon and remove hardware safley icons where also missing . No matter how many times I tried to reconfigure my taskbar thru the control panel and several reboots still no joy ? Kelly's Korner had registry fixes for everything and I was able to get everything back ! Check it out, cant hurt to look and its 100% free !

Hello to whomever responds to this thread This is the first time I ve used one of these help forums and my knowledge of computer lingo is limited but I d be greatful if you could help me with this problem A little while ago I downloaded an application which turned out to be a trojan or so I believe Upon opening it I received an error report and my antivirus program Symantec informed me that several items with trojan in their name had been detected and deleted I was also advised Icon Internet Explorer Tray System Protect System Live And Error In Report to reboot my computer System Live Protect Icon In System Tray And Internet Explorer Error Report and after doing so I became aware of a little red shield icon in my system tray Clicking it brings up a question which reads quot Would you like to update your security software and download System Live Protect quot I have not clicked yes because I believe this may be a problem Furthermore whenever I open Internet Explorer there is an error report quot Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close quot I am unsure as to whether these two problems are related but that is my suspicion Is there anything that can be done Thanks for reading

I just looked around on the web and there are a lot of folks with this problem but no answer. Use the programs below and let's see what they find. It is definitely something you don't want.Install Super Antispyware. Run it in safe mode. Allow it to quarantine whatever it finds. the online scan for Bit Defender in normal mode. Allow it to quarantine whatever it finds. a Hijack This log in the Hijack This Forum by following the directions in the link below if the programs above have not removed ALL malware. Yesterday I had my volume control. Today it is gone. I didn't do anything, no updates, no cleaners or anything.
