Can't connect to my Ventrilo server since installing anti-virus software.

Q: Can't connect to my Ventrilo server since installing anti-virus software.

I'm fairly computer literate with most things but when it comes to ports, and routers, and firewalls i'm pretty much a noob.

My friends and I have been using Ventrilo for a few weeks with me running the server from my computer. A few days ago i had to put norton antivirus on my computer to get ride of a virus. Ever since then i can't connect to my Ventrilo server and neither can anyone else. I uninstalled it and everything but it must have changed one of my windows network settings. The windows firewall isn't up but something is blocking stuff. Anyone have any idea how to make stuff like that work again? Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Can't connect to my Ventrilo server since installing anti-virus software.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey guys.

I am currently in safe mode and have downloaded several antivirus scanners such as malware bytes and superanti-spyware and have transfered them over from my laptop to my infected computer with a flash drive. I cant seem to get any of the programs to open and I sometimes get the message "The system administrator has set policies that prevent the installation of this file".

Any help/advice is more than welcome. Please ask questions.

Hello Anthony R,I see that you have an HJT log posted here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/181130/do-i-have-a-virus/We do not allow more than one topic for the same computer and the same issue as this causes confusion, and in this case may make the disinfection process more difficult. This leaves you with a choice:1) Have this thread reopened and the HiJack This log topic deletedOR2) Keep this thread closed and wait for assistance in the HiJack This log forum. Please note that that forum is VERY busy. Please send a Private Message indicating your choice.Assuming you wish assistance in the HiJack This forum, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. If after 5 days you still have received no response, then post a link to your HJT log in the thread titled "Haven't Had A Reply In Five Days?".To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic. Good luck with your log.Orange Blossom

I currently have Norton Anti-Virus 2005 on my computer, as well as their firewall, and I have just downloaded Avast, and the Comodo Firewall Pro 2.4. Before I install both of these, should I delete the Norton?
I just wanted to double check first, before I did anything.
Thanks.......

Hi

I just bought my first ever smartphone (yes, I've been living under a rock) - the iphone 5s. I'm after recommendations for good software to protect it, free if possible.

I've looked in the itunes store and the options for anti-virus seem limited. The Mcafee app gets bad reviews and the others I've never heard of, and/or have no reviews. any suggestions would be great.

On the anti-malware front, i can't seem to find anything in itunes store when i try to search. I like the Malwarebytes anti-Malware program for my laptop, but unless I'm mistaken the only mobile app they have is for Androids, not iphones. Again, any recommendations would be much appreciated.

This novice appreciates your time and ideas...

A:Good anti-virus and anti-malware software for iphone 5s

The reason they have more anti-virus apps for Android is because the Android platform is more vulnerable to malware. On Android, you are able to download and install a variety of things from unknown sources.

For the iPhone, however, anti-virus isn't really needed unless you have jailbroken your device.

Hope this helped.

Hi folks I just installed win 8.1 and I'm wondering if I really really need antivirus and anti spam software. With win 7 I had eset smart security 5 and it worked well but I'm wondering if win 8.1's firewall and defender software is enough to keep me as well protected as eset's smart security 5 software.

I'm a regular guy who checks email, goes on various forums, surfs porn and downloads movies and games.

Would windows defender and firewall be enough to protect me?

I use Ventrilo for raids in wow but recently while trying to connect it auto disconnects and does a countdown then trys to reconnect, this happens over and over again.

I have checked the Vent FAQ which says i might be banned, I have checked with the administrater who says i'm not and i get the same thing happening in any vent channels i use for vairious guilds.

I'm using Vista 32bit, if thats any help

Anybody got any suggestions, I have all the right info in (IP address..password etc) the message says (Server is available. press connect) but when i do the same thing happens.

Thanks in advance

A:Solved: Ventrilo won't connect get a countdown and auto connect.

Well, I'd start by double checking that all your vent info info is correct, port # and password. If you have another machine, try connecting on that to see if its a local problem. There could be a population cap on your vent server, I'd ask the admin that.

If you can connect on the other machine, then I'd try reinstalling vent on your main machine, I've had file corruptions before that gave me the same issue.

I use Avast! Antivirus and reccomend it to friends/family. It has a free eddition you can download and trial if you're unsure. You can get a free yearly subscription which is easy to renew when needed. I have never had a problem with Avast and think it might be a good starting point.

Which Is the Best Free Anti-Virus Software? Other Security Software?

Win7 x64

Which is the best free-for-home-users anti-virus software?

What other free-for-home-users security software do you recommend using in conjunction with Windows 7 x64 these days?

If I'm not mistaken, this version of Windows has a built in Firewall. Does that make Zone Alarm redundant or problematic?

A:Which Is the Best Free Anti-Virus Software? Other Security Software?

Visit the System Security board - this has been asked and answered quite a few times.

Hi there,

I recently changed by MOBO & reformatted my harddrive and since then everytime I install antispyware software I get an error & the program shutsdown.

The programs I tried are

AD-aware
Spybot - S&D
Spyware Doctor

Everytime I try to run a scan I get a msg the pops up saying:

Windows-pls enter disk, with the choices of cancel, try again & continue.

Pressing any of the options just makes the pop-up close & then pop right back up.

BTW I also have SpywareBlaster which doesn't give such problems & I have Kaspersky as an AV.

Can anyone explain what is going on & how I can fix it; if possible!

Thanks in advance!

I want to install Office XP on my server for use by my users (Corporate Environment). I only want to install XP one time with all the drivers, and settings the same....in other words I want to create an image of the completed install on my server so that each user can install the software at their station without needing the CD or the product key....is this possible and can anyone help me?

Thanks...Ken

It is not hard as long as you have the Corporate version of Office XP.

Just follow these steps, and you should be fine.

I'm trying to host my own free vent. I have a router Dynex model- dx-e402. Ive been trying to set it up in many different ways. I opened the port and set up a static ip but it still did not work. I tried using dyndns.org for it but the best i could do was to logging to it myself even though it took a good 2 minutes for the logging but even so no one else was able to logging. After that didnt work I tried enabling DMZ with my static ip and even though its enabled the best i could do was again logging myself after a good 2 minutes but no one else could. I dont know what im doing wrong... Ive followed a bunch of different guides to the T and nothing.

Hey ppls

ive been trying to get my vent server up and running and have it working but no one else can seem to join but i can.
it is also odd because i am using the basic ip of my router not the ip that u say lookup on google with whats my ip...
ive port forwarded the nessasary ports and also made a no-ip address for the server and i have it but that didnt seem to work either, i have also tried adding the port to the exceptions list on windows firewall as a UDP port but that didnt do anything either..now im just stuck outta things to try

id appreciate any help and ill get back to you later got work for now
thanks.

I can't reproduce your issue because it doesn't stop my PC from booting BUT I think I've got a solution for you since you said you "...HAVE HAD SNOOP FREE BEFORE JUST FINE..."

I recommend that you download the VERSION that worked for you in the past. How? You can do that by clicking here and going to the approximate year and month you got a working version of Snoop Free from its web site then downloading and installing that version.

I personally tried opening a snapshot of the site from November 21, 2002 and was able to download a working installer of Snoop Free.

mediamonkey corrupted my ipod (again) so i installed itunes to restore it. i've not used it on windows 7 before.

i'm online, but i get an error that says itunes cannot connect to the ipod software update server.

apple says to do this:

iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPod or iPhone software update server

is there an equivalent action in windows 7? what exactly does this do to solve the problem?

(i'm on a wireless connection...)

thanks!

So lately I've been trying to set up a vent server for my friends and all, but I've seen to come into complications. I've port forwarded the ports on my router and firewall (or at least I think I did...) And no one can still connect, I can connect through my internal IP, but I can't connect through my external IP to test it. The message would just be Contacting server. Can anyone help me here? It's really getting to me

ERROR: Unable to bind to TCP socket

I am behind a router and have accessed my router settings.I checked out the port forwarding and thought I had done things right but looks like i did not.Is this TCP error due to a setting with my router?I also heard that since i am behind a router i have to set up a static IP which i tried but i am unable to connect to the internet that way.Im sure im doing a few things wrong.maybe someone can lead me in the right direction.Im using a Linksys cable/dsl 4 port router.

A:trying to start ventrilo server

Correct me if I'm wrong. I don't have much experience with Ventrillo servers. But don't you need a VOIP router for that. Also, you can't just set up a static IP. The static IP needs to be provided to you by your ISP.

Hi everyone..

I have recently set up my Ubuntu 11.04 server on a p4,
It stores files for my gaming pc, downloads and backs up.
I can also remote to the sever using samba and Tight VNC. (i hear freeNX us better not as painfully slow...)

I was wondering if its possible to have the server act as my anti virus too??

Any input is much appreciated,
Neb.

Hi,
I'm trying to set up a Ventrilo voice chat server to use while gaming online. The only problem, is the default setup is for use with a direct IP address and I'm behind a router. The Ventrilo FAQ mentioned forwarding, but I haven't figured that out quite yet. Any suggestion or help is welcome. Thanks guys.

My son uses Ventrilo for online gaming, however, there is one server I would like to block his access to because it's a bit..."mature" for him. I have the IP address of the server as well as the port, I wonder if it would be possible to block it via the router, or the firewall running on his PC. The router is a Linksys and the current firewall is ZoneAlarm. I wouldn't be against changing to another firewall if that is necessary.

A:How to Block Access to Ventrilo Server

If you are running windows xp, you can:

Open the folder windows\system32\drivers\etc
Open the "Hosts" file using notepad
There should already be an entry of "127.0.0.1 localhost" in there
Just type in "<ip address of vent server> localhost" (without quotes)
If you have the dns address of the server then type "127.0.0.1 <server name>" (again without quotes)

This will prevent his computer from accessing that server.

I have recentley gotten the talking program, Ventrilo and I can sign on to other peoples servers BUT when i make mine, i can get on it, but noone else can sign on to it. My friend said it might have something to do with my router, he said it might have a built in firewall or something. I just wanna be able to make a working server for my friends and myself...

Okay... I LOVE computers. But I am a complete NOOB at networking!! I have a verizon router (FiOS), I am trying to host a ventrilo server for my friends and I off of my computer, which will also be connecting to that server. However I have no idea how to open/allow/forward/whatever i have to do to the ports. It uses port 3784. I want to set it up so I can connect to my server from the same pc it is running from, and have other people connect to it too.

(just figured out how to connect to my own, now I just need other people to be able to connect.)

NEVER MIND I GOT IT TO WORK

Well done there

A:Virus Preventing Anti-Virus Software and System Restore

bump >_>Hello KBM,While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large, as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Athough our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, you wouldn't want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it, would you?We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. The reason we ask this or do not respond to your requests is because that would remove you from the active queue that Techs and Staff have access to. The malware staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response, there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. That is why I have made an edit to your last post, instead of a reply. Please do not multiple post here, as that only pushes you further down the queue and causes confusion to the staff. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible.Thank you for understanding.Regards,The weatherman (Moderator)

A:Browser Redirect Virus - not detected by anti-virus software

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer. NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions. These are the programs I would like you to run next, if you have any problems with these just skip it and run the next one.-Security Check-Download Security Check by screen317 from here.Save it to your Desktop.Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.-AdwCleaner-Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.Click on Delete.Confirm each time with Ok.Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart. Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer. You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.--RogueKiller-- Download & SAVE to your Desktop RogueKiller or from here
Quit all programs that you may have started. Please disconnect any USB or external drives from the computer before you run this scan! For Vista or Windows 7, right-click and select "Run as Administrator to start"For Windows XP, double-click to start. Wait until Prescan has finished ... Then Click on "Scan" button Wait until the Status box shows "Scan Finished"click on "delete" Wait until the Status box shows "Deleting Finished" Click on "Report" and copy/paste the content of the Notepad into your next reply. The log should be found in RKreport[1].txt on your DesktopExit/Close RogueKiller+Gringo

A:Possible Virus. Anti virus software not functioning. Mysterious XCP file

I don't have a complete solution, just some thoughts that might help for now.
Whatever antivirus program you use, make sure it is always up to date. Some people purchase norton or mcaffee, or they get it with their computer purchase... then, the license runs out and they just use it without it being updated. I don't know if that's your situation at all but, figured it was worth mentioning.
IF you're ever stuck with an outdated AV program, there are free ones you can use instead.
If Norton is still licensed, see if you can run an update.

I'd also suggest Malwarebytes if you don't use that already. Download the free version, install it, update it, then run a scan. In most cases, a quick scan is sufficient. I'd start with that. If Norton has been running funny, chances are you will find something malwarebytes would like to remove for you.

Lastly... if this windows update is legit, and it's constantly doing this... I would guess that the update is failing ever time. What I'd suggest is making sure your AV is up to date, running malwarebytes, and then if that helps, do the windows update manually... You can poke around and see the update history and maybe you'll find the one that's failing.
sometimes updating manually will help you find updates you didn't even know were available and find the ones that might be causing trouble. Keeping windows up to date is important. Sometimes an update will make a big difference when things aren't working right.

I hope you get something figured out.

I recently installed win2000 advanced server service pack3. I have been having problems finding an antivirus program supported by this OS. I have tried Norton2002 (which i used on 2000 pro) and McAfee 6.0 Pro. Both programs gave me an error that it was not compatible. Any recommendations on which Antivirus I should use with 2000 advanced server?

Thanx

Anyone know of a free anti-virus program for Win2K3 server? I'm using AVG for XP, Avast for Vista, but need something for server.

Don't want to spend money for something like Symantec, since this is all testing, and won't stick around too long anyway.

I have Chrome 16.0.912.75 (Official Build 116452) m, and I have a problem. When I use the Web Store to install extensions, it installs them, but they don't work. For example, I installed the Adblock extension, and when I tried going to google.com, it wouldn't load. No error page or anything. I tried uninstalling it and installed Adblock Plus. Same thing! Also, with extensions I know there should be menus when you click on the icon in the address bar, something just flashes and closes! Help!

Alright, so I recently got a new laptop from my grandma, but she never used it, so she gave it to me. In the process of deleting some of her old files, I think I might have accidentally deleted a crucial file. Now, when installing Ventrilo, I get this error:

(Vicki is the old profile name, which I changed)

I think that I am currently running Service Pack 1, but I really don't know. I'm not extremely computer literate

Any and all help would be much appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to look over this topic.

My desktop computer contracted a virus and it s unlike one I ve ever dealt with It seems to be affecting the computer in two ways When I use Internet Explorer and search Google for something and click on a link it re-directs to a different website -- usually one about some sort of anti-virus software It doesn t seem to be affecting Firefox at all though Searches and links are just fine there It prevents any Scans Software Anti-Virus Virus Preventing currently installed anti-virus software from running a scan or any new anti-virus software or anti-spyware software from installing I had Norton installed and when I tried to run a scan it would look like it was running a scan but nothing happened I tried installing other anti-virus software after un-installing Norton and running anti-virus scans on the internet like Trendmicro and nothing worked It either sat idle like Norton did or it causes the computer to go to a blue screen and then shut down I ve perused various forums for a solution and most of the solutions involve running some sort of anti-virus or anti-spyware program or programs like HijackThis and none of these will run on my infected computer I also tried to restore the system back to Virus Preventing Anti-Virus Software Scans factory settings but it seems as though the system recovery partition doesn t exist or has been disabled by the virus I m not exactly sure because I just got the computer recently and I guess I never paid much attention as to whether or not there was a recovery partition I m getting recovery discs mailed to me by the manufacturer so if all else fails I can try that but I figured I d post here as a last resort in hopes of getting rid of this virus Any help is appreciated Kris ETA I forgot to add that I am running Windows Vista

Basically earlier today I was happily surfin I anti-virus have I know virus, my (rubbish) but software disagrees. a the web when my computer siezed up for a few seconds A little while afterwards my computer started to tell me it was infected and begged me to perform a security scan with some suspect looking anti-virus software that I have never heard of I can now longer open any program or application without a message telling me said program or application is infected and telling me to perform a scan with the aforementioned anti-virus software Being the expert computer hacker that I am I turned the computer off and on again to find I can no longer get on any website other than surprise the anti-virus software website All other websites will apparently quot harm my computer quot I can also no longer access my existing anti-virus software Luckily all this trouble and strife was confined to my own user I know I have a virus, but my (rubbish) anti-virus software disagrees. I am currently using my parents user Now I have a confession to make Being from a frugal family in times of economic recession our anti-virus software is quot Microsoft Security Essentials quot which we use as it is free I performed a full scan using Security Essentials which detected several threats and dealt with them swiftly as it has in the past Thinking all my problems were over I went back on to my user to find that nothing had changed I was still basically unable to do anything the problem remained It was this that made me suspect that quot Microsoft Security Essentials quot might not be the best anti-virus software in the world After performing another full scan it maintained that everything was fine and dandy when I was quite sure some kind of virus was attacking my computer Basically is there an easy solution I would love if one of you lovely folk comes along and gives me one Or is it time to back up all my photos music files etc and abandon ship I would sincerely love to not have to fork out fifty quid for Norton or McAfee This horribly infected and diseased computer is an eMachines laptop with a Windows Vista operating system Any help greatly appreciated

Most antivirus software has problems with ths sort of malware whether free or paid. There may be a removal guide that can help if you recall the name of the rogue AV popup.

Hi,

This is my first time posting to the forum. I am not that knowledgeable with computers, but can follow basic instructions.

My laptop is acting funny--I think I have a virus. However, I am unable to run any anti-malware or anti-virus software. I try to run McAfee and I get an error immediately, "an unexpected problem occurred during your scan". I also tried to run Malwarebytes and though the quick scan found nothing, the full scan froze shortly after I started it. I tried to download AGV and MyTurboPC and my computer froze before completing the downloads.

Any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Katie

A:virus won't let me run anti virus software, hijacks my browser

Hello and welcome to TSF.

We want all our members to perform the steps outlined in the link given below, before posting for assistance. There's a sticky at the top of this forum, and a
Quote:

Having problems with spyware and pop-ups? First Steps

link at the top of each page.

Please follow our pre-posting process outlined here:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f50/...lp-305963.html

After running through all the steps, you shall have a proper set of logs. Please post them in a new topic, as this one shall be closed.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

==========

It's likely that the infection may prevent our tools from running. The following tool will help running them.

If you have an active internet connection, copy/paste the links below into your browser, don't click them or the rogue might redirect. If you don't have an active internet connection, download the tools from another machine, and transfer them to the affected machine via USB flash drive.

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)

There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one. You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.com
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.scr
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.pif

Note: You will likely see a message from this rogue telling you the file is infected. Ignore the message. Leave the message OPEN, do not close the message. Run rkill repeatedly until it's able to do it's job. This may take a few tries. You'll be able to tell rkill has done it's job when your desktop (explorer.exe) cycles off and then on again.

At this point, you should now be able to run analysis tools.

Once the tool has run, do NOT reboot the machine, and then try once again to run DDS and GMER as instructed in our First Steps and post them in a new thread as this one shall be closed to put you back in the queue.

If for some reason the machine reboots, repeat the process. Again, try not to restart the machine.

Ok, this one is doing my head in, I have been trying to install the free edition of AVG Anti Virus, I click on setup and i get the following message:

"This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package"

Boring. What am I supposed to do?

I am running Windows XP Home by the way.

Thanks in Advance.

I downloaded and installed the Avast Windows Server antivirus program and installed Anti Windows AVAST Server virus it The server that I installed the software on had a production database syncronization process which keeps a legacy PSQL database in sync with MS SQL Server The synchronization process uses a combination of executable programs the windows task scheduler and the SQL Server agent As soon AVAST Windows Server Anti virus as the antivirus software came up it deleted every executable that the task scheduler ran and it deleted the jobs in the task scheduler that started the executables So the default AVAST assumption is that programs getting executed and the task scheduler executing tasks are viruses I should have just installed a virus When we realized what was happening we stopped the realtime virus monitoring We were able to recover the executables from their vault but the jobs and their schedules are deleted without notification and without being saved So there was nothing to recover A call to Avast support was HIDEOUS I had an agent who simply re-read the AVAST support policies after each question I asked The bottom line was go to the website Type in your question and they will get back to you in hours This is going to take hours to get sorted out If you are looking for a single server antivirus solution my recommendation is ANYBODY ELSE BUT AVAST

My company is using FortiClient (installed before my time here) and I HATE it. I want to give some recommendations to my boss who is the IT Director. I seem to be going towards Kaspersky but wondered what other's feel is good / great.Edit: Moved topic from All Other Applications to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

A:Server Anti-Virus Protection Recommendations

What do you think your boss wants of an AV product?
And why are you going towards Kaspersky?

I'm asking because selecting an AV for a server is very different than selecting an AV for a home user.

How many servers do you have? Do you need centralized management of the AV?
Are these "real" servers, or do people also log on to them and use them as a workstation?
Are the servers mission critical?

These are some questions you should ask yourself.

Hi peeps,
I'm having problems with my anti virus program, PC-Cillin 2002.
It had been working ok until about 2 weeks ago, when about once or twice a day, I would get an erro message, saying;

"the pc-cillin server timed out"

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but now I get the error message as soon as I try to do an update or run a virus scan.

Can anyone help me sort the problem out, or should I just download trustworthy AVG.

Gill

A:Anti virus server response timed out!!!!

I would certainly recommend downloading AVG - it would pay to use it at the very least until you can rectify the problem you're having with your existing software.

My site is currently running multiple servers interconnected into each other. Recently got attacked by some silly virus so I look forward to the gurus' advice here.

1)Whats a good freeware antivirus program to use for a server?
2)On the other hand, whats a good antivirus program to buy?
3)Any more programs that i should look out for to boost the security for my servers.

PS: By the way i am using VNC very often to access PCs at different locations at once so hopefully it doesnt disturbs that flow that much.

Thanks!

My anti-virus software has just recently expired (I have McAfee Virus Scan) and I am looking around for a new anti-virus program. I wouldn't mind getting McAfee again, I was just wondering if there is something better out there. If there is something free that can work also, that would be great, but I know that those programs don't have as much protection as the full suits would. So is there an anti-virus software that is better than the others?

Thanks, Lina

My dad just got a new computer and we are trying to set him up with some anti-virus software. Norton is a resource hog so i won't even let him entertain that idea. I told him to get AVG for spyware as i have had great luck with it, but i am not sure for anti-virus. What do you guys recommend?

Hello,

I trust the suggestions and insight from this site, you guys have helped me in the past so I thought I'd ask for your advice once again. In your professional opinion what is the best anti-virus software available? I recently purchased a new computer and I need a good anti-virus software, I have read reviews and blogs and I have been considering purchasing Kaspersky 7.0. However during my research I kept running into reviews from users complaining about ISwift installing files that aren't deletable and that these files have left the system damaged after you uninstall the software. I have also considered purchasing Norton's anti-virus software but their reviews weren't all that favorable.

So I thought I'd ask here.

I'm running 8.1 and my computer repair guy said I didn't need virus protection because it was built right into 8.1. Is this true?

A:Do I need Anti Virus Software?

Windows Defender is built into Windows 8.1. Getting another AV program, such as Avast as an example, is a matter of choice.

I'm looking for the best anti-virus software. I would like it to come with all kinds of protection. Such as, real-time virus alerts, spyware removal, personal firewall, and whatever else that I might need. I would like to have full control of the firewall, being able to shut it down when I want to. What are your recomendations?

No long, drawn out story; just one question. What is the best, or top three-five ranking, Anti-Virus software right now on the market. I don't care if they cost a few hundred dollars, I'd just like to know there names and I'll research the rest myself. -Thanks

Hello,Choosing a security toolkit with anti-virus, firewall and anti-malware programs is a matter of personal preference, your technical ability and experience, features offered, the amount of resources utilized, how it may affect system performance and what will work best for your system. Other factors to consider include effectiveness, user friendliness, ease of updating, ease of installation and removal. A particular combination that works well for one person may not work as well for another. There is no universal "one size fits all" solution that works for everyone. You may need to experiment and find what is most suitable for your needs. Another factor to consider is whether you want to use paid for products or free alternatives. No single product is 100% foolproof and can prevent, detect and remove all threats at any given time. The security community is in a constant state of change as new infections appear. Each vendor has its own definition of what constitutes malware and scanning your computer using different criteria will yield different results. The fact that each program has its own definition files means that some malware may be picked up by one that could be missed by another. Thus, a multi-layered defense using several anti-spyware products (including an effective firewall) to supplement your anti-virus combined with common sense, safe computing and safe surfing habits provides the most complete protection.Important Tip: Always remember that security begins with personal responsibility. As a general rule, using more than one anti-spyware program like Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, SuperAntispyware, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, Spyware Terminator, etc. will not conflict with each other or your anti-virus if using only one of them for real-time protection and others as stand-alone scanners. In fact, doing so increases your protection coverage without causing the same kind of conflicts or affecting the stability of your system that can occur when using more than one anti-virus. The overlap of protection from using different signature databases will aid in detection and removal of more threats when scanning your system for malware. However, competing tools may provide redundant alerts which can be annoying and/or confusing as a result of the overlap in protection. If using multiple real-time resident shields (TeaTimer, Ad-Watch, MBAM Protection Module, Spyware Terminator Shields, etc.) together at the same time, there can be conflicts when each application tries to compete for resources and exclusive rights to perform an action. They may identify the activity of each other as suspicious and produce alerts. Further, your anti-virus may detect suspicious activity while these programs are scanning (reading) files, especially if it uses a heuristic scanning engine, regardless if they are running in real-time or on demand. The anti-virus may even detect as threats, any malware removed by these programs and placed into quarantined areas. This can lead to a repetitive cycle of endless alerts or false alarms that continually warn a threat has been found if the contents of the quarantine folder are not removed before beginning a new security scan.Keep in mind that you can overkill a system with resource heavy security programs that will slow down performance. Sometimes you just have to experiment to get the right combination for your particular system.***************************************************That being said, here are a couple suggestions of free products that are worth looking into. I would however advise performing further research on your own.Antivirus (Choose ONE)Avira Antivir - Free for personal home use only.Avast! - Free for personal home use only.Anti-MalwareMalwarebytes Anti-MalwareSUPERAntiSpyware FreeHope that helps.~Blade

What is the best Anti-Virus Program? I had Norton SystemWorks 2005, but it allowed alot of viruses in even though I kept it up to date.

A:Best Anti-Virus Software

In my view the best AV is trend micro anti virus.
Go to http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/products/personal_overview.php, and you can do a 12 day trial to see if you like it.
It's cheapish, easy to use and in my view finds the most virus's and has no false positives.

I download a lot of movies and music. What is the best anti virus software I should get?

A:Anti virus software

Please dont post the same question in multiple sections of the forums.

Surely all you music and films come from a reputable source like iTunes or something, so you shouldn't need any special AV.

I bought my computer about a year ago. Apparently the "trial" period for the anti-virus software was for one year (Norton 2000 was installed). Now I cannot download UPDATES cause my TRIAL period is over. My question is - Is there any good, free downloadable antivirus on the internet or do I have to go buy it from a store?
Just wondering.
Thanks

A:Anti-virus software

Are you sure. Norton usually has a one year period for virus definition updates and then you have to subscribe for another year. Cost's around 4 or 5 bucks for another years worth of updates.
If so you can get a free one here www.cai.com

I have been a long time user of Microsoft Security Essentials for my AV and it has worked well After hearing about the newer Ad Aware Free Internet Security getting positive reviews I gave it a try The download was enormous took Virus Anti Software a very long time even with a DSL connection but it installed fine and all was well until I had websites that I normally visit were giving me a redirect to some type of Yahoo Beta Search Page or something Then on top of that I kept getting notified in my system tray that anti virus was turned OFF If I clicked the Ad Aware icon Anti Virus Software it was showing as ON so this was troubling A full Ad Aware scan showed no viruses detected and a full Malwarebytes scan showed nothing also I decided to switch to Avira Antivir Personal Free AV ditched the Ad Aware and completed another full system scan with this as well as Malwarebytes No viruses and the redirects were no longer happening My PC s are clean and running great once again I use the aforementioned software as well as CCleaner and Auslogics disc defragger Do I Anti Virus Software or should I try a stand alone spyware program to supplement these Anti Virus Software I have used Superantispyware before and I know it is recommended by folks here Would adding it be overkill Thanks for any input

Adding SAS to what you already have is not overkill.

I'm currently running windows xp Service Pack 3 and using Avast anti-virus software. Windows alerts me saying it can't detect any anti-virus software. I have run Spybot which "hung" the first time I used it but then ran through and found nothing wrong. Windows Defender also found nothing wrong as did Avast and Malwarebytes. Advanced System Care 3 (professional) suggested I have the Hijack This log analysed. Sometimes settings (eg the Display settings have been altered or I was informed that Malwarebytes could not be updated because the version I'm using is outdated. Next time I tried to update everything was fine. I would be very grateful if you could help.

A:No anti-virus software ?????

Hello and welcome. Lets do this first. Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator. If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.Click the Start Scan button.Do not use the computer during the scanIf the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply. Now we test MBAM...Rerun MBAM (MalwareBytes) like this:Open MBAM in normal/regular mode and click Update tab, select Check for Updates, when doneclick Scanner tab, select Quick scan and scan (normal mode). After scan click Remove Selected, Post new scan log and Reboot into normal mode.

Guys would you know by any chance which one of the best virus software that certain can detect and remove "Hard-to-remove" virus/malicus/spyware that hid in my windows program 100%. I have AOL SSC and it SUCKS! To confirm it, I done AOL SSC scan, it did not detects any viruses/spyware/malicus... I went into www.microtrend.com and it list tons tons of virus/spyware/malicus files that found in my computer.

I also have Ad-Aware and Spybot software too but I don't know if it does any good since its free. So any suggestion which anti- virus/malicus/spyware software would you recommend the best?

A:Best Anti Virus software??

Hi...

For AV programs, there's only one I back 100%:

NOD32

Superb detection rates, low on resources, easy to just leave alone and let it get on with things, fairly straight forward to configure the advanced settings to get the best from the program.

For Anti-Spyware programs, I recommend:

Ewido
Pest Patrol
Spysweeper can be good too

Hope that helps :)

I currently use McAfee AV and am searching for another product. I have been reading all the great info on this subject in this forum. I also reviewed the report in Consumer Reports Sep 06 issue (page25). They list a product I have never heard of: BitDefender. I went to their site www.bitdefender.com and they offer a download for 2 users (I have 2 computers) a 2 year subscrliption for 39.95. Would appreciate any thoughts regarding this.
