NTLDR is missing and no Admin Password

Q: NTLDR is missing and no Admin Password

NTLDR is missing and I don't know the Admin Password

I have done everything I can think of. I tried creating a boot disk from instructions on the web and that didn't work.

I have tried every password I can think of. I have hit enter with no luck.

I was trying to get a password find download but could not find any that seemed legit.....

I booted up a vista cd but it wanted to wipe out everything I had on my harddrive.

When I try to Repair it from the Wind XP cd it needs an admin password which I can not figure out. Is there a download that I can transfer to my thumb drive to get my computer back up again. I have a Dell Vostro 1520.

Thank you so much!

Preferred Solution: NTLDR is missing and no Admin Password

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Ok, I know these questions have been asked, but I have tried everything I can understand.
Need to be spoken like a noob - step by step please.
Win10 put on my system everything initially fine, then discovered files missing - tried to install a recover program to be frustrated by a prompt to input an admin password with User [USER-PC\USER]
I have tried every password ever used.
I have tried going to cmd prompt
I cant install anything to circumnavigate because I cant get past this dialogue.

any suggests?

Hi. When a computer is first setup, the account created is an administrative one. What happened to this account?

The firm in which I work has a Lenovo PC with Windows 10 installed. There are two user profiles on the computer, the admin and another normal account without administration rights. We have only the password of the account without administrator rights.

The network administrator had left the company surprisingly in without giving the administrator password of the PC and we cannot contact him anymore.

Now we want to install another programme and we cannot do this without an administrator account.

I disabled secure boot and have tried to boot the PC with an Linux USB Stick, but it do not boot from the stick.

Any suggestion how I either can reset the password of the administrator account or create an new account with administrator rights.

A:Windows 10 admin password reset or new account with admin rights

Although there may be techniques to recover a lost password it is forum policy that we do not discuss these here - your best bet would be to visit a local security specialist and get them to recover/reset it for you - and a change to the policy for the replacement admin may be a good idea, I always wrote a list of all passwords and stored it with the Managing Director and also in a fireproof safe

I need to either change a guest log in (kid's access) to

I tried this already: Run: cmd net user guest *
I tried to rest the guest password this way but
it didn't work - I'm thinking it is because I am not
logged on as admin in the first place. What do I do now?

A:change guest login to admin or figure out admin password

you cant change an admins pw from a guest all

only way to change the admin pw is to boot to safe mode and enter the sys admin account or use a hacking program iso which you can find easily but use at your own risk....

A:no Ntldr (Ntldr Is Missing)

Firstly, your data on the drive can always be recovered. The problem is you would need access to another computer to download some software. As you do not have access to another computer, there is not much that can be done. Do you have access to a library computer that will let you download and run software and also allow the attachment of a USB flash drive?
If not, you will probably have to give it to a good independent computer shop to recover the info off the drive and possible repair it.

Hi, I work at a pawn shop, and we have a problem we have never encountered before.  This laptop, which is cleared and is now for sale in the shop, now asks for an administrator password or power on password.  It did not do this when it was brought in, nor when it was pulled from the back.  We were going to power it on for a customer, and it just started asking us for this password. I have seen in another post that you enter through it 3 times to get a code, so here is the code:61987774 Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I bought a laptop about a year ago. Shortly after buying it, we lost the password before making a backup disk. I couldn't change the password, we run Windows 7, without the old password. Luckily, or so we think, we have one of those laptops that has a fingerprint scanner so I have been able to log on using my fingerprint as a password. However, I can't believe that I am locked out of changing the passwords on this computer.

I have learned my lesson! Always back it up first! But for now, I need some help. I am also a little worried that I may have been hacked into. A friend said that if your password all of a sudden doesn't work, that is a sign of a hacker. That is what it felt like happened to me. I swear I thought I had the password right, then all of a sudden it stops working.

Thanks so much-Bill

A:NTLDR is missing

What boot loader are you using in Linux?
In what order did you install the Operating systems?
Are they dual booting on the same hard-drive different partition or 2 separate hard-drives?

You can create a winntboot disk and see if you can boot to XP.

Or you need to edit boot.ini and make sure that the path is correct.

Try this:

Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.

Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the R key to repair Windows.

Log into your Windows installation by pressing the 1 key and pressing enter.

You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.

Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk, as in green below The drive letter letter may be different on your computer.

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:
copy c:

Note Spaces and punctuation
Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

I know this is a common issue but well
After a power outage i was forced to get a new power source after the first one got fried. Then after connecting the cables i get the common NTLDR issue.
I download a windows XP SP2 and burn it in a CD to perform a repair.
I go to the bios and set the CD rom as priority but nothing happens. I keep trying and nothing. It just goes from the bios screen directly to the error.

Also if this helps the file is in ISO format. Not the files themselves but plain ISO. Don?t know if that helps

Can anyone say what NTLDR is and if there is any way round this problem. Thanks in advance.

I have an e-machines pc running windows XP SP1 and never had any major probs at all, but recently when i restarted after i reinstalled a new webcam all i got was NTLDR is missing msg. I have since learned how to get it to boot up using a windows cd and copying 2 NT files, but each time it needs to restart the same thing happens and i have to repeat the process all over again. Any advice would be welcome

Assuming its just a case of a corrupted file then the following should sort it out.

1. Put your Windows XP CD into CD drive.
2. Make sure BIOS is set to boot to CD drive.
3. Boot the computer from CD.
4. At menu, press "R" to load Recovery Console.
5. Select the installation to be fixed (Standard is 1 I believe)

*The following instructions assume CD-ROM is labeled as drive D and the hard drive partition the windows installation is on is labeled as drive C. Replace the letters accordingly.

6. Type "COPY D:\i386\ntldr C:\" and press ENTER. (without the quotes)
7. Type "COPY D:\i386\ C:\" and press ENTER. (without the quotes)
8. Remove CD and type "EXIT" and press ENTER (to reboot your computer).

This should replace the corrupted files and hopefully all will be OK, it shouldn't affect any data on the drive.

I recently installed the Windows 7 RC1 next to my XP Pro and used the Windows 7 bootloader. But whenever I try to boot into XP it tells me that NTLDR is missing, but it's right where it should be. So I booted from my XP CD and manually copied NTLDR and and the problem persisted. Anyone know why, or how to fix this?

This is the "normal" method to fix a corrupt or missing NTLDR:

[Courtesy of ComputerHope]

1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
5. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
You now have to locate your CD drive. The CD drive letter will depend on if/how your hard drive is partitioned and the number of CD drives. To do this:
Type "map" {without the quotes}

6. Copy the two files indicated below to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the example below we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter "E". This letter may be different on your computer.

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy e:\i386\ c:\

{There is a space after 'copy' and before 'c:\'}

7. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

If the problem persists, you may have a corrupt boot sector and/or master boot record.

1. Insert your XP CD and restart your computer.
2. At the Setup screen, press 'R' to access the Repair Console.
3. Select the installation you want to repair. Usually there's only a single one listed, such as C:\Windows or C:\WINNT. Type in the number and Enter.
4. On the next screen enter your password (if you have one).
5. On the next screen, at the prompt, type in chkdsk /r {with a space before the /r parameter} and press Enter. Let it run.
6. At the prompt again, type in "fixmbr" {without the quotes} and press Enter.
7. At the prompt again, type in "fixboot" {without the quotes} and press Enter.
8. Remove your XP CD and restart the computer.

Another fix that has been suggested is that because of disk fragmentation the NTLDR file has been moved out of place. The suggested fix is to pull the drive from the computer and attach it to another computer, either internally or via a USB enclosure, and defragment it from there.

Please post back a screenshot of Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image.

Try running a few Startup Repairs using a System Repair Disk to see what it finds.

Is there a COA sticker affixed to the machine showing that the Win7 installed upon it is Genuine? If not were you provided with this documentation? I'd ask the giver for this since it has a $100+ value and should be provided in case of reinstall.

If assured it is Genuine retail, you can also audit the Product Key from the drive using Belarc Advisor. Does the Product ID at Control Panel>System have an "OEM" in its string? This could be a complication. If not the Product Key can be used for reinstall if needed.

Hello, thanks for having me. I'm in a bit of a pickle at the moment with my other computer, and I was hoping someone could possibly help.

On the non-working PC, I was running Windows XP SP-2, and I was upgrading to SP-3 when it restarted, and came up with the NTLDR is missing error. This just so happens to be an error I'm familiar with, but this is where my problem starts: For some reason my CD-ROM is not reading the Windows XP Reinstallation disc. I'm thinking the CD reader finally died or something, because it IS a pretty old machine.

Now, I'm aware that I can use the XP disc to fix the missing NTLDR problem or even to reformat if I absolutely had to. My question is this: would there be any other relatively easy fixes to the NTLDR? Should I try having my CD-ROM replaced? What are my other options?

Basicaly the main problem is NTLDR is missing upon boot, i know this is basicaly BIOS saying i cant find your boot files... therfore cant boot, however i have tryied windows boot fix and ntldr blah blah...

I believe that the problem is there is a secondary partion on my harddrive, and i think its looking there. It is a very small and usless partion i guess i could just delete it.

My question is how to i change the settings to look in my c:\ drive for my boot.ini files and what not.

For some time my computer has been turning off randomly and trying to restart, but getting stuck. The problem is that when I try to run system recovery, it tells me that it has a runtime error and names "c:\minit\system32\restore.exe." A:NTLDR is missing.

Hi, the NTLDR error relates to Windows Xp not Linux and now the boot loader for Xp is missing, overwritten, due to the part install of Linux your only choice will be a full install of Linux.

What are you using to install Linux - a DVD or USB stick?
What version of Linux are you trying to install?
Burn the ISO file to a DVD.
Start the pc from the DVD - click on 'Try Linux Mint' not install.
This will also test the hardware, internet connection of your Pc and you will then know if Linux is compatible with your Pc.
Install on a USB stick and then install onto the hard drive.

So we got a new computer from one of my relatives and we were deleting things off the C:\ Drive and I guess we accidentally deleted NTLDR. Now, It wont boot.
We are looking at two solutions:
1. If we can't get NTLDR back and the computer running again, we were thinking of just completely wiping the Hard Drive, any tips on how to do that with just the BIOS?

2. Get NTLDR back if possible. I have tried the fix here
But it didn't work.

Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: The OS is Windows XP SP 2 if that helps.

A:NTLDR Is Missing...

The answer to this is here. You will need your XP disk to do the repair. The article deals with Windows 2000 but the process for XP is the same.

And, after this, NEVER delete files that you don't know. If you want to "clean up" a drive then use Add/Remove Programs to properly uninstall things you don't want.

I've tried many different disk drives that I know work and still the same thing. After talking with him he told me that the laptop did take a fall to the floor prior to this problem. It means the boot loader is possibly corrupt or if you're getting the message when booting from a CD that either the CD is damaged or the drive/lens is dirty.

I would suggest that you be careful about ordering recovery software from any website other than the original computer manufacturer's. It could be a bootlegged copy or not have the correct software for your machine meaning you would need a total re-install and would lose any data that was not backed up. I would suggest that you contact HP as they will usually allow you to purchase recovery discs for your exact machine for about $40 bucks, based on my previous experience.

I have an e-machines desktop running windows xp. The computer was working fine a few hours ago but now it says NTLDR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. I have been looking through other forums and tried the techniques that they offered but nothing worked. I don't have the recovery disks for the pc. I read in a forum that it's possible to copy the ntldr file from another computer that is also running xp. I have another computer but I'm not exactly sure how to copy the file and where do I go to install it on the broken desktop. Also, I was wondering if there might be any other files that I would need to copy.

Can you be more specific as to how you obtained and installed Windows XP in that laptop?

From what I can determine, it originally came with Windows Vista 32-bit.

For some reason and all of a sudden when I started my other PC (WinXP Home Ed 32 Bit) after the logo appears on the screen I get this blank (black) screen and a statement:

NTLDR is missing. Press Ctrl, Alt, Del to restart. After I do that it will restart but goes to the same sequence again. I have done nothing to the PC at all. I'm sending this via another PC with Win7. Anyone got any ideas why this is happening?
