My Dell Inspiron 5520 will respond when I press the power button, will flash all the LEDs and then just shut down. The whole process takes about 6 seconds. The fan starts up but nothing is displayed on the screen and there are no weird beeps. Any ideas on what is happening or how to get it to complete booting up?
I got this in December of 2012 and have had very few other problems with it
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Are you comfortable with disassembling the laptop? Really the only thing we can test is removing the Hard Drive, RAM, and DVD player.
First I would try the HD and DVD to see if either of those are stopping it from powering for what ever reason, and you will still get something on the screen and see if it boots.
Once you remove RAM you are not going to get anything on the screen, it doesn't POST(Power-On Self-Test) it will fail guaranteed, but you "SHOULD" get beeps, however the problem with that is ensuring the MB is actually causing the Beep, and if it's not it'll just do the same thing regardless, it's best to have some spare RAM that you know works to test with. (Same speeds and kind, need to be sure) The reason for this is to make sure that it's not RAM but you're not just getting the same issue.
Putting in some spare RAM will at least allow you to ensure it's not just the RAM chips, one thing to try if you have multiple sticks of RAM is try each stick separately, and in each slot to make sure it's not one stick or one slot causing and issue.
The only other things to make sure is the power that is getting to the laptop is clean power. Two ways to do this as well, firstly you can test the power supply using a Multi-Meter if you have one and know how to use it. You can check the voltages on the power supply, Connect to the wall and test the first portion to ensure 120V clean power, then if its good, test it going through the transformer and check the bottom of the laptop (Possibly underneath the battery) for the proper Voltage and Amperage. Test with the multimetre and see if it matches, if its not giving proper power it can cause tons of issues.
The other option is to buy a universal power supply and change the voltage to match the laptop and then try it. Due note that not ALL universals work with all models of laptop and that it's not the recommended way of power, it's best to use the adapter designed by the company, specially for HP's and Dell's as they seem to be much more proprietary than other companies.

Is you computer able to boot into Windows at least? And when in windows, you get the BSOD in random intervals? If so, check out the "EVENT VIEWER" and see if you see any errors listed. If so, post the errors here.
When was the last time your computer worked successfully without any BSOD? Have you installed any windows updates recently? Any additional softwares? Upgraded any of your computer hardware component drivers?
Will this 4Gb RAM work on my laptop ?
Below are the memory specs for your computer. You will need to verify which processor you have installed. Depending on the processor will determine the type of memory to install.

I can not change Legacy boot order in A14 BIOS. I'm not able to set CD/DVD Drive before Hard Drive. Even if I save changes, the BIOS will always use Hard Drive to boot instead CD/DVD Drive. When I check again the bios boot order, CD/DVD Drive always is at last place. If I set it to be the first then the whole BIOS crashes down when I try to save changes. Is it a feature or a bug?http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19983066
I have DELL Inspiron 15R 5520 and for some reason i cannot update BIOS from Windows and i want to make a bootable USB Drive to update BIOS from outside Windows but i can't find the proper software to make my USB drive bootable for my specific laptop model.
I tried the following tutorial which was made by Dell:
Unfortunately, the software mentioned there ( DDDP ) doesn't support my laptop model.
Please tell me how to make a bootable USB for my laptop in order to update BIOS properly.
I triede looking for a post like that, but couldn't find one so i decided to make one.
As you probably see, I have an Inspiron 5520 with i7 and a second GPU(Radeon 7670m) with 1GB and I was wondering, if it's possible to upgrade the GPU with one that's more powerful, for example a 7670m with 2 Gb.
Thanks for the help :)
Hi, I have a DELL Inspiron 5520 with 2 Graphics Cards:
ATI Radeon 7670M & Intel HD 4000
I've installed the drivers required and unfortunately the switchable graphics section in "Catalyst Control Manager" doesn't have an option to manually change the graphics card. It has the option to choose what graphics card a program should use, but that never works. I know that if I find a modded BIOS like in this thread:
Acer Laptop: Switchable Graphics using i7 & AMD Radeon
Then it will work for me, but my problem is that I don't know if that BIOS is specifically for ACER laptops or I can use it on my DELL. If not, I'd appreciate it if someone came up with a BIOS for DELL. Also, I'd like to know what that BIOS has that the original one didn't, please explain. For example, removing whitelist, etc ...
Y u need to manually switch the graphics card when it can automatically switch according to the requirements??? If u want a program to b run with better graphics, go to switchable graphics, browse the program in it and set priority to high performance...http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-cards/253688-switchable-graphics-dell-inspiron-5520-not-working.html
So, I bought a new laptop and the internet has never worked right. I will consistently get a DNS Error code, no matter what I try. I've tried wiping it several times, updating all networking drivers, uninstalling the pre installed Mcafee and what not. It's only at my house, though. I can take it to class or to the public library and it connects with no problem. I thought it was our internet at home that was having the error, but the tech guy has been here four times to fix it and every time it still doesn't work. I also have several phones and other laptops connected to our internet that work fine. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Yesterday when i turned on my laptop, i faced the error named 0xc000014c, it says to boot and repair windows with external USB/DVD, i tried doing it with a DVD. But the setup is unable to complete the booting process, its not even showing the dvdv booting option.
Please Help me regarding my case.
My Dell 15R 5520 Laptop only starts up sporadically. When I can get it to start up, it functions properly. Sometimes I can even restart it successfully.
The rest of the startup attempts (75%) result in the buttons above the keyboard lighting up and then going dark followed by 7 beeps.
After some research, the seven beeps indicates a CPU issue.
So far, I've done the following, without resolution.
-Ran System Restore back to before the latest Windows update.
-Ran the startup diagnostics (no errors found)
-Reseated the processor chip and replaced the thermal compound
-Reseated the memory chips, as well as replaced them
-Tried a different power adapter
I'm stumped since I cannot identify the specific problem, and since the problem isn't consistent.
Any suggestions/advice/help would be greatly appreciated!
My laptop Dell Inspiron 15R 5520(Core i3 2370M 6GB ram win 7 64bit) worked perfectly from Nov2012-April2016.
Now the screen started flickering and jumping since a few days and there's a white dotted line that appears along the top of the screen that starts the minute there is any kind of display.
How do I figure out if the inverter on the screen is faulty or if it's the screen cable or the whole screen itself?
To satisfy my curiosity I opened up my laptop to find that the lcd cable was badly crushed under the screen hinge (definitely , a design/manufacturing issue! Will dell take responsibility?), and each time the screen was shut/open there was substantial pressure on the cable was what I noticed.
Unfortunately I'm out of warranty and I don't know what to do.
Please advise on fixing this issue.
I've already tried deactivating adaptive screen light.
seems incompatibility with windows 10

I am totally stucked..My laptop's warranty period is over. I need your help
Thanks in advance.
Monitor screen becomes distorted and fuzzy momentarily. Continues only while in battery mode. Will not do it when plugged into wall. Previous OS was Windows 7 with no problems. After Windows 10 install problems started. Did a 2nd clean install of Windows 10, still have video issues.
Thanks for writing to us.
We see the product is not tested for windows 10. Would suggest to go back to the windows 7.
If you can try updating the drivers from the actual vendors website (Intel or Nvidia ) and observe if it makes any difference.
If still the same consider rolling back to windows 7.
Hi I upgradability 15R 5520 Inspiron Windows 10 bought a Dell R new from Dell Australia in November It has a rd gen Core i processor it rsquo s been upgraded to gb of RAM and thus should be able to run Windows However when I click the Windows upgrade option all I ever get is ldquo We rsquo re validating Windows for your PC While upgrades have started for most PCs we rsquo re continuously working with our partners to ensure that even more PCs work well with Windows Microsoft recommends that you upgrade only after you get your upgrade notification rdquo After waiting patiently for the green light I decided to check the Dell website to find out what Windows 10 upgradability Inspiron 15R 5520 the holdup was and received the impression that Only a limited number of Dell models have been approved for Windows and mine is not Windows 10 upgradability Inspiron 15R 5520 on the list although the is If your machine rsquo s not on the list you dip out Dell does not intend releasing Windows drivers for them By following some convoluted procedure you can install Windows but if you do you Windows 10 upgradability Inspiron 15R 5520 may encounter serious problems such as losing your audio or screen brightness control I call on someone from Dell to confirm whether or not these impressions are correct If they are I find it incredible that Dell does not provide Windows support for such a recent model and I believe customers are entitled to take appropriate action against the company If my information is not correct would Dell please advise when we might be able to upgrade to Windows Thank you Dr Ewan Hoozami
This is true, we might consider low grading Dell PDs if Dell does not come up with a solution soon. Most PC vendors should keep support for a minimum of 5 yearshttp://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/f/4997/t/19647835

Hi My laptop is DELL Inspiron R and i bought it years ago and it was performing nice but recently i got a problem with my laptop and i hope someone can identify the problem and help me to solve it The problem is 15R Inspiron 5520 Problem Strange that my laptop makes beep per second whenever i press the power button and i had to hold the power button to turn the laptop off and the same thing continues - times before it eventually powers up and boots into Windows like Inspiron 15R 5520 Strange Problem normal I was able to run ePSA diagnostics and it found no problems and from Windows i was able to run a test on the motherboard using Support Assistant program which i downloaded from DELL website but the test result is Passed It seems that my laptop won t boot into Windows from the first try but it will beep and fail to boot for a number of times and after multiple tries it boots into Windows like it should Can someone tell me what is the real reason behind this and how to solve this problem Sorry for the long description of the issue and thanks in advance to anyone who can help me
Single beep means a mainboard failure - - while it may not yet have completely failed, you may want to consider shopping for a new system in the near future, as your current one is on its way out -- and replacing a mainboard is a major repair cost that likely isn't justified on an older system like this one.http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19989998
Hi all, I am using same laptop (Inspiron 15R 5520) and upgraded to windows 10 and running smoothly and perfectly. I am wondering why Dell ignored to test such latest device with windows 10. If anybody need assistance contact me rather dell support, because dell does not have enough time to test this device with windows 10.
Unfortunately, Dell did not test every computer for Windows 10. That doesn't mean that Windows 10 will not work on your computer. Windows 10 has built in drivers to support some systems that Dell did not test WIndows 10 on. Glad your system is running Windows 10 smoothly.
We have this laptop that is a Dell Inspiron 5520 that fails to boot for the most part. That is, we would attempt to boot the machine via power button and the quick launch buttons on the keyboard would light up in a sequence (the laptop should beep on POST error; this is not an error code...these always light up like this when booting.) After a few seconds the machine will shut off. Typically it takes a few tries (sometimes 5-6 other times many more) attempts at booting where the system actually completely start up properly.
I am convinced there is a problem with the motherboard but wanted more input and ideas that we can try and look into. Thanks for any and all suggestions. Please note the machine is not currently under warranty and runs Windows 8 on x64.
I presume you've done the initial step of using with battery and with only the power adapter connected? The intermittent problem of which you have concluded as a motherboard problem is also a usual suspect at this point.
Today my laptop's screen turned blue while working on a Word document, afterwards it wouldn't boot. I took out the battery and waited for a minute or so and tried to boot it, the outcome was a series of 4 beep sounds and no startup at all. ¿What should I do?
Welcome to Dell Community Forum.
4 beeps on start-up would indicate memory read-write failure. You may need to remove and reseat the memory on your computer. Please ensure that the system is powered off and the AC adapter and battery are removed prior to reseating the memory modules.
During installation or removal of any hardware, always ensure that all data is backed up properly.
Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer.
Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.
Please click on the link below for the Owner's Manual under 'Manuals & Documentation" where you will be able to see the steps for reseating memory on your Dell computer.
Let me know if further help is needed.

Hi there A while ago I had an accident with my Inspiron R which ended in a broken headphone jack An easy solution would be to remap the Microphone nbsp jack to work as an headphone one but i can t find any way to do that I already did some research found out it has a Conexant CX audio codec which supports jack retasking 5520: jacks Remap Inspiron audio but conexant doesn t have any more info about that codec nor they have any kind of software available which could do that The Dell Audio software only allows me to choose between Microphone and Line In for that jack Comparatively a realtek sound chip of similar specs comes with Inspiron 5520: Remap audio jacks software to do that by default and it is well known how to do that in the windows registry in case the software isn t able to do so So this is how things are Although it is supposed to be possible to retask the ports i have no idea how to do it nbsp If anyone could guide me into retasking my audio ports i would be very thankfulhttp://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/t/19963491
I have upgraded my laptop from 4GB to 12GB (4+8). After the upgrade, the laptop boots and runs very very slowly. My laptop came with 4GB ram 1600 single stick. I upgraded the RAM by adding another stick of 8GB same bus and same manufacturer. The BIOS shows the total memory as 2288MB instead of 12288MB. Windows detects total RAM of 12GB but boots and runs very slowly.I have updated the BIOS from A06 to A07 trying to resolve the problem but with no luck. When installing each RAM stick alone (4gb or 8gb), everything works fine, but the issue comes back again when both sticks are mounted together even when switching the places on the sockets.Looking for your kind support!
The problem is solved after the latest BIOS update A11http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19468207

Hello I have Inspiron which originally has i m I have upgraded the CPU to i - 3632QM not i7 inspiron Boost 5520 Turbo with working QM and it works perfectly but I found out that Turbo Boost is not activating during the work Here is the diagnosis from HWinfo As you can see it shows that Turbo inspiron 5520 with i7 3632QM - Turbo Boost not working Boost is not activated And from my tests I can definetely tell that the maxumum speed of the CPU is nominal - GHz without any further rising according to the Turbo specs Also I tried to install the Intel utility to monitor Turbo Boost but it gave an error saying that it can t find CPU with Turbo Boost support But the QM is supporting it ofcourse BIOS settings do not have any Turbo Boost options so It can t be activated deactivated from there The BIOS version is latest avaliable A Why Turbo can t be activated on this laptop And I saw that many other people with different machines can t do it as well That is so pity and unfair How I can enable it Looking for your help please
What is the power adapter wattage rating? If you're using the adapter from the i3, it's probably a 65W adapter. You need 130W or better to run the i7 at its full speed.http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19993866
Hello! I have a really weird problem with updating my graphics card. The only driver that works with it is from Dell support downloads, but the driver is from february 2013. There are many releases of drivers for my graphics card in AMD website and when i tried to update it from there (properly) with the latest driver it gives errors. So really? The only driver I can use is from Dell support and it's so outdated that almost every new game crashes and stuff?
Note: It's with switchable graphics, the main card is Intel HD 4000 and it really pisses me off.
Hope that you can find solutions for me and thanks!
Did you update the Intel driver as well? That needs to be up to date before the AMD driver can be updated.http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3519/t/19608557
I have a dell inspiron 545 won't start. The power supply checks out ok. The motherboard light comes on when i turn it on and the fan starts for a few sec. then goes off and I get one peep. I was told the one peep means to reseat your memory. I took out my memory installed one at a time and still a peep. any one have any ideas?
Came home tonight and the computer was in sleep mode. pressed the start button, but the monitor only opened the Dell Logo page with a f2 or f12 option in the top right of the screen (neither option worked) and nothing else happened. Tried Control, Alt, Delete......turned it on and off several times.
Does anyone know how to install the Dell Wireless Utility for AT&T on a Dell Latitude E6500? I was able to install the 5520 drivers using the method here http://blog.marc-seeger.de/tag/5520/1 but I can't figure out how to get the utility to install. When I try to install it I get a message "Not a dell compatible system" The file I am trying to use for the install is DELL_MULTI-DEVICE_A05_R216783. Thanks in advance.
The usual cause of this is a missing installation of the Dell notebook system software - has that been installed?http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19340290

It sounds like the screen convertor has failed, or the board has failed, I suggest putting the old board back in this way if it works OK you know the board is faulty...
Right, so I have a dell Inspiron laptop it was fine and then I turned it off for the night and when I went to turn it on the next day it froze on the starting windows screen and has done this every time I have started it up. Nothing has fixed it, I have tried every but a reinstallation desk or similar and taking it to a professional. Please help thanks
Press F8 BEFORE windows starts to load. See if it will run in Safe Mode.
Startup Repair is another option. I think Dell includes this in the recovery panel, accessed by F8 at Power One.
All right so one day my laptop was on and I wanted to turn it off I didn't feel like going to Start gt Shut Down and waiting for everything to close so I just held down the power button until it shut off Just put that in here in case it's important Now when I turn it on it goes to the 'Windows has failed to start' screen It gives me Dell Up. 1545 Start Inspiron Won't two options - 'Launch Startup Repair' and 'Start Windows Normally' If I try to launch Startup Repair the screen turns black for a second and goes back to the 'Windows has failed to start' screen If I start Windows normally it tries to boot and just ends up getting the Dell Inspiron 1545 Won't Start Up. 'Windows has failed to start' screen again If I try putting in a Windows installation disk the screen Dell Inspiron 1545 Won't Start Up. just flashes black and goes back to the 'Windows has failed to start' screen And if I press F as it starts I get a screen that says 'Choose an operating system or tool ' I can only pick Windows or Windows Memory Diagnostic The diagnostic tool does a scan but nothing comes up after it The screen also says 'To specify an advanced option for this choice press F ' However that does nothing So any ideas on how to fix this I've managed to get to the screen where I can choose to boot in Safe Mode or the last known good configuration Problem is when I try to boot in safe mode I get a blue screen and then it restarts Last known good configuration doesn't work either But I can also get into the BIOS now so maybe I can use that to fix it

My Laptop over heated today and I removed the back plate to gain access to clean out the fan ect Once I tried to boot the computer up everything flashed at me like always but then turned off the screen remained black I ve done a little research via googled and I have tried Removing the AC power lead and the battery and switched them about to see 1525 Dell Inspiron, start won't if it would resolve but resulted in the same issue as stated above Holding the power button down for seconds without the laptop having power and with power Then powering up I ve pulled the HDD Dell 1525 Inspiron, won't start and the memory as instructed by the Dell support site When power was disconnected and booted switch the memory about and booted a number of time Everything was re-connected properly This is driving me totally mad as I need the laptop due to work and other reasons I paid about four years ago so it s no longer under warranty also none of the settings where changed Dell 1525 Inspiron, won't start before the issue began I would be grateful for any advice or assistance So what is the possible issue that I m having is my motherboard fried or is it something else nbsp

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop which is only about two years old. When buying it, i pretty much selected all of the top of the line parts dell offered while in the customizing step. A few days ago the screen went black and it crashed. From that point on I couldn't get it to turn back on. everytime i press the power button, the green light in the button flashes for a second and then it just dies. nothing comes up on the screen, its as if the power just gets cut a second after the power button is pressed. im guessing this is a hardware problem, but i dont know because ive kept very good care of it, barely ever moving it. can someone please help?
and welcome to the Forum
Try disconnecting from power and taking the battery out for 5 mins and see if that helps.
I keep getting back to this message.
Your cd/dvd drive during this boot cycle is f :

The best thing to do is start from scratch. You would need to reformat (Wipe out the drive and reinstall windows). What is the OS on this computer? If Windows 7, most Dell PCs have a recovery partition to wipe it back to factory defaults, thus getting rid of all the data. If not, you should be able to download a copy of your version of windows from Microsofts ISO Bank and burn the image file to a disk (Instructions are on Microsofts ISO Bank site). Then use the product key on the side/underside of the computer to re-activate windows. But lets start with what version of windows is on there now?http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/562464/fresh-start-dell-inspiron-519/
Usually when power button is pressed you can clearly hear it starting (almost sounds like a small engine and then a shot bip before the motherboard screen comes up. But now the bip never comes and the engine-like sound doesn't stop, it just keeps going and the computer never starts up. After a couple of seconds (much longer than normally) two short bips come. This is repeated until power off.
What model? Could be RAM. Have you tried reseating it?
Total nightmare Started w monitor going into auto-save screen would freeze or go black at any point sometimes after Dell screen after password entered or after surfing but definitely pretty early on Did hard shut-downs even unplugged power cord same result Switching monitor cord from digital cord to analog cord seemed to work for one day But problem resurfaced I m no troubleshooter but buddy tried bunch of things computer ran very slow Eventually showed that Vista Service Pak update was available Installed update computer ran great for mins so figured everything OK so shut it down Next day flickering lines immediately across all early screens Eventually ton of bizarre horizontal and vertical lines filled screen entirely no semblance of a picture so did hard shutdown Yesterday and today turn on tower total black on screen quot Self-test feature quot color bars square nothing Dell upon start-up Inspiron 530 Solved: floats around the screen nonstop after I reconnected analog cord but no real image on the screen Have no idea what to do Please help nbsp
Test the monitor on another PC or test another monitor on that PC. That will determine if you have a monitor or PC issue.
With that said, based on your description of the "lines", I'd suspect a faulty video card.
have had a new dell computer since late dec. '07. worked fine(although i do not care for vista)until sunday morning. when i powered up the computer it went to a screen that said "windows recovory system" and gave me 4 options to start up. in safe mode, safe mode with networking and with command prompt. or to start it up normally. none of those worked. once past that screen, the screen just stayed dark with the white cursor showing in the middle. tried to fix by going in through the advanced boot options, repairs computer selection. tried to do a start up repair from there and that did not work. so, before i do a factory restore, has anyone heard of this problem happening? and if so, any solution idea's other than a factory restore? thanks All
I was using my laptop fine today until my Powerpoint session froze It would not allow be to do a Ctrl Alt Del to end the task so I pressed the on off button down for seconds to reset However since doing that the laptop will no longer start up When I press the on off button I can hear the fan go on and the quot on quot symbol is illuminated The Dell logo appears with the word quot Inspiron quot below and a progress bar In the bottom right hand corner it says quot F Setup and F Boot Options quot If I press neither of these the screen goes blank after about a second and the fan shuts down Please could Dell not will start Inspiron 1545 up someone help If I press quot F Boot Options quot I get the options quot Internal HDD quot quot CD DVD CD-RW Drive quot quot Onboard NIC quot quot BIOS Setup quot and quot Diagnostics I don t want to progress any further as I don t want to make it worse Please could someone help Thanks Adam
What is the operating system so I can move this topic to the appropriate forum?
I recently re-installed WinXP, and then proceeded to download the drivers I needed from Dell.com.
I restarted after installing one driver, and now the computer will not go past the power-on stage. I hit the power button, the capslock/numlock/scrolllock lights flash, then it just sits there with fans spinning doing nothing. The display doesn't even turn on.
It doesn't seem to respond to pressed keys (ie F2, F8 or delete).
I would try to reset the system by removing all power, including the battery, for an hour.
It really sounds like more of a hardware than a software problem if you are not getting any display or keyboard functionality from the git-go.
I would contact Dell support regardless of whether the system is under warranty for their input.
My Dell Inspiron 4000 worked fine since 2003 with no troubles.
Suddenly It could not be started a few days ago. A CD is stuck inside the CD slot.
When press the power button, three indication lights (small green lights) flashes for a few seconds and go off.
the laptop was turned off regularly, the power connection is fine, battery is charged, no sound heard, no search on harddrive or CD drive, CD slot cannot be pushed open.
Anyone can tell me what to do to fix it and get the CD out?
1 - try starting the laptop from the mains but with the battery removed
2 - straighten out a paperclip and use this in the small hole on the front of the CD drive. Press gently and it should release the caddy which will pop out.
If the PC fails to start, it may be that the power management board has failed - not a repair for a novice (or Dell) so a local shop might be able to help.
I've had this start-up problem with my dell inspiron 1545 for quite some time now. I've tried every step provided in the dell tech support forums and nothing has worked due to the fact that a) my computer won't show the Advanced Boot Options or b) my laptop won't recognize the re-installation drive in the DVD drive. I've also done a memory diagnostic test just to see if my laptop would restart the system as it promised during the test, but the test freezes its process at 99% complete.
Immediate help or advice would be very much appreciated!
Try and see if your computer is able to at least boot into safe mode. Turn on your computer and then keep on tappnig the "F8" key to bring up the safe mode menu. Once the safe mode menu comes up, choose "safe mode w/ networking". Hope everything works out well for you.
I have a dell inspiron 4000 running windows xp pro with service pack 2.
When I press the start button it runs the bios meter which goes to full. The screen then goes black. There is a whirring sound as it trys to read the cd rom which is empty then it sparks back up to the bios page. The meter runs its course then the screen goes black and the whole process starts again. I've tried starting in safe mode (via f8) but the same thing happens. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.
When I try to turn the computer on it lights up for a few seconds then turns off , the only light that says on is the battery light ( when ac is plugged in other wise nothing is on . I was having a similar problem when the ram was loose that was fixed yesterday ( instead of the battery light being on it was flashing every 10 sec or so ) . Do you think its still the ram? Ive taken it out and put it back in a few times because I though that was the issue but that didn't fix the problem .
and what's the model of laptop?
This is probably a simple fix, but at present haven't found an answer from any site I've visited. My laptop won't start - as in NO POWER of any kind. I have no idea how to troubleshoot this. I have removed the battery and held the power button down from 30 seconds to 3 minutes, a few times, and then restarted the computer. Nothing works. The computer is 'dead.'
I would appreciate any advice concerning this. The laptop is a Dell Inspiron E 1705. OS is Windows XP.
i was using my laptop the other night when in bed and had it on my quilt cover. all of a sudden the whole thing just turned off and when i tried to turn it back on again there was no power goin to it at all no lights nothing. so i took the battery out of it and tried and power lead and then put them back in and tried to turn it on again and nothing happened. it is a windows vista. also when i have the lead plug into the socket and not the laptop the blue light will come on the lead but when i go to plug it into the laptop the blue light turns off.. please any help is greatly appreciated

I have a dell Inspiron 9400 laptop running windows vista business that I can't get to go past this screen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have tried taking out the battery and powering up battery-less to remove any static or residual charge, but that didn't help.
I have been trying to boot it with nothing plugged in to it either.
I rarely use this computer anymore, but do need it for work occasionally and urgently now! The last time I used it was a few weeks ago and it did do an automatic windows update.
Thanks in advance,
Now when I try to power it up I get a completely black screen and the three lights above the keyboard flash. These look like a Bluetooth sign, a wifi sign and the third one is a little square with an arrow in it.
slow start up for windows and internet ( approx 50 mins )icon in bottom right hand corner has a red cross over an icon of two monitors. The red cross disappears when the start up has finished. Lots of memory left but the computer did start to slow down but now its ridiculous.Once running everything is fine.

Hello -Do you remember the last time this computer started in Normal or Safe Mode ??There may be a short in your motherboard, or Power Supply Unit.A PDF service Manual is available < Here -Remove the Battery from the Notebook and power it on using only the AC Adapter Thank You -http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/503451/dell-inspiron-1764-wont-start/
I was reading another thread that described the same problem that i have, it seems to be closed though.
I have a dell inspiron 1100. It wasn't registering that the AC was connected and then the battery ran dead. Now it wont start at all. When i hit the power button the lights on the front of the lap top blink green and then orange. If i take the battery out the lights on the computer are very faint, the battery light is orange and the power light is green. When i put the battery back in the lights shut off.
Is this a simple replace the battery or ac cord problem? Any advice would be greatly welcome.
Notebooks do not need a battery to run off the mains, so take the battery out, plug the notebook in and if it doesn't power up then you need to check out the power supply and/or other possibilities.
I have an Dell Inspiron running XP The battery has died so it s been running plugged in with the battery removed battery is shot Yesterday it just wouldn t start up The LED indicator lights on the unit come on for a few seconds and then go out No warning signs previously As a matter of fact it s been running surprisingly well for an old laptop I realize it s an old computer and has probably had it but it s apparent demise was so sudden Any ideas The charger power supply brick light is on and since the lights on the computer do come on for a while it is getting power Just after I posted this hubby put the battery back in this unit was given to me by someone who didn Dell Inspiron up 2200 won't start suddenly t want it anymore and Dell Inspiron 2200 suddenly won't start up wonder of wonders it started up but a screen for recalibrating the battery came up It s supposed to take several hours so won t know for a while if this is it Ever hear of recalibrating a battery It s a new one on me nbsp
I recently purchased a new Dell laptop After downloading and installing a bit torrent client- Utorrent the automatic updates have had problems finishing When the computer is shutting Inspiron problems start-up Dell M5030 down during the restart the configuration process stops at and shuts down When restarting I get the start-up repair screen And then I have to go through the restoration process which leads me to the restore point before the automatic update This happens every time I install the updates and is very irritating On top of that automatic update is constantly prompting me to install the updates that never finish installing My startup process takes about ten minutes because of this Can someone please help me with this problem The Dell Data Safe program is the only thing I can think of that may be the problem Is it known to conflict with bit torrent clients Or is it Microsoft Security Essentials I ve never had this problem with XP and a custom built desktop This is my first Dell and my first time using Security Essentials Any help is appreciated
Remove the bit torrent completely. Up date your anti virus and complete a long scan. Install Malwarebytes Anti Malware and update. Run a long scan. Torrents and P2P are very good ways to get bad things on your computer.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/405185/dell-inspiron-m5030-start-up-problems/

Refurbished doesn't necesarily = bad computer. Problems can occur with new one also. Try continually tapping F8 after loading bar disappears and choose: Last Known Good Configuration (Advanced)http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f217/start-up-issue-on-dell-inspiron-1525-a-648049.html

I cannot really give you a lot of specs amp details on it as I m really inept about computers Basically it starts ok to begin with fans working and you can tell it s working Then it gets to the vista style welcome screen with the word welcome and a small start Dell will not properly 1525 Inspiron blue circle to show its loading Then a very Dell Inspiron 1525 will not start properly alarming sort of ticking sound starts in the lower left side of the keyboard below the fan and thats as far as it will go or a blue screen will appear telling me they ve encountered an error and will restart my computer Only when it restarts to Dell Inspiron 1525 will not start properly get the same result I have the OS on a disk if I need to re-install it and a friend who is of reasonable talent with computers But away on holiday As I m said I m very sorry I cannot give you any more information as I m not well gifted with computers I m an aspiring EMT if that helps any S Dell Inspiron 1525 will not start properly I was on MSN when it froze I left it for ages and then held in the power button to restart Then na-dah nbsp
Well, you're getting past the POST test where the BIOS checks for hardware errors. The ticking noise could be a few things, really. It could be a hard drive failure, where you have a hard drive that works to boot but can't read much farther. You could have bad RAM but I'm not sure it would account for the noise. It's also possible you just have some corrupted system files.
The easiest way to do this is to try Safe Mode. On your next reboot, tap F8 several times until you get a list of start up options. Select Safe Mode and tell us if it loads this time. We'll go from there...
i have a dell inspiron 1150 and the power cord got loose and it would flicker from charging to not and now it wont even turn on with the cord in the two outsids lights on the front either flash ot go steady deprnding on how you wiggle the cord it wont power on st all the dell people said it was a bad board are they right? any ideas?
The DC Jack is broken. This DC Jack is where you plug in the AC adapter. The jack is soldered to the motherboard, and It can be replaced without having to replace the motherboard
My wife's laptop has stopped working. She tells me that when she switched it on there was a screen which said Windows was closing down because there was a threat to the computer, possibly due to a recent update, or something like that. By the time I reached the computer this message had disappeared leaving a whiteish slightly shimmering screen.
I tried switching off and restarting but after about 15-20 seconds the whirring stopped and the computer did nothing else.
I tried to start in safe mode by tapping F8 with same result
I tried to start in safe mode holding F8 down, same result.
During the time the computer is switched on the lights flash amber a few times then green, this is repeated at regular intervals.
I would be grateful if someone can help for she seems to hold me responsible for losing all her photographs (the main purpos of this computer).
My Dell Inspiron 580s was working fine till yesterday night. I had connected extra hard drive to recover files from this extra hard drive. It takes long time to recover these files. So I kept computer on whole night. This morning the computer was on, all lights and fans were working. However the keyboard and mouse lights were off. So I switched off the computer. When restarted the yellow light inside the computer all fans started. Front white light was also on. But there was amber light at start button & it beeps 4-5 times and stops and beeps again. I disconnected all the peripherals disconnected power supply then pressed on button for 1 min. Still it won't start. Please help.
Hi David,We’re listening and thats really sad to know that the computer is not powering on. We’ll surely try and assist you. We request you to let us know the exact number of beeps when you try powering on the computer, so that we can proceed further in troubleshooting the computer in a right way.http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19996293
I recently bought a Dell Inspiron MIni 10 off of ebay. It seemed to be perfect, then I began surfing the internet and the antivirus program started causing trouble. It turned out to be malware so I uninstalled it and it worked fine. Then I went to youtube an the computer randomnly froze. Now I try to start it up and it gets to the Windows XP Home screen, then freezes. It used to work in Safe Mode. I even did the system restore. Now it gets past the dell load up screen, but then displays a black screen. It will not go any farther and now safe mode doesn't even work. I did diagnostics and got no error codes.
Dell inspiron 6000 windows xp; turns on, loading the dell logo and the bar goes almost all the way across- but then - before the log in user screen, it will go to a black screen and just have a little cursor that looks like this: _ blink over and over again.
I tried, when the dell screen originally first comes on, to press F12 or F2 to reboot it - nothing happens. F8 same thing; blink blink little cursor on upper left hand side of screen
what to do?
I would check to see if the HD is seated well. somtimes the drives can get loose. Check side of laptoptop. If thats not the case try starting with The Dell CD That has the OS on it. If the computer asks what to do when it finds disk, choose repair if all else fails. DO NOT CHOOSE REFORMAT or anthing else.
I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 that is about 2 years old. It started to freeze up earlier today while I was on the internet (we have a wireless modem in our apartment). It continued to freeze a few more times but would restart each time normally. I did receive a blue screen/physical memory dump screen once during this that said there was a problem and Windows shut down...Now it freezes almost immediately after start up and is now freezing up during start up while on the Windows XP screen. It does not even begin to open the Windows program anymore. Our wireless modem/router is a Netgear through Charter and we just recently set up our internet through Charter about two weeks ago. A new setup file for Charter was installed by one of their employees. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I do want to recover my files before it's too late. Thanks in advance!
Hi, if someone could help me would be great! I receive this 7beep code from the motherboard every time I try to boot my inspiron duo 1090, nothing on screen just a 7 beep code not like 3-2-2 or 3-4 or something is a 1-1-1-1-1-1-1. I saw around the net that this is common and is just a fake alarm from the motherboard, and that dell support have told ppl to just press the FN key while booting and that bypasses the P.O.S.T. and boots like nothing again, some ppl say the just left they're computer there and tried like 2 weeks later and booted like normal. I tried this FN key to bypass the P.O.S.T. but NOTHING happened and my duo is out of warranty already and I don't wanna pay for a fake code or something please somebody help me =(
I found an American webpage telling how to solve this within half an hour. At first I thought is was mad. I was desperate so I tried it.With the laptop on and beeping away wrap it up tightly in a large towel and place under the duvet. Leave it for 1/2 hour and then unwrap and switch off. Leave it to cool down and then switch on. I writing this on a dell laptop that had the 7 beeps and the above treatment. It works!!!http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19391927
I purchased a brand new Dell Inspiron 15 3000 2 months before.
This system is having Windows 8.1 OS
I'm facing the start up problem from last month. Problem is
1. Sometimes when I pressed the power button system won't start. Black screen comes then it won't boot
2. Sometimes when I pressed the power button system will boot up to password screen, if I entered the password and hit the enter key, again Black screen comes.
3. Sometimes shutdown is not possible.
a. I tried to shutdown by using mouse (Start -> Power Options -> Shut down) it won't take the command
b. I tried to shutdown by using keyboard (Pressing Alt+F4) it won't take the command itself
Please post a solution for this.
Run the Diagnostics to test the hardware and contact Dell Support in your country if it shows hardware problems.
Alt+F4 is just to close windows, not shutdown. To shutdown, right click on the Start Button and choose the last item in the list-- Shutdown or Sign Off. It might be off your screen so scroll down the list. Do NOT select Power Options.
yes, but it never worked. dell is the worst company and useless in it's response to fix problems.
when they do respond they make things worse.
trust them at your own peril.
I am sorry that you feel this way about Dell. Please reply with the problem that you are having with your Dell system and i may be able to help. I will also be sending you a friend request, please accept if you still require service.

Follow below steps which can resolve the issue.
Attempt to boot to the Last Known-Good Configuration:
Power on the system.
Press <F8> when the message for troubleshooting and advanced startup options for Windows, press F8 appears.
Choose Last Known-Good Configuration.
NOTE:This procedure only works if the system has not successfully booted since any changes were made.
Run Windows Recovery Environment and execute "chkdsk c: /r" to fix the file system and check the hard drive for errors. To run the chkdsk.exe tool, you must start Windows RE.
To do this, follow these steps:
Put the Resource DVD Drivers disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
Press a key when you are prompted.
Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
Click Repair your computer.
Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.

Initially it was not booting at all, pressing the power button would make the indicators light up and a clicking noise would be produced. Then i tinkered with it and realized that removing the WiFi adapter (in-built) made it boot. If i put it back the system immediately turns off. Please help, I cannot access the internet.
First thing to do is replace the wireless card with a new one -- if that doesn't solve the problem, it's the card socket that's faulty -- which will require a replacement mainboard.http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19984921
I am attempting to make serviceable a Dell Inspiron laptop for a local charity It was purchased at a car boot sale for US forum members it's a bit like a large public garage sale and I have no idea of its history I have restored the factory image from the recovery partition and once booted up the laptop seems to work well Some of the front lights never come on and the touchpad buttons do not work so it isn't perfect but these problems are not important in use However the laptop almost always takes two attempts before it will boot up The first attempt very quickly gets past the Dell splash screen and then there is a horizontal progress bar and two Dell Inspiron takes attempts nearlyalways start to the words quot microsoft corporation quot The progress bar never stops but having done a forced shutdown and restart I get a screen offering me the option of a repair or a normal startup The repair option takes a long time but ends by saying that a startup repair could not be done Selecting a normal startup usually achieves this Dell Inspiron nearlyalways takes two attempts to start and subsequent startups soon afterwards also work properly After an hour or more the problem returns This is my first experience of Vista as I am said very quietly an Apple man so any suggestions as to what I can do to identify or fix the cause of this problem would be appreciatedhttp://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/304194-dell-inspiron-nearlyalways-takes-two-attempts-start.html
I have a Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop and everytime I turn it on, NOTHING comes up on my desktop except the desktop picture. No startup menu, no icons, nothing. I called dell and since my warranty just expired they can't help me. I don't have the disks to reboot the entire thing. I don't mind loosing my files since I have them backed up. Can anyone help me out?
Thanks a ton,
OK. try this:
Press ctrl+alt+del to open up task manager
find new task and type in "explorer.exe" without the quotes.
I just purchased dell inspiron 15r 5559 with i7 Core processor, 16 GB Ram, 2 TB Hardisk and 4 GB Amd Graphic Card. I did not even install any applications yet, haven't started any loaded work that i bought it for. I am really irritated and frustrated, even after putting so much of money i cannot get a good fast laptop?
I have 2 TB hardisk and transferred 500 GB data from my old laptop. Scanned all data for viruses or malwares, none found.
Please help me out to find the problem, i am going to get it replaced anyway. I just bought it 3 hours ago. I am thinking maybe someone from dell community can help me out if its a common problem.
I'd suggest you disable McAfee and some of the programs in Startup(Task manager). Please follow steps below; I'm assuming windows 10 is on your system.....
1. At the left bottom of taskbar, right click windows logo, and then click on Task Manager.
2. Click 'Startup', and then disable McAfee and any other unnecessary programs that you don't need in your startup.
We bought a low end Dell Inspiron B130 notebook running XP that only came with a 90 day warranty. Sure enough, soon after that 90 days expired, the computer stopped working. It was being used during a storm apparently (while I was out of town) and supposedly there was some power outage even that didn't affect the other computers on the same outlets, but just this Dell notebook stopped working.
When started up, the power and harddrive lights flicker on, and the screen lights up, but nothing loads and the screen stays black. Is there some way I could use a boot disk or reload BIOS or reformat the harddrive, or even figure out if the computer is completely fried or can be resurrected? Any help would be really appreciated, as DELL will have nothing to do with me now that the 90 days is up.
Welcome to TSG...
With what you describe that has happened I would suggest t call Dell and ask them where they suggest that you take the computer for repair and that should be a Dell authorized repair center. You never said how many days past the warranty this is and if it isn't too much after the warranty I would talk to a supervisor about the problem.
THis sounds like something went south, east and west all at the same time. I think a repair shop might be the only way out of this. I really hope I am wrong.
If you have the recovery disks and can set the computer to boot to the CD-ROM drive you might want to try doing a repair if that option is in the recovery disk. I also would try to get into safe mode and try to use some of the diagnostics that are used thru there.
hi guys im using a dell inspiron3800 notebook i was on the internet and the screen froze and wouldnt respond so i plugged it out without battery in there was a message saying memory was low bout 10 minutes before this so when i went to turn it back on all that would come on is the led power lights it wouldnt power up so i cahnged the HDD and RAM and stillthe same it was near a strong source of heat before it did this still wont power up i think it could be the cpu thnx in advance for any help ....bonnell
I recently bought Dell Inspiron 2330 AIO Touch with top specs (i7, 2TB,8GB, Win8). Have used it since one month. While browsing web the desktop turned blue saying an error message and that the computer will restart on its own. When it didn't after some time I switched off the mains and restarted it. Now it powers on but even BIOS does not boot or there is no Dell logo also kind of like failed POST while the fan keeps running continuously which used to just run for a second or two when it used to boot normally. It had happened before a couple of times that while watching youtube videos the same error occured but it never failed to restart normally. Kindly help me to resolve this issue.
Try releasing the residual charge from the system. Here are the steps:
Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer including the power supply.
Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.
Reconnect the power supply. Try to restart the computer and check.
If the issue still persists, perform Built In Self-Test (BIST) on power supply. There is a Green LED and BIST Button above the power cord connector. If the LED glows solid green on pressing the button when the system is plugged in to the wall socket the Power Supply Unit is functioning OK.
The power button LED is a bi-color light that indicates the Dell Inspiron One 2330 power state. Please share which state it is in when you try to boot the system:
The system can emit a series of beeps during start-up if the display cannot show errors or problems. These series of beeps, called beep codes identify various problems. Please share if hear any specific patter of beep codes on startup.
Hope this helps. Please share the results. I'll be happy to assist you.
Ok so i just got an old dell inspiron 9300 which had Windows XP sp 2 on it. I wanted to change to Win7 Ultimate 32bit,so i did, everything worked out smoothly until i turned the laptop off and the next morning when i tried to start it up i got an error that read:
Windows Failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click next.
3. Click "repair your computer"
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
Ive tried everything from reinstalling the os to booting from usb, and cd nothing helps i tried the startup repair, but that doesn't seem to help either. I also tried to find a restore point but it doesn't find any.
When you had XP on it did you check to see whether you specifications etc would support Win 7
I have a dell inspiron 1100 that beeps at me continously on boot up. I presss F2 on my keyboard and
the system will go ahead an boot up. I think it might be a little slower that usual when I am in windows
XP but I am a little unsure of that fact.
Any suggestions to repair this problem. Does the computer need a new cmos battery? How do I
change that if needed. Does this computer take a regular desk top cmos battery?
I have my screen broken but I want to install a new windows, is it possible get in to BIOS using this method?http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19996532
Im hearing a severe cranckling noise from my right speaker of dell 15r 5520 laptop wats the issue?
Can anyone help - PC world want to charge me £180 to fix it - that is back up data onto an external hard drive which I would have to buy, then they say I need to buy system recovery disks from Acer - and then I lost the plot!
If they can get to back up the data -how is it they cannot system restore to a month ago?
the lap top will switch on then goes into the sytem start up - then it picks up the probelm, goes through 100% of the fix then starts all overagain. It ios running vista 18 months old. the last time it worked was when someone was on Facebook.
try an boot into safe mode - as it boots tap F8 you should get a menu
see if you can get into safe mode
Backing up the data,
on a good PC with a CD writer and CD
download UBUNTU www.ubuntu.com
now download the ISO
right click on the ISO and burn to CD - to make a bootable CD
put that CD into the faulty machine - see if it will boot up the CD
(you may need to get into the bios of the PC , using F2 or Del key to get into setup bios - which key to use should come on the screen as you boot , you then need to change the boot order to boot CD first )
Now on booting the UBUNTU cd you should get a menu which says run from CD DO NOT install
if that runs - you should be able to see your windows harddrive - and with a USB harddrive installed - copy any data over
I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 which is now refusing to start at all. When I plug in the power, the orange battery light on the front edge flashes continuously. If I press the power button, the fan starts up, but I am getting nothing on the screen and no other lights at all.
Situation the same whether battery attached or not.
Any suggestions on how to proceed would be gratefully received.
Im going to guess a failed battery, power supply problem, or a bad motherboard. The battery will be easy to replace the other ones may or may not be easily fixable.
I have a Dell Inspiron that won't start. It says it is missing its operating system.
Using the Windows 7 DVD that came with the machine I went through the repair Windows procedure 3 times. The first time it searched for restore points of which there are none because the machine has Rollback Rx installed instead. It then restarted with no change. I went through the same process but this time it said it had repaired Windows however; restarting gave me the same missing OS message. On the 3rd attempt it displayed the restored OS as being on D:\. I ran the diagnostic tool and it said no errors were found. Restarting gave the same error.
How can I get the machine to boot from D:\ or move the OS back to C:\ please?
How did that happened? Did you format your hard drive or something? How many drives do you have maybe its installed on another one.
If all else fails the only thing left to do is to do a system recovery or factory restore, if you are looking for a clean start then follow this guide: Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
My Dell inspiron 6000 laptop stopped working. It shut off while I was online and when I try to restart it, it goes to the start up screen (black, says dell in blue letters) then the whole screen goes black and stays that way. I left for an hour and came back and the screen was still black. I have held the power button down until it restarts and that didn't work, I have pressed ctrl+alt+del and that didn't do anything either. I have also run a diagnostics test and everything passed. I have run out of things to try. Can anyone help me?
