Installer crashes Task Manager and Explorer

Q: Installer crashes Task Manager and Explorer

I am having a problem when I attempt to run a downloaded installer. After downloading an installer for a game, when I run the installer, instead of installing the game, my Task Manager and Windows Explorer freeze. Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix it.
Thank you

Preferred Solution: Installer crashes Task Manager and Explorer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Installer crashes Task Manager and Explorer

Check Resource Monitor - does CPU, RAM, HDD, etc... pin at 100%?
START | type perfmon /res

Also check -

1. WERCON -
START | type view | "View all Problem Reports" | 2x-click on line item for additional crash info

2. Reliability Monitor -
START | type perfmon /rel

3. Event Viewer -
START | type eventvwr.msc | Custom Views | Administrative Events

Hello I have been having trouble for a couple weeks with Firefox Every so often Firefox will hang and cause a total system freeze for a short period of time Sometimes this can cause explorer to crash too other times if for example I was watching a YouTube video or a Twitch stream I get a message saying the crashes/hangs Firefox computer, Task constantly Manager Explorer freezes shockwave plugin is not responding This would then again cause an entire system lock up I would then begin to attempt to open up task manager with the Ctrl Shift Esc combination On my computer it would always instantaneously open up During these experiences Firefox freezes computer, Explorer Task Manager constantly crashes/hangs it does not show up at all So I would then attempt to right click the taskbar to open Task Manager from the options there The taskbar as I'm assuming explorer was still hung would not respond for a couple minutes until finally the menu pops up I would then select Task Manager After a short while maybe seconds Task Manager would finally show up It is here that I would see that there are two Task Manager processes So I would attempt to kill one I would select the one that was kb which I'm assuming is the one that hasn't shown up yet as the other one had kb This would be in vain as attempting to kill most processes was also in vain So I started a round of anti virus and malware checks I originally started with an Avast boot time scan I received an error of I looked into this and it seems as though Avast was failing to scan an archived file After this completed scanning I started a whole system scan in Avast during full boot It gave me a minor PUP discovery After quarantining the file Avast was done Being a thorough person I from there used Malwarebytes This whole system scan gave me another minor threats which it as well quarantined I still have had issues since The latest occurrences have been with Firefox still Malwarebytes and Firefox freezes computer, Explorer Task Manager constantly crashes/hangs a specific video game I like to play Killing Floor Firstly Firefox now does not load up websites correctly basically it seems like only the text shows up It still has the shockwave plugin issue Now the Malwarebytes issue Last night I decided to run another scan When it started Malwarebytes completely froze up and was unresponsive for a couple minutes It then came back and said it could not load the DDA driver I researched this as well and it says it could be possible due to conflicting Antivirus scanners As I had nothing else running I was a little concerned So I restarted my computer as instructed by Malwarebytes and it never automatically came back up as stated as well Finally the most minor issue is with Killing Floor No matter what servers I connect too whether the ping is or my connection ping is unbearable Roughly - ping While not being able to play this is a nuisance I'm more afraid my computer might be spreading malware to these servers so I have thusly not opened it since I'm really sorry about how lengthy the post was like I said above I am just very thorough and attempt to give as much detail so as to help I appreciate all the help I receive Andrew DDS Log DDS Ver - - - NTFS AMD Internet Explorer BrowserJavaVersion Run by Andrew at on - - Microsoft Windows Home Premium GMT - AV Panda Cloud Antivirus Enabled Updated B-FDAA-FFFD- C - BB D C AV avast Antivirus Enabled Updated AD D -BA - C - - A AD B SP Panda Cloud Antivirus Enabled Updated F EF-DB -F - C - C CD SP Windows Defender Enabled Updated D DDC A- F- fae- E -DA C ACF SP avast Antivirus Enabled Updated ACCC CA - C - C - B -AFE D E FW Panda Cloud Firewall Disabled C DF E-B C -FEA - D D-D D FW avast Antivirus Disabled F FC -F D- D E- A E- DA C EAF Running Processes C Windows system lsm exe C Windows system svchost exe -k DcomLaunch C Windows system svchost exe -k RPCSS C Windows System svchost exe -k LocalServiceNetworkRestricted C Windows System svchost exe -k LocalSyste... Hello I have been having some issues for the last couple of days with my computer I first experienced trouble with Firefox while watch a simple Twitch Stream For no reason as the computer was completely idle save the stream I received a message saying Shockwave Player or some script on the crashes/hangs Firefox constantly Task Manager Explorer freezes computer, Moved* page stopped responding The popup gave me the option to wait for the script to respond or to kill it I attempted to kill it by opening up Task Manager This took maybe minutes to open up while in the process hung my entire system the whole time and then Firefox freezes computer, Explorer Task Manager constantly crashes/hangs Moved* led to Firefox itself to completely lock up As well when attempting to open up Task Manager in the first place if at first Firefox freezes computer, Explorer Task Manager constantly crashes/hangs Moved* the window did not show up I would attempt to open Firefox freezes computer, Explorer Task Manager constantly crashes/hangs Moved* it again The first time by using the Ctrl Shift Escape combination and when that was unsuccessful as it normally pops up instantly I would thusly right click the taskbar to open it that way By doing this method it would take minutes for the popup from the taskbar itself to showup After finally getting Task Manager open I would see two different Task Manager processes One at roughly k kilobytes of memory while the other As someone with a tiny bit of OCD I would close the smaller kilobyte one by right clicking it to kill the process from the popup menu Right clicking the process would give me no window nor would hitting kill process from the tab on the Task Manager window itself do anything So from there I started my virus scanners At first I performed an Avast boot time scan that gave me an error I researched into this and it apparently is Avast not able to access a file in side an archive So when the system fully booted up I ran the normal Avast full system scan which gave me threat A minor one Then I ran a MalwareBytes full system scan which gave me threats These were both quarantined Still I had issues So I decided to try the Panda Cloud scanner as I was told it could scan run without interfering with Avast as it was on the cloud This as well gave me threats which it says it fixed I still am having issues with my computer nothing has changed So I decided then to do a HijackThis scan to get a log I was hoping if it were possible for me to receive help on understanding what issues I have and interpret my log I appreciate any help I receive Thanks Andrew Edit I'm really sorry I realized I posted this in the wrong forum I do apologize for this

my roommate has been having problems with her computer. i installed zone alarm security suite on her computer and have done numerous scans. but when she crtl-alt-deletes it says "task manger has been disabled by your administrator" (admin has not disabled it though) and when she opens a shortcut or an application it says "adobe installer" something or other and "installs" something. I've tried finding out what it was but if i can't get in task manger to see what process' are running when the "adobe" comes up i don't think i can figure out where it's running from. any help is appreciated. thank you.

How long has this issue beein going on?What programs do you have running at startup? Have you tried disabling with a startup manager, then re-enabling one at a time?Have you tried using System Restore or System Restore from a command prompt in Safe Mode to return to a previous state before your problems began?

Is this bad? Can it be fixed? Nothing else appears to be affected, unless this is what's causing my headaches with Kaspersky closing on its own. I'm already working with Kaspersky support. Please let's not get sidetracked.

Not even from Task Manager system Ran it again and nothing is found I ve run Combo-Fix and it too cleaned some things I ve googled the problem and found several forums saying to edit the registry and remove the Explorer exe from the HKEY LOCAL MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows NT CurrentVersion Image Files Execution Options however these folder is not there Others have said that doing this resolves it but I don t have it there to remove I ve tried a repair but Explorer.exe will not run. Not even from Task Manager keep getting a reg entry point msdart dll error during the repair I ve tried installing SP but get a similiar error I ve tried running System Restore from the command prompt but I get an error there as well Trying to do all I can before I reformat the drive Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hey all I have had an issue with my custom build computer for a couple of years now but I haven t had a chance to work on it for a very long time I m now looking to remedy the issue which is as follows when I boot up my computer Windows XP Pro loads up not Manager) Explorer.exe Task loading (No and automatically logs me in to my user account like normal it s the only one on the computer The background is the only thing that loads up Explorer.exe not loading (No Task Manager) no icons taskbar etc Obviously this is an issue with the explorer exe not loading properly But unlike most threads I ve found online I am unable to pull up the Task Manager by pressing ctrl alt del or ctrl shift esc I can t do anything other than move my mouse around After about a minute or so it will just log me off and take me to the screen where I can pick which user to log on as If I click my user account it will start to log me on then just as it starts to log on it instantly logs back off and goes back to the screen where I can pick the user account again It will keep doing this without fail If I try logging on in any of the Safe Modes it takes me first to the screen where I can pick between either logging in as Administrator or my normal account No matter which account I choose it will do the same thing of trying to log me on then immediately logging back off The issue originally began when I was running my spyware like I normally have before I honestly can t remember which program it was exactly because this happened almost four years ago It detected a couple of threats and deleted them as recommended After being deleted that is when explorer exe was not loading properly However when the problem first started I was able to load the Task Manager and it was not being force logged off The problem progressed to what it is now fairly soon after the initial problem began Basically the only things that I can access now are the Recovery Console and BIOS setup So here I am posing my problem to you all looking for a possible solution Let me know what you all think I can do to fix this problem or any other information you would like for me to provide

I was running BitDefender, and the day before, it had already deleted explorer.exe. But my computer was still working. I just had to use Task Manager to open programs. Today, whole running BitDefender, I was looking on the internet for a way to download another explorer.exe, and I found a zip file and downloaded it. BUT I can't unzip it without explorer.exe. And while scanning, BitDefender must have deleted my Task Manager. Now, when I start my computer, I have nothing! No taskbar, start menu, icons, anything! Just wallpaper. And when I control-alt-delete, I get the menu, but when I choose Task Manager, nothing happens Can somebody help me? Please?

A:No Explorer.exe, no task manager, just wallpaper

Take youre XP cd and go to youre friend for some PC time
Downolad Uniextractor you will need it
Download BartPE
On youre XP cd in the i386 folder find explorer.ex_ and taskmgr.ex_
Use Uniextractor to expand these
Put them on youre flash drive
Use BartPE to make a LiveCD form XP
Boot the LiveXP
Replace the old explorer and taskmanager

P.S.
You probably have some nasty virus corrupting youre files
After you succesfuly boot youre PC, burn everything you need and do a complete format on the PC as soon as you can

So sometimes on my XP machines, explorer.exe will stop working, in which case I bring up the task manager, kill the process, and then run the process again, and then it's fixed. In Vista, however, if explorer.exe dies (can't use start bar), it seems as if nothing can be done. You bring up the task manager, and the window just sits there. When I try to click on anything in the process list, I can't. Does anyone know a work-around? This would be a massive design flaw if there is nothing that can be done.

Im having problems with my Windows XP
Firstly, I cant start task manager
Secondly, explorer doesn't start.

I can't run any progams. The only thing I can do Is go onto the Internet.
How can I fix this?

I can only run the internet because it pops up whenever my computer starts.

A:Task Manager and Explorer Problem.

Hi SomethingsWrong and welcome to TSF

Try booting in "last good configuration" or similar words. That might work.
If not, boot in safe mode and see will work there. If so, the problem is in the files that load during a normal boot. Turning off unrequired applications in msconfig might pinpoint the problem.
If not, try safe mode with command prompt. From there, you can run chkdsk /p and see if finds and repairs any problems.

If none of that works or you need further instsructions, post back.

Hope this helps,
Mack1

Hi. I'm on windows XP sp3 and just finished fixing a UACd.sys virus infection with ComboFix, which seems to have worked.

But I notice that the size of explorer.exe in Task Manager seems unusually large. It shows a 'mem usage' of 61,696 K and a 'vm size' of 46,572.

What contributes to the size of explorer.exe?
What size is considered normal?
How can I reduce the size (if it is in fact too large?)?

Thanks, John

I read the tutorial on Task Manager by Lawrence Abrams, a very good tutorial. I have questions:

When in Task Manager or if I'm running Process Explorer and happen to have Torch up, I notice multiple listings on either one of these tools for torch.exe. Is this suppose to be and if so why? If its not suppose to happen what makes it happen and what can I do?

When I right click on Process Name in Task Manager I don't get a properties choice in the pop up box. I'm running windows xp sp3 media center edition 2002.

Where can I learn more about processes?

Thanks for any help.

A:Task Manager and Process Explorer

Torch Browser is based on the Chromium technology platform. When using Chrome there are multiple copies of chrome.exe which show in task manager. This is intentional by designed as a crash control. Each tab is treated as it's own individual process for the life of the tab...meaning it is treated as a separate process so that multiple tabs can run with less problems. In the event of a browser crash or hand in one tab, this feature prevents the entire browser from closing down. I have never used Torch but since it is based on Google Chrome, I suspect torch.exe is performing the same function. Most of the processes in Windows Task Manager will be legitimate as shown in these links.List of common system processes found in Task ManagerCommon system processes found in Task ManagerWindows Task Manager does not provide enough information so I prefer to use third party tools such as Process Explorer to investigate running processes, programs that run at startup, and services. System Explorer - System Explorer Portable is another good alternative. It provides a security check of running processing using their online security database when you first launch the program. Just press the Security Scan tab at the top, then click Start Security Check. After the check you can click the link to See the results of the security check >>. Keep in mind, that the check is not a guarantee of what is or is not detected as malware. You can also perform searches on the following databases::BC's Startup Programs DatabaseBC's File Database IndesSystemLookupProcessLibrary.comFile Research Center

Have 3 explorers.exe running in task manager internet explorer.exe and explorer.exe . had 3 running at ounce and all the forums so far have not come up with anything to fix this problem . Found Windows Exlplorer is in beded in the OS and went to Add and Remove and side bar left side and click on Add and Remove Windows Components wizard and removed check mark in Windows Explorer and this removed IE8 to Ie7 and then removed IE7 and it reverts to IE 6 and got rid of 3rd Explorer running in Task manager . Tried over 6 different spyware and malware programs, alll say OS is Ok . So how do you fix XP OS when 2 to 3 Explorers are running and CPU is maxed out at 100% ??

Hello TechGuys,
I have this problem that whenever I login to WinXP SP2, my explorer won't start - that is my task bar and my desktop icons won't show. I thought I could start it using Task Manager but when I press Ctrl+Alt+Del it says that I don't have access permission and to contact Administrator, but I am the Administrator. I am thinking that access to my registry is disabled too, but I can't check it because I don't have access to Explorer or Task Manager.
My belief is that a virns or trojan of some sort has changed my registry. I will try to boot in safe-mode and see what happens.
Please help.

Hello SRB, and welcome to Seven Forums.

This is normal when new explorer windows open as a separate process. When they are closed, the extra explorer.exe process should end as well in Task Manager a few moments later.

This may not be internet explorer. you may have a malware problem (the behaviour you describe sounds somewhat like something i had a while ago).

if you haven't yet checked for malware read this thread and follow the instructions: http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...oval-help.html

Can access Task Manager and get to files that way but no way to activate desktop. What has happened here? Also, nothing on desktop when I go into SafeMode. Thank you

So about two days I found that for some reason my computer was going really slow out of no where. I eventually checked the task manger and saw about 4 explorer.exe process and one was taking up almost 2 gig of my ram

I first thought it saw a virus so I scanned with malwarebytes and then avg but not really was showing up. I then thought maybe my hard drive was going bad but I did hard drive scans and all the scan can out good.

When I end all explorer.exe process my computer works perfectly but doesn't have the desktop.

Hello everybody,

When I start up my computer I can open Task manager, and see that there are several instances on internet explorer running.  Nothing displays on my screen however, and I cannot get the instances of IE to open.
The websites they open to are all gambling sites or obscure search sites.
I close the programs in Task manager but they instantly re-open themselves and go to another site.

I have run Malware bytes and it has come up empty.
Please help!

On all the profiles (5 total) explorer.exe doesn't automatically run when i start up the computer and I have to go to the task manager, start new task and type in explorer. On my profile when i try to start the task manager it says that it has been disabled by the administrator. I have slaved the hard drive with another and ran symantec antivirus and it quarantined alot of adware and some viruses. Normally i would just reformat and start over but there are some pictures my wife took of her family in Honduras and some of them are no longer alive and i really need to get to them. I dont care if the problem gets fixed if there is a way to access the pictures from one of the other profiles but when i tried it said access denied. Really need help and fast.

Why don't you access the pictures from the computer that you've slaved the drive to. Just drill down through the slaved drive into Docs and Settings -> <username> -> My docs -> My pics and then copy them over to your hard drive.

A:Extra Internet explorer in task manager

It's normal to have two iexplore.exe processes reflected in Taask Manager...when there is one IE window open.
For every additional window opened...another process appeaars.
If I have 5 windows open...my Task Manager should reflect 6 instances of iexplore.exe.
Just make sure that they all read "iexplore.exe" since "iexplorer.exe" is malware.

I'm sure there must be a discussion already in existence but I can't find it Please don't tell me off for being a reactionary but the fact that I am now landed with an OS is almost devastating to me I've made a start at making Manager? Explorer and Windows 8.1's to Alternatives Task it bearable to use by installing Start and did something else that can't remember what so that booting up lands me on desktop very quickly Also I discovered that Dell have reversed the default behaviour for the Fn keys they're set to 'multimedia' so that they cannot be used as shortcut keys by third-party software Fortunately that was easily changeable in Control Panel once you knew what had been done and where to find the setting I wonder if this is now common in touchscreen laptops Alternatives to 8.1's Windows Explorer and Task Manager? I need advice on these two issues My Windows Explorer's left panel is a complete mess with all sorts jumbled together under 'This PC' instead of merely expanding into the drives and partitions that are physically on 'This PC' with everything else like TVs PVRs and other networked gadgets Alternatives to 8.1's Windows Explorer and Task Manager? showing separately I also find the so-called quot ribbon quot navigation and settings less straightforward I don't want an Alternatives to 8.1's Windows Explorer and Task Manager? Explorer replacement with bells and whistles just one that looks organised and whose menus are easily accessible One exactly like 's would be perfect Task Manager in only shows running programs in its small interface and to see processes etc it has to become much larger therefore interfering with things on my screen that I don't want covered up Is there a compact replacement close to 's version Thanks for any advice

A:Alternatives to 8.1's Windows Explorer and Task Manager?

The only alternative to Task Manger is Process Explorer. But you end up loosing a lot of features. Windows Explorer is built into Internet Explorer, so you cannot just up and remove it or disable it.

As for the small interface for Task Manager, that is on if you leave it in "Show Fewer Details". Windows Explorer Left pane options are the same way as you handled them in Windows 7. The Ribbon will not go away. You can minimize it. The Ribbon is actually more efficient than the old way that Microsoft had their menu items. As for the Function Key behavior, they went to the old Mainframe way, that you had Function Keys and PF keys. So that you had the use of 24 Function keys. Basically when set to just press the Function key or go Fn and Function key, it is just a reversal of which is the primary order of use, by user's choice. That can be changed in the Bios for all OEM machines. It is a permanent part of the UEFI bios.

Really you are not going to get much pity on this, because the mass majority is soon to be moving away from 8 to 10.

Topic title explains it all, for some reason, explorer.exe fails to start even when I try to do it through task manager. An error just pops up saying, "explorer.exe - Unable To Locate Component 'This application has failed to start because (square symbol).dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.'"

This is all after I used windows update (this is a fairly old/backup computer, other good one is in for repairs). I was on the "Windows SP2" update, it kinda failed to do anything towards the end, and it canceled. Related?

Hi all,

Im new to the site and hoping someone can help me with this problem. I ran a scan on my laptop with AVG antivirus and accidently selected delete all unhealed problems. I wasnt paying attention when i did it but im sure ive deleted explorer.exe and a bunch of other essential files.

Now when i boot up normally and try to login the computer instantly logs back out again, and when i boot in safe mode only the background appears and i cant access the task manager. To add to the complications my internal cd drive is broken so i cant use a boot cd and there is no floppy drive.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

So about two days I found that for some reason my computer was going really slow out of no where. I eventually checked the task manger and saw about 4 explorer.exe process and one was taking up almost 2 gig of my ram

I first thought it saw a virus so I scanned with malwarebytes and then avg but not really was showing up. I then thought maybe my hard drive was going bad but I did hard drive scans and all the scan can out good.

When I end all explorer.exe process my computer works perfectly but doesn't have the desktop.

alrighty, here's what's happening. theres a folder with a ton of music in it that I created for the sole purpose of gathering it all in one place. now, when you rollover the folder icon, double click it, explore it, search it, open it, etc, you get the send/dont-send windows error and explorer crashes and restarts when you click dont-send.

Obviously very frustrating, no? All I can do is move the folder's location. Can not copy. It never shows the folder's contents, always crashes JUST before it shows, tries to copy, search, etc. Any ideas?

thanks very very very very much.

I'm not very tech-savvy when it comes to systems and such, so here goes...

So I'm in My Documents or any folder, really, and I right-click on an item to delete or copy it. Then, my computer freezes up [background is unresponsive, start-menu and taskbar not working], but my mouse still moves. I try and open up my Task Manager, but it says that it's "been disabled by the Administrator" or something like that. So at that moment, I'm forced to restart my computer.

I did two virus scans over the past two days, and I found trojans called "W32/Sality!mem". It's infected the explorer and DISABLETASKMGR, and many other programs. The scanner [Mc-Afee] deletes/cleans it, so I expected for the problem to be gone. But it's still annoying me! Any help out there?

A:Task Manager is disabled. Windows Explorer is unresponsive.

If you know exactly when the issue started occurring i would do a system restore to right before it happened and even tho mcafee said it cleaned it is it still on your system

A:New Win32,New Malware - win explorer,task manager disabled

Hi, welcome to TSF!

You have an interesting one.. Haven't seen these buggers for quite sometime..

You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:
Kaspersky
AVG7
McAfee

Disable one of your Anti Virus programs.

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

Please disable 2 so they do not conflict.
______

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.
______

Download combofix.exe

1. Save it to your desktop.
2. Make sure you save and close ALL open windows and programs that you are running in the taskbar as combofix will attempt to end all non-windows processes for a faster and more successful cleaning.

Click start > run > copy and paste:

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Note:In case you already used Combofix previously, please delete the version you are having and redownload it again, because Combofix is being updated everyday.
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
Do not post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.
If your Antivirus software is detecting combofix or a part of it as a virus, please choose to ignore it as Antivirus products cannot determine the good/bad use of some softwares embedded in combofix.
______

Please click Here to download HijackThis to your desktop.

Click the Download button. When the Trend Micro HJT install box appears, double click on the HJTInstall.exe. Click on Install.

It will be installed by default here: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

A shortcut to the application will also be placed on your Desktop.

The program will open automatically after installation.

You can double-click the icon that was placed on the Desktop to run subsequent HijackThis scans or you can use the icon inside the folder. The folder HijackThis is where you will find the HJT logs that you save. When you use the application to remove anything, you will also find the backup copies made by HJT inside this folder.

Click on "Do a system scan and save logfile" When the log pops up in Notepad, copy and paste that file back here.
On your next reply, please include aFresh HijackThis log.

You probably have been zapped with mailware or viruses but

CTRL+SHIFT+ESC: Opens Windows Task then you could try system restore.

Uh oh! In an attempt to solve a problem with an MS Office document, I went into Task Manager/Processes and closed Explorer.exe. It closed Office, but more importantly, it also closed my whole Desktop Shell!!! Now everything's gone, including my Start Menu and Task Bar. Please help! How can I get it all back ???? Thanks very much!

A:OOOOPS! Closed Explorer.exe in Task Manager. How do I reopen it?

Hit Ctrl + Shift + Esc to bring up the Task Manager.

Then in the Task Manager, click File, New Task (Run...).

Then type:

explorer.exe
Then click "OK."

I am running 64bit windows 7 ultimate and ran the 64bit process explorer and chose to replace the task manager now when I ctrl+alt+del and choose task managaer nothing happens. And when I restart process explorer the only option is to replace task manager not go back to it. How do I go back to having the regular taskmanager? When i have a crash in a game or app and I don't want to shut the system down but end the process sometimes the explorer is gone so I can't navigate folders and the only way to restart it is to use task manager. Unless there's another way I haven't found out yet. Anyway I am going to try and put process explorer into system32 and see if that helps. Thank you for any help

A:Solved: process explorer and task manager problems

solved it. used the 32bit rather than 64bit version to replace task manager and that seemed to do the trick. SO I guess that I don't need help after all. lol

My computer stopped working after getting infected with a virus I used an Ubuntu live CD with avast to delete all the viruses from my system But now every time I start my computer it just shows the background with no taskbar or icons and I can't right click anywhere so I assumed that explorer exe didn't launch so I pressed Ctrl alt delete to try task manager explorer.exe and access Lost to Win7- and start task manager Win7- Lost access to task manager and explorer.exe to start explorer exe but it only gave me the option to lock computer switch user log out or reset password but no task manager Win7- Lost access to task manager and explorer.exe I restarted my computer and chose the repair computer option From there startup repair didn't do anything and the virus erased all my system restore points so the only option left is the command prompt I tried running sfc scannow but it returned an error message saying that a system repair is pending and tells me to restart So I used the command prompt to navigate to the system directory and I didn't find taskmgr exe or explorer exe so I copied them over from another computer with windows using a flash drive but it still didn't work So my situation now is -i can't run task manager to start explorer exe -i can't access explorer exe to try and enable task manager So is there a way to enable task manager from the command prompt Or do I really have to reinstall windows

A:Win7- Lost access to task manager and explorer.exe

SpeedBeast,

Please try the following...

Close all windows.

Press Ctrl Alt Delete (simultaneously).

A screen displays five options. Select: Start Task Manager

In the Task Manager, go to the File menu and select: New Task (Run…)

The Create New Task dialog box appears.

Type “explorer.exe” (without the quotes) in the Open area.
Click: OK

To close the Task Manager, from the File menu, select: Exit Task Manager

If the above does not work, we need to look deeper...

Please plug a USB flash drive into a clean computer.
Go to Start > Computer
Double-click Computer, and select the flash drive.
Right-click and select: Format
Press Start on the Format prompt.
Remove when done.

You may want to print these instructions so you can have access to follow
Also, you may want to read them once before you apply them.

Go to the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool Download
Select the download that applies to your system. (32-bit)
Save the program to the >> USB flash drive.

Next, plug the flash drive into the problem computer.

Start the computer. As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears.
Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
Select your language settings, and click: Next
Select your User account and click: OK (If you did not set a password, leave blank.)
On the System Recovery Options menu you get the following options: Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows Complete PC Restore
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Scan your computer's memory for errors
Command Prompt
Select Command Prompt In the Command window, at the blinking cursor type notepad and press: Enter
In Notepad, under the File menu select: Open
Double-click Computer, find the flash drive letter, remember what letter it is, click on it, and press: Open
Close out of Notepad.
Click the Command window
Type g:\frst.exe, and press: Enter
Note: Replace the drive letter g with the drive letter of your flash drive!
The tool starts and prepares to run. Follow the prompts.
Click Yes to the disclaimer.
Press: Scan
When done, the program saves the FRST.txt report, on the flash drive.

Close Notepad, then, click the Command Prompt window, and type exit, and press: Enter

Back at the System Recovery Options, press: ShutDown.

Remove the USB flash drive from the infected computer, and plug it into the good computer.

Please provide the FRST.txt report, located on the USB flash drive, in your reply.[/

Explorer.exe task access startup. to on running hadn't restarted it in quite some time I went ahead and Explorer.exe not running on startup. No access to task manager. did a full power down Shutdown switched off and d c PSU and then booted everything back up Upon logging back into my account I noticed something was wrong All my desktop icons and taskbar were no longer there Ctrl Alt Del appears to do nothing and the same goes for Ctrl Shift Esc Due to the first set of symptoms I Explorer.exe not running on startup. No access to task manager. suspect that explorer exe is failing to start for some reason Since I do not have access to the task manager I can't confirm this or even attempt to re-launch it I can boot into safe mode just fine While there I hopped into msconfig and disabled some of the unnecessary services as I thought maybe one Explorer.exe not running on startup. No access to task manager. of those might be causing the issue No luck I am still stuck trying to determine the cause of the issue so I can attempt to resolve it I would appreciate some help troubleshooting debugging this as I really don't know where to start Thanks in advanced

A:Explorer.exe not running on startup. No access to task manager.

Have you tired File Check? Here is the link to explain. Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files
BTW, do you have access to the Admin account? If so, you could create a new account.
The Admin account should allow you to try and fix whatever is causing the problem.

Hi Jason,

Welcome to TSF!

This sounds a lot like the Conflicker Virus that was hyped for April 1st, 2009. Microsoft KB962007 details it's implications and removal.

i've been having a lot of virus issues with my computer (windows xp).. when i boot up and log in, all i see is my wallpaper. and i've googled around and most solutions for this involve either using the task manager or downloading some virus scanning program or something.. but my task manager "has been disabled by administrator", and i have no way of accessing the internet or anything else for that matter. i also cannot boot to safe mode, it just restarts my computer until i choose to boot to normal mode again.

is my computer completely done for? i don't really know what i can do at this point.
thanks!

A:explorer.exe won't start; task manager disabled by admin.

How are you posting here? On a borrowed or second machine? Do you have access to a CD burner and USB flash drive? Do you have a Windows XP installation CD? Without these things, I'm afraid the help we can offer is extremely limited. Even with them, it may be that the machine is so badly corrupted that a reinstall/system recovery will be the best solution.

It's normal to have multiple instances of iexplore.exe running.
One for the main program and one for each tabbed page.

Hello Friends

I am currently experiencing consistent restarting (every few seconds) of Windows Explorer on my PC. And this has caused the desktop to be unavailable/inaccessible. I'm desperate . To find out the error which is causing this, I need to access task manager (event viewer), which is also unavailable (greyed out when I right click on the task bar). By accessing the task manager, I hoped to stop the windows explorer process so that I can at least access to my school project. I cannot afford to reload the OS (Win7 Pro) as this will affect my school project.
Kindly offer me your solutions, thank you so much.

Looking forward to your replies.

Regards,
Rid08

A:Windows Explorer keeps restarting, task manager unavailable.

I think a complete Malware scan would be a good starting point. Download Malwarebytes here Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

To follow a system file check is also good type SFC /scannow in the run line at the bottom of the menu. (the space after SFC is deliberate and needed)

Win 2k
Explorer, not IE6, crashing
I'm set up for single clicking. If I move the mouse over a real player(MP3) symbol the explorer shuts down. Then an errormessage says that an error was generated and has to be closed by windows. I've tried to switch default files between Real Player, Win Media and my sftware from Creative Lab and still crashes

any ideas?

Hello,

I've been having an issue with a redirects when clicking on links from google searches. I am also having an issue with Internet Explorer showing as active and using large amounts of memory when I open my task manager. When I close the instances (there are 2 at a time) they reopen almost immediately. I've run Malwarebytes and have found nothing.

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer. NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.I need to get some reports to get a base to start from so I need you to run these programs first.-DeFogger-Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
The application window will appear Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers Click Yes to continue A 'Finished!' message will appear Click OKDeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OKDo not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.-Security Check-Download Security Check by screen317 from here.Save it to your Desktop.Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.-Download DDS-Please download DDS from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

A week ago I reformatted my PC which I built myself it's my rd build after a previous installation's bluescreen issues The fresh install plus a few apps from manager PC and after friend's home bringing task Explorer unusable I Explorer and task manager unusable after bringing PC home from friend's needed have been running fine up until now I brought my PC over to my friend's house it worked just fine Once I got it back home and set it up I'm having a couple issues that are preventing me from using it normally Once Win x SP has booted I'll typically open Firefox no extensions and Thunderbird If I recall right I seem to be able to use those just fine When I go to the desktop and open Recycle Bin only shortcut on there or try Win E to open Explorer nothing happens Win R to open Run CTRL SHIFT ESC to open task manager doesn't work either I may have also had issues opening an app from the start menu with no response as well but can't quite recall Everything functions fine in safe mode which I am writing this in now I did sfc scannow and it found no integrity violations This is a pretty barebones install at the moment with just Avast ATi Catalyst Control Center and Apache HTTPD server being the foremost startup programs services While I would love to get this solved the bigger question is why does this happen when I move my PC from my friends house back home I've had other issues happen with other PC builds before over the years simply from moving them to another location and I take care with the tower I appreciate everyone's time and insight into this

A:Explorer and task manager unusable after bringing PC home from friend's

Well everything seems to be running great after having the system do a boot-time chkdsk /f

I also disabled the Apache HTTPD services startup for now...

But yes I'm still curious why unplugging/moving/setting-up a PC elsewhere can sometimes induce problems not present before.

First off here are specs of my laptop Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version OS Version Microsoft Windows Ultimate bit Processor Intel R Core TM Duo CPU T GHz Intel Family Model Stepping Processor Count RAM Mb Graphics Card NVIDIA Quadro FX M Mb Hard Drives C Total - MB Free - MB E Total - MB Free - MB F Total - MB Free - MB Motherboard Dell Inc V VSC L CN I Antivirus Symantec Endpoint Protection Updated and Enabled Now to the actual problem The reason I bought all this RAM was so that the computer would run faster and more smoothly Despite the large (Task spikes process tremendously Manager, Usage Explorer, low-end for CPU etc.) amount of memory however I still experience frequent spikes in CPU Usage which I have learned is not related to RAM very much if at all Regardless I would still assume that my system wouldn t have to overexert itself to run simple tasks like Windows Explorer i e folders desktop and taskbar or the TASK MANAGER ITSELF Either of these tasks CPU Usage spikes tremendously for low-end process (Task Manager, Explorer, etc.) as well as others CPU Usage spikes tremendously for low-end process (Task Manager, Explorer, etc.) such as CPU Usage spikes tremendously for low-end process (Task Manager, Explorer, etc.) quot System quot quot svchost quot or quot File I O Surrogate quot none of which I know much about can spike to anywhere from - of the CPU without warning and when it does the total CPU Usage ends up being which REALLY makes my laptop sluggish and unresponsive I understand that RAM does not directly impact CPU Usage but I would also assume that since my laptop isn t ancient that its CPU shouldn t struggle to display my folders desktop taskbar or to run the Task Manager itself I also run a daily virus check with Symantec Anti-Virus so I don t think infection is the issue In addition to that I monitor memory usage alongside CPU usage and the memory usage never goes higher than it usually hovers around - or so GB of my available -- insufficient RAM is also probably not the problem Tips suggestions Thank you nbsp

This has been going on for a while I ve done extensive search for this particular problem but have not come across anything like it Can someone please help me trouble shoot I think this problem would be quite interesting to get to the bottom of My specs are XP SP on a HP b Laptop I m checking the other specs atm and just noticed another symptom When I go to sys properties gt general where there would usually be the comp details there is nothing showing for a few minutes Now that it s loaded I see that it is a P GB RAM I m running AVG Ad-Aware and Spybot all running scans throughout the day The first noticeable symptom is during the login screen If I click the user and enter the password within secs there s no issue After that time it takes about mins to bring up the password field after clicking the user Once the logged Task Startup Explorer, - Manager No Slow Weird Issue in startup begins all the auto load programs are loaded very promptly Though anything explorer related start explorer taskbar takes a long time to respond Every other program is Weird Startup Issue - Slow Explorer, No Task Manager fine while these things are delayed It s just a matter of getting to the other programs without explorer functionality Also this is probably the biggest issue task manager is totally non responsive It will load after a min but does not respond I have Google Desktop which has a resource monitor widget and I can see that there is very little load on the comp during all of this I ve tried deselected Google Desktop for load on startup Once an explorer window does load My Computer is searching with the flash light for a few mins On the other hand clicking on the My Documents folder in the left panel brings that up immediately This all stops happening maybe an hour after startup so I try to sleep the comp rather than shutting down as much as I can It s hard to see what else is going on without task manger Any suggestions nbsp

A:Weird Startup Issue - Slow Explorer, No Task Manager

Any error reports in event viewer.
How long do the same things, that do load in Safe Mode, take to load in Safe Mode.
Looking at it from a virus viewpoint, we are of course only looking at AVG. Is it the free edition or the full paid edition.
Has chkdsk reported any errors, particularly bad sectors.

Hi all,

I don't know if this is the appropriate section, but I'm having trouble with my MSN Explorer.

Whenever I try to open the "Download Manager" or try to download something (which automatically opens the Manager), the browser crashes. I can download things using either Firefox or IE and I've had this issue before, found a command somewhere online I could run (using "Run") and that solved the problem. However, I can't seem to find that command (which was on another forum somewhere) and was hoping someone here knew what it is.

Thanks!
Brian

A:MSN Explorer Crashes when opening Download Manager

Any ideas anyone? I know that maybe not many people have/use MSN Explorer but I thought I'd ask anyway here.

I exit out of Internet Explorer window, but iexplore.exe remains in task manager. If I open up Internet Explorer again, then exit out, a second iexplore.exe remains in task managerand so onso I end up with lots of iexplore.exe in task manager, even though all the Internet Explorer windows have been exited.Right now, this is happening with IE version 6, under XP Service Pack 3.This is because I have been trying to resolve another problem that I honed in to be a problem with internet explorer. So, it behaes this way with version 6, if go up to version 7, IE won't exit at all, etc., etc.Underlying problem seems to be multiple occurrences of iexplore.exe in task manager.Takes up memory, ends up slowing down pc, etc., etc.I've run combofix, to no avail.EDIT: Moved from XP to Am I Infected forum ~ Hamluis.

This is a very strange problem indeed, one I have never encountered before!

Seems like all my "lists" in explorer seem to empty themselves within a few seconds...

Effecting my task manager process list, the lists in msconfig, the lists in the 'Local Area Connection Properties' but only disappear if the current window is active.

I thought it would be impossible to explain/understand so I've uploaded a video to YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eICDHNa9fw

As you can see, the task manager re-populates itself constantly so they're disappearing and re-appearing - all very frustrating!

Any help appreciated!

My computer stopped working a few days ago. Every time I start my computer, it showed the black background with no taskbar or icons but has mouse cursor. I search in google and all i saw is the step Ctrl+Alt+Delete so I did it and click the task manager then it gave me an error saying "The application was unable to start(0xc0000022). Click OK to close the application." And I also did the F8 steps but it is still the same, nothing happen. I can't run task manager to start explorer.exe. What should I do? Please somebody help me.

A:Black Screen: Win7 Pro - Lost access to task manager and explorer.exe

Welcome to our forum Raf15.

This is the first thing I would do if it was my computer.

By Brink:
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If you still need help.
Read through these two tutorials by Brink. To me this would be the next easy way if you can do it on your system.

Hello,
I recently have discovered two new problems...
1. When I press Ctrl-Alt-Delete I am given a pop-up that says Task Manager has been disabled by the administrator.
2. At any given time, when I am on the internet... I get a pop-up that says Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and must close... I usually click Don't Send and it closes out my Internet Explorer...

Please help me, thanks in advanced!

A:2 New Problems - Task Manager Disabled and Internest Explorer Encounters Errors

Try the (downloadable) Reg-Fix here:

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Taskmanager_error.htm

There's a very high probability that it was caused by some kind of Malware.

Try the scans at the top of this page.......

and maybe follow up by posting a "HijackThis" log here (lots of help and info in the above thread).
