Faulty CD Drives

Q: Faulty CD Drives

Hi

Right, here we go.
I have 2 optical drives D: DVD Rom E: CD/RW both of them don't work. The trays come out.... they go back in... but the PC tells me there is no disc in the drive(s). I've checked drivers etc but everything comes up OK.
Now to the strange stuff. A week ago my PC PSU started rattling then one evening an almighty clatter and my PSU unit got very hot. I yanked the power cord out, gave it a while and on start up everything was OK. Could the PSU fault cause my Optical problems? Help Me !! PPPLLLlleasee help me!! :hotouch:
Thanks for any help

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Faulty CD Drives

Yes it could.

Try your drives in another computer just in case.

I believe drivers? faulty BSOD 116 card or graphics faulty the initial crash was caused by overheating Based on the fact that I have gotten it to work for a short amount of time more on that later Booting up with the drivers for my graphics card enabled causes BSOD to appear but when it is disabled everything is fine I can boot into safe mode and I have already reinstalled windows My motherboard is Asus B M-e and my graphics card is Nvidia EV A GTX How I got it to work for a short amount of time I reinstalled windows and then installed my integrated Ethernet driver After that was out of the way I installed and used driver booster to install the rest of my drivers I then noticed there was a missing driver that the program could not install that was named Simple PCI Controller So I thought I should install that driver using my motherboard's driver installation disk It then worked up until I decided to change the settings in Nvidia Control panel I also do not know how faulty graphics cards behave so it might be my graphics card The game I was playing when this started was Life is Strange if that is needed

Sorry card? Solved: Faulty graphics Or motherboard? faulty that this is quite long but I want to give complete details as to the problem rather than just giving a vague problem Nvidia GT card has been overclocked for the last year Original Stable OC Before Solved: Faulty graphics card? Or faulty motherboard? you panic Solved: Faulty graphics card? Or faulty motherboard? it s been stable and temps have been fine lt My motherboard is a Asus P N-E SLI board The computer is dual boot to Vista for general use and XP x for games ONLY XP IS OVERCLOCKED Vista is not overclocked at all Only the GPU is overclocked in the computer Now the problems started when I moved the computer All the games on x crashed unless I underclocked the machine except UT ancient game which garbled the graphics weapon textures on walls etc I found out it was because somehow the card wasn t plugged in properly - so I pushed it back and I was able to play again Since then sometimes the card is alright and other times it isn t The other day I was playing fallout graphics intensive game for around hours without any problems But right now I boot to vista and within a minute it crashes Other times I was programming not even using graphics and the mouse suddenly has a flickering box around it - then the computer crashes When it crashes the screen goes weird colours like its rendered the screen as bit colours rather than bit and shortly after I get a blue screen with it complaining about a graphics DLL At first giving the card a wiggle in the PCI-E slot fixed it Now I ve discovered that when the garbled graphics come up if I physically push the card upwards in the PCI-E slot whilst the PC is still on they go away by this time the computer has crashed amp so I have to reboot anyway It s nothing to do with the drivers I ve reinstalled them on XP and besides the problem happens on both of the OS on the computer Vista seems to be considerably worse though - XP only crashes once in a while whereas Vista seems to be more unstable If you push the card up quickly sometimes Vista quot recovers quot It says quot the display ddriver stopped responding and has recovered quot or something like that You can then use the computer normally If I push the card down when the computer is working fine the computer crashes Any suggestions whether it s the card or the motherboard I removed the card blew dust off it etc put it back into the machine and the problem still happens although it initially solved it I don t want to spend on a new card to find that it s the MB that s the problem I m wondering if the card is fine since it doesn t have an issue with hours of gaming on a good day If it s a lose connection what can I do about it it s fully pushed into the motherboard If you ve read this far thanks nbsp

Hi,
I recently bought a new, 3rd party power cord for my Toshiba Satellite L300 from eBay.
Recently I've noticed that my battery stops charging earlier and earlier. At first it stopped at 87%, then 83%, then 80% all in one week. I've had the computer for about a year which seems a bit early for it to start degrading so fast, so could it be the power cord?

The Toshiba cord says Model: PA-1750-29, Input: 100-240V~ 50-60Hz 1.5A, Output: 19V[solid line above a dotted line]3.95A
The 3rd party cord says Model: PA-34671ACA, Input: 100-240V~1.5A 50/60Hz, Output: 19V[solid over dotted]3.95A

If the new cord is harmful to my battery, I can just solder its input plug onto the Toshiba charger (that's the only bit that was broken) but I'd rather not risk breaking two power cords if I don't need to.

Thanks,
Marlon

Two times in the last week my monitor (a KDS visual sensations CRT) has come on with the image looking like an hourglass (wide at the top and bottom, pinched in the center). This happened imediately upon boot up and both times rebooting has returned the monitor to normal, leaving the computer running does not bring the problem back. Which is more likely, that my monitor is beginning to fail or maybe my graphics card (a saphire, ATI radeon 7000) is failing? Is there some way (other than swaping my monitor out and trying another as this seems so far to be an intermitent problem and may not arise when a new monitor is conected) to check and see which it may be?

So I bought this external 40 gig drive a while back and it turned out it was actually a pair of 20 gig drives. my itunes library has just reached the capacity of the device and it won't let me add anything else as long as i'm consolidating things onto the drive, which i would like to keep doing to save disk space on my actual PC. is there a way i can either merge the 2 drives or set itunes so that it splits the library between the drives? thanks!

A:Splitting Consolidated iTunes library over 2 external drives? (merging drives!?)

Don't know much about Itunes other than it's very restrictive about moving tunes. I've read a lot of good things about SharePod that sounds like you can do most anything you would want and still use itunes

I was wondering what the best way to make sure your external drive is functioning as it should?

Also, how much damage is done if your drive loses power abruptly?

Also, why would someone want a larger drive that needs an additional power source compared to a portable drive?

I am having some frustrating trouble with my CD drives currently I m afraid what follows is an ineloquent description of the symptoms my system is experiencing as I haven t any clue what the read; time no drives drives longer if CD are long closed start-up direct problem CD drives no longer read; long start-up time if drives are closed is I would truly appreciate some help I have a CD drive for reading and a seperate drive for burning The burning drive won t recognize any CD - blank or with content The reading drive still can read audio CDs but only in a round-about way I am on Windows XP I ve had both drives for a few years They both worked perfectly up until last week Both drives still open and close More curiously if either drive is closed when I am rebooting my computer I get at least minutes of a blank screen before my Window log-in screen appears The log-in page will load immediately if I then open both drives or if I open them during the reboot but before I get the long delay screen When I click on the reading drive through quot My Computer quot I get an error message saying that there s no associated file type for the drive However if I put an audio CD in that drive I can still access the music through iTunes and WinAmp both programs I ve had unchanged for years The burning drive won t recognize any CD period blank or otherwise It therefor doesn t burn either My own unsuccessful troubleshooting I have a recent Symantec virus scanning program that is completely updated It can find no viruses on my system I uninstalled the burning drive thinking perhaps the drivers were corrupted but when Windows automatically reinstalled the drive after restarting the computer the problem persists I ve been all through the Device Manager to make sure the proper preferences are turned on I believe I know that the drives aren t physically damaged and are connected properly to the harddrive The only thing that I can think of that may have caused this was a recent program installation I installed MaxMSP for a course I am taking However the msi install file wouldn t load with my computer and so I download a WGAPlugin from the Windows website so I could view the file It didn t work I figured out I could read the msi file through Internet Explorer later on and was then able to install the program I can t recall if I have burned a CD after that installation but I don t believe I have I am at a loss and the end of my limited knowledge of what I can do to troubleshoot on my own Could the registry files be damaged Is it the drivers A virus that I can t find PLEASE HELP nbsp

I am running Windows XP SP3 right now on a Lenovo 7650-ELU and experiencing some odd problems. For some reason, the laptop I have will not recognize USB Flash Drives that I put into it or External Hard Drives. I know that the USB ports work correctly, because I have plugged in optical mouses and keyboards that work. I searched the forums and didn't see anything like this.

It's odd how when I first insert them, it makes the sound and shows the icon in the taskbar that would allow me to safely remove the device, but nothing else. So far, I have gone into the device manager and uninstalled all the USB ports and restarted hoping this would solve my problem, but it continues to do the same thing.

If anyone has some helpful advise, please post. I appreciate all the help.

Cheers!

Hey.

When I start up my PC everything goes very slowly, things "chops" or lagged as most say.

It comes up a menu that says:

Detecting drives; Done, No Drives Found.

-

Have tried most but I find no solutions to this problem, if there is anyone who knows anything about this or can help me, please comment on what I should do.

Thank you!

When I get into the desktop, everything quickly, and I have no problems there ..

What could it be?

A:Detecting drives; Done, No Drives Found - Error and Slow startup

That message would indicate that you have an add on card installed inside your desktop PC that adds SATA ports.

Do you?

Mind you, without your System Specs I am just stabbing in the dark.

A:Faulty cpu or the mb?

Go back to the most basic setup you can imagine...
One memory module, one video connection, and a cd or a simple hard drive... or an external floppy drive with a Windows 98 disk.
Attempt a boot.
If no boot, change to the other memory module. Attempt another boot.

The idea is to try various simple boots, and avoid using the hard drive if you can... use a different hard drive known good with Windows 95 or windows 98 installed... or boot to a floppy boot disk or a CD with Windows 98, 95, or ME disk on it..
Motherboards are pretty solid, and the Intell is one of the better ones. Processors rarely go out.
Common failures are (1) dead memory module, (2) failed power supply, or (3) bad hard drive. Very often if any of those three are bad, the computer will not start up.
Testing the power supply is more difficult. Once simple test is to watch the back of the power supply with a strong light. Have somebody else press the <ON> button while you watch to see if the fan blades on the power supply turn. If they turn only 1/8 turn to 1 turn and quit, the power supply is usually bad and is the likely problem.
Better yet, buy or borrow a power supply tester. They cost anywhere from $9 to $29, depending on quality or complexity.

I bought my new TB Caviar Black WD FAEX couple of weeks ago The HDD? Faulty only thing I've put on the drive is a GB backup Acronis image of my SSD Thing is it would appear to be faulty Normally my PC boots fine from SSD with HDD connected but couldn't get it to boot last night it was hanging on the starting windows screen forever Also when I loaded Acronis to see if I could access the TB drive it took some time while Acronis was 'Analysing E ' then it came up with 'failed to read sectors ' After cancelling it went into Acronis backup and recovery screen and I could see the drive and the backup image But Faulty HDD? when I disconnected the drive my SSD booted fine Having used Faulty HDD? Crystal Disk last night and HD tune these are the results There only seems to be one red block Do I need to RMA it or Faulty HDD? just format it and see if it clears But even if it does clear does it suggest a dodgy drive Just rang the etailer they said rma and collection will be ok but they'd like me to run WD's own Datalife Diagnostic Tool So I better do that I suppose

A:Faulty HDD?

Oh well, it's all academic now as I've got an RMA sorted, collection tomorrow and then replacement drive in a few days.

As it happens, it took ages for the WD diagnostics tool to read the drive and the estimated time went up and up and up to around 40 hours before it got past the bad bit. Now it's showing under 2 hours left.

Hi I have been given an Advent 5421 laptop by my neighbour which runs 32bit window vista basic.
The problem with it was 4 or 5 after starting the window it freezed I was not given a manufacturer’s recovery DVD and because of the problem was not able to create one after many unsuccessful attempts to reinstall the O/S or to use the utility provided by the vista I removed the hard drive and placed it inside my laptop and managed to reformat and reinstall the Vista (home premium) using the recovery DVD that I had for my Advent laptop and it worked fine on mine but when I tried to place it back and run it again same problem It won’t let me run vista and when I do try to run the recovery utility it freezes
Dose anyone know how I can sort this problem out I be very grateful

Hi there,

I have a PCI-E slot that doesn't seem to work with a 9500gt. The 9500gt worked for many months then all of a sudden, no display appeared on my monitor one day. I switched to another PSU (weaker but still adequate), but still the same result. After doing some more hardware changes, I assumed it was a dead motherboard. Luckily I had a friend who had a spare EAH3450 Silent, and it worked! I have been using it ever since and my PC has ran with no problems.

I also tried a 9800gt and still no display. I checked the BIOS menu and saw that the display adapter was on PCI, changed it to PCI-E, but once again the same problem. I am not sure if this is a power problem since the 9500gt has such a low requirement and worked for a period of time. Any suggestions as to what might have happened?

 First time here. hello, guy's my name is alex.

I have a dell and i installed a 1 tb hd and then tried to boot, but no sound. And the cpu fan would turn for 2 sec's and shut off, the monitor would start to come on but shut off. I checked all connections and only removed hd. well found someone on craigslist that checked it for me and said it was the processor?
could that be true?
And also on a different pc, is it bad to have a cpu on a motherboard that is to fast. this guy said the cpu is to fast for it. Any comments would be appreciated.

Thank You all. alex from council bluffs, iowa..

It would be very, very helpful if you could give us the hardware specs including make and model. How old is this system? Can your motherboard handle a TB harddrive, particularly the BIOS?

I just did an external test boot. With just the the CPU, graphics card. motherboard and ram all installed. But When i started it up I had no beep from the motherboard speaker and no display on the screen. I am now starting to believe that somthing may be wrong with one of the compannats.

Unless anyone has any ideas to why nothing is happening I am going to asume there is a faulty part.

Does anyone have any idea which part might be faulty? Or just any idea of why I am getting no display and no beep.

Thanks.

Decided my system needed an upgrade so i bought an Asus A v x-x mobo mb DDR ram and a W PSU Using all other bits from my existing set up Assembled everthing and it posted no problem and recognised ll the bits I decided that a fresh start with a nice clean drive would be the job so decided to Fdisk and reformat Thats where the problems started i have Fdisked and formatted drives many times but this time whenever i ? Faulty CPU tried to Faulty CPU ? load the OS it kept coming up that the free space was being incorrectly reported and asking if i wanted scandisk to fix the fault I would ask it to fix the fault and the try to load the OS then it would tell me it could not decompress the cab file and the D which is the boot disk RAMDRIVE was write protected I checked all cables and that everthing was seated correctly everything looked fine and the PC continued to post ok After about a dozen attempts to set up the drive i took out everything and put my old mobo and CPU back in and bingo everthing worked fine OS loaded a treat The CPU i Faulty CPU ? was trying to put into the new setup was a Sempron the mobo came with the revision BIOS so it was Faulty CPU ? compatible with the CPU Now the CPU was previously in a PC in which the mobo and PSU blew I rebuilt this one for a friend but replaced mobo CPU and PSU Everything else was fine drives ram etc and went in the rebuild and i assumed that the CPU was ok and only the mobo and PSU affected What i would like to know is are the problems i had indicating a fault in the CPU or a fault in one of the new components If i have to buy new CPU fine but any other bits will be under warranty and i dont want to spend money replacing something that is not faulty i apologise if this is a bit rambling any help would be much appreciated Logo nbsp

A:Faulty CPU ?

I doubt it's your cpu. If your cpu was bad, nothing would work right. You couldn't have seen anything on the screen if your cpu was bad.

Are you loading xp? If so, it has it's own drive format utility built in.

I was wondering if there was any diagnostic tool out there that could determine if my CPU is kicking the bucket?

My graphics card is fried at the moment, but I also think that either my CPU or RAM is dying. I notice that my computer is running VERY slowly. I'm not sure if this could be contributed to the dead/dying graphics unit, but I'm worried nonetheless.

Thanks in advance.

A while ago I was working on my computer when out of the blue it restarts. I picked the -Start Windows Normally option. Before it even gets to the desktop it would restart all over again. It did this until I removed the RAM sticks from DIMM slots B (slot 3 and 4) Now my computer is really slow. My computer is a HP a250n with 4x 256 ram.

A few days ago I did a full wipe on the HD to see if that would clear up the problem. It works well with only 2 sticks. When I put in the 3rd or/and 4th sticks I get to the desktop fine but only for a few minutes then it restarts and the screen goes blank. I tried switching the sticks but nothing works. What could it be?

A:Faulty ram?

Do a memtest
Have you tried swapping the memory sticks from 3-4 with the ones in 1-2?
This will help verify whether it's the sticks or the slots.
The memory test will help also.

A:Is my new RAM faulty?

I'd pick up one of these memory tests, install the memory as the only RAM in the system, and run them. Try moving the memory to different slots to see if the location affects the errors. ANY errors running these tests for any length of time is a problem.

So my mother's Geforce 6200 fan has started to catch on the sides of the heatsink, I have no clue if its because the little axle inside the fan has warped, or due to overheating or maybe even in need of greasing.
My first question would be, is there a way to find out if it is even fixable? Second, if not, are any of you familiar with any north american component dealer stores that I may find?

I'm located in Odessa, FL
Ordering online isn't really an option tho if I absolutely had to I would, I'm more interested in just going to some store and snatching up a new heatsink for it.

Hi I am new here. My pc recently restarts playing some games which is strange to me. I did some internet research and found that it could be me psu or gpu.
My pc spec:
Intel core i7 870 (base clock)
Intel motherboard dh55pj
Sapphire hd 6870 igb
Transcend ram (4+2) gb
Samsung 500 gb hdd
Thermaltake smartpower 550 watt psu 80+ bronze

Also I borrowed a friends` 6850 gpu+ 450 watt psu to see if there is anu problem in my mobo or processor but it was just fine. But I gave my friend my gpu psu combo and he faced problems like mine after using them for 1 week.
So now I am certain that either my gpu or my psu has gone bad. but I cant know for sure which one.Any helps.....

A:Faulty GPU or PSU?

Does your friend have a 500W PSU so they can test your GPU with their PSU? If they can test just the GPU, it might answer your question.

Actually 500W has head room, a 450W PSU might be enough to test for a week or so.

Greetings.
Last Christmas, I ordered a 1TB Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive online. When it arrived, it did not work at all, for my network did not detect the drive, even with seemingly nothing wrong.
Since then, I have called Iomega and replaced the drive, and this one arrived a few days ago. Since its initiation (that is, after it being plugged into my router) the bottom indication LED on the drive has been flashing between orange and blue, which is apparently due to the drive failing to detect a DHCP server.
What is it that I have to do next to fix it?

A:Faulty NAS

Do you assign IP numbers on your network, or do you let the router do so?

If DHCP Server is enabled on the router, it'll assign an IP#. If not, then DHCP won't even be detected. Now, if you DO have DHCP Server enabled on the router, you're probably looking at another dud - this time with the nic in the NAS being bad where the other one was a bad controller. Or even a bad cable.

Sometimes if I give the tower a 'nudge' it will continue. I'm using Windows 98 and have a 8 Gb HDD and a second 6Gb formatted but with nothing on it yet. Any ideas? How do I change the boot to use the other drive? but still able to use both for data. Thanks

If you 'nudge' the tower and it continues, that might suggest a loose IDE connection.

Yes, that is TOO low on the 12v rail. Whether that reading is accurate or not is another question. Getting a measurement off of a 12v fan lead might verify that if you have a tester available.

I was cleaning a PC that was infected with a tough rootkit and eventually rebuilt w/ OS to ensure all was well. During the attempted cleaning, I had a external hard drive and a flash drive connected to the PC. My question is ... can rootkits and their similar counterparts spread to attached drives such as these [and eventually infect the next PC they are attached to]?

I have since used the flash drive in a new Dell PC w/ Win7 and it is acting a bit strange all of a sudden after sitting overnight.

Thanks much!

A:Are Rootkits able to jump to external drives or removable drives?

Yes,that is quite easy,especially with .exe files.You ned to clean the drive and scan what ever iy connected to.Were they both Win7?EDIT:You can download and use Autorun Eater or Autorun USB Virus Finder which will allow removal of any suspicious 'autorun.inf' files they find. Panda USB Vaccine. Computer Vaccination will prevent any AutoRun file from running, regardless of whether the removable device is infected or not. USB Vaccination disables the autorun file so it cannot be read, modified or replaced and creates an AUTORUN_.INF as protection against malicious code. The Panda Resarch Blog advises that once USB drives have been vaccinated, they cannot be reversed except with a format. If you do this, be sure to back up your data files first or they will be lost during the formatting process.Another option for XP users is Flash_Disinfector by sUBs. Please read About Flash Disinfector by Papakid and USB/Flash Drive Safety by TheJoker.Finally, always scan USB flash drives and any external storage media after they have been used in other computer systems, even your own. An easy way to do this is to download "ClamWin Portable Antivirus", put it on your USB Flash Drive, update its definition files and perform a scan.{borrowed from our quietman7}

Is it possible for me to use my current up and running system, and one of the 2 software programs to mirror these drives?

MOBO is bad and you still want to recover info which might get corrupted in the transfer process.

On my Windoiws 7 Ultimate desktop PC, all my SATA hard drives are show up as removable from day 1. This is not a big problem but an anonyance. When I click "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media", all my fixed drives are listed along with the USB drive. Anyway to change the drive type of my internal drives to the proper type?
Thanks.

My Windows 10 Home laptop will recognize all of my flash drives but won't recognize any of my external hard drives. They all use to show up but now they aren't. The hard drives show up in disk manager but won't show up in file explorer. I hooked them up to other laptops & they all show up. I've tried uninstalling drivers & reinstalling them but It hasn't worked. Any ideas?

I got my new hard drive home tonight and realized it's SATA and my current one (the one that actually boots and runs the machine) is parallel. I installed the sata and it seems to work- but is there any danger with these two drives co-existing in the same machine? Clearly the machine can accomodate them both, but is it a bad idea?

A:Solved: Can serial ATA drives and parallel ATA drives co-exist in the same CPU?

Virtually every PC today relies on the venerable ATA (Advanced Technology Attachment) interface to connect hard drives, CD drives, and other types of drives. Spurred by the relentless demands for faster drive performance and greater reliability, the ATA standard (also known as IDE), which has a rated connection speed of 3.3 MBps, has undergone many advances. The Ultra ATA (dubbed Ultra ATA/133) interface can pass 16 bits of parallel data between a drive and PC at speeds of up to 133 MBps.
Such parallel-signal schemes, however, are reaching the practical limits of current cable, drive, and controller electronics. To achieve even faster data transfer rates, drive manufacturers are turning to a serial scheme called Serial ATA (SATA). Though it may seem counterintuitive that a serial technology (which transfers data one bit at a time rather than transferring multiple data bits simultaneously, as a parallel scheme does) could outpace a parallel one, that's exactly what SATA does; it transfers data at a much faster rate and more efficiently. Now that SATA drives, add-in controller cards, and most importantly, PC chipsets are finally available, you'll want to understand the benefits of this technology.

SATA typically handles data transfers of up to 150 MBps and in the future can be scaled up to 300 MBps and beyond. Some manufacturers predict speeds as high as 600 MBps. SATA offers a speedier boot process and faster loading of programs and data. But perhaps the best part of the new technology is SATA's simpler cabling.

If you've ever looked inside a PC, you've seen the wide, gray, 40-pin ribbon cable that daisy-chains master/slave drives to the ATA controller port. Not only were those 40 wires laying close together a potential source of interference, but routing the bulky cable made the placement of drives difficult. Moreover, the traditional cables are notorious for disturbing air flow within PCs. SATA uses thin cables that route easily and don't block a PC's cooling system, thus preventing hot spots and improving overall system reliability.

Connecting SATA drives is easier, too. Each drive connects to the host PC via an individual cable; the host PC treats all drives as master devices, eliminating the jumper settings, which have frustrated users for years. This greatly eases installation and configuration. Finally, the cables can be longer. Current parallel ATA cables max out at 18 inches, while SATA cables can be as long as 39.4 inches (1 meter). That's good for high-end boxes that use full-tower cases.

You will also find adding or replacing drives easier with SATA. You won't have to power down your PC before connecting a new drive, because SATA allows for hot-pluggable connections, so you can add or remove SATA drives while your PC is running. The connectors are also keyed (that is, designed for one-way insertion), so you don't need to worry about accidentally reversing a connection.

SATA is software-compatible with ATA, so you don't need any special drivers or OS upgrades to support the new drives; the SATA controller does the conversion between the drive and host PC. Consequently, SATA drives can coexist on the same system with parallel ATA devices.

Yet because of the differences between SATA and parallel ATA, you can't simply drop a SATA drive into a parallel ATA system. Here's what it takes to implement Serial ATA on your PC.

To start, you'll need a new SATA drive such as the 120GB Seagate Barracuda ATA V (www.seagate.com). The only difference you'll see in the SATA drive is the connector scheme (and the absence of drive jumpers).

The host PC requires a SATA controller with one or more SATA ports, such as the Promise Technology SATA150 TX2plus, which combines two independent SATA ports and one Ultra ATA port and supports up to two serial and two Ultra ATA drives (www.promise.com). In new SATA-compatible machines, the motherboard uses a control... Read more

I have a new computer plus a couple of other computers and I have some external hard drives and flash drives. what is the best way to check these devices to make sure they are clean, will just connecting them and viewing them or running AV and other security checks propose a risk to the computer that is checking?
Thanks for any advise!

A:External Hard drives and flash drives security

zformer,

You can consider the use of the Panda Vaccine on your computer and USB Drives:
Download Panda USB and AutoRun Vaccine - MajorGeeks

This tool provides a two way security by vaccinating both computer and/or USB drives.
It work on NTFS, FAT, FAT32 formatted drives.
However, vaccinating a USB drive cannot be undone without formatting the USB disk, using a hex editor, or a File Manager in a Linux distribution..

Next, make sure that your Antivirus can scan USB drives. Some do not have this option.

I have sought other help, done numerous things...such as removing the cdroms from device manager and letting Windows 98 re-install them. I can't read these in Windows Explorer either.
I have Adaptech Cd Creator 4.0 and in this program under cd info....the contents of both drives can be seen, also I can test these 2 drives, and they work perfectly under the tests. Any ideas why My Computer and Explorer see these drives as removable? I have exhausted my ideas on this one?????

OK, I am not understanding the following;
I just got a new motherboard (thinking that might be the problem) and put everything together perfectly and it turns on with lights and all fans running but now there's nothing on the screen at all. Click to expand...

Then this;
so I know for sure the temps aren't getting higher than 60Celsius in there. Click to expand...

If you cannot get a display with the new board, how can you know what the temps are?

Next have you read and followed the steps in the guide at the top of the page for problem builds?

Hi

I've found a Dell XPS B600r in the recycling center and took it home. I put it together correctly, but it won't do anything, but lighting up the power LED and start all fans and drives.
Screen flashes with some vidoe-cards one, with others it's always black.
RAM is ok, cuz th PC beeps without, but with he don't beep.
I hav removed everything except the processor and ram and the powerbutton form the board.
I have tested with a 333MHz, a 600MHz and an unknown processor. I have tested with about 2 AGP and 1 PCI graphiccard, and without.
Always the same.
I have removed the battery once too.

Is the board bad? Can I fix it?

Greetz H4N$L!

A:Mainboard faulty?

I would do a google search on the MB to find out the exact specs. Then if I had the parts I would try a build.

If your recycling center is anything like mine (a stopping place before the dump) then the MB is probably bad to start with.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 and my keyboard wasn't working. Can anyone please tell if i touch something and lossen the screen? Or is the screen goingbad? Or does the keyboard got something to do with this problem?

A:Faulty Screen

As you have recently dismantled some bits to change the keyboard, the first thing I would is remove it again and carefully check for any dislodged cables or connectors. Its fairly easy to nudge connectors so they look like they are attached but they don't make good enough contact to operate correctly.

I would also attach an external monitor and check that the picture on that is OK, this confirms that the problem is the screen or cabling and not the graphics adaptor itself.

Memory Testing (including bootable CD's and floppies):

Memtest86
MemScope (Floppy and CD images.)
Roadkil's RAM Test
Microsoft Memory Test (floppy or CD ISO image)

If you have enough memory sticks, you can test them by removing one at a time and see if the problem disappears.

If you are running Vista or 7, tap F8 on boot and choose the memory diagnostic, or if you can boot up, go to Start > Search and type:

mdsched.exe

Choose to run a memory diagnostic on next boot. Or, you can boot from the DVD and run it from there.

A:Faulty Ram -But which module?

No there really isn't. I would remove one and run the test again then replace it and do again. While the memory test in Windows is better than nothing I would still run memtest86 before making any decisions and run it for 4 full tests where each one has 8 passes and then you will know for sure. Do it with only 1 stick in each time. Any errors at all mean you have the culprit.

My CD/DVD drive is faulty. If I start up my computer from off, it works perfectly with the first CD. When I eject and try a second CD, that's when I get problems. It does nothing. I can't use the eject button on the drive itself, but I can use eject by right clicking DVD drive in My Computer. According to Device Manager, everything is working fine, and I have the latest drivers installed. It is an HP DVD-RAM UJ8DB. When I insert my 2nd CD, it whirrs for a few seconds then silence. Occasionally, repeated ejections and insertions yields a working drive, but it can take a while. So I know it works. Any help would be much appreciated!

Boiling down a problem to the simplest, single issue – my XP professional installation is not correctly installed and is not working correctly. The causes of this situation are faulty tech support, multiple repairs and fixes – almost all made thing worse.

Both Microsoft auto update and Windows Live OneCare state there is an important security update that needs to be installed. When I allow auto update or OneCare to perform the update – it fails. The error messages are as follows:

1. Security Update For Microsoft XML Core Service 4.0 Service Pack2 (kb936181 or kb916281) not installed.
2. Security Update For Cumulative Security Update Internet Explorer for Windows XP (kb936181) not installed.

What is the problem? What should be done? Why?

Thank you.

this is optional and not necessary

Go to Windows Update page, from there you can check your update history, block updates and download them

A:ISP cause my modem to become faulty?

Hi there .. Yes any Hardware can become faulty .. Have had a Router which became faulty just after a months useage .. The Earth net would work but not the Wireless .. Resetting your Modem can not do it any harm .. As you own the Modem you are responsible for it .. I was lucky as my Router came with my ISP so they replaced it .. How old is your Modem and what is the Model Number ? ...

I recently acquired a toasted pc from a friend that wanted me to get it running. With the stock psu it turns on for a minute and shuts off again and automatically restarts. So I tried changing the psu with an evga 500w psu I had for a gaming build I'm trying to save up for and it still does the same thing,I've cleared CMOS twice, tried it without RAM does the same thing. It has the Pegatron M2N78-LA motherboard and was wondering if that was the issue. When it turns on it doesn't send any signal to the monitor,so that's kinda what I'm basing my guess off of.

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

I built a new computer weeks ago and faulty of symptoms are What CPU? it ran perfectly for weeks Then crashed while playing MOH Problems started after that so I thought that corrupted the OS so I did a clean install of everything Didnt help All games freeze after about minutes of play I keep getting blue screen- quot windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer quot page What are symptoms of faulty CPU? fault errors and lock ups It happens What are symptoms of faulty CPU? in every program even just from clicking on an icon and had a few random reboots Ive replaced every piece of hardware including PS and done OS installs with and without updates service packs and different driver configurations It happens when OC s or default settings Temps are normal - F Now Im down to the mobo or processor Had the processor since may and never had a problem But mob is a referb from Newegg that was supposedly inspected by the manufacturer Im going to see if Biostar will replace it If not Im getting an Abit Thanks nbsp

A:What are symptoms of faulty CPU?

That can happen from OCing. Some people might use an OCed CPU for years, sometimes it won't last weeks. You accepted the risks when you started OCing.

What you need to do is run some Burn-in tests such as Memtest or AIDA16 for a long while & see if you get any errors.

It could also be a HDD just waiting to fail & loose your Data.

What temps are you getting BTW ? ( CPU, system, HDD, etc )

PS. In case you don't feel like doing separate bootdisks for each utility, download UltimateBootCD, AIDA16 & Memtest86 are on it.

A:My faulty Laptop

I share your doubts about the "resistors and capacitors".

With amost all components being surface mount, bery little on the motherboard is "serviceable" to that extent.

But if it is new, why are you paying for service? Revert to XP and if it still persists send it back under warranty. And don't use cracked software.

Defeating the activation is a breach of the forum rules, so expect the post to be closed at any stage.
