Computer locking up, need to do a hard reset

Q: Computer locking up, need to do a hard reset

I have been experiencing problems with my PC locking up and needing to hold down the power button to shut it off It seems to be more of an issue during the summer months leading me to believe it is a heat issue I downloaded Core Temp to see if I could get a temperature reading when it locks up I started the program left it running on the desktop and let the computer sit idle When it locked up the last reported temperature for Core was C and Core was C which did not seem very extreme Is there anything else I can do to try and see if a specific component is failing due to heat I have tried using compressed air to clean out my case made sure all case fans are working and reapplied Arctic Silver Silver thermal compound on the CPU PC Details Antec Performance Plus AMG Asus P Q SE Intel Core Duo E Wolfdale GB Kingston HyperX DDR RAM MB GeForce GTX Sound Blaster Audigy ZS Windows XP Pro SP

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Built my computer about months ago worked fine up until now My PC randomly freezes completely and suddenly Task manager wont open and I have to reset it however even after reset it takes forever to boot and it goes straight to the wont up, reset UEFI Computer to boot till full shutdown/reset goes button locking UEFI and not to Windows even if I exit the UEFI it won t boot into Windows until I shut it off completely then turn it back on My M g SSD Windows Drive doesn t show up in the Computer locking up, reset button goes to UEFI wont boot till full shutdown/reset boot menu but does in device manager my computer however this is not a new thing I suspected the SSD might be failing The freezing started after having my computer off for days it s never been Computer locking up, reset button goes to UEFI wont boot till full shutdown/reset shut off for more than a day or two I can think of no other unusual things Computer locking up, reset button goes to UEFI wont boot till full shutdown/reset I might have done or changed So far I have tried Resetting the BIOS overclocks to quot default quot they have been stable Running memtest for a period of hours with no errors Running MSI Kombuster burn-in-test for about half an hour This was happening while playing Battlefield I thought it might be the game GPU but it happens even while watching VLC or browsing Firefox and Chrome on their own Didn t crash Freeing up space in the Windows SSD It had less than GB now it has GB and the problem still occurs Checked all temperatures of CPU GPU Drives Mobo nothing is overheating Under GPU stress test It doesn t lag or give warnings it just locks up There were several large tmp files taking up space - gb in my windows SSD g M I deleted them but one reappeared I forgot the folder location it was a Temp folder I think under AppData it wasn t the windows temp folder The reason I mention it is because they were never there before I don t use my Windows SSD for anything beside a few quot essential quot small applications and then suddenly it was full which I didn t see until I was troubleshooting my current issue They were all hours old My only guess is BF was putting them there for some reason because my g SSD was too full They all started with SRA then random letters or numbers tmp nbsp

The SSD might be failing. Is it still under warranty?

I copied this from another forum as it's better than rewriting it as I got no help there Hiya so as the thread title states my relatively newish computer's been hardlocking for a while I tried on a different forum but to no avail and that was over a month or so ago so I thought I might try this Hard locking/Freezing Computer one I'm only so I don't have cash to spend Specs CPU Intel i GPU Gigabyte GTX Ti OC Edition RAM GB Nanya Tech mhz Cheap brand I Hard locking/Freezing Computer know but meh HDD WD Green GB Slowish but does the job for now PSU Aereon w Horrible but meh again Case Coolermaster v Black Edition MoBo Asus P h -m LE WiFi Card TP-Link TL-WN ND It was fine for the first or so months but then I started getting random freezes no BSOD nothing Only a loop of the last noise that was playing through the headset at the time It's all robotty and metallic sounding When it freezes there's pretty much no chance of recovery It's done it maybe or the time give or take so it's rare I upgraded the BIOS a while back thinking it could be that but it wasn't I've done video drivers etc but one thing that I think may coincide with the freezing is a program or driver I installed a while back AI Suite by Asus I also installed their USB drivers trying to get better speeds out of it Was only averaging MB s on a port and stick Ever since I installed that driver the USB port's hardly ever recognize the USB stick One time I was running a latency checker and it froze up during the time I was running it Luckily it unfroze and I got a reading of million plus whatever the unit was It's meant to be around - ish Before that though at random times it'd jump up to and was giving me warnings about drivers I changed the power setting in the BIOS and ever since then it's slowed down with the frequency of freezing it used to do it - times a day minimum now it does it - times a day I even went without a freeze for days in a row twice not too long ago but that didn't fix it I thought it might've been the PSU It froze yesterday and when it froze the usual noise happened but I decided to unplug my Wireless mouse and Keyboard receiver and I got the loading circle but couldn't move the mouse the noise was still going The robotty loop one but I couldn't control anything It unfroze a minute or two later and was fine after then for the rest of the day Could that mean it's the MoBos USB ports Or the drivers for the USB that I downloaded ages ago Also i've heard bad things about the GPU i've got installed so it could also be that The more programs i've got running the larger chance of crashing it has The intensity of the programs doesn't seem to matter much anymore it did when it first started but now it will freeze during anything just as much as everything else I apologise for the wall of text but it's really bothering me now as it was ish for it and I was only at the time of receiving it so it's a shame it's not working properly already Also it was prebuilt but shipping's too expensive here in Australia ish there back not worth it IMO If you guys need any more info just ask and i'll help out with that - Sincerely Matt PS I've been on these forums before for another problem which I forgot about

Hi keeps fresh after even locking Computer of hard Vista. install I wonder Computer keeps hard locking even after fresh install of Vista. if anyone can help me with this I have a pretty new computer that used to work just great Intel Q CPU EVGA i mobo EVGA core GTX WD GB hard drive Vista Ultimate x Patriot x GB DDR BFG watt PSU This computer has run beautifully for the last six months I had the occasional problem but for the most part it has been great Well just in the last couple weeks it has started to freeze up pretty frequently It locks and requires me to power down and manually re-start it This is followed by the computer often though not always making the long-beep during post which requires me to re-start it again It will eventually start but sometimes requires two or three tries I don t really know what its problem is I figured I had installed something weird and it was causing it to act up So I formatted the drive and re-installed Vista I made sure to install all the latest drivers for all my hardware too I thought sure that would fix the problem Nope It still locks up at random times-- sometimes right away other times not-at-all although it is beginning to happen pretty much every day now more than once I don t think it s heat related because I always keep an eye on my temps CPU is sporting an average of C right now-- the GPU is at C I have verified this with multiple temp applications Coretemp Everest and in the BIOS I am beginning to think that some bit of hardware is failing I know that freezes can sometimes be memory related I have also heard that this might be a power issue Everything in my system was new when I built it except the PSU which I used for about months before this in my old comp I Googled around and found a few posts about Vista s sleep functions being related to freezes I have always had Vista s Sleep function disabled because it was always buggy but I have since disabled Vista s Hard drive sleep function as well this followed about min later with a freeze so I don t think that was it Does anyone have any other ideas by chance If it is hardware related can anyone suggest what the most likely culprit is I would like to try to buy the correct replacement part if at all possible rather than spend a fortune on a bunch of stuff that isn t needed So far I was thinking about getting ram first then PSU if that didn t work Does this sound right or should I try something else first Might it be the CPU Thank you very much for any and all help wit this Edit I wasn t sure if this was a Vista or Hardware prob should I move it to the Hardware forum nbsp

A:Computer keeps hard locking even after fresh install of Vista.

What you can do is start disconnecting hardware from the PC, one at a time, and see if the freeze goes away.

disconnect things like, external usb devices, cd/dvd roms, add in cards(remove them), card readers, ect.

Memory, if there is more than 1 module, test each module in the system one at a time.

of course there is some hardware you cannot remove, but when you eliminate all the rest, you can start thanking about processors, video cards, motherboards.

If the PSU is in doubt, all you can do is install a spare if you have one.

A process of elimination.

should I move it to the Hardware forum?)Click to expand...

no, you will get spanked for double posting, a pet peeve around here with the mods.

My mother has Computer sometimes hard boot reset without won't an HP that runs Windows Vista Premium Home Its about - yrs old Two weeks ago the power went off for a few minutes when it was on Computer won't boot sometimes without hard reset or in sleep mode When she tried to turn it back on she could see the quot cd light quot blink once or twice the fans came on but no power I found the directions to unplug all the cords and hold the power button down to reset it Well it worked I then ran Malwarebytes and it did find one or two things but they were removed Today she called me to tell me the same thing happened But the power never went out She had it on and it must have gone into a sleep mode and Computer won't boot sometimes without hard reset nothing worked to bring it out She had to reset it again Does anyone know what would be causing this to happen I m wondering if its something I could easily fix myself or if we need to bring it to someone to be repaired

A:Computer won't boot sometimes without hard reset

Hello kat91119,Some people have been able to awaken the monitor when the computer is in "sleep" mode by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL (not holding them) and then clicking cancel. You could try going through this troubleshooting guide: How to Troubleshoot a Vista or Windows 7 Sleep Mode Problem. You will note that they recommend updating the display drivers and the system bios, first. I wouldn't worry about the bios at this point but would check the computer manufacturer's web site to see if they have an "updated" display driver. How to determine the dispaly adapter name and version then go to manufacturer's website:First, click "Start" (the globe) and right mouse click on "Computer" and click "Properties."Select "Device Manager" then click on the (+) next to "Display Adapters." Write down the make and model number.Next, right mouse click on the Display Adapter and click "Properties," "Driver" tab, and write down driver date and driver version. Now you can go the computer manufacturer's web site (i.e. Dell, HP, Acer, etc.), look for "Download Drivers and Software" (may have to click on Support, first). Enter either "Tag number" or exact "make and model number." Select the computer operating system (Vista 32 or Vista 64).Look for your exact display adapter, note date and driver version. If newer, download and install. Finally, proceed with the troubleshooting guide.I hope it helps.

We have quite a few laptops that are locking up when turned on. Sometimes a reboot will fix this, other times, we are forced to reset the winsock. I've ran Dell diagnostics and the drive diagnostics. I've seen nothing that is wrong. The event log show various items, but the only critical item is a kernel-power. The rest are errors or warnings. I've also updated the bios to a newer version too. Tech at Dell are pushing a reinstall of the OS, which really is a last option.

Dell E6330 Laptops, 32 bit Windows 7
SED Drives, encrypted and using Kaspersky for AV
Using Verizon phones with their hotspots for Internet

It's not all of my computers, but various ones. All worked fine during setup, but started to have issues after my users got them.

A:Windows 7 Locking up, winsock reset is only fix

Hi jweitzel,

Not sure if this will help your issue or if you have already tried these methods but it will check your files
and disk for errors and eliminate these problems and there is no harm in trying these.

Start>Type cmd> Right click and run as Administrator, then run chkdsk:

run a chkdsk /f /r to make sure you don’t have any disk errors

then run System File checker:

run sfc.exe /scannow to validate your system files

If any faults found reboot and see if issue is still present.

Also check and install latest drivers.

Hope this helps

Cheer

Dave

Hi, Did you disable System Restore? Your scans may be detecting files in the RESTOR_ area...which they cannot fix. Turning off System Restore is neccessary so that you can remove all the infected files, malware etc from your Restore Points...disabling System Restore directions/info here:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2001012513122239?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

After things are cleaned up, you can create a new Restore Point. If you did do this already looks like I will not be able to help you....the log is fine.

A:Computer wont reset (Hard or Software)

A strange problem indeed.

Triple check your wiring is correct using your motherboard manual. Be sure the motherboard is mounted correctly on the standoffs and no grounds are occurring.

Faulty buttons on the case itself?

Reset bios to optimal defaults, clear cmos.

After that I would return the mobo.

Sorry I cant be more specific, Hope this helps.

Hi all I've been having this problem for quite some time now I would say a year or more where my computer completely freezes up without any prompting It's quite frustrating to diagnose since it happens on such a random basis -there seems to be no trend as to what kind of programs I have running what kind of things I am using it for etc Sometimes it happens when I'm just browsing the net other times it happens when I just have some files up ie not memory intensive tasks -today it even happened when I put a USB stick in I am at a complete loss as to what might be the cause I have already deleted some old programs that I'm not using but that hasn't seemed to have done anything I've done a disk cleanup and run a scan for viruses The freeze can only be resolved with a hard restart which I know is not good for the computer I've already had to do this some or so times already I've attached the event viewer taken computer reset requiring Random freeze hard about - minutes after the last freeze I had the one when it froze after I put my USB stick in Any help or advice at all would be much appreciated

How to find and post your Minidump Files:

My Computer > C Drive > Windows Folder > Minidump Folder > Minidump Files.

It is these files that we need (not the folder). Attach to your next post the five most recent dumps. Notice the Manage Attachments button at the bottom when you go to post the next time. You can Zip up to five files per Zip; if you only have one or two you don?t need to zip them, just attach as is. Please do us a favor and don?t Zip each one individually.

I recently reinstalled Windows 7 on my custom built PC. Since doing so I have random freezes that allow me to do nothing other than hard reset the computer. There is no particular time that it does it, and it has mostly been noticed while either on the desktop or using Firefox.

We can see that the CPU detected a Timeout Error, but wasn't able to identify what caused the error.

A:Computer Freezes - Sound Continues - Requires Hard Reset

I should note that turning all the settings down from High (auto-detected) to Medium kept me from crashing in that area, and turning down one of the settings on WoW has kept me from crashing since too, but why are graphics causing my whole computer to freeze? Especially on a GTX 770?

Hello,

I am running two 7950s in crossfire on my computer. Anytime I launch a game, my computer just locks up and this hardcore buzzing sound playing right when it crashes, the sound continues while the computer is frozen.
This problem has happened in both Battlefield 3 and Splinter Cell Blacklist. I have enabled Crossfire and Crossfire for applications that have no associated profile. In GPUz, it says my cards are enabled for crossfire.

Any ideas on this? I'm wondering if it's my psu? If I disable crossfire, the games work, but the second gpu is at 0% utilization.

Here are my specs:
Windows 8 64bit
AMD 13.8 beta 2 drivers
ULPS is disabled via MSI Afterburner (and I did restart after)
CPU: 4670k
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z87x-UD5H
RAM: 16GB Gskill
HDD: OS on a 120gb ssd, games on a 2tb WD Black
PSU: 750w Corsair

A:Crossfire 7950s lock up computer, hard reset required

Since the games work fine when you disable Cf it seems like it is a driver issue, try downloading the latest 13.10 Driver and see if it fixes your issue.

I have a Windows 8 tablet Acer Iconia W700(I5 Core) and i am trying to factory reset to the default settings again because of the stupid problems i am having on the tablet.
Here is the problem i am trying to get into the BIOS which is the 1 step on the Acer website but for some bizarre reason when it is completely off i press the Windows button and the power button to get in to the BIOS as it says on the Acer Website but it keeps going to the start menu/desktop now instead of going to the BIOS. :/
I have factory reset/hard reset on my Acer Iconia W700 a couple times and i never had this problem before, i gone in to the BIOS no problem!!!
Can someone help me please?? Thanks!!!

Hi there So in April I decided to go all in on an Alienware which I use for business and pleasure After a couple weeks I started noticing the computer would not wake from sleep - after on BSOD long reset Hard periods needed computer Invisible wake during extended times such as over night I would simply close the lid at night and open it in the morning where Invisible BSOD on computer wake after long periods - Hard reset needed the HDD light would come on and then the computer would be frozen in a state with a black screen before bootup where I am forced to hold the power button down to reset It would then tell me that the computer was Invisible BSOD on computer wake after long periods - Hard reset needed shut down incorrectly etc I finally had Dell tech support work on it who were absolutely fantastic at the time They went through all kinds of system setting changes including how the computer sleeps updated video and MANY other drivers including a reinstall of windows Problem persisted Next they sent a tech out to replace the Video cards problem persisted Next they replaced the HDD's motherboard and video cards again problem persisted They were completely stumped so they sent me a brand new system which is even better than the last one I had After a few days I noticed this system is doing the exact same thing I called tech support and the original guy is now in another department so I'm dealing with a new guy now who is starting from scratch again with this system I spoke with their manager as this guy wanted to reset the computer to factory again and he also suggested that they are sure that a reinstall of windows or an alien respawn they call it would solve my issue I tried to explain to them that this would be the third run of windows and I can't logically see why it is going to solve the issue now This is why I am now reaching out to this community This is a business computer as well so I don't really find it optimal to keep wiping it clean as I'm sure you can understand The strange thing is that times out of when I wake the computer in the morning it will be completely locked up and I have to hard reset so it doesn't do it all the time Even stranger is the fact that I have only managed to capture dump files that seem to be triggered from this event So for some reason it is not always creating a dump file but each and every time it says the computer was shut down incorrectly I look forward to anyone being able to shed some light on this as the entire team at Dell seems to be stumped Stevieb

A:Invisible BSOD on computer wake after long periods - Hard reset needed

Welcome to 7F.

Your dumps ared indicating a device driver as being the problem but none are showing.

Driver Verifier will stress your drivers and cause BSODs if any fail and will flag them up in the dump files. Follow this tutorial to enable/disable it. Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable

   Information
Enable Driver Verifier but only enable these options:
Standard settings and IRP logging step 3.
Don't enable Force Pending I/O Requests

   Warning
Make a System Restore point before enabling Driver Verifier.

   Note
Your system will act very sluggishly while DV is enabled, this is normal as your drivers will be being subjected to heavy testing in order to make them crash.

Recently (in the last month or so) my computer has been hard-locking a lot. What's worse is that it happens seemingly randomly. I could be playing a game (Team Fortress 2, Mass Effect, Left 4 Dead, etc.) or browsing the web or watching a Youtube video; doesn't matter, it will just decide to freeze. The keyboard and mouse prove unresponsive and the sound cuts out, prompting me to do a hard reboot.

I'm fairly sure it's not specifically gaming or internet related, since it has frozen just in Microsoft Word. I searched online for help, and I heard it might be my memory, so I got Memtest86+ and ran it today for 4 hours, 3.5 passes, and no errors.

Really, it's starting to get unbelievably frustrating, so I'd appreciate any help in fixing the problem and/or telling me what I could check next.

A:Random Hard-Locking

It could be overheating. Blow out all fans with Compressed air especially the Processor fan and Heat sync. Go into the Bios and post the Temps, Voltages and Fan Speeds. If all is normal, you might have some bad clusters on your Hard Drive. Go to Start/Run and type CMD in the command prompt type chkdks /f/r and hit enter, then type a Y and restart the computer. the Check Disk utility will try and fix any errors.

It does indeed work, however.

I am running an AMD Athlon 1200 under Windows Me with 512 RAM and an ATI All In Wonder Pro graphics card. I have purchased some new software which has been running fine, until today. When I move to a tab within the program, the text boxes are selected as though dragged with a mouse and I get the message (X) Can't create compatible DC. The system then hard locks.

The authors, while being sympathetic, are unable to recreate the problem, so I wondered if anyone here had come across a similar problem.

Hello everyone,
I am really at my wit's end with my pc at the moment. For about a week now it has been hard locking all the time, just at random but I do notice it happens most often when launching a game. I have tried everything I can think of. I've ran memtest which came back with no errors, ran chkdsk with no errors, ran my anti virus and it cam back clean. I just don't know what to do. I have uploaded all the info you guys hopefully need. I really need help guys. I'm totally stumped. Cheers.

Hard disk controller drivers/SATA drivers
If you have a Marvell IDE ATA/ATAPI device, make sure the drivers are up to date from the Intel site or Marvell site and not from your motherboard/vendor support site.

Monitor temperatures during the following tests. Use the following programs to monitor the temperatures. Real Temp is a good CPU temperature monitor.
Speccy - System Information - Free Download will monitor all hardware temperatures.
HWiNFO, HWiNFO32 & HWiNFO64 - Hardware Information and Analysis Tools can be inaccurate for CPU temperatures, but is a good program for GPU temperature monitoring.
Use FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, Burn-in Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net to test the graphics card GPU. Let it run until the GPU temperatures even out or until the GPU temperatures reach a dangerous level (you can find the max temperature for your card on either the nVidia or AMD sites; if you are not sure, ask us). The goal is to get a steady temperature, find out if the GPU is overheating, or to see if there are any artifacts present in the test itself: look for strange pixelated patterns on the screen or colors that do not look like they belong. Then use the |MG| Video Memory Stress Test 1.7.116 Download to test your graphics card memory. Let the memory test run for at least seven passes; the more the better.

Run Hardware - Stress Test With Prime95 to determine any hardware problems. Run all three tests for a few hours each. If you get errors, stop the test and post back here.

Follow the steps for doing CPU stress test using IntelBurnTest

Run the boot version of Memtest86+ paying close attention to Parts 2 and 3 of the tutorial. Also, in case Memtest86+ misses anything and comes up with no errors, run the extended version of the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool for at least five passes. These you may want to run overnight since they take a long time to complete (run them an hour before bed each of the next two nights and check before going to sleep that they are still running).

For Part 3: If You Have Errors: If you swap any memory components, follow these steps for ESD safety:Shut down and turn off your computer.
Unplug all power supplies to the computer (AC Power then battery for laptops, AC power for desktops)
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to close the circuit and ensure all power drains from components.
Make sure you are grounded by using proper grounding techniques, i.e. work on an anti-static workbench, anti-static desk, or an anti-static pad. Hold something metallic while touching it to the anti-static surface, or use an anti-static wristband to attach to the anti-static material while working. If you do not have an anti-static workbench, desk, or pad, you can use your computer tower... Read more

Hello My friend bought a new computer a few months ago that came with Vista installed It also came with a bunch of other programs bloatware installed I uninstalled all the up computer new locking stuff she didn't want which included Norton AV and replaced that particular program with AntiVir which I have used and liked for years She doesn't use the computer for much except playing pre-installed card games and reading email and she didn't install anything except her Kodak printer I installed the Comodo firewall but that didn't work well for her so when Zone Alarm released a Vista-compatible version I uninstalled Comodo and installed ZA She began telling me the computer was freezing up from time to time Then it began freezing up regularly Now it is freezing up so badly that new computer locking up she can't even play her games I reviewed the event log and found errors involving Windows Error Reporting service and warnings about the printer I turned off the error reporting and unplugged the printer The problem persisted I'm not a Vista user myself XP so don't know exactly how I found this but I think AntiVir popped new computer locking up up a bubble that said it was out of date I clicked on it and Vista said there were multiple AV programs that were out of date So I clicked on show me what's installed or whatever the link was called That dang Norton still showed up as being installed even after I uninstalled it I double checked just in case I had a brain fart and it is definitely gone from the programs list So I shut down AntiVir so as to not have the two conflicting with each other while I was working Then I searched the registry to see what came up for Norton a lot of course The computer froze while I was in mid-export of a registry backup prior to making changes At this point because we were having to reboot practically every few keystrokes I decided to ask for help When I first found the multiple AV installations I thought quot I've found the problem quot But after it froze with no quot installed quot AV program actively running I'm not so sure any more So where do I go from here

A:new computer locking up

Hi Ophelia,

Welcome to the forums.

Here is a link to remove that Norton bloatware.

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

After you run this tool please reboot and that will hopefully fix the locking up.

Looking at your HTJ log I Noticed you have Google Desktop installed.

It might just be me, But I'd try uninstalling goggle desktop.
I've had troubles with it before causing problems with the IE, Not sure if they were the same as the fault you've described but it might not be a bad idea, And besides you can always reinstall it.

Also check your event log see if it has a listing of any errors.

Hope it helps.

Be sure the PC isn't overheating. Another problem could be a failing power supply.

Hello, I have been having an issue with my desktop computer lately and I am unsure of the cause. whenever I attempt to end a program in task manager it screws up my computer, the desktop goes completely blank except for the background. no icons, no taskbar or anything, I can't even right click and the keyboard does nothing either as far as I know. the only way to get it out of this state is to press the power button and restart it. This also happened the other day when I had a flash drive in the computer, but pulling the flash drive out somehow fixed it to. Can anybody help me out here? It's a rather annoying problem

You might considr testing your RAM and HDD with the tools found on this Ultimate Boot CD - Download the UBCD

Have you considered a virus?
Try sfc /scannow from the command prompt as well?

Hi -

Make sure video drivers are updated. Go directly to device manufacturer's site, e.g., NVIDIA, ATI, etc...

Check temps with Speedfan v4.41 --> http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

Use compressed air to clean vents, but do not directly spray into vents as it may damage the fan.

If this is a duplicate request, I am sorry. I attempted to send this in request earlier and after hitting submit new post I lost connection with this website and got a message "Server not found".

My problem is my computer keeps locking up, mostly, if not entirely, while on the internet. I have windows XP home edition v5.1. I run SpyBot and SpySubtract daily. I have done a full system scan with Norton in safe mode and found nothing. Just recently my icons on the quick start toolbar disapear.

Can someone help get my computer back to normal please?

So running windows 7 ultimate but this happened on windows XP too. During and ONLY during video game load screens my computer will sometimes lock up (about 15% of load screens) and will force me to restart. I thought it was the video card overheating or something of the sort but if thats the case why would it only happen during load screens and not during the game?

This happens in CoD 4, CoD MW2, and the command and conquer games, havnt tried any others.

Thx in advance for any ideas

Is there a way in Windows 2000 that I can "lock" my computer so that other people can't use it. I am in an office where everyone can go to anyone's computer and log themselves in. Unfortunately, my settings on my computer keep on getting changed and I'm getting a little frustrated. I know in Windows 98 I was able to set a password with my screen saver so that if I stepped away from my computer, nobody could use it.

Thanks.

A:Locking my Computer

Well, I use Xp Pro, but this should still work:

Go to where you control your user profile (your log on password) and check to see what your password is.

Now, hit the Windows Key + L.

***NOTE***: The "Windows" Key is the key that says "Start" on it and has the Windows logo on it...It should be between or near Ctrl and Alt).

A:HJT Log, HELP!! My computer is locking up!

Hi wingwang,

Your log is clean !
It is not wise to run 2 different firewalls at the same time, ZoneAlarm and Sygate. I suggest you to uninstall one of them.

Also, you may stop the following processes at the startup. It's a useless resource hog.

1° Run HijackThis (Important : all other open windows must be effectively closed and not minimized, no opened Internet browser while HijackThis is fixing)
and fix the following entries :

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cmaudio] RunDll32 cmicnfg.cpl,CMICtrlWnd
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DeadAIM] rundll32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

2° Restart the computer.

After a long extensive google search i have ended up here with none of my problems solved.

Where to start, around a month or two ago my computer started to lock up. I would be working on it and it would freeze. No BSOD, and i couldn't access the task manager, the mouse would still move. After it froze if i clicked the keys on the keyboard it wouldnt do anything until my computer started beeping with each keystroke.

The weird thing is, it only happens when i do things on it. The other day i let it boot up, i opened itunes, and left it alone. It went a day and a half without freezing, but then i opened firefox and started browsing the web and it froze withing 5 minutes.

I have a dell xps 400

Windows XP

512 mb ram

I have no clue what the problem is, any help with even diagnosing it would be greatly appreciated.

My AMD based computer running Windows XP Home Edition has gotten very slow to the point where it locks up. Nothing showed up in an AVG 2012 virus scan nor a Malwarebytes scan so I did a SAFE MODE virus scan with AVG 2012, and a malware scan with Malwarebytes. Nothing found. When I did a Malwarebytes quick scan in normal mode it went beyond 12 minutes cycling through temporary folders. This was just after running a CCleaner sweep. Normal is 6 minutes for that quick scan. I had been getting Out Of Memory At Line: 1 messages. When I am on the internet on a page I hear the computer clicking as if programs were opening or closing.
I did the disk cleanup, chkdsk and defrag to no avail. Finally, I found a ERUNT backup form last year and did the ERUNT.exe to reinstall the registry. Now the Start button is inactive and I can't find System Restore.

Hi! I wasn't sure where exactly to put this as I still don't know exactly what the problem is but here we are anyways.

A few days ago my computer started locking up after no more than ~30 minutes of being on. I ran virus scans, hardware diagnostics, and then did a system restore to several days before it started and it still locks up. Now it seems that it mainly locks up when the computer idles for a bit. Does anybody have any ideas as to what may be the cause?

Thanks.

A:Computer Locking Up

Welcome to the forums.

Primary contenders: Heat and the Power Supply.

Try opening up your case and completely blowing out the dust using a can or two of compressed air. Make sure the fans are clear. Make sure you put the case back on before you run it again. If you leave the case off, you will have no airflow and will definitely have a heat problem.

Check to see what chrome extensions you have. List them here if you would like and people will help you. Does it happen in any other web browsers? If not, it might be a browser extension

A:my computer keeps locking up please help

Is it possible you dislodged one of your pc fans?

You have ruled out the memory so you may have unpluged something when you installing the ram. Check a all fans are working including your grafix card if it has one.

Also try using a different slot for your ram if you have an extra slot. Just incase.

Thats all I can think of.

Hi, this might be a long shot, but I share my computer with my teenage kids. They constantly muck around with the computers settings, download a heap of garbage and generally I have to reformat every couple of weeks.

Is there any way I can let them use the computer for net surfing, but lock them out from downloading, or changing settings etc. ??

If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine. If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about the Windows version you are using: What we in particular need to know is version, edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system. My computer running XP is freezing up somewhat periodically (daily, sometimes a few times a day). When it freezes, I can't move the mouse, Ctrl Alt Del, or anything. I'm just forced to manually turn it off and restart.
I don't seem to find any link between things I am doing when it freezes. The last two I remember I was surfing the internet, and another time I was watching a movie.
I have AVG which runs on schedule every night, and it hasn't found any infections lately. I also run Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and CCleaner periodically.
I'm not sure if it is related, but after I restart my Quick launch toolbar is always gone (but easy enough to get back in the start menu properties). It doesn't disappear if I shut down or restart properly.
Any ideas on how to proceed with this?
Thanks in advance

Hello, my computer has been locking up lately to the point where I have to reboot. I get to different sites and I cannot minimize them, cannot close them either by the "X" button, by right clicking on the program at the bottom of the screen and choosing "close", and in some cases even control, alt, delete will not work. Then the screen just freezes and I have to totally reboot. This was not happening before so I think I may have some kind of virus. Can you help please.

I've had a problem with my computer for the past month. The computer inevitably locks up after using internet explorer or Firefox for any significant length of time. It doesn't completely freeze up, because you can still use the mouse, however at that point, no directories, programs, or web browsers will open up. After turning the computer on and loading windows, I sometimes get an error message that states: ctfmon.exe - Application Error, The application failed to initialze properly. I ran Malwarebytes and it found one exploit, which I deleted. I'm using Windows XP. How should I proceed to fix this?

Thanks for your help,
Jason

strange. Try to make full scan for viruses from your antivirus. Also check event viewer for details about that error.
P.S. there's always trouble with XP. I would suggest to go with more stable & secured OS as Windows 7.

I have a 1.7 celeron with a m925 motherboard and antec 400 watt power ss running ME. I can only use one of the two ddr slots at 256. The other one causes crashes. Both slots work fine, both ddr's work fine. Just not together. They are crucial pc2100 ddr 256mb 266 mhz cl 2.5. I changed jumper jp1 to open 1-2, and short all j2a/b/c/d and j3a/b/c/d. any ideas?

A:DDR is locking up computer

I would check your motherboard manufactor's website and usually they have a list of what types and brands of DDR memory will work with their products. Why you would need 512MB, espically DDR, on a Celeron processors makes me wonder anyway. But if you have to have it, go to www.google.com and search for the brand of your motherboard and go to the website. They may even tell you what brand will work if you are putting 2 in at a time. If they say a different brand, just Ebay the ones you have and buy the ones they say will work. Good LUCK! Hope I helped out some!

I am operating Windows 2000 XP on an almost new Dell and my computer keeps locking up. I can be in the middle of a program and suddenly the screen will turn blue with diagonal lines all over it. There are no error messages that come up nor have I had any in the past. The power button will not respond when I push it so I have to physically unplug my hard drive from the wall outlet to reboot. It used to only happen once a month but lately it's been once a week.

Any ideas?? Hardware or software problem?

Thanks!
Becky

A:Help! Computer keeps locking up!!

if its under warranty - have a chat with dell

could be a driver or hardware

have a look at event viewer - look for entries at time of problem

Im some what computer savvy but Locking Computer up this problem has me baffled I have a laptop no name just a clone put together i got from cyberpower inc about years ago I run Windows XP I never had any issues with it and have a nice back up of my hard drive using Nortons Ghost back last year or so Like I said never Computer Locking up one issue of it freezing up and then one morning I come out and its locked up mouse wont move nothing is Computer Locking up responding SO i power down then power on it works fine then there is no set time the screen will freeze again How often does it freeze It is more likely to freeze if i let my computer idle i have it set to Computer Locking up never power down HD no screensaver nothing at all so its not locking up from that The lock ups can happen as soon as XP finishes booting up or it may last about minutes if i dont touch the computer It also will lock up if I am on the computer opening email opening web browser opening programs sometimes it wont So thats really sporadic I play World of Warcraft for long periods of time like to hours straight and when i am playing the game it never locks up but if I close the game out and walk away let the computer idle it will lock up in time I even play accounts at the same time in windowed mode for hours and it never locks up Whats even weirder is say if im downloading a torrent and if i let World of warcraft run just say I left my guy logged in and it disconnects by itself and your at the disconnect screen you have all that animation still going on while the game is running like that i can have a torrent downloading all night and the computer never freezes up as long as WoW is running But if you close world of warcraft the computer will eventually lock up if you let it idle Things I have done to help troubleshoot it Memory gigs gig stick each I have run memtest all tests for about hours no issues found also swapped memory out still locks up hard drive ran specific diagnostic tester for my hard drive I did have and it found no issues even swapped it with a new hard drive and re installed every thing fresh still locked up after you let it idle I can rule out overheating even though my computer will get hot if you let it sit on the table so I have it propped up so it gets plenty of air If it were overheating I would not be able to play WoW accounts for hours and hours thats alot of strain besides like i said above close out the game and the computer will lock up if let idle I put in another new hard drive fresh install same issues Now here it gets interesting if i boot the computer is SAFE mode and leave it come out hours later it does NOT lock up Which makes you think its a software issue instead of a hardware issue But that cant be possible because I restored my back up data the first couple times this problem ever happened with my nortons ghost So if it ran fine back then it should ran fine again But it locks up if let idle I have had the ethernet cable plugged in and out locks up either way wifi on and off locks up either way It even locked up while typing this long message thank goodness for firefox saving data Remember when i said it never locked up when I play wow it will lock up if you minimize WoW and go out to do something else on the computer or let it idle sometimes it will sometimes it wont So as you can see this is a very frustrating issue because you think its hardware then you think its software and back and forth Why does it lock up when left idle more often then if im doing something active on the computer Why does it not lock up while playing a animated game like world of warcraft Why doesnt it lock up in safe mode Its so weird yes drivers are updated no there is no viruses malware besides hard drive would be clean anyway from doign fresh installs My antivirus I use is Avast I also have registry mechanic for my registry and malwarebytes for any maleware I have done fresh installs and not installed anything no drivers no programs and... A:computer always locking up

Add remove programs – remove MYWAY or MYBAR

That is an old HJT version

http://thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe - double click the DL file
And let it extract to its default folder C:\Program FIles\HiJackThis, run it from there

Print this and boot to safe mode (Start tapping F8 at the first black screen after power up)
Fix these with HJT
