Acer R3-471T Shutdown/Hibernate problems

Q: Acer R3-471T Shutdown/Hibernate problems

Hello everyone. As the title says, i have problems with both shutdown and hibernate procedures. There are many times when i try to shutdown or hibernate the laptop, the screen turns black, but the laptop still works, and it won't shutdown/hibernate, which forces me to close the laptop from the power button. Some of the times it works. So if anyone knows what the problem might be...it would be amazing. Thank you and a good day.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So I just got this new laptop and so far I love everything about it! The only problem is that ocassionaly the display driver would crash and then restart itself successfully. This happens whenever I do browsing and light gaming. If anyone has a solution to this problem, it would be greatly appreciated

Intel has a stable driver release dated 3/8/2016 for HD520 graphics. The i5-6200U found in this laptop is specifically mentioned. This driver can not be installed on the 471T by any traditional/standard means. Acer needs to package a newer driver release for this laptop desperately. Doesn't matter what I do, this machine is plagued with constant GPU driver crashes, especially while browsing the web (browser choice doesn't matter). This is a WIDELY KNOWN issue with skylake laptops, and is largely solved by a driver update, but this can not be done without an Acer packacged driver release. Running 5 months behind schedule on driver releases is not even reasonable. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for your question, but it does sound like a good idea if the technology is catching up. I would like to suggest taking a look at our Idea's platform (linked up top) and submitting this there. This is a great way for you to  find other users who are looking for these features and to show us how important these features are.

I had Windows 8 when I purchased this laptop. I upgraded to Windows 10 later on. Recently, the laptop had been giving trouble when installing some Windows 10 update (specifically KB3172729). Right now, it won't boot Windows at all and I am looking to do a clean installation of Windows 10. The problem is I don't have the key. Is it possible to find out the key for either Windows 8/8.1/10?

I am under the impression that both method uses same amount of power in terms of power saving feature. Hibernating makes it quicker to load windows instead of full boot up from shutdown but hibernating the system can also cause errors. Thus, the slow down and reboot. What would you recommend?

i use the sleep function a lot because i like to get straight back into whatever i was doing. I was wondering if i could use hibernate instead of shutdown on my pc so i can come straight back in the morning & carry on with whatever i was doing.

Is it safe to do this? And can i turn off my mains supply without affecting my hibernated pc?

cheers

A:Hibernate vs Shutdown

Hi Fieseler,

Yes, you can use hibernate instead of shutdown if you would like to. It is not as fast as using sleep. Instead it's about the same speed as a regular shutdown, but you can pick up where you left off unlike a shutdown.

Unlike using Sleep, you can cut power to the computer using hibernate and still resume where you left off.

The decriptions in steps 6, 7, and 8 in STEP TWO of this tutorial may help to.
Power Options and Sleep Mode Problems

Hope this helps,

Whenever I try and shut my computer down, or put it into hibernate, it restarts the computer:

Power button - restarts when it should turn it off
Start>Turn Off Computer>Turn Off - Restarts it
Hibernate - The 'Hibernating' bar reaches the end, then it restarts. When it restarts after hibernate, everything appears already loaded (just as if I had brought it out of hibernate the proper way).

I know that there is a common problem with the 'Automatic restart' with Windows error reporting, but I have tried the fixes for that, to no success.

I have installed no new software recently, and changed no settings that I know of.

Any ideas what could be wrong?
Could it be a hardware problem, and if so, what could cause it?

Hi,

Please help me to overcome with my Laptop?s unique problem.

I have got HP Pavilion 9646em, AMD Turin 64 x 2 TL 58 Processor, 1.9 GHz, 1600, MHz FSB, 1 MB Cache, 2 GB, 160 GB, Window Vista (R) Home Premium. The laptop is four months old.

My laptop used to show shutdown, restart & hibernate options in its start menu, but for last around one month it does not show shutdown restart & hibernate option. In this case, every time, when I want to shutdown or restart my laptop, I need to go for ?switch user? option first and then shut it down from there which is time consuming.

I am the only registered user in this laptop & there is no other user account in the laptop.

A:Shutdown, Restart & Hibernate

I've had this before. I had to create another Administrator user and then transfer everything from my original login onto the new account then delete your old account. I'd picked up some virus from somewhere which caused this. This will get your proper shutdown menu back.

A:BSOD and shutdown when trying to hibernate

there are known issues with Win7 and sleep/hibernate. the usual solution is to turn off sleep/hibernate, but that's not always practical for laptop users. You could turn it off and see if that helps. I don't know of any workarounds for this but someone else on the forum might.

My wife's Acer Aspire came with WXP. The hibernate button worked. Following a crash, I installed WXP that I used to have on my desktop. When she clicks on the start button>shutdown, she gets three options: Hibernate(greyed and unavailable), Restart, Shut down. When I go to Control Panel>Power Options, there is nothing available to turn on the Hibernate function. How do I fix this?

Greetings. This subject has been well discussed but I haven't seen this particular problem. Hibernate has been working fine on my fairly state of the art PC (WinXP up-to-date, nothing changed, added or removed recently) for ages. Suddenly, on wakeup, it gets to desktop, icons and taskbar and bye bye, shuts down. Just once it has hung before the icons and taskbar phase. Advice seems to suggest not to use standby, but it was working OK, so can I cure the problem, please?

Desktops do not have the Power icon in the taskbar notification area only. They still have one in the Control Panel (Classic View) to adjust the power settings though.

For the past few days Windows refuses to shutdown. Everytime I select the sleep, hibernate or shutdown options it will reboot/reawaken straight away. I have tested the RAM which had no problems, I reinstalled Windows completely which didn't help & I checked power settings in BIOS to disable auto-restart. Laptop works fine when on, just refuses to power down - only holding the power button will get it to stop doing anything! Very annoying, can anyone help? Cheers.

A:Laptop will not sleep, hibernate or shutdown

Hello cakefish,
I hope this isn't a virus or some malware. I would force a hard shut down and then after waiting 20-30 seconds then boot into safe mode with networking. Update and run your Anti-virus and Malwarebytes several times and with luck it will pick something up and clean it out of your system.

After re-reading: When you re-installed W7 did you do a clean install where you formatted your drive again?

I just upgraded to Windows Enterprise x RTM yesterday and have noticed an annoying problem that wasn't present under Windows Enterprise x which I was running previously Specifically the machine will not sleep will not hibernate and hibernate, WOL or Win8 RTM: shutdown sleep, Can't will not shut down When any of the three are attempted they appear to succeed but then the Win8 RTM: Can't sleep, hibernate, shutdown or WOL computer will immediately wake up again In the case of a shutdown the computer will actually power completely off and then Win8 RTM: Can't sleep, hibernate, shutdown or WOL start right back up immediately I never used to sleep the machine in Windows but I know the hibernation used to work and certainly shutting down did as well as I shut the machine down every night In the event viewer I have a Power-Troubleshooter event ID every time the machine wakes back up from an attempted sleep hibernation or shutdown but it always indicates that the wake source is quot Unknown quot I have tried unplugging every single Ethernet USB and eSATA cable from the PC until nothing was left plugged in but the monitors audio out and AC power -- just in case a device was sending a magic packet or some kind of wake-up signal Even so I still experienced the same immediate waking problems on shutdown hibernate or sleep I was able to solve the inability to shut down by disabling Windows 's quot Fast Startup quot option which as I understand it uses a kind of hybrid hibernation It makes sense that this would help since hibernation is not working properly on my system At least with quot Fast Startup quot disabled I can actually shut the machine down It's a pity though because I really liked Fast Startup's performance I've tried installing the authentic manufacturer drivers for my chipset Intel ICH series onboard LAN adapters and so forth in case the generic Microsoft drivers were at fault The specific driver installation seemed to work fine but my problem remains Full system specs are in my profile but it's kind of an old box I put together in late Core components of possible relevance to this issue are an Asus P W DH Deluxe motherboard and Seasonic S W power supply The motherboard is running the very latest BIOS revision My Windows installation was an in-place upgrade of my previous Windows installation everything seems to be working fine except for the weird power stuff Here's one other thing I should note which concerns me somewhat as it is related by definition In the P W DH Deluxe's BIOS there is an quot ACPI Support quot option which defaults to quot Disabled quot Back when I built the machine I left it alone so it has been disabled this whole time During my troubleshooting of these issues earlier tonight I decided to try switching it to quot Enabled quot to see if it would have any effect It has not fixed the issues at all but it does make me wonder Is there any way to tell whether Windows has correctly identified the system as being ACPI compliant I think I remember in the old days WinXP used to have to be completely reinstalled when that switch was flipped Additionally and much to my consternation I can no longer use Wake On LAN I've actually fixed the WoL issue I had to go into Device Manager find my network adapter and get the properties of it -- then on the Advanced tab find the property called quot Wake From Shutdown quot and set it to quot On quot This must have been either a new property in the Win driver for my network adapter or was reset back to Off for some reason when I did the Win - gt Win upgrade Thanks in advance to anyone for any ideas about my sleep hibernation troubles

A:Win8 RTM: Can't sleep, hibernate, shutdown or WOL

I've put together some additional information on this issue, though I am not really any closer to solving it.

If I try to put the computer to sleep, after it immediately wakes itself back up, the process "System interrupts" starts perpetually chewing 10-20% of CPU cycles. This suggests a driver or a hardware problem somewhere. I've tried disabling my onboard network adapters, disabling all of my audio inputs and killing the print spooler process, but none of these tricks helped. I might have to keep going down the list in Device Manager and disabling near everything in a bid to find out what it is.

Also, I've used the powercfg command line tool to run some diagnostics on the sleeping / hibernation issue. In running powercfg /requests, I found that \FileSystem\srvnet has recently sent requests to my machine. However, after changing my power profile to allow the computer to sleep even in the event of filesharing activity, and furthermore setting up a request override for srvnet, I found that the computer is still waking up right away and the problem remains unsolved. It even refuses to sleep when powercfg /requests lists no requests whatsoever for any of the categories.

I also ran powercfg /energy and then tried putting the machine to sleep; the resulting energy report informed me that I have four USB devices not entering the Selective Suspend state, but also claims that this issue will not prevent the system from sleeping. The only other error in the energy report is the fact that PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) has been disabled due to a known incompatibility with the hardware in my computer, whatever that may be.

Edit: I restarted in Safe Mode with command prompt access to test further. Still had the same sleep/hibernation problem there!

Still fishing for clues. If anyone's got any further suggestions, please let me know.

I have a Dell Dimension Vista Home Premium Computer that I just purchased. I have worked with other Windows Vista Machines and all had the option to Hibernate rather than shut down or sleep. I would prefer to utilize Hibernate but the option is not available. I have read that the new power method is Hybrid. Why is it that other Windows Vista machines do have Hibernation and mine doesn't. Is there a box I can check stating that I want to be able to Hibernate the computer. I know that there was one in Windows XP.

Thanks in advance for any comments and suggestions. This is driving me crazy. My dad has two Vista machines. One has Vista Ultimate and the other is a laptop with Vista Home Premium. Both have the option to hibernate. What is up with my machine?

Hello,

So I am stumped I have searched the net over and over. So I have come here for some advice.

Win 7
- x86 (32-bit) or x64 ?
-- x64
- the original installed OS on the system?
-- 32 bit vista
- an OEM or full retail version?
-- Full Retail = you purchased it from retailer
- What is the age of system (hardware)?
-- 1 1/2 years or so
- What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?)
-- First Install of 7, trying to avoid a new install (11 JAN 11 for install)

I had read something about Biometrics being an issue, found Hot Fix from MS, that didnt work
then un-installed the biometrics device completly and didnt stop the crashes.

updated all of my drivers.

tried a registry cleaner...

I dont know whats up.

It was happening prior to an install of 8 gigs of RAM 3 before.

Any help is greatly appreciated, I am at a loss.
Thank you
Mike

Please help.

I am getting a BSOD during hibernate, restart etc. The problem is fixed by restoring the laptop to factory state but after a month or so the problem starts again.

I have run the diagnostic tool and uploaded the zipped file.

Please let me know if you need any more info.

Many thanks in anticipation of your help.

I have an HP longer Shutdown Sleep and Hibernate than take Pavilion tx tablet PC When I shutdown Vista Home Premium bit it takes a few seconds Putting into sleep mode takes seconds Putting into hibernation - even longer The system comes out of sleep almost instantly A cold boot versus starting from hibernation takes about the same amount of time - although hibernation seems to take a bit longer I have the very same issue on my HP desktop My wife's IBM IdeaPad has the same issue with hibernate - but Sleep and Hibernate take longer than Shutdown her sleep function works perfectly All units have Vista Home Premium bit Is hibernate pretty much useless in Vista If one of the main points of hibernation is to get on and off a PC faster why does it take longer than a cold boot With sleep why does putting my HP pcs to sleep take so long yet my wife's IBM goes off almost instantly When I spoke to HP they basically told me that using sleep or hibernate is a waste of time in Vista Is it Vista or is it HP Any help is appreciated Dave

My laptop drive automatically ejects on shutdown or when it goes to hibernate/sleep mode. This happens only when the laptop is connected to a power outlet. When it is running on battery, it doesn't eject on shutdown or hibernate, but ejects when it goes into sleep mode.

I tried a fresh install of W7 SP1 x64 but it did not solve the issue. I have set the booting sequence to HDD, USB, ODD and BIOS ver is Insyde 1.8.

Drive hardware ID is MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ8C0__1.01_

Please help in resolving this issue.

Thanks

I ve recently run into an interesting problem and I could really use some help I have an ASUS G JX-X laptop with GB RAM GB chips I ve had this computer for about months without any problems A couple Computer freezes shutdown/hibernate on of days ago I noticed that the computer hung up when trying to hibernate The screen was Computer freezes on shutdown/hibernate black and the hard drive light was off but the Computer freezes on shutdown/hibernate touchpad wireless bluetooth and power lights remained on I left it and went to work and when I returned it was still in this state so I held the power button to shut it down The computer started normally but then that night when I went to shut the computer down it did the same thing After searching the forums I made some Computer freezes on shutdown/hibernate changes to disable the services at start up in an attempt to narrow down the problem and I discover that is I choose restart the computer shuts down and restarts fine although it sits with the screen black and the lights on for a while It will not shut down or hibernate though Since that time I ve searched the forums and this is what I ve done to try and figure out what s going on I thought I might have gotten a driver update so I looked at Windows Update and I hadn t gotten anything since I did get one on but that was after I started having problems Using msconfig I disabled the start up services except MS and start up items to see if that helped and rebooted The reboot worked but then the shutdown failed again I read in some forums that it might be related to the wireless so I used the switch on the front of the computer to turn off wireless and bluetooth before shutting down - no luck I thought it might be a problem with the memory since that s a relatively recent upgrade so I created a boot CD and ran memtest It ran all night through passes and no errors I ran chkdsk on the hard drive just to be safe and it didn t find any errors I checked to see if ClearPageFileAtShutdown was set to in the registry but it is I checked to make sure that the bios is up to date and it is version At this stage I m really at a loss on what to do next to solve this Can anyone help Thanks

I asked this on the Hardware forum, but I think its more suitable here:

Whenever I try and shut my computer down, or put it into hibernate, it restarts the computer:

Power button - restarts when it should turn it off
Start>Turn Off Computer>Turn Off - Restarts it
Hibernate - The 'Hibernating' bar reaches the end, then it restarts. When it restarts after hibernate, everything appears already loaded (just as if I had brought it out of hibernate the proper way).

I have tried all the common problem, which I found on google (Such as the uatomatic restart problem), all to no effect.

I have installed no new software recently, and changed no settings that I know of.

Any ideas what could be wrong?
Could it be a hardware problem, and if so, what could cause it?

Hi,

I have HCL ICON 1015 laptop, I have brand new HDD installed and just installed Windows 7.

My problem is when I shutdown my laptop every thing looks fine i.e. logging off, shutting down. But after couple of minutes the rotating wheel in front of "SHUTTING DOWN" stops rotating, power LED stays on and fan also stays on. HDD stops blinking.

My laptop is 3 years old and power LED is no longer as bright as it used be.

Thanks for you time and consideration.

Welcome to SevenForums lovelymoon.

You can do this via Power Options in Control Panel.

Start > Control Panel > Search for Power Options > Edit Power Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings.

Then scroll down to 'Power buttons and lid' Then from the drop down menu click Hibernate.

Hi all,

For about a year and a half now i have owned a htpc based on a DFI P55-T36 board.
Everything is running great and i'm very content ever since i switched to XBMC software etc. etc.

There's just one problem for me...
No matter what i do, Sleep mode will not work correctly with this machine.

Also...i have recently purchased a Ortek VRC-1100 remote which works very well with MCE and XBMC out of the box.
This remote has a power button which will send the keyboard command to put the machine to sleep (i believe its Win + S?).

Anyway, in both of these cases i would very much like to Shutdown the PC rather then use Sleep mode at all.

Is there any way to disable sleep mode entirely in Windows 7?

So whenever a sleep mode command is sent, the PC will simply shutdown?

A:Turn Sleep/Hibernate mode into Shutdown?

That would be in your Power managment settings you set it to NEVER it will not go to sleep or Hibernate

I need to be able to wake my computer from sleep. This worked perfectly in Windows 7 before I upgraded but now it is broken. I have exhausted everything I can think of and find online:
My NIC is the only wake armed deviceIn the device manager it's set to wake on magic packetIn the device manager it's set to never be turned off to conserve powerIn Power Button options I've tried toggling fast bootIn Advanced power options I've tried toggling allow hybrid sleep

WoL works when I shut the computer down but not from sleep or hibernate.

This guy seems to be in a similar situation: Phil Pendlebury – Windows 8 – Wake Over LAN – It Works! – It but he was able to make it work from hibernate.

I would be OK with just using Hibernate if it was working but the MS KB article on WoL says that it is supported in S3 sleep: Wake-on-LAN behavior in Windows 8

Any ideas? Thanks!

A:WoL works from full shutdown but not sleep or hibernate

I am having the same issue. WOL only working from full shut down but not sleep or hibernate.

If you manage to fix it I'd love to know.

Quoting from an article by MS themselves.
Wake-on-LAN behavior in Windows 8

Windows 8: In Windows 8, the default shutdown behavior puts the system into hybrid shutdown (S4) and all devices are put into D3. Remote Wake-On-LAN from hybrid shutdown (S4) or classic shutdown (S5) is unsupported. Network adapters are explicitly not armed for Wake-On-LAN in both the classic shutdown (S5) and hybrid shutdown (S4) cases because users expect zero power consumption and battery drain in the shutdown state. This behavior removes the possibility of spurious wakes when explicit shutdown was requested. As a result, Wake-On-LAN is only supported from sleep (S3) or hibernate (S4) in Windows 8.

So according to them WOL isn't supposed to work from shutdown but only sleep or hibernate. I don't really care for wake from shutdown, I just want wake from sleep to work

I have been trying to figure this out for awhile now.  Any time I try to shutdown my computer, put it to sleep or hibernate it just hangs then crashes.  I have tried different video drivers, Windows updates and lots of searching around.  I do have an SSD drive with the operating system and a few apps and a secondary platter drive for storage and other apps.  I think it has something to do with that setup and also a driver.

I am new to this forum so please let me know what other information I can provide.  For some reason I cannot paste into the forum post so I am attaching my BlueScreenView BSOD output and a link to my Speccy profile.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

A:Windows 8.1 cannot shutdown, sleep or hibernate, BSOD

Suggest you go back to using Windows 8.  Only way that 8.1 is not going to work properly, is if you did not install the device drivers for the computer.  Your Speccy is garbage.  Suggest you go to your computer or motherboard manufacturer's website and see if they have Windows 8 device drivers available.

It doesn't appear that your SSD is on the QVL list for this motherboard. Have you tried the 4801 beta BIOS?Have you replaced the ASMedia and Marvell SATA controller drivers (uninstall, then install a freshly downloaded copy)? The 0xC000007B error is a BAD IMAGE error.Has this error occurred both on W7 and W10? Try to hibernate the system, then recover.Do this 3 times, then lets have a look at these 2 sets of reports:1)  Please run this report collecting tool (even though you may not be experiencing BSOD's) so that we can provide a complete analysis: (from the pinned topic at the top of the forum)   http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/576314/blue-screen-of-death-bsod-posting-instructions-windows-10-81-8-7-vista/FYI - I don't often use the Perfmon report, so if it doesn't work please just let me know.2)  Please do the following:- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")- right click on the "Administrative Events" heading- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."- save the file as Admin.evtx- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility:  http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

OK I installed SP 2, all the required security patches (before and after) and now I am having problems with hibernate (and an annoyance with standby.)

When I hit the power button, instead of invoking hibernate (as it always did) it shutsdown.

I have reset the power options, and it seems to work once or twice, then it tries to shut down again. I can hibernate by using the Start Menu - turn computer off menu - shift/standby = hibernate. But this bites.

Also I have standby set to not invoke the login screen when it comes out of standby, but just resume (invoking the login interupts some of my music software.) This also does not seem to be impacted by the settings I have in power options.

Help.

A:XP SP2 - hitting power button causes shutdown not hibernate

Two things you have to do.

Set your buttons up in the BIOS to function as you want, if said options exist in the BIOS.
Set up your buttons in the "Power" section of the Control panel.

If that doesn't fix it, post some more.

Lots of discussion about lack of a quickly accessible shutdown, restart links in std W8 desktop.
I am aware you can create shortcuts, pin to task-bar , install shells etc.
I wanted a more simple solution (IMHO) , therefore I have created this gadget to use less space and clutter.

If you wish to give it a try: Download alarm.gadget.zip, unzip alarm.gadget to desktop
Select, Right click and then install. (do not use open will just unzip the gadget again
as .gadgets are only zipped up collections of files/folders).

Toying with the idea of creating a similar one with just 12 shortcuts
but not having played with W8 enough I am not sure which would be really useful
Any suggestions welcome

Hello knowledgeable forum users I was hoping for some help My computer crashes on shutdown restart and I suspect hibernate I think that is what causes them while it sits idle It was more broken yesterday than it is now as I have seemingly solved some of the problems I have included some history below just in case it's useful I got back from a trip month exchange and installed windows updates only KB failed then it worked when windows tried again When I opened Windows after that my NIC card and several USB drivers weren't working code I think certain dlls didn't load I had to disable reenable each device usb one in order to get them working Occasionally the system would hang while I did this usually on the last USB - forcing a manual power off I eventually rolled back to a restore solved before I left for my exchange and updated my BIOS chipset and USB to the latest from the manu's site I figure windows installed the new USB drivers Renases USB Host Controller Root Hub without any on (suspected) Crash Restart and Shutdown, Hibernate regard to my chipset bios version and this somehow caused the problem - though I have no evidence and little experience in this area Windows was also telling me Skype wasn't working though it appeared to be working fine it gave mo the fix a problem with dialogue I have re-installed Skype since Now everything seems to be working NIC USB Crash on Shutdown, Restart and (suspected) Hibernate etc except for the crashes When it crashes I see a BSOD A BSOD was happening earlier while the NIC USB were acting up also but there appear to be no logs for those These are in fact the only logs I have and this has happened several times Perhaps these logs persist because my last startup shutdown was done in safe mode Maybe the SSD has something to do with the vanishing logs Halp

A:Windows 7 doesnt sleep-hibernate or shutdown..:(

It's often a piece of incompatible hardware which prevents sleep or shutdown from operating normally, unless it used to work properly until recently, in which case it may be necessary to repair your Windows installation.

Start off by running the System File Checker:

Start >> Run

Type SFC /SCANNOW

Howdy y'all I am dealing with quite the annoying problem that has been plaguing me for a couple weeks now When i either hit the power key or select hibernate shutdown restart from the start menu my laptop will give me the blue screen explaining that a memory dump dump in memory restart Shutdown/hibernate and results has been initiated On this screen it references Shutdown/hibernate results in memory dump and restart usbhub sys as the culprit I did a little googling to find out how to debug memory dumps and I downloaded and installed the WinDbg utility The problem is that the memory dmp file in the Windows folder lists June th as the date which is not current as I have recreated this memory dumping situation a few times today And in the minidumps folder I see one from and a couple from which seem out dated as well In looking into these dumps with WinDbg i see a bunch of references to libusb sys which is something I know that I have installed in the recent past in conjunction with another utility to use my Playstation controller over USB I also installed a cheesy program called WinDS which installs custom drivers into my laptops built in bluetooth adapter allowing use of the Playstation controller over Bluetooth I have since uninstalled this software which also uninstalls the custom drivers from my bluetooth adapter I have run a full virus scan with AVG and ran a scan with SpyBot SpyBot found a couple things and repaired them but they did not affect this problem in anyway that I'm aware of I am dual-booting Vista SP and Windows Ultimate Windows runs just fine and does not display any of these symptoms So I'm obviously not too sure what I'm looking for in the debug data just trying to find a little guidance in the direction of the problem If there is a way to force it to find an up to date dump to debug I'm sure that would be very effective I don't know all there is to know but I'm good at following directions Thanks for any help in advance My system specs are Dell XPS M Laptop Windows Vista Home Premium SP -bit GB RAM Ghz Core Duo Website for WinDS http www winds com en index htm

A:Shutdown/hibernate results in memory dump and restart

Dump files are stored in C:\Windows\Minidump, or as the file MEMORY.DMP in the C:\Windows directory (which is overwritten with each memory dump). If nothing is located there, search the entire hard drive for files ending in .dmp There are many reasons for a dump file not being created - so that will be a part of the analysis.

You've done most of what is needed (and thanks for that!). Depending on what you removed with the SpyBot, there may/may not be a malware component to this issue.

Frequently hibernate and sleep issues are due to a corruption in the video drivers. So I'd suggest:
- Downloading the latest video driver for your system from here: http://support.dell.com/support/down...&catid=&impid=
- Uninstall your current video drivers through Control Panel...Programs...Uninstall a program.
- Reboot the system (dismissing any "Found New Hardware" dialogs that may occur).
- double click on the downloaded file to install the new drivers.

If this doesn't solve the problem, then please provide us with the information in this post: http://www.techsupportforum.com/1871981-post2.html

Just FYI, here's my blog post on analyzing these files: http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/d...d-02oct08.html
You'll notice in paragraph G that there are some additional commands, try them to see what you get.
Also, there's a link at the bottom to a general description of how to analyze the debugger's output.

We've written an application that lives on the tablet PC that is basically a timeclock for hourly employees. The timeclock has been running just fine for a week now, and all of a sudden, it's decided to standby or hibernate after 30 minutes. How can the tablet change it's settings like that? Any help on where I can look for an answer would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Thanks!

My Computer is stuck on "preparing to hibernate"! I can't perform any of the sugestions to remedy, because I can neither turn off my laptop or perform any other functions. The off button does not shut it off. Pulling the power-pack plug doesn't work because the battery kicks in. When the battery charge ran out, plugging in the power-pack resulted in bringing up the same blue screen message "Preparing to Hibernate. Escape doesn't work. It has been stuck this way for the last three days. What can I do to turn it off so I can even reboot or remove this screen. Is it a virus like the shutting down windows
blue screen virus?

A:Stuck on stupid / Shutdown locked on Preparing to Hibernate

Hi there welcome to TSF;

In my opinion MS have never sucessfully got the power management features to work properly in any OS! First thing I always do is disable all that stuff! - Sorry doesn't help you now I k

This is very strange. Can you pull the mains power and pull the battery off, leave for, let's say 20 seconds, connect battery and mains power and try again?

Does it go through it's Power On Self Test (i.e. displays manufacturers splash screen, etc) or go straight to this blue screen? Does the blue screen say anything else, i.e. any codes etc?

For the past month or so, I've had no sound output from speakers or headphone jack, and attempting to go into sleep mode has resulted in an instant shutdown no matter how sleep mode is started (via Start menu or by closing the lid.)

I suspect the problem is related to the audio problem, because I had it do the same thing booted into Ubuntu from a live CD. The sound card appears to be functioning normally inside Windows (it's configurable, the mixer indicates it's playing) and I have sound over HDMI, but the onboard speakers and headphone jack don't work.

The BIOS on this machine won't let me configure anything or I'd just disable the on-board audio entirely and see if that fixes it. As it stands right now, trying to uninstall the sound card just results in it reinstalling on my next reboot.

I'm open to any suggestions, advice or voodoo curses anyone has to recommend.

What happens if you disable the sound card instead of uninstalling it? Does that help with the sleep issues?

To disable:
1. Click Start Menu
2. Right click My Computer
3. Click Manage
4. Select Device Manager from the left pane
5. Go to Sound, video and game controllers
6. Select the device that is not part of your HDMI system
7. Right click that device and select disable

I will look through your attachment while awaiting your answer.

AOA n Hi

I have found that sleep and hibernate options are disabled with ShutDown Buttons. due to this, when lid is down, my laptop is still working.
Also, when i go to controlPAnel<<Power Options << then ....there is options of "Change settings that are currently unavailable" when i click it, options becomes unvisible. Also in the Power Plan Options...(on the same window/tab), When i click ComboBox for Battery and Plugged in......There are no Options of Sleep or Hibernate, only "Do nothing" and "ShutDown" options are there.

Please help. Thanks in anticipation.

A:Sleep and Hibernate options are disabled with ShutDown Button

1.) Is your laptop up to date with the latest drivers?

See here: Automatically Find HP Updates | HP Support

That website will search your HP laptop for driver updates. Download and install all driver updates found.

2.) Try this as well: Microsoft fix it-enable hibernation

That is a microsoft fix it that will enable hibernation for you.

Have you checked Event viewer?

Quote:
Type eventvwr in search and go to the windows log>application tab & system tabs.

Look for red errors that say app hang, or app crash, or anything related to the current activity / problem.
When you find them either take a screenshot of them and upload them to us, or note the event ID and source codes and look them up in Google.

Hi all . This is my problem, when i open start menu and click on white arrow, the options shutdown, restart, hibernate and sleep are missing. Also if i try shutdown my PC using Alt+F4 it will not respond. I can close a program using Alt+F4 but it will now react when i need to shutdown my PC with it, if you know what i mean. I think i have this problem since I installed SP1 . for now i use red button as shutdown button but it is really annoying because something is missing, I like it all to be in its place. You can see attachment for some details.

EDIT: i have vista home premium so any solution that goes trough local policies editor will not work.

Welcome
For a start lets use an easy suggestion that has worked for many. Change your power settings to High Performance and not power save.
Step 2
Power Options and Sleep Mode Problems

If after trying this easy suggestion, if you still have problems, I will give you the more traditional suggestions.

Hi
After I removed a theme pack called "Vista OSX" from my pc running vista home premium, the options such as shutdown, restart are missing from the start menu. And moreover, nothing shows up even if I press Alt + F4. Is there anyway to restore them back? I already tried System Restore but it fails to restore back to an earlier point.

ps. I screen shot the start menu and attached it.

Hi rapster88 . .

Are you updated w/ Vista SP1?

What was the problem with the system restore? Do you have dual-boot Vista/XP?

Hello Laptop doesn't shutdown/hibernate/restart (HP) after windows update Yesterday I downloaded three Laptop (HP) doesn't shutdown/hibernate/restart after windows update windows updates from the prompt and ever since haven't been able to get the laptop to shutdown hibernate or restart I even tried to force shutdown by pressing down the power button but nothing happened Then I let the battery drain hoping after I switch it on after plugging it it would be fine The laptop resumed and again refused to shutdown I browsed the HP Support website and it recommended a BIOS update The BIOS update requires the model amp serial number of the laptop which I couldn't find anywhere there's no sticker carrying product info on the back so the info might be found behind the battery compartment or the battery I do not know if it's safe to extract the battery with this issue lingering How do I proceed Is there an alternate way to know what in the name of God is going on And also the window quot Restart your computer to finish installing important updates quot keeps cropping up and nothing happens when I click the 'Restart Now' option

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
I would not remove the battery
See if you can enter sfc/ scannow from command prompt I believe Option 2
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

What is your antivirus program installed ?

AHA, I found in gpedit.msc under Computer Configuration -> Windows Setting -> Security Setting -> Local Policies -> User Right Assignment is a control for Shutdown, and the group "Users" was not in the list.
I can't test to see if this worked as the computer is in NY, I'm in California and I have disconnected my OCS session, so I will update tomorrow when the user gets into work. Maybe this did the trick???Vinny http://www.intermedia.net

Hi,

Every time I try to put put my laptop to sleep, hibernate, restart it or shutdown, it stalls for about 10 minutes before giving me a Driver Power State Failure.

Having installed "WhoCrashed" and "Windbg", I was able to determine it was related to "ntkrnlmp.exe", "ndis.sys", "raspppoe.sys" and a vpn driver at one point or another. I "believe" I managed to uninstall the offending vpn driver but of course still overall have the same issue.

This appeared to occur while trying to do a windows update last week but I can't be sure. I presume, there is a out of date or corrupt driver but just can't seem to determine which one.

Many thanks in advance,

Hob

A:Driver Power State Failure on Sleep, Hibernate, Restart or Shutdown

Please remove / disable items from the startup in taskmanager
These programs could interfere with the boot process giving you trouble and increase the boot time.
Daemon tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known cause for BSOD's.
Please remove Daemon Tools and run the SPTD pass through remover.

Uninstall Daemon ToolsDownload the SPTD standalone installer and follow these steps:
Double click the executable to open itClick on the button shown below

If the button is grayed out, like in the image, there is no more SPTD installation on your system, and you can close the window

   Warning
Programs that claim to update your drivers install either the wrong or corrupted drivers.
If you have installed any driver with Driver Booster 3, please remove them as it may cause trouble.
ONLY install the drivers from your manufacturer!

Please remove your VPN software.

A:why i am not able to shutdown or restart my acer l...

There can be several reasons for unable to shutdown or restart your Acer laptop from the start menu or you can say power button on the screen. To help you troubleshoot the issue, please follow the instructions given below:- First of all, you need to check if any settings are configured in windows for Power Management in the control panel.- You can reset the Power Management settings to default:- Press ?Windows? key + ?R? key on your keyboard.- In the Run box type ?Control Panel? and hit Enter button.- Search for ?Power Options? and select Power Options from the results.- Click ?Change plan settings? next to the plan you wish to reset.- Click ?Restore default settings? for this plan, then click Yes.- Restart or Shutdown the system and check if you are able to perform it from start menu. If issue persists, You may have an application or process running in the background that is not shutting down properly. Close all tray applications that you can, make sure you close all programs first, and try again. If that works, you need to see what you have installed that may be causing this. Hope this will help you.

I have been struggling with this issue for a few days now There are major problems Start menu hangs when I click on it I have to manually bring up the Task Manager and kill explorer and start it as a new task This happens only in Normal mode and not in Safe Mode Machine hangs after I try to Shutdown hangs Shutdown/Hibernate Start menu and hangs or Hibernate in Normal mode It does say logging of and seems to go through the normal shutdown but at the very end if hangs on blank black screen and never actually shuts down unless I hold down the power button This does not happen in Safe Mode What I am working with Thinkpad T laptop Windows XP SP What I have tried - I used msconfig to turn off all services and startup programs and still no luck - Ran several Spyware programs and anti-virus programs got rid of Start menu hangs and Shutdown/Hibernate hangs anything suspicious and nothing - Ran Start menu hangs and Shutdown/Hibernate hangs HIjackthis and got rid of anything suspicious The problems started after I cleaned up some spyware from my machine using CleanUp and some other programs I also took several services and startup items out of msconfig Everything else seems to work ok like clicking on stuff on the desktop or the quick launch bar browsing the internet chat bring up explorer by clicking on an icon and navigating through the hard drive I just can't click on the Start Menu in Normal mode My hunch is the following Some service that is imperative to the start menu and or explorer hangs either because it Start menu hangs and Shutdown/Hibernate hangs being run under 'Local User' as opposed to System or Network Maybe this service is corrupt or missing or should not be running Driver issue Spyware entry in a registry key that latches on to explorer but that doesnt explain the shutdown hibernate hanging This is driving me absolutely nuts Please please help

My acer active pen is not working consistently. The screen recognizes it sometimes, and other times it does not. The only way I can get it to recognize is by power cycling the pen (taking the battery out and putting it back in), or by power cycling the laptop. I replaced the battery so I know it is not a battery issue. I have an Acer Aspire R13 (Model #R7-371T), and recently upgraded to Windows 10.  I was having this problem earlier with Win 8.1, but it seems to have gotten worse with Windows 10.  I have updated to all the most recent drivers.  Very frustrating. A:New Acer Aspire Blue Screen shutdown & noise

This laptop had a blue screen and very loud noise.

Sounds like a hardware issue.

I don't see any sign of infection in that log, which is what this section of the forum focuses on. That said...your version of HijackThis is outdated. Furthermore...

We no longer use HijackThis as our initial analysis tool, as it's not nearly as detailed as the tools we do use.

I don't believe this is a malware caused issue. Had you not posted a HijackThis log in your Windows XP topic, you might have received more detailed assistance there. You may want to repost in that topic, and ask someone to remove the HijackThis log, and pursue non-malware troubleshooting for you...or create a new topic in the Hardware section, with no HijackThis log. All such logs get referred here.

As far as the missing file in the O20 line, I'm not sure how that would affect your machine. I have that file in more than one location, system32, system32\dllcache and ServicePackFiles\I386....Windows File Protection should have replaced it.

You might do a search on your system to see if it's another location, and copy it to System32. Otherwise, you way wish to run the System File Checker

Go to Start->Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit OK. Let it scan. If it finds any files missing/corrupted, it may ask for the Windows CD. Otherwise, it will auto-close after it's done.

If after all that, you think the machine is infected, due to other symptoms...

We want all our members to perform the steps outlined in the link I'll give you below, before posting for assistance. There's a sticky at the top of this forum, and a

Please follow our pre-posting process outlined here:

After running through all the steps, you shall have a proper set of logs. Please post them in a new topic, as this one shall be closed.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

Please note that the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum is extremely busy, and it may take a while to receive a reply.

My Acer Aspire is about 18 months old and I am encountering a problem for a few days now that had never happened before. Usually what happens is I'm playing a game and if I want to make a change in the screen resolution or if I do ctrl+alt+suppr the screen turns black and nothing works. The mouse pointer doesn't appear, the keyboard doesn't answer and my only solution is to force it off by pressing the power button for a few seconds and to turn it back on.I thought it was due to hard drive used at 100% but it seems not, and I really have no idea what it could be. The thing is I've noticed several problems of screen freezing and laptop being slower than usual right after I had installed Windows 10 (about 3 weeks ago). Could this be related?I really need help, please this laptop was already 1000$ I'm not buying a new one so soon.
