I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

For the last 3 days, whenever i close down either a word file, excel file or access file (but not Powerpoint) i get illegal op messages.

They say: Winword caused an invalid page fault in module OLE32.dll at 014f:7ff61738;

Excel caused an invalid page fault in module OLE32.dll at 014f:7ff61758;

MSAccess caused an invalid page fault in module OLE32.dll at 014f:7ff61738

I have office 97, i can open the files no problem, and can save the file, but when i either save as or close the file these messages come up about 75% of the time.

I have done a virus check and have not changed any settings on my computer.

It does not give me the message when i close down a newly created file, but only existing files on our network. It was working fine previously.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,

I am running office 2000, and have been being helped on the malware board. They suggested I come here with an issue with office.

A few days ago my office programs have been closing automatically when I try to open them. Excel for example will close once I select a menu option, and then try to select a sub option like FORMAT ROW, when y=trying to select row excel closes.

I have tried uninstalling and re installing, with no change to the problem.

Thanks for your help.

I have a PC in shop that exhibits the following:

Internet Explorer (6 SP 1) and Outlook Express closes within seconds of opening. IE will show connecting to the default MSN home page just before closing.

Firefox and Netscape (7.2) will both run and operate on the net.

AVG, Spybot, Spyware Guardian and Blaster are on the machine. CWshredder has been run, Hijackthis was used to clean up the unneeded entries. Houcall.trendmicro.com can't be run as it doesn't run (seemingly) on Firefox, and the manual download for netscape can't see the directory (plugins), even when directed to it.

Using task manager and closing every process possible, IE and OE are still closed ASAP. Furthermore, Services.MSC is closed ASAP as is System Restore. MMC will launch, but if you try to go to any of the tools it closes. Even using Windows Explorer and typing in a url results in closing of the WE window once it hits the web site.

An XP Home SP2 CD has been used to repair restore (in process again now) the installation with no change.

Am looking for a possible solution that doesn't involve a fresh install (full install or slicking the machine).

When I close a Windows 8.1 applcation, I'm bored to wait for a long (3 sec.) to close it automatically (when I swipe it to the bottom and wait 3 seconds for it to close). Is there a method to apply if I want to change this timeout?

Hi Just having a weird problem with Windows When I am using earphones or my laptop speakers and then I close the lid on my laptop it causes a great reduction in the volume of Windows automatically to Laptop reduce 7, causes Closing volume Lid the sound output automatically While the laptop lid is still open the volume on all programs remains normal However when I close my laptop lid it seems Windows automatically reduces the volume Let's say I put the volume on my laptop to units in the sound mixer All programs I am using are set to use the volume the sound output device is using so everything else is also at units including Media Player Classic I am usually using Media Player Classic to play some FLAC music I usually have earphones connected but Windows 7, Closing Laptop Lid causes volume to automatically reduce this issue recurs Windows 7, Closing Laptop Lid causes volume to automatically reduce without them as well When I close my laptop in about seconds the sound volume will automatically reduce to units in the Volume Mixer in the taskbar This sound reduction also only applies to the program I am currently using to play music e g MPC or iTunes the two which I've tried so far After re-opening my laptop I check the Volume Mixer Windows 7, Closing Laptop Lid causes volume to automatically reduce and it shows only MPC or iTunes sound output is reduced The system device speakers will still be at units volume This is really frustrating because I like to turn on some music and then close my laptop so I can study but I find I have to constantly adjust volume because Windows is deciding to automatically adjust the volume for me which I simply don't need I understand how it can be helpful but for me it is just a nuisance This is what the Volume Mixer looks like just after starting playback in MPC This is an example of what the Volume Mixer from the taskbar looks like after I close and then re-open my laptop lid It just shows MPC reducing volume while all other volumes which aren't outputting anything remain at the normal volume I set before closing the laptop lid If anyone could help with this issue it would be greatly appreciated

A:Windows 7, Closing Laptop Lid causes volume to automatically reduce

Hello,

I was able to resolve this by the following:

Right-Click the sound icon, and click "Playback Devices". There should be a tab that says "Communications" on the very right. If yours shows "Reduce the volume of other sounds by 80%", setting this to "Do Nothing" will correct your issue, as it did for me (this was irritating me just as much as it did you).

A:Constant beeping on startup, and windows automatically closing. Web browsers stopping

Constant beeping is always some sort of warning. Does your laptop have a video card that could possibly have become disconnected? Is your memory seated tightly. When a ram module becomes loose, it too can cause a beeping. Good Luck. I'm sorry, but I don't know anything about laptops otherwise.

Hi there
I've posted on the Ms Office section in the W7 Forum info that Windows Live Messenger is closing in Mar 2013 and being replaced by SKYPE (which Ms bought sometime in 2011.

I know a lot of Ms office users use Live messenger so prepare for the switch. Ms Lync is fine if you have a Lync server otherwise SKYPE isn't too bad.

Cheers
jimbo

A:Ms office users -- Note Windows Live Messenger is closing Mar 2013

Hi Jimbo45, I noticed the article on the BBC Home page while looking for UK News - you may have noticed that BBC shipped almost all their staff to USA to report on the election and they call that news (?)
However back to the point. Having read the article I then via Skype downloaded the Metro UI Tile for Skype and opened an account and it did as stated and imported my Messenger contacts.
I've yet to link-up with anyone and hopefully that will go as well as the merge.

We are running Windows 7 Enterprise and Office 2010.  I am deploying WIM images.  Is there a way to set the answer file so that Office will activate automatically?
While we're at it, is there a way to set Windows Update so it will update both Windows and Office automatically?  This gets reset when I run sysprep.

I have seen similar threads to this one but not quite the same situation I have Vista Ultimate x MS Office Home amp Student The E-Mail client is 'Windows Live Mail' This is set as the default mailer in all relevant places and otherwise works fine MS Outlook is not installed nor has it applications Live Mail' from 'Windows Office sending 2007 Issues even been on this PC If I try to 'send to mail receipient as attachment' from one of the Office applications I obtain an error 'You must logon to Microsoft Exchange to access your address book' Trying again leads to the same error If I then gogo 'send to mail recipient as PDF' or 'send to mail recipient for review' it opens a Issues sending 'Windows Live Mail' from Office 2007 applications 'Windows Live Mail' send mail window and all works fine If I then go back to 'send to mail recipient as attachment' it now works fine Close the Office application try again but with the same result Some of the other threads imply that it is not possible Issues sending 'Windows Live Mail' from Office 2007 applications to use 'Windows Live Mail' to send from Office but the above experience shows that it can work but with unusual errors and sequence of events Any others had similar experience Anyone have 'Windows Live Mail' working from 'send to mail recipient' in Office applications with no issues

A:Issues sending 'Windows Live Mail' from Office 2007 applications

I fixed this after some searching. Turns out that setting Windows Live Mail as the default E-Mail client in 'Set your default programs' is insufficient. Solution is to goto Start-Default Programs-Set program access and computer defaults-Custom, then explicitly select Windows Live Mail as the default mail program in this location. All then works fine.

I was trying out EMET for my line of business application There are many executables including some that are pure NET applications I created the rules using wildcards basically match based on executable name only and enabled them EMET is not loading into some of these applications some applications into EMET is not itself configured loading First I tired it on a Windows SP x machine Then on a Windows x machine On each machine it is a different set of applications that EMET is not loading itself into some configured applications EMET fails to load in I used the quot Export Selected quot in Application Configuration section to export the configuration to import EMET is not loading itself into some configured applications it into a different machine Then I tried adding it from the window by selecting the running process I restarted the process and still EMET was not loaded into it I also tried loading the configuration using the recommended configuration template Still no luck Is there any logging that tells us why EMET failed to load into an executable Am I missing something Also what is the performance penalty of EMET Does EMET do anything meaningful for NET applications

I've installed EMET 5.51 on a Windows 10 Pro system to understand its potential use cases.  As a test, I've added notepad.exe (in every combination from wildcard to exact pathname, etc.) to the protected list.  I've ensured that all current notepad
sessions are closed and then opened a new one.  No green checkmark appears next to the running notepad and process explorer does not show EMET loaded into the notepad process.  There are no error messages in the event log.  I've done the same
with calc with the exact same result. I then did the same thing for Chrome and interestingly enough all Chrome processes show up as protected in the EMET console.
Am I overlooking something?

..and which do not.

I had a question: How do i get to the little menu where I can choose which applications automatically start up when Windows starts up and which do not? I forgot how to get to that menu but I remember that I could check and uncheck which things would start up, etc. The reason for this is because everytime I start windows, it tries to load my scanning software which I don't need started anymore due to the scanner not being connected at all anymore, and the uninstallation not going as properly as it should of.. but it just bugs me that it tries to connect to the scanner (with about 3-4 attempts) when Windows starts so this is my best option...

Any idea?

Everytime I try to install iTunes I experience the following problems. I run the iTunes download for Vista x64 from the iTunes website. Then after it is downloaded and I go to run it I get the following Windows Installer message: "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package". I have called Apple to no avail, I have contacted Dell since this is a new Dell Insipron 530s computer, they want $239. to fix. I have changed the windows installer to automacic vice manual - no luck. I just need help in installing iTunes and while I am at it, Microsoft office 2007 student teacher edition. This is really getting frustrating. Thank you.

A:[SOLVED] Installation of Windows XP & Office Updates Keep Failing

Give this a try:
There are a number of things that can break Windows Update in Windows XP, including performing a repair/reinstall. For a fix, try these next steps:

Open Notepad or WordPad and copy/paste the following text:

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 msxml2.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
end

Save the file to your desktop as UpdatesFix.cmd (you'll have to click the "Save As Type…. Dropdown arrow on the right of the selection window and select "All Files" before you click the Save button).

If you'd rather not try the batch file, you can enter each line in the Run box one at a time and click OK after each one.

Double-click the UpdatesFix.cmd file; a command window will open, and you'll see a series of dialogue boxes saying DLLRegisterServer in *.dll succeeded. Click OK to step through the process.
Once all the dll's have been successfully reregistered visit the Windows Update site and try the Windows updates again to see if it works correctly.
Often you will have to download and install Windows Installer 3.1 and the Windows Genuine Advantage tool before you can download any more updates.
Windows Installer 3.1
Redistributable (v2) For Windows 2000 Service Pack 3; Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows Server 2003; Windows XP; Windows XP Service Pack 1; Windows XP Service Pack 2
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

An update for Windows Installer 3.1 is available for Windows Server 2003 SP1 and for the 64-bit editions of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898715/en-us

On rare occasions, a reregister will fail; in such cases, run sfc /scannow (have your OS CD handy) and then try again.

Other times, the reregistering will succeed, but Windows Update still fails. This can occur if the temporary folders of Windows Update have been corrupted. You can refer to these steps to rename these folders. Be assured the folders will be created again when you visit the Windows Update site again.

1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Run the following command in the opened window:

net stop wuauserv

2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir%\SoftwareDistribution and press Enter to open the temporary folder of the Windows Update engine. Then, rename the following two subfolders:

DataStore
Download

For example, rename DataStore to DataStore-old, and Download to Download-old.

3. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Run the following command in the opened window:

net start wuauserv

After you rename the above folders, please restart the computer in normal mode and visit the Windows Update site again.

If you are still having problems, post the specifics on this forum, and we will see if we can help.

I Installed Office and this changed my Windows Update Settings Permanently I know it was due to some option I choose in the Windows Settings 2010 my Office changed installation Update has Office Installation cannot remember the name as I was able to avoid this issue with another Installation of Office I want to reset my Windows Update to my previous setting prior to Office installation I have always chosen the Windows Update Option quot Let me know of updates but chose when to download and install quot After installation of Office this is now set to quot Never Check for updates quot and the box is greyed out with no option to change and also now says quot Some settings are managed by your system administrator quot This was never the case prior to the Office install Now I have to manually check for updates I have ran all the MS Fix It tools etc and nothing has resolved issue I have now removed MS Office and the problem still remains

A:Office 2010 installation has changed my Windows Update Settings

That looks like the screen you get from an Standard User account, rather than an Admin account.

I can tell you categorically that Office didn't make the changes you're seeing there. It may however be malware.

Please download and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version) from http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ - UNtick 'Enable free trial of MBAM Premium' at the end of the installation - and update it, then run a full scan in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts.

Quarantine everything it finds

Well, it seems that you have several situations that need address.

a. I suggest you run chkdsk.

b. I further suggest you uninstall/reinstall Office 2003 (seems to be a problem only with that version).

c. If not a legitimate copy of XP (question arises in my mind), consider leaving it uninstalled and using Open Office.

d. A repair install of XP (up to current standards) appears to be in order.

e. Check Event Viewer for errors, particularly re the hard drive.

Prior to installation I am trying to determine if EMET defaults to an "on" state after installation.  If so I am trying to determine what it will protect by default as I have many applications that not "standard" from Microsoft.

Hello.

I've been wondering: what is meant exactly by "Install EMET for yourself, or for anyone who uses this computer:".

I mean I understand of course the general meaning, but I'm not sure what are the effects if one selects "Just me".
Would that imply that:
1) only that user can start and configure EMET but everything he configured (DEP/SEHOP/ASLR) would apply to all users
or
2) features enabled through EMET would only apply to that user (no DEP/SEHOP/ASLR for other users?)

Thanks

A:EMET installation option

DEP/SEHOP/ASLR are always applied system-wide.
The other protection options, however, can be installed for you or all the users on the PC.

A:Installation Problem of MS Office 2007 SP1 Update on Windows Vista Home Premium

I would say that the simple solution is probably to do a repair install of Office 2007. There is, however a KB that addresses this problem for Office 2003, which may apply to 2007: How to troubleshoot common Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server Update Services installation issues

Hopefully that helps.

Hello there, can anyone help me, I;m operating windows XP using broadband connection but applications will not close most of the time. They just hang there even when i do CTRL ALT Del it just brings up a box with "cancel now" but when i click it, it makes no difference. The app will eventually close 5 -10 minutes later but it is so annoying. I run anti virus and spywear all the time and delete anything that shows up

any help would be great

Hi I am new here, have been reading this site for some time. I need help with EMET. I installed EMET v4 on my windows 7 computer with no problems. I upgraded .net version 4 to have Client Profile and extended as that is what I read it needed. I do not find what windows 8 needs for .net. I have on my windows 8 computer under windows explorer .net 4.0.30319. Is this all I need on windows 8 to install EMET v4? Second question is I saw on a Microsoft page I needed to install KB2790907, which I do not find under windows update. Do I need to download and install this and if so has anybody had any problems with this update? Third and last question is I know windows 8.1 will be out soon, should I wait to install EMET after 8.1 to prevent any problems?

A:Windows 8 EMET requirements

Hello Lynn, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you do not have a previous version of EMET installed, then you should be able to install EMET 4.0 without needing to do install anything else. The tutorial below can give you more details to help.

Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET) - Windows 7 Help Forums

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I have been having a problem with applications closing when I exit them. It applies to all Office 2007 programs, as well as Firefox, IE and an assortment of others. After I have closed some applications and try to open them again at a later time I am unable to. I bring up Windows Task Manager and find that the program is still listed under processes. I have to End Process each instance before I can start the program again. Now Firefox will restart but it also appears in the WTM numerous instances. Is there a fix for this?

A:HELP! applications/folders/PC keeps closing..

Hi,

Avoid using the computer too much while we are in the process of fixing it. The infection you have tends to create copies of itself by masquerading as legit subfolders inside folders.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running combofix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

all my drivers are up to date.

and I can't play any games for more than 10 minutes without them crashing unexpectedly. Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this?

Hi, welcome to tsf!

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running combofix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
C:\Qoobox\Add-Remove programs.txt
New HijackThis log.

Hi,

I have some applications I don't know what they are which I have closed with a firewall, I am not sure if I'm doing the right thing though, the applications are:

LSA Shell (export version)
Generic Host process for Win32 services

what are those??

and what is this? svchost.exe

thank you

A:closing applications with firewall

They are common Windows processes. They have been known to be infected before so run a virus scann on them and if they turn up clean let them run.

Have you tried an Office repair. This is how to do it with Windows 7, Open Control Panel, select Programs & Features, scroll down to Microsoft Office 2013 & Right Click on it & select Change & this will show a couple of Repair options to try. Windows 8 might be different as I haven't tried it.

I have lost access to the file because of the change in file formats, it was in windows old but how do I recover it and then change the file formats? It strikes me this may be a problem in a business or a charity who just didn't have
the money or just didn't see the need to upgrade to windows 10.

Hello,
I made security test to check build-in or free Microsoft security software for Windows 7.

"White side"
- Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit with all updates
- MS Security Essentials 4 with newest databases
- EMET 4.0 (high security + recommended during install)
- UAC on max. level

versus 20x 0-day ransoms (very popular Ukash/Urausy).
Malwares have been provided by tachion.

Unfortunattely, Microsoft security fail the test
Conclusion: I recommend to use better AV, that has more shields (reputation system, heuristics etc.).

A:Windows 7 64-bit + EMET + MSE4 + UAC vs ransoms

Majority of malware builds are tested against popular AVs automatically and re-packed once they are detected by many. MSE would be first in line of checks. It is not that AVs don't work (they do), but the key is patching exploitable holes (aka JAVA, Adobe, etc), good behavior scans and recovery plan

Running Vista Home Ed bit on brand new computer Some programs close when I try to open them and I get a message from the system tray saying DEP has closed the program After some extensive research I've tried different methods for excluding the programs from DEP monitoring as well as disabling DEP altogether and all have failed I get a message saying that Adobe cannot be on the exclusion list for DEP and with the command prompt method it says the operation is completed successfully but I still get the same message and can't open Multiple closing DEP applications... Issues Adobe I am fed up with Vista entirely and I want to install XP alongside it I've created a new partition already and I have an xp setup disk but it does not run when I pop it in and restart I can't find any way to run the xp setup My main concern is with DEP but if anyone can help me install xp and setup a multi-OS setup I would be just as grateful I've also read about complications with drivers needed to be installed I need to know what and where to download those and also I've read about DEP closing applications... Multiple Issues issues with booting back into vista if I can manage to get xp installed Related thread http www techsupportforum com f multi-os- html

A:DEP closing applications... Multiple Issues

I won't mark the thread as solved because I still have the DEP issue with Vista and although I found a way around it, it is still an issue that should be solved for those who don't want to use the solution I've found.

I was able to get XP booted up along side Vista in a dual boot configuration. To do this, obtain a windows XP startup disk, (or make one) create a seperate partition and format it to the size of your choice, at least 10 GB, but I would recommend more. With that done, insert the XP disk and restart, press any key to boot from disk, and install xp on the partition you created. Be sure to choose the right drive path. After the install, you will boot into xp and need to reinstall the vista bootloader with Easy BCD. Download and install Easy BCD for free here:

http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1

Next, follow the remainder of the instructions in Easy BCD I found here:

http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_v...ide.htm?page=4

You should now be able to boot into the OS of your choice and set a default OS to boot into automatically after a time interval of your choice. Hope this helps someone.

I can open Internet explorer for half a minute and then is disappears, World of Warcraft stays open but keeps popping down into my bottom bar.

Even on Yahoo browser (they only thing I can use to do this) the top bar keeps fading in and out as though something is trying to close it.

I have scanned with both McAfee and Superantispyware.

Any help gratefully received. Goodrune0

When I download and install something, as I recently did in upgrading Windows Media Player, what it is the best way to deal with the recommendation I get to close all other applications or programs? Should I just close the programs that show up in the System Tray? Or should I go to Ctrl-Alt-Del and close everything there except Explorer and System Tray (I presume these are the two that I need to leave running)? Normally, the only programs that I will have on my System Tray are PrintKey (to print the screen) and Internet Call Manager (for call waiting), and MSN Instant Messenger. Thanks.

Hey there, this is my first post on these forums, so I do apologize if I make a mistake with formatting/etc. I am not super savvy with the BSOD/software end of the world, but I have narrowed down a few of my problems. My newest and most frustrating issue is a recurring BSOD that happens when I open/close certain programs. Often times when I am opening/closing Steam games, I get this BSOD. I know through searching, ntoskrnl.exe is often not to blame, but running bluescrenview yields that as the number one culprit.
Can someone please help identify the issue? I have attached my dump files, let me know if further information is needed.

Thank you in advance,
Jutty

I've had this error come up when closing apps World of Warcraft most frequently as well as once a minute after BSOD applications DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE closing or two into watching a full screen video from the Blizzard app launcher The failure never seems to happen when I'm 'doing' things only after starting or closing applications I'm not sure if that's coincidental or not but I thought perhaps it might be something to do with the system attempting to switch between the Nvidia graphics card GTX M and the Intel HD one I took a look at the dump files BSOD DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE after closing applications the diagnostic tool generates for me and BSOD DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE after closing applications it's pointing to x F VRF ACPI IMAGE pci sys as the faulting driver I used device manager to attempt to find updates for the PCI Express Root Complex driver using the windows search and it's as up to date as Windows is aware of This laptop also included a quot Smart Update quot tool which searches for updated system drivers as well as Nvidia controls for driver updates and changing settings based on game profiles I updated the Nvidia driver using their tool but have had additional BSODs same code since then The quot Smart Update quot tool doesn't find any new drivers for anything though it does say that my Nvidia graphics card is a higher release than the quot official BSOD DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE after closing applications quot version I'm not keen on downgrading though since the dump looks to point to the pci sys driver rather than a video card driver Windows is current on all updates though I did find two optional ones which I will install after posting this one is for intel graphics the other looks unrelated Edit Had another BSOD after installing Windows updates so no help there Will generate a new dump if needed Any suggestions for next steps Thanks

A:BSOD DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE after closing applications

.....it's as up to date as Windows is aware of.

Unfortunately, Windows isn't very aware at all when it comes to driver updates. It only checks it's own database - so if the manufacturer or the OEM hasn't uploaded the driver - then Windows won't know that there is an update available. This has gotten better as the Windows line matures - but still is a far cry from being a very useful tool. I only use it for drivers when setting up new PC's - and then I visit the PC manufacturer's site to see if they have any more recent updates.

Always upload the memory dumps after a crash. Every additional data point helps us out (and I use an automated tool to generate the results of the analysis). It's easiest just to zip up the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump and upload it with your next post (you may have to copy it to your Desktop in order to zip it up). I'll sort out which one's haven't been run yet and will run an analysis on it/theml.

************************************
Please turn Driver Verifier off. To do this, open up verifier.exe and select "Delete existing settings", then click on "Finish". Restart the system in order for the changes to take effect.

I got 3 things from the memory dumps:
- there is involvement with the video, so we have to update video drivers and test the video hardware
- there are traces of networking components in the raw stack text of each memory dump - so the problem may be related to networking drivers
- the VIA Audio drivers date from 2009 - so they may be causing issues. They must be updated or replaced.

Start with these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics As we suspect video problems, start with the video tests.

Then replace (uninstall then reinstall a fresh copy) your video drivers. Get the latest, Win8.1 compatible version available from the Gigabyte website for your laptop (the Intel graphics drivers, the nVidia graphics drivers, and the switching software drivers).

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

VMfilt64.sys - this driver hasn't been added to the DRT as of this run. Please search Google/Bing for the driver if additional information is needed.

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.

The drivers that are struckout don't have updates available (AFAIK).
DO NOT delete them, just leave them be.

When Enhanced Protected Mode of IE10 is enabled, column of Running EMET become blank.

It is which about whether this is a problem only of a display, or whether actually not effective?

Such a phenomenon did not occur in version 2.1.

I cannot get EMET 5.2 certificate pinning to work in Windows 10.
When I test it by pinning an invalid Root CA certificate to the website, EMET does not block website access in Windows 10 like it does in Windows 8.1
Has EMET certificate pinning been disabled in Windows 10 ? If so, has this functionality been superceded by a better technique ?

I have searched high and low, and this is the only anecdotal reference to this I can find:
"Windows 10 does not use certificate pinning, means someone can easily apply a man-in-the-middle-attack for each Microsoft cloud-access for example"

The company this week announced the officially Windows 10-compatible version 5.5 of EMET. However, it launches as a tool that Microsoft believes is now largely redundant, thanks to inbuilt security improvements it has made to Windows 10.

Microsoft is so confident of how it has hardened its Windows 10 Edge browser that it's dropped support for it in EMET 5.5.

"Given the advanced technologies used to protect Microsoft Edge, including industry-leading sandboxing, compiler, and memory-management techniques, EMET 5.5 mitigations do not apply to Edge," Microsoft's EMET team said.

Microsoft is just as confident that Windows 10 devices won't need EMET.

Getting it for quite some time now, mostly for games. I started just going to the task manager and close the exe instead of exiting the games properly from the fear that ill get that BSoD.

I've also ran memtest (since google suggested it might be a RAM issue) and I let it run for over 5 hours with 5 passes and 0 errors, which is enough to be confident that it isn't the issue.
Will appreciate any help, Thanks.

A:BSoD after closing full screen applications

The issue is still ongoing, would be great to have some BSOD guru replying. ^^

I m writing this from my laptop as my desktop is increasingly unstable and has been f r a while I ve taken advice from tech-wise guys online forums and spent money with computer repair shops trying to sort it Windows crashes, Random applications freezes, closing Vista Home Premium has been reinstalled more than once hardware disconnected drivers updated memory has been tested and swapped - and whatever else I could think of or has been suggested The words quot Windows has detected a problem quot or quot The quot application quot has closed and is restarting quot are so familiar that I no longer scream I have a Packard Bell imedia with Random crashes, freezes, applications closing Intel quad core Gb Samsung memory in two strips although system only seems to Random crashes, freezes, applications closing recognise runnig Vista Home Premium -bit Random crashes, freezes, applications closing Gb HD and a PSU When I get a BSOD the codes files quoted are invariably different and often there are no files quoted or other indications apart from quot Windows detected a problem quot These things seem totally random - today for instance - the first time ever - I was told that quot plug and play quot had stopped But I often don t always get a BSOD - I just get messages such as quot Desktop Windows closed quot or quot The application stopped quot or quot Internet Explorer closed quot and very occasionally no message at all just a restart I did suspect my Kaspersky protection but problems occur with or without it though seemingly less often when it is stopped - and I have the same security on this laptop Windows without the slightest problem Professional advice has been to reinstall Windows - done twice with only short temporary gain Can t see the point of paying yet again for the same advice nbsp

If possible please tell us what the computer shops did to repair your system in bullit points.

Secondly please give us your full hardware profile in bullet points as well. It makes it much easier this way. Yes, we know you have a 250 psu but we'd like the brand name. Also video card, etc. How old is this system?

Lastly...

How to find and post your Minidump Files:

My Computer > C Drive > Windows Folder > Minidump Folder > Minidump Files.

It is these files that we need (not the folder). Attach to your next post the five most recent dumps. Notice the Manage Attachments button at the bottom when you go to post the next time. You can Zip up to five files per Zip; if you only have one or two you don?t need to zip them, just attach as is. Please do us a favor and don?t Zip each one individually.

P.S. 32-bit Operating Systems cannot recognize or utilize 4 gigs of RAM. 3.5 is the max.

Hi everyone. I am not an expert so i left EMET almost with recommended settings.
I managed to add programs like Firefox, chrome etc but I can't add metro apps ( those from windows store .. I hope you get it what I am saying because in Italian when we say apps we don't refer to applications like in English ).
I can't because i can't find ".exe" of metro apps.
Googling I found that Universal Windows Apps actually don't have ".exe"'files. So? How can I add them in EMET?
I'd really appreciate if you could provide help
Looking forward to hearing from you

A:How to make Windows store apps run under EMET 5.5 control on w10

Many programs are listed in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Menu Start\Programs
I don't know if this is the Answer you are looking for.

The folder "ProgramData" is by default hidden, to be able to see that folder, you need to unhide that Folder.

Probably the biggest change in EMET is official support for Microsoft s new operating system Windows While EMET ran fine on Windows it never supported the operating system officially and this changes with the new release When you run the Beta version of EMET after installation you will notice another change right away provided that you run Windows and not an earlier version of Windows The main interface lists the new quot Block Untrusted Fonts quot option which is set to audit by default This is a Windows- specific feature that is not supported with support 10 Microsoft EMET launches Windows 5.5 Beta on previous versions of Windows Windows ships with settings to block untrusted fonts The feature is not enabled by default and can be set to on or audit if desired On prevents any font from being loaded that is not in the Fonts directory of the Windows installation while audit writes untrusted font events to the log but won t block access to them There is also an option to exclude apps so that they can load untrusted fonts regardless of the global preference Other EMET improvements The new EMET version ships with a handful of additional improvements Better configuration of various mitigations via GPO EAF EAF pseudo-mitigation performance improvements Bug fixes Microsoft notes that EMET mitigations do not apply to the company s own Edge browser on Windows due to quot the advanced technologies used to protect Microsoft Edge including industry leading sandboxing compiler and memory management techniques quot Now Read Microsoft Enhanced Mitigation Experience Microsoft launches EMET 5.5 Beta with Windows 10 support Toolkit Tips Microsoft launches EMET Beta with Windows support - gHacks Tech News nbsp

Hi there,
Our workstation users do not have admin rights. We must enter admin creds to open EMET GUI. EMET 5.5 GUI crashes on systems running kernelbase.dll v 6.1.7601.19160, which seems to have been introduced by the abovesaid bulletin that addresses a vulnerability
with elevation of privilege.

Event id 1000
Faulting application name: EMET_GUI.exe, version 5.5.5871.31892

Faulting application path: c:\program files (x86)\emet 5.5\emet_gui.exe
Faulting module path: c:\windows\system32\kernelbase.dll

On systems running older kernelbase.dll v 6.1.7601.18939, EMET GUI opens fine.
Apart from not applying this security update, is there a workaround? Wait for EMET 5.6?
Other aspects of EMET seem to be functioning fine.
