Upgrading my RAM, better to add, or replace?

Q: Upgrading my RAM, better to add, or replace?

I currently have 2 x 4GB sticks to equal 8GB but I want to upgrade to 16GB total. Initially I was going to buy the same 2 x 4GB sticks again since I have 2 RAM slots spare, but then I read about dual channel/quad channel etc and basically want to know if it would be better to add 2 more 4 GB sticks, or buy 2 x new 8GB sticks. Thinking performance wise, the price isn't too different.
I have MSI Z77A-GD55 mobo, and my RAM is Kingston 8GB 1600MHz DDR3

Thanks in advance for advice

Preferred Solution: Upgrading my RAM, better to add, or replace?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

For DDR3 there is no quad channel, either way would work fine, go for the cheaper.

Hi all The laptop in question is a Toshiba Satellite A -S A few weeks ago it got dropped right on its adapter? Replace the replace the or jack power corner Replace the power jack or replace the adapter? with the power plug still in it the little metal plug of the AC adapter is now slightly crooked and the power jack has a little chip off the plastic part of it Anyway after this mishap it worked fine for another weeks and then suddenly this week it s refusing to power up Its battery has been shot for a while can t hold a charge and I ve been using it with the battery out Why the sudden refusal to boot I took the whole thing apart---minus the little chip the power jack looks totally fine and cosmetically sound Put the whole thing back together taking care to check that plugs were snug---still no power Stuck in the crappy battery booted just fine and then shut itself down after like minutes How likely is it that it s the power jack which is broken And why did it take this long to crap out if it IS broken A new one of those silly jacks costs over on eBay so I want to make sure that it s the jack before I just up and buy one Of course if it s the AC adapter that s broken that would cost even more Bah Input nbsp

A:Replace the power jack or replace the adapter?

AND/OR inside the case the the jack is soldered directly to the motherboard. Is also possible that
1) It's already cracked
2) If not yet, it's gonna crack

So look to see what connection looks like between power jack and motherboard, If you feel u wanna/can re-solder yourself or the typically price to redo the whole power thing seems to run $125 parts/labor/warranty if you take it somewhere. So how much is it all worth to you?

Hello I need Replace in Find Column) different (but Replace & a to Find & Replace (but Replace in a different Column) know if there is a function perhaps a Macro or Query or a more complex Find amp Replace that can accomplish the following cause my database is huge amp I m hoping not to do this manually I keep an Access database for my homeowners association on the condition amp conformity of different exterior attributes for about townhomes The Board of Directors wants to move away from using the term quot Grandfathered quot which is distinguished by the acronym quot GF quot in the database column that shows conformity labeled IAW We use this database to generate annual architectural reports for our residents Our board wants the entry quot GF quot replaced with a quot Y quot they want the GF entry removed from the report completely amp they re serious about it Now I have already created a Query that has located all the GF entries in their various columns of various records which our Board wants me to use in an internal quot in-office quot database in order to keep track of what attributes actually were grandfathered originally as a reference for our field inspector when he inspects the townhomes But we also want to create an unassuming symbol on the report perhaps an or a something that will alert the inspector to an attribute that once was grandfathered on his field report This is to be done so that he will not be flying blind when he comes across a non-conforming attribute i e he will see the symbol amp know that that symbol means there used to be a quot GF quot in it s place BUT we want to move that symbol to a different column a column labeled quot Comments quot I could run the Find amp Replace function find all the GF s amp replace them with a Y but that symbol would go right back in the very same column that the GF came out of So is there a way to find all the GF s in one column amp replace them w a Y in that same column but have a symbol quot quot appear in another column of the same record I know it sounds complicated but can it be done Thanks mark man Access nbsp

For some reason W7 has decided to change 'Copy and Replace' with 'Move and Replace' when picking a file up with the left mouse and dragging it to another folder where an old version of the file exists.

My Excel SS is in two places: My desktop and USB which I use for backup. I would simply open the folder on the USB pick up the file on the desktop with the left mouse and drag it to the USB folder. Then I would get the message 'Copy and Replace'.. But not anymore it's become 'Move and Replace'.

I know I can 'Copy and Replace' by holding down the Ctrl key but I dont want to.

It looks like there should be a simple answer

Can anyone help? I swear I didnt change anything.

A:How can I 'Copy and Replace' not 'Move and Replace'.

Hi,
Have you ever tried right click drag and drop ?
There will be a list option after you drop,
Cheers.

Hi and welcome to Techspot!!

Test the RAM sticks individually. One of them might be bad. You can use Memtest86 to try them out.

Also, try them in different memory slots. That sometimes helps.

I've managed to upgrade some of my home PC's from Win or Win to Wn without any significant problems but I am having major difficulty upgrading one of my PC's It is running Win Home -bit and when I originally ran the Windows upgrade advisor it indicated that I could not upgrade as my NVidia GEForce graphics card was incompatible with Windows I tried various workarounds using suggestions on this and other sites to upgrade with the GEForce card but none were successful So I purchased and to 10 upgrading card graphics Win after Upgrading - incompatible installed a new graphics card - an AMD Radeon R which should be Win compatible Upgrading to Win 10 - after upgrading incompatible graphics card I then re-ran the Win upgrade advisor - it still said that I couldn't upgrade as the quot GeForce card quot was incompatible - even though it was no longer installed I checked the Upgrading to Win 10 - after upgrading incompatible graphics card Device Manager and the graphics card was clearly showing as being the AMD card I then explicitly uninstalled any NVidia drivers software using the Control Panel Program uninstall - still unable to upgrade to Win I also ran the Wagnard tools quot Display driver uninstaller quot and removed any NVidia software drivers - still unable to upgrade I am using the latest drivers from the AMD website I also tried to upgrade using the Media Creation tool and a Win image from DVD previously this also failed to work and gave the incompatible graphics card error this seemed to work up to a point but after a reboot it wanted me to select a keyboard layout but neither my usb keyboard nor mouse would function and the installation froze On rebooting the OS reverted to Win and the keyboard mouse worked ok I want to upgarde to Win rather than do a fresh install but am now unsure what to do - I keep getting the quot Incompatible GEForce graphics card quot message anytime I run the Win advisor tool even after downloading it again from the MS website Any suggestions as to how I can resolve this issue and finally upgrade

Hi,

I bought Windows 7 having come from Vista. However, there is a BIOS update for my system. The new BIOS update states: The BIOS updates the fan control algorithm of the system, and turns the fan on at low volume while your notebook PC is operational. If you are currently experiencing any symptoms on your notebook PC, please contact HP for support. It is located here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...340180&lang=en

I'd love to flash it but not sure if it will ruin my computer as it's more than likely not designed for flash when Windows 7 is on it or do you's know any better?

I also have 2 blue vertical lines going do the right hand side of the screen. I've seen loads of problems but no solutions. Has any fixed this HP problem?

Cheers folks!

A:Upgrading BIOS after Upgrading from Vista to 7

The BIOS is the stuff that happens BEFORE Windows starts to load.
Do you have issues with overheating or with the fan? If so, the BIOS update is for you.
Also, BIOS flashes are dangerous - and you can turn your computer into a paperweight by doing it incorrectly. In short, if it ain't broke - don't fix it!

The type of lines that you describe on your screen are usually caused by hardware issues. Send it in for repair if the system is under warranty. If not, then get an estimate from a local computer store - it may be cheaper to live with it.

So i wasn't sure what this topic fell under but i was hoping i could get some help on this. So i want to start running some higher up games and i'm not sure what is bottle necking me atm. I don't wanna replace both but i do have a $200 budget or so for an upgrade. I heard from someone that my cpu isn't the best but it can still hold up. While my gpu is really outdated and not good. With my current combo i'm able to play most games on highest quality, but for newer games like the witcher 3 and so on, i can barely run it. I was gonna get the geforce gtx 960, thinking that may help my performance. Here are my specs

My specs:

AMD A8-5600K APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics (4 CPUs), ~3.6GHz
8192MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 4B DDR3 memory

A:should i replace my HD?

I don`t think you should replace you hard drive just yet.

The fact that you`re getting lots of different stop messages, could be a symptom of faulty ram.

Download the memtest86+ programme from www.memtest.org.

If you don`t have a floppy drive, there is an iso version that you can burn to cd, and then boot from that.

Let the programme run for at least seven passes.

A:What should I replace?

For what it will cost you to upgrade it to play games, I would just suggest saving for a new computer.

First, you'll need to install a video card. If the model you have is in a micro-tower, it's not likely you'll be able to find a video card to fit.

Second, you would want to upgrade the processor. Even though it's apparently dual-core, it's still extremely slow.

Third, you would want to upgrade to 4GB of RAM.

And then to support it all, you'd likely need a new power supply.

So like I said...your best option would be to clean that up, sell it, and buy a new computer when you get the money.

A:Do i need to replace the fan????

Which fan?

If its the power supply fan, its essential. If you cook the power supply, the HP only replacements are very expensive, and standard ones usually do not fit.

I would remove the fan then see if you can match the size with this or similar from Ebay :- http://www.ebay.com/itm/65mm-DC-12V...491634?hash=item3aafbcd672:g:-rYAAOxyzfNRyFhK

You will have to match the electrical connector as well so check how many pins are in the board socket.
You may have to use some force to disconnect the present fan's power cable from the GPU board.
It is a plug/socket connection isn't it ?

At random, XP will restart on its own. The computer was built less than 2 years ago and I'm not quite sure if it's a software or hardware issue. AMD 2600+, 1.9 ghz, 512mb RAM, windows XP, radeon 9600 graphics card.

I find the computer crashes when it's put under a heavy workload. For instance, I opened Spy Bot S&D to rule out any infections and within 30 seconds of running the application the computer restarted. This occured back to back just moments ago. Other times I am using WORD or browsing. This has been occuring for more than 4 months now.

I've ran a CPU application to max it out and again the computer restarts. It occurs everytime I run the program.

I also monitored my RAM while it performed and only 50% was being utilized.

How do I know it's the CPU and not the Motherboard or HD?

Thanks!

A:Do I need to replace my CPU?

Spobot Killed the Computer in the Den with the Fireplace Poker

This isn't "Clue" we're paying, you say?

Spybot uses 100% of the CPU. Your box could be entering thermal cutoff.
Use canned air to clean out the CPU/ heatsink, and just for good measure the rest of the insides as well.
Find out if your board has hardware monitoring and find what the critical zone temperatures are. You may have to install either the board manufacturers monitoring software or a utility like "Speedfan', available here at Techspot.

When I installed Win 8 Pro on an old laptop with Win 7 32-bit (dual boot configuration), I do not remember seeing an option for installing either the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 8. My System shows I have 64-bit and I am having trouble locating video drivers for my 6 year old Toshiba Satellite laptop. I found people with a similar problem on an NVidia forum and they put together a 32-bit driver version that supposedly works. I did not mean to install the 64-bit version. Is there a way to do a reinstall, but this time select Win 8 32-bit? Is there an option for it If I just do a clean reinstall?

A:How to replace Win 8 Pro 64-bit with Win 8 Pro 32-bit?

Hello Stan, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The installation of either a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 8 is dependent on if the installation media is 32-bit or 64-bit.

If you like, you can use the tutorial below to download a 32-bit Windows 8 ISO file from within any 32-bit Windows computer that you can use to create a bootable installation DVD or USB with.

Hope this helps,

Hi all,

I've got a little bit of a dilemma here, I've got a 3.5year old Dell 8300 with the following specs:

3GHz P4
1GB Ram
X700 Pro
225W PSU (or thats what i suspect)
Ive got a standard PCI slot.

The issue is whether to replace whole thing and get Kentfield extreme with 8800GTX obviously spend will be around 1800 for base unit or to replace graphics card (and probably PSU) and wait for Yorkfield chips later in the year, which are expected to be cheaper to produce with more speed and lower power consumption. It's just id like to play some games even with minimal detail during the year (well except Crysis which would give my system processor failure just at the sight of the box).

What would people recommend and on graphics card front what replacement would offer best value for money given my system.

Hi, I am planning to purchase HP Envy 15-AE116TX and upgrade the hard drive from HDD to SSD. I will buy the SSD separately.  However, so as not to void the warranty, I should take it to HP service center and let them do the job. My question is, how much should I pay for the service? I have been calling HP service center hotline (02) 867-3551 and even the direct line to Makati service center (02) 888-6100 but nobody dared to pick up the phone. Is this the kind of after sales service that HP offers? Anyways, I am willing to go to service center but I would like to know exactly how much they will charge me.  And I have to make sure that it won't void the warranty of the laptop. Hoping for your immediate response.

A:need help to see what i need to fix or replace

Sounds as though it thinks it's needs starting from a network and that would make me wonder if it's been taken over remotely so when you do get it started, it might have a major malware infection. Tap the Delete, Function 2 or whichever other key you need to go into BIOS or Setup and seek out Boot Options or similar and make sure the order is set to boot from hard disk first.

Should i replace my 3 month old power supply? I have no issues with it, but am a little worried because it was a "cheap" one.

Its a HEC/ winpower 850 watt.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RETAIL-BOXED-...s_EH?hash=item20ac760353&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Ive read a few reviews about HEC power supplys in general and they seem to get pretty good reviews. My pc needs around 575 watts to run according to my gpu manual. Does anyone have any experience with this brand??

Thanks in advance!

Hello, On my motherboard this morning when removing a faulty graphics card, the little white clamp at the end of the pci express slot broke. Is there anyway to replace or fix this? I was thinking of gluing it somehow but the last thing I need is for the glue to melt and cause more problems than it solved. If it involves sending it off to a technician does anyone know the avg cost to replace the white clamp or complete pci express slot? If you need more info on what type of pci-express slot it is it was holding a nvidia7900 gtx OC. I'm hoping I didn't just ruin the whole motherboard.

A:Anyway to fix/replace?

I don't think that can be fixed. I've never really seen this happen so I don't know for sure but I think u will need a new mobo.

Sometime i turn off and on then the fan will work also.

Do you think i need to replace my PSU or could it be something else?

A:Should I replace my PSU?

What is the make and model? This is not sounding good what you describe. A good working PSU is the backbone of any system.

Give us the rest of your system hardware including make and model of your motherboard, amount of RAM installed, harddrive and video card. This will help us help you if you feel you need it.

Hi SSD with Replace HDD there My old computer is very slow and the HDD makes a lot of noise all the time particularly the C drive so I thought I Replace HDD with SSD d replace it with an SSD The computer has physical disks of approximately GB each and partitions all primary C is where the OS and most program files are stored D has all the multimedia files and docs and E GB is unused So my plan was to remove D temporarily connect the SSD clone the C drive to the SSD Then finally I was Replace HDD with SSD going to swap the old C drive HDD with the new C drive SSD add back the D drive and voila Even though the D drive is pretty slow it doesn t bother me Replace HDD with SSD as long as it s just a storage drive But the problem arose at step i e swap the nd hard disk with the SSD Regardless of which of the hard disks I disconnect the system won t boot What I get is a failed status in relation to RAID ID This is confusing I assume only one of the HDD s is actually bootable i e drive C isn t that correct If that s the case then why can t I simply swap drive D Regards Al nbsp

Hello prissyellowsmom, Welcome to TSF!

Without a Retail version of a Windows? XP Home? SP2 CD, there is absolutely nothing you can do.
The only solution would be to go to a reputable Computer Store and purchase one.

Sorry there's no magical cure.

After a series of unstable voltage problem, I couldn?t get into Windows normally (only got into the desktop once, yet shut down within a second following a warning message), so I loaded a Windows CD to the blue Windows Setup stage, I got a message saying ?File setupdd.sys could not be loaded. The error code is 4.? I restarted, I then got ?System 32\DRIVERS\pci.sys is damaged or missing.? in a dark screen. Is my disk still OK? Do I need to replace the HD? Thanks for the answer!

A:Do I need to replace the HD?

Maybe not. Lets focus on your "low voltage problem". Bad power can cause data corruption. Bad power can also permanently kill off hardware, such as a hard drive. We need to first establish if you solved your power issues, and how.

Did you replace the Power Supply? If so, please post manufacturer, model # and rated power output of your current PSU. If not, post the voltages as reported in BIOS.

You can boot from the Vista DVD and run the Memory Test to see if it has any memory errors. From there you can decide if you need to replace the RAM. You could also reseat the RAM (take it out, put it back in making sure it is in good).

A:Replace SSD

Go into control panel>backup and restore and save a disk image to your internal hard drive or an external hard drive. replace the ssd, then just use your windows install disc to put the image back on the new ssd. It`s that easy.

Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

SSD - Install and Transfer the Operating System

Lately, I have been getting computer crashes where my monitor loses a signal from the computer, the gpu fan goes to 100%, and my computer becomes unresponsive (shutdown keyboard command doesn't work). This happens more and more often, to the point where it crashes before the computer can even post. However, when I open up the computer and jiggle around the connections, sometimes pulling out cords and re-plugging them in, this seems to completely fix the problem, until a couple days pass and the process repeats. I am certain I have a loose connection somewhere, but I'm not sure where. Should I replace the power supply or the motherboard? Or could something else be causing the issue? Thank you for any help!

I would start with swapping in a known good pw supply. While the case is open, get a bright light and give the mb a VERY close inspection. Look for any capacitors that look like the pics below.

I bought a new 400w psu with my new case. (my mother board had been flakey with lower watt models and wanted to be safe.) It runs great however the fan is a little loud and I'm looking to quiet it down. I was going to replace it with an Enermax 80mm since they're speed ajustable and quiet. I don't come close to using all the connectors provided. I run a CDR, DVD, HDD, floppy and two case fans off of it. Would it be safe to replace it with a potentially lower RPM model like the enermax?

Hi,

I ask because I purchased a Lenovo laptop (Ideapad 580N) that came pre-installed with Windows 8 which is a nightmare. I recently upgraded to 8.1 because it supposedly had some Win 7 features, instead, it has been worse than Win 8. I've never removed one Win OS and replaced it with another and I have not purchased the Win 7 OS software yet. Is there anything I should know beforehand? HATE is a strong word, but it's the only word appropriate as to my feelings of Win 8 and if possible, I would like to get back to Win 7 asap. Thank you.

Have a friend with a 9-month-old Dell Inspiron laptop who's had nothing but problems with Win XP. We've deleted the main partition and reinstalled XP, but problem (inability to maintain a modem connection) persists. It may be just a bad modem, and Dell is sending a new one, but he just doesn't like XP, and asked if it's possible to put Win 98 on the computer. I use Win 98, so am not familiar with XP, but know that XP uses NTFS instead of a FAT, and can't find anything that says whether or not it's possible to reformat the drive for a FAT-based Win 98 system. Is it, and if so, how (i.e., can I just boot to the command prompt, type "format c:", and hit enter)?

A:PC locking up, even after replace RAM and HDD

You did not say what the Make, Model and Wattage of the Power Supply Unit is on the label on the PSU. You can boot into the Bios to PC health or some such and view the Temperatures, Fan Speeds, and the +12V line for the PSU. If the +12V line is under or over .15 I would try replacing the PSU.

Hello everyone! I have had this laptop for a long time, about 1-2 years now and I was wondering to switch the GTX 960M to a GTX 980M although I am not sure if this swap is possible. Could anyone enlighten me i this is possible? If possible, should I also remove my HDD (1TB) and switch to a SSD? I feel that perhaps an SSD could work better. Hey guys,

I'm having video issues. Shadows in games are dis-colored (red/brown/green shadows), edges are pointy, massive pop-in, etc. I'd put this in the games section, except even watching youtube, the video is messed up with messed up shadows - basically put, my video is crewed up horribly in all aspects from videos to games.

Now, I've switched out my video card and the card is not the problem, the issues persist even trying a different video card.

So, what other parts could be causing this issue? I don't know a lot about computers but I assume RAM/Processor can't cause such major video issues, and it is the mobo where the video card connects?

Please let me know, I just want to replace whatever part could be making this problem happen, it's not the video card.

Hello, I am new to the forum, so I am not sure if this is the right category for my question.

I am preparing to install a new SSD in my Dell Optiplex 9010; I will clone my existing drive to the new SSD. However, before I do that, I want to make sure that the OS Windows 7 Professional 64bit is working properly. Currently, I am not aware of any issues, but I am not a high tech person. So to insure that all the drivers are working properly; is there a way to extract the drivers from the original CD - I have both the OS & the Driver CD, and replace them. Or, is there another process to use. I have read the post Repair Install, will this process repair any driver issues.

I would appreciate any help, thank you for your time

A:Replace Drivers

Hi ... A Repair &Install will not help with Driver issues ... You should always use the Manufactures Website for Drivers ...

As your CD Drivers is likely to be out of date ...
Product Support | Dell US
If you decide to do a Clean Install ... Install the Chipset of course after you have a Network Connection ...
Then run Windows Updates .. As that should provide you with most of the Drivers ...

I'm having BSOD issues for some time now and want to replace my existing RAM modules - RAM summary given in attachment down below. 8GB will do fine. Can you help me find the best replacement(s?) ? 4x2 or 1 8GB and which one(s). I will buy from from this site:-
DDR3 Memory

A:Want to replace RAM modules

You now appear to have 2 sticks of Corsair PC3-10600 (1333); DDR 3, 4 gb per stick; 1.5 volts; unbuffered. Should be 240 pin.

I've never heard of some of those brands at the link you supplied.

I downloaded the qualified memory list for you motherboard from here:

GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket AM3+ - GA-78LMT-USB3 (rev. 4.1)

Your board supports dual channel DDR3.

Every stick on the list is 8 GB. No 4 GB sticks are listed.

Normally, your best move would be to get two 4 GB sticks and run them in dual channel mode--but no 4 GB sticks are on the list.

So, you can get a single 8 GB stick that is on the list or take a small chance and get two 4 GB sticks that are not on the list. If you get a single 8 GB stick, it will run in single channel and you will suffer a very small performance hit.

Which to do is kinda your choice.

Using strictly those from the vendor you linked:

http://mdcomputers.in/products/memor...1a1600c11.html

above is a single 4 gb stick of CORSAIR RAM VALUE 4GB DDR3 1600FSB CMV4GX3M1A1600C11; it's 1.5 volts.

I'd be pretty sure 2 of these would work to give you 8 GB total in dual channel mode.

http://mdcomputers.in/products/memor...1a1600c11.html

above is a single 8 gb stick of CORSAIR RAM VALUE 8GB DDR3 1600FSB CMV8GX3M1A1600C11
I don't think either of those exact model numbers are on the qualified list.

You can download the qualified list yourself and look to see if some of the other Corsair or GSkill or Crucial modules at your link are on the list.

There is some chance that modules not on list won't work, but the list is fairly brief and you may not be able to find an exact match at your vendor.

Just a quick question for confirmation....

you put some thermal paste on the CPU before re-applying the heatsink with new fan right?

The stock hsf on my non-overclocked +2500 barton is rather loud, and I would like to replace it. Is it possible for me to simply buy a new 60mm replacement fan without having to buy a completely hew heatsink and fan?

I was looking at some nice 60mm panaflos that make around only 21 dbas but are labeled as case-fans. Would I be able to screw one of these panaflos onto my heastink?

A:Replace heatsink fan?

Standard case fans are 80mm X 80mm x 20mm. An 80mm fan will do you no good if you seek to replace a 60mm fan. A 60mm fan may work provided your heatsink has standard mounting brackets. However, be advised this will cause your cpu to rise in temperature (most likely) if the fan is slower.

A better solution is to replace the heatsink/fan entirely. I personally favor the ThermalTake Volcano 9 for low-cost high-effectiveness Socket A cooling. You can pick it up online for only $14, and it has three different ways of choosing cpu fan speed: Automatic speed sense based on a thermal probe, which you can place wherever you wish, a rheostat which you can turn to choose the speed at which the fan spins, or a simple jumper to set it to either low or high speed mode.

Case in point: In my shop machine I have an overclocked Athlon XP Barton. It is a stock 2500+ and is sitting at 3200+. I am using a volcano 9, and have the CPU fan forced to ~1100rpm - Barely audible, even when I am close to the computer. If I'm more than five feet away, the machine is inaudible. The cpu is quite hot, in fact at full load it sits at 64C, but this is fine for me.

In the case of sfc /scannow CBS.log showing there are corrupt files and the MUI is also corrupt, where do we get hold of clean MUIs and where do we put them when we've found them? I've tried searching on my Win 7 dvd with no luck. It would obviously be preferable to replace the corrupt MUI rather than just the dll or exe, in case corruption happens again.
I was under the impression that sfc /scannow would scan the dvd if it couldn't find a clean MUI and replace from there, but maybe not?

A:Replace Corrupt MUI

Hello Sluice,

You can use Option Three in the tutorial below to make it easier to find and see only the SFC results in a created sfcdetails.txt file.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Once you have the location of the MUI from the sfcdetails.txt file, the tutorial below can help show you how to find the MUI file at the same location on the Windows 7 installation DVD or ISO.

Extract Files from Windows 7 Installation DVD

Hope this helps,

A formula can not change the value of another cell.So if A1 = 03/01/2015 then a formula in B1 can not change the year in cell A1.You can use a formula to change the Date with a formula, but the result will be in another cell, like B1If you Date is in cell A1 then in cell B1 enter the formula: =IF(A1<TODAY(),DATE(2016,MONTH(A1),DAY(A1)),"")Cell B1 will have the new modified date. Will that work for you? Also, for future reference, Excel questions are best asked in the Office Software Forum.MIKEhttp://www.skeptic.com/

Hi All,

This is my first post here on the forum. I've been using Norton AV for the past year or so. Due to the fact that my internet provider freely offers it as a bonus for being a customer, but I feel that it's just way to resources hungry. Taking up much needed disk space, not to mention it's high cup usage and annoying pop-up's.

Would anyone be able to offer me any alternatives, when replacing Norton's bloated software. To help give my machine it's much needed protection?

Regards.

A:Looking to Replace Norton.

As far as Norton still using a lot resources and high CPU usage, not so true nowadays as older version might of been this way.
Using Norton Security not causing me any issues or using a lot of resources or CPU, see here. As far as cost of it might not want to spend 40-50 bucks to renew it as many other AV out there that are good and cheaper. Norton does get decent rating on detection, i have no issues with popups as can be turned off, this is probably due to yours is also expiring.

Hi Rugar and welcome to TSF.

You have to boot directly from the CD Drive. To do this change your boot setting in BIOS to boot from CD and make sure the XP CD is in the drive.

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I hope it is :)

However I'm kinda unsatisfied with live mail's unstability, lag and 9001 error messages, thus I switched to the famous Mozilla Thunderbird and I'm extremely pleased with it.

Now I'm wondering if there's a way to "integrate" thunderbird into live messenger, so that every time a pop-up appears of a new e-mail, or if I right-click live mail's taskbar icon->E-mail Inbox, mozilla thunderbird will open instead of live mail? I already have thunderbird set as my default e-mail application.

Thanks in advance for any replies :)

The only way I can think of to receive pop-up notification for new mail is if you auto-forward a copy of the email from thunderbird to Live Mail. Then periodically delete Live Mail inbox.

Hi

My system is 4 years old.

The motherboard is a MSI - MS 6585
Chipset SiS 648
ATX Form Factor.
CPU - Socket 478 for P4 processors (Willimate 478 and Northwood 478)
with 400/533 MHz (100/133Mhz QDIR)

Mine is a 2.8 GHz

I have 1GB of RAM - PC2700

I cannot seem to find a replacement mobo.

MY QUESTION

This is my first time changing a mobo.

Because my CPU and chipset are as above - am I restricted to what
replacement board I buy?

In other words, do I have to locate a motherboard with the
exact specs as my old board has?

Or can I upgrade to a more modern one.

I'm really in the dark here - any help would be appriciated.

Thanks, Stephen

I bought a new memory card today - 1GB. I know you aren't supposed to put more memory in than your system can handle, so I replaced the old card, rather than just adding the new one to the computer. The old card says "256 MB" among other things. My system can handle "2GB 256 standard". With the new card, the computer is slightly faster, or at some times a good bit faster. I assume that if the system can handle it, the more memory I have the better it will work. I'm trying to find out if its OK to add the old card again.

I need to replace Explorer XP ExplorerXP has been my file browser of choice for years but it s acting up now It takes forever to start up I m looking into that but if my search for an answer is fruitless I want a free file browser that s just as good Here are the features I loved in ExplorerXP Mass renaming I could trim text from insert text into and do find replace on several filenames at once There are file renamers out there that do this but I don t do it that often to be using I need XP. to Explorer replace a program solely dedicated to that Maybe I can change that Groups You could quot bookmark quot a list of folders into a group that you could access as if it were the quot Folders quot pane of Windows You expand the group and click the folder you want This is the feature I want most Tabbed Browsing Like Firefox Internet Explorer you had just ONE window of ExplorerXP open and could have several folders open within it Just click the tabs to go to them Window View I couldn t find the right name for this You could have or more folders at the same time but have them all take up their own section of space in the ExplorerXP window There s probably more that I m blanking on right now but those are the broad strokes If someone has a recommendation of a file browser that at least has of the I need to replace Explorer XP. features mentioned above I d appreciate it BTW Speaking of file renaming is there a mass renaming app out there that can detect a Creative Zen Vision M ExplorerXP could never see it and I think that s because the Zen doesn t have a drive letter or something nbsp

I have a P III 833 mhz Dell with 384 MB ram. My hard drive is starting to go out, and I want to replace it and transfer the data to the new HD. I have access to another P II 350mhz with 128 MB ram PC.

With this set up, how can I transfer the data from the HD that's in the Dell right now to a new HD? I don't have an available expansion slot to put the new HD into the case. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am mainly concerned about moving my data files from Outlook.

Thanks.

Robert

A:Replace HD in Desktop

if both pc's have then you can join together via usb. http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/dccmain.htm

i always used a network lan etc,

do you have a CD writer, you could write the files here - NOTE outlook does not like readonly files and i have not been able to run from CD - but you could copy to new pc

The outlook files all exist in a single files. so if you create an offline folder and copy all the files you want - you can then copy those and open on a different PC.
or

if its outlook express heres and article on backup to another pc

I have been pondering on replacing my Router. I have the Netgear RT314. Its about 4 years old now. It works but I'm wondering if I would get better performance meaning faster speeds if I replaced it with a newer one. Seems when I plug direct into my modem I see a good deal of speed difference. I have the most up to date firmware on the Router. I'm not sure if the Router just finally starts to loose its ability to function at its fullest after so many years. Its a 10/100.

So I thought I would see what others thought.
Thanks

My BIOS messed up and my computers does not boot up and I read on the website that I have to replace it and to contact my system manufacturer so they can do that but i built the system how do i replace the bios im running win2000 right now and the computer has the award bios.

A:How do I replace the BIOS

the only way you can mess up a BIOS (I mean delete it) is erase it while programming it. This is NOT a beginners job and I strongly recommend beginners do not attempt to flash (program) a BIOS. Once you erase a BIOS, it cannot be restored unless your motherboard has a backup CMOS. Only a few motherboards support this. Otherwise, you have to send it to the manufactuer to have the EPROM replaced. Your BIOS is stored on an EPROM. (Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory)

If you think you want to attempt to flash your BIOS you have to have 2 things. A flash utility (located at the manufacteurs website AND the new BIOS file. Also located there.)

READ the manufactuers instructions CAREFULLY. In most cases you will create a DOS boot disk with the flash utility on it. YES you have to have a REAL floppy drive (not a USB floppy). Your flash utility and new BIOS files will also be on that floppy disc.

using the flash utility DOWNLOAD/COPY the OLD BIOS onto another floppy (as a backup in case the new one doesn't work right) It is VERY important the NEW BIOS is for your SPECIFIC board. :bounce:

then follow the instructions the manufactuer gave for flashing the new NEW BIOS using the utility. In most cases it will be:

A: Flashutility.exe NEWBIOS.fil

where the 1st file is the utility and the second is the new BIOS file.
Some flash utilities let you select the new BIOS when you load it. Some also let you save the old BIOS also.

BE PATIENT. DO NOT INTERRUPT OR STOP THE FLASHING PROCESS. :bounce:
Otherwise your BIOS will be corrupt and you may not be able to boot at all.

I would like to replace my still working 80Gb C: drive with a new, larger drive. I would like to load all of the contents of the old C: drive onto the new drive and use the new drive as my C: drive with all the programs, drivers and Win XP SP2 os. What is the best way to do this. I have not purchased a new drive yet.
