Inspiron N5050 Windows 7 to 10 upgrade fail, need to restore

Q: Inspiron N5050 Windows 7 to 10 upgrade fail, need to restore

When I tried upgrading from windows 7 to 10 on my Inspiron N5050 the screen had the windows 10 logo and spinning dots below it before going black. I had to hard restart my laptop. I contacted dell support who said windows 10 was not compatable with my computer. They said I needed to restore my OS back to windows 7. When I start my computer I can enter the bootup menu briefly before it automatically goes the windows 10 logo with the spinning dots. It stays like this for about a minute before going to the black screen. Any help with restoring to windows 7 from this point?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Just got a new Dell Inspiron N5050 laptop.
Using it about 3 weeks and loving it.
Pop up window invited me to update Windows. Clicked Yes.
While  update was in progress, I accidently turned it off.
Now, It boots up, but moments afterward, it goes to Blue Screen of Death and, before I can even read the Blue Screen, it goes to Black Screen and asks how I would like to start up - Normal startup - Safe mode - Safe Mode with Prompts, etc.
So I want to restore it to an earlier time or just restore back to the beginning (factory settings).
Can I do this in one of the start up options on the Black Screen?

You can find the list of all the processors below tested by Dell on your computer:
(click on image for enlarged view)
You can check the comparison of 'i3-2350M' and 'i7-2860QM' from the link: The lithography and the dimensions of both the processors is same but the Core junction temperature, Maximum TDP (Thermal design power) and the clock speed are way different and may cause system instability issues.
Dell does not offer processor or motherboard upgrades for purchase as discrete items, nor does Dell recommend upgrading the processor or motherboard in any given system. Therefore, Dell cannot support systems in which the motherboard or processor has been upgraded through third-party services or products. For more information, you can refer to the link:

Hi nombie88,
Please run the diagnostics to confirm the hardware functionality. Here are the steps for it:

Tap the F12 key on startup.
Use the Arrow keys to highlight the Diagnostics option.
The Diagnostics starts running the quick test without waiting for user input.
To select a specific device to test, you can tap the Esc key.
Please make a note of any error message that appears on the screen, also make sure that you note down the validation code too.
Once quick test completes, please run a thorough test on the hard drive by selecting the 'Thorough' under Test Mode option.
Please make a note of end result of diagnostics.

If the diagnostics pass, lets check if the hard drive is getting detected. Here are the steps to check that:

Boot to BIOS, by tapping the F12 key on the startup.
Please check under the Main tab, if the hard drive is getting detected as shown in image below:

Please share the findings.

I am need of some big assistance, otherwise I am rolling back to Windows 7.  I have recently reloaded and upgraded my system from Windows 7 to Windows 10 via free upgrade.  There were some reasons why I was hesitant on upgrading and now I remember why.  Every time I open up windows or file explorer, it abruptly closes out in with 30 seconds.  Same thing happens with when I click on the Windows starts button. I noticed that the home screen flickers 3 to 5 minutes as well.  I have loaded a few applications since then, but this was happening beforehand.  Has anyone run into this before, and is there anyway to fix this before I decided to rollback to Windows 7?  This has been very frustrating since I am trying to transfer files to and from my laptop.

Hi Rab Nawaz/jazzies,
If the hard drive is detected in the system and the system does not boot. Please run the Dell Diagnostics to determine if the hard drive has failed.

Turn off the computer. Restart it and pres F12 key at Dell Splash screen.
Use the down arrow key to highlight 'Diagnostics' from the 'One Time Boot' menu.
The ePSA starts running the quick test without waiting for an input.
Please share the error code(s) if any.
If the test completes without errors, restart PC and press F8 key.
Use the down arrow key to highlight 'Safe Mode with Networking' and press Enter.
If the system boots to Safe Mode, try System Restore.

Please revert with the results and I will help you accordingly.

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Sounds like you need to get rid of some temp files build up,
Run this and check the boxes for temp files and thumbnails at the least,

You can use this to cleanup both browsers,
Temp files delete,
Run this as administrator and Start the scanner,
Shut your machine down after it finishes,

I had an interesting problem, and there was a previous unanswered, but CLOSED post that discussed the same issue here:

I wanted to add to this. It seems that through trial and error that the motherboard/power supply is shorting out on a screw on the base of the unit. In particular, the two screws that are NOT on the edges, but towards the center of the laptop. I left those out and the laptop runs fine. I put them in, and I have no power at all. No lights, no fan, nothing on either DC or AC.

Just wanted to add this info in case anyone else comes along with a similar issue.

That sounds like a problem with the Vizio (no drivers) rather than a driver problem in the PC.

Hi, I'm trying to do a factory restore on an Inspiron N5050, and the F8 menu does not have the 'Repair Your Computer' option, nor other expected items, such as last known good config. All it shows is the 3 safe mode options, and the boot windows normally option.

Dell's F12 menu is also missing an option to repair/restore.

I can boot the laptop to normal windows 7, but it's a black screen with a movable cursor. I get the same thing in Safe Mode, black screen, cursor.

I'm trying to figure out why the F8 menu is so limited. I can boot a Hiren's CD and get to a Mini XP desktop from there, and it works fine (no black screen).

I just purchased a Dell Inspiron N5050 laptop computerspecifically because I wanted a computer that would support WiDi (IntelWireless Display) to my HDTV. I had been under the assumption that all currentgeneration laptops included Intel Wireless Display technology.

Is there a way that I can replace the network card in thismachine with one that DOES support wireless display technology or at least addan additional card to the machine that supports wireless display? Or…am I stuckwith a machine that does not have the capability that I need?  Thanks for any help.

A:Can Inspiron 15 - N5050 Support Intel Wireless Display (WiDi)?

Hi Scott_SK,
Welcome to the Community.
To be able to use the Intel Wireless Display the system needs to have the  following minimum requirement as given in this link below :
Replacing the wireless card(Dell Wireless card with Intel) or adding wireless card will not help as this feature should be enabled on the system from the factory.
If your system is within 21 days from the invoice date you may returm the system for full refund and re-order a system which supports the WiDi technology.

A:Can i upgrade n5050?

The fastest CPU that system supports is the i5-2340M.  It has no i7 support.
Given the weak video chip, which can't be upgraded, all an i7 would have done is shift the bottleneck from the CPU to the GPU -- or, if you're still running a hard drive, point out even more strongly where the real bottleneck is.
This isn't and never will be a gaming notebook.  If it's got a conventional hard drive, the single best upgrade would be to replace that with a solid state drive.

I have a dell dimension 2400 that I couldn't do a sytem restore on because a virus had deleted previous entries. I recieved my reinstallation discs from dell and put them all in and followed the instructions. One problem though: THe computer acts as though I have no network adapter. I have an ethernet port in the back and I have active internet plugged in through a linksys router yet it acts as though I have no connection. I've tried installing all the network and internet drivers I could find but nothing seems to work. I've been trying for a good 2 weeks to find a solution to no avail. Any help would be much appreciated, I've been praying for an answer

A little while ago I put a new 1TB hard drive in my Dell Inspiron N5050 to replace the old 500GB one. I used the Windows backup program on the computer and the information on the Windows website. I transferred the system image to a backup hard drive, then installed it onto the new hard drive. I've tried a disc cleanup, defragmenting the hard drive, and I've run all the diagnostics that Windows has and still this thing is SLOW!
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, my computer has an Intel Core I3 processor. I still have the old hard drive with everything still on it and I still have the system image on the backup hard drive. Please if anyone can help, I would GREATLY appreciate it, this thing is driving me nuts (My OLD Inspiron 1420 with a Core2 Duo processor runs circles around my N5050!)

Earlier today i was defragging my registry with CCcleaner and after the requested restart my os wouldn't boot. It showed a screen where i could choose between 'Startup repair' and 'Start windows normally'. I tried both: The startup repair couldn't fix the problem and when i tried to start up normally, it gave me a blue screen. After that i tried 'Windows Recovery'. After selecting a rollback point, i wasn't able to select a drive. The tickbox for the only drive (C was grey and i couldnt select it and thus couldnt complete the recovery. I do not have a windows recovery cd and i have no idea what i could do next. It is pretty important that i do not lose my files... Is there any one who could help me out?

The Windows upgrade media requires a previous version of windows to be present on the hard drive and activated in order for the installation to proceed Meaning if you need to reinstall win you would first have to reinstall and activate your old os Slightly different topic but totally related If you installed the Vista Upgrade the way Microsoft intended without using the quot special workaround quot the license key for your previous os would become invalid to prevent you from running more than one copy of windows with an upgrade license The Windows Upgrade requires an activated os to be present on the hard drive so Vista s workaround can t be used with win Assuming the win upgrade also invalidates your previous license wouldn Windows 7 Fail? Upgrade = t that mean it s impossible to reinstall win because you can t activate your old os I ve been wanting to ask about this for a long time but I kept putting it off so sorry if this has been answered before nbsp

A:[SOLVED] windows Vista system restore fail

Greetings, Jordanixting, and welcome to TSF!

Firstly, the "*then file location*" you speak of, was the location a file on the disk, or a file on the C: drive? I'm fairly certain you will reply with the file location being that of the recovery disk, so that leads me to believe the disk is scratched to high hell, or is somehow unusable (there are many factors that can cause this other than scratches).

It sounds like that disk is fubar, but we may have an alternate route. Many Vista machines were the early stages of the development of recovery partitions. You may have received a recovery disk, but there may still be a recovery partition on the hard drive you are not aware of.

As you boot the machine, look for any kind of "Press "XX" to enter recovery mode" message, and press that key accordingly (you may not be fast enough the first time as you discover the key referenced, so if the message exists, and you find the key, which could be F2, F11, or even F12, restart and try again). If not, try to reboot the machine, and as soon as it starts rebooting, enter into the advanced options menu by button-mashing F8. Once there, you will notice three safe mode options on the top. What we want to try is "Repair Your Computer". Once in there, it may ask for your Windows installation (there should only be one option), and then it will give you various options, including Startup Recovery, CMD, Recovery Console, et all... We want "System Recovery", and not "System Restore". If that option exists, that fantastic! You have a recovery partition! If not, it's time to find, borrow, or buy a Windows disk, because you're SOL.

There's no repairing anything at this point, because as you've mentioned up top, you've already initiated the Vista install process, probably wiping your hard drive clean (if it's a recovery disk, then it requires a format).

Best of luck, and update me here!

Hey...  I was able to access the drive when connected via the USB hard drive cradle on the latest version of Ubuntu.  The older version of Ubuntu only showed the drive but gave me no options to access it.
It appears that the drive might be failing.  I was able to copy the data I wanted.  I was also able to modify the avg system files as directed in the AVG support link provided in my previous post.  However, the system will still not boot.  Now it gets me back to essentially the same place as before but now it balks at file avgboot.sys or something like that.  However, this file was renamed in the earlier step, so I'm not sure what is going on there.
Anyway, I got my data and suspect the drive is failing, so I'm just going to replace the drive and install Windows 10 fresh.;-no-boot;-avgidshasys/

I've been trying to upgrade to Windows 10 for a while now, but I keep getting the error code 8004100E. Windows update seems to think it is downloading fine, but when it restarts in order to configure the windows 10 update, it just boots windows 7 as normal.

I've tried deleting everything in the softwaredistribution downloads folder, but that doesn't seem to help.
I've also tried using the windows 10 media creation tool to download it and create an iso, but this also fails.

I've noticed that when windows update thinks that the upgrade has downloaded and ready to be installed that there is only about 450mb in the downloads folder of C:windows/softwaredistribution where I figure it should be closer to 3GB.

Thanks in advance for the help!

mmm recall monitoring your previous post. This suggestion is très long shot... Nip over to: and run the very excellent, free - and safe to use utility over there.Do NOT use the very obvious big green download button at the top of the page; rather scroll down a wee bit to the four mirror site links, and download it that way. The big green button is an ad promoted item which you neither need nor want. Sadly just about all sites these have paid for stuff carefully positioned to watch the eye; and lead one to think that's the download button to use for item you actually want - and it isn't.The utility will go through the windows installation and fix anything it finds that is not as ought be. It can be run in normal mode; but they also suggest it's better in safe-mode. It offers a few suggestions re' running it - and it's wise to adopt them all. I n fact it will actually do the assorted routines automatically if you let it. It will back up the registry as part of the process; so no need of concern there.I have found it to be very useful couple of times when dealing with apparently unresolveable issues.

A:Windows 7 Ulti-64-bit to Windows 8 CP 64-bit Upgrade fail

Have you read through this tutorial on how to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 CP?

Upgrade Install from Windows 7 or Vista to Windows 8 - Windows 8 Forums[2]=Installation and Setup

Personally, I'd suggest installing 8 on a separate partition rather than replacing 7. Windows 8 is still a test version and has not been finalized. If you're not happy with Windows 8, you can always boot into Windows 7, delete the Windows 8 partition, and continue using Windows 7 without having to go through another clean install of 7.

System restore failed to extract the file ? from the restore point. There was a disk failure during the restore. This might be caused by bad sectors on the disk.

I get the same message, but with a different file name, with every restore point I try, and I have now tried all seven available restore points, going back to 30 Dec 2011.

The computer was working perfectly until 3 days ago when it blue screened, and has not started properly since.

It is a Corei5 with 4 GB RAM and is only 12 months old. I just don?t believe the drive has that many bad sectors.

Given that it won?t start and it won?t restore, is the only solution to reformat and start again?

A:System Restore Fail on all available restore points

Have you done a Disk Check on the drive to attempt to fix/recover the bad sectors? That would be the first step.

I have an Inspiron 620 (mid 2011) - on your support site it indicates:
Dell has not confirmed that this product can upgrade to Windows 10. Some drivers, firmware, applications, and connected devices may not work as you would expect.
For systems that fall into this category, does this mean that Dell will never confirm that this system can upgrade to Windows 10, or just that you haven't had a chance to test this particular model, but you eventually will?

A:Inspiron 620 Windows 10 upgrade

I have the Inspiron 620 and tried the windows 10 update. All seemed ok although the video playback was strange, I assumed codecs would need updating. The next start up came with no sound, I tried updating drivers with no luck, I then tried the front headphone jack and surprise, the sound was fine. After a little more playing around the sound came back on (not sure why) .The next day no sound again and very grainy video, after a couple of unproductive hours I restored the machine back to windows seven. This did not come without problems though, the factory installed OS image has been removed and all system scheduled tasks have been corrupted. It has taken a few days to get the machine running ok but restoring the system tasks is complex and the best way to fix this and I assume the recovery image will be a full restore using the system back up discs I made when the machine was new. I have tried asking Dell the question but they do not seem interested in the many many Inspiron users across the world.

A:Windows 7 Restore after installing XP on dell inspiron n5110

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

It's water under the bridge, but the first thing you should have done is create a set of recovery discs.

The first thing I'd do is contact Dell Support and explain you were unable to create your recovery disks, and that you can't get into your system, but don't let on you installed XP as that will invalidate your warranty.

With a bit of luck, they'll send you a set of recovery discs.

Hi, I spent countless hours and download allowance trying to upgrade my Inspiron 580 desktop from Windows 7  to Windows 10 - this after the initial checks told me that is was compatible (last year).
After going over my data allowance three times, I had to stop the automated Windows updates (Win 10) and contacted Microsoft Support - they tried various time to assist via remote control, without success - and only yesterday the ninth differend MS Customer Support agent checked if the Inspiron 580 is in fact (still?) compatible for a Windows 10 upgrade.
Imagine my surprise and frustration, when she sent me a link that my desktop PC was not compatible - hence my note here now: Anybody can give me hints and tips how to successful upgrade to Win 10, which drivers to look out for (which I might need to change) and what else I need to be careful of.
Thanks for any help and advice!

A:Inspiron 530 (Windows Vista) - Impossible to restore to factory settings? Please Help!

If the Dell recovery partition is corrupted and unuseable you will have to do a manual install.  There is no Dell "recovery" disc, just the Operating System DVD and the Drivers and Utility disc that you note you have.  There may be some updated drivers on the Dell downloads, but use the supplied disc initially and then if you want to upgrade any drivers download and install them AFTER everything is working properly again.  I530 Vista Downloads
HERE is the Dell manual install procedure.  Before you do the actual complete reinstall, back up your user data to either an external hard drive or to CD's as part of the procedure is to reformat the hard drive.  (DO NOT skip the Intel chipset drivers install sequence as that is key to a successful install).

These devices aren't fully compatible with Windows 10
AMD Radeon HD 7570M (with a bluetooth icon beside it??)
You'll experience problems with your display
These devices might not work correctly after the upgrade

I'm not inclined to upgrade if it's going to result in problems either with my bluetooth OR my display. Any change that Dell will release updated drivers to address these issues? Other options?

After a successful factory reset and restore via Windows Backup/Restore, I'm missing a couple important programs (Adobe Acrobat; Paperport). Everything else seems to have restored properly. Is there still a chance these two are lurking on my backup Seagate external drive and, if so, how can I root them out (a simple search yields nothing)

Any ideas out there????

A:Lost Programs after Factory Reset/Restore Dell Inspiron/Windows 7

I would not think so as Windows backup on 7 does not back up programs - only the system image does that.

Windows 7 backup
Windows Backup won't back up the following items:
Program files (files that define themselves as part of a program in the registry when the program is installed).
Files stored on hard disks that are formatted using the FAT file system.
Files that are in the Recycle Bin.
Temporary files on drives smaller than 1 GB

Adobe of course if it was the free version is not a problem as you can simply download it
Paperport if it was this
is problem and the only possible solution I see if you still have any details of the purchase is to contact Nuance and see what they may offer you

When I go to look at user accounts, it's blank too.

I ran Spybot S&D on it, and it seems okay.

Ask Crucial support if you can't get an answer here. Crucial is good for helping with problems like this when you buy memory from them. A13 is the latest bios. IMO 4GB is plenty of ram for this 5 yr old model. Replace the 4GB and use it until you can buy a new computer.
