Choosing An SSD for Laptop

Q: Choosing An SSD for Laptop

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T430 and I find the hard drive slow in not only boot time but reads as well (8 gigs of RAM with an i5 dual core; strictly business with the exception of League of legends from time to time ). I have been looking at both Crucial and Samsung in 500 gig capacity and I can get both at both on sale. The Crucial is their new BX100 and the Samsung is their EVO 850.

Thoughts? Experiences? Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have the EVO 840 in 500 gig size, I really like it, obviously the 850 is even better. I've long been a fan of Crucial though.

However, when I got my 840 (not too long ago) it came with a free copy of FarCry 4. See if there are any bonuses you get with one drive and not the other, because I don't think you can go wrong with either.

I recently posted on reddit trying to get some help choosing between a Dell15R Special edition and HP 15z-J000 Laptops.
Here is the post with all the info: http://www.reddit.com/r/SuggestALaptop/comments/1kdp17/which_of_these_2_laptops_do_you_recommend/

I can see that the 8750M graphics is a little better on the HP, but I don't really know about APU that much. Which computer has a faster processor? I might not get the A10 as I stated I would in the reddit post, seeing as its only a 15% boost in power from the A8 processor. In getting the A8, the prices will be quite similar between the 2 computers.

So if you guys would kindly take a few mins and help me out with this confusion I'm having or have an alternative offer of a laptop for me that would be great( keep prices around $700)

A:Need help choosing a laptop

If you are gaming, get the one with the A10.

My friend asked me to help him choose a laptop. I don't have that much experience with laptops, so I think that someone could help me. He is looking for a laptop that is around $600. He is going to use it for school, web browsing, and maybe play some games. I know there are no gaming laptops for that kind of money, but he only plays older strategy games which are not that demanding on graphics. What would you choose? Thanks for help.

Hello, I need your opinions regarding a purchase of a new laptop. I'm helping a women out at work who has specific requirements for what she needs in a laptop.
As silly as it sounds, the following are her requirements...
15" display, matt finish (no glossy finish anywhere) standard resolution. preferred
Matt finish keyboard. Must have
joystick mouse in keys. preferred
dual core processor. min 2ghz
touchpad centered on spacebar. must have (this is tough, I haven't found any, they are all off center)
2gb ram (bus speed not an issue)
XP SP3 preferred but not required
1 year min. warrenty, 2 preferred

Budget ~$800

She indicated that the laptop will be for general use, no gaming.
If anyone can offer suggestions somewhat meeting the requirements above (specific manufacturer or model number) it would be appreciated!

Thanks...

If Windows XP is needed you can still get it pre-installed on some laptops. Visit the Home & Small Business or Large Business sections of the Dell website.

Hi I need help in choosing a laptop for my school's computer engineering or computer science program. I have narrowed my choices down to either a used Dell Precision 6300 or 6400 or a new Dell Latitude e6420. I like the durability of both models as well as the processing power of the precisions. I will probably upgrade the hard drive to a solid state drive on whichever I get. Additionally while I am not much of a video game player, I do watch videos online and perform video editing. Furthermore while I hope to go into CE or CS I could just as easily go into the mechanical engineering program. I have had 3 dell computers and have been happy with each of them so I would prefer to stick with them. Any help in this matter would be helpful.

A:Please help me in choosing a laptop

Hi and welcome to TSG.

What sort of budget are you looking at, that would help us to try and provide options that are affordable.

If you aren't into gaming then I would say processor speed and RAM are probably your key concerns (faster CPU and more RAM).

Dell do put out some decent machines, never owned one myself but know plenty of people that have and on the whole they seem well received.

A:Choosing a laptop

i would certainly look for Memory - 3GB will be fine for 32bit windows 7, and you can have 4GB but it will not use it all - or on 64bit windows 7 - it will see all the memory
theres $220 dollars difference in the prices listed - what is you maximum budget - and would you consider other makes - the US experts here often see excellent deals available in US every now and again - recently a toshiba was at a very low price almost saving $300 on similar models

i would NOT get anything with just 2GB of memory

A:Advice on choosing new laptop

Offhand, I wouldn't think he needs an i5 processor for his modest needs, but it's certainly fine if he wants to spend that much.

Do you know for a fact that he is going to be comfortable with Windows 8 or 8.1, rather than 7? Is he a mouse guy or does he want to use a touchscreen?

Is Curry's your only possible source?

Look around Curry's for brands like Asus or Toshiba--something other than Acer.

Hello,
I just bought a new laptop (ASUS K53E). I'm currently in Japan and bought laptop here. I'm stuck at the set up page where I have to choose the region and languages. I would prefer English as main language, but I'm afraid I will have problems later with Japanese keyboard, I use both English and Japanese in daily life. There are two things, language and keyboard, that I can choose the language for. And the physical keyboard is Japanese (qwerty with additional buttons).
Also can I add more languages later on? If I plan to add one more language which keyboard is best for initial set up?

Would be grateful for any tips, its a first time I bought laptop outside of Europe.

A:choosing a language for a new laptop English and Japanese

Be sure to make your Recovery Disks and preserve the Recovery partition if you reinstall so that you can revert to the state you received the computer and hopefully make these Setup choices again if needed in the future.

Otherwise languages are only interchangeable when you have Ultimate which provides all of the language packs via optional Windows Updates.

However reinstall with another language is sometimes possible depending upon the region of your license even though the license is language-specific. The choices you have now should also be available by finding an installer for that language to clean reinstall, then activate with the Product Key on COA sticker. However you may have to try it to find out for sure, so be sure to preserve your factory Recovery options and and Win7 backup image of your install after setup.

A:Help choosing the right pc

the 1st problem you have is the links dont work, the 2nd is there are no expansion slots on any of them for grafix you will need at least an 4x/8x agp slot, pci express 16x even better, the Sempron is probably a 754 socket which if it had a good mobo with a gfx slot wouldnt be to bad, the Dell? forget it, the Celeron???, youre kidding. So none of the above. If youre on a real tight budget, you can get a socket 754 but you would be much better off with a Athlon64 939pin mobo with a pcie16x slot so you can upgrade your video for gaming if you so desire.

Hi!
How can I choose the proper UPS for my computer?

Relevancy 34.4%

I've seen a lot of posts about people having trouble with the 12v plug being under 20A on my board (KV8 pro 3rd-eye) On my Antec True430 it was at 26A but the Antec versions of this now wich are Truepower 2.0's they say they have duel 12v plugs for stability wich tend to be from 15A-18A or so, is this for newer boards that have duel 12v slots or something else? I'm not sure what to do because I can't find an Antec PSU that even reaches 20A on the 12v plug. I've always used Antec and trust them, but if I have to go to another brand I'm up for sudgestions.

Thanks,
Drynn

Those are for a 24 pin power supply that uses two 12V rails. I believe your board uses an older 20 pin style ps. Here is a link to a 20 pin unit by coolmax. It has 35A on the 12V rail.

A:Need help with choosing RAM

In general you want to get two identical sticks. Anything else and you are putting yourself at risk of system instability.

That said, I have had some stable systems with mismatched ram, so it is not a rule set in stone so much as it is a high recommendation.

That mobo is an HP/Compaq motherboard isn't it?

Safest bet would be to look up your system specs and find out exactly what speed ram you have in there now, and get a matching stick.

I'm trying to decide which RAM or order, to go with a motherboard that I just ordered:

Asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 Socket AM3/ AMD 890GX New Board - eBay (item 190510537291 end time Jun-07-11 12:46:06 PDT)

I came across some Patriot RAM that is attractively priced:

Patriot Viper II PGV34G1600ELK 4096MB PC12800 DDR3 Dual Channel Memory Upgrade - 4GB (2 x 2048MB), 1600MHz at TigerDirect.com

But it looks a bit strange with it's notched top edge. I don't want to make the decision based only on looks, so I'm posting in order to get some insight into whether this is my best choice?

This will also be used with an AMD Phenom II X6 1090T processor, if that makes any difference in choosing...also the function where I expect that these decisions may matter most, is for video encoding.

The Creative Sound Blaster Live sound card is still available and is a decen 5.1 sound card. Even better if you can find a Sound Blaster Live Digital out of an old Dell computer. This card is much better and the drivers are still available for both of them on the Creative website.

By the way I will be putting a Core2 duo 6600 in with a 7900GS, still looking at power supplys, and now just looking for some ram that will hold up to gaming and heavy program use.

Can anyone find me something from newegg.com that can do this without losing much quality during conversion.

A:Need help choosing

Just do a search on newegg for 'TV Tuner card'.

They range from $30-70+

I currently have a Leadtek card which has been working well for me. The picture quality is not as good as watching a real TV though. Guess you really can't expect that for only $40. Good enough to record my favorite weekly shows to watch and then delete afterwards though.

I believe there are models with 9 and 10 bit processors onsale now which should theoretically produce a better quality picture.

Leadtek, Asus, Prolink, and ATI seem to be the more reliable names in this category.

Hi, I know this question has been asked, but in my opinion, never fully answered, depending of where I look.

I bought a new system : gigabyte motherboard P35-DS3L, Dual Core E6750 FSB1333, 2x1Gb OCZ XTC Rev 2 4-4-4-15 PC 6400 RAM, MSI 8600GT Overclocked...

Now, I plan in "some" foreseeable future to add another 2 GB of RAM but not now, and I don't mind reformatting and start from scratch at any time...

Should I go 32 or 64 bit? All drivers are available for my stuff. Software too for the most part.

I heard 32bit runs faster than 64, and sometimes the opposite. What should I do?
Thanks in advance!

A:Help choosing 32/64...

well in my experience, run both 32 and 64 bit...64 bit being on my new computer...i seriously think 64 bit is more stable..there maybe a couple more error messages until you get the hotfixes and stuff but once you got it set..64 is way better...

its a personal opinion, also from the way your planning to add 4gb ram u will need 64 bit i believe..but if u dont mind completely reformatting it shouldnt matter for now

As of now, I am debating on whether to purchase an Intel Q6600, or an Intel Q9300. They offer similar specs, but the 9300 has 45nm technology as opposed to the 65nm on the 6600, but the 9300 has a lower cache then the 6600.

What do you guys recommend?

I'm planning to upgrade the video card to Radeon6670 and I would like some suggestions for the PSU!

I'm also worried if the items would fit or not...

How would the options above compare to just upgrading the video card to Radeon5450?

Thanks!

I want to upgrade my laptop (Dell Latitude d830) memory from 2 to 4 gb. On Crucial web site using the memory selector I have 2 choices at the 4gb range:
(2 x 2gb) 200 pin SO DIMM DDR2 at PC2 5400 cl 5 and 5-5-5-15 and PC 2 6400 cl6 respectively.

I found a Corsair same configuration PC2 6400 cl 5 @ 5-5-5-18 with better pricing. My question is can I use this memory with the higher DDR 2 800 speed, with the better or same latency/timing numbers without running into any problems?
Using the Corsair memory selector at 4gb they only recommend the PC2 5400, 5-5-5-15. What gives?

I have read and been told Corsair also is a very good brand but they have a very good price for these now and better #'s but I do not want to have any problems with install. Dell's certified memory prices are just ridiculous. I appreciate some insight and the help with this.

Thanks

Hi , I have a compaq 6720s with intel celeron 1.86 Ghz , 1 gb ram and intel mobile chipset 965 . I currently have windows xp but it still moves slowly when it comes for multitasking or runing more complex programs. Iuse this laptop for microsoft office, codeblocks and multimedia . And since XP is very vulnerable now, can I install a version of linux that will make the experience better or should I just keep XP instead ? If yes then what is the best linux version for my system?

A:Choosing a different OS

What do you use office for? Is it just personal use or are you sharing what you work on to other people or collaboratively editing Office documents that you receive? You won't be running MS Office on any linux, so you'd have to use something like OpenOffice or LibreOffice or even Google Docs.

This site has some good lightweight linux distributions and I think that if you are going to continue to use that computer that going with linux is the safest thing to do from a security standpoint. Of those on that page I'd recommend Lubuntu or Puppy Linux.

It is important to understand that Linux is not Windows, and there will be a learning curve. Most people that try Linux bail at some point on that curve.

You can't do 'cheapest' and expect maximum performance. However, $400 isn't a bad budget and you should be looking at a GTX 770. Personally I'd look at an ASUS Direct CU II, if you're gaming on one monitor at 1080p then the 2GB version will be plenty, don't bother with the 4GB. It won't max out every single game at max (Crysis 3, Last Light, Witcher to name a few will tax it) but it will handle most of them and will give great performance.

Hello Techspot,

I was originally going to ditch my Macbook Pro for the newest model, but decided against due to the cost. However, I have decided that I'm going to upgrade my 5400RPM 320Gb HDD for an SSD so that I can get a performance increase. I have narrowed my results down to 2 SSD's, and I'm having trouble choosing.

I am not an expert when it comes to storage, so I need a bit of help with choosing . I am also open to new suggestions as long as they are in a similar price range.

Intel X-25M 120Gb
OSZ Corsair Vertex 2 120Gb

My main concern with the OSZ drive is having it die, which seems to have been a problem according to the Newegg reviews.

A:Help choosing an SSD

Intel has been getting odd reviews although probably more expensive.
You probably read the review here:
http://www.techspot.com/review/181-solid-state-drive-roundup2/

Tom's Hardware is a good place to look for comparisons.

and:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/windows-7-ssd-trim,2705.html
Here is a comparison of sorts:

Are there any sites that do good, practical, every-day comparisons?

The kind of thing like timing the time it takes to boot up with a load of crap-ware installed (since few people have a fresh install for long), or how long it takes to open five instances of photoshop?

I do do some mathematical modelling, but even so I'm less interested in knowing how long it takes to calculate the next prime number under differing OSes and I'd rather know how long it takes to check my emails from a cold start.

Thanks

A:Choosing an OS

try this http://www.maximumpc.com/article/reviews/w...view?page=0%2C0 in all actuality though a lot depends on your hardware to. If its to old for windows 7 Xp is going to load slower, etc etc. Most online benchmarkers are still putting XP pro as slightly outperforming windows 7 in everything but gaming, but not by a huge margin, Im using 7 myself and am so far pleased with its performance, more so then I was with XP.

I am trying to update my Celeron Processor, as it is too underpowered, and is not meant for gaming. What I am asking is what kind of processor should I get? I have a P4M800PRO Socket 478 Via Motherboard. I am not an expert with choosing the proper precessor, and am wondering what is compatible besides Pentium 4.

A:Help with Choosing CPU

Can you give us the make and model of the board? P4M800PRO is the VIA Northbridge controller. ECS does also make a Mobo with this as the boards model number. So any more info would be helpful.

It does appear that most of the mobo models that use this board can upgrade to a P4 and some can go to the Pentium D. You may want to upgrade your memory, too. It can handle DDR400 or DDR2 533.

Hey, I'm sort of a beginner at programming, I have a been programming for a couple of years in Flash using AS3 and would like to move onto something a bit bigger. Before/during my AS3 Era I gave VB.net a little go, and I am then followed Nick Gravelyns tile engine tutorial in C# using XNA framework. I have heard that all the big games use c++ and am interested in trying to learn this.

Actual Question:
So this leads me to this: What is a good c++ API for a beginner (at c++), which can do 2D, but 3D as well (for later, when I get better), is widely used and has a big community? while using c#, XNA Game Studio was perfect, is there something equivalent in c++???

A:Need help choosing a good, under $200 LCD...

Hi wolfram,

I'm no LCD expert, but I did notice that they are all analog inputs except for the last one you linked (the one you "really like")

for that reason alone, that would be my pick. the video card's output is digital, so naturally the best picture will be obtained by keeping the signal digital the whole time. if you bought an LCD with only an analog input then the video card's output has to be converted from digital to analog, then back into digital again in the LCD.

hope this helps

well, I don't know what OS you're using but this is straight out of the Win 95 help files:

To change which program starts when you open a file

1 In My Computer or Windows Explorer, click the View menu, and then click Options.

2 Click the File Types tab.
3 In the list of file types, click the one you want to change.
The settings for that file type are shown in the File Type Details box.
4 Click Edit.
5 In the Actions box, click Open.
