Portege 3500 replacement housing case

Q: Portege 3500 replacement housing case

Recently got a 3500 off of ebay, happy with it as it does the job I want well, however, it looks a bit tatty and has some damage (due to age etc), and I was wondering if anyone knew of anywhere to get new replacement housings for the portege 3500 and approximate costs. I've looked around, but can't find anything anywhere.

Any help pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Daniel

Usually all parts can be purchased from the Toshiba authorized service provider in your country. The technicians should be able to order the original parts from the Toshiba head stock.

Here you can find the ASP which is responsible for your country:

So just make a call and ask for the assistance.

Good luck

My motherboard, a Gigabyte GA-K8NNXP has a broken housing where the heat sink clips onto, thus causing the processor to overheat and crash on boot-up.

Is it possible to buy and fit a replacement housing for the 754 socket or is the whole motherboard trash? :knock:

If so, where in the UK can I buy these older motherboards which is 754 socket, has at least 3 ram sockets and supports AGP?

Can I get another Gigabyte GA-K8NNXP anywhere in the world???

As far as I know Portege 3500 was equipped with the 40GB IDE HDD.
Therefore you have to use a IDE HDDs (not SATA).

Now it would be important to know what max HD size could be compatible;
If the notebook supports 40GB then I think that a 60GB HDD could run too.

I think you should simply google for some 40GB, 60GB HDDs which supports the IDE interface!

I've got a problem with our Portege P3500 (PP350E):
The Windows XP Tablet PC Edition on it is currently still running, but due to a lot of installed and improperly de-installed software, it's very slow, so I'd like to re-install the OS "from scratch".

I've still got the two original "rescue CDs" that came with the Tablet PC, but there's neither a CD-ROM nor a floppy disc drive in the laptop.
I've tried connecting an external DVD drive via USB, but the laptop wouldn't boot from that. (And I don't know if the recovery CDs are bootable at all.)

To make a long story short: How can (re-)install Windows XP TPE on our Portege?

Thanks in advance,

A:How to re-install Win XP on Portege 3500?

The problem is that you can not boot from a USB CD/DVD drive. This is not supported by BIOS and will not function. You can boot from external PCMCIA CD/DVD drive but not from USB CD/DVD drive.

I don?t know if it will help you but I found an old, useful forum thread which describes a procedure how to install windows without usage of CD/DVD drive.

Check it out!

I recently acquired a Portege 3500 as well as a Toshiba external DVD-ROM (model No. PA3246U-1DVD). As I attempt to find drivers for this I have failed horribly (for the dvd-rom). It is connected via a Card Bus card. Toshiba says the drivers should be part of Windows but my system cannot find them. I was wondering if anyone here had drivers for the Portege 3500 for this. If I'm not mistaken they should be for PCMCIA adapters. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

*Side note: Retailers say the Toshiba external DVD-ROMs ships with cd contain both manual and drivers. If anyone has a copy or could point me to a site with them it would be greatly appreciated as well.

A:Portege 3500 will not boot from HDD

I don't think this has anything to do with the partition. You get the black screen because the other laptop is quite different installed regarding Windows ACPI etc.
If you have a usb floppy drive try this:
1. Partition and format the HDD with Fat32 (or fat 16).
2. From your installation CD copy the i386 directory to the partition (attach the HDD to the other laptop)
3. Start the P3500 from a DOS bootable floppy, change to the I386 directory and start the winnt.exe

My external DVD drive only is recognized with this card: "DVD-Rom Drive/for CD Boot, install and recovery (PCMCIA CARD)". It will not play DVDs well...skipping, etc.

When I try and connect it using the "DVD-Rom Drive/for High Performace DVD Playback (CardBus Card)" - I get NOTHING. The drive is not recognized in my computer at all.

Can someone help? I am not "tech-savvy" and have a daughter who wants nothing more than to play a movie on this older laptop (Portege 3500).

A:How to play a movie on Portege 3500?

Did you change the ?PC card controller mode? in the Toshiba BIOS?
This option could be found on the second BIOS page.

Usually it?s set to ?Auto-Selected?.
At first you need to change the ?Device Config? settings to ?All devices? and then you will be able to change the ?PC card controller mode? to PCIC compatible or Cardbus/16bit or Auto-Selected.

I would recommend checking all three options!

A:How to replace screen on Portege 3500

Hey mate,

First of all I have to say that screen replacement and generally notebook disassembling is pretty complicated and tricky. You have to remove a lot of screws you have to be very careful. So it?s not easy to replace the screen.
Maybe you can find some detailed instructions if you search with Google?

And a replacement screen or number you can get from your authorized service provider. Just contact the guys and ask for that, they will help you and can exchange the screen too.

A:Portege 3500 - pcmcia problems

Look in the BIOS for a setting that lets you toggle between CardBus <-> PCMCIA mode.

Check that the slots are functioning ok in Device Manager.

Do you have another PCCard you can test in the laptop?

One possibility is that the pins inside the PCMCIA slot may be bent or broken. Look in the slot with a torch and ensure all the pins are straight.

A:Portege 3500 - 512MB memory modules lead to error

Yes, you can upgrade your 3500 up to 1024 mb memory ( 2 x 512 mb ) but only with the right modules
You need *16 x 32 ( 16 chip architecture )* PC133 , 3,3v sdram modules ( 144 pins so-dimm )

I fear that your 512 mb modules are not compatible :-( you can count the chips on the module, there should be 8 chips on both sides of the module

Huh it is so old notebook model.
I presume you have disassembled the whole machine, right?

RTC battery is placed on the system board. To get RTC battery free you must at first disconnect the speaker harness from PJ16. It is covered with tape. RTC battery is connected to PJ12. It is covered with RTC insulator.

I hope this few info will help you to find the way how to remove RTC battery.

My Portege's DVD drive is making horrible clicking noises and appears to be on its way out. I have read from a thread on here that universal drives might not work as the Portege's BIOS has assigned the DVD drive as slave and that the new drive must be slave in order to work. Is this correct? I really do not want to be doing the soldering fix!

I have another laptop which has a TSST drive in and i plugged this in and the portgege showed an ide error. Is it just a matter of having the correct firmware or is the issue regarding the ide settings mentioned above.

I have shortlisted a Toshiba dvd drive PA3162E-2CD2 but it says it is compatitble with the Portege 4000, 4010, M100 and Tecra 9000, but does not list the A100 as compatible. Does anyone know if this drive will work on my machine?

Thanks in advance.

A:Replacement DVD drive for a Portege A100

If you check User?s manuals for Portege A100 is there a list of compatible ODDs? Problem is that all Toshiba notebooks do not have the same hardware platform and all ODDs will not work on each notebook model. As far as I know pin assignment is different. Because of that you need compatible ODD for your notebook model.

As I said at the beginning usually all compatible ODDs are listed in User?s manuals document. Please check it. If not please let us know.

Normally the RTC batteries in these models are rechargeable.
If not yet done, please let the unit run overnight (not off, not hibernated, not standby - but ON) and see if the issue is resolved.

I think the charge-description/characeristics of the RTC battery is mentioned in your users manual.

A:Hard drive replacement on my Portege A200

Hello James

Unfortunately the A200 is not known to me but the concept is always the same. At first check if you can find HDD cover at the bottom side of your unit. If you can not find it from the outside than is the situation much complicated. It is possible that the HDD is placed under the keyboard.

If you have no much experience don?t do it alone because you can damage something and the warranty will not be valid anymore.

I need to replace a 40mm case fan (which was added as an afterthought), but there are brushless, etc.

How long should this type of fan last in daily usage (in addition to other fans)?

I see costs for fans from $2 to $7 on this size fan (does cost have any bearing on how long they'll last)?

This is for my desktop.

Any fan should last several years in normal operation. I would not expect much of a correlation between cost and longevity.

Get a reliable brand--Scythe, Nexus, Noctua, etc.

Fans that small can't move much air without spinning very fast, so you should expect it to make a racket.

I've had problems with my PCs fans in the past and I've always had to go to a PC shop to have them replaced when they started acting up. I have heard, however, that the process of replacing the fan is easy and a lot cheaper to just do yourself. The fan that I am having trouble with in this instance is the case fan and not the processor fan. In fact, the hardware check (del at boot-up) shows that the fan in question is not spinning at all even though I am hearing it make some funky noises from time to time Anywho, is this a process that is the same from PC to PC or is there a site I will have to visit to determine the procedure/parts needed for my particular case?

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !
I would suggest doing a search for the bottom case using Lenovo's FRU number.  Page #88 of your model's Hardware Maintenance Manual shows a FRU of 90202691 for the bottom case which is used on the G500, G505 and G510 models.  Here is a link to the manual for your reference......

I recently bought a Dell OptiPlex 9010 and when I received it I realized I picked the wrong form factor. I received the USFF version of this product line. I need a case where I can install 2 3.5in HDD comfortably. It will be used as my DIY NAS.
What cases do you guys recommend as a replacement (Non-Dell cases)? I can't get my hands on MT or SFF cases

Does anyone know of a generic replacement AC'97 audio cable and front 3.5mm front port replacement kit available? In this particular pc, the audio cable that connects from the audio header on the mobo to the front 3.5mm jack has been damaged badly (it touched a hot soldering gun). I wouldn't mind replacing the front jack anyway since I have to wiggle the plug in it to get any sound. Needless to say, because of the damaged cable, the sound output is scratchy and very weak.

Any sort of generic replacement would do since I don't care about drilling a hole on the front of the case on this pc case if I have to to accomodate a new jack. I've looked for hours but can't find anything.

Apologies as I'm sure this will seem a silly question to most of you but I have an old pc which has given up the ghost but on which there are a large number of music files I'd like to retrieve. I thought it would be a good idea to take out the old hard disk and put it into an external housing with a usb connectionand retrieve the files that way but the problem arises that I don't know what housing I need for the drive. So the question is what do I need to know?

Any and all help gratefully received.

A:Hard drive housing - what do I need to know?

Assuming that the hard drive is a standard 3" disk drive then any standard external hard disk housing should work.

Numerous diiferent makes of these exist. Generally it is just a matter of installing the drive in the housing

You will need to set the drive jumper or jumpers to Master to use in any external housing.

All the external disk drive housings I've come across do provide isntuctions on how to install the drive in the casing.

A:Housing Removal for Compaq Monitor

Are we talking about an old CRT type monitor? If so, the insides can be very dangerous. Voltages stored in capacitors can be powerful enough to cause injury or worse.. It has been years since I have opened a CRT Monitor, and it was not a Compaq branded monitor. There may be latch tabs that would have to flexed to get casing panels off. Be careful of the front panel, there may be a Degaussing coil around the from of the CRT that could be damaged.

Quick question - will a keyboard for a Portege S100 work in a Portege M100?

Layout looks similar; albeit a different colour.

A:Will a keyboard for a Portege S100 work in a Portege M100?

I think you cannot use the same keyboard because the Portege S100 supports the an-easy-to-use 84-key (US) or 85-key (UK) keyboard and the Portege M100 supports the an-easy-to-use 85/86-key keyboard.
Furthermore the connector of the S100 supports the CN3230 keyboard interface 34 pin connector and the M100 supports the PJ3230 keyboard 34pin connector.

So possibly this could be a problem.
I recommend using the original keyboards released for the each notebook model.

A:Deleted Windows & program housing partitions by mistake... Undelete?

Hello aimOs Welcome to the Seven Forums!

I think you partially answered your own question when stating the Disk Management tool wasn't able to delete the 7 C primary while booted in the same OS installed on it. When going to delete the partitions what method or program did you use?

As for data recovery there are a good number of partition as well as data recovery programs like Undelete both free and paid for to choose from. As far as the 7 installation ??? Hope you created a set of recovery disks or know someone with the exact edition in order to borrow their installation media. Windows will need to be reinstalled.

That's the facts to deal with. Hopefully the next time you go to nuke any partition you label the ones you plan to keep beforehand. Then for those you are planning to remove you can simply them "To be deleted" while the OS can be "Windows 7" or "Data". The labeling will be seen when displaying drives and partitions with the partitioning program(if using one) you use.

I have a Dell Optiplex GX270. When I press the power button, the power button light turns amber, I hear some fans spinning, and the CD drive spinning. However, it never gets to the boot screen (or any screen). If I open the case and press the power button, however, the power button turns green and the computer works fine (loads all the way up and functions like normal). If I close the case after it has started, it continues to run fine. I'm guessing / hoping it's not the mother board or power supply that has directly gone bad... but maybe there is a connection or something? that changes from when it's closed to when it's open. I've heard of something like... the motherboard is shorting out by touching the case... but I'm not really sure where to look for that / how. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

The 3500+ is a speed indication that says, it is comparable to an Intel CPU that runs at 3500 MHz. (or 3.5GHz).
AMD CPUs run just as (or more) efficient at lower clockspeeds.

For FSB, see it explained here:

Now another question comes up regarding modifying the cooling of my case/ computer etc.

I was wanting to carve two 3 1/2" holes in the top of my case, for two 12cm fans. Now I know fully how to do this, however, I was wondering which direction the air flow should go. Should the fans blow into my case? (Like I suspect) Or should I have them blow out?

The orange highlights are the fans I wish to add. Which direction should I have the air flow setup?

A:Case airflow question before modifying case

I would have them sucking air out. Hot air rises, and the side panel fan will hit the VGA's mb, etc and spread out, also they are right next to the PSU. You wont have any really big difference either in or out , but I would have those two pulling the hot air that manages to make it to the top of the case out. and negative pressure tend to run a bit cooler overall.

First thing I would do is unplug it from the printer port. I assume it's USB.

Now go into Control....Printers and check if it's listed. If it is right click and delete it.

Since you didn't specify which 3500 it is go to:

and download the correct drivers. Follow the instructions, and it will tell you when to connect the printer. Should work then.

Sorry for the ignorance, I've just had a quote for a new system and the CPU listed is an AMD Athlon 64 3500 (939), does the 3500 indicate the speed?

The reason I ask is that on the companies literature they also show a similar system with an Intel Pentium 4 650 (3.4GHz) as both are in the same price bracket is one better than the other?

Most of my work is boring office type stuff, CorelDraw and surfing. No games.

A:AMD Athlon 64 3500

the 3500 is 2.2Ghz. The number 3500 indicates that it is "comparable" to a 3.5Ghz (or 3.4Ghz) Pentium 4, I believe.

The Athlons are more geared towards gaming, where as the Pentiums are more for the office stuff, and encoding.

If all you're going to do is normal office stuff (non-demanding work), then I'd suggest you just get whichever has the best price for you. My 2 cents.

EDIT: here's some info for you on the 3500:

So, I'm planning on buying on buying one of these. I know they're different sockets but I'm a little uncertain about my choice.

On one hand the 5400K is newer, has a better clock speed and benchmarks say it's more powerful both in CPU and GPU
On the other hand the 3500 is a tri-core and has more cache. The GPU (Radeon HD 6530D) I think it has some qualities over the 7540D, but overall I'm indecised because of the main figures: 3 cores vs. 2 cores and more cache (1MB/core vs. 0.5MB/core).

So, what do you think?

Right now I have 4 fans running in my case, not counting the 2 in the PSU, but I still can't keep my temp to under 100 degrees...and the case temp is around 85.

I need to know an awsome fan/heatsink combo and past, plus other case fan combos that will keep everything to a safe temp!

Please help!!

Am I supposed to apply some sort of thermal compound on the CPU where it comes in contact with the heatsink? Or can it be dry there?

A:Installing an AMD 64 3500+

Ok, an the amd64 the processor die is not exposed. What you see is a heat spreader that is on top of the die. You must use some type of thermal compound between the heat spreader and the hsf. If you bought a retail processor, it came with a hsf and there is a thermal pad / grease pre-installed on the hsf. In that case you just install the hsf. If you bought an oem processor without a hsf, then you must buy a hsf. It may or may not come with thermal compound.

In any case you must use some type of thermal compound; either the pad or compound you apply. If you go to arctic silver's site, they have detailed instructions on how to apply their product.

I have a packard bell 3500 hard drive i cannot get it working the ligh goes on when i put it power on but once i connect the usb to the laptop it says runtime error 217 at 004EA5B6 i was wondering if you could help me

A:packardbell 3500

Runtime error 217 is typically related to software, not hardware. Have you tried connecting the HDD to a different PC? That will confirm a PC or HDD fault.

I am planning on moving up to Win 7 Pro from my XP Pro OS. My CPU is an Athlon 64 (single) chip. There's a lot of information on the forum about Athlon 64x2 but not single.

Is anyone having any problems with a similar move? How does it run in 64-bit mode?
How much RAM should I have on-board?

Any other info you can think of?

Thanks in advance,

A:Moving from XP to Win 7 on Athlon 64/3500+

What are the specs of this older machine? This will help me decide whether or not to recommend 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x76)

I run 7 pro x86 on my 5 yr/old laptop which has an Athlon 64 3200+ single core processor and 2 Gb RAM. It performs great for its age...

My HP Designjet 3500 printer will not read brand new ink cartridge. Front panel gives me "out of ink" message, and will stop mid-print every time. I replace ink system, it still thinks its out of ink.
I AM DESPERATE TO RUN THIS PRINTER TODAY! Obviously, there must be a re-set somewhere, but I cannot find it. I am something of a novice so, if you have the answer, please walk me through it.
I'm talking about the large ink cartridge, not the printhead. Thank you for any and all help!

I'm trying to overclock my Athon 64 3500+ to at least 2.5GHz and it's overclocking unsuccesfully at stock voltages. I was just wondering what a good bump in voltage should be. Usually I try to stay away from voltages, and that's why I don't know how high to bump it . Thank you in advance  !

A:Athlon 64 3500+ Voltage Help?

I believe most people say up to 10% voltage increase is generally "safe."
I'd first try 1.475 or 1.5v if your cpu is stock at 1.45. I wouldn't really want to more than say 1.575v or 1.6v. More voltage = more heat, so be sure to keep an eye on your temperatures.
