I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a 2003 Dell Dimension 4550 with XP Home Edition and I connect to the Internet via an external modem and cable Internet service.
I had to reinstall my Windows XP operating system and now I can't connect to the internet. It seems I have lost my Local Area Connection. There are no icons displaying when I open the Internet and Network Connections. I have tried unplugging and plugging in the modem, but the hardware wizard does not recognize the new hardware.
Using command prompt:
I tried the ping test and the results showed that it is not a harware problem.
I also tried ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew without any success.
I guess I know enough to be dangerous....
Can anyone help me?
Thank you!!

Vista is the devil. I had internet access through wifi until the modem was changed on the main computer where I am. Now on my laptop it comes up as local access only and unidentified network.

To access the internet in the first place, I had to deactivate the IPv6 setting. I have no idea what I'm doing, so I tried reactivating it again and it made no difference so it's currently deactivated.

The guy from the company (Movistar, Chile... Could it be any worse) said that the new modem had no IP address, and everyone else's computer works fine on wifi.

Do I need to reset something on my computer to recognise the new modem? Or should I just throw it on the ground and claim it in insurance I'm over vistaaa!

A:New modem installed and now I have local access only

Are you able to view the tcp/ip settings to check the ip addresses?
It's possible that your modem is not getting the correct address to the PC.

Check your IPv4 settings (subnet mask, gateway, IP..sorry not on a Vista on 7 computer at the moment)

If your addresses read: "0's"..etc, you can contact your ISP to determine the correct addresses to use (if the technique below doesn't help).

For now, try this:

1. Go to the command prompt

2. Type: ipconfig /release then press Enter

3. Next, type: ipconfig /renew then press Enter

4. Now try to connect.

If you still have no addresses showing under "auto-detect," You can then manually program the: subnet mask, IP address and Gateway with the settings given by your ISP.

Let me know what happens!

Hi there,
i have 2 computers a laptop and a desktop. The desktop computer has all my files and i used to access them wirelessly from the laptop, but yesterday i removed nod32 and got avg internet security (pro) and since then i can't see my desktop in network...
i am pretty sure it's something simple, hope i provided everything needed,

thanks in advance

A:Can't find local pc

I suspect AVG is blocking access - you need to go into AVG and allow access on your local network

some thing like
Open AVG
Tools menu
Firewall settings option
System services
Microsoft file sharing and printing service.
System rule details from Block to Allow
You should also be able to set AVG Firewall configuration to allow a range of IP address - choose a range in your network typically starts 192.168.x.x

I installed XP Home on a Dell Desktop. I received the DSL modem from Qwest, and proceeded to install. I got a good Power solid green light, a DSL solidgreen light and the ethernet solid green light. None were blinking. I got NO Internet light. I called Qwest tech support. They tried several things then asked me to go to Control Panel & open the Network Connections. I found NONE. How do I get the network connections?

Running Windows 8 on Dell Inspiron 1121

I bought a used Dell Inspiron 1121 today and found it isn't in factory configuration. I want to make the factory system recovery disk; but, the Dell checking utility says as follows:

Dell DataSafe Local Backup cannot be installed because your hard drive does not have the Windows Recovery EnvironmentClick to expand...

How can I get the RE on the hard disk if I don't have a Windows 8 install disk or a Dell factory recovery disk? The System Recovery partition appears to be intact. I would also settle for being able to access the System Recovery partition and restore the system to factory state, which I am sure would remedy the problem; but, I can't find any information on how to access it on boot.

To be clear, it appears this is an off-the-shelf installation form a generic Windows 8 install disk so there are absolutely no Dell utilities here.

I am running Windows XP Pro and I have a network printer that I want to install on lpt2.

I have a program that will only print to a local printer. How would I go about doing this.

I tried setting lpt2 to the network printer but it never gives me the chance to give the IP address of the printer.

I also created a TCP/IP port that goes to the printer and works fine however the program ignores that port and wants lpt2.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Is there a "recover console" or simular that can be installed on the HD of a Win7 box?

Can the "repair" option from the install DVD be installed on the HD so it can be accessed without the DVD?

A:Does Win7 RC exist - Can repair from DVD be installed on local HD

System Recovery Options should already be on F8 Advanced Boot Options.

If you store a Win7 backup image on a Primary partition then you can Recover Using An Image from the System Recovery Options. This is a nice option for laptops being carried around. However it's safest to save an image externally in case of HD failure.

However in some cases RAM issues will prompt for the Repair Disk or Win7 DVD before it will complete the reimage. So you might want to test it to be sure.

Hi, my daughter has a laptop with Windows XP Professional, Internet Explorer and Outlook Express for emails. Yesterday it was fine and today it isn't! When we switch on the computer we get a pop-up window that says "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off".
Everything appears to be gone, the screen saver is just a generic green hills, All short cuts are gone, Outlook express is empty and other things she had like msn is gone.

Why would it not be about "find the local profile"? and is there anything we can do to get it back to normal?
Thanks for any advice you can offer.

I have never had a problem logging on before yesterday. The problem is still there,I am still being logged on with a temporary profile, which seems to be the same as starting all over again.I have lost most of my desktop icons ,all my documents and pictures are gone and I need to search out them from somewhere. Then the folders are still there but the documents were lost. There isn't any net connection in my computer and don't connect any external devices like pendrive. Why this happened? How can get my documents as previous in my desktop. Please give me suggestion.

A:Windows can't find the local profile.....

Your profile became corrupted. So, Windows created a temporary user profile for you. Go to Start/Run and type control userpasswords and press enter. Create a new user profile with admin rights. Log out of the temp user you are in and log in as the new user. Now go to C:\Documents and Settings here you will have the user profile your in be branched out. You will also see the Administrator profile and your old user profile. Open your old user profile and copy the My Documents, Favorites and Desktop folders and paste them into your new profile overwriting the empty files that are in there now. You may need to Take Ownership of the Folder. Then just log in as the new user from now on.
As for your other issues like net connectivity, go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager, do you see any yellow marks next to devices? If so, you will need to install a driver for these devices from your computer manufacturers support/download drivers site.

Had a horrible problem with malware which bleepingcomputer helped me with. (thank you) At that time, several profiles were "lost." Got everything back and it worked well for several weeks. Then got the message again that the local profile could not be found/located; loading temporary profile. I used system recovery and went back to the good date I had following the major clean up. All is restored, until a few weeks later. Been playing this game and I'm tired of it. (I'm at home again, so I can work on problem.) What causes this to happen and how can I stop it? Also, using winPatrol and keep getting messages about QuickTime wanting to install something at startup. Been check no, but it gets very aggravating for son and husband as it pops up more than it does on my profile.

A:"Windows cannot find local profile. . . "

IME...anytime a temporary profile is used...that's an indication that the standard profile is damaged.

In such cases, I would create a new profile and move the settings/files from the damaged the newly created one and then delete the old one.

As to why a profile becomes damaged...any file can become damaged at any time, IMO.

Re Quicktime...I suggest uninstalling it (it's one of my least favorite programs). If you must install/use it...then I suggest that you pay attention to all the options that you enable by default when installing it. Due to lack of info provided, I can't suggest more than that.

Because of a problem in a program file located in c:\Program Files (x86), I began to do a system restore to the time before the problem program was installed.

When the System Restore window opens for confirmation it shows that "Local Disk (C) (System)" is status: "Ready to restore" and the check-box next to it is checked.

The next line has a empty check-box for "Local Disk (C)" with the Status: "The drive cannot be found."

I didn't try to do it anyway, so as not to maybe create a greater problem.

Anyone know what's up with the drive not being found? Is there a fix? Windows clearly knows it's there and that it was modified after the restore point was created, because the affected programs that would be uninstalled and installed list shows up in the previous window.

The last 4 or 5 days I've been getting the attached message from NOD32. Finally got round to looking at it this morning. When I try to delete the file, NOD32 comes up "Error when deleting".

I did a search for the fie on my hard drive and I found it, but again when trying to delete straight from the source folder it it said "file not found".

I should have thought to have done a screen print of the properties box but I didn't. However, looking at the location - appdata/local/...8EE38d01 it appears this is a Firefox profile file.

Ever since it's shown up I seem to be having problems with the wifi on the laptop, I don't know if this is causing it or whether that's a new problem entirely!

Thought I'd drop a post here in case anyone's come across this before.

You can get rid of it by using Windows Defender Offline.
Windows Defender Offline runs without Win 7 running.

Follow this procedure:
Windows Defender Offline
? is a free standalone, bootable malware and virus remover from Microsoft.
? performs an offline scan of an infected PC to remove viruses, rootkits and other advanced malware.

Download Windows Defender Offline (about 764 kB)

You will have the choice of downloading the 32bit version (x86) or the 64 bit version (x64).
The link will help you determine whether you are running a 32 bit version or 64 bit version of Windows

NOTE!! You can download and prepare a 32 bit version using a 64 bit version of Windows
NOTE!! You can download and prepare a 64 bit version using a 32bit version of Windows.

You run the 32 bit version on a 32 bit version of Windows.
You run the 64 bit version on a 64 bit version of Windows.

The 32 bit download file name is: mssstool32.exe
The 64 bit download file name is: mssstool64.exe

For the curious, this program was originally name Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper.

You will need an Internet Connection.
Insert 512 mB (Microsoft?s 256 mB is no longer accurate) or larger USB stick into a usb port.
Run the downloaded program--mssstool64.exe or mssstool32.exe
NEXT button
Choose the option On a USB flash drive that is not password protected
NEXT button
NEXT button
The install program will format the usb stick using the NTFS format.
The install program will download about 210 mB.
The install program will name the USB stick WDO_Media32 or WDO_Media64
The WDO_Media32 usb stick will have used space of 255 mB (268,140,544 bytes)
The WDO_Media64 usb stick will have used space of 282 mB (296,165,376 bytes)
You can expect the number of mB to increase as more malware appears.

UPDATE Windows Defender Offline USB stick:
? reinsert the usb stick
? run the installation program, mssstool64.exe or mssstool32.exe, again.
? the update will download about 66 mB (mssstool32.exe) and 68 mB (mssstool64.exe).

Since the malware database is sometimes updated several times in a day, always update before running.

Bootup your computer from the USB stick
Windows Defender Offline will automatically perform a quick scan.
After the quick scan finishes, Choose Full Scan
Select all of your drives

The initial, full scan can easily take several hours, but
Remember, your computer is being very thoroughly checked for all types of malware.

The results will be in 4 log files on your computer's disk in:
\Windows\Microsoft Antimalware\Support

After running wdo and booting your computer up normally,
then carry out following which will put a .ZIP file on your desktop. Upload that .ZIP file please.

A:Some kind of bug but can't find it User/appdata/local/temp keeps populating

Well looks like the problems are gone after MSE updated today and scanned this sucker:
All thumbnails show up as they should, clicking the computer link in my computer instantly pops up my drives and as far as I know my temp folder hasn't grown anymore. Deleting all 11 gigs, 337,000 files right now as I type this to see if it spams full of crap again.
UPDATE All files deleted from the user/appdata/local/temp folder but three that are always in use and never delete. So I'll update if I have any other problems but from what it seems I've skated passed the reload plague and cleaned it.

I have been wasting so much time the past few days trying to fix this issue Any help direction will be much appreciated I have been all over these forums and found SIMILAR issues but not my exact issue Every time I reboot I have reset my audio drivers They work every time afterwards but not until I let Windows 'fix' the problem This has been going on for a month or so I want to know what I can to permanently fix this What I have learned I can get the 'Windows Audio' and the 'Windows Audio Endpoint Builder' to Error 3: Computer. Service find can't The Local Audio on system path start automatically They originally were not starting automatically I modified the logon setting for both of these services like I read about I found a Windows 'MicrosoftFixit ' troubleshooter that did nothing I manually attempted to reset the quot Windows Firewall and Base Filtering Engine' the same way by modifying Audio Service on Local Computer. Error 3: The system can't find path the logon info to no avail This is the error I can't get past This pops up when I try to 'Start' the 'Audio Service' from the services msc window What have I done and how do I fix it Please help quot Windows could not start the Audio Service services on Local Computer Error The system cannot find the path specified quot

A:Audio Service on Local Computer. Error 3: The system can't find path

Hi pcb79,

Please check status of the 'Dependency' for 'Windows Audio Service'; and check if 'Windows Audio Endpoint Builder' is functional. You may follow these steps: Click 'Start' & type 'Services.msc' in the search box and tap 'Enter'.

Also check the following services and ensure that they show 'Status as Started & are set to Automatic':
- Audio Service
- Multimedia Class Scheduler
- Windows Audio
- Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
Note: Please create a system 'Restore Point'; for future use, if needed: System Restore Point - Create

If the issue persists, try re-installing the 'audio drivers' to see if that helps; updating them may not work. To check the 'audio card' installed in the nit, you may follow these steps:
- Open 'Device Manager' > Expand 'Sound, Video & Game Controllers' > Right click and uninstall the 'Audio Card' drivers > Follow through with the uninstall and allow the system to restart > Allow 'Windows' to update the 'Audio drivers' automatically > Check if the issue persists (Please share the system make/model if you face ambiguity)

If you still experience issues, try to reset 'Windows Services' to 'default settings': Services - Restore Default Services in Windows 7

If nothing works, please run the 'SFC Diagnostic Tool' to check the integrity of files in 'Windows': SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
- Follow 'Option 3' to capture the CBS logs and share for investigation

I would also like to have a closer look at the 'System Logs' for a better understanding. Please check the steps listed in the following thread and share details. The tool may not find any 'Blue screen errors'; however, system logs and other information may prove useful: Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions

Hope this helps. Do reply with the findings.

A:Eventlog Forwarding Issues - Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted.....

Again expecting a massive echo in the room when I say this but's there for future reference:
On your Collector Machine change the regional settings - on the formats tab change this to English (United States) and Event Forwarding with the format of renderedtext will work correctly.
This change is obviously only suitable for environments that are pre-production/test labs
Hoping to hear from MS regarding a workaround - will post back....

Good afternoon,

I once found a way to find out the date (and time!) that Windows XP was installed on a system. It was a command that you typed in and it returned with this information.

I can't for the life of me find this again! I've trawled and can't lay my hands on it.

Is anyone aware of this, or another way, to get this information out of Windows???

Thanks in advance.

My computer worked fine, but then one of my cables to the ssd fell out without me noticing it. I installed os on the HDD (used to be on the SSD) and when i was done i wiped the hole HDD with DBAN. After that the os worked nice on the SSD, but i could not find the hdd. I went to the BIOS and found it there, but it was not possible to find it on my SSD. I went to the disk management, but did not find any disk or unlocated space. What is the problem? Anyone have a clue?

A:How to find installed programs

Hello Abdullah, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Usually installed programs will create a shortcut to be listed in your Apps screen.
Apps Screen - Open in Windows 8
If not, then you could go to installed location to create a shortcut from the program's .exe file to use where you like, or "Pin to Start" or "Pin to Taskbar" the .exe file.

Hope this helps,

I hope I'm in the right forum, this could be a hardware issue. I have a brand new HP DV6000 laptop w/Vista installed. (I couldn't get it with XP) I purchased an identical hard drive & swapped them. When I try to install XP it gets to the point where it asks do you want to install? When I hit enter I get a screen telling me setup cannot continue because setup did not find any hard drives installed. I have another HP DV6000 with XP Pro so I tried that hard drive but as soon as it tries to boot it blue screens with a fatal system error & wants to reboot. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am running Windows 7 64-bit. I am supposed to have AVG Internet Security 2011 installed on my computer. When I boot up, the User Account Control asks if I want to allow AVG to run. It says it's installed on my hdd. I say yes. When I go into the hdd, I cannot find AVG anywhere except in the folder Program Files(x86). And the actual executable is not in there, just a few odd files. I have a feeling that the installation might have been interrupted, but every time I try to continue or reinstall it nothing happens after the file extraction hits 100%. It is not in the control panel applications, and when I search for it, nothings shows in the results. I don't know what other information might be pertinent. I am tired, and I have been working at this for a while now.

A:Cannot find a program that says it is installed

Run the AVG removal tool: Remover eliminates all the parts of your AVG installation from your computer, including registry items, installation files, user files, etc. AVG Remover is the last option to be used in case the AVG uninstall / repair installation process has failed repeatedly.Download a fresh copy & reinstall (if you still want AVG)

Yesterday i bought a new motherboard MSI G41M-P26 and i reinstalled windows because of this problem (im using win8 release preview) i installed Realtek (everything went fine) and i restarted my pc, after that i couldn't find the realtek icon anywhere, even on the program files the realtek folder is empty there are only 2 files (RtlUpd.exe can't even run it, and USetup.iss) the HDA folder is empty also. I reinstalled it many times, tried various versions of Realtek, it's not even on the Task Manager. It seems like it's installed but i can't run it. I have everything up to date, Please help me, it's really important for me to use realtek.
PS : i have the sound in case you were wondering. But i need realtek. It has so many good options and i'm using a 5.1 home theater.
I didn't have this problem with my old motherboard, and it was also MSI.
Sorry for my bad english.

A:Where could i find my new installed software

Hello Astorre, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Normally when you install a program, it will automatically pin a shortcut of that program to the far right of your Start screen. You may need to scroll all the way to the right on your Start screen to see it.

If it doesn't, then you can navigate to the .exe file of the installed program, and "Pin to Start" it to have one.

Hope this helps,

An ex coworker of mine installed Windows 7 Pro on a pc for one of our clients, which was never activated. Now it's 30 days later and it's asking for the key. The sticker with the Windows 7 Pro OEM key on the side of the box is rather illegible. I input the key in an attempt to activate, but it fails. My issue is I don't know if I'm putting in the wrong key or the Windows 7 Pro that was installed is not OEM version. Is there an easy way for me to tell if it is OEM or not without having to reinstall?

Thanks in advance,

Not asking you to post the results here (just lazily copying a standard post). In the output look at the Product ID Type.

Please run the MGA Diagnostic Tool and post back the report it creates:
Download MGADiag to your desktop.
Double-click on MGADiag.exe to launch the program
Click "Continue"
Ensure that the "Windows" tab is selected (it should be by default).
Click the "Copy" button to copy the MGA Diagnostic Report to the Windows clipboard.
Paste the MGA Diagnostic Report back here in your next reply.

Yet when I slide in the installation cd and click install I'm prompted to repair or uninstall which confirms the install was successful. Even downloading software does the same thing. A:MS office installed but can't find in windows 8

I would suggest uninstalling the sofware and installing it again. Shouldnt be too difficult to do that, and to be honest it will probably fix your problem more easily than trying to degub the issue and attempt to fix.

I unplugged power to HDD prior to installing SSD and plugged it back in and get nothing.

A:New SSD installed and working can't find existing HDD

Hi there,

Have you tried double checking inside your computer that all the power and sata connections are plugged in correctly and where they are meant to be?

Have you tried checking in the BIOS if the hard drive is detected?

Let us know how you get on,

I am having a problem with windows XP, when I try to enable fast-user switching it gives me an error that says I need to uninstall NetWare to use fast-user switching.

I searched and I found out that to uninstall NetWare I need to go to Network Connections > Choose my connection > Properties > Highlight the Client for Netware entry > Click Uninstall

And the problem is I can't find the "Client for Netware entry", all I see is this:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler
Microsoft TCP/IP Version 6
So What can I do to uninstall NetWare?

And I don't even know how it got enabled, maybe the virus that infected the computer?

Hello Gurus!

I am loading Server 2003 on my server. I just bought Segate SCSI U320, its 73gig SCSI HD. I did Ctrl+A >>selected Disk Utility>>Selected my HD & formatted it. I went back into Array Configuaration Utilities & Initialized the disk & Rebooted. Once booted it finds the HD and then goes to the CD rom to load windows Server 2003. I hit F6 to load the drivers (not sure what SCSI drivers to load but I think SCSI 2960 drivers) The floppy was in and it took the drivers and then next thing you know it says:
Setup did not find the HD installed on your PC. I had to hit F3 to quite.

How can I resolve this issue. Am I downloading wrong SCSI Drivers? If yes what kind should I get and how do I know which one to get for that specific HD (ST373307lw)

A:Setup did not find SCSI HD Installed on your PC.

my desktop is Dell Dimension 8400. I replaced the SATA with a new one (seagate). The computer recognised the HD in both BIOS and chkdisk. I partitioned it to 2 NTFS parts, and set the primary active (used PQMAGIC, a very old version back to year 2000). Then I run boot from CDROM, and windows setup showed "SETUP DID NOT FIND ANY HARD DISK INSTALLED IN YOUR COMPUTER. ... SETUP CANNOT CONTINUE, PRESS F3 TO QUIT SETUP".

I don't know how many times I have got this message. Can anyone help me please. Thanks a lot.

A:windows setup cannot find installed HD

Have you tried copying the Sata disk drivers to a floppy/cd and pressing F6 just after the setup starts... remember that windows needs this extra drivers to "see" the disk.

I can't vouch for chkdsk, but the Bios would see the disk regardless if it could access it or not.

A:How do I find if a Key logger or spyware is installed in my pc?

Hello sweeper47, Keyloggers are meant to be hard to find and don't usually appear in Programs and Features. It is your pc, is it your network? It probably would show up in AutoRuns. Why don't you have the guys at TSF Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help section have a look at your system. They've got some pretty slick programs to uncover anything and are pros at it. Here's the link.

A:installed slave hardrive, but now can't find cd-rom drive

Welcome to TSG

It seems like both of your hard drives are working so whatever you did there must have been right.

As far as the CD drive one thing to check would be the connections to make sure that nothing came loose during your time inside the case. Is the CDROM all by itself on a cable? It's "normal" that the hard drive got the "D" and your CDROM should have been given another letter like "E".

Dell M90; XP SP3

Got the "Disk Antivirus Professional" bug and tried to overcome it but kept ending up with a black (or sometimes blue) desktop w/ cursor.

Ended up doing a fresh install of XP and just now got all updates.

All my programs are still on the computer. Is there a way to get XP to recognize them without me having to re-install each one?

I was hoping I could regedit something to get XP to see them.

A:After fresh install, can XP find installed programs?

Ended up doing a fresh install of XP.....All my programs are still on the computer

I am not sure what you mean by Fresh Install, but that usually would mean you Formatted (erased) the C: drive and installed Windows.
If you just reinstalled Windows, without formatting, then you will have to reinstall all of the Programs because you have overwritten the Windows Registry in the C: drive, but not the Program Files directory.

I successfully (according to Window's screen) installed (from a disk) a copy of MS Office Ultimate 2007 v12, but cannot find it on the computer or open it. I saved the install to my Desktop, but when I click on the icon, the computer just seems to want to install it (again). No icon for Office appears anywhere.
There was a trial copy of Office 2013 pre-installed on the computer, and so I used that for the one month trial period, but now that is all that opens (e.g. when I click on the MS Word icon) and the prompt says the features have been disabled and direct me to purchase Office 2013

I did a compatibility check of Windows 8.1 and Office 2007 and they show up as 'Compatible' on Microsoft's site.

Any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated!

A:Installed MS Office12 (2007) but can't Find It or Open It

Did you go to the start screen (the one with the tiles) and then click on the down arrow icon that shows up in the lower left corner if you move the mouse? From there you should be able to find the newly installed copy. However, if you had a trial version installed at the same time you installed the paid version, you may end up having to uninstall both and then reinstalling just the paid version.
