Preferred Solution: Accidentally disabled display adapter and can't see, safe mode or VGA mode won't work

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just recovered from accidentally disabling my display adapter I logged into linux see, mode or Accidentally work disabled VGA safe adapter can't won't mode display and to get on the net and found the thread solved by Spike and also by glowingnissan on this issue and found that neither of these threads solved the problem exactly Spikes solution finally ended Accidentally disabled display adapter and can't see, safe mode or VGA mode won't work up working with one change and I thought I would post it here in case anyone else had the same gut wrenching experience thanks Microsoft Phenomena accidentally disabled the display adapter and after the XP loading screen you get nothing Dead monitor Safe mode hangs each time and quot VGA Mode quot does nothing different Solution Here is Spikes original solution thanks Spike with a note for step Also beware of quot found new hardware quot wizard etc popping up at system startup interfereing with these instructions I recommend pressing alt-f Accidentally disabled display adapter and can't see, safe mode or VGA mode won't work a few times after startup to make sure any startup programs get closed and then doing these instructions Good Luck Log Accidentally disabled display adapter and can't see, safe mode or VGA mode won't work in If you log in automatically all well and good if not use the up and down arrow keys to go to your user and hit enter to select if you normally have to enter a password then do it now and hit enter again press and hold the windows key and tap R this is the keyboard shortcut to the run box type quot devmgmt msc quot without the quotes and hit Enter this opens device manager wait a few moments to make sure device manager is open and then hit the TAB key once this brings the selection onto the device list cancel this step and jump to step with SP as you start in device view by type as default and pressing alt-v will pop you into the view menu new hit ALT V together which switches to viewing devices by type hit D TWICE which should bring you to Display Adapters hit the RIGHT cursor key to open the dropdown selection and right again to go to the first device in that selection hit Alt A together to open the context menu for your adaptor assuming it s the first in the list hit the Down cursor key which selects Enable note if you ve got the wrong device this will select disable for that device then hit Enter to enable it If you get a number of dialogues as I just did for a seperate device I m not about to disable my own display just use a combination of enter Y for yes until they are finished I found that pressing Y Y enabled the adapter and then proceeded to reboot your system Having speakers on may help for this process so giving you a few audio cues for what you re doing I just went through this entire process on my machin as I typed it so I know it works of course I know this because I was looking at it be carefull you don t mistype or hit the wrong keys nbsp

okay... so i was trying to get into safemode so i could run an antivirus scan, problem is whenever i tried going in safemode the blue screen would pop up and computer would restart. now for some dumb reason i thought maybe i could get in safemode if i used msconfig and selected safe mode from the boot menu. so the computer restarted and now it boots in safemode but the blue screen and restart happen everytime now. ive tried "start windows normally" but that boots in safemode.... ive tried "last known good config..." and that too boots in safemode. so now im stuck, i cant get on windows. any help please?

im willing to start over but i dont know how to do that from here

Please do not post your Hijack this logs here. Due to Forum Rules we cannot assist in malware removal here. Have you tried a different browser (Chrome, Firefox etc)? When you say IE only works in Safe Mode with Networking, Do you mean you boot the computer normally and use IE (safe mode) or are you booting the computer into Safe Mode with Networking? In other words you can't boot normally?
If you feel you are infected, please click on the Virus/Trojan link in my signature and post there for more help.

I have tried to run IE7 in normal mode and I always get a "The address is not valid" window. I have a good internet connection and Firefox works flawlessly. I do not have connection problems. If I ran IE7 in Safe Mode with Networking, I can bring up webpages with no problems. I thought that upgrading to IE8 would cure the problem but I am still getting the exact same problem. I have tried checking many things and have tried many suggestions that I have found through web searches but nothing works. Please help!

Not sure what I have stumbled upon here. Was trying to download some music from SugarSync that I had from another PC, realized I did not have a music player installed and tried to download VLC and that's when things went bad.

I had run my Anti-Virus (Avast ) and it found nothing,
I just now opened it (in safe mode) to obtain the official name/version and found it to display a large red banner declaring I am unprotected and the Avast service turned off.
None of those controls on that panel work

Am assuming some infection did this as I did not turn it off!
When I clicked Scan it displays "Unable to start scan. There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper"

This is an Asus G73JW Laptop
Windows 7 SP1
I use
Avast Internet Security
Spybot S&D
CCleaner

Any Idea as to what I have run into here?

Thanks,

A:Fine in Safe mode, but in normal mode, icons and Startmenu don't work

Have you performed a System Restore recently?

Download your version of Avast, but don't install it yet.

With the computer offline use the Avast uninstall utility to uninstall your current installation.

Once you have uninstalled the old version, install the version you downloaded.

Hi Horan. Welcome to TSF!

Since you are able to boot into SAFE MODE with COMMAND PROMPT, do that and then at the prompt type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotation marks) and let it run. After it completes that, make a note of any messages and then reboot your system and see if that helps.

Also, what happens when you just use the touchpad and don't plug in a mouse? Any difference or does it still lock up?

Good day!

Mike

Now it takes an absurd amount of time to boot up and once I'm in, the system once again freezes if I try to do anything. I am able to get into Safe Mode and it runs fine with no problems. Hello I am new here and Safe Mode XP Started In Reinstalling Accidentally have tried Accidentally Started Reinstalling XP In Safe Mode to see if this problem had been addressed before but with no luck So forgive me if I missed it The problem was I had a very nasty piece of malware on my computer little red circle with white x and yellow triangle with black exclamation point in the tray near my clock that always claimed to be Windows Antivirus and tried to advise me to download anti spyware software that was obviously just more malware The website they would redirect you to was fake No matter what part of it you clicked it would just try to download a exe to your computer Even when you right clicked on it it didn t have a closing option so since my antivirus and spybot wasn t working to destroy this malware I decided to do a reinstall of Windows where it would refresh all my windows files and leave my other partitions and files alone Well I stupidly left the msconfig in safe mode booting and then reinstalled windows but when it got to the safe mode screen it says quot Windows setup is restarting quot then an error dialog box comes up and says quot Setup cannot continue in safe mode quot with the only button option being quot Ok quot So I click okay and the computer restarts then it boots up to safe mode again and gives me the same error messages as though the windows XP setup was still trying to set itself up I let it go again and this time tried taking out the setup CD That didn t work either I then tried starting the XP install again but planned to cancel it so that it will not try to set up any more but that didn t work either The only way I can find to change my boot settings is to use the run then msconfig but I cannot reach that because of the xp setup error that reboots as soon as I press okay I have tried pressing F while booting up but that doesn t give me a booting mode to enter like Safe Mode or Default It just gives me a list of drivers to boot up floppy dvd drive and hard drive If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this problem I would be very grateful there is a lot of school work of mine on the computer I still hadn t had a chance to back up Also would be appreciated if anyone could identify the malware that was bugging me and best ways to destroy it Thank you nbsp

A:Accidentally terminated a process. Computer running like safe mode :( please help.

Stopping any process in Task Manager...only stops it until the system reboots...at that time all processes listed begin anew.Doing such...cannot cause any system complications beyond rebooting. So your cause/effect reasoning seems to be wrong.System manufacturer and model?Do you have recovery/restore disks...or such partition?Do you have a MS Genuine XP CD?I suggest taking a look in Event Viewer and noting the base detail for the last 5 errors (not information items, not warnings) listed there. Post the Source Category and ID data for each. How To Use Event Viewer - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/40108/how-to-use-event-viewer/ Louis

Added note* Currently working on the problem through remote desktop. It will allow me to logon.

Came into work this morning and have 2 stations that that have a KB problem. keyboards are standard PS/2 with no special drivers.
They work fine except to the point of CTRL-ALT-DEL. At that point they are disabled in any boot mode. :)

I have scanned the stations accross the network and found no viruses.

I am going to try and dig up a USB keyboard to test that option.

Anyone have any ideas other than a system restore or reinstall?

Thanks..

A:XP PRO, KB is disabled even in safe mode.

Is it that you can't run task manager, or that your kbds cant recognize the crtl alt del key sequence? To thest this, go to Start>run>type "taskmgr" w/o quotes.

please help===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. The reason we ask this or do not respond to your requests is because that would remove you from the active queue that Techs and Staff have access to. The malware staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response, there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. That is why I have made an edit to your last post, instead of a reply. Please do not multiple post here, as that only pushes you further down the queue and causes confusion to the staff. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible.Thank you for understanding.Orange Blossom ~ forum moderator

Anyone come across this?...Not only did the FBI virus disable regular mode, but it took over safe mode with and without networking...Can't even get to a windows screen.. I will say my customers already fell prey to the virus and sent them $200.00. Maybe that's why safe mode isn't even an option for removing the virus..Any thoughts?

I have windows xp and I accidently unplugged my mouse with the computer on q. how can I get into safe mode using my keyboard to enable the mouse again

A:get into safe mode with disabled mouse

Assuming that your keyboard is functional there are a couple ways you can try.

On boot, as soon as the first screen appears, press F8 repeatedly until a menu appears.
Use the keyboard cursor directional keys to select "safe mode" and press "enter." The computer should boot again and the screen will have low resolution with the phrase "Safe Mode" in the corners.
Boot Into Safe Mode from Windows

Click on "Start", then "Run". In the empty box, type "msconfig" and hit "OK"
After a window pops up, select the tab that says "BOOT.INI".
Look at the bottom of the tab and find the "SAFEBOOT" option. Check the box and the click "Minimal".
Click "restart" and the computer will go through the procedures for rebooting in Safe Mode.
When you are done with Safe Mode, you will need to access MSCONFIG again and uncheck the "Safeboot" box to return the computer's settings for a normal boot.

Yesterday my father called me over and showed me that the computer he uses was redirecting him from the links he clicked in a google search, to random websites (spam/scam websites). I ran a microsoft security essentials scan thinking it would do the trick, it found nothing. I disabled internet connection, and used a separate computer to download spybot. used a flashdrive got spybot installed on the infected computer (with the updated security definitions too. Spybot found one little tracking cookie. I tryed to boot to safemode to run spybot but whenever i try to boot to safemode it restarts and i have to use the last known good configuration to boot normally. Downloaded repair registry files for xp sp3 (the os i have installed). This did not help. So i gave up and posted on this site. Any help/suggestions/ideas would be great..

Hi,

I'm only able to open Outlook 2013 in safe mode; it hangs in normal mode. I tried disabling all add-in's with no success.

Microsoft Community's response is complete uninstall of Office (via 'fix it') and re-install - which worked, however now it's happened again. I can't keep re-installing Office entirely. Any ideas?

Thanks.

My problems are muti-faceted:

1. Anti-Malware Doctor is on my computer. I tried to get into safe mode, and I tried to download anti-virus programs, but "exe" files would not work.

2. My mouse works and my keyboard is disabled.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Please copy this page to Notepad and Save it to your Desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

------------------------------------------------------

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

------------------------------------------------------

Download ComboFix from here

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

------------------------------------------------------
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right-click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
Get help here
Double-click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes to continue scanning for malware.

Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Apologies for the long delay in response. We have a large number of HijackThis logs to handle and it?s taking us longer to catch up. If you haven?t received help elsewhere already and still require assistance please perform the following:Download RSIT by random/random and save it to your desktop.

A:Virus Disabled Internet, Safe Mode, Start Run

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Apologies for the long delay in response. We have a large number of HijackThis logs to handle and it?s taking us longer to catch up. If you haven?t received help elsewhere already and still require assistance please perform the following:

============================

Please download and install the latest version of HijackThis v2.0.2:

CLICK HERE to download the HijackThis Installer:Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Double-click on HJTInstall.exe to run the program.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.
Once installed do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

====================================
Download RSIT by random/random and save it to your desktop.
Double click RSIT.exe to start the tool and click Continue at the disclaimer.
When the scan completes it will open a log named log.txt maximized, and a log named info.txt minimized.
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of both here.

Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don?t hear from you in three days this thread will be closed.

Hi Jason,

Welcome to TSF!

This sounds a lot like the Conflicker Virus that was hyped for April 1st, 2009. Microsoft KB962007 details it's implications and removal.

First at all sorry for my bad English and if you don't understand something I've windows XP and GB of RAM When I turn on the PC it starts for about minutes and it's slow like my RAM has been disabled and my graphics Mode in things normally few windows if ( launches as disabled are Safe but ) driver doesn't load as if in Safe Mode First time when it happened my resolution and everything had been restarted If you want me to be more specific I'll do my best in next reply One windows launches normally but few things are disabled ( as if in Safe Mode ) more thing I want you to know Before it happened I tried to connect my phone to the PC and it couldn't be read I didn't know what happened I took me by surprise 'cuz it always worked well I tried to install it but I was doing some things by chance so I risked and installed something I really don't know what was that some other kind of USB porting or something like that after its installing windows asked me to restart my PC before the operation could take place and so I did After a new start up happened all the things I mentioned above Thank you for following hope you will find a solution Thanks once again

A:windows launches normally but few things are disabled ( as if in Safe Mode )

Start>(type) "msconfig" and verify that you are starting in "Normal" mode.

Turn off all non-MS services, and all startups and reboot. Report results.

Start>Settings>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager

Click "show hidden devices" and report all red & yellow-flagged devices.

Start>(type)"cmd" and at the command prompt type "chkdsk /f" and schedule a chkdsk to run on next reboot. Watch scan carefully and report if it finds & fixes any errors.

i have windows home xp edtion on parkard bell.in safe mode it is fine, but when on normal bootup mode it will hang up after 2mins aprox(then restart saying crit error, check hardware etc and being to dump files kernel),on a blue screen.

i tried a different graphics card, but no joy.so i replaced the hdd drive and put a fresh copy of windows xp pro edtion on,but it loads all the files(i have not pressed f6)i just let it run its course on the disc, then it hangs up on the blue screen again with the words(crit error 0x0000007f)check hardware etc and if this is the first time you have seen it try starting windows again.

Thankyou for all your time.

A:Solved: xp safe in safe mode fine...mormal mode blue screen

Start in Safe Mode and look in C:\Windows\Minidump for crash log files with a dmp extension, like Mini071008-01.dmp. Zip 4-5 of the latest ones and post here as a ZIP or RAR attachment. The log file contains information useful to determine what caused the error, most likely hardware.

I'm new here and in hopes of getting this resolved. I just installed the new Norton Systemworks 2005 and rebooted after installation. When the boot screen got up to the blue screen with the Windows XP logo before displaying the login names where you put in your password, it just stops. I restarted a few times and waiting a few more times thinking it may need to 'finish' installing. But each time gave the same results. Finally, I went in with 'Safe Mode' and got in with no problems. Tried again in normal mode after looking around for any obvious problems (none found)... back to square one. Tried again in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and it failed like normal mode so I suspected a networking problem??? The last thing I tried which made me mad is that I tried to uninstall Norton Systemworks in 'Safe Mode' and that failed!! Anyone in these forums know the cure? :dead:

A:Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

Just a thought

Safe-Mode
Start \ Run \ msconfig \ diagnostic startup
disable any services attached to your most recent install and restart
should get warning next boot about using msconfig, its ok
One key service that needs to be available is the installer service
Try the uninstall, if doesn't complete
Try the uninstall string in the registry only if you know what you are doing

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Under it you will see a list of installed programs. Some don?t show up as words but you can figure out what they are by looking at their values. What you are looking for is the uninstall string. Double click that key as if you were going to modify its value. Do a CTRL + C to copy and then exit the registry editor.

Go to START \ RUN and paste the uninstall sting and hit enter. This should launch the uninstall.

Just a thought though as I am not infront of a test system at the moment. You should research this a little further so you have a clear understanding of what you can and can't do with msconfig.

or simpler yet

Safe-Mode

Start \ Programs \ Access. \ System Tools \ System Restore

Select restore point prior to install of whats giving you the problem.

Again, Good Luck

PS If you try to install it again, turn of antivirus and other open programs etc..

A:Windows 7 won't boot, unless safe mode or graphics driver is disabled

Welcome to the Seven Forums

Do you have Windows Update Settings set on automatically download and install? Windows Update Settings - Change
If so it could be that your graphic card is getting updated without you knowing it, being that it works okay after you have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers that works.

Hello,

Recently my dad's computer had a corrupted hive and boot.ini. Via this website, I was instructed to run a chkdsk /r while in the recovery console. Everytime I used his OS disk to get into the recovery console, it prompted me for a password and I didn't know it (nor could I leave it blank). I decided to use my OS disk from my computer and I could fix the problem. Now, though, everytime I startup the computer, it prompts me to start windows normally, in safe mode, in safe mode with networking... To give further information...on that same screen there is an option for Windows XP and Windows XP Home Edition. Don't know if that has something to do with it. They both work though when I press enter on either one. Could anyone help me stop the computer from prompting me??? Thank you for any help.

I can not boot in normal mode. Everytime i try the system gets hung up at the windows loading screen then the screen turns black and sits there. I have to hard reboot. I ahve used a repar CD and i have come across an error 0x800700b7, i have also recived this when i tried to work around this problem "identifier {9dea862c-5cdd-4e70-acc1-f32b344d4795}"

A:System will only start in Safe mode, Clean virus in safe mode

You can spend a lot of time trying to fix the boot problem and clean the virus from the computer, or you can nuke it and reinstall Windows. I wouldn't bother trying to fix it, personally - I'd back up what I could and then I'd install Windows again.

Why we don't ask you to run ComboFix from the onset

As stated by the author of ComboFix:

ComboFix is a very powerful tool which when improperly used may render your machine to a doorstop.

We first need to verify if there's any rootkits present and how they could affect our tools. DDS & GMER are preliminary scans. We use their logs to map our strategy for attack.

With these logs we can determine the infections present & decide whether to deploy ComboFix

My HP Dx6000 will only start in the Safe mode with networking start up option. I've tried:

Virus checks (doesn't appear to be a virus)
Windows Directory Services Restore Mode
System restore
MSCONFIG, unchecking everything
Last known good configuration
Tried CHKDSK.. it says system will check in 6 seconds but when the time runs out it never checks it.
Cannot get it to load "sfc scannow" either.

When I check out the device manager there are !! next to all of the microsoft adapters. Not sure if this is because I'm in Safe mode or if it's the problem why the normal mode isnt loading.

If I go Going into Microsoft adapter properties and try to roll back the driver the option is not clickable.
Any ideas ?

Hello everyone, to begin my process of removing Bullseye Network stuff i need to restart Xp in safe mode. Unfortunately i'm running off a laptop with a damaged and unreadable screen so i have it rigged up to a normal monitor. My question is, when i restart in safe mode will i still be able to make use of this secondary monitor?

Hi,
This is my first post so please bear with me if I don't make sense.

Problem: My kids knocked the powerboard and there was a power surge which cause the death of the montior. It won't turn on, tried new kettle cord and different computer still wouldn't work.

I plugged in a different monitor and you can see the computer going through the start up motions but then it says no display when you should have your user icons come up. Computer sounds like it's doing what it should be. Then I start it in safe mode and the monitor displays everything.

I'm using Windows Vista Professional. I have a seperate graphics card (I'll try and find all the specifics while you think of a solution )

Thanks

Trina

Whenever i go to into safe mode my display is all messed up. Everything is blurry and it seems like i am zoomed in a lot. I tried changing the display settings but even after i hit apply nothing happens and it just resets itself. When i try to run scans in safe mode i cant see all of the program and it is really annoying. Is this how safe mode is supposed to run b/c on my computer at home i do no have this problem

A:Safe mode display problem?

Safe mode is the Windows diagnostics mode. When you start the computer in Safe mode, only the specific components that are needed to run the operating system are loaded. Safe mode does not allow some functions, such as a connection to the Internet. (Windows 98) Safe mode also loads a standard video driver at a low resolution. Due to the low resolution, your programs and the Windows desktop may look different than usual and the desktop icons may have moved to different locations on the desktop.

This is normal

When im in safe mode, it boots and no problem seeing video. So what i need to know, is what settings to change so tv will display in normal mode.

thanks.

My display driver gave out - I get a black screen now after windows 10 loads (can see stuff on screen up to the window's loading screen).

So, in the past, this is easy to fix. Boot windows into Safe mode and uninstall the driver then reinstall the driver or the previous driver etc.

Now? Someone help, if I can't boot into safe mode how the heck to I resolve this? Who the heck designed Windows 10 and decided to make "safe mode" only accessible through menus once you start windows? What value do you think safe mode has if I don't have the option to load it BEFORE window's loads? Girr - rant over.

Thanks in advance for any help.

This is my first post. I bought a computer about a year ago for my kids at a computer show...running XP on a wireless network..it has been very stable..the kids were downloading some older games and when we started the computer , the screen would remain dark.By starting in safe mode,.I restored the system to an earlier time and fixed the problem...this was 3 months ago...now the problem has reoccurred and the fix of restoring to an earlier time does not work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sincere thanks,

PS I cannot start up in safe mode with networking..only in safe mode... if I start up normal mode, or last known good configuration, the screen remains black

Hi guys, been trying to resolve this stubborn bleep of ransomware from my brothers system, had this myself previously and removed with tools found elsewhere, but on this occasion, It seems somewhat more stubborn,

Have tried 2 Bootable usb removal tools without success:

Panda virus removal tool

Kapersky virus removal tool

and following on from Kapersky, a system restore was attempted, but failed, as said the restore point could not be loaded and the file has apparently been deleted

Cannot load to desktop to be able to use the DDS tool.

System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

Have been unable to backup any data, but if possible I need to preserve files/ photos already on the machine.

Any help or instructions, much appreciated.

Thanks

Using Windows 98, monitor worked fine but no longer displays anything - shows windows screen during booting up, but then blank (no signal).

Monitor works ok in safe mode, and control panel device manager shows no monitor installed!

How can I reinstall the monitor, as in "safe mode" you can not install new hardware, and it does not detect new hardware on reboot. With no display at all once windows has fully loaded, I can't access anything except in safe mode.

I would be grateful for any help with this

Hello Earlier today I set a some videos to convert and I when I returned the computer was off and the front LED's were flashing I restarted the computer and there was a loud whirring noise from the graphics card as if it had overheating After the restart the computer lasted around a minute before the display went off the fans and LED's were still on but there was no video output I restarted a number of times but the same thing happened I then tried putting another graphics card in the minute, No a display works safe in after mode. computer but the same thing happened I then booted the computer in Safe mode and everything works fine This then lead me to think that this was a software issue rather than a hardware issue I then put the hard drive in another computer and everything has been working fine so it must No display after a minute, works in safe mode. be a hardware issue The video seems to cut off after the same amount of time each boot is there some driver service that is causing something to fail I am a bit unsure what to do next Any help would be appreciated Thanks

A:No display after a minute, works in safe mode.

Hi,

Do check for GPU temps. Clean out any dust from it. For checking the temps, you can use MSI Afterburner.

Download the latest drivers for the card from AMD webiste. Remove the old drivers. Reboot in safe mode and run Driver sweeper (you have to download this before you uninstall the drivers). This small utility will remove leftovers of the old driver. Reboot to normal mode and then install the latest driver. Reboot again and check.

Keep us posted.

I am running an HP Pavilion laptop with an external LG display. The laptop's monitor no longer works. Everything was working fine, but I got the Windows Defender virus and need to boot in safe mode. I know how to get rid of the virus as long as I can get into safe mode. The external display is blank until it gets to the login screen, then it seems to realize it's needed and starts up. Someone had posted about this about 6 months ago but didn't appear to get an answer. Does anyone know how to boot in safe mode running Vista (sp2, 64 bit) with an external display? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

A:Safe Mode with an External Display in Vista

Try keys Fn+F4 together during boot-up.

If no-go, boot into Recovery using Vista DVD or HDD recovery partition - see if video works there.

What did you put on the laptop hard drive while it was connected to the desktop computer? Did you install Windows on it? If so, you're going to have problems now that the drive is in the laptop.

I installed IE8 on my laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium. The only way I can get IE8 to open is to run it in safe mode with add-ons disabled. If I run it in normal mode it just gets stuck at connecting. I did not have any problems running IE7.

A:IE8 will only work in safe mode

It simply means that there is some issue with the Add -ons installed on the computer .
open the internet explorer , and check the addons by follwing this path
Tools > internet options > Programs > Manage Adons .
and check the adons installed on your computer .

Hi Guys

I am trying to fix my partners laptop which has window vista - she bought it new in May 2010....Acer Aspire 5738G - 500Gb.

Apparently just yesterday she cannot log in via an admin user profile to access her desktop....it also has fingerprint system, so she used it as an alternative (fingerprint has been set up and confirmed before)to access her desktop but was denied too.

There is NO other user profile either...as guest or hidden admin.

So I went in to try the safe mode to find out what is wrong or to set up another user profile but the safe mode won't load either....any idea how to solve the problem?

Thank you for your time in advance

My old laptop picked up the dreaded antivirus soft today. Did some research and pretty much the beginning step in each tutorial was to restart the computer. Before windows opens up you are supposed to hit F8 until you can select the Safe Networking mode. Problem is that computer never goes into safe mode. It just keeps circeling back to the same sceen and if you select any one of the three safe modes it just keeps coming back and coming back. Is there a work around or another way to go about getting rid of this nasty malware?Moved from "Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs" forum as no log posted

A:Safe mode will not work

Let's try to take care of this in normal mode then we'll check safe mode afterward.First, Download rkill.com to your desktop.Double-click on the rkill.com in order to automatically attempt to stop any processes associated with Rogue programs. Please be patient while the program looks for various malware programs and ends them. When it has finished, the black window will automatically close and you can continue with the next step. If you get a message that rkill is an infection, do not be concerned. This message is just a fake warning given by these Rogue programs when it terminates programs that may potentially remove it. If you run into these infections warnings that close Rkill, a trick is to leave the warning on the screen and then run Rkill again. By not closing the warning, this typically will allow you to bypass the malware trying to protect itself so that rkill can terminate these Rogue Programs. So, please try running Rkill until malware is no longer running. You will then be able to proceed with the rest of the instructions.Check your Proxy settings in Internet Explorer to make sure malware did not alter them. If so, that can affect your ability to browse or download tools required for disinfection: * Open Internet Explorer > click Tools > Internet Options > Connections tab. * Click the LAN Settings... button and uncheck Use a proxy server for your LAN or change the settings to the proxy you normally use if you previously reconfigured it. * Remove any unknown addresses from the Address box. 80 is the default Port so it does not have to be changed. * Click Ok and then click Ok again. * Close Internet Explorer and restart the computer. * An example of how to do this with screenshots can be found in steps 3-7 under the section Automated Removal Instructions... in this guide..Check your Proxy settings in Firefox to make sure malware did not alter them: * Open Firefox, click Tools > Options > Advanced and click the Network Tab. * Under the Connection section click on the Settings... button. * Under Configure Proxies to Access the Internet, check No proxy. This is the default option if you don't use a proxy. * Click Ok and then click OK again. * Close Firefox and restart the computer. For other browsers, please refer to How to configure browser proxy settings.Scan for Spyware/AdwareThe process of cleaning your computer may require you to temporarily disable some security programs. If you are using SpyBot Search and Destroy, please refer to Note 2 at the bottom of this page. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free version and save it to your desktop.NOTE: Before saving MBAM please rename it to zztoy.exe....now save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. I have read multiple other posts that are similar to this issue but seem to be a different issue Here is what I have done thus far Reinstall windows Disable all startup items before and after the reinstall start in safe mode The only way that I am able to do anything with the mode! in Only work safe computer Only work in safe mode! Laptop is to have it in safe mode Otherwise it is so slow that I can't even click on the start menu When I press CTRL ALT DEL it will wait a moment and Only work in safe mode! then bring up the screen to select shutdown restart task manager and some other things or cancel If i select task manager it will bring it up and Only work in safe mode! I can click on performance and see no unusual memory or CPU usage however when I look at the CPU indicator light it is almost solid Another thing that I noticed is that the time is wrong This tells me that there is a BIOS issue Not sure if it would tell you the same thing I went over the BIOS and saw nothing that appeared to be out of place So my thinking is it could be a BIOS virus I have read that there are a few of those now that impact windows Essentially a rootkit for windows One last thing I wanted to add is that it works fine in safemode with networking That is actually how I am posting right now Again this is just where I have gotten on my own any thoughts on what it could be All help is appreciated

1. If you have the XP cd, you can try a repair install:

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
2. Or repair the registry:

When I boot with F8 and select Safe Mode the screen boots showing a full page of drivers in \Windows\Sytem 32 and does not go any further. From there, I can do nothing. The only way out is to turn computer off with switch. I want to get to Safe Mode.

Windows XP Pro, SP2, all relevant patches.

The computer is working A-OK on a day-to-day basis. However, I discovered something recently when I tried booting into safe mode: My computer crashes before it completes booting.

It seemingly gets to the login-screen. The available accounts shows up, but the disk keeps spinning and spinning and the mouse pointer is moving very sluggish. I never get as far as to select an account and enter a password, because out of the blue the computer suddenly reboots. This happens every time I try to boot in safe mode.

I find this a bit weird since I can boot in normal mode just fine. I have checked the event viewer for any clues, without finding any.

Any clues about how to continue debugging this problem would be appreciated. Also please say so if you need any more specific information about hardware, installed software, setup etc.

Sorry. Re-install Windows on top of it, or re-install it from scratch.

Mod does safe work? Why mode Edit Moved from XP to Why does safe mode work? the Am I Infected forum boopme I caught Why does safe mode work? the disk antivirus professional bug on - It was as described by Mr Abrams in his front cover article Fortunately I found this website chrome wouldn't work but IE did and Mr Abrams described how I could get into safe mode I was frustrated trying to figure it out and didn't have access to help files It worked out that I was able to do a successfull system restore to - while in safe mode With the computer freed up I was then able to do a scan I used microsoft essentials that located the offending files were in the recycle bin and the major one in a restorer file which I guess would be used if I wanted to Why does safe mode work? reverse the restore I was able to remove them completely then My questions are why did safe mode work And can safe mode be compromised by an attacker

A:Why does safe mode work?

Safe Mode runs a minimum amount of applications which makes it good platform for running scans as you have.  This isn't true with all security software.

You should be aware that there is no single software which will catch all of the possible types of infections.  For this reason I will request that this topic be moved to the Am I Infected forum where members and staff who are best qualified to address this can help you.

Hi,

I need help in repairing my laptop, I believe it was recently infected by a Virus / Malware. Below is a summary of what I'm experiencing for reference.

Operating System: Windows XP SP3
Laptop Model: MSI-GX620 Series

*Unable to enter Safe Mode. It basically shows a blue screen but will quickly reboot afterwards (Registry Keys are already missing).
*Unable to finish HijackThis scan, it runs but it will stop once it reaches the hosts section. Checked my host file and its a whopping 4MB file. Basically it is not able to generate any log file for review.
*Cannot enable my Antivirus (Avira Free).
*Unable to run Malware Bytes.
*Multiple Running Process: ipconfig.exe

I'm on a different computer now, I can download files from here and I can just transfer the required files to my laptop if its needed.

Best,
Brian

Hi I was on my computer earlier today with a game running when the computer froze for the span of several minutes then went to BSOD and gave a courtesy reboot As it was booting up there was some patterned graphic distortion pixels lit white when they should be black On subsequent startup screens this same type of distortion became worse though with other color pixels Once Windows finished its startup process the video input to both monitors was lost This was repeated on multiple startups I have tried starting up in except disabled on (BSOD) crash Computer in mode monitors Video both restart. safe by boot upon followed is safe mode which works fine as well as system restore which did not seem to accomplish anything This issue does not appear to be in any way related to the Computer crash (BSOD) followed by restart. I replaced the graphics card on a spare PC, but couldn't install it so changed back to the old one, but before doing so, disabled the monitor. Actually I went into Display Properties and then Monitor, Properties and under Device Usage at bottom, clicked on 'Do not use this device (disable)'

Question is, how do I re-enable it? BTW, I have it networked to other PC but can only get into shared docs

Anyway, now I get a screen view until Windows kicks in and then it goes totally blank (though I can hear Windows start via the speakers)

I've tried to start it in safe mode but it just stops with a list of driver names without going into safe mode (just seems to hang)

I tried using the last known good configuration but this didn't help either

Help please!

Thanks, Stephen

After attempting to start my Laptop in Safe Mode, it loaded drivers normally only to crash a few seconds later. A prompt message appears but is impossible to read because Windows immediately reboots upon showing the prompt.

Safe Mode with Networking loads normally.

Any ideas or advice?

The computer is an Acer 4743G running Windows 7 Home Basic x64.
