I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I use the system apps Mail, Calendar, and Groove Music. Since I first starting using Windows 10 many months ago, these apps keep closing without any indication of why. They close when during active sessions and on awakening they're usually closed. Groove Music will close at times while I'm listening to music. Why is this happening? I kept thinking that system updates would eventually resolve the issue, but they haven't, despite many updates.

I realize this is an old post Metro apps closing but it is a current issue for Metro apps closing me I'm writing on my Mac OSX which I haven't had issues with for years nothing major like this anyway We bought our kids Toshiba laptops for Christmas for homeschooling and they both have Windows It's only January and I've had several issues with them The latest is the same as described in the last post quot I have an administrator account and another account It is just a home Metro apps closing desktop My admin account has the issue of any Metro app minimizing after - seconds but the other account is able to access them quot My son's account can access the apps and play Minecraft I was able to access the apps on the Admin account until I installed Uniblue Registry Booster and ran it However I did the same to my daughters computer and it is working fine So I don't think Metro apps closing it is RB I have tried System Restore at different restore points and those didn't work Same problem I tried System Refresh That also didn't work Same problem I'm at a loss of what to do except get my back and save up for a MacBook But any help here would be VERY much appreciated BTW I've been through some computer classes but not anywhere near the level most of you are at I'll let you know if your responses are over my head though Thanks Oh I should also mention that when I go into the app menu most of the tile apps have an X in the bottom right corner When I go to the full menu almost all of them have the word quot error quot after the name including Settings I had to get into Settings another way

Mate, you mentioned Registry Booster! You've located the problem. As far as I can tell, 95% of people on this forum recommend never using any registry 'booster' (apart from ccleaner), and the number one reason is because it makes a system unstable, and the second is like it: it doesn't actually provide any tangible benefit.

I recommend a system Refresh or a system reset, and failing that, a complete reinstallation.

No defragmenter, reg editor, optimizer, etc. should ever be installed. Upgraded Windows OS's also have SAFE upgraded built-in tools to do the same things as the other guys' stuff (like optimize drives). See Optimize Performance for better speeds.

These are my recommendations, hope they are helpful to you! I really think the only fix for you would be in the tutorials I've suggested (System refresh, and how to optimize performance). Good luck in your quest for the solution!

Hello all I don't know if this is intended or not but my Metro apps will only completely close if I use alt f from within the app to close it If I pull the app down from the top with my mouse or Metro closing apps f4 only alt with I go to the switcher right click and click close the only thing that happens is that my Metro apps get removed from the app switcher Metro apps only closing with alt f4 and from the alt tab list Using the task manager I can see that they are still there and still using the same memory that they were before I tried to close them With alt f they disappear from the task manager and I get back the Metro apps only closing with alt f4 memory that they were using Additionally when I close them with pulling down or the switcher when I open them again from the start screen it is as if nothing had happened They still open into whatever state they were in and the splash screen with the app icon doesn't appear again like it would if the app had actually closed and been reopened This definitely seems wrong as all three options to close apps worked in Windows but in Windows only alt f works Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hello The Visitor,

It has changed a bit on how to close an app from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. In Windows 8.1, you will now need to wait until the app flips to show it's tile when you drag it down to close it.

Here are some more ways to close apps in Windows 8.1.

Hello there!

The only app I really have issues with is Music Info, great app, but buggy as a bug. It crashes kind of more often than I'd like.

As for other apps, like the Bing apps, I don't have issues with. Sometimes the News app doesn't launch, but that's sometimes.

Odd, and you're using a new PC with Windows 8 preinstalled?

Windows Vista 64 ultimate has done this to me as well. It's kinda of a feature than a problem. It opened up the last programs that were running before the shutdown. But I never had windows update reboot without me telling it to. That's a new one.

Hi

I work on my pc until late at night so have several programs open plus firefox with numerous tabs. I go to bed, the pc goes to sleep, but when i come down in the morning all my programs have closed. All I see is my desktop. No error messages (as pps have mentioned). The pc come out of sleep but its like its restarted itself at some point in the night.

Its rather annoying as I will have all the programs set up ready to start work again in the morning and wont have bookmarked all the browser tabs but everything has disappeared.

It doesnt happen every night.

Thanks.

A:All apps closing down overnight when pc is in sleep.

Do you have Hibernation enabled?

you may want to check the following setting in Power Options. Navigate to Power Options in Control Panel and click your power plan (usually Balanced or Power Saver). Click the Advanced power options link and look for this setting:

If the setting for On Battery is similar to mine here, change it to 0 (never). That should correct it for you.

I often switch back and forth between desktop and metro apps - for example, looking something up on Chrome in desktop mode while messaging someone on my skype metro app. After around 45 seconds in desktop mode, the metro app is closed when I return! This is very frustrating as you can probably guess. Anyone encountered this problem before? How did you solve it?

Hi, whenever I open a Metro app like Weather, even after closing it using the red cross in the upper right corner (feature added in 8.1 Update), the app will keep running in the background forcing me to end it with Task Manager. Is this normal?

A:Metro apps keep running in the background after closing

Hello Antares,

Yep, when you close an app with the red X on the upper right corner it only suspends the app to the background. When an app is supended, think of it as being placed in standby mode. The app will not use any system resources if suspended. A suspended app will still sit in memory (RAM) until that memory is needed by something else in Windows 8 and is then closed automatically to free the memory. While the app is sitting in memory, it will allow the app to be loaded faster the next time you open it since it's already in memory.

The tutorial below can help show you how to completely close an app though.

Hello I'm new here so if my question has been asked and/or answered I apologize.Since yesterday's 8.1 update 1 apps will no longer close on my non touch laptop by dragging them to the bottom of the screen and flipping them.I have noticed that when I go to the top of the screen to grab my cursor no longer becomes a hand but I can still drag the app to the bottom to flip it but then in immediately goes back to full screen and continues to run.Has this method of closing apps been removed for non touch devices in yesterday's update?

I open up my Live tiles screen on my 2nd monitor. When I open an app, say facebook. All is fine. When I drag from top of screen to bottom with my mouse to close the app, it goes to desktop. Is there a way for me to go back to the Live tiles screen?

Also, is it possible to have the live tiles screen visible all times on my 2nd monitor. I use Stardocks Start8 BTW if that helps

A:Closing Metro Apps takes me to desktop

Hello gizbug,

If you are using Windows 8.1 now, then:

You could uncheck the When I sign in or close apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start box from step 4 in OPTION TWO of the tutorial below to go to your Start screen.
Desktop or Start - When Sign in or Close apps in Windows 8
You could open the Start screen from the taskbar on your 2nd monitor to have it show until you either open the desktop there or drag and drop a desktop window there.

Hope this helps.

My 8.1 Update 1 HTPC now sends us to the desktop instead of the Start screen when we close an app. I know of the setting in taskbar properties to always go to the desktop instead of start when an app is closed. This option is unchecked. It looks like any non-touch Update 1 PC just ignores this setting. Anyone else suffering from the same problem? Any thoughts?

A:8.1 Update 1 - Closing Metro Apps Always Sends to Desktop

Crisis averted. You need to go to the taskbar properties and uncheck the box that says "Show Windows Apps on the Taskbar."

So lets say you have a program open, and its not pinned to the taskbar, calculator for example. You close it, and the animation for the programs icon on the taskbar disappears smoothly. Now, if I pin the calculator onto the taskbar and open it (or any current taskbar pinned item) and close it, the icon disappears with a sort of a chunky, or "blocky" animation leaving just the normal taskbar icon.

My question is, should this happen or is my Windows install lagging somehow? Can anyone recreate this and see if you get a similiar result? Simply, non taskbar pinned apps icons seem to close smoother, while ones that are pinned dont really have an animation and just close with maybe 3 different frames.

A:Quick Question About Closing Apps/ Taskbar (Could someone test this? )

Hello Keyes,

This would be the Animations in the taskbar visual effects setting. It's normal for there to be a slight delay with the animation. If it's to long or jagged, then you may have something else running that's using a lot of resources causing a temporary longer delay for this.

If you like, you could turn off (uncheck) this setting to have them be instant instead.

A:Windows apps opening and closing extremely slowly

Hi wacky60 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I do not see any signs of problems in the log. It is quite clean. having a program take 5 seconds to shut down is not uncommon. I have many programs which take that long or longer. It just depends on what resources the program has to release and what cleanup it has to do at the time of shutdown. There are a couple of housekeeping items we can fix so let's do that.Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...rch/search.htmlO2 - BHO: netMonior Class - {85810C93-C14C-11D5-BC4B-0050BA28E4FE} - blank (file missing)O3 - Toolbar: 1toolbar - {2184469F-67DA-49CB-BF3C-9CAB5974A280} - C:\PROGRA~1\1toolbar\1toolbar.dllNow close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):c:\program files\toolbar\ <--folderOk, reboot the machine and you should be good to go.Cheers.OT

Now eventually this goes away and the window does close, but like I said, it takes a ton of time trying to open and close these things up. If I do wait it out and I do get into my Internet Explorer or Mozilla, any links that I click or addresses that I type, it again, takes forever.

I've run a deep system scan with my Anti-Virus software and came up with nothing. I did a system restore to a point where the problem was not happening and, again, nothing.

Any suggestions?!

I had reset my mobile lumia 730, then i installed few apps newly. Most of apps working correctly with new features, but some of the apps have closing unexpectedly when i opened. I have surfed, but didn't get any solutions or cautions for that issues. I have enough internal memory in my mobile, i thought there won't be the issue cause. Can anyone help me?

Hello,
Can someone help me find out how I can stop the CD-RW from opening and closing all the time. I did check for virus' and the scan did not find any. I am running a Windows 2000 PRO OS. Im lost here.

Thanks
Mike

A:CD-RW opening and closing and it wont stop

Hi Mike and welcome to TSF.

This might not be the right place to ask this, but that is a strange problem. I know of some trojans that can do this. Does it happen if you are disconnected from the internet?

See if this finds anything:

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/ente...all_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. You may use Panda ActiveScan also at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

Try reinstalling the drivers for that cdrw and also check the cables (unplug and plug them back in).

Hi. My mums cd/cd-wr drive is going mad. It keep opening and closing continuesly. I have tried rebooting and shuting down but no luck. When the drive closes autoplay starts. The pc is slow and with autoplay flashing up its near to impossible to do anything. The first thing I want to do is disable autoplay and then we can fix the problem hopefully. So:

How do I disable autoplay?
How do I stop the drive from opening and closing continuesly?

A:Cd drive opening and closing - it wont stop

i would first try to remove the cd-rw from the device manager, start>control panel>system and reboot for windows to reload the driver for this hardware. if it is still the same it is most likely your hardware has internal problem/s.

Hi,

i have a word document that has I, Student Name. in it and this code
Code:
Private Sub Document_Close()
Dim rng As Range
Set rng = ThisDocument.Content
If rng.Find.Execute("Student Name") Then
rng.Text = InputBox("Enter Your Name")
If Response = "" Then Exit Sub
End If
ThisDocument.Save
End Sub

and when i run the code it looks for Student Name and if its there it asks for me to insert my name
but it allows for you to press cancel and just exit with out entering a name
how can i make it so you cant hit cancel?
and when you do it just keeps coming up with the same input box?

A:Stop word from closing when hit cancel in input box

You cannot do it under a Sub Document_Close because it is already closing.

You will have to think of another option.

I have autoplay completely disabled.
I realize that Windows Explorer (WE) will open if a new dvd, usb drive, etc is connected/inserted.

But 'I open' all of the WE windows I use but "Win7 64 will close that WE window if the thing is removed, even when it did NOT create/open it" !!

Anyone know how to disable this 'automatic' CLOSING of WE by Win 7??

Thanks for any help!! , this is a pain (and infinitely stupid on Win7's part) !!

I think this is an Office issue using Win bit I only notice it in Word and Powerpoint If I open a Word file for example by double clicking in Explorer when I have other Word files already open when I x-out to close the Word file in front - it brings leaves one of the other Word files to the front rather than Explorer which should be right quot behind quot it because I just opened the file from there This is maddening and wastes so much of my time as I frequently browse and open many files quickly in Explorer close them and then always have to tab back to Office to How front files closing? after programs bringing other stop Explorer when it should be right How stop Office programs bringing other files to front after closing? in front It does not happen with many PDF files open for example I hope that How stop Office programs bringing other files to front after closing? is clear This is an issue with how the files are quot layered quot i have searched and searched the web and found no one else complaining about this I know XP didn't do this Please help me I swear I am not making this up Word Tom

A:How stop Office programs bringing other files to front after closing?

I love how you ended it: "Word".

I am experiencing the same thing. I happen to have Word 2003 and yep, it's doing the same thing. I didn't know that it didn't do this in XP and that it does this in 7 because I've never done anything to make me notice. However, I can see how stupid this is. It's inconsistent. It's almost as if Windows 7 is programmed to do this with Microsoft Office, almost like it's saying, "I see that you have other files open in Word. Therefore, when you close this one I'll shift the focus to the last document you looked at instead of shifting focus back to me". It's like, "Uh, wait a minute. That's inconsistent, Windows. What's wrong with you?"

I'm beginning to wonder if there's something in the Registry that is making it behave this way.

I updated to Windows 10 a little bit ago on an older Dell Inspiron laptop. I regularly use the laptop for picture editing. Since updating about every 30 seconds the desktop and task bar will go black, then reload. It shuts down any files I have open, which is super annoying when I'm trying to move pictures from my camera card to my external hard drive. And, actually, when I try to move pictures, as of today it's shutting down almost immediately.
A techy friend thought it was a virus and had me download MalwareBytes. (We used Bullguard for antivirus protection). Malwarebytes found some malicious files, and I deleted all of them. But, the problem is continuing. What do I do next? I am so frustrated by this problem.
I did a quick search of the forum for this question and didn't see it on another thread.

Hi,

I have an XP ThinkPad T500 that's been having some problems.
After a while of sitting idle, any open apps will stop responding  and no new apps can be opened.
For a while, Alt-Tab and other such OS UI still work, until a complete hang which requires a cold boot.
Some apps can cause the hang faster than others.

Interestingly, if I work on the computer continuously the problem arises much later than after some idle time.
I suspect some problem with the HDD and some OS files.

Please advise,
Thanks,
Adi

A:Internet Apps Stop Working

This problem is happening every few hours. Are there any suggestions as to how I can investigate further?

Additional info, apparently other internet apps can continue working during this state. Example:

I was playing On-Line Poker via a locally executed application and experienced no difficulties. When I quit out of the application I discovered that both my Internet Browsers, again, did not function (they startup, but they are unable to resolve any sites).

A little more info:
Internet explorer seems to attempt to load a requested page but then responds that the page is cannot be resolved (I'll write update what the exact message is when this happens again). But Mozilla Firefox does not seems to even make an attempt to load the page. You make a request and it just returns an IMMEDIATE blank page.

Thank you in advance for any assistance!

There are a number of applications I'd just as soon didn't start
when I startup the computer.

How do I stop them from loading or starting automatically on startup?

They're not pinned to the start menu.

I don't want to delete them, just not have them start automatically
when I start up.

Thanks!

Oh - XP Home

A:How do you stop apps from auto starting on startup?

Run msconfig and check its startup tab for applications.

Windows 10 starts apps automatically in the background, so when you start the apps, they will launch faster.
But I don't need that.

The background apps settings in the Settings app don't change anything.

Is there another workaround for that?

Look at the Photos app, it uses a ridiculous amount of RAM.

I have this weird issues where my games and videos tiles have just "blanked out" if you will, (see screenshot attached).. when i try to click the link it takes me to the store yet when i go to watch a video if i right click on the designated file and open with the metro video app it does work until i go back to the start menu and try to click the video app yet again and it takes me to the store over and over..

what can I do to fix this without losing any of my files?

A:Metro apps stop working, tiles black out!

If you can, right click on the app and on the bottom, click on uninstall and do it for both of them.

Go back to the Store, right click on the screen, you'll see an option My Apps. Just re-install those 2.

In researching another problem, I discovered that on one computer (haven't checked others) we have several apps installed.

Farmville 2
Candy Crush Soda
Asphalt 8
Netflix
Pandora
etc

All were installed on Aug 13.

I use IOBit Uninstaller and do not have them listed as installed. When reviewing Apps & Features under Settings > System, I see that these are installed on that Aug 13. Yet, the last Windows Update was August 10. Not good.

I realize now that they are part of the Play and Explore section of Windows Metro apps. Ugh!

I can uninstall each of them one by one by right clicking on them and selecting uninstall - on all but one...

"XBOX - Age of Empires" - it does NOT have an uninstall option.

Any other options for uninstalling it?

How does one stop this auto loading of MS Metro apps in Win 10? Need to know for both standard and Pro Win 10, if different.

In Win7 (Home Edition), I used to login to admin account and start an application (say Magicjack VOIP for instance). As long as the admin account was signed in Magicjack worked no matter which user logged in. When I upgraded to Win8 Pro, Magicjack only works when my account (admin) is active. When other users log in and my account is signed in but inactive, Magicjack stops working.

Can anyone help me to set Win8 up such that my applications will work as long as I am signed in and other users log in?

Help!!!

Hello friends,
I have installed windows 8 consumer version.I have cleanly installed avast internet security 7(windows 8 compatible). But after installing it,avast cannot update(it says it cannot connect to server). Also network apps like Mozilla, chrome, even internet explorer cannot find any page.(as if no internet connection is there;although I have connected to internet).

i have disabled windows defender and windows firewall though. But nothing works.
Strange thing is that after uninstalling avast all apps run normally as usual.
I have tried even Norton internet security(windows 8 compatible). The problem is exactly the same as that of avast.
I WILL BE THANKFUL FOR ANY HELP.

A:Network apps stop working after installing AVAST in windows 8 CP

Usually just resetting winsock and TCP/IP stack will fix this sort of problem. Lower left corner of screen, right click and choose, Command Prompt Admin

Type the following commands into an elevated command prompt one at a time then hit enter after each one then reboot.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)
netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

Hi I have posted this in other forums in an attempt to get to a wide audience Spooler Office restarted responding until stop is Print apps so I apologise if you have seen it before and cannot help I have stuck a strange print spooler problem that I would like to get some direction on I have read the solutions presented but I'm not sure how relevant they are I am also still gathering info but need some pointers on exactly what would be useful We have computers in an office of various types with windows home premium or windows all exhibiting the same symptoms Approximately weeks ago the all suddenly started having problems with the print spooler If the computers are restarted they will work for a while and then the office apps word excel Office apps stop responding until Print Spooler is restarted access and outlook will stop responding The will Office apps stop responding until Print Spooler is restarted either not load normally word or will stop when selecting the print function Other spooler-related issues such as viewing the print queues also do not load Stopping the pint spooler immediately fixes the issue but after the spooler is restarted the problem will eventually reoccur Rebooting the computer also fixes the issue temporarily There are several different printer models and types in the environment including a couple of network-connected and also directly-connected USB printers I am told that there have been no new applications nor software loaded nor were any updates applied around the time that the problem first occurred although Microsoft patches are applied automatically so they may not have noticed one The network in the office is very simple with an Internet cable router switch wireless access point Two of the computers are on Ethernet with others being connected via wireless standard WiFi There is no file or print server in the environment and all computers print directly to the printers The only reason for the network connectivity is for Internet access and printing to the network-connected printers The stranger part of this is that if the laptop computers are away from the environment they normally work correctly and do not exhibit the problem It is only in the office environment that this occurs I am tempted to blame one of the printer drivers and so will continue my investigation around this for the moment However no new printers have been introduced into the office and I am told no drivers have been updated or changed I have asked them to create a log of what is happening when the problem occurs but haven't reviewed this yet Does anybody have any other ideas on where to start on this one

I recently got laptop with windows 8. I notice that whenever I am trying to install a larger app from the Windows store, I cant browse the internet or use apps that require a connection. Even people on the same wifi network have the same problem, even if it is just me downloading the app. Is windows configured to use ALL of the bandwidth in order to install an app? Is there a setting where I can make it only use like half? I don't mind if it takes a little longer to install.
Thanks

A:Why does our internet connection stop working when downloading apps in Windows 8?

What is your wifi download speed.? And be aware there is a difference between the download speed given by your provider (mostly a max speed) and the actual speed you get ("including" distances to server, interferes etc)
If this is "low" then probably the downloading uses the total bandwidth.
If you open the task manager during the download you can see what the actual download speed is or use a app to check your download speed.

I'm not sure what started to cause this My computer was working perfectly fine up until this week HP dv Pavillion laptop gb with free Windows with latest updates Gb RAM The symptom is this All of the sudden applications start throwing the quot not responding quot state I check my hard drive light and see it's on non-stop no flicker When I listen to the laptop I hear the hard drive in a quot loop quot of click sounds A bunch of rapid clicks for about seconds that ends in a quot double-click quot sound a pause then repeats It stop responding hard intensely busy, Sporadic apps drive just keeps going If I Sporadic hard drive intensely busy, apps stop responding close down Outlook and a bunch of other applications and wait the pattern eventually stops and my laptop is functioning normally again I've run a disk defragmenter program and overall my drive showed to be in good shape I also ran a disk surface detector and didn't find anything wrong no bad Sporadic hard drive intensely busy, apps stop responding sectors At first I thought Outlook might have been the culprit but I've seen it trigger when something else Sporadic hard drive intensely busy, apps stop responding is running like Event Viewer So my question is is my laptop suffering from a quot partial quot hardware issue Or is it a software problem I managed to get the task manager running when the busy hard drive issue popped up to see what program was taxing the CPU and nothing I couldn't get the Resource Monitor open because it was just too damned busy My Event Viewer had a clutter of messages but the only thing I saw peculiar were strings of about quot Bonjour Service quot errors I cleared everything out to start fresh and once this happens again I'll note the time and see if there are any event entries that coincide that might shed some light Meanwhile any ideas

Open a Resource Monitor and switch to Disk tab and keep it open. Sort by Reads and then Writes when this happens next. See if you can find the culprit.

A:BSOD when resizing/closing World of Warcraft, also when closing Chrome

Hi Haxiel.

The zip you uploaded does not contain any crash dump.

Follow it: Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD
Go to Option Two, Point 2. Download the .reg file and merge it in registry by double clicking it.

Now wait for another BSOD. When it occurred, search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. See if the crash dump is recorded or not (hopefully it will be recorded).Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

Dont run any disc cleanup tool before you upload another zip.

thank you. I ended up getting rid of PC Tools Internet Security and switching to AVG Basic Free. I think most of the major problems went away.
Yahoo has stayed up, Outlook has stayed up, browser seems to work quickly, facebook didn't have floating text and pictures anymore, was able to do some posting, sent some large emails. But, and not exactly sure, IE has frozen up, but not as often. The dds program you had me run this morning froze and I had to do a hard shut off, task mgr didn't respond and the weirdest thing of all, the clock stopped. Can't say I have ever seen that. So I am not sure what exactly is going on, if it really is malware or some setting is messed up. I wasn't able to run video on a site last night. Major improvement since I got rid of PC tools, but not quite right. Sorry, nontechie.

Obvious to anyone. You have three malware apps running live at the same time. You have Avast, Kaspersky, and AVG.

You need to remove them all and install Microsoft Security Essentials AT LEAST TO TEST.

If you continue to crash even after removing them upload the DMP file as you have old drivers that need updating.

I have windows xp and everytime i boot up and look in the windows task manager under the performance tab, my cpu is always runing at 100%. NO matter what. It makes my computer run very slow. Any ideas would be a great help.

A:cpu always runing at 100%

check the system tray (all the icons at the bottom right corner of the screen). if theres a lot of programs there and u dont have a lot of ram then that may be why. for some reason, winamp makes my cpu usage go up to 90%. all this can depend on what type of computer u have aswell.

I have an nec 16 x dvd which used to run at 16x but for some reason only runs at 2x. I can not say what made the change. This occurs under XP but not under Kubuntu. Therefore I know it is not a defective dvd drive. I have always used Mitsu or TY media. What should I check out to troubleshoot.

A:Programs runing in XP

Yes xp has a lot of programs the average user will never need . REad the attachment below about some of the tasks running and maybe you can stop sofe if not most. To gain access to the below programs usestart ,control panel ,administrative tools and services.

XP Services trimming
Alerter Notifies selected users and computers of administrative alerts. This is only useful if you're on a large network with many users...which most of us are not, at least not at home.
Application Layer Gateway Service Provides support for 3rd party protocol plug-ins for Internet Connection Sharing and the Internet. This actually provides services for the XP firewall. ONLY DISABLE THIS IF YOU ARE NOT RUNNING THE XP FIREWALL.
Application Management Provides software installation services such as Assign, Publish, and Remove. This should be set to manual. If you're having problems uninstalling/modifying a program's installation, reenable this service.
Background Intelligent Transfer Service Used to transfer asynchronous data via http1.1 servers. What this is ACTUALLY used for is to allow you to transfer data from WindowsUpdate...and to continue it even after a reboot (if the prior transfer wasn't complete). This is pointless, so disable it.
ClipBook Support clipbook viewer, which allows pages to be seen by remote clipbooks. This is some sort of network copy/paste utility. Once more, totally useless.
COM+ System Application This allows COM+ applications to function. However, there are decidely few of these, and chances are you don't need it. Check "c:\program files\com+ applications" to see if you have any apps. If not, disable it. Note that the event viewer will complain.
Computer Browser Maintains an up-to-date list of computers on your network and supplies the list to programs that request it. This is meant primarily for networks, so if you're not on one, disable. If you are on a network...well...everything networking related will still work with this turned off. Honestly, I see no reason to run it at all, unless you have a really large network. In that case, leave it enabled on one computer, and disable it on the rest.
Distributed Link Tracking Client Sends notification of files moving between NTFS volumes in a network domain. If you're not in a domain, disable this. If you are, but don't run NTFS, disable this.
Distributed Transaction Coordinator Coordinates transactions that are distributed across two or more databases, message queues, file systems, or other transaction protected resource managers. Very long way of saying multiple connections to different places. This won't happen in a home user environment, so disable it.
Error Reporting Service This service will report error messages and such back to Microsoft. Personally, I don't want them knowing any more about me than they already do. I would definetely recommend disabling this.
Fast User Switching Compatibility Unless you use fast user switching, this service is pointless. Most people run XP with only one user, for instance. Disable it.
Help and Support This service is required to access Microsoft online help documents. Since I (and probably you) never use this, it's pointless. Disable.
IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service This service allows the XP burn-cd feature. By setting this to manual, this service will automatically load and UNLOAD itself when needed. If you still have problems burning CD's, enable it. No burner at all, disable it.
Indexing Service This service allows the computer to index the contents of drives for speedier searches. However, it's an incredible resource hog and tends to start and very inopportune times. To get rid of this, go to the control panel, add/remove programs, the windows setup tab, and remove it from there.
Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) This is basically for if you're using ICS to share out your connection to multiple comput... Read more

I could really use some help.

A:My CPU is runing at 0% will spike

Spike how high. Depending on what programs are running at start-up, in the background, an occasional fluctuation is not abnormal.

Bring up task manager and watch under the CPU column. You may be able to spot the culprit.

I can't get warcraft 2 to work with windows xp. It acts like it's starting goes to a black screen where it does all the loading and run time stuff, then it just goes back to windows without an error message or anything. Now it was made for win 95 and most my other games work fine, but maybe I just need a patch for warcraft 2 tides of darkness, but I have no idea where to find one.

A:warcraft 2 runing on win xp

for a patch, go to http://www.battle.net/files.shtml, if you don't have Battle.Net edition, then you don't need a patch.

You can try running it in compatability mode--go to te Warcraft directory, and right-click each EXE file, hit properties, then compatability, and check compatability mode for Windows 95.

A:help PC fans runing 100%

Well, I don't know if you reset jumper pins.  That's beyond my knowledge.  But what if the problem is simpler?  Here's what fixed my machine so the fans stopped running like that, even when the machine was not on, but just plugged in:

1.  Unplug machine.
2.  PUSH AND HOLD the power button in for 30 seconds. Then let go.
3.  Plug in machine, see if the fans are still running high.  They should stop or be 'normal'.
4.  Turn on machine, see if the fans still behave normally.

You can google on the '30 seconds' and 'power button' to see variants of this same issue, maybe someone also covered jumper pins?

Boot the Win7 DVD, press Shift F10 to open a Command line, use DISKPART to mark Win7 partition Active: Partition - Mark as Active

Next boot back into DVD Repair console, click through to Recovery Tools list to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots until Win7 starts.

Use Disk Mgmt to make your partitions, or free Partition Wizard bootable CD for what Disk Mgmt cannot do.

A:Outlook 2000 not runing

Based on everything I can find about "belt.exe," it's a trojan. TrojanScan is a free online scanner that should be able to get rid of it.

I suggest you download, install, immediately update and then run Spybot and/or AdAware. Read the help files to familiarize yourself with how they work. I recommend you use them both since each tends to find things the other misses. Let them clean up any spyware found.

Then, to be doubly sure, download and run CWShredder (link to the download is near the bottom of the page).

Then run Hijack This! again and post the new log backhere.

I have a new compter and have way too many programs runing at startup. How can I tell what I don't need so that I can get rid of them.
I'm using IE for browser and have XP for OS. When I go to startup tab it shows a list of startup selections.
#1 normal startup
#2 diagnostic startup
#3 selective startup with a list of selections below.

Normal startup or #1 is checked and that is what is runing now.

I haven't tried any of the selections for fear of causing a problem.
Any one have a suggestin as to what I should do here?

A:Startup programs runing

Just use the tab lebelled Startup ,do not change any of the others.

Do not uncheck things like Antivirus, firewall etc.
Items like Quicktime, real player updater etc can be unchecked. Research each *.exe before disabling.

Try Mike Lin's 'Startup Control Panel'
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
You can disable startup entries and delete them (once it's safe to do so).

After that, you may find there are some services you can disable (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services). Once again, research each item before disabling

A:virus runing in backround(plz help)

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Apologies for the long delay in response. We have a large number of HijackThis logs to handle and it's taking us longer to catch up. If you haven't received help elsewhere already and still require assistance please follow the instructions below.

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt

A:Computer runing very Slow

There are several possible reasons for a computer slowing down. One is spyware and viruses but that isn't the only possible thing. I don't see anything wrong with your log. That doesn't mean there isn't something bad on your computer, but if there is, it doesn't seem to be showing up on your log. Most of what you have in this log is related to the "Download studio" thing.

I would disable it in MSCONFIG if you aren't using it all the time. It has to be a resource-hog with so much stuff loaded and running.

To open MSCONFIG, click "Start" "Run", and then type in MSCONFIG, and then when the MSCONFIG window opens up, you'll see several tabs across the top. The one on the right is "Startup", click that.

Now you see a bunch of programs that are loaded every time your computer boots up. Everything in there that is has a checkmark to the left of it is being loaded up into memory every time you boot your computer up. Probably a good lot of these you don't need running all the time, so to make it so they don't just automatically start up each time you boot up, uncheck the box to the left of them (make sure you leave checked the things you DO need running (like your Antivirus (and anything associated with it (you can usu tell by looking at the very right end of the path what program each one is associated with, if it isn't obvious just by looking at the name of the entry)).

After you uncheck all the ones you don't need, click on "Apply" near the bottom of the window, and then "OK", and it will prompt you to "restart" your computer. Click Restart and it will reboot and you should have at least a little more memory and thus a slightly faster computer.

I would first download the following programs, after installing them, get their updates (from the internet by clicking on "search for updates" (or whatever that particular program's button says) - do this while online, and then download the updates, they'll install automatically, and then do a compete scan of your computer and fix anything that they find:

AdAware SE http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
SpyBot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

Next I would go and do an online virus scan to get a "second opinion" about the state of your computer (as far as whether you have viruses or not) - here are a couple of free sites you can have one done by visiting and clicking on the choices to scan and clean:

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/

Also go and download SpywareBlaster from the following site:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

After installing it and while online click on "check for updates" and then after it's all updated have it select all of the bad things it has on its list and then click under both "Internet Explorer" and "Restricted Sites" to enable protection against ActiveX and other nasties, and click "Protect against checked items" (you should have them all checked (you can check them all by clicking in the check box above that window)

Make sure it says that protection is enabled for Internet Explorer and for Restricted Sites and that "0 items have protection disabled"

Another thing you can do to speed up your computer is go through and get rid of (uninstall) all the programs you aren't using and don't use, and get rid of files and folders that you don't use as well. I'm not sure what the administrative tools to do all of these are in XP (I mostly use Win98 @ the moment), but I know there are a bunch - something like "cleanup", "scandisk", "defrag" (I don't know if all of those are available in XP, but I know it has some such tools, you'll hafta look around)

computer was running kind of slow so i went to a website where they scan your computer for free and find all these probs then fix 20 for free. well it said my computer had 130ish problems. i deleted the temp file from the control panel. now every ad aware check finds over 40 errors. up to 120ish!). before there were only 1 or 2 every week. and my computer is really slow. how can i find the hidden problem or go back to how comp was before i did that? oh- almost forgot- the computer freezes up a lot now too.maybe from being so slow?

Hi.

Got an article here.

Slow computer?

Do you have ample amount of RAM? Just of the few things to consider.

Maybe this one would help before you consider posting in Hijackthis Log help section.

Please do the following:

Download & immediately run - L2MFix.exe
Click "Install" to extract the contents to a newly created folder.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot. From the l2mfix folder, double click l2mfix.bat
Select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter ONCE.
Do NOT depress any keys on your keyboard until the tool request you to "press any key to reboot"

On the reboot notepad will open with a log. Copy/paste the contents of that log back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

If after the reboot the log does not open double click on it in the l2mfix folder to locate log.txt.

If you receive an error - \system32\Autoexec.nt is not suitable for running MS-Dos applications, you will need to visit this website to download additional files.
