I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm running Windows 7 x64, and I can't see any video file thumbnails (ex: .avi, .flv, etc) of the files in my My Videos folder. All video clips work in VLC and WMC.

Addendum: I've tried to solve this problem by downloading the K-Lite Codec for x32 and x64 (as suggested to a user in a different thread), but as seen below, this solution only worked for the .mkv and .wmv files.

Can anyone offer up another solution?

I have just built a new computer using Windows Pro bit however I've noticed when I open Windows explorer out of times it will continuously search for drives when opening up explorer and not show any drives that are installed I've tried reformatting using different hard drives but the problem persists no matter what I do I've reinstalled Windows with only a single drive plugged in tried different SATA ports but this folders/file icons/thumbnails showing Drives not showing, not problem keeps Drives not showing, folders/file icons/thumbnails not showing coming back The only thing I can think of is that the Windows install disk is corrupted and not installing properly I've also noticed that once it starts searching like this the icons wont display in any folder although the file names will Likewise when trying to sort files Drives not showing, folders/file icons/thumbnails not showing by date type etc they will not sort When this happens I can easily type in Drives not showing, folders/file icons/thumbnails not showing C to get to the drive without problem to access the drive but above problems with icons not showing sorting etc still is a problem Has anyone had this problem Know of a way to fix this I'm not looking forward to having to reformat again as I don't have the time to sit through and reinstall everything again after

As the title says. It happened all of a sudden.

I've tried going into folder options and unticking and ticking.
I've ran disk clean up
I've ran sfc /scannow
I've installed some codecs

I did find something about editing the registry but when I was following the instructions I couldn't find the specified area mentioned in the article. So I haven't actually change anything in my registry yet.

A:Video thumbnails not showing!?

Hello Sommarblond,

Double check in Default Programs to make sure that Windows Media Player is set as the default program with all of it's associations set to it as well. One or more of the associations may not be set for WMP.

What file extension type is the for?

Hope this helps,

Can anyone please give me advice on how to view my video files as thumbnails in XP explorer. I could always do so but now i can only see pictures as thumbnails in explorer but not any of my movie files like mpeg, wmv, avi, etc
Relevancy 76.97%

I am running Vista Home ... when in the folder I have my videos in I can see my .avi movies from my old HP dig cam but can not view the thumbnail of the newer .mov videos from my Kodak dig cam. This bugs me. I can play them in quicktime but would love to be able to see the thumbnail preview so sorting them would be a lot faster.

I've googled this and tried several things. Nothing has worked as of yet. Maybe I am not doing something right. I download and installed VLC and 3ivx. I do not want to change any .reg afraid I might mess something up. This machine is only 1 week old.

Someone please help me I don't know what else to do or where else to look.

A:Can't view .mov file thumbnails

As you may know, Windows Vista doesn't natively support mov files. VLC can play them, but its decoders are built-in and completely independent of Windows. 3ivx only decodes mov files (and mp4 files and 3gp files) encoded in MPEG-4 (it won't decode mov files in any other codec); not sure about its previewing capabilities.
What you would need is a filter (sometimes called splitter) to enable Windows (and Windows Media Player and Explorer etc.) to sparse mov files. The two most popular ones are Haali's and Gabest's filters. They're not perfect (have a few bugs - notably for mp4 and 3gp files) because they're third-party software, but they work for most files.
I believe Haali's filter is bundled with QuickTime Alternative, which you can get here:
During installation it will propose to uninstall QuickTime, but that's not necessary. You can have QuickTime and QuickTime Alternative work side by side just fine.
As for Gabest's filter it's built-in Media Player Classic (also installed with QuickTime Alternative). I think you could download the filter alone somewhere in here
but I'm not sure how to install it and register it with Windows.

Is this option completely eliminated or is there something I can do to retrieve this feature for Windows 7?

Some of the thumbnails aren't showing up windows explorer even though they are the same file type. There will be 12 episodes of a show in .AVI or .MKV, and only 9 will have thumbnails, the other 3 don't. I have the Haali Media Splitter on to show thumbnails and I installed the Windows Service Pack to to it too (not sure which one is actually working, if I had to guess I'd say it's Haali).

To enable the thumbnails on Haali Media Splitter I click it, the went: options → explorer integration → show thumbnails (yes) → thumbnails offset (10000)

Not sure what is wrong...can anyone help?

And this is a problem with pretty much all the file types, some thumbnails showing and some not when they're in the same folder and I got them from the same source (all the files in a folder are either AVI or MKV, but the problem happens with both)

I know there are some threads about this. but I couldn't solve my problem using those. so I decided to make a new thread instead of bumping the old ones.
Well, Here is my problem:
recently I installed a fresh copy of windows 8 on my PC. it was nothing wrong with it till I installed Kaspersky Endpoint Security 10 (v. & did a reboot.
Now non of my files including picture, audio & video files show thumbnails or even tags (ex mp3 files).
I've tried the solutions stated about turning thumbnails on & off with no luck. in my folder options the option "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is UNCHECKED.

Has anybody faced the problem?? Is the issue from Kaspersky?? Are there any workarounds??

I truly Appreciate any help.

PS. I also have some difficulties pinning folders to windows explorer taskbar icon since then.

This is the kind of thing that makes Windows a pain.

I'm in a folder, where I know a file should be, yet I don't see it.
I refresh, by going back and forth in diff. folders and yet when I go back to the original I still don't see it.

I do a search and it shows me that it is in fact where I thought it should be.
Yet when I go there, it doesn't appear in the list.....

Back and forth several times........

Finally, by luck, I click on the "name" button at the top of folder view, then apparently it refreshes and appears.

Any ideas on why this is ? or what happened, and how to fix or resolve this ?

A:Folder view , file not showing ??

Try this, open the folder & right mouse on any blank space in the folder (Not on an item) & then set the viewing mode as per the picture.

Once you have done it, play with the settings until they suit your needs after that, OK?

Hey all Another minor non-life-threatening irritation Running Windows XP Home Edition on a defaults Can't "My randomly; XP thumbnails view: Documents" Thumbnails picks to reset PC quot Service Pack Build quot When i browse my folders on Thumbnails view Windows seems to assign random pictures from throughout my hard drive to act as the thumbnail for some folders Actually it's not totally random when Thumbnails view: XP picks thumbnails randomly; Can't reset "My Documents" to defaults i assign a picture to act as the thumbnail for one folder it works fine but then a week or so later i will find that windows has used that picture as the thumbnail for some other completely unrelated folder elsewhere on the hard drive I can easily fix this by right-clicking on the folder and going to Properties - gt Customize tab - gt Choose Picture Restore Default Often that doesn't work The properties screen will tell me that the default has been restored for example but when i actually look at the folder again it hasn't actually changed anything But then that problem can be solved by going to Properties - gt Customize tab - gt Change Icon and re-selecting the icon that was already supposedly being used by that folder That usually solves the problem This is mildly annoying and if anyone knows a permanent fix i'd appreciate it But the main problem I wanted help for was for the quot My Documents quot folders The fix given above will not work for quot My Documents quot quot My Music quot quot My Pictures quot quot My Videos quot because the properties screens for those four folders do not have a quot Customize quot tab so it seems i'm stuck with whatever picture XP has randomly decided to assign to those folders at least until it randomly decides to assign a different picture to them It's nothing to lose sleep over but it'd be nice to be able to have more control over the thumbnail images just for purely aesthetic purposes after all that's the whole reason for having Thumbnails view as an option Does anyone have a fix for this

A:Thumbnails view: XP picks thumbnails randomly; Can't reset "My Documents" to defaults

Recently I downloaded a file converter which, after installation, associated all my video files with itself. Previous to downloading this programme my .avi, .mkv files etc were all displayed simply as an icon, yet now they are all displayed as a thumbnail picture. The only solution I have found for reverting my video files back to being displayed simply as an icon is via Folder Options, 'Always show icons, never thumbnails'. However, selecting this option also disables the thumbnail preview for my .jpeg and other image files. Is there any way to disable my video files being displayed with a thumbnail whilst keeping the thumbnail preview for images? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's for a shared folder. I can connect with it as can my wife. Inside the folder are subfolders, each with video files and images. Each subfolder has a single image set to it via the proper Properties>Customize>Folder Pictures-Choose File method.

If I access the folder, the subfolders show the single image as the thumbnail as intended. However, when my wife accesses it, its the usual thumbnail collage of items within the subfolder. We've tried setting the images in the same manner from her account, however nothing happens. All we're trying to do is set the subfolders up so that when she opens the folder, each subfolder thumbnail has a specified image for it. Again, it works as it should for me, but not for my wife.

I suspect some permissions issue, however I've checked every possible setting. Public access, permissions, account type level, there's no apparent reason why this should be happening.

Little help?

I am running WinXP Pro and when I use any image editor to open pics from "My Pictures" directory, I keep getting a "thumbnail" view, when I would rather have a "Details" view.

In windows explorer, the directory (all directories) is showing up as "Details", which I have set up as the default view in the folder options, but this problem only occurs when I choose "Open" from the "File" menu.

It is no big deal, I can switch to "Detail" view, but I would like to have that there by default, if at all possible. Maybe working with group policies can help, but I don't know where to go in the administrative templates.

A:I don't want to view thumbnails

Windows XP has folders designed for specific files for better (more like hinder) use. For example C:\My Music is designed to show Artist, Track Number etc (a bit like the list in WMP), and C:\My Pictures has the thumbnail views to see the pictures like in an album.

Since My Pictures is a default Windows XP folder I don't know if you can change the default, but I know it can be done with folders you create. There is an option in Folder options to change it to normal view. I'm not at home right now so I cannot check myself but I think the option might be something like Picture Tasks

Hey guys after upgrading from XP to Win I've probably already spent hours removing most of the little bits and unnecessary pieces of UI changes they implemented I'm pretty much done but there's one thing left See the problem is with the view and thumbnail functionality XP would only display preview thumbnails of pictures if as->thumbnails? view How have of XP the old to behavior you rightclicked in a folder and selected View- gt Thumbnails In Win I How to have the old XP behavior of view as->thumbnails? like to use View- gt Big symbols because I find the Medium symbols to be kinda small but then of course Windows automatically starts creating thumbnails of pictures and previews of folder contents Now I know I can prevent that if I just switch to a smaller icon size or disable it in Folder- gt View- gt Options- gt View Tab- gt check quot Always show icons instead of thumbnails quot But this change seems to be global it prevents any thumbnail functionality anywhere on the computer Seems kind of dumb if the only choice is between quot if you want thumbnails just in certain places you better get used to smaller icons everywhere quot or quot if you want big icons you better get used to have no thumbnails anywhere quot especially since that choice wasn't present in XP since the Big icons and Thumbnail view were actually the same in size My question basically is is there any kind of way for me to have Big Icons view while activating the thumbnails only in certain folders

A:Thumbnails View Problems

Hi Linkhiei !

Run Windows Explorer (shortcut : windows key + e). Navigate to the folders for which the thumbnails are not displaying correctly. Go to tools => folder options => view. Check "show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "hide protected operating system files". Find the hidden thumbs.db file (which you can now see) and delete it. The thumbnails should be recreated next time you'll display the folder. If that worked you can reset the folder options to what they were before.

I recently upgraded to Windows 8 on my Boot Camp partition (i'm aware that Apple hasn't officially released drivers for 8 yet, i'm still running the Windows 7 Boot Camp drivers and so far it seems stable).

I've ran into a little problem in the Explorer. As i'm using an SSD, i have my Windows partition fairly small (~50GB) so i keep all of my photos on my Mac partition and don't duplicate them over.
When trying to browse through these photos on the Windows side, i can see the file name and the icon, and they open perfectly in Windows Picture Viewer, but within Explorer they all show the same default Windows "Mountain by the lake" icon.

I've been into Folder Preferences and told it only to display thumbnails and not the icon but still no luck...
Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks for your help

A:View Thumbnails in Explorer

I am going to say that because the pics actually reside on OSX, windows is unable to create a thumnail cache. It does this to speed up the viewing time, however your windows really doesn't "own" the pics folder on OSX and may not be able to build this cache properly and therefore you would not have any thumnails. here is an excert from the mighty Wikipedia about it:

"Beginning with Windows Vista, thumbnail previews are stored in a centralized location on the system. This provides the system with access to images independent of their location, and addresses issues with the locality of Thumbs.db files. The cache is stored at %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer as a number of files with the label thumbcache_xxx.db (numbered by size); as well as an index used to find thumbnails in each sized database.
However, when browsing network shares with write permission, Windows Vista and Windows 7 store a Thumbs.db file in the remote directory instead of using the (local) central thumbnail cache. This can cause issues when deleting remote shares, as the directory will become locked for a period of time when selected as Windows Explorer automatically creates a remote Thumbs.db file.
Creating Thumbs.db files on remote shares can be disabled with a Group Policy setting"

Hope that makes some sense, it would seem that is the problem to me any way.

Edit: you could just grab a couple of pics and move them over to the windows side and see if it gives you your preview, that would at least test the cache theory anyway.

I'm running Windows 98SE.

Following a big event I was designated the recipient of digital photos taken by several guests, with the task of picking "the best ones" and assembling a digital photo album. All told there are about 300 photos. However, many are similar shots. In order to be able to find and compare the similar shots, I need to have thumbnails of all the photos viewable at the same time. I tried the thumbnail feature in Windows Explorer, but for some reason many of the photos don't open as thumbnails, or take forever to do so.

Can someone please direct me to a photo viewing freeware or shareware that can show thumbnails and filename of all the pics. (As this is a one-time task, I'd rather not have to buy the software.)

Thank you.

SageThumbs is a program that allows thumbnail views of rare or unsupported file types like PSD. Up until now it's only been available for XP but now is windows 7 ready - 32 & 64 bit.

It's freeware and you can download it at softpedia - download SageThumbs.

Just thought I'd pass it along.

My system is an old Dell with Windows 7 Professional. (32bit).

Everything was ok until a couple of weeks ago and I tried to upload a photo. I could not see the thumbnail in my pictures albums to ensure I was uploading the correct one.
I have tried changing the size etc to no avail.
As i am partially disabled and cannot use my hands effectively this extra work on my fingers is causing me much pain and restricting my ability to use my laptop effectively
Thank you for any assistance you can afford me in this enquiry

I have Windows 8 64 bit, Windows 8 Photo Viewer and various applications (e.g. Lightroom) to process Panasonic Lumix RAW files in .RW2 format.

I can't find a way of displaying the image thumbnails in Windows Explorer. I've tried to install various versons of Microsoft camera codecs but they don't install in Windows 8 64 bit.

Is there a solution to this?

A:How to View Panasonic RAW (.RW2) Image Thumbnails?

The Microsoft Camera Codec packs come through Windows Update in Windows 8/8.1. I've just looked and it appears the last one was December 2013, so I guess it depends on how old your Camera is.

If you scroll down to the 'References' section at the following link, you can see what Panasonic camera's were added in that update and also all the camera's supported up to that point.

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article (KB2899189):
Update adds support for many camera-specific file formats in Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1: December 2013

It's about time we had an ISO approved camera raw format standard, as it's looong overdue.

There is a registry issue where sometimes the explorer cannot locate the thumbnails
and there for when browsing through the folder some files dont have a thumbnail but
a generic symbol for the type of folder it is, You can fix it by following the next procedure

1) Save the Registry Fix file as Registry.cmd
2) Then run the batch file with elevated administrator privileges.

And you should see an improvement,

The last few videos of my Watch History are not showing thumbnails at all. Instead, they are blank. I have tried the following. Rebooting the computer, shutting down the computer, clearing the history, clearing the cache, and refreshing YouTube. All of the things that I have done do not work. This never used to happen before until now.

This isn't about the big thumbnail picture but the little icon in the thumbnail which shows the shortcut picture or the norton 360 back up icon on the thumbnail of music files.

Windows explorer on my system cannot display all the thumbnails my photo folder. When the pictures are copied to a newly created folder, all are initially shown. However when I access the folder later, a lot of the thumbnails are gone : only the default
icons are shown.
I have set folder options to Always show icons, never thumbnails.
I have even tried deleting the thumbnail cache and rebuilding the cache but to no avail.
Could anyone help me on this please?

Hey all!!

On my desktop the album covers show up in my music directories when in thumbnail view, but on my laptop they do not.

Any ideas why?

A:Why are the album covers no longer showing on my thumbnails?

Well, after adding all my MP3s to WMP some show up and some don't. These are 90% albums that I ripped myself from my own CDs.

I previously had a computer with Vista on it. I purchased a new computer with Windows 7 and installed MS Office 2010. I transferred all my files from my old computer to my new computer and now when I go to insert pictures into my website, the pictures are not showing up as thumbnails so I can view all at the same time. They just show that little icon.

I have went through a lot of the threads in response to this problem and have tried them all without any success. Could it be old settings that transferred over and are not compatible. Thank you to anyone that can help me.

few questions:
what Antivirus are you using
how long has it been since the date of install of the OS
do you use any registry cleaner or similar of this sort
start with SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker and restart upon finding violations and post back.

Hello. The thumbnails in my music folder don't display correctly for some of my subfolders.

I've Googled this before and I haven't found any useful solutions. It seems most people just clear their thumbnail cache, but that only seems to work on the C: drive. My music folder is on a separate partition.

Anyway, this is the problem .... I have my music folder, and all subfolders, "optimized" for music. In an artist folder, the album folders will usually show the proper album artwork.

However, when I go up a level, the artist folder doesn't show the album thumbnails in it. In this picture, you can see Barenaked Ladies doesn't display properly--- but their neighbor, Band of Horses, displays just fine. It's this inconsistency that really confuses me.

Anyone have any ideas?

Its becoming common to have the little video cameras which captures videos on Mpeg4. I for one have many video Mpeg4 clips which i burn to DVD using Nero vision. Nero vision is a simple editing software which creates Home made DVD from selected video files. BUT, I have one problem. How to grab the file dates of the mpeg4 to appear on each video clip so that when we watch the home burned DVD video, we can see what date the video clip was filmed. Any Advise from this forum would be very very much appreciated.[/

Try reinstalling your KMPlayer and VLC player.

After that do system file checker:
Right click Command Prompt → run as admin → sfc /scannow

A:Issue showing image Thumbnails when browsing folders

Hi hollyw,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

Here's a tutorial on how to do this in a variety of ways. Try them in the order presented as that's from the simplest to the most complex (even though I imagine you tried the first few already). Note the comment (and link to the procedure) near the top to set the default program to Windows Photo Gallery if none of the other options work (which you may or may not want to consider - or perhaps at least try to see if it works - let us know either way - and change it back if you don't want that as the default): Thumbnails in Windows Explorer.

If that doesn't work, try rebuilding the Icon Cache: Icon Cache - Rebuild to see if that helps.

If that doesn't work, you may want to clear the thumbnail cache (it won't delete anything but the cache and will rebuild itself when you open folders though it may take more time the first time you do so as it needs to do this first). Here's how: Thumbnail Cache.

I hope this helps. If not, post back with results of what you tried and we'll try some different options.

Good luck!

Hi everyone. I am having this problem with the My Music folder. I am using Windows XP Professional. Basically, whenever I select to view the folders as thumbnails, the title of the folder does not show up. This happened the other day. I think I hit some kind of key combination wrong or something and it caused it to do that. How do I fix it?
