How to change BIOS to accept new RAM on a eMachine T3120

Q: How to change BIOS to accept new RAM on a eMachine T3120

I just try to install KOMPUTERBAY 1GB DDR DIMM (184 PIN) 400Mhz PC3200 DDR400 DESKTOP MEMORY on a EMachine T3120. With 2 sticks of mem, it started beeping and it would not boot. With one stick it will boot but after a few seconds it will go to the Blue Screen of Death.

When I replaced the 512mb ram original it all went back to normal. I thought I had the wrong RAM since it look different from the old (see attached picture) but I was told I might had to do something to the BIOS. Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Your're gonna have to look for a long time... It is time to change out of that eMachine into something you can learn on, and enjoy. The life expectancy of eMachines among our clients has been very short.
There isn't anybody at eMachines that can help you on this issue either.

I have an ABIT KX7333 board with AWARD Bios/softmenu 3. I am using corsair pc2700 ddr ram and an Athlon xp 1800+. Everytime I go into my BIOS and change anything, namely the memory CAS from 2.5 to 2, or anything with the memory for that matter, it won't boot. I know the memory can run at that rate but it jsut isn't working. Also, I am using an Nvidia GeForce 4 ti 4200 vid card, and I can't change the AGP settings for optimal use. The only thing I can use is the optimum performance defaults, which is not as optimal as I know it can be. I have the latest Bios update, what is the deal here? Any input would be greatly appreciated

A:BIOS won't accept changes....?

Possibly insufficient power, I've had the problem in the past while trying to run larger amounts of RAM at higher speeds. I had to go to a 400 watt PS.

I ordered a 120GB hard drive, but they didn't have it in store right now, so they can offer me a 160GB instead. Can a drive like this still be used on an old system that has a bios with a hard drive limit of (I believe) 120GB? I know, I wouldn't be using 40GB in that case, but that's not a problem, I just want to know if I will be able to format it as a 120GB.

If the motherboard is faulty other issues won't be much further behind - if not already showing there ugly roots.

Have you tried resetting the CMOS?

A replacement motherboard will in my opinion be a wiser decision.

I have Vista Business. The problem is that the screen resolution resets itself after a restart. When it comes up, the resolution is 1400x1050, which makes the font tiny. I reset to 1024x768, apply it, and things are fine until the next day when the computer is restarted. Any ideas?

A:Vista fails to accept screen resolution change

First, welcome to the forum.

Is this your personal computer or a computer at work? Is the resolution the only thing you notice that has changed or are other settings changed as well like folder views? Do you have to save your files, assuming this is a computer at work, to a network drive (aka the K drive in some instances)? If your answer is yes to those questions, then I think that the administrator of the computers has it set up to erase any and every personal setting on the computer except what the user places in his personal network drive.

Anyone have any other ideas? I have tried all the function keys too, nothing.

Is there anyway to get into it through DOS?

For future reference:
1. Take out HDD, battery, plug off ac power.
2. Restart, change SATA Controller in BIOS to compatible, restart.
3. Check whether the SATA Controller is Compatible or AHCI. If Compatible, force shutdown laptop.
4. Put back HDD, boot with Windows 7 Recovery CD or Installation Disc.
5. Choose Autostartup Repair.
6. Restart.

If you remove the battery on the mothernoard
for a minute or two, the BIOS loses it's
current settings and goes back to the defaults
that will work on any system. You'll have to
let it auto-detect hard drives and everything.

I used command line to work as admin and I also set up a password for admin in the BIOS to access the BIOS utility, but still no go; some things are allowed to be changed some aren't.

Any help is appreciated.

I've been thinking about this for some time. I've pretty much always used AMI BIOS, simply because I've gotten used to it.

However, I'm starting to read quite a few negative trends about it - that it's particularly slow, and messy (well, yeah, it's quite messed up) etc.

I'm running on an Asus Maximus motherboard, I'm not entirely sure what BIOS was installed by default. Nevertheless, would I earn any performance, or faster boot from switching to Phoenix or something like that?

Just curious.

A:AMI BIOS, should I change?

I think that may be a more difficult task than you realize. You do know that your BIOS is a chip on your motherboard, right? It is not practical to switch BIOSes like that.

Hope this helps,

ACPI (Power saving mode) ACPI - Advanced Configuration and Power Interface
Power On and Wakeup, devices which can, buy their activity start computer or wake up from sleep mode.
RTC = Real Time Clock, allows it to set time of day for computer to start up.
Restore on AC power loss, What happens when power to computer is cut. Last state = If it was on at the time to turn it back on when power is restored. Other setting may be to stay off even when power is restored (I would recommend that), includes using switch at the back of PSU.

On Board SATA Controller = That's controller for SATA ports where you plug in your disks (HDD. SSD or ODD), with it disabled those devices don't work.
On board SATA mode = should have IDE, RAID and AHCI modes, last one best used with SSD drives. RAID: What is RAID storage? Webopedia Definition
On board USB controller = Provides USB support.
Legacy USB Support = Lets you use USB1 and 1.1 devices.
On board audio and LAN (Local Area Network) which provides support for your wired network connections like with wired Routers etc.
On board LAN option ROM, allows starting computer over network signal: LAN Option ROM

Except for that RAID part (if you don't use RAD array) everything else is correctly set for most cases. If you have SSD it should be set to AHCI and if HDD, IDE mode.

A:change bios setting

Enabled/disabled isn't an option of the boot sequence. The boot sequence is simply a list of all the available/allowed boot devices. If it's greyed out and you can't access it, that is likely a "feature" of the manufacturer and likely can't be changed.

A:How do I change the BIOS code on the P70

Usual procedure is to: 1) download BIOS updater program from Lenovo Support Website for P70 (either ISO file to burn to a CD or executable for the appropriate OS).  Read README files for any special instructions, otherwise: 2) make certain battery is charged AND AC adapter is plugged-in and functioning.  3) disconnect any USB devices and external monitors (probably not essential, but a good idea).  3) either run the executable or boot from the CD you made 4) let the machine reboot -- may happen a couple of times. That's the whole deal.

Exodus777, welcome to the forum. HP limits the amount of BIOS settings that can be changed.  You can use the Recovery media that you made to Reset the computer.  Also, you could use the Disk Management to extend the partition next to Z.

In our organization we have 2 types of thin clients (TC). We have the T620 and the T5740 both are running W7 On these TC we want to apply a new BIOS setting. We want to enable wake on lan, so it?s easier for us to deploy updates.  To apply these settings we created a task in the HP Device Manger that enables WOL. The setting is applied on both types of TC. However on the T5740 the user is not prompted for a restart. These settings are applied when the TC is turned off and on. This give very little impact on the change. On the T620 the user get prompted for a restart, you cannot skip this. This makes it impossible to use this task during working hours. Whereas we can do this with the T5740. So my question is: Is it possible to disable the restart message on the T620?

Hi EightForum!
I have some question on how to change my BIOS into UEFI. I tried to flash a UEFI BIOS file attached on Acer website but it wont start flashing. The latest version of UEFI installer is not responding when I want to flash it, the older version said I need to have the same type of BIOS installed. Any suggestion how to install UEFI on my system?
Thanks in advance

My guess is that that BIOS is not UEFI compatible, like it said you have to have right version of MB to do that.

I got this scary question on boot up, a program has tried unsuccessfully to change the bios, press y to open the bios to inspect the changes or n to boot with the old bios. I pressed n.
Is this an attack or do legitimate programs change bios? I did not think changing a bios in this way was even possible.
The only change I recall is I updated Java before this happened and the java updater tried to open all the running processes. I don't know if opening processes is common because it may just be that I am just getting more messages from Zone Alarm instead of Norton firewall which I had been using. (I will probably use Norton again now that I found it was not responsible for a certain connection problem I had)
I am using Windows 7 Professional

Hi, my videochip at g6 1232sr seems to be broken.Has no image AR the screen also tried with monitor via vga and via hdmi cable and also no image.I now there is an almost same model 1335sr, with only difference that last one has no video chip and uses integrated video. So I have some ways to fix it but need some help.First one is to program bios of my 1232sr with version for 1335sr so it will not use video chip but work with integrated, but I wonder will is those version of bios program is suitable. If not than may be change bios chip to 1335sr version but also need to know will it suite. And the last one is to heat the video chip so it start working and to change what video chip to use just in bios. Thanks beforehand.

A:Hp g6 1232sr change bios

The 1232sr and the 1335sr, both being AMD models in the same series, use the same BIOS. The hardware is different. You can't fix this by focusing on the BIOS. The issue is the motherboard. You might be able to reflow it to make it work but your idea that there are 2 video chips and if you could just access the other one the computer would work is just not based on reality.

I have an Acer Aspire 5733z laptop. And I would like to change the bios string, if it is possible. Because currently right now at the moment, I do not have a Power section or an Advanced section in my bios. Just so you know I have an Insyde bios setup screen. So please just let me know if this is possbile. Because I really want to try and install a bios update from the Acer Aspire 5742z model laptop. And mine is a Aspire 5733z model. So please just let me know if this is possible. I bet that it is, somehow. Because my Insyde bios setup is very limited in settings, which is not good for me. Well anyway, so please get back to me as soon as possible on this issue. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. So thank you very much!

A:I would like to know on how to change my bios string

The BIOS and computer hardware must be very closely matched. Using a BIOS from a different model is almost certain to fail. If you somehow managed to force the update a boot failure is a virtual certainty. In many cases the only recovery is physical replacement of the BIOS chip by a trained technician.

You would be well advised to give up on this before you seriously damage your laptop.

I am using an HP Pavilion xt963 running Windows XP Home Ed. with SP-3.
From time to time I have reset the BIOS so that CD Drive is at the top of the list of devices from which to boot so that I could boot the system with a CD (in one case, a HDClone disk cloning application and in another a bootable CD
which is designed as a substitute for the floppy disks used to access the Windows Recovery Module.

Every time, the system ignores the change in the BIOS and boots normally instead. I go back to make sure the BIOS settings were as changed and find that they are.

The thought occurs that maybe the CD drive is at fault, but I am otherwise reading and writing with it.

I tried dowloading an update for the BIOS from HP, but can not find one on their site.

A:Cannot Boot From CDD Despite BIOS Change

I, of course, had my computer set to boot from the hard drive.
My son was playing a computer game and the computer went all nutty. I got an error message that said "NLDR is missing". After fiddling around trying to get it to work, I went into BIOS and seen that my booting order had been changed. I changed it back and everything was fine.
Is it possible that a program of some sort had changed my boot order?

A:Can a program change your BIOS?

Unlikely, unless you have a program named "My son"....
Some programs can make a temporary BIOS-change, but that change disappears at the next power-down.
Best startup-sequence is 1)Floppy, 2)CD, 3)HD

So I am stuck with having to boot from floppy which I can't do for unrelated reasons. Any ideas on why I can't change this? The keyboard works fine, I can change other settings, just not this. Multipliers are "locked", they can only be lowered from the max stock multi on a64 cpus. A "FX" series chip however, can have a multiplier increased above standard. To oc an a64, use the htt speed(stock of 200mhz, sometimes referred to as a "fsb".)

Hi all
It will mean a fresh CLEAN install of Windows I'm afraid but if you have decent SATA disks change the default setting in the BIOS from IDE to AHCI.

It really WILL improve system performance --one of my big bugbears on any discussion on performance is how the I/O subsytem (generally Disks) is forgotten - yet on most home computers the I/O subsystem is often the real cause of dreadful performance.

You'll have to do a windows CLEAN install as the system will BSOD if you just change the BIOS so you won't be able to run the installer from within Windows itself. (If you can you are very lucky).

It won't effect any Virtual machines you may have however (apart from improving disk performance).

A:Change IDE to AHCI in BIOS - Much better performance

I went back and forth between AHCI being on and being off on my new box that I built in July. Honestly, with almost ever task I did and with any benchmarking tool, I didn't see any real performance gain with AHCI enabled.

Unfortuantely, with AHCI on, I do have about an 8 second delay on each boot as the storage controller initializes. And since I do boot daily, and it was costing me 8 seconds which I didn't pick back up elsewhere, I just run with AHCI disabled.

You can also set it while notebook powering up.
Press F12 immediately after the notebook has been powered on
Then a boot menu should appear.
Here you have to choose ODD as booting device and should confirm with Enter.

That?s it

Greetings -- My hard drive went down and the PC manufacturer sent me a replacement -- I was told I can install the operating syatem, install all drivers, etc. from the recovery cds that originally came with the PC. Well, I used the recovery software, it partitioned and did its thing, I (STUPIDLY) changed the boot order to boot from HD0 and HD1 and took the CD out of of consideration. Well, as you would expect, for some reason the installation of the hard drive did not take, there is a continuous loop back to the recovery software, and I can't get it to boot from the CD drive because it is only looking for the HD when it boots up. Can anyone help save me from myself?

I have recently changed the motherboard battery but now get an error message on starting Windows. The error message is:
Floppy Disc seek failure.
Strike F1 key to continue F2 to run setup utility.

My computer, a Dell Dimension 3100C running XP SP3, has never had a Floppy Disc
drive. I have changed the Boot Sequence to the following,
1. Onboard SATA hard disc
2. Onboard USB or CD-ROM drive or
USB Floppy Drive ( not present)
3. Onboard IDE Hard drive ( not present)
4. USB device (not present)

Is this correct. The computer starts up normally after striking the F1 key . Is there something else
that requires changing?

A:Solved: Bios battery change

welcome to TSG.

Enter bios as it boots (there will be an option to press X to enter set up). In bios, change the boot order and remove floppy from the list entirely. That will go ahead and clear that.

A:how i change my shadowing and caching bios?

Exactly what is your Intel motherboard's model number? We need this number to check the bios type and it's options

In BIOS setup (usually prompted at boot). But that is probably not the problem. What does the blue screen say (at the bottom) for error information?

Its probably possible to read back the BIOS chip using SPI, and then use a hardware tool to replace the image using the file header and write a copy to a new chip.Although the advantage of this method is that in theory a 25L16/32 could be replaced with a 25L128 so the extra space can then be used to load a failsafe OS for those times some virus from Hell nails the system.

A:change BIOS to support a bootloader

A bios already has the ability to boot from various devices by selecting their order. An ATA or SATA add-on card has its own bios to select a booting drive as did most old SCSI cards. The original IBM PC/XT had an option ROM that would boot BASIC if there were no drives or disks in the drives. I believe an option ROM to load DOS still exists There is PLOP boot manager that allows you to boot from devices not supported by the bios. It's done by loading their software to your hard drive so when booting from the hard drive their boot menu comes up.I don't know if there are any windows versions of 'OS on a chip' but if so they wouldn't need to be jammed onto an existing bios chip as an option ROM or secondary bios could be built onto a PCI card.

I have a Biostar A880G+ MB with a AMD Phenom II X2 560BE cpu.... it will reboot fine if NO changes have been made in the bios... BUT when i make a bios change (mild overclock or up the Vcore) then the machine won't reboot by itself...i have to manually shut off the power, wait , then it will reboot..

i have tried update and back dating the bios, but no change.....everything seems fine once i boot into Windows 7... so i assume the cpu is ok...

My Canon Scanner gives an error message when I try to run it. The error reads:

Cano Craft CS-P 3.8
Other error
Error Code 0X10ff0800

I found something using Google that says check to see the scanner lock is on, (it is), and "that the printer mode is set to ECP in the BIOS". How do I do this? Any help would be appreciated.

I've got a brand new h8-1280t system and I'm trying to create a 64bit VMWare image but I get the error message saying the image can't be run in 64bit mode because the VT setting in the BIOS isn't set. I've tried F1 to get into the BIOS but that gives me a boot menu. I've also tried F10 but that gets me into the HP setup menu and that has nothing there for the standard BIOS settings. How do I get into the BIOS settings for this system? Thanks!

A:Need to get into BIOS setup to change VT setting

Hi: The setup menu (F10) is the BIOS menu. You may find the VT option in the power settings. Paul

I can get into the bios by pressing f2 at the time of booting. But i cant change anything there accept few.plz help.everything is greyed out.

A:Change the SATA operation in BIOS

The Dell manual does not include anything about this model's BIOS. I would suggest asking this question on the Dell Community, Laptop Section. People there familiar with your Dell and what can be changed in the BIOS.

Yesterday I got a new EliteBook 840 G3 with Windows 10. To use the screen brightness, louder etc Keys I need to press the Fn key. But as I never use the f1-12 Keys but the multimedia Keys a lot, I don`t want to need to press Fn always! In my Bios there is only an option to swap Fn with ctrl, but not to enable/disable. (BIOS-Version/-Datum    HP N75 Ver. 01.10, 31.07.2016) There is no option in the mobility center. I tried pressing Fn with esc, ctrl, num lock and a lot of other keys. I really hope someone can help me!

I would like to change the boot order in my BIOS, but nothing on the keyboard will work. I reboot, and the splash screen for Gigabyte comes up. I hit the delete or F12 button and the BIOS screen comes up. Then nothing I do on the keyboard works. I have to hit the reset button.

Since I can start the BIOS using the keyboard, I know that the keyboard is working before the Gigabyte screen comes up.

How to repair, fix or workaround?

Thanks for any help.

A:Unable to change BIOS settings

If your motherboard supports it, you may have to use a PS/2 keyboard, and then make sure Legacy USB devices are enabled.

When I am gtrying to change the BIOS order to boot from a cd I cannot because there is no such option. The cd option reads usb cd. I set that as the first option in the lineup, and the computer cannot find the cd. It says  something like "not detected."; so I cannot reboot from a cd.

I have XP and i need to access it but dont know how and couldnt find it on google.

A:How do you access BIOS to change stuff?

Shortly after you power up, a text message is displayed, something like: Press ____ to enter SETUP. The key can be: DEL, F2, etc. The message lasts only a second or two before the Windows Welcome screen appears, so you have to be quick. Your mouse will not work in SETUP. You must use your keyboard. Follow the instructions in the menu usually located at the bottom of the screen. You will be prompted if you want to save changes. One of the choices in the menu will be for your drives. You will see 4 entries there, Primary and Secondary. There will be Drive 0 and Drive 1 under each. The far right-hand column will allow you to set for Master, Slave or Auto.

Be carefull of what "stuff" you want to change.

When I went into the BIOS today, I changes these settings, numlock to off, I disabled the Floppy Disk Controller since i don't have a floppy drive, and i turned power savings to mininum, i saved to CMOS and exited and now my monitor will not show anything, the light just blinks. I figure this is because of setting power savings to mininum, i tried clearing the CMOS in hopes my settings would be cleared and the monitor would work again. I tried using the clear CMOS jumper and i left it for about 15 minutes, turned the computer back on and still the same problem. Then i put the jumper back to clear settings pins 2-3, took out the battery waited for about 45 minutes then i reinstalled the battery and moved the jumper back but the monitor still sits there and blinks, my motherboard is an MSI R480M2, any help would be appreciated.

A:Monitor will not work after BIOS change

OK, it sounds like you did what a lot of us would do. Here is one for you. The monitor light is blinking right? Now here is the bad news. If it blinks orange there is no video signal to the monitor (bad video card). If it blinks green or is a steady green the monitor is bad.

I know that this is not the news that you wanted, but it is the truth. Good luck.
