Difference between quadro cards and gaming cards

Q: Difference between quadro cards and gaming cards

I was wondering what makes NVidia's quadro cards so much more expensive than even the high end gaming GPUs? I know there more for the "workstation" PC and are used more for 3d modeling and such with programs like 3ds max and maya but what exactly do these quadro cards have that the high end gaming GPUs don't? More cuda processors? Higher Memory bus width? The reason I am asking is because I recently purchased a GTX 780 SC and was thinking of getting into either 3ds max/maya in the near future. Would purchasing another GTX 780 and putting into sli configuration help with programs like max and maya? Thanks for the any help!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

To answer your question, the Quaddro series of cards or FirePro for AMD are different from the gaming cards because they re-purpose the cards for straight up compute. The software included with them and drivers along with some additional features make them poor at gaming but better in the fields of compute/cuda dev/opencl/etc. Also those cards in most cases also cram more RAM than the standard card models for higher rendering among other things.

You will be fine with a 780 for the basics of 3DS max and maya and adding another would be somewhat beneficial later down the line but you can definitly use your superclock GTX 780 for this and get decent performance for these programs.

What are the main differences between a Nvidia Quadro type card (like NVIDIA Quadro FX 370 Video Card - 256MB GDDR2-$109) and the various dual output gaming cards out there (for instance the XFX GeForce 8600 GT XXX Video Card 256MB DDR3-$89)? I am contemplating building a new system for stock trading. Nvidia Quadro are used in workstations I know of but gaming cards seem faster and cheaper for same price-I must be missing something? Can you split the outputs of the Nvidia Quadros (ie get 4monitors hooked up to one dual output card with 4 independent windows of streaming data 1each on each monitor?) Thanks in advance...

I've read Quadro's are stable and highly recommended for CAD, etc workstations (not for gaming) and gaming cards are obviously better for gaming. I am looking to setup two separate dual output video cards in a new machine. It will be used primarily for streaming real time financial info/web surfing (no CAD nor any 3D modeling) with a secondary use of gaming (not important for me to run top games at top resolutions-average is fine). Should I look at getting Quadros or game cards. I am leaning toward the game cards like Nvidia 8600GT, etc as they are lower price and seems like if they can run games fast/no problem-why wouldn't they easily be able to handle business applications? Quadros seem to cost more and can mainly only be used for business apps?

A:Nvidia Quadro vs Nvidia gaming cards

Quadros are for Digital Content Creation and CAD purposes mainly. For you, a pair of 8600GTs would be fine.

I have a Quadro FX 3700M card on my workstation for various CAD programs.. I am searching for a way to perform a software or hardware modification so I can play games and run other programs requiring a GeForce card.
Is there any way to possibly run two non-similar graphics cards side by side, or task designated/sharing?
So I could actually run CAD software on the dedicated Quadro, while relying on an externally connected GeForce card for all other media, pics, music, games, etc?
Any other money saving solutions besides buying/building a desktop?
I?m on a 64bit Vista workstation (soon to be Windows 7 or Ubuntu w/ a Windows VirtualBox) 3GHz Intel Quad Core 2 with 4GB RAM from Xi Computers.

Rather than getting a GTX 460 SC shipped from the other side of Australia, I've found a card locally. I just want to know which of the following cards is better. I'll be getting them for exactly the same price so it doesn't matter which one. As far as I can tell, the MSI card is better but I would really appreciate another opinion on this.

msi GeForce GTX 560
Official Site
Newegg.com

EVGA GeForce GTX 460 SuperClocked
Official Site
Newegg.com
It comes down to these two cards. Whichever one is better, I'll be buying.
Thanks in advance,
Jaidyn

A:Difference between two cards

Generally speaking the 560 will be the better card.
And if the price is about the same it would be the better choice I think.

If you go with the EVGA card though, it might be worth looking for the AR skew.
Like this one: Newegg.com - EVGA 01G-P3-1373-AR GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) Superclocked EE 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

Lifetime warranty+ 90 days to Step-up to a faster card if you so choose.
Otherwise the same.

Never had a MSI card, so can't really comment on how good or bad they may be.

Hey I've been looking at this gfx card. http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=306373&view=detailed . Its the radeon x800. This version is 255 yet in the PCworld near me they have the AGP version of this for 410 on the box it says radeon x800SE or something to that effect. Is going with AGP instead of PCI express worth all that extra cash?

Failing that could anyone recommend a decent 256 MB gfx card in the 250 to 400 euro range?

There are cards that are considered "high end" yes... There are studio quality sound cards available but they offer many extra connector and jacks that the average person has no need for. To get optimum sound you also need to make sure the speakers are good, or the best sound card is not going to matter.

so what difference does the memory make?

If u play a game like doom 3 (i know is not out yet), would difference a card make if it were the same spec card but one had 128 mb and other had 256 mb.

The reason i am asking this is because i have a geforce 2 64 mb and i looking to spend about 200 $ on a new video card by the time doom 3 comes out so i can play that game with a decent setting.

Is brand a considerable factor to consider? Is the difference in performance truly worth $45? (I actually found the Gigabyte card at zipzoomfly.com for $10 less, but that's still a notable gap in price.) I noticed a Sapphire Radeon x800GT 256MB card on newegg for only a few dollars more, so is that perhaps the best course?

I would greatly appreciate any insight into the differences. Thank you very much for your time and patience.

A:Does brand difference matter with GeForce 6600GT cards?

the gigabyte u listed from newegg has passive cooling thats why its more expensive. I havent had any experience with Gigabyte. but i have with eVGA and i can say they r a good brand. give u the chance to upgrade ur card too while paying only the difference.

what u should look for are warranties and google aroudn to see how well the manufactures handle their customers. I believe eVGA now gives their video cards lifetime warranty and they have good tech supoprt and customer service according to experience.

however be warned, their video cards are pretty loud (especially the 6600GT)
If ur planning to up the stock cooling, then its no matter.

Hi there,

My computer came with a VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP card, which is apparently a Graphics/Video Card with onboard video (or the other way around, video w/ onboard graphics) Now, this is a terrible card- it can barely play any modern games. I want to get a new graphics card, but I'm concerned if I install a new Graphics Card, that because of the onboard video, it will affect this greatly, or if I actually need a video card instead of graphics. What do I actually need, and will it adversely affect anything on my PC.

Hi everyone,

I'm going to be building my own system later this year and I'm sort of on the verge of being into gaming, but I can't really justify putting out much cash. I was looking at the ATI X800 GTO PCI-E which has 256 bit, 256 MB, and 6 vertex shaders, and all the higher end support like Smart Shader and DX 9.0c. The one thing it's missing from more expensive cards is that it has 12 pixel pipelines instead of 16.

Anyone who is knowledgeable about these things tell me what kind of a difference that might make? I might play things like HL 2 and Sims 2 and I'd like high resolution and good, but not phenomenal, frames, if possible.

Thanks much!

Whats the difference between quot workstation quot and quot gaming quot graphics cards Even though I don t know much about coding and instructions is that the main difference Do workstation graphics cards handle programs such as maya and dsMax better because of the way they are built to process code and instructions And do gaming cards handle games like Half-Life and UT k because they are built coded in such a way to perform better for those applications Please go into depth to explain and try to give analogies if at all possible Workstation vs. Cards: Gaming Graphic I happen to be an Animation GraphicDesign student so I Graphic Cards: Workstation vs. Gaming don t wanna waste my money on a graphics card that s meant to be used for something else And even though this is the video audio thread would Graphic Cards: Workstation vs. Gaming you suggest Intel or AMD to combo with the according graphics card So far from what I ve read it seems like Intel is the way to go Thanks in advance for your input nbsp

A:Graphic Cards: Workstation vs. Gaming

so a comparison between mainstream graphic cards and workstation only cards.let see, graphic cards nowadays are focused on only being clocked higher to give higher fps scores in demanding games, they are designed ground up focusing on direct3d applications like 90% of the games.however workstation graphic cards are clocked slower for stability reason and focus heavily on opengl applications.some of them are optimized and carry special plugins for 3dsmax and maya.in the mainstream texturing or prgrammatic vertex or fragment shading would be considered high ends in workstations however AA lines and points, overlay plane support, two-sided lighting (fixed function path), logic operations, fast pixel read-back speeds, and dual 10-bit 400MHz RAMDACs and 2 dual-link DVI-I connectors supporting 3840x2400 on a single display are high end.needless to say they are for cad designing for programs like proengineer/autocad and not to mention animation programs like 3dsmax and maya.

now there have always been softmod that you could do on a mainstream graphic card that can make it a workstation one like a geforce to quadro and a radeon 9800 to a firexl through freefirexl but you wouldnt see the perfromance increase and would be bugged continously by its drivers.these workstation cards offer features like occulsion culling, lossless depth z-buffer,line anti-alaising,accelarated clip region, clip planes.two sided lighting, opengl logic and overlay planes.a quadro for example can achieve 80 million lit and textured triangles per second fillrate.they also carry third generation vertex and pixel programibility.here is a qute from the manufacturers"Alias|Wavefront, Discreet, Softimage, and more. End users can take full advantage of the programmable NVIDIA Quadro FX architecture by enabling sophisticated real-time shaders to simulate a virtually unlimited range of physica l characteristics, such as lighting effects (fresnel effects, chromatic dispersion, reflection, refraction, BRDF models*, etc.) and even physical surface properties (such as casting effects, porosity, molded surfaces, etc.).

For example, car models can be modified on-the-fly to change their clear coat and metallic reflective paint properties; the sheen of a character`s skin can be adjusted through a dynamic range from oily to dry by interactively adjusting a few sliders; or objects can be programmed to dynamically self shadow. Real-time shaders allow these effects to be combined and modified interactively-impossible with simple 2D static texture maps."
there is also the issue of subpixel precision-"Sophisticated real-time effects typically involve multiple mathematical operations that demand high precision to maintain image quality. The NVIDIA Quadro® FX features 128-bit IEEE floating-point precision, making available millions of colors in a broad dynamic range. This results in the highest level of accuracy and the ultimate in visual quality.
High subpixel precision is another major contributor to image quality, addressing visual anomalies that cause models to "sparkle" or "crack." The NVIDIA Quadro FX virtually eliminates this problem by providing 12 bits of sub-pixel precision¡Xfour times higher precision than the nearest competitive product.

Precision continues to be a critical factor when rendering high quality antialiased images-for both line and full-scene antialiasing (FSAA). The NVIDIA Quadro FX architecture accelerates antialiased points and lines in hardware, and supports up to 16X FSAA. And unlike other competitive hardware, NVIDIA Quadro FX products drive FSAA up to a phenomenal 3840x2400 resolution"
besides these feature they carry the same old 8 pixel pipe line and are'nt clocked high compared to there counterpart mainstream cards.so i guess the mainstream cards and the workstation cards would run maya and 3ds max at pretty much the same speed but if you wan to make use of the above listed features your going to... Hello all, has anyone ever experienced this with 2 nvidia cards in SLI.

Before I enable SLI I have 4096 total available graphics memory showing in WEI.

After I enable SLI it goes to 3968.

It`s no big deal at all, but I just wondered if this occurred to anyone, if you even noticed it.

And my question is why might it do it.

It did it on my MSI board and now the Sabertooth.

I`m assuming it`s just a Windows thing and can`t be adjusted.

Hey guys

I just want to know are they any good graphics cards that are good for gaming (like running BF3 on high/ultra) with a price range between £70 - £95

I found this one but not sure if its any good
http://www.cclonline.com/product/72...-Radeon-HD-6850-Graphics-Card-1024MB/VGA0482/
If there's better than that for a similar price link me please

I have a ACER M3400 Phenom
8GB RAM
and I will be upgrading the power supply to 650w soon so that shouldn't be a problem

A:Any good graphics cards for gaming ?

The HD6850 is a decent card but you'll not get ultra high settings and good frame rates from it.
However in your price range it as good as it gets without spending considerably more on a card.
Upgrade the PSU first or at the same time as the card.

Hi.. So my psu got messed up so i have now sent it in and using a old psu without pci-e power so i had to change out my GTX 660 to my old ATI Radeon 4650
Though the gtx 660 kicks donkey in gaming the Radeon is running flash games smoother and some other stuff to
Also a bit of a OpenCL vs CUDA war
When rendering with my AMD A8 laptop with intergrated gpu the rendering times in Sony Vegas 12 accually was shorter than the video with OpenCL gpu acceleration on But with
Cuda acceleration on with my GTX 660 with around 950 CUDA cores the rendering times are about dubble the video lenght

This is soo confusing??
Did i do a very stupid move buying a 660 instead of a R9 270x card for Gaming and video editing and rendering

A:AMD cards Vs nVidia cards? Got very confused by a thing

You didn't mess up on anything but to be honest AMD has gotten better with encoding speeds over the years

I just recently bought a new GTX 780 ti I have not done any video yet i have been doing benchmarks but i will find out soon enough

the time it normally took me to render and burn with 2x7970's were about 20 minutes depending on what it was doing some took longer then others to about 30 minutes but actually cut down to 25 minutes

Direct Compute and Open GL are on fire right now with AMD cards they use it very well and Bitcoin Miners seem to love how much over Nvidia they run

For me it's doesn't mater as long as it suits my needs but other people may differ with the way AMD has been changing GPU Architecture people have been going red and also the prices have gone up so if you are looking to change now you need to look for a card worth the coin because they gone up 20% matching Nvidia prices

I am going into my fourth year of architecture school and I am building a desktop. I plan on using my system for Adobe cs5, CAD, Revit, 3ds max, Maya, Ecotect, Virtual Enviroment, Rhino, and Grasshopper. I am having trouble deciding on a graphics card. Is it necessary to have a workstation graphic card to do 3d modeling with these programs? If so, what type of card would you reccomend, Nvidia or ATI?

List of requirements given by the school:
Intel® Core? i7
12 GB+ Memory
2TB Hard Drive
Dual 20"+ monitors
DVD±RW Drive
Dedicated ATI or nVidia video adapter with at least 1-2GB memory
Wireless Network Adapter
Windows 7 ® Home Premium (64-bit)

A:Workstation graphic cards vs. consumer cards

The last question is the easiest - I would go with nVidia because their CUDA processing engine accelerates many of the applications you use. I know Adobe CS5 and Maya take advantage of it but don't know about the rest of the applications you listed.

Adobe CS5 added acceleration for multiple applications with the Mercury Playback Engine which is designed specifically for more recent nVidia cards with the CUDA feature set.

Third party review and recommendations for use with CS5 (the card list starts about half way down the page)

http://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/PremiereCS5.htm

CUDA (see more info below about CUDA) supported graphics cards (note that the GeForce or mainstream and gamer cards (for desktop and laptop PCs) are listed near the bottom of the page:

http://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-gpus

nVidia provides information touting how much their cards accelerate Adobe CS5, including general description about CUDA with internal links to more info for advanced users:a

Here are a couple of reviews on workstation cards you might find informative:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/firepro-v9800-eyefinity-quadro-5000,2780.html

The choice between workstation vs. gaming cards is a little more difficult. The higher end gaming cards are very similar to the lower end gaming cards, the difference is primarily in the drivers and service. Workstation drivers have been more finely tuned to the kinds of work done in WS applications - but this can have a signficant impact on performance for those applications. Morever, with the higher price you pay buys you better, generlly quicker support for dealing with issues.

I think the choice must depend on how and how much you use the cards. If you use the applications for several hours a day, the higher productivity of the workstation station cards may pay for the higher cost several times over. Otherwise you might do just as well with the gaming cards.

If you decide to go with gaming cards, you might find some helpful information on upgrading video cards at upgradevideocards.com, but they have no information on workstation cards:

A:IBM server with M71IX mobo - can it utilize Gaming video cards

It would seem that you have PCI-X slots, as for PCI Extended. I can't think of any gaming card that fits into those slots. You also have PCI slots, those are your best bet, but they too will only take up to 8400 GS or so. Newest games won't propably even try to run with that.

I have an RCA Kazoo RD1000 MP3 player and I am looking to buy a memory card for it but I'm not sure which one to get. In the manual, it references Multi Media Card (MMC) but in the stores, the only ones I can find are the SD cards. All of the memory card readers have one slot for the SD and the MMC cards.

I am wondering if SD and MMC are backwards compatible or not.

any help would be cool.

A:Are Multi Media Cards and SD cards the same?

Not sure how accurate this statement is:
MMC Card
Weighing less than two grams and taking up the area of a postage stamp, MultiMediaCards are ideal for use in portable devices like digital audio players, digital cameras, and PDAs. In addition to its distinct size advantage over other removable memory, the MultiMediaCard's low power draw makes it highly suitable for battery-powered mobile applications. MMC cards will fit into devices that have an SD slot - MMC cards are the same size, and are often much cheaper than SD cards, because they're an 'open' standard (SD card manufacturers have to pay royalties, and MMC card manufacturers don't!).

http://www.filesaveas.com/memorycard.html

I didn't think they could be interchanged though......perhaps someone else can shed some light. I use SD Cards.

will the 9 series make the $220 8800gts drop to something like $100 or will it still be $200?

A:Will the 9 series cards make the 8 series cards cheaper?

eventually, and then the 10 series will do the same to the 9 series, rinse and repeat. basically as long as its one of the fastest cards the gts will be expensive, when it becomes obsolete (relatively) its price will drop.

from the question i assume you are looking to upgrade, if you want to only spend $100 then i'd say your best bet is an OCed 7600 GT, lotsa bang for your buck, i can run FEAR with pretty high settings with just one of them.
but really, what are you looking for?

So I recently purchased a gtx 780 SC with the intention of gaming and doing 3d modeling work and game development with maya/blender/unreal engine 4. Originally, I was thinking of starting with the 780 and maybe a little later get the mid range quadro k4000 to use specifically for the 3d modeling work. I was wondering if just purchasing a GTX titan black with its double precision floating point performance would be a better option? Doing this would be around 100-150 cheaper and I would be able to game and do 3d modeling work with one card. I guess my main question is does the titan black compare with the quadro card mentioned above in terms of 3d modeling? I know the K4000 is a mid-ranged card so I wasn't sure if the titan maybe would do even a little better than the k4000? Any help appreciated.

As far as 3D modeling goes, the biggest thing you will need is ram on the card for the blender and 3D modeling aspect. Some programs are specifically limited to the Quaddro series of cards which means you will have to check if the programs you use will work with any GPU.

Basically, I would say either just get a 780ti 6gb edition (Being released this month I believe) if your programs will all work fine on the GTX series of cards. Or if that won't work, you should be fine with the 780 and grabbing a Quaddro series card to go with it. I would say only get Titan black if you really need the extra compute performance it brings because otherwise its expensive and still would end up being better in my book just getting an K4000 with your 780 since you already own the 780.

I'm thinking of buying a new video card, but I would like to probably just add one in SLI mode. I have an EVGA 8800GTS 320MB. I believe I read that I do not need to get the same brand, but do I need to get one that has the same amount of memory or can I get another brand 8800GTS with 512MB (or more) of VRAM?

Any thoughts if this is worth it or should I just get a whole new single video card to replace it? Some of the 8800gts's I've seen on Newegg look pretty cheap.

well now days the 8800GT's with 512 are very cheap on newegg.com.. some are $110

and no you cannot use yours, and a new one in SLI.. they wont work. you need to get another one like yours.. you can get either or, a 320, or a 640.. but since one is slower.. they will both run at the slower ones speed of 320. but thats ok.. so either do that. but will be hard to fine. or just get one new 4870, or a GTX260

I'd really try to get off the IDE drive if I could and get the data on a new drive. It will be faster, it will be quieter, and you will have less cable clutter by not having those IDE ribbon cables in the box.

I don't have experience with that particular card, but have used others (albeit 10+ years ago) and they worked out ok.

No real deficit in external NIC cards from my experience,I would make sure it's a PCI-e card though.

Hi I just ordered a x800 xl from ebuyer but now the card is apparently discontinued, so I had a look around on the site for a different one and found this:

PNY 7800GT 256mb 256 bit DDR3 Dual RAMDACs 400Mhz PCI-E Dual DVI/HDTV-out

Its only £229 and I thought that was pretty cheap to be honest. I wonder if anyone could give their views on this and let me know if pny are a good manufacturer.
Thanks a lot ben.

i have enabled readyboost on this card. it is a sandisk standard 1gb card. readyboost is saying to use 0mg for optimum performance. i have allocated 650mg,but how do i know if it is working or not?

A:Sd Cards

Don't know if this helps or not. I have a question also.

I tried the same thing with a PNY 1 GB Compact Flash (CF) card. Think the Vista O/S message (Under the 'ReadyBoost' tab when you click on properties of the drive) told me my CF card was not fast enough, or some such message. I did a little research & found some photography cards that were supposed to be high speed but were more expensive.

In my search I ran across & have just received a USB 2 GB San Disk 'Cruzer' Micro Flash Drive. They are cheap around $25.

The system is telling me it is using 1.79 GB of this drive (some programs were included on the drive that I'm ignoring for now) for ReadyBoost. I would like to know how to tell if it is really working or not.

The task manager appears to just show the original 1 GB of memory I had originally. (Probably exactly what it is supposed to do, since this is the true RAM I have.

Hope this make sense. This is my first communication via BleepingComputer.com.

Thanks, Whymeworry

I have two 9500GT video cards one id Evga and one is BFG they are both 1GB DDR2. I have looked into it but you experts will know. I think it's possible to set up a crossfire configuration. It might not be worth doing but i would mostly do it for fun and to see if I can get it working. My current mobo supports it and would like to play with it.

Is it possible with the same GPU but different companies and possibly slightly different specs on the rest of the card? I thought if it the same GPU you could do it.

Also you might know if I can make a USB install flash drive with professional and use it to install home premium or ultimate as long as I have the licence keys?

A:SLI with 2 different cards same GPU

First off they are Nvidia cards so crossfire is out of the question. Your wanting to setup SLI and yes as long as they are the same GPU it cesn't matter who made the card. As far as having slightly different specs. If the cards run at different clock speeds then SLI will run both cards at the lower clock speed. 2nd question you can only install the OS that is on the drive as Home premium and Ultimate have different specs. Maybe Home premium. Correct me if I'm wrong. http://www.sevenforums.com/general-d...-ultimate.html

Is it true that AGP video cards have shared memory with ur installed RAM? I was thinking of buying an ATI Radeon 9200 128MB AGP video card but someone told me that when I install it it will take 128MB from my installed RAM. Thanx in advance.

A:AGP Vid Cards

Typically, unless there is something that I wasn't aware of...any external video card has it's OWN onboard memory that is separate from your system memory. This card should not use any system memory to run. This is why it's always better to purchase a stand alone video card verses an onboard video card. Your system has it's own memory and your video card has it's own memory. Alot of people may not realize it, but people that run onboard video cards tend to experience lots of system software crashes because software that is written to use system ram sometimes access and writtes to VIDEO CARD allocated ram causing system crashes...

so in short...no the AGP card that is stand alone typically does not share computer system memory.

A:2 Nic Cards

You can run two cards but I don't really think it will speed up your downloads..

are you running a 10/100 card if so get a 10/100/1g card..that will speed things up..but remember your download will only be as fast as where you are pulling..and unless your have a T1 or greater pipe you won't even come close to pulling 1g...

Not only that but if you are running XP the packet size will be limited...
Plus your bus speeds kick in and your read write speeds..

Your system can only pull as fast as the slowes link in the chain...!

What is the difference between USB 3.0 cards with power supply connectors, and those without? When would you need a card with a power supply connector and when would you need one without? Does either or have a speed difference even though they both claim 5gbps?

Why don't they point these difference out when selling the product? As many boxes as I have seen, not once have they mentioned the difference or plus side/lack performance to either one.

Thanks!

Are you sure that it's a power supply connector and not just another USB port? I've seen some with an "Internal" USB port or header on them. Can't say as I've seen one with a power connector on them.

You can only SLI with the same card,GTS 250 it doesn't need to be from the same manufacturer but it has to be the same model card.

IM looking for a new graphics card. I need a PCI card. Im looking all over the web and all the AGP cards i see have 8mb, 16mb, 32mb, 64mb ect. but all of the PCI cards I look at dont have anything like that. What do I look at on the PCI cards in comparason to the AGP cards and how would i compare them? Or am i maybe not seeing that the PCI cards r the same way.

A:AGP VS PCI vid cards

The difference between AGP and PCI cards is Speeeeed!

AGP handles speeds twice as fast as PCI. That's why PCI video cards are becomming extinct except on older systems. You pretty much need an AGP card if you're doing any serious gaming. Otherwise you can get away with PCI.

AGP is NOT the same as PCI. The look differently and use different kinds of slots. IF your motherboard doesn't have an AGP slot you can't install an AGP card.

There are also different degres of AGP, AGP1, AGP 2, and AGP 3. Respectively they are 1x, 2x, and 3x.

Your motherboard also has to support AGP 2 and 3 to get AGP 2 and 3

NVidia and ATI make the best video cards, in my opinion. My personal choice is NVidia.

Another consideration with AGP is amount of RAM. More ram means better performance, also DDR is twice as fast as SDRAM so a 64mb of DDR is equal to 128 of SDRAM.

Also, here's something called PCI Express. I don't know anything about it through, except its set to replace AGP:

Hope this helps,

The Hulk!

My PC motherboard has 4 RAM slots, each which fits a 1GB card. I installed all 4 of them, yet when I look at Properties under My Computer, it says I only have 3.30 GB total. Is there a reason for this?

A:RAM cards

Yes, windows 32bit software will only see that amount of usable memory - common issue reported

The PC should see 4GB in the BIOS but needs memory for internal registers and other devices and so that memory cannnot be used

so theres nothing wrong with the PC - unless you have 64bit software installed

i have a dell 4550 mobo, the AGP slot is 4x/2x. i have my eye on a GeForce FX5900. AGP 8x/4x. nVidia has clearly stated that any GeForce or Quadro cards are backwards compatible. meaning if the AGP slot is 2.0, and required is 3.0 (on the card). it will still run. but will your power supply give enough power to the card? my dell has a 250 watt PSU. most likely yours does too. keep the power supply in mind when choosing a video card.

I'm Thinking of buying a TV card for my PC. It is a modern gaming computer and is fairly well speced.

I'm looking at either a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 TV Tuner Card or a KWorld PC150.

Reading the system requirements they both say that you need a sound card to operate them. My question is why the sound card. Why Is on-board sound not adequate

Thanks

A:tv cards

DX elements and even EAX effects for Creative models would be two reasons as well as the higher quailty sound most cards tend to offer. Even while onboard sound chips have been seeing improvements over the last few years the separate expansion cards will still generally have other things available like HD audio as one thought.

Here the tv tuner/capture card wouldn't seem to work out if I was working with the onboard despite the board's 5.1 surround sound capabilities. The tv card's software automatically detects the card and adjusts itself to utilize the output there to the speakers. Without the separate card however the onboard audio chip may not even be detected by a tuner card.

Hi,
I was wondering if a CPU card for a PCI bus which has the capability of working with another CPU card (can't remember what that's called) can be used on a normal motherboard not a backplane. presumably it would have to be an active compatible card as well. Not sure about if it is powered by a 12 volt molex (and/or) if that makes a difference.

the idea was to take some of the processing away from the motherboard CPU. I read some where that they are capable of addressing separately to other cpus but I would have thought you would get major power issues and conflict.

Any ideas??
