Preferred Solution: Windows Update loops with a "Restart your computer to install important updates"

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows Update loops with a "Restart your computer to install important updates"

Thanks Alex
I had already tried the steps in the post you linked.
In the end I have had to reinstall Windows 7 over the top (keeping all settings) and this has fixed the issue with Windows Updates.
It is frustrating that I could not find a solution as I do not like glossing over the issues without first finding a solution but unfortunately it was not my pc and time was against me.
Thanks for all the replies.

For over hours Windows Update has said quot Restart your computer to install important updates quot yet every time I restart and check Windows Update it is still saying quot Restart your computer to install important updates quot Before I deleted SoftwareDistribution to try and solve matters the update history showed a security update KB which has been showing as quot pending quot for the whole of this period despite numerous restarts but never shows as quot successful quot or quot failed quot It just stays stuck at quot pending quot It doesn't appear in issue important updates" to your "Restart computer install installed updates but when I try to install it manually it says it's already installed SURT installed hotfix KB SFC scan didn't find any problems Microsoft Fix it said Cryptographic services could not be stopped I've tried to upload the CBS folder as per your posting instructions but it's over MB zipped and it didn't upload PS I don't know if this is relevant but this update KB relates to a vulnerability when Remote Desktop Protocol is enabled When I went to the dialogue box to check if RDP is enabled system advanced system settings remote the check boxes relating to RDP are missing All I have is a check box for remote assistance so I don't know for sure if RDP is enabled or disabled

Greetings Seven Forums Gurus and apologies for the TL ad "Restart to important your infinitum - install computer updates" DR nature of this "Restart your computer to install important updates" - ad infinitum post Trying to put all the relevant "Restart your computer to install important updates" - ad infinitum information in So a problem has come up from a little old lady customer here She got hit by the non-voluntary Windows upgrade last week - caught it somewhere before it did the final install and who knows what she did exactly but before I got a chance to look at the computer she had somehow managed to revert to At that point I ran the GWX toolbox and canned the upgrades but by then the damage was done and the machine won't check for updates and won't stop saying it "Restart your computer to install important updates" - ad infinitum hasn't finished installing the last update Notice it says never checked for and never installed updates - these are probably as a result of some of the stuff I have tried It also says quot You receive updates - for Windows only quot although there is no option on the settings page to check for other products' updates Incidentally I have also tried changing the settings to Never install updates and removing both check-marks - makes no difference Under Update History the only item listed is Hotfix for Windows KB that's the System Update Readiness Tool which I ran manually today If I click quot check for updates quot it very quickly pops up a little window to say quot Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because you must first restart the computer quot blah blah blah Well it's been restarted more than a dozen times with all the various things I've tried OK so what have I tried Amongst other things and not necessarily in this order it's been a couple of days of hacking around I tell you - Microsoft Fixit twice I think - Tweaking com quot Windows Repair AIO quot - Manually resetting update components Otion from tutorial - SURT as mentioned above - sfc scannow I don't know why I bothered with this one I've never seen it do anything - in this case it reported no errors nothing to do - possibly some other stuff I have forgotten now Every time Windows Update - restart your computer And of course the nag box that gives you the option of postponing for minutes hour or hours The System amp Application event logs show no errors or even warnings that look even vaguely relevant to me There is no Windows Update error number to quote Just refuses to check for updates The CBS log folder consists of four CbsPersist CAB files of between and MB that don't compress and one of about MB None of them are recent four days old and older - any point in uploading any of them I have included the current CBS log file as well as the quot uneventful quot SUR logfiles So any helpful suggestions will be gratefully accepted PS I would have reverted Windows to a previous state if there were any but alas

Hi Chris,
Try this for starters.

1. Close all the open windows.
2. Click the "Start" Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
3. Right-click "Command Prompt" and click "Run as administrator".
4. In "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type in " net stop WuAuServ " (without the quotes) and press Enter.
Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully stopped before you try to rename the folder.
5. Click the "Start" Button, in the "Start Search" box, type in " %windir% " (without the quotes) and press Enter.
6. In the opened folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".
7. Right-click on the folder, select "Rename" and type " Sdold " (without the quotes) to rename this folder.
8. Still in "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type the command " net start WuAuServ " (without the quotes) in the opened window to restart the Windows Updates service.

Got acouple more things in the locker if it fails

Hi,
Why do we get the option "Windows Updates. Important updates are available. Go to PC settings to install them" on the logon screen? Need to remove this option but without altering the update functionality. We are using SCCM for windows update.
Can you help how to remove it by GPO or any other option for large scale systems (5000+). At present the user cannot install the updates as it has been restricted. Attached the screen shot also.

A:Any way to hide "you have hidden important updates" WGA nag banner in Windows Update?

Description of Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA)

It's pretty basic. The core of it is, they are a company that sells computer Operating System software and don't want to be ripped off. And to prevent rip-offs from updating beneficial security and other support they provide FREE, they require you run the WGA.

That isn't unreasonable.

Don't like it? Get Linux or whatever.

I'm trying under "Windows Update" to click on "check for updates" however when I do that I get message
"windows update cannot currently check for updates, because updates on this computer are controlled by your system administrator"
I am the admin on the PC however this PC points to a In-office "WSUS server" to normally get its update
Is there a work around to this that I could add to my local group policy or registry?
I have been under Group Policy Object Editor -->Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates -->
Windows Components --> Windows Update
but seen nothing that would allow to override this error
Any suggestion(s) would be most appreciated

A:"Important" updates to install on vista?

Check Computer properties and make sure that it says you have SP2. That does sound like a lot of updates, but then there have been some almost every "Update Tuesday", so the number may vey well be quite high.

You may not want to download and install them all at one time, however. Pick a bunch and install, and then some more later. It's not likely that problems will arise, but if you have smaller batches, you'll have an easier time finding any that cause trouble.

Then, be smart. After you get it all set up, back it up. Your hard drive will fail, more infections will come along, and you'll be doing this all again if you are not prepared. Periodic updates to your backup will keep it recent and you can keep the first one as your "factory restore". You can even merge your restore partition with your main one for more space and make an image of that for your "factory restore". Since it will have all your programs, updates, and files, it will save you a lot of time for recovery.

Free drive backup software (imaging, cloning, and archiving - backups can be created on a second hard drive, internal or external, or on DVD's, or BluRay disks. One BluRay disk will hold most peoples' entire system drive's backup at 25 GB's using compressed images, 50 GB's double-layer):

Paragon Backup & Recovery 2012 (Recovery boot CD or USB key)
Macrium Reflect (Free)
O&O Disk Image Express or (mirror)
Easeus Todo Backup
ODIN (open-source)
Redo Backup & Recovery (Boot CD)
Clonezilla Live (A bootable CD of Debian with Clonezilla.)
Drive Image XML
PING (Partimage is not Ghost) (Boot CD with option Clam Antivirus)
Partition Saving
Clonezilla
Passmark OSFClone (Bootable, cloning only)

There are also many commercial products with more features.

Hi,

I have several Updates that fail; 3 of which are classified as "Important." The updates get applied, I reboot, then after reaching 99%, I get the error message, "We would not complete your updates. Undoing changes."

KB2962409, 2967917, 2981580, and all versions for English Input Personalization Dictionary (e.g., 2881553) fail.

I connected with the Answer Desk and they told me to try the two-button reset (Volume Up + Power button) and then after reboot, try the updates again. Needless to say, I rolled my eyes, complied and, of course, it didn't work and I'm getting the same result.

The Answer Tech also told me that the 4 KBs I mentioned above will be pulled and replaced in a few days. I am skeptical but, regardless, I am still stuck with not being able to get those updates installed.

I'm running Windows 8.1 on a Surface Pro 2.

Any ideas? Thanks!

This a.m. I see there are a bunch of "Important" Win8.1 updates recommended (my Win update settings are to notify me, but to allow me to choose whether or not to download & install them.

Have there been any known issues / problems with these updates?

So I have this weird thing happening in my relatively fresh install of Windows 10.
Whenever I search for "Check for Updates" or "Windows Update settings" on the search box of the start menu, I get the results that I want but if I press enter or try to click on those results nothing happens.. As far as I know I can click all others search results but those, and maybe others related to windows update.

I can still get updates by going to Settings>Update & Security though.

In my other computers this works fine, and as far as I can tell all the updates are done.
From what I've searched around other people seemed to have a similar issue where they couldn't acess the settings at all which isn't my case. Still I tried the sfc/ scannow that a lot of users seemed to recommend but no results.

A:Can't click on "Check for Updates" "Windows Update settings" on Start

Spanker,
.............. Still I tried the sfc/ scannow that a lot of users seemed to recommend but no results. .....................

Please clarify what did you mean by "no results".

When sfc /scannow is completed, it will give you one of the following 3 reports....................(paraphrasing)

1. No integrity violation.
2. Found corrupted files and repair is successful.
3. Found corrupted files but unable to repair some of them.

Which one of the above is applicable to you ?

For over 24 hours Windows Update has said "Restart your computer to install important updates", yet every time I restart and check Windows Update it is still saying "Restart your computwer to install important updates". The update history shows a security update, KB3069762, which has been showing as "pending" for the whole of this period despite numerous restarts, but never shows as "successful" or "failed". It just stays stuck at "pending".

Is it likely this is the cause of the problem? I also uninstalled the "Upgrade to Windows10 Home " update which now shows as failed.

PS - I've tried uninstalling security update KB3069762 and then reinstalling manually via Microsoft Security Bulletins (MS15-067) but it still shows as pending after restarting.

When trying to use Windows Update, the updates download successfully but fail to install. The following message appears: "Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed." Boot into "Safe Mode with Networking" (restart while tapping F8 repeatedly) and see if you can install the updates. This should work.

Hello guys,

I don't know what I did, but nothing happens when I click on those two things in the search bar:

View image: wtf

I reinstalled Windows a few hours ago, and IIRC pressing those with the mouse lead somewhere. Now when I click on them, it does nothing. I have to type in "Settings", so I can click on the actual Windows App. Then I can navigate to those settings. IIRC those results were "clickable".

Can somebody help?

Thanks in advance!

If the answer is never then it couldn't be more clear that you are overdue since you have massive corruption that causes almost nothing important to work right.

Did you run SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Did you uncheck everything in msconfig>Startup and then >Services after Hiding all MS Services, then try Repair Install?

Try uninstalling your AV.

Just thought I'd pass along this observation Something done fixed "restart" Windows my Update other and Recent issues! hardware by Microsoft in a fairly recent say no more than the past - weeks has addressed TWO specific seemingly BIOS-related issues I've had on my Supermicro C SBX motherboard ever since installing Win back in December The issues are obviously specific to this mobo and Recent Windows Update fixed my "restart" and other hardware issues! possibly others because they do NOT show up on my other machine which uses an ASUS P Q board Anyway the two problems were Windows quot restart quot does not work but rather seems to hang up in the midst of Recent Windows Update fixed my "restart" and other hardware issues! the hardware re-boot sequence I see the quot hard drive in use quot light stuck on which is tied to my Adaptec SCSI Adapter card when in use not to my SATA drives So this might be an issue relating to the Adaptec card in this C SBX board Don't know Anyway I'm forced to use quot shutdown quot which does work and then a cold power-on re-boot from OFF as my replacement for a simple quot restart quot to avoid the intervening power off on sequence Although I have three SATA drives in the machine inevitably only one or two of them appear in the BIOS-produced device discovery list of hard drives that appear during the VERBOSE output at boot time Sometimes all three will appear But this is generally after some time of significant maintenance to Window However before too long again the list will drop one or two drives and things are back to how they've always shown at boot time from the BIOS NOTES neither of these two symptoms affects Win performance at all neither of these two symptoms is exhibited by WinXP running multi-boot on the identical machine In other words when I boot to WinXP I can use its quot restart quot with no problem using the exact same C SBX board and Adaptec card in it Also when I do reboot WinXP repeatedly on each reboot the BIOS list of SATA hard drives shows all three drives So there is or was something about how Win saved data in NVRAM or hardware configuration or something when it shut down and or restarted that was clearly slightly different from how WinXP did those same functions And for me the effect of those differences was to cause my two symptoms described above Well I'm thrilled to report that NEITHER OF THESE TWO SYMPTOMS APPEARS ANY LONGER Just within the past - weeks this has changed and obviously it's only Windows Update that could account for it I've been running with SP installed in Win for a long time now so it's not tied to SP It's something much more recent which has finally fixed this issue Now not only can I quot restart quot perfectly but also at re-boot the BIOS now shows ALL THREE SATA HARD DRIVES always MS has obviously fixed something and Win now behaves exactly like WinXP for me on these matters Also there's yet one other symptom I faced early on with Win and its hard drive quot spin-down after a user-specified period of inactivity quot I'd initially thought this issue may have involved only my SCSI drives and this perhaps implicate just the Adaptec drivers used for my SCSI drives But subsequent experimenting and observation suggested that it also affected SATA drives Turns out NONE OF MY DRIVES were ever going into quot sleep quot spin-down mode as I wanted them to do after -minutes of inactivity I'd even gone to the trouble of using a program named HDDScan which has a function to manually spin-down up drives All I really needed to do was spin a drive down and Win would automatically spin it back up if it was needed Anyway I'd been using this approach for a long time now ever since discovering that for some reason the spin-down up functionality which worked perfectly on my hardware setup in WinXP did not seem to work under Win No matter what tweaks I tried and adjustments to Win power management setup I just couldn't get my drives to sleep ... Hi Looking for insight advice re KB According to Infoworld it was quot Optional quot in May but I was not offered it then This KB3054476 "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional" offered as week it was offered as quot Important quot and quot Recommended quot but only for one of my Win boxes I have read the MS KB article as well as THIS FORUM THREAD the latter of which includes a report of a BSOD due to this particular update However there isn't much out on the web about it And most of the discussion about it is overly technical for me And I am confused as to why it was previously offered as quot Optional quot but now is quot Important quot KB3054476 offered as "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional" or quot Recommended quot I don't think I quot need quot it as I have no webcam on this box And I don't like KB3054476 offered as "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional" to tempt fate by fixing things that are not broken So questions Is it safe to install Is it really necessary important Or would I be OK to hide it Thanks very much in advance

A:KB3054476 offered as "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional"

The status of updates changes with circumstances.
If an update isn't relevant, it won't be offered at all.
If however it's relevant but the related software is not apparently in use, it may be 'optional' - and gravitate to 'Recommended' or 'Important' if the related software is in use.
It can also be promoted through the hierarchy by MS depending on feedback through WU and error-trapped feedback.

If you have (and use) a webcam, then it's probably best to install the update.

The message "Working on updates 12%" has been hanging on the screen for the last 12 hours on my desktop pc.

I had the same problem, though at a different point in the update process, with my laptop.

I had to abandon the update on my laptop and reinstall.

Do I have to go through all that a gain with my Desktop?

I'm very frustrated and thinking of reverting to Windows 7.

Does anyone have some suggestions to correct the stalled update procedure.

Hello! I have a minor problem with one of my customer. Her laptop (asus X53u w/ windows 7 home premium x64) reboots perfectly using the start menu "restart" option.. but when I run windows updates and press its "restart now" button, the screen goes blank as if is shut down and the rest of the hardware is still running (fans on as well as the light on the power button). It occurs right after "Configuring windows updates 30%". The fans are still running, power button light is still on and the screen is shut down...

It is the first time I have this issue... do you guys have any clue on how to troubleshoot this? It only happens with the restart now button after installing windows update.

Thanks in advance

Edit: i need to hold the power button for 4 seconds to get out of that blank screen state

Hello I had Windows Update automatic checking for updates Windows are date" available up Update ..." "There updates - "Windows to no is disabled with the necessary services for Windows update enabled The last update was Windows Update "Windows is up to date" - "There are no updates available ..." sometime back in February of After manually activating Windows Update Windows Windows Update "Windows is up to date" - "There are no updates available ..." Update was still running after minutes I then quit Windows Update and was going to wait till a later time to activate again However after running some system cleaners I tried to activate Windows Update which produced an error message IIRC the error message indicated a program and parameter was required to run Windows Update Current Windows Vista WindowsUpdateagent Version is Vista x Quite a while back I manually fixed Windows Update after it stopped working and has been working correctly up to now This time instead of a manual fix I tried to use MS fix-it program However MS's current link to download the Fix-it program is not an exe file but a cab file uncertain why MS currently has a link to a cab file instead of an exe file Anyway instead of attempting a manual fix I found a MS windows update agent installation for Vista -Bit After re-installation using the Windows Vista x windowsupdate exe file version xxx Windows Update now displays a window with options stating that quot Windows is up to date quot quot There are no updates available for your computer quot If I select quot Check for Updates quot Windows Update continually runs for over mins without any results I was thinking of allowing Windows Update to run for up to several hours to see if there are any results At this point I'm not certain if Windows Update is working as it should or if something is messed up with it's installation There is another windowsupdate agent available online with a different filename for Windows Vista x quot WindowsUpdateAgent -x exe quot Which is version whereas the one I used has a different filename WindowsUpdateAgent- -x exe which should be version MS Fix-it link downloads a non-executable file quot WindowsUpdateDiagnostic diagcab quot so there's not diagnostic exe file to run So is my Windows Vista x installation up to date Windows Update message of quot Windows is up to date quot - quot There are no updates available for your computer quot is correct

Presently, Skype 5.10 is on my computer. But I also have a window's update (Skype 5.10 for Windows (KB2727727)). Problem is that this update won't install and every time I go to shut the computer down, I have to scroll through closing choices (shut down, hibernate, sleep, etc) and as whether or not I want the update installed. As this update can't presently be installed and it's a PITA when going to Sleep as I have to choose between Install Updates and Sleep, how can I get this update to go away without installing it so that I can get to my closing functions without having to muck with Install Update now?

Hello All,

This is yet another issue with Windows Update on 7; I recently (a couple of weeks or so ago) upgraded my father's computer to Windows 7 and he loves it.

However, whenever either of us try and use Windows Update, it sits there for hours and hours on "Installing Updates 1 of 2."

Does anybody have any ideas where I could look as to why this is happening?

I will post more information on this when I can find more detailed account of what's going on with 7.
Thanks,

A:Windows Update on 7 stalls while "Installing Updates (2/3)" on AMD64 m

you could try :-

go to services (click start and type SER

stop windows update service

go to c:/windows/software distribution/data store

empty this folder

restart/start windows update service

open windows update and it should be red indicating never searched for updates
then try again

also check installed programs and make sure what your trying to install hasn't already automatically installed when you first installed Windows 7

just an idea

This is an on-going problem and I am at my wits end.

What I have: Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate SP1, 64bit, no additional software installed since I could never get past the update issue.

The symptom: went attempting to run windows update it says "searching for updates". It never stops "searching for updates" until I close or end the program. I have let it run for 2 days straight.

What I have tried:
1. Did the "clear the cache" fix, (stopped BITS and windows update services, deleted SoftwareDistribution folder, then restarted), no change
2. Attempted to install updates manually, it hangs on "searching for updates on this computer".

3. Even when trying to install the system update readiness tool does not work.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thank you

A:Windows update not working, hangs while "searching for updates"

I decided to start over, even installed a new, factory fresh hard drive (I have planned to do this in the future and thought this would be a good time to do it).
I installed Windows 7 Ultimate, 64bit, SP1 from an original windows disk.
I activated windows successfully and started windows update.
It does the same thing as before, just says "searching for updates" and never does anything else.
Could it be my hardware? I have a good fast internet connection to most sites. Memory tested good.
No driver issues seen.
I did notice when I installed windows, all the window colors were set to red.
I don't remember seeing that before. I changed the color to the default blue color.

Thank you for your continued support.

I've been trying to set up a few second hand laptops for a charity youth club. One went without a hitch, one won't update Windows at all.

It's running Windows 7 SP1, I've tried various fixes but nothing seems to be working.

I've followed the instructions on the post. Attached is my CBS log zip file. I don't have any error codes as it just sits on "Checking for Updates".

Interestingly the first time I ran the SURT it just sat for over 8 hours on "Checking for Updates" as well. Second time, after a power down & reboot it did it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This was meant to be a quick favour & now turning into a long job!

Thanks

Nick

is it a good idea to install the 26 "update for Windows 7" "kbxxxxxxx" updates that sit in the 'optional updates' section of my Windows Update notification bar. are they needed for anything? do they make my computer work better? what are they there for?

A:"Update for Windows 7" (in optional updates section)

Some optional updates are useful and should be installed, some like Bing related items, Silverlight aren't, since you don't mention the KB numbers it's really hard to answer that.

Post a screenshot of them.

Hi everybody I am running in to a problem where the Windows Update is stuck on checking for updates now I have freshly upgraded a Windows machine from Enterprise to Professional with a new product key - which it did work activated as a Genuine But it might not be just the Windows Update any other software would be doing Update "Checking for on stuck Windows updates" the same thing as for Windows Update - checking for updates so I am just wondering if there is a one way click to solve this problem Everything else works except from the Windows Update what is doing is just checking for updates and it hangs on checking for hours and hours - so I had enough and I want to find a best solution that would work Now I am not quite sure if the Windows Update is taking time to get all the updates gathered in or it might be stuck But I don't know I can't really tell on what the computer is doing in the background Windows Update stuck on "Checking for updates" process During the research for finding this solution and I have came up with different solutions but I don't want to risk too much on registry or doing manual servicing including in with deleting a few files from the C drive downloading a few tweakers fixers applications such as Microsoft FixIt - but none of this solved the problem apart from being patient and wait The only thing I haven't done is doing a sfc scannow check disk clean up or reinstall Windows Professional and doing a disk check before startup I just want the Windows Update to work so that the computer is ready to receive updates before June and it can be ready to process and upgrade to Windows if possible This picture below shows the same problem to what is happening right now Thank you for reading Best Regards Ben

Good morning,

I just registered, so I'm not entirely sure how this forum runs. I'm assuming you can see my computer information in my user profile, but please let me know if you need me to post it here again.

When I run Windows Update, it hangs permanently on "Checking for Updates." No error ever displays.

I ran Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [October 2014] from Official Microsoft Download Center according to the Windows Update posting instructions on this forum. It completed, but had no effect on my issue.

I also ran the Windows Update diagnostic from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058. It returned error 0x80070490.

I have attached my CBS file.

Thank you for your help,
Shelli

It looks to me like you've been using either Advanced System Care or Wise software - which has caused some major problems.

A:Windows update continually "checking for updates"

I finally got it to work. I had to go into Services and stop/restart both Windows Update and Windows Module Installer. Then launch windows update again and it showed the updates.

They have to be installed 1 at a time. I tried to do 5 at once when it seemed things were working properly again and Windows took that to mean I wanted all updates installed. Of course it failed again with the "failure to configure updates" and I
was back at square one.

To get into services just hit the windows key and R at the same time. Type services.msc then hit enter. I also set both the Update and Installer to manual. Not sure if that had anything to do with making it work.

Already tried everything I read on a lot of threads here. The Windows Update is stuck at the "green bar"

I'm using Windows 8.1

1) Already used the Microsoft Fixit from this KB topic: How do I reset Windows Update components?
2) Tried all the fixes I could use from this page: https://www.winhelp.us/reinstall-windows-update.html
3) Tried "sfc /scannow"
4) Tried "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth"

Still nothing, the green bar keep going for more than 4/5 hours

Is there anything left to do? Or just re-install? Uninstall/Install windows again?

Hi,
Current issue: Windows 7 sp1 update stuck at "checking for updates" for more than a week
My computer: windows 7 professional sp1 installation originally
Last automatic checked and updated successfully: May 11, 2015
CCleaner cleaned up: once every week
Anti-virus: AVG for more than 10 years

Self - troubleshooting done so far but did not work:
1) CCleaner cleaned up & Disk cleanup under safe mode
2) Reset Update following this instruction: Windows Update - Reset
3) Temporarily turned off AVG anti-virus while checking for update
4) System restored to the earliest restore point: July 15, 2015

Please help.

A:windows 7 sp1 update stuck at "checking for updates"

This is currently a common issue - partly caused by a poor update from MS which slows the process down, and partly caused by throttling of the MS servers.

Simply leave WU to do it's thing overnight - or longer if necessary - it will get there in the end.
If it's still not completed a scan after 24 hours running...
Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

Can you install anything else on your computer?

If not,

Press the Windows key + R to open a Run box.

Copy/Paste the following command:

regedit /e C:\look.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSIServer"

Press Enter.

You won't notice anything. However, it will have created a report on your C drive
named look. Attach that file to your next reply.

Hello again, friends.

Ok so here's my new issue. I got a new hard drive and successfully installed Windows 7 on it. I temporarily slaved the old OS hard drive so that I could copy some files from it because the drive was failing.

My issue is that when I check for updates, it doesn't go beyond the "checking" and it basically times out. Seems odd... has anyone else had this happen and what do I do? You don't think that maybe the computer is confused because the OS still remains on the drive that is temporarily slaved do you? One odd thing is that I checked the update history and clearly some went on there. So I don't know. Help?

You guys rock. Thanks for helping me out with the last issue.

Just finished talking to a Toshiba tech support person I called because my six-week-old Toshiba "Don't 7 Windows updates"! Toshiba says, technician install Satellite L laptop has Toshiba technician says, "Don't install Windows 7 updates"! developed a problem there is a slight delay between keyboard commands and their execution in every program I use regularly Word Outlook Quicken etc For example I'm in Microsoft Outlook and I double-click on the name of a saved task Instead of opening instantaneously as happens on my desktop which has a slower processor less memory and a smaller hard drive I get the hourglass for a second or two before the task opens Or else a dialog box appears asking whether I want to archive my old items in Outlook and when I click the No button the dialog box lingers there for a second before closing Toshiba says this is an issue they've experienced and it is caused by Windows and other quot third-party quot updates using up system resources I should not accept or install those updates They want me to perform an entire reinstall Toshiba technician says, "Don't install Windows 7 updates"! of Windows Home Premium and never allow another update So if the problem is the Windows and other updates then why am I not having the same problem on my desktop computer running Vista but accommodating updates with no problem and if all these updates are not really necessary according to Toshiba then why do companies keep producing them It has taken me weeks to get this laptop customized and configured with the programs and content I need to use on it If what this tech support person tells me is true then will I have this problem on any computer I buy that runs Windows Thanks in advance Joan

A:Toshiba technician says, "Don't install Windows 7 updates"!

Toshiba are talking out of their nether regions.
The first thing you need to check is what's booting at startup - use MSCONFIG for that.
Uncheck anything you *know* you don't use, and list the rest in a reply.
Open Task Manager - what's taking up most resources (enable viewing of processes from all users)?

4GB is quite enough for most purposes.

What Security software is installed? - what different Anti-Virus programs have EVER been installed?

A:"Intel HD graphics" update install crashed the computer

Click Start and right-click Computer then click Properties.

Open Device Manager and double-click Display Adapters, then double-click your graphics adapter.

Click the Driver tab and click the Rollback Driver button to uninstall the updated driver and revert to the original one.

When you have Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) drivers installed they may be set up differently than the manufacturer's drivers, which is where conflicts can arise.

If this doesn't work, boot into Safe Mode and choose System Restore to the point where you updated your graphics driver.

KB3102429 (Aerbaijani Manat and the Georgian Lari currency symbols added) shows as "Important Update" but it is not pre-checked for install on any of my computers as are normally all the other "Important Updates". Anyone know why, or have any issues with this recent end-of-year update (that does not seem so important)?

A:KB3102429 "Important" Update ?

Hi
No I believe it is actually a recommended update which it might show up as important if the box is checked in setting to give you Recommended updates the same way as Important ones,
Uncheck the box and it will appear in the Optional section instead.

Hello all. Last night I shut off my Dell computer with Windows 7 home premium. It started an update that I believe had 29. Later I realized I needed to look at something and turned it back on. It started the "Configuring Windows updates do not turn off your computer" but it has gotten hung up at 41%. The little circle is still spinning but has been like this since 11pm last night. I have not done anything yet.

Thank you for any help you can give me!
Holly

A:Computer hung up on "Configuring Windows updates 41%" since last night

ABout the only thing you can do now is force a shutdown, holding in the power button for about 5-6 seconds.
Boot to Safe Mode, and let it attempt to either repair the system or complete the updates.
Hopefully you'll then be able to boot to normal mode, and install any that didn't work this time around.

To be honest, I just downloaded Windows Update Readiness Tool because my "Turn Windows Feature On or Off" shows up blank every time I open it just like the picture attached.

So, I researched that the way to fix it is by installing Windows Update Readiness Tool, and so, I did. But, when I try to install, it LITERALLY "fails" to do so (as seen on the other pic) . Can anyone help me resolve this problem? I want a concrete answer with steps for me to follow. I don't care however complicated those steps may be, as long as they definitely fix the issue.

Thanks to all who help

Hi,

I've got a Dell netbook with a problem. It's running Win7 Starter. When I go to check for updates, it first wants to install the latest Windows updater, but that fails with error code 80004005. If I try again I get error 800700B7.

After trying system restore and running SFC, which found a trivial (I believe) tcpmon.ini error, I finally opted to restore the system to factory condition. Surprise, the exact same error persists.

I can do a lot of updating via local file stores, but I want this machine to be updateable on a continuing basis.

Also, I have a Win7 installation disk. When I tried a repair install, it tells me that the existing system is a later version and it refuses to install.

The only thing I have left is a fresh install from the disk. But I have no idea what is going on here.

A:Restart Your Computer To Finish Installng Important Updates Probs

Hi jimerb,

I don't know how to stop the the box from popping up after an update.

You might consider manually updating. I have always manually updated rather than set to auto because I like to see what it being installed before hand. If you choose to manually update just check on the second Tuesday every month (more often if you'd like) for any updates. It's a little more hassle but when you do it like that at least you won't be in the middle of something very important when it wants to reboot.

Sorry for not directly answering your question, but doing it this way you won't be interrupted if/when it needs to reboot. That seemed to be the biggest problem you're having and this will fix it.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I also clicked on the "more information" for the Microsoft Knowledge Base, but nothing came up there either.

A:A "non-existent" Windows update ("KB3024777") even Google can't find

Also note that it can't be unchecked/deselected.

Edit: It seems this update removes kb3004394 and vanish without a trace (except in History).
Neither seems to be available in the uninstall list afterwards.

I want to stop Windows 10 from installing on my Windows 7 partition.

I already have Windows 10 on another partition. But now in Windows Update I now see "Upgrade to Windows 10". How do I get rid of this and stop the Windows 10 Upgrade in Windows Update from ever appearing again.

I had previously unreserved my Windows 10 upgrade in the Windows 10 notification app, but I guess that didn't work. I'm afraid if I shutdown or restart my Windows 7 installation now the upgrade will occur.

I know this was asked before but I was unclear on exactly what to do. Any replies would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Stuck in Windows 7 session,
Tom

Windows Update spins forever on "checking for updatse". The Win Update Troubleshooter gives error 0x8024402C. I have tried numerous fixes including some KBs - no success.

Today I tried steps 1 and 2 that you recommend should be run before posting on this problem.

1. The SURT installer has been spinning > 3 hrs on "searching for updates on this computer".

2. I ran "sfc /scannow". It says "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them" and refers to CBS.log - but that is an empty file.

Can anyone advise me?

After a Windows update and restart the following problem appeared nbsp When the Windows machine is started it boots correctly then immediately goes to a blue quot Configuring Windows quot screen followed after a couple of minutes by the quot Failure Configuring Windows Update Reverting Changes quot screen After around hours this eventually changes to quot Shutting Changes Do "Failure Locked out Windows - Update - off..." Configuring switch by computer not Reverting of down quot This has been left overnight and still says quot Shutting down quot During start up I don't get to the log-on screen and don't have access to any settings A shared partition on the machine is visible from other computers and a SQL database can be accessed during the Reverting Changes stage I can restart the machine successfully in Safe Mode and have tried a clean boot Chkdsk has been run Microsoft Help says use FixIt but FixIt doesn't run in Safe Mode and I can't access the machine after a normal boot to run it then Diagnostics doesn't work in Safe Mode For the same reasons I can't turn off Windows Update or attempt a reinstall An attempt to restore to a previous version doesn't work giving an x error code Reinstalling the OS from disk seems like overkill and a huge investment in time bringing back up to date and reinstalling software Surely there must be a way of bypassing or deleting the failed update or the service that is trying to configure it Our small business is reliant on this machine so we are quite desperate for a solution

Hi,
for half a year Windows Update doesn't find any updates on my system, I had to install them manually. I set up the system new, same problem. I installed about 170 updates manually (silent batch installation). Automatic Windows Update still searches for a
day and more, doesn't find anything and the Windows Update Service is blocking the system with constant processor usage of 50%. Now there is a rollup that shall fix this problem but it cannot be installed. I tried to install it manually. Error 2149842967 "This
update is not compatible with your computer" (translated from German). It is the correct msu-file for my system Windows 7 SP1 Professional 64 bit.
What may be the problem and what can I do to resolve it?
Thank you in advance.

I finished updating my Lenovo Thinkpad W510 with the 2nd Tuesday updates and doing some other updates to it. I clicked on the shutdown, and all of a sudden I get the "Getting Windows ready .. Don't turn off your computer" message. Since I just completed the Cumulative Update installation, there should be nothing to update at this point. Also I have Windows Update configured to not to automatically download and install updates. I have no idea what it is trying to do at this point. Can I hard shut it down?

JohnD

EDIT: Never mind. After 40 minutes, it finally shut down. I have no idea what it was doing.

I double-click and get "search" instead of "open"--only when I click a disk, like Hard Drive C: or Floppy A: or CD F: and so on.

It didn't used to do this, so I must've inadvertently changed some setting somewhere, but darned if I can find it now.

Any ideas?
