Hard drive short check dst fail

Q: Hard drive short check dst fail

HP Notebook 15-ac121dx
Windows 10

I know my hard drive is failing. I cannot boot my computer tried every method. It's in the automatic repair loop. I'm going to have to send it in I'm pretty sure of it. However I was able to access the notepad through the command prompt and noticed that I can still see my files in different folders. Is there a way for me to back up my files? Is there a way I can access a program from command prompt and transfer files? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Preferred Solution: Hard drive short check dst fail

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

try using ubuntu
------------------------------------------------------------------------

UBUNTU Stand Alone DVD

Note the latest version of UBUNTU needs a DVD to use and boot from

if you only have CDs then you can use an older version, version 10 or 11 from this archive list
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/

It may be possible to boot from another Operating System
This will at least test the Hardware and also see if you can see the Harddrive and possibly get any of your data off.

If you have another PC with a DVDwriter and spare DVD
Download the ISO http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

UBUNTU version 14 http://releases.ubuntu.com/14.10/
For almost all PCs. The following ISO 32Bit image will work on most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors.
http://releases.ubuntu.com/14.10/ubuntu-14.10-desktop-i386.iso

You can also run from a USB device now - if the Machine supports booting off a USB Stick
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows

A tutorial is here BUT this is for version 9 - so the start up options are slightly different
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/

click on the image "download ubuntu"
Select a location
then begin download
Save the file onto your PC ? remember where you saved it ? so you can find it again to create the image bootable DVD.

You do NOT copy the ISO file onto a DVD - you have to use the ISO to create a bootable DVD
The DVD creator software you have on the PC may have an option to create an image from an ISO

If not - use this free program http://www.imgburn.com/ - Choose the option Write image file to disc
Be very careful when installing , as imgburn now includes and installs a load of unwanted programs, so make sure you read each page during the installation and decline them ALL
OR
you can use this stand alone ISO Burner to burn the ubuntu onto DVD ftp://terabyteunlimited.com/burncdcc.zip

If you need any help burning these images to disk, see the Image Burning Guide, from the ubuntu website.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

When the UBUNTU DVD boots - you will see a screen - with Language on the left panel and two option images labelled

== > Try ubuntu
== > Install ubuntu
You can try Ubuntu without making any changes to your computer, directly from this DVD

Use "Try ubunto" ONLY. This option will run from the DVD and "will not" install onto your harddrive
Be careful, if you do install onto the PC - you will wipe the data and software OFF your hard drive.., you have been warned, only use the option "try ubuntu"
Now you should see a UBUNTU desktop
This at least proves the main parts of the PC are working
NOTE: if you only see a black screen - then this is a known issue, and can be resolved by using the following:-
On some hardware configurations, you need to set some kernel parameters for ubuntu to boot or work properly. A common one is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot in to a black screen or corrupted splash, acpi_osi= to fix lcd backlight and other problems.
full details are here
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132

If you press the F6 key, a menu at the bottom will open allowing you to set kernel options with the space bar or enter key. You can close the menu with escape key and resume booting by selecting the option ?try ubuntu without installing? (please note that session does allow you to install ubuntu once you found the kernel options cured your problem).Click to expand...

If everything worked OK and you should be on the ubuntu desktop

Version 14.10
To see the harddrive
on the left hand side menu
look for

System
the icon = Picture of a harddrive
click once

A window will open and show all the files that are on your harddrive

to find all your data files
XP look in ?documents and settings? under the user name you had on the PC
Vista/Windows 7/windows 8 look in ?user? under the user name you had on the PC

Now if you have a USB flash drive or external harddrive ? you should be able to copy your data from the harddrive onto the USB device

Also across the top of the screen are a number of icons, one will look like a segment - click on that icon, and you should see the wireless networks available
If you can use wireless - this again proves wireless is working on the PC

----------------------------------------------------------
Version 14.10

to check the Disk Intergrity
Beware this utility can wipe all your data off the harddrive - so proceed with caution, you have been warned

The top icon is search >>> click on that icon and search for Disk Utility
The Disk Devices are listed >>> click on the main drive
on the right, click on the cog >>> choose "smart data and self-tests"

Here you will see the status of the disk:
how long its been powered on
If the self-test completed OK
and a self-assessment : "threshold not exceeded"
and an overall assessment : "Disk is OK"

Start Self-test - note this takes some time to run
There are three types of self-tests that a device can execute (all are safe to user data):

short - (runs tests that have a high probability of detecting device problems)
extended - (or Long; a short check with complete disk surface examination)
conveyance - (identifies if damage incurred during transportation of the device)

When you execute these tests, you?ll see a progress meter, on the main utility page.

Hi I'm new to the forums so I hope this is the right place to post this nbsp But anyways I basically dropped my HP Notebook -f Fail? DST Check Drive Short Hard dx and now it won't boot Hard Drive Short DST Check Fail? When I turn it on it goes to the loading screen for a few seconds and then goes to a blank black screen and after a long while a blue screen that has an 'Unmountable Boot Volume' error Sometimes it starts and says 'Preparing Automatc Repair' but only for a few seconds again then it goes back to the black screen and the same error I saw some tutorials but it involved me getting a bootable CD or USB drive and I tried that and it still won't work It just makes the loading screen stay on a little longer then goes back to the error So I ran a System Quick Check and it failed the Hard Drive Short DST check I don't know what any of this means do I need a new laptop nbsp

A:Hard Drive Short DST Check Fail?

It appears the impact of dropping your computer damaged the hard drive. The Hard Drive Short  DST Check Fail error is an indication that the hard drive has failed or is about to fail. You will need to replace the hard drive with a like unit and use your HP Recovery Media to return the computer to a factory like state. If you didn't create your HP Recovery Media when you first setup your computer, you will have to purchase this media from HP. Please see USB - Windows 10 64b Recovery Kit to order the media or contact HP Customer Support to purchase the medai, If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Please click the White KUDOS "Thumbs Up" to show your appreciation

Hey all I'm technologically challenged and this is my first time posting on the forum so lemme know if I miss anything....Like the subject says my notebook was freezing and running slowly I didn't know what was happening but long story short I can't get past the boot up screen anymore with HP logo and I ran diagnostic and got hard drive short and long dst failed. I'm pretty frustrated cause my laptop is less than 2 yrs old and my warranty expired how can I replace the damaged hard drive and what exactly should I buy? Also will my files be lost?

A:Hard drive long and short dst fail

A retail laptop/mobile 2.5" SATA hard drive can be used.Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, etc. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. Sorry to say files also die with a hard drive. Best practice with any computer is an external USB hard drive to back up files.

Hi, i have hp pavilion g6 laptop and its upgraded from windows 8 to 8.1 then windows 10.  From last few days i was getting "Memory_Management", "Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error" and so many other errors with blue screen. Due to this i have to power off the system from main power button by holding for few seconds. Now i was getting hang problem. I saw in task manager that DISK UTILIZATION was 100%. I did a hardware test where i got below results : HARD DRIVE SHORT DST Check : WARNING HARD DRIVE Optimized DST Check  : FAILEDFAILURE ID: 9U3UWX-6KT85B-MFPWWJ-61Q003 Can anybody tell me how to resolve this or i need to replace the hard drive. -ThanksPankaj

A:Hard Drive Short DST Check : WARNING and Optimized DST Check...

Yes you need to replace the hard drive. Since you have upgraded to Windows 10 it is very easy to get recovery media directly from the Microsoft Media Creation Tool. For most people, the problem is not physically swapping out the hard drive, but restoring the operating system since they do not have recovery disks. Post back if you want a service manual and/or video showing the replacement, purchase options for a new hard drive and step-by-step for restoring Windows 10. We would need the full model...g6-????

Had this laptop for about 6 years, had a few issues in the past, but nothing major like this. After, I ran a system dianostic, the result shown that the Hard drive short DST failed. Not totally sure how to do a recovery, I do have the Recovery Discs, so I searched up how to run the discs; turned on the system- press f11-  window loading files- window starting- then it just stuck on a window blue screen with nothing but the cursor. Can I even use the Recovery Discs? I want to replace the old HDD with a new SSD, but I'm not sure if I have to install a new OS or can I recover the old hard drive OS and transfer to the SSD?

A:Hard Drive failure (Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed)

DST:Fail means  the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

Hi I been using my laptop as usual today and all of a sudden a notification popped up saying hard drive failure imminent. I restarted the laptop, pressed f2 and ran a system test. Everything in the test passes expect from the Hard drive short dst check, which failed.Failure ID: 0SG2J1-7K289U-XD7WLJ-60VW03I'm not sure why this has occurred. I regular run virus scans and defrag the hard drive. The hard drive is 1TB and around 100GB is used. The laptop is only 2 years old and ran out of warranty around April/May (typical). I don't have any recovery disc or back ups, is the laptop now unusable? I try to boot up but the laptop either freezes on login or on desktop. I have all my uni work, including my dissertation report on there, please help.ThanksDale

Hi, Sadly to say, the HDD on your machine failed. The following link shows its specs:          http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c03663774 You can replace larger (capatity) and faster HDD. Any standard 2.5" SATA HDD on the market today can do the job. You need Recovery media to rebuild your machine. Did you create one ? Otherwise, please try:              http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph07143 Regards.

Stop using the laptop. Replace the hard drive with a new one. Get a SATA to usb adapter to connect the old drive (which you will remove) to another computer to try to salvage data. There is a good chance data is still recoverable this way.

An issue I had resolved a few months ago has begun occuring again wherein the laptop has difficulty loading things when started up and soon after crashes and has to be restarted I assume this means the hard drive has failed again and so I have no doubts about how to resolve this but I am posting this query to ask Why Why has a laptop I have had for not even a year DST short failure... drive again. Hard check at this point already had the same problem occur twice even with replacing the part that broke the first time I'm willing to assume it's something to do with excessive use as I will admit it is switched for a Hard drive short DST check failure... again. good part of most days often for several hours as I play games on Steam on it I do not currently plan to have the hard drive replaced again as this is clearly an issue that is going to keep occuring the way things are and so I may as well get a Hard drive short DST check failure... again. PC that won't break every time a gust of wind hits it Any information on why this is occuring and how it could potentially be prevented in the future is appreciated particularly if it provides a solution that doesn't involve paying an extortionate amount of money

Hi @Himanshu9001, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion Notebook and getting the start up error message failure ID. This error is DST Short Test Failure code. What that means is your Hard drive could be failing. I recommend  the first thing you should do is back-up all your personal files etc as soon as you can. Wondering if maybe reseating the Hard Drive would help. After you reseat it I would run the Hardware Diagnostics again. Please get back to me how this goes. If this post helps you to resolve the issue you can click the Thumbs up icon to show gratitude! Thanks.

When i did the hard drive short and optimized dst chech in the component test to check whether hard disk is functioning well by using HP PC HARDWARE DIAGNOSTICS UEFI in my hp pavilion 15 -e009tu laptop it showed "warning " for both short and optimized checks. My hard disk was replaced fiew weeks before because of some issues. If warning is there... what to do... ?

A:Hard Drive Short and Optimized DST Check : WARNING

Hi Gameji.... Welcome aboard... I would suggest to be cautious and proceed as following:- Backup ur essential data immediately on to an external drive.Check for the manufacturer of the HardDisk using Control Panel>>Device ManagerGo online at the manufacturer's web site and look for their diagnostic tools; it must be something like SMART check utility.Altrnatively u may download following, run CrystalDiskInfo, see what is shows for smart data, this is a portable version that does not install anything on your PC, just runs from the folder you unzip it to.Crystal Disk Info.zipFind out the exact cause of the warning and proceed as deem appropriate...Please let me know if u feel stuck or in case some problem Hope this helps.... Best Regards... Moodi

First off I have a HP 2000 Notebook PC with Windows 8 and I used Internet Explorer 10.

Processor Name : AMD E-300APU with Radeon ™ HD Graphics.

A few days ago, my computer started getting slower & slower, not responding, freezing up and even going to a blue screen before coming back to the page I was at.

So I put it in Safe Mode with Networking and ran Malwarebytes full scan - nothing.

Then I hit F2 at reboot and ran some of the tests on there - Battery was Okay, memory was okay, but this one failed :

Hard Drive Short DST Check - Software Error

Failure ID : RSG080-6P579C-MFGJXG-60VS03
Product ID : D1E80UA#ABA

Does this mean I need to update with windows update, that there isn't enough memory or does it mean my Hard Drive needs to be replaced? This laptop is only 1-1 1/2 years old....

A:Hard Drive Short DST Check Failed - Software Error?!

Your hard drive is probably failing. I would get your important data off it as soon as possible. After your important data is off download Seatools for Windows and do a diagnostic to confirm the hard drive failure.

A:Hard Drive short DTS check failure code meaning?

Hi, The  error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test ( DST ) and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.  This is also consistent with the boot issue you describe. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know - include the full Model No. and Product No. of your 15 series notebook - see Here for a further explanation. Regards, DP-K

A:Disk Read Error on boot, Hard Drive Short DST Check fails

The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced.  A retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used-Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, etc. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Media to install Windows. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. Your model is not one of the easiest to replace hdd on but the Maintenance & Service Guide will help you or your chosen repair shop.http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04438537

So this really irritates me because I just spent hundreds of dollars sending my laptop to HP last year because the hard drive completely failed. I have a 1TB hybrid hard drive and 22Gb solid state used for caching.  When I booted up my computer Intel Rapid Storage Technology said there was an issue.  When I opened it, it says that the status of: SATA disk (932 GB)(System) Accelerated, is Failed.  My SATA_Array_0001 22GB is fine though.  So I ran a System Quick Test, everything passed except Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: Q4MP7Q-6RA82U-MFGJWK-60W303 This is weird because other than the computer telling me there is something wrong every time I restart it, It seems to run just fine.  Im just worried because I don't want it to randomly die on me one day.

A:SATA disk failed and Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed

Hi there @nmulji,  Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and understand that the Hard Drive in your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook PC failed the Short DST Check.  SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent. Have you tried to Restore the BIOS? If not, please try this step first. Then, just to be on the safe side, back up your data that way it does not get lost. However, there might be certain conditions that cause a hard drive failure message to display when a problem does not exist (a false positive). To fix false positive hard drive errors, please try updating the hard drive firmware. You can check whether an update is available by going to the  Get software and drivers page. You will need to put in your Model Number and then click the links that pertain to the computer configuration and see if a hard drive update is available.  You could also try to do a  Disk Defragment to consolidate files and move them to another section of the drive where errors are less likely to occur. Did this reply resolve your issue or answer your question? If yes, then please share the good news! Let others know this reply was helpful by clicking the Accept as Solution button. You can also show your appreciation by clicking the Thumbs Up. If you require further assistance, I would be more than happy to continue to help you. Please re-post with the results of the troubleshooting. Thanks!

A:Windows XP Crash Issues - Hard Drive fail, start up fail

Hi there
So what I gather is that you now cannot start your computer up at all, due to this issue. I'm actually unsure of the problem, it sounds to me like a Virus has been at your computer. It can't really be a hardware issue I don't think... I mean it is possible that what could have been happening is that your computer (Desktop or Laptop?) is overheating and its been damaged because of that... But that wouldn't really make sense, and also having Custom Built a computer I'm sure you'd have been smart enough to install a thoroughly capable cooling system.
It sounds to me like your hard drive has been corrupted though, BSOD usually means a pretty big issue. Thats why I was thinking hardware problem to begin with, you don't often get it for Virus's.
A couple of things we need to know:
Do you have any sort of Anti-Virus installed? If so, which one? How frequently did it scan? Did you find any virus's?
Also, how far into the boot process does the computer get before it loops? Are you able to enter BIOS settings before Blue Screen comes up and it loops? What happens when it loops?
And do you have a startup / boot disk for your computer. You certainly should do.

Hi, The 24 character error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. As your notebook shipped with Windows 10, it is probably still under warranty, so contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. Regards, DP-K

Hi nbsp As stated I have an HP envy laptop that I purchased year ago Just days ago my warranty has ended At the same point in time I was also trying to roll back to a previous windows install as there was a pesky app that was installed when I lend the laptop to my friend When I got it back it works just fine but it had that malware in it that I want to remove nbsp So I fired up system restore and go on restoring It finished doing so until nbsp it restarts When it restarts I was stuck in the loading screen with the HP logo for hours to which I decide to fire up the restore through the recovery media All works well until I got stuck in the installation I got stuck at When I searched on the internet why the reason might be because the wi-fi adapter is still on I am able to open it SM... Long Short DST check but Disk DST and passed Hard failed, up and take it off for a moment But because I need to go to work I decided against it I turned the laptop off and set off nbsp When I got back I can't even let it proceed to the installation saying that there's an issue with teh windows install and it needs to reboot Did that same thing several times and nothing happened nbsp Then I decided to go to BIOS and do the hard disk check It passed the SMART test but failed the Short DST as well as Long DST It produced the error code nbsp MFUC T- RG K-CD WMG- DK nbsp Is it possible for me to resolve the issue by my own through another reinstall Or is the HDD really is ruined If this is the case I'm probably just going to go ahead and replace it with an SSD

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power AdapterStep 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 SecondsStep 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media) Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files. Kyle, welcome to the forum. This error message is telling you that your hard drive has failed.  Your only option is to replace it.  You can test it further using the SMART test from the BIOS.  When you replace it you should buy one the same size or larger.  If you didn't backup your personal data, you will not be able to retreive it.  You should begin doing this immediately after you replace the drive. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Hi,

I recently aquired a new molex-sata adapter for adding a second HDD to my computer, but when I plugged it in and turned the PC on, it won't power up. Without either hard drive plugged into the power supply, the PC will start but obviously go no further, but with either hard drive plugged in the computer simply won't start.

I've tried with three molex-sata adapters now and none of them will make it work, so I was wondering if it is likely that the new adapter has ruined my hard drive? If not then any tips for fixing it?

Thanks very much

Hi,            The failure ID refers to Hard disk drive failure. If the unit is under warranty, then you can call the HP Support to get the Hard disk drive replaced if not you have to get the Hard disk drive replaced yourself and then reinstall the operating system using recovery disk.

Hello there! My computer recently started rebooting (BSOD) nonstop after turning it on, and it won't even go into Safe Mode. After running a system quick check, I received a message stating Hard Drive Short DST: Failed. With this message, I assume I need to replace my hard drive. I'm not sure where the best place to look for a new laptop hard drive is and how to find one on the HP store. Recovering potentially lost data is also a concern. What's the best way to go about replacing the drive and attempting to recover what was on it?

A:HP envy dv6 Hard Drive Short DST: Failed

You can use any manufacturer's hard drive. HP uses Toshiba, Seagate, etc in their laptops-they do not make their own. Western Digital is a popular replacement. Best Buy, Staples even Wal Mart carries hard drives. Just be sure to get a 2.5 " hard drive for laptops not a 3.5" desktop hard drive.Example:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8516564&CatId=1277 As to recovering files you may be able to do that by installing the old hard drive into a usb enclosure then plug it into usb port of a working machine. If the hard drive has any life left in it you should be able to browse it and copy files over to hard drive of host machne.Example:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3195233&CatId=2781

HP diagnostics returned error code 9lhvwc-5rg85u-mfh15f-60t903 during a hard drive short self test this evening. Prior to the test, the disk drive was working very slowly, as if it had trouble reading data. I am able to log in with windows in it's normal mode, but the drive performs poorly. Safe mode is better. I own an HP dv7-6175us with serial number 5ch134ijx7.

A:Hard Drive failure during short test

I suspect it's an issue with the header, because the disk drive was also clicking, and it was the click you hear when the accelerometer halts the hard drive. I suspect it's impact/shock damage. It was repeatedly clicking for about 5 time before I shut it down manually.

Bought this Pavilion 17t in December of 2014.  Upgraded to Windows 10 about 6 months ago.  Just last week the laptop got stuck in an automatic repair loop. I tried a hard reboot and that didn't work.  I ran the diagnostics test and got a Hard Drive Short DST check Failed.  Failure ID Q4JF9G-7G189F-MFPV7A-60SU03  Product ID J7B57AV.   Does this mean my hard drive is failing after such a short time?  Is there any solution other than an expensive repair?

A:HP Pavilion 17t Hard Drive Short DST failed

Yes unfortunately it means the hard drive must be replaced. If you are willing to do it yourself, hard drives are probably not as expensive as you fear. We would need your precise model number to provide the correct manual and instructions and likely a video. Since you had Windows 10 installed and activated you can use media downloaded for free direct from Microsoft.

Hello Yee, welcome to Seven Forums!

Have a look at Option Four in the tutorial at the link below to see if the "Set Partition as Primary" option is available; there's also a link in the same tutorial for the info on creating a Windows recovery disk.

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.  Yes, the files can most likely still be retrieved.  To do this, you would need to take the hard drive out of the notebook and connect it directly to a desktop computer or insert it into an external hard drive dock/cradle and browse to the files you need.  If you feel this is too difficult then you could take it to a local computer repair store and they'll be able to do this for you (for their fee). Once you've got the old drive out, you can have another put in and recover the operating system using the HP Recovery Media and it'll put the notebook back into the same condition as it came out of the box.

So i got this hp 2000 notebook pre installed win 8 from a friend. I did some HP tests and shows HD short DST Failure.
I was able to refresh the pc and it does run per sa but constant always getting dst failures. So i assume its dying. I bought a new hard drive for the unit. Now if i put it in, will windows setup pull the product key from the bios? I put windows 8 on a usb key. Can anyone guide me through the process?

A:hp 2000 notebook Hard Drive DST short failure, Reinstall?

Hi, if the PC came originally with Windows 8 preinstalled the product key is embedded in the BIOS so it would be detected automatically. Here is a great tutorial how to install Windows 8 Clean Install - Windows 8.

Good luck, werty

When i'm using my computer and sometimes on start up my hard drive will make this repeating ticking sound...(tick, tick, tick, tick) and freeze up the computer.

Then when the hard drive stops the sound the computer will return to its normal state.

Is this a hard drive fail? Will i have to buy a new one?

SO i go and schedule a disk check.

Restart my computer and some thing comes up with a list of hardware and at the bottom it says HARD DRIVE FAILURE IS IMMANENT! BACK UP FILES AND REPLACE THE DRIVE!

IM like wtf?? no i only had this computer for a year.

So i go and boot then check files for error. a whole bunch of stuff it corrects. But still an immanent failure.

So im hoping i can stop this from happening you think? Is there anyway i can stop it from happening or am i doomed???

My father recently bought some more RAM (4 gb for a total of 6gb). Since he put it in his PC has been acting funny. Now he is getting hard drive fail messages during the boot up. His HD then started making clicking noises which in my past experience means the HD is done. Now he can't boot up at all. I didn't think RAM could do that. The RAM is identical to the other RAM, they're both DDR2 and both PC5200. His HP is upgradeable to 8gb of RAM.

Thanks for any help.

A:Can RAM cause a hard drive to fail?

AFAIK, not likely.
It might just be coincidence.

I have an Acer Aspire 5534 laptop, Comes on goes to Windows Splash screen, freezes, ran a hard drive diagnoses, failed Linear Verify, SMART Self Test Long, and Read Surface Scan. I know that the hard drive is on its last leg, but as a quick fix, can I chkdsk/r and reinstall OS. Do I have other options besides new drive and about how long before the need for new drive?

A:Hard Drive Fail

1. Reinstallng or attempting to reinstall the OS will serve no useful purpose
It may well result in complete failure due to the apparent unhealthy state of the hard drive

2. Take the drive out, connect to another computer and copy whatever you can from your personal data

3. If you have the means to install whatever OS it is - do so on a new laptop drive and then copy back your personal data

4. HOW LONG - the question is as opened ended as asking when will a light bulb - blow

5. After you have recovered what you can and I advise NOT BEFORE you may then having returned the drive to the laptop run a chkdsk /r on the drive from either windows or if it is 7 a cmd prompt from the disc or from the F8 menu and see if by chance you can then boot from it

6. If you are lucky enough to get a boot into windows and using then the new laptop drive connected usb to the laptop you may then try a clone using this
http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/free-backup-software.htm

7. If the clone works you will not lose anything

IF you attempt the chkdsk /r before recovering whatever you can - there is a chance albeit slight that the drive may just fail.

A:USB Hard Drive Fail

Hi there,

Make sure the drives out of the pc.

Start (Bottom left)
Right click "My Computer"
Go to "Manage" (This will open a new window)
On the left hand side about halfway down you will see "Device Manager" give it a click.
Now at the top of the window select "View" and make sure "Show Hidden devices" has a tick next to it.

Now expand "Disk Drives" by clicking the + next to it.
Find the name of your usb drives and right click them and go to uninstall.

Reboot your computer, plug the drive in after you login.

The above isnt a gaurenteed solution, so let us know if it works or not.

My laptop will not boot, the screen comes on and the dell logo is there and the lights flash around the like it's trying to boot and then it goes dark and that's it.  When I check the setup it can find the hard drive, it lists it by the HDD.  When I run diagnostics it fails with short test unsuccessful.  I have reseated the hard drive and tried to reboot,  but it is not working.  I'd like to run chkdsk /r from the command console like I saw in one of the possible solutions, but I don't know how to get to the command console.  I'm thinking I need a new hard drive but I would like to try everything to save this one first.

You can't simply boot Windows from a hard drive from another machine. Windows is configured with drivers that match the other system and it is expecting that hardware when you boot off of the new drive.

You can try booting to safe mode with the new drive or doing a startup repair. Another option is to put the drive back in the other machine and use sysprep:

I've had three hard drives fail on me (well, the third is going to happen any day soon ;P ). The first two were because bad sectors appeared all over them, the third sounds awfully clicky with grinding noises. The less you use it, the less risk of it dying sooner. Windows kept telling me there were serious problems with it and instant shutdowns occured in quicker and quicker succession. Try to get your data out of there as soon as possible, whether online backup or external hard drive. also, if you can, buy a small capacity hard drive to replace it with to tide you over until you would be in a position to buy a replacement.

Hi,

I just tried to install two new internal HDDs into my vista desktop, the first (given to me by a friend) went in perfectly but the second seems to have caused my computer to crash. When I attempt to turn on my computer now I get shown a blue error screen. I have tried going into safe mode, with no luck, tried booting directly from a windows 7 disk, with no luck, and removed all the new hardware, still with no luck.

No matter what I do I cannot get the computer to boot. I have handed the computer over to the Tech Department at my university but for some ridiculous reason they are not allowed to do anything I have not already tried.

Does anyone have any advice? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm still able to turn my computer on and windows appears and it seems like it works fine for about 5 seconds. I run a Dell Latitude D600, so I don't have a windows disk as the computer is older.

Any advice would greatly appreciatted.

A:DST Short Satus: Fail? please help!

bad hdd. replace with any 2.5 pata drive less than 137gb. is a sure thing. should be attached on the side with 1 screw holding down the caddy to the base. could go higher in size like a 250gb but with out knowing if you've updated your bios to support the larger size =/
good luck

A:Loads of TMP files in c:\windows\system32 - Hard Drive fills up in short space of tim

H again,

Found another post that said to delete all files in the prefetch directory. One I found there was FAD052.TMP (with some before and after it). A searhc on this file led me to loads of spyware forums.

Anyway, I deleted the prefecth dir, and I'll keep monitoring it. See what ends end there after a few days.

Keep you posted
Johan

Suddenly my dell latitude d620 stopped working. Message when I boot the laptop is "Start DST Short Test - no hard drive detected - error 1000-0141".

I removed the hard drive (hitachigst travelstar) and placed another one from another laptop. The laptop worked well. I placed the 1st hard drive in the 2nd laptop. I got the same error as above.

So is something wrong with the hard drive???

When I shake it gently, I can hear a small part moving inside. This doesnt happen in the 2nd hard drive. So is something broken too?

"...when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth" (Sherlock Holmes)

Seems to be the case. But don't worry too much, hard disks are inexpensive and easily replaced.

We have recently had two hard drives fail, both purchased and installed in the same PC at the same time. They failed about a month apart. Is there anything out there that can be used to monitor the drives to detect upcoming failures? I have been looking at diagnostic software called Active Smart. I downloaded a 30 day trial version but purchase costs approx $30.

Thanks

A:Hard Drive Diagnostics - can something tell you when a drive is about to fail?

Most bios setups have a setting to enable for S.M.A.R.T. Check to see if you have that option.

However, that many drive failures so close together would lead me to believe that you have other issues, maybe the drives are too close together and getting too hot?

I have a Fujitsu MPG3102AT 10.24 Mg hard drive that failed. I fdisk, but when it came to formating it goes to like 15% and then the format fails. Could this be a virus? Its a fairly new hard drive and if it can be fixed I would like to save the price of bying a new one. I have been told that I have to do a "Low Level Format" could anyone tell me how to do that or direct me to someplace that can or If you Have any more relevant Info On this subject it would really be appreciated

Hello,
I awoke this morning to a box that appears to be from windows stating that my hard drive is about to fail and that I should back up my data immediately (done).  After further research though it appears that there are also viruses that mimic this alert for different purposes.  Is there a way we can scan/search my system and determine if my hard drive is really about to fail or whether I have a virus?

Thanks,

Marc

A:Hard Drive Fail Warning or Virus?

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Post all logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed. Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean. My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.   Use the Windows Error Checking utility (Check Disk), with the options to fix file system errors and scan the disk surface for errors, attempt recovery of data and repair the disk: Click the "Windows Orb" Start button, then click Computer. Right-click on the drive that you wish to check > Properties > Tools tab In the "Error checking" section, click on Check now. Place a checkmark in both boxes > Start. If the disk you have chosen is the Windows system disk: A message will notify you that a restart is necessary ask "Do you want to check for hard disk errors the next time you start your computer?". Click Schedule disk check > OK and close all windows. Re-start the computer. The disk will be checked when the system boots. This will take some time to run and at times may appear stalled but just let it run. When the disk check is complete, the system will re-start automatically and load Windows.A log of the disk check is recorded only if the scheduled re-start is used, and only for drives on the same HDD as the Operating System. To open Event Viewer and view the log: Click the "Windows Orb" Start button -> type "eventvwr" without the quotes -> press the key. The Event Viewer window will open. In the left pane, expand "Windows Logs" and then click on Application. In the right pane, at the top, click on the column heading Source to sort the list alphabetically. Look in the Source column for "Wininit", with an entry corresponding to the date and time of the disk check. Click on that Wininit entry to select it. On the top main menu, click Action > Copy > Copy Details as Text. Paste the contents into your next reply.

A:Primary hard drive fail, on boot up

I would connect the drive as a slave to a working system. Now run the drive maker's diagnostic on the drive. You download this from whomever made the drive; ie WD, Maxtor, Seagate, etc.

In addition you need to make sure the jumpers are set correctly. If these are ide type drives and one of them is a WD, there are two different jumper settings for WD drives. It depends on whether the drive is a single device on the cable or a multi device.

Hi.
Upon switching my PC on at work this morning, it failed to boot. Instead it lets out a high pitched intermittent beep for about a second at a time. No picture on the monitor. All power lights are on.
It's an old Pentium 3 (probably 600Mhz), 128Mb RAM, W98SE.

Fortunately I have backups from noon yesterday, so I won't lose an awful lot if it's dead.

I've opened it up, and apart from it being thick of dust, it seems ok - the leads are all in place, nothing's hanging out or damaged. The processor fan spins happily, so the power supplies obviously ok.

Oh hang on, I've fixed it...
The memory strip wasn't quite snug. Bit weird - nothing should have dislodged it.

Ha ha
Strange thread.

Hi Guys,

Let me start by warning you that I am not a whiz when it comes to computers!

My Dell Dimension 4600 has been getting a little cantankerous of late, to the point where it failed to boot up today (I'm on the laptop!).

I've looked for solutions, and the end result after getting a "blue screen" with an "Unmountable Boot Volume" message is the following:

IDE Hard Drive Diagnostics
Primary SATA
Drive 0: No device
Secondary SATA
Drive 0: No device

Primary IDE
Drive 0: WDC WD600BB-75CAAO - Fail. Return Code: 7
Drive 1: Maxtor 6E040l0 - Pass

etc...

Is this the dreaded hard drive crash?

Any advice gratefully received!

A:Dell IDE Hard Drive Diagnostic: Fail!

It is either a dead hard drive or the motherboard has stopped talking to it. My bet would be the drive, given the symptoms.

So for many weeks, I had the blue screen startup loop problem. I finally managed to log in Somehow and reformatted my computer. Now I am receiving a hard drive failing message, and the internet says I should download crystal disk. I did so, and this is what it says

Would be grateful is someone could tell me how to solve this, or if I have to replace it =/

A:Windows 7 hard drive fail message

You'll have to replace it.
