Intermittent BSOD, Black screen and freeze crashes with strange sound

Q: Intermittent BSOD, Black screen and freeze crashes with strange sound

Hi all,

My computer seems to crash, BSOD and freeze at random times. It seems to always crash after a few minutes of running on a fresh start. I've run Malwarebytes anti-malware scan and MSE Scan which found nothing. I've updated drivers, run Windbg, driver validater, disabled non-windows services, startup applications, bios updates, windows updates, memory check of 5 passes, disk checks, power checks with hwinfo, performance monitor reports and I've still not found any concrete evidence that there is anything wrong except that my computer blue screens for the heck of it.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I'd rather not reinstall, but I can if I have to. I think I may get an SSD before I do though.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You didn't post the make and model of the motherboard. Does it have integrated graphics? If it does, pull your graphics card and use the integrated to see if this makes a difference.

I built this PC for a friend and it seemed to run fine for about 6 months, now every few weeks it goes into an intermittent crash cycle. I've tried updating drivers, testing hard drive and ram etc and it seems to run ok for a while but eventually the crashing returns.

Its running win7 Home Prem 64bit

Can anyone help please?

A few days ago I had this problem for the first time, my PC freezes (no buttons respond) and I get a black screen. If sound was playing at that moment, it skips continuously. The only thing I can do is powering off my pc and restart it again.

After restarting it says the pc didn't shut down cleanly and starts collecting meta-cache, I have the option to start Windows in safe or normal mode.

After that everything seems unchanged/normal until it freezes again (this is at random, it can be 20 minutes after / 1 hour after /...).

Prior to the first time I did not download/install anything (to my knowledge), nor did something happen to my pc (didn't let it drop, didn't spill anything on it, etc).

I followed the instructions on the "BSOD - Posting Instructions" to make this post.

Hopefully someone can help me with this.

Thank you.

Thomas D.M.

A:PC freeze, black screen and sound skipping at random

There are no dump files in your .zip folder. Can you please follow these instructions on how to configure dump files. Can you also disable automatic restart, just follow the tutorial and you will see a tick box saying "Automatically Restart" untick it.

Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD

Can you then enable Driver Verifier by following these instructions as it will help determine if there are bad drivers installed.

Ok 116 error is caused by your Graphics card.
First thing to do is update your drivers from the NVIDIA website.

If BSODs continue Try HDD tests,
download gpu-z to check if your card is getting too hot, also is there lots of dust in the card?

Do you overclock your video card?

my problem with the game is similar, after 2 hours of playing the screen gets black but the pc doesn't shut down or restart, sometimes there is a sound lag, you posted your thread quite a long time ago did you find a solution? i heard something about setting the pagefile to a fixed value gonna try this later...btw my vga is 8800gts after installing the new driver i remember having issues with far cry 2 which kicked me out of the game and the vga stopped working but i could still be in windows (in bad resolution and 8 colours).

A:BSOD and sometimes black screen freeze by just using computer

Hello anonymousmurder, Welcome to SF

First off if your OCing in anyway stop, return everything to stock settings for the purposes of testing

If you havent already, fill in your system specs so we know what we are dealing with
System Info - See Your System Specs

Run some scans to check against virus or infection
Anti-rootkit utility TDSSKiller
Windows Defender Offline

Run some basic hardware tests
RAM - Test with Memtest86+
Disk Check (windows based check)
Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure (bootable disk check)

OK thats the general stuff now down to specifics
1st dump reports BugCode 0x1 BSOD Index and doesnt give us a great deal to go on as its quite unusual and blames the driver AgileVpn.sys which is a driver from windows update so cannot really cause a BSOD

This is a kernel internal error. The most common reason to see this
bugcheck is when a filesystem or a driver has a mismatched number of
calls to disable and re-enable APCs. The key data item is the
Thread->CombinedApcDisable field. This consists of two separate 16-bit
fields, the SpecialApcDisable and the KernelApcDisable. A negative value
of either indicates that a driver has disabled special or normal APCs
(respectively) without re-enabling them; a positive value indicates that
a driver has enabled special or normal APCs (respectively) too many times.

A:Screen goes black then pc crashes and repeats the sound it was making

Hi and welcome to TSG.

Can you tell us exactly what make and model the machine is, if it is a Dell include the service tag number so we can look up the exact specs.

Could be a heat issue, power supply, faulty part, drivers etc.

Download and install HWMonitor then run the program. Screenshot the HWMonitor screen when the PC is idling, then run a game for a few minutes (if you can, i.e. it doesn't crash / black screen immediately). Then after about 5 mins of the game running, exit and screenshot the HWmonitor screen again, then post the two screenshots.

Run a DXdiag ... click Start > in the Run box type dxdiag and hit enter.
Click the diagnostic button (if its 64bit it will have a button saying Run 64bit DXDiag,
Click the Save All Information button, save the .txt file somewhere then copy and past that into a reply also.

Hello... hope someone can help me.

I previously had a problem and it turned out to be a driver, everything has been running fine since then... up until now.

Runnning windows 7 and getting BSOD, a plain blue screen or blackscreen then quickly freezes up with a blank screen.

To best of my knowledge all drivers are updated.

Computer is Hewlett-Packard h8-1114 2.00
3.10 gigahertz Intel Core i5-2400
256 kilobyte primary memory cache
1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache
6144 kilobyte tertiary memory cache
64-bit ready
Multi-core (4 total)
Not hyper-threaded
Seems to only happen when I have firefox open, I tried clearing luck. Tried starting with fresh window, still crashes.

I ran the DM log colector v1.2 and attached the file.

Thank you very much,

With Help from this forum about three months ago I was able to troubleshoot and fix issues with a defective installed Video Driver, but starting about a week ago once again I've been getting BSOD and also freeze-ups [without BSOD] that go to a Black Screen and then I need to reboot.

I had installed the latest Adobe flash upgrade minutes before this crash, after reboot system recommended a boot-up files fix from the menu that went on to restored the previous 'restore-point' configuration, apparently Flash was uninstalled [as Adobe/Flash requested a new install right after the reboot], unfortunately even so the system crashed a minute after again, this time I got a BSOD that reported something related to a Driver, unfortunately I forgot to do a screen-grab.

Hopefully this latest BSOD file dump is uploaded here, Could some one take a look and see which driver or what else could be causing a problem now?

A:Sporatic BSOD and Black Screen Freeze-ups/Crash

Hi mackado,

I'm going to need 1 more log file to deduce the problem.

Please follow the steps below:
Go to: Start > Type: msconfig.exe - Press Enter
Go to the tab 'Boot'
Bottom of the window there are check-boxes, tick the one called 'Boot log'
Press Apply/OK
Shutdown the PC
Wait 10 seconds
Turn on PC
Go to - C:\Windows and find a file called ntbtlog.txt
Upload this file to this thread
Once you have uploaded the file, I will take a look and we'll see what we can do from there.

EDIT I have been informed by a helpful screen capture that this is the wrong forum However this keeps happening and I am really desperate to try to figure this out I am sorry if this is the wrong forum but I do not clearly see which other support forum to post about quot system halts that are as bad as a BSOD but do not show a BSOD quot They are all about specific topics and without knowing why this is happening I can't know where to post about this So where should I go with this It's difficult to describe exactly what happened but the on-screen graphics became distorted Screen/Sound Freeze Non-BSOD and the sound from music got quot stuck quot on one note or tone that played endlessly Nothing responded to mouse or keyboard input Had to hard reset Things that may be causing this guessing here Installed a new video card HIS Radeon R I added this a few months ago and haven't had any major problems I can recall Reinstalled windows on a new SSD SAMSUNG EVO -D Vertical More recent but also haven't had any problems yet Started using a new USB mouse Actually it's a regular-old Microsoft Intellimouse I've had for years Seems unlikely but the last time I had BSOD issues it was a USB driver Sometimes Windows doesn't recognize the mouse on waking from sleep and I have to re-plug it Enabled hibernate put computer into hibernate and restored it for the first time with this SSD and install of Windows Again seems unlikely but I did this today DM Log attached I actually just got prompted to install a new version of the AMD drivers but I'm not sure whether this will impact anything If I should run the DM log utility again I will Any help offered would be greatly appreciated

This is a BSOD or startup. Black Crash, Screen shortly Random after Freeze, strange problem my desktop has had for a fairly long time Usually my computer will work fine start up with no problems for several days Random Crash, Freeze, Black Screen or BSOD shortly after startup. in a row And then for reasons I don't know it sometimes will start crashing Usually the screen goes completely black and the computer completely non-responsive and it must be hard reset to get any response at all out of it A few times I've actually seen a brief BSOD but too brief to actually read it Random Crash, Freeze, Black Screen or BSOD shortly after startup. and see what Random Crash, Freeze, Black Screen or BSOD shortly after startup. is happening Sometimes the screen will just freeze where it is with the last bit of audio that was playing repeating nonstop The strangest thing about these crashes is they only happen a little bit after or during startup if the computer is fine for minutes I know it'll be fine until the next time it's turned off It has on a few occasions come up with a screen telling me that the CMOS is corrupted I've had startup repair run and tried some kind of hard drive diagnostic tool the startup repair couldn't find a problem and the tool said the hard drive was good I've seen it crash this way in the middle of the bios boot during login in safe mode pretty much any time during the first half-hour to hour of the computer being on But never afterward I ran the diagnostic tool the results are attached to this post Any help at all would be appreciated In case it has any effect on anything my computer used to be a Vista and a complimentary upgrade was used to make it windows

Hello Xindaris.

It appears that you have tow antivirus programs installed? MSE and Avira?
Uninstall Avira. Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.
Download, install and update those, and then run full system scans with both of them, one by one.

Uninstall MagicISO. It may cause the BSODs as you explained.

Are you overclocking? As you are getting BSODs, you should stop overclocking and run all the hardware components like CPU, GPU and RAM to their default settings. Also set the BIOS to default, too.
How To Clear CMOS (Reset BIOS)

Free up the startup. Windows does not need any other program to auto start with it, but the auto start programs often conflicts and causes various problems including BSODs.
Click on the Start button
Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
Select the “Startup” tab.
Deselect all items other than the antivirus.
Apply > OK
Accept then restart.

Hello For the last couple months my PC has been having an issue where the screen randomly freezes and the last sounds that were playing loop and then stop This can happen while playing a game be it Hearthstone Batman Arkham City any game Can also happen when using any web based flash like YouTube Twitch etc But I have also had freezes about a minute after logging on without even doing any of the above CPU temperatures right before freeze appear normal and the fans stay at about the same speeds when screen no - BSOD Black System Reboot Hard Freeze, Random on freeze happens at least I don't hear them spinning up I am forced to do a hard reboot but it takes a few tries to get the PC to boot because the monitor simply acts like it doesn't detect any video signal upon reboot I can hear Windows do its boot up sounds Random System Freeze, no BSOD - Black screen on Hard Reboot but nothing on Random System Freeze, no BSOD - Black screen on Hard Reboot screen I have a feeling Random System Freeze, no BSOD - Black screen on Hard Reboot this might be multiple problems linked together I included a zip of my computer's SF Diangostic Tool report Thanks for taking a look at this problem all help is welcome and appreciated

A:Random System Freeze, no BSOD - Black screen on Hard Reboot

That definitely sounds like a graphics driver related issue, if not then a hardware failure in your GPU. I would recommend updating your graphics driver by booting into safe mode (F8 on startup).
Uninstall the current ones via the control panel.

In the past few weeks, I've been getting a lot of black screen crashes while playing games - not all games - it seems to be limited to games involving Steam. No BSOD, just a black screen while the game's sound continues, followed by a buzzing sound.

I'm wondering if it's being caused by some of the newer AMD drivers - since I reinstalled Windows 7, I went straight to the latest drivers. I'm going to go back to some older ones and see if it still happens. Temperatures for GPU/CPU seem fine - it's not as if the fans are howling their heads off before the crashes.

If anyone's got any other ideas, it would be great if you could post them.

A:Black screen crashes while gaming, no BSOD

Edit: None of that worked - and it's now happening with non Steam games as well.

Is there a file I could post that would be of use and if so, where can I access it?

For a few weeks now I've occasionally been getting graphics driver crashes Before the crash lots of small squares start flickering over both of my monitors in a pattern getting more and more intense before the screens go black and I get black crashes BSoD, and Graphical screen glitches an error message saying the graphics driver has crashed and restarted Recently these episodes have become BSoD, Graphical glitches and black screen crashes more frequent Yesterday one of these resulted in a BSoD and a complete computer crash It wasn't like a BSoD I'd seen before I don't think there was an BSoD, Graphical glitches and black screen crashes error code but I can't BSoD, Graphical glitches and black screen crashes remember any specifics Since then I've had several system crashes I've not had the squares for a while but most of the recent ones have been preceded by the active window suddenly becoming unresponsive shortly followed by the mouse becoming unresponsive and then a total crash A couple of times the computer doesn't sound like it crashed by both my screens just go black Once my primary monitor detected no input but my secondary monitor remained as it was before normally it would act as the primary monitor if I disconnected my main screen It went back to normal upon restarting I should add that to the best of my knowledge I've not been using any intensive applications recently I've definitely not used any graphically intensive applications for quite a while I really have no idea what's going on but my computer is currently unusable as it is crashing frequently and randomly I updated the graphics driver but this has done nothing I've attached the CPU-Z report and dxdiag if they're at all relevant - if there's anything else you need please ask The specifications are Intel Core i - k OC'd by manufacturer GB RAM Not sure what brand ATI HD GB not OC'd CX W PSU Running Windows -bit Thanks in advance

Heya all I have a bit of a problem where I'm not sure whether it's driver related and playing random screen black whilst crashes LOTRO BSOD, or whether something is failing on my computer My husband seems to think it's driver related but although I can build my own computers when it comes to things like this I'm completely useless First off I can't remember whether I had this issue on my previous set when I first installed Windows or whether it's been just when I've upgraded my computer I just can't recall the first time I started having this problem The first thing I noticed was whenever BSOD, random crashes whilst playing LOTRO and black screen I exited playing a game my screen would go black with monitor message saying no video output and the green power button on my monitor would go orange and I would have turn off and then switch my monitor back on for the screen to come back up Then I noticed that it started doing it randomly when my computer was idle Again I would turn my monitor off and then back on again to get the screen back up During these times when this has happened I've never had to reset my computer I've recently updated my graphics drivers and the issue seems to be a little more often than not now and my husband thinks it's the graphics drivers that's causing it I've done a search on the internet and I've come across similar problems but requires a restart which could mean monitor failure or graphics card failure so I'm unsure as to whether it is driver related The second issue that I've been having is randomly when I play LOTRO EU client I've been having BSOD crashes that require a restart or the LOTRO client has stopped responding error and needs to shut down I've only had BSOD's over the last couple of months the first being when I downloaded the US Beta version of the game to see what DX looked like I thought that perhaps it was DX that was causing it so I disabled DX and didn't have another BSOD for a few weeks A couple of weeks later I was on the EU Live server and I had another BSOD unfortunately for these two BSOD's I haven't got the crash dump report to post up but I'd been having problems with my onboard sound drivers so I thought that could be the reason so I bought a xonar sound card and after that even the crashing and lotro has stopped responding errors stopped and I thought the problem had been fixed Last week I downloaded the preview client for the f p EU Version of LOTRO to help with the stress testing and I again enabled DX Within an hour I had a BSOD and this time I was able to get a crash report from WhoCrashed This is the error message On Tue your computer crashed This was likely caused by the following module ntoskrnl exe Bugcheck code x B xC xFFFFF FC F xFFFFF C A x Error SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION Dump file C Windows Minidump - - dmp file path C Windows system ntoskrnl exe product Microsoft Windows Operating System company Microsoft Corporation description NT Kernel amp System The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module Your system configuration may be incorrect possibly the culprit is in another driver on your system which cannot be identified at this time Which looks like it is indeed a driver issue which is what has been suggested on the LOTRO forums I don't know whether the screen going black and these problems I have with LOTRO are related at all to the Nvidia drivers causing me issues but any help and feedback as to why this is happening would be much appreciated One thing I'm wondering if my monitor was going could that cause an error like this in LOTRO Or is it more likely if it is faulty hardware to be my graphics card Both my monitor and graphics card are less than a year old so I should be able to RMA them if I need to it's just finding out which one needs replacing if it is a hardware fault I hope that I've made sense here and that you can all understand this Also my computer set up is Windows bit Gigabyte Technology Co Ltd GA- T-USB gigahertz AMD Phenom II X Corsair W... Hi Animal,

Please test your memory and clean install the AMD video drivers.

Diagnostic Test

Run MemTest86+ to analyse your RAM. MemTest86+ - Test RAM - Windows 10 Forums

MemTest86+ needs to be run for at least 8 passes for conclusive results. Set it running before you go to bed and leave it overnight. We're looking for zero errors here. Even a single error will indicate RAM failure.
Please uninstall everything of AMD using Display Driver Uninstaller and install new drivers from AMD. Be sure to ONLY install the drivers using custom/advanced options.

Hi, my PC keeps freezing randomly, can be while gaming, online or even when it is just sitting idle on the desktop. Iv'e reinstalled windows twice and updated all my drivers but it still keeps on happening.
My Specs are:
Intel Core i5 4430 - no overclock
1 x 4gb DDR3 RAM
Gigabyte B85M-D3H
Nvidia Geforce GTX 770
Cooler Master RS-500-PCAP-I3
When the crash happens there is no blue screen and the screen just freezes. If there is any sound playing it just goes into a buzzing sound and stays like this until I reboot, after this the PC starts like normal. Is there anything I can do to stop this from happening?

Hello, I just bought an HP Envy x360 laptop. I used it for a day and it was fine. I started experiencing problems after the first day. My problem is that the screen goes black randomly, not shut off but black (the backlight is still on). Also when i connect it to a seperate monitor via HDMI and the screen goes black on the laptop, the screen on the seperate monitor goes blue. It also seems that the screen does not black out when the computer is plugged in, however i have not done much testing of this.

New fresh install of windows 8 updated to 8.1 with all my motherboard drivers etc up to date. Display drivers are the newest Omega drivers from AMD.

I installed steam and decided to install csgo to my ssd/C: drive since it's my most played game. Now I can play the game fine but after a short amount of time the game and display drivers will crash giving me a black screen and sound loop. I let it sit there for a while so I could get a bsod and crash dump to happen.

Since then I also updated my ssd to the latest firmware and reinstalled my AMD drivers and the problem still persists. I have no other games installed at the moment so if you wan't me to check if the crash happens with other games let me know.

Here is my debug info

Since yesterday, I've started having this intermittent problem when I turn on my PC -- my screen remains black (no cursor) during the entire boot process. I know that the PC is booting because I hear all of the normal sounds (including the Windows startup chimes). If I reboot, it usually fixes the problem and then I'm fine.

Here's my specs:

So, I'm not quite sure where to post this problem but I am concerned that I may be "infected" or perhaps being spied on by someone. I'm not sure. Basically, I see a small black box that intermittently pops up on my screen from time to time and then vanishes very quickly (i.e. - a split second). I have tried running MBytes and SuperAntiSpyware but it doesn't fix it. Could it be the screen? I'm at a loss as to what it could be.

If any other information is needed I would be glad to give it.

A:Small intermittent black box on screen

Hello median -
As checks:
Download Screen317 Security Check from Here or Here and save it to your Desktop.
 * Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
 * Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
 * A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt
 * Please Copy/Paste the contents of that document.
NOTE 1:: If any security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to
NOTE 2. If you receive UNSUPPORTED OPERATING SYSTEM! ABORTED! (or similar) message, restart computer and Security Check should run
Also -
Please download MiniToolBox  to desktop to run it.
 Checkmark the following boxes:
List content of Hosts
List last 10 Event Viewer log
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.
Click Go and Copy / Paste the result. (result.txt)

Could it be the screen?

This is a chance, but it would involve a group of pixels to fail in the same spot. Now First -
Please download RKill by Grinler to desktop and run it.
A black DOS box will appear for a short time and then disappear.
This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
At most the tool will usually run for about 2 minutes
Please Copy and Paste the small log back here.Do not reboot your computer until you complete the next step. Next :
Download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
Double-click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
 * Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
Click on the Scan button (only once)
AdwCleaner will patient as the scan may take some time to complete. (a green bar will move across the top)
After the scan has finished, click on the Report button only once for accuracy.
A report (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for your review.
Check the listed removals and see if you are OK with them.
If you have questions, post the Report log back here.
Click on the Clean button only once for accuracy
Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
Press OK finally to allow AdwCleaner to Restart the computer and complete the removal process.
After rebooting, a log report (AdwCleaner[S0].txt) will open automatically.
Copy and Paste the contents of that log in your next reply.
Next - As you have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware MBAM installed, please run a Threat Scan and Copy / Paste any results -
Next -
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit MBAR and save it to your desktop.
Be sure to print out and follow the instructions provided on that same page.
Note: This is a beta version so please be sure to read the disclaimer and back up all your data before using.
Scan your system for malware / rootkits
With some infections, you may see two messages boxes.
Could not load protection driver'. Click 'OK'.
Could not load DDA driver'. Click 'Yes' to this message, to allow the driver to load after a restart. Allow the computer to restart.
Continue with the rest of these instructions.
If malware is found - do not press the Clean up button, please go to the MBAR folder and then copy/paste the contents of the MBAR-log-***(date).txt file to your next reply.

If there is no malware found, please let me know as well.
Thank you -

For the past few weeks my computer has been crashing every couple of hours for some obscure reason.

I've tried doing a system restore but as soon as win 7 completes it's updates after the restore the problem persists.

I've also tried doing a repair, but the windows installation CD supplied by the store with the computer doesn't have the repair option for some reason when booting from it.

attached is the following support data in a zip file:
the contents of my Windows_NT6_BSOD_jcgriff2 folder
the performance manager report
an Everest report of my system stats
A bluescreenview report of the crashes (it claims the culprit is the ntoskrnl driver).

Please HELP... what can I do?

Just saying your computer has a 550W power supply hasn't helpful.

What brand name and model number is it?

The GeForce GTX 960 graphics card uses 120W and requires a minimum of a 400W power supply.

My machine is running Vista 32 SP2. I've been having a problem recently where Windows won't load properly. It only happens once every few restarts/starts, but I fear it may be a sign of a serious problem.

At the point where Windows begins to load and the loader bar is displayed, the screen goes black. No cursor. No nothing. Windows never loads and a manual restart is the only alternative. Also, when this happens the hard drive light flashes, but in a suspiciously regular pattern.

I've seen references to the BSoD, but they usually refer to the login screen being blacked out. This seems different from those accounts as Windows never loads.

Thank you in advance for your help on this.

A:Intermittent Black Screen after Windows Loader Bar

Hi to BC!

So it only happens once in a while right? and then the screen goes black during start up. Is there any odd sounds such as beeps or clicks coming from the machine when this happens?

When I'm working with my computer the screen goes black intermittently for up to a minute.  There is no update available for the graphics card and I was wondering if there is a new graphics card available for this laptop that would alleviate this problem.

I've been having an intermittent problem with this laptop recently, and there's an older issue which may or may not be related. Every so often, the screen will go black for a second or so. In some cases the screen I was on will temporarily have parts missing (as though it isn't loaded properly) after this happens. It usually seems to happen quite soon after I start using the laptop. The original issue was that about a month ago my laptop started going into sleep mode randomly while I was using it. I disabled sleep mode entirely as a result of this, and it seemed to superficially fix the problem. However, this other issue with the temporary blackouts started more recently and I have no idea how to go about fixing or preventing it. This is also a fairly new laptop - I've only had it since February. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

When turning on the computer, it mostly has just a blank grey/black screen. The screen image does flash intermittently (although not in any consistent way) and show itself, but does not stay visible to allow using the laptop without a secondary screen connected. With a secondary screen, the computer operates fine, so if you can see what it is doing on another device, the data can be used. It defeats the purpose of laptop though and makes it inconvenient to have to pull the screen from another computer.

Bought said laptop from PCWorld (Leicester, England) on 27 November 2015.
Whilst watching any footage on YouTube, when using right-hand screen slider to scroll page down (and back up), at a given point, screen suffers from an intermittent blackout.
Same issue has occurred whilst using same slider to scroll through Facebook.
Can liken to a human being blinking for a second.

Additionally, whilst trying to place an online order with John Lewis, at the point where I wished to select their Click & Collect delivery option, screen permanently blacked out.

Thanks in advance.

A:Intermittent Black Screen while using MS Word 2013 - 365 ProPlus

So after hours of troubleshooting I still have not come up with a cause or solution for this problem however I have found one thing.
It only happens if Word is maximized and in focus.  Word can be open while I'm doing something else and everything is fine.  I can manually size the Word window to almost maximized and, so far, I am not experiencing any problems.
I have experienced it once using Open Office writer but no other applications, or games.
I am using an HP Pavilion

fter upgrading to Win 10 Home from 8.1 and even after clean install of Win 10 Home, I get intermittent almost black screen without cursor. Programs running, like browser video continue producing sound without glitch. Ctrl-Alt Del does not work but Fn-F7 turns the LCD backlight off (darker black screen) and pressing again turns it on with video restored. The problem will recur from 2 seconds to a day later. Driver errors in Generic PNP Monitor (present in Safe Mode) and Bluetooth have been corrected by uninstalling and scanning for new hardware, but problem persists. Both sfc and dism completed without changing anything.

Hey all,
I am having problems with the screen freeing when running multiple windows (Chrome, office etc etc). When I try to swap between windows, I get a freeze and I am unable to do anything.
The cursor can be seen moving around the screen but has no effect in any area. The Windows Key doesn't ppear, nor can I tab into another programme.
If I try and start task manager to see which program is causing this, it will not appear over the frozen image.
Is there a way of telling from an event log what program is failing?

A:Intermittent boot with and without hard-drive. Black screen. Gateway NV53 Laptop

It may be caused by bad RAM. Download the ISO image for Memtest in my signature and burn it to CD using IMGBurn also in my signature, or burn to USB flash drive with Rufus, in my signature or use their burning tool on their web site. Remove all but one stick of RAM. Boot off of the newly created media and do the tests on each stick of RAM separately for at least 7 passes. If you get any errors, red in the bottom half of the window, that stick is bad and needs to be replaced.
You can also remove the HDD and attach it internally to a desktop computer, or via a USB Adapter or put it into a USB dock or enclosure to backup the files and run Diagnostic tests on the HDD.

Hi -

What web browser are you using? (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome etc)

Just looks like your saved form information within your browser has been deleted. If, you log back in to these sites (Facebook, TSF etc) and accept any dialog (or checkbox) that asks you whether you want the form information (username/password etc) to be saved that should take things back to how there were before.

As for the black screen, it is difficult to tell what caused in, however if it should happen again, reply here, and I will attempt to assist in finding the cause/solution.

Let me know how you get on.

A:Help! Black Screen after freeze

when you get the error message, make a note of the error code then post again. if the blue screen is not up long enough try and take a picture of it (it works you just have to be quick lol).

when we have the code it will be easier to figure out.

Hello, I'm having an issue with my PC I've put together and am not sure what is causing it. When I am playing games Like Team Fortress 2 and Command and conquer my PC locks up with a black screen and sound loop. There is no particular time when it happens, sometimes it takes an hour or two and then happens every ten to fifteen minutes. and sometimes it happens after twenty minutes and sometimes it doesn't happen at all. I can leave my computer on for hours and no problems, only when I play games. Anyone have any Ideas?

If it only happens when you are playing games, and at different times during the games, it's probably a graphics card issue. You may want to install and graphics card fan to keep the temp down, or possibly consider upgrading your graphics card.

I would first suggest running a quick diagnostic on it, search for the burn in diagnostic tool from the downloads section of the site and let it run, it will test your graphics card.

Well like it says I just put together a new pc that will not stop crashing and bsod. Only new parts other than the case is the MB (ga-p45t-es3g) and ram (G skill Ripsaw 2 4gigs ddr3 1600) but it seems even after a fresh windows install the crashing, freeing, and bsod continues even before widows can completely boot up. Also it seems to not want to turn on every few boot ups. I have the dmp files from the bsod since fresh install but they seem to be mostly scrambled. here is the most recent one:

I bought this new computer 2 months ago and i've been having some problems.
It randomly freezes while playing games (mostly WoW) or just doing other things, first the picture freezes while the mouse is still working, then the sound and the mouse cursor stop and the screen goes black saying "No Signal" and after few seconds the computer restarts.
I have attached the last 2 minidump files (only have 2 since i re-installed the windows not long ago).
I bought a new PSU few weeks ago and still i get the same crashes.
My computer configuration is:
MB: Asus M4N98TD Evo
CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 260 3.2GHz
VGA: Asus EAH5750 1GB DDR5
RAM: 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Kingston
PSU: Delux ATX 800W P4

Can you help me about this problem? Because at the moment i have no idea what might be causing the problems.
Thank you.

After a period of time with the machine not rebooting (just fan running, no screen, looks like no disk i/o) it finally booted and it seemed like it was working. Then the cursor froze again, then black screen, and now I can not reboot again. I noticed that wuauclt.exe (supposedly windows update) was running as well as some other suspicions apps before it froze. What would you recommend I use to eliminate any malicious software, provided I can get this machine booted up again?

Greetings My PC is windows bit service pack Lately I've been having a recurring Hanging Freezing issue It appears to happen randomly sometimes when it's sitting on the desktop sometimes when typing in a forum like this other times while playing a game The computer will freeze or hang the mouse might still move a little bit for a second Then the screen usually goes black Sometimes I can still move the mouse but it will only move in a jerking fashion every couple seconds rather and Black Screen Freeze/Hangs than smoothly Some of the screen will sometimes start to come back like the bottom or top of the screen but the rest Freeze/Hangs and Black Screen is still black However every time it ultimately results in the computer completely locking up and I am forced to turn it off and back on I've scanned my entire PC multiple times with Malwarebytes Spyhunter MSE and others I used CCleaner to clean up my registry I made sure my video drivers are updated and windows update is all up to date as well None of that helped My video cards do tend to run hot when playing graphic intensive games but I've played for a long time like that with no issues I use in crossfire mode though despite multiple varifications saying its on and working I never see the nd card having any GPU Freeze/Hangs and Black Screen Load Though the st card never gets to load either Just in case that is the issue I just now took out the main card altogether and swapped it with the nd card Currently waiting for it to hang again as it appears completely random I use GPU-Z and Coretemp to monitor my temps If these aren't the best options or something else is needed I can download whatever programs and run whatever tests you Freeze/Hangs and Black Screen need for more info I'm pretty good with using computers in general but I have less experience troubleshooting an issue such as this so please try to be as clear as possible Please help Thanks

Your log is clean. The error messages your posting are Windows and hardware related errors. It's likely something in your PC is conflicting with windows. Ask your question in the XP forum or hardware forum since you reinstalled..this may be a hardware issue.

I have been experiencing these crashes and freeze ups for a long time.I have done everything i can think of including multiple fresh installs, but that didn't seem to help.I was told it may be hardware related..

My first guess as to why it was happening was that the pc was being pushed to it's limits by too much activity at once.Browsing the web, running Limewire, and watching TV on the pc.

These are the errors that appear when the blue screen crashes occur.I sure hope someone can help.

Typically due to a bad driver, or faulty or incompatible hardware or software. ...Technically, this error condition means that a kernel-mode process or driver tried to access a memory location to which it did not have permission, or at a kernel Interrupt ReQuest Level (IRQL) that was too high. (A kernel-mode process can access only other processes that have an IRQL lower than, or equal to, its own.)

(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
This indicates that the memory management Page File Number list is corrupted. Can be caused by corrupt physical RAM, or by drivers passing bad memory descriptor lists.

Requested data was not in memory. An invalid system memory address was referenced. Defective memory (including main memory, L2 RAM cache, video RAM) or incompatible software (including remote control and antivirus software) might cause this Stop message, as may other hardware problems (e.g., incorrect SCSI termination or a flawed PCI card).

A kernel-mode process or driver incorrectly attempted to perform memory operations. Typically, a faulty driver or buggy software causes this.

(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
This indicates that a session unload occurred while a session driver still held memory. Specifically, a session driver is not freeing its pool allocations prior to a session unload. This indicates a bug in win32k.sys, atmfd.dll, rdpdd.dll, or a video driver.

(note win32k.sys is a kernal mode process which handles system service calls for things such as video card drivers and printer drivers it calls such things as directX , Direct3d and NtUser)

So it would appear you have a problem with either memory or an incompatible peice of hardware, possibly your video card.
Normally, if you check the stop error, it will include the memory addresses which caused this or the dll file . This can be used to determine what device is causing the problem.

My first advice would be to update your motherboard chipset drivers , then your video card drivers, then sound card and any PCI card devices.

Recently I have been getting issues with BF3 and WoW since I installed the new NVIDIA graphics drivers. I've gotten BSODs as well as my PC randomly acting up. It works perfectly fine when I play games on a single monitor.

Sometimes all three screens just go into powersaving mode or something, but I can still hear Skype and music in the background but I dont see anything. A hard reset is required at this point.

I own a Gateway NV52, and the issue with locking up began after I upgraded to Win7. After reloading the factory default of Vista on this, the laptop keeps randomly locking up and then going to a blank black screen.

I've gone to other threads and tried running MemTest and Vista's Memory Diagnostic and they both came up with nothing. I've also seen that other posters have attached dump files and other generated information from the computer to help solve their issues, but I don't know where to find these files to even get started. Can anyone help? What other information do I need to give to get started on the right track?

If errors are found run the test again as it sometimes takes about 3 passes to get it all fixed. Sometimes even that fails to repair it but post back with results and we will take it from there.

Hi Monk77,

Also, i replaced my ram sticks recently and powersupply last chirstmas if thats relavent.

Was this just an upgrade that you wanted to do, or were you having these issues before as well?

You should also run a test on your RAM sticks with memtest86+ There are two ways to run the test, either from a CD or USB. You will need to burn the ISO to a CD and then boot to the CD and run at least 7 passes on each stick and in each slot (only the ones that are being used). There is an auto-installer for doing it via USB (again, you will have to change the boot order to boot to the USB if you choose this method)

Both downloads can be found halfway down the page. The reason that you should run it on one stick at a time, is so, if there is a fault with one of the sticks, then it's easy to figure out which one it is.

What programs do you have running at boot? What anti-virus are you running as well.

A:Black screen/vertical line freeze!

Well, yes, heat kills hardware. However, if that projector had been so hot, your laptop would have at least restarted, if not turned off, in order to save itself from potential damage from the heat.
There are some programs for monitoring your laptop temperatures, you can use them to check if the problem occurs because of overheating (SpeedFan and Core Temp).

If the problem has something to do with your drivers and the restore point is before you have updated for example your Display Driver, then you could first try running in safe mode and see if the problem still occurs. If no, restore your system, it won't delete any files, it will only return your registry and drivers to earlier state.

That you are out of warranty shouldn't stop you from taking your laptop for diagnostics. You will have to have money of course, but at least they will fix the problem ; )

A:GAMES freeze/crash PC to Black Screen

I would suggest some hardware checks.

Before you proceed with the following, answer these two questions: Are you still under warranty? Does your warranty allow you to open up the machine to check hardware? If you are unsure of the answers to these questions, contact your system manufacturer. WARNING: The steps that follow can void your warranty!!!

If you are overclocking any hardware, please stop.

Monitor temperatures during the following tests. Use the following programs to monitor the temperatures. Real Temp is a good CPU temperature monitor.
Speccy - System Information - Free Download will monitor all hardware temperatures.
HWiNFO, HWiNFO32 & HWiNFO64 - Hardware Information and Analysis Tools can be inaccurate for CPU temperatures, but is a good program for GPU temperature monitoring.
Use FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, Burn-in Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net to test the graphics card GPU. Let it run until the GPU temperatures even out or until the GPU temperatures reach a dangerous level (you can find the max temperature for your card on either the nVidia or AMD sites; if you are not sure, ask us). The goal is to get a steady temperature, find out if the GPU is overheating, or to see if there are any artifacts present in the test itself: look for strange pixelated patterns on the screen or colors that do not look like they belong. Then use the |MG| Video Memory Stress Test 1.7.116 Download to test your graphics card memory. Let the memory test run for at least seven passes; the more the better.

Run Hardware - Stress Test With Prime95 to determine any hardware problems. Run all three tests for a few hours each. If you get errors, stop the test and post back here.

Follow the steps for doing CPU stress test using IntelBurnTest

Run the boot version of Memtest86+ paying close attention to Parts 2 and 3 of the tutorial. Also, in case Memtest86+ misses anything and comes up with no errors, run the extended version of the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool for at least five passes. These you may want to run overnight since they take a long time to complete (run them an hour before bed each of the next two nights and check before going to sleep that they are still running).

For Part 3: If You Have Errors: If you swap any memory components, follow these steps for ESD safety:Shut down and turn off your computer.
Unplug all power supplies to the computer (AC Power then battery for laptops, AC power for desktops)
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to close the circuit and ensure all power drains from components.
Make sure you are grounded by using proper grounding techniques, i.e. work on an anti-static workbench, anti-static desk, or an anti-static pad. Hold something metallic while touching it to the anti-static surface, or use an anti-static wristband to attach to the anti-static material while working.
Once these steps have been followed, it is safe to remove and replace components within your computer.

My XPS 15 9550 - quad core i5 freezes randomly - the screen will turn black (or grey), but not the windows BSOD. I have to hold the power button to force shutdown and reboot the laptop when this happens.
Tried updating all drivers, not helpful, clean installed windows 10, didn't help.
This could happen anytime, even at the time I'm not touch my laptop, or running anything.

Seems to be driver related or hardware.. anyone have some issues?

A:XPS 15 9550 Freeze randomly - Black screen

I had the exact same issue yesterday, was on the phone with Dell support for 2 hours and they couldn't figure out why, the final decision was they were going to replace the motherboard as they thought it was more likely a hardware issue than a software one.
Question, did you use the new TB15 dock with your 9550 as I'm trying to figure out if the failure is related to using the dock to provide power.

Hi and welcome to TSF,

1. Please try another monitor if possible to eliminate your monitor from the equation.

2. I believe that board has built in graphics, please try and connect to the other vga port on the I/O board on back of pc. You may need to go into bios to enable the internal IGP(graphics built in adapter) beforehand.

I have a multi-boot set up with XP 64 as one of the OS's. I have been using it more often recently and it can suddenly give a black screen, keyboard doesn't work (tried to shutdown 'blind' using Ctrl+Alt+Del then Alt+S then Enter, no response). Also pressing Numlock doesn't affect the LED.
There is nothing relevant in Event Viewer.
The PC goes totally dead although the power is still on.

I have Vista 64 also and this works perfectly, so do Vista 32 and XP 32.

There is no pattern to the freezes, at least none I can see, they seem to occur at random times.

I know it's a tall order with such an intermittent fault but has anyone got any idea what I can do to troubleshoot this ?
