Using Windows laptop This is the main hard drive with the OS installed When still in that laptop the computer won t boot up at all It brings up the very first screen for about five seconds and then the entire laptop powers down then repeats infinitely I am using a Apricorn brand USB to SATA adapter to read the HD externally The adapter works and is working properly having tested with another drive When Using USB-SATA Adapter, System Sees HDD, Assigns Letter... I plug the adapter in the drive spins up almost immediately a quot G quot partition appears in quot Devices and Drives quot on my laptop This partition is labeled quot System Reserved quot and is MB in size with no data on it A Using USB-SATA Adapter, System Sees HDD, Assigns Letter... minute or so later an quot H quot partition appears but that s the extent of it A green loading bar starts at the top fills and just sits there loading If I try to click on the H drive to open it a spinning wheel appears and it seems to try but nothing happens If I right click on the drive and click properties nothing comes up If I try to open Disk Management while the disk is plugged in the window opens but it just hangs at quot Loading Virtual Disc quot but won t open up I attempted to run ChkDsk from the dos prompt When I type CHKDSK G it says it finds no problems When I type CHKDSK H it just hangs there surprise surprise At this point I don t know what to do and I m in a panic to salvage the data from this drive Any help is deeply appreciated nbsp

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an eMachines desktop It's pretty old and the HDD recently went bad unrecoverable I got a new HDD but my recovery disks wouldn't install XP correctly - I got the reboot for I: install assigns letter fresh partition main loop after installation Tried three times Finally found an OEM copy of XP Media Center Edition which was what I originally had on there and used the product key fresh install assigns letter I: for main partition off my machine It installed fine and all but for some reason it assigned drive letters C thru H to my -in- media reader and USB drive making the main partition letter I I wasn't too thrilled by this but I figured as long as the install finally worked I'd take it The problem came when I went to install a Realtek ' sound card driver from the eMachines support website It's a exe file and is set to automatically install itself to the C drive when opened Therefore I keep getting an error that it could not create C cabs and the driver installation closes Does anyone have any suggestions for either how to change the main partition letter without screwing myself or how to reinstall Windows without it assigning all these drive letters to my card reader

A:fresh install assigns letter I: for main partition

and welcome to the Forum

That's a quirk with XP . . if it "sees" other drives it movesdown the chain to the next available drive letter.

The only practical fix is to reinstall with the 5n1 and the usb drive disconnected ( or disabled in BIOS )

Good day all,
I have bumped into a bit of a problem that I have issues resolving. I am trying to connect to a network using usb wifi adapter. I get 5 bars of signal which is max on the scale but it will not connect.
Network is WPA2 personal / AES, settings are correct as well as password. The connection worked for a bit and then I was dropped off. I have tried reseting IP, i have tried changing USB port connection on the laptop I have restarted the laptop...
The thing that baffles me is that when I take my laptop out and go to where I can get signal with the built-in wifi adapter I get connected without a problem...
Any suggestions will be most appreciated... Thanks in advance

I just did a fresh install of Windows XP Pro on a clean drive. I am having a difficulty with the computer seeing my LAN connection. It does show a 1394 connection. I have tried using the wizard many times to create a new one for Ethernet connection. I tried finding a possible driver online for the Fic K7mnf64 motherboard, which the Nic is attached to, with no luck. I have not installed any other software other than Windows XP Pro. For the past three days, I have been able to succesfully connect to our neighbors wireless network (he provided the password and it is within 150 feet of my computer) and although I made no changes, my adapter no longer sees the network. It does see other networks, so I'm not sure if that rules out anything. I did have issues with it before in which I had to manually set up the IP under alternative connections.

A:Solved: Windows sees SATA drive as dynamic volume

I figured it out. I did remove the SIS raid utility but that didn't do what i needed. The disk was still showing up in Disk Manager as a dynamic disk. I deleted the partition so it was all unallocated space but it still showed as dynamic on the left side of the disk, where it would say Disk 1, Dynamic, 232.88 GB. Well, I right-clicked on that part of the window and it gave an option to convert the disk to Basic. I chose that option and I was than able to create a regular partition and it is now a basic disk and not a dynamic one. Thanks for the help.

I want to transfer data from my hard drive in my laptop (Lenovo Y480) to a hard drive in my desktop. the cables for the sata adapter do not fit the hard drive from the laptop. Is there a different form for a 2.5 hard drive and a 3.5 hard drive?

A:sata to usb adapter cable dosen't fit sata hard drive in laptop?

Does the drive have an adapter need to remove to expose the SATA conenctors? I don;t see anything about the Y480 not having a standard SATA drive and laptop and desktop SATA connectors are the same.

Maybe post pictures of both the drive and your SATA cables.

The mother board is an ASUS P5Q? I know the adapter is working because I can hook the cable that comes from the case to another sata slot shut down turn the enclosure on and boot and I have a third hard drive. But that is not how I would like to do it. If the mother board would recognize the enclosure it would give me an icon in the tray to shut it off and I would not have to reboot to back up something.

I wanted to know if there is a way to connect a SATA hardrive to an older motherboard that has no SATA connection

A:Adapter to connect SATA HD to motherboard with no SATA connection?

You can always use one of these PCI SATA adapter cards:

A computer as old as you're describing will likely have an old type standard PCI slot, and NOT a PCI-E (PCI express). be certain to verify which slot you have, before you make a purchase. These are two entirely different interfaces, which are not interchangeable.

Hi Guys' I have a sata 160Gb hdd as second drv (ntfs) on XP home.I must have had too much wine for dinner as I formatted it & then ghosted my C drive onto it. Unfortunately the C drv is FAT 32. Now the drive ID letter (F has gone. I can still see the drive in disk manager but cant access it. Is there a way of low level formatting it ? I dont mind losing the data. Thanks Manfred.

I do have a good relationship with my PC - just a bit strained at times.

Oh yes, two Primary Active HardDrives.

You should still see it in My Computer
Where you can right click on it and select Format...

Or just use a Windows CD to boot from and remove it from there
(I usually unplug the main one just to make sure that I don't remove the partition (and format) that)

Yes I know I can change the drive letter in windows but I like to keep my window (WINXP) drive letter assignments the same as my DOS assignments.

A:SATA Drive Letter Assignments

Is this going to be a boot disc (the SATA) or an add on for storage? Best guess is that a non boot drive will be "G". And of course there is really no DOS in XP.

Hi all,

I bought a new SATA Western Digital HD yesterday (WD3200JD/7200R/8M) as an additional HD. I already have a WD 160G drive running as the master. I've attached the new HD to my motherboard (Gigabyte GA-8I915D Pro), but it is not being recognized or being assigned a drive letter. I can see it in the Device Manager, and the report says it's operating properly, but no dice. Belarc shows it as Drive 1 (although the Device Manager lists its location as "0 (0)" - the same as the master), but does not list in local drives.

I've changed the connection position on the motherboard also with no luck.

Any suggestions?

I bought a barebones kit today.

In it I installed an new FIC - AN19E Stealth Socket A ATX DDR Motherboard, a new AMD Athlon XP 2200+ CPU, a new Squeeze CPU fan, 2 new sticks of premium grade 256 DDR PC 2700 333MHz Ram, a used 64 MB NVidia GeForce 2 video card, a used 20 GB hard drive, floppy drive, a new V.92 Data/Fx/Voice modem and an old 56X CD ROM.

I loaded all the software from the mainboard CD. The hard drive already had WinXP Pro loaded on it.

Everything seems to run just great, but not as fast as I had expected. Checked system properties and it shows the CPU as a 553MHz AMD Athlon(tn) XP.

So I ran Passmark's Performance Test v4.0 and it shows a clock speed of 553.4MHz.
What's up? Did I miss a jumper setting on the motherboard?

Or a clock speed setting in the BIOS?

& thanks in advance

A:System sees 2200+ CPU as 553 MHz??? HELP!!

Make sure the FSB is set correctly, it should be at either 133mhz, or 266 mhz, depending on how your motherboard displays it. Also, make sure the multiplier for the CPU is set correctly.

Hi all,

I've recently upgraded to w10 but weirdly now windows only sees 8GB. When I had w8 it saw all 12GB of ram but now only 8GB.

I've checked CPUZ and it can see the 12GB fine but windows still only sees 8GB (and not '8GB usable', it actually only sees 8GB).

I've already looked to see if I should update motherboard BIOS but it's an Asus Rampage Extreme III and the last BIOS was released in 2011 (I have that one installed).

Does anyone have any idea what I should do?

Thanks for your time!

My old Dell Dimension 8400 no longer sees my partition. When I go to the setup it says my main IDE hard drive and slave are not present. I do have a Sata hard drive that is present. I go to recover and it doesn't show the install image and thusly doesn't let me repair. I have an eMachines T3985. It supports 2 IDE cables.

IDE Cable 1 is for disks; it supports two drives. Recently I added a 2nd drive with two partitions. Disk partitions are now

C: 80Gb system drive
D: Restore Disk
E: New HDD partition 1
F: New HDD partitiion 2
G:-J: Removable devices
IDE cable 2 supports a DVD/CD and has no secondary device.

I no longer see my DVD/CD device. I don't remember what device it was, but it might have been F:

How do I fix this to support both the New HDD as 2 partitions and find my DVD again?

The BIOS appears not to see the DVD/CD either. The device does allow CD's to be put into it and taken out of it.

I have a Windows 10 server with an incoming VPN connection created. Right now it specifies a range of IP addresses for the client to use. The alternative is to set it to have your DHCP assign the client's IP address instead. This is what I would like to do, but when I set the connection to ask like this, clients can't connect. On iOS and OS X they both say that they both cannot establish a connection to the VPN server.

My purpose for doing this is to allow all the clients to still browse the internet while connected to the VPN, which normally they cannot do (even when setting to send all traffic). I have to specify the DNS (my router's IP) on each computer, and on iOS this isn't working/possible. Does anyone have a solution to this, but at least more importantly the first issue? Thanks!

A:Can't connect to VPN when it automatically assigns IP's

This may or may not be any help, but what router are you using? Old drive (with data) is initialized (what OS?) and so should not be or you will lose the data. New drive (empty) may need to be initialized before use.

If so what is a good one to use.

A:sata to ide adapter?

I think a good solution would be to get a PCI card with IDE controllers. Of course, you need a free PCI slot but the card should have two controllers (connectors) that will handle two IDE devices each.

Click here to see an example of such a card. Mind you, I'm not endorsing this exact card since I don't have one. However, it's to show what I'm talking about.

Im lost. I have an external hard drive that I use for school. I need to connect it to my computer at home. It has IDE cables. Im not sure which to get for it. Help?

A:SATA Adapter

Cheaper than an actual adapter (and faster)would be a PCI SATA controller card. This one has IDE connections as well.
Note that versions costing less than 35$ only come with SATA1 speed.

And i only want to know that the sata to ide adapter will it slow the transfer speed or burning speed..
Pls reply fast

A:sata to ide adapter

if their is only ide then then you will need an adapter so if it slows transfer speed not much you can do about it but get new motherboard. burn speed you will want to burn at the lowest speed anyways to get the best quality burn.

So I'm still dealing with this problem.... I've got my system running XPpro on a 20GB PATA with an extra 20GB PATA for storage, had it this way for a long time now.

Now after I purchase a WD 250GB SATA drive to throw in there for additional storage, it doesn't show up at all in Windows Explorer or Drive Manager. BUT it does show up fine in the BIOS. I've already formated to NTFS and partitioned it using XPs DOS setup CD. My system is loaded with SP2 and all the SATA drivers so there should be no reason for the SATA not to show up in Explorer.

So my question is.... In a system that uses both SATA and PATA hard drives, does the operating system have to run off the SATA in order for all drives to be present???

A:Using SATA & PATA HDDs in 1 system: have to use SATA for C:\?

Don't think so, usually it is the opposite.

Does the drive show up in the Logical Disk Manager?

It may just need a signature written to it.

(you can get to LDM by right clicking my computer -> Manage. It will be down the left side.)

I recently purchased an IDE to SATA adapter. I plugged the IDE end into the harddrive but when i tried to plug the SATA end into the mobo the SATA connectors were "above" the connections on the mobo this is on a Toshiba laptop.
Are there certain adapters for certain laptops? I`m new to these and thought they would all be the same as the research i did on the net said nothing about there being different adapters for different laptop mobo`s.
The only reason i bought one was because my hdd died and i have a few spare ide hdd`s and instead of buying a new hdd i thought i`d try an adapter.

two HDs with the same signature.

I took the 250 drive offline (physically) and attempted to boot the 500GB drive using the
external USB to SATA connector.

Window 7 logo came up, then gave me choice to "Start Normally" or "Repair"
Start Normally showed Windows Icon and then threw me back to BIOS.
"Repair" locks up (freezes) as doesn't recognize my keyboard.

Putting the 250 drive back, system boots as before.

2) Any idea what's up?

TB support IDE/SATA Adapter vs. HD Enclosure? isn't possible for my price range Trying to keep it to on eBay no more than then at a minimum it should support a laptop HD up to GB Preferably something hot-swappable with as few cables as possible Also the more support for different types connection types sizes and capacity of HDs the better IDE SATA to USB adapter Pros- It will fit both quot Laptop and quot desktop HD's nice because I have several older quot desktop HDs sitting around that I'd also like to make use of They seem to support greater HD sizes than enclosures for the same price Since I'll be getting a TB IDE/SATA Adapter vs. HD Enclosure? HD it'd be nice to have something that supports one that size in case I want to use that one externally for some reason but it's not a requirement Will work with both IDE and SATA HDs nice because many of the old HDs I have use IDE Cons- It requires the purchase of a separate Power Supply cable which will add to the cost and be one more cable to deal with also I assume that all power connectors for all HDs are the same and I don't need to worry about having different types of power adapters If this isn't the case please let me know lack of compatibility would be another con I've heard that static electricity could pose a serious problem for internal HDs that aren't protected and could easily render them useless Is this a serious problem I need to be constantly wary of or is it just another one of those quot be careful because you're not allowed to sue us quot type warnings Under what circumstances would I need to worry about it This is the main reason I'm leaning towards an enclosure unless it's actually a non-issue or there's a relatively easy way to protect them HD Enclosure Pros- Convenient for taking it places with added protection all around They don't seem to need any additional power supply or other cables Again please correct me if I'm wrong Seemingly more support for hot-swapping but I can't find any concrete evidence that the adapters don't support this Cons- Most only fit quot OR quot HDs and won't work with both sizes Although if I could find one that does work with both for a cheap price that'd be awesome They don't seem to support SATA and IDE at the same time which means I'd probably have to get at least two different ones or pay a lot more for one that does support both Although having two available at the same time could be a possible Pro I know this is a lot to read but I only deal with software and need help choosing the right hardware I really appreciate any helpful information you guys can give me about this An example of an adapter without a power supply USB to IDE SATA Hard Drive Converter Cable eBay An example of an adapter in... I'm playing with a recently retired server running 32bit Windows 7 Professional. Originally it was configured as RAID 0 with 5 SATA drives. Those drives are gone but I want to install a spare 2TB SATA drive that I have. Using the RAID Management software I have created the drive and it shows the correct configured capacity. I initialized the disk with Disk Management and it lists the disk as online but it doesn't show up in the volume list with a drive letter. My intention is to use the 2TB drive as media storage. Other than combing RAID and Windows 7, what am I doing wrong? Am I better off reformatting everything and reloading Windows?

I have a mini pcie mSATA card that I want to use for a desktop of mine. Kingston sm200s3 60GB

I believe there are only 2 options.
1. SATA > SATA adapter > mSATA card
2. PCIe slot > PCI adapter > mSATA card.

As far as 2. goes; I have found a card that fits into a PCIe slot which has an input for the mSATA card.

I know that this is not the ideal way to hook up the card but I don't see any more options.

Which is there better way to go or what am I missing?

A:Mini PCIe and adapter VS. SATA

Whatever has an mSATA interface for it will work.

From here SSD Kingston 60GB SM200S3/60G mSATA p/ Ultrabook,tablet - Atera Inform?tica

its a SATA 3 device, so for optimal performance you should use something that can guarantee enough bandwith to not bottleneck it.

PCIe bandwith depends from number of lanes used (a x1 card has one lane, a x2 card has two and so on) and the PCIe revision/version of both devices. The panel on the right here gives all speeds so just multiply that by the number of lanes the card has and you will find out its bandwith. SATA 3 has 6 GB/s of theoretical max bandwith, although actual transfer speed does not go above 1 GB/s afaik.

This Mini PCIe PCI E mSATA Intel Samsung SSD SATA 3 III Adapter Card with Case | eBay

this SATA III Dual Port to mSATA X 2 w/ PCI-e Bracket | MSATA-2XS3-BKT

are examples of what you listed as 1, and stuff I would orient myself towards if my mobo had SATA 3 connectors already. Because... hey, why waste PCIe slots for that?

XP does not natively support much new hardware, including SATA drives.

If you have an adapter, then none of the BIOS tips in what follows apply to you. You need the driver.

Install Windows XP on SATA without a Floppy
Resolving "Setup did not find any hard disk drives" during Windows XP Installation
"Many newer BIOS allow an Alternate method for SATA . . Go into the BIOS and check the 'Sata Operation' setting, change it to 'Raid Autodetect/ATA' if it is not already. Now try to install XP (Verbiage will vary by manufacturer)" - Courtesy of simpswr.

All the other problems seem to be the other way around.

My 2 DVD writers are on the primary IDE port. Had 2 x 80GB HDD's on the 2 SATA ports. Upgraded 2nd HDD to 320GB. No problems. Decided to use left-over 80GB HDD as backup disk. Installed an adapter. Plugged into secondary IDE port on motherboard. Did CMOS changes.

Booting up has three (seemingly random) results:
1. Boots up normally
2. Boots, but takes 6 minutes from "Starting Windows" to password screen
3. Never gets past "Starting Windows". This is the most common.

When it boots up normally I can use the drive. Formatted it. Changed label. Did system image.

Anybody had any success doing this?

Later edit: Tried with PCI SATA adapter and that works 100%.

Try assigning a drive letter a "distance" away from your existing drive letters.

For example, change the dock drive letter to Z and see how you get on with that.

I'm looking to purchase in the UK a powered USB to IDE/SATA lead and having looked on ebay and amazon, I have not seen a unit with a decent set of reviews and UK plug

anyone actually purchased on of these units and could recommend a good quality unit.
I intend to use on customer provided harddrives, to attempt to recover data, so do not really want a low quality unit - read about a couple damaging the harddrive - which is the last thing I need

any now compatible with USB3

When I installed a TF III GTX video card I lost my PCIE-X slot and SATA port on the Inspiron Foxconn G -M MOBO I am still running Now aside from the fact that I need to upgrade the MOBO I added a Rosewill RC- -EX PCI-SATA adapter SiL to gain back SATA ports The card is working fine It is slow compared to the MOBO SATA ports but I expected that I have a Seagate GB HDD and an Optiarc DVD R W drive attached to it BUT I can not boot from either device They do not appear in the boot options Based on my reading I got the quot NON-RAID quot IDE ATA emulation BIOS from Silicon Image and flashed the card's BIOS Adapter on devices RC-209-EX (SiL3114) boot Cannot from PCI-SATA since I will not be using it for RAID It is just for more SATA ports Should I be able to quot see quot the PCI-SATA card and its attached devices in the 's BIOS Setup Screen Is it a limitation of my Dell neutered BIOS The RC- -EX documentation specifically states it quot supports quot CD DVD drives There is plenty written about booting from a RAID array configured to the RC- -EX but very little Cannot boot from devices on RC-209-EX (SiL3114) PCI-SATA Adapter about booting from single device Any input would be appreciated I have already tried several things but with no luck

A:Cannot boot from devices on RC-209-EX (SiL3114) PCI-SATA Adapter

Well to answer my own question.

The RC-209-EX PCI-SATA controller requires a MOBO with a BIOS that supports booting from a SCSI Contoller. It would seem that the Dell Inspiron 530 FoxConn G33-M03 MPBO does not.

Now that that is settled I can just configure it for the additional storage which is what I really need anyway.

As a side note, Rosewill technical support said that not all OD devices will work with it even though the documenation states that the RC-209-EX "now supports DVD/CD drives". I can state that my Optiarc DVD/RW drive seems to work fine with it though I will move it back to a MOBO SATA port in case I do need to boot from it.

I have been trying to recover files from a corrupted hard drive. No OS will boot on it, scandisk freezes on trying to correct index errors, HDD Regenerator shows no bad sectors.

The only option left that I can see is using an adapter and trying to pull the files off through a pc, but this hard drive, Seagate Momentus ST9160821AS, has a interface that I am not farmiliar with.

I do have an IDE converter for laptops but it interfaces with pins, and I cant find a converter that fits with this one, probably because its SATA NCQ. Is there another name for this kind of adapter that i can't find?

Here are some pictures of the interface, hope somone can give me some info on it.

It seems to be a pain to get drives to show up in explorer a lot of the time, it doesn't simply show up right away, so I start replugging things trying to get the particular drive to show up. Is there some item out there (inexpensive) that will allow me to connect 3.5 and 2.5 inch internal drives via USB to my laptop that isn't as bad as the adapter I use?

I have an old machine with only 2 SATA connectors and 2 PATA connectors. I need to install 3 hard drives. I don't have any PATA hard drives so I got an SATA->PATA adapter. I installed Win 8 on the hard drive connected to the adapter and it was running fine. I decided to replace the OS hard drive with a SanDisk 64G SSD and ran into problems.

So I decided to go for a fresh installation. I booted via a USB drive and installed Win 8.1 on the SSD. After reboot, it goes directly into recovery and reports an IO error. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks.

Does the hard drive show up in the BIOS? That card may have its own BIOS menu that you will have to access to set the correct boot order. My IDE RAID card had its own BIOS setup menu that I had to access during boot up. It had its own drive detection etc. Watch your screen during boot up and you may see a message telling you what key to press to enter its setup menu. Did it come with any documentation or a driver disk?

I am trying to access my wife's macbook hard drive via my Windows computer using the Vantec SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter. The Apple techs said they could not get the drive to register when they hooked it up. However, we gave it a good drying with blow dryer.

The adapter works fine and all the correct drivers installed.

I am in disk management and the 250GB drive seems to be showing up. However, it is not showing up in My Computer and right click shows "assign a letter" is grayed out.

A:SATA USB Adapter With Macbook Formatted Hard Drive

You are going to need a utility like MacDrive
to read the files. About all you can do directly from the windows management in this instance is format the drive. (which would result in the complete loss of data on the drive)

Also if any of the apparent moisture involved got inside the housing it's very possible the data is damaged beyond recovery. Since hard drives save data to the disk by creating what is essentially rust (iron oxide) manipulated magnetically on the surface.

There is likely a free utility out there that does the job. I just don't deal with mac's very often personally so it's not something I would be aware of, you might try google.

In the past I've migrated 7 from one hdd to another by doing a backup to a usb drive, then swapping the drives and restoring to the new one.

What I need to do now is a twist on that. My MB is one of the new p67s that has the faulty intel sata ports, and will eventually be recalled. The 4 6Gps sata ports on the board are not affected by the chipset problem, so i plan on just using them instead(plus i just got a 6G seagate drive that I wanted to use anyway).

What I envision happening is restoring to the new drive on an entirely different sata adapter and port #, and the system not booting. I assume i could get around this by booting to a command prompt and using bcedit, but am not 100% on that.

Can someone recommend a good way to do this, or if my idea sounds fine, confirm it?

Hello dronf, and welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

You have left out lots of info that would help answer your question. Is this a Desktop Computer? A laptop?

With my desktop, I use a second hard drive to save an image created by Windows Seven backup utility. When the OS hard drive failed, I just swapped for a new hard drive, booted to my 7 install DVD, and restored the OS to the new hard drive.

You could do something similar and just as easy. You have the choice of saving the image on either the old hard drive or the new hard drive. If you do not have an install DVD, have Windows 7 make you a repair CD for you to boot from and restore the image to the new hard drive.

If you wish to give more details about your computer, I am sure we can offer some good suggestions for you to choose from?

Hey guys, I have used all my SATA ports on my motherboard (4 HDs on them), but i wanted to use my dvd burners, so I bought a IDE to SATA connector, to use on the DVD burners, the PC turns on and boots fine, but my monitor LG L192WS wont turn on, with the connector connected, what could be the problem.

A:monitor wont turn on after installing ide to sata adapter

Here is my confusion:
If the monitor will not turn on, how do you know the PC "boots fine"?
What do you see? Are there any error messages? How could you tell if there is no output on the monitor?

Do you mean that you eventually hear the Windows startup sound, but with nothing on the screen?

If so, then your new device may be conflicting with your video card. I assume if you remove it, all works normally?

If this is so, then try installing the new card in a different slot on the motherboard.

Let us know what is going on here!

Hi there

Now these exist (SATA USB3 connectors) you've now got extremely FAST external laptop PC drives !!!!

If you've replaced a laptop drive with an SSD don't ditch the old drive unless it's REALLY old. If your machine has USB3 use a SATA==>USB3 cable to the PC laptop drive and have it as an external drive -- works SOOOOOPER FAST.

(SATA to USB2 is fine too so in any case don't "Bin" the old drive --use it for backups etc).

A:Sata==>USB3 adapter Now really GREAT use for old laptop drives

this adaptor is the best way to broke the connectors on the drive. If you want to use an external HD, better use an enclosure like this one, it cost only $ 19 ;

if like me you need a bench r solution to transfer info for many drive , a dock station is the best for not damage the connectors

Once an electronic device smokes you are pretty much screwed.

You could buy that exact same drive and try swapping the PCB, provided you didn't blow up the motor or damage anything actually inside the drive that will work.
