Windows 7 Restricted User - Remove Right click on taskbar icons; Remove show desktop icon

Q: Windows 7 Restricted User - Remove Right click on taskbar icons; Remove show desktop icon

Hi, I have a kiosk PC that is looking pretty good however I have two outstanding issues.

The users can still right click on applications on the taskbar and receive a context menu even though I've disabled the context menu in the group policy editor.
User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Start Menu and Taskbar/Remove access to the context menus for the taskbar - Enabled

And I can't figure out how to remove the "show desktop" icon in the systems notification tray.

Thanks in advance for any help

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows 7 Restricted User - Remove Right click on taskbar icons; Remove show desktop icon

Hello Megan,

Hope you're doing fine.

Disabling context menu from application on the taskbar
Please note the task bar context menu for any application for windows 7 is sub-divided into two sections :

a. Jumplist(to access recently opened files)
b. Creating a new instance of the application, Pin/Unpin, Close window

We can only disable the Jump List of the Taskbar context menu but not the "new instance creation, Pin/Unpin, close window"

Please follow the steps below to disable jump list:
1. Right-click on the Taskbar and then select Properties.
2. Click on the Start Menu tab and uncheck "Store and display recently opened items in the Start menu and the taskbar".
3. Click OK.

Disabling Show Desktop from the system tray
Regarding the requirement of disabling the "Show Desktop" button alltogether from the System tray, this is by design.

There are no ways to remove it. All we can do is to disable aero peek at Taskbar properties by right clicking and uncheck the option "Use Aero Peek to preview the desktop".
There's a third party software which addresses this sopecific purpose but I'm not pretty sure if this works perfectly for Windows 7 SP1 as well. Please refer to the link below.

Hi,
I'm sorry for the title but I don't really know how to explain better my problem. I think it's easier to take a look to the attachment.
The pin and the X are huge! I don't know why and I how to solve the problem.
It's a windows 8.1 with bing installed on a brand new Acer notebook.
I tried to change fonts, themes, show small icons and some other things but no luck.

Does anyone know what can I do?

Thanks

When I create the desktop toolbar in the taskbar, it creates a button with 2 chevron arrows, and it also creates a label calles "Desktop". I know how to remove that label, but then it displays all the objects on my desktop in the form of icons and the name of those objects. I know how to remove the name of those objects, but I can't figure out how to remove the icons (see image below).

The only thing I want to see is the show desktop button, and nothing else. Any idea how to do this?

A:Desktop Toolbar Icons in Taskbar - How to Remove?

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Place your cursor over the dotted spacer bar to the left of the desktop toolbar icons and click and drag the dotted spacer bar to the right so that the icons become hidden.

Next, right-click the taskbar and enable "Lock the taskbar".

My son gave me his Presario 700 laptop. Yesterday I turned it on and all it would do is go to the wallpaper and then nothing. I do not get any icons or start button. I was able to get on line by going to the ctrl, alt, del and getting the task window and doing a search.

I can not find the restore disk and my son is in Irag, so I can not ask him where it is. My question is, is there a way to restore by using the task window to find the file?

Thanks,
Armymom

A:Windows desktop doesn`t show. No icons or taskbar etc.

Is this Windows XP? I guess what you could do is search for rstrui.exe, it's the system restore utility, and try that out. You can find it in C:\Windows\system32\Restore (at least on my computer.)

Usually, a right click at the icon > click "unpin from taskbar" will do the trick.

What icons are you referring to ? Please give names of the icons.

Here is our dilemma. At the community college I work at, the librarians have requested that certain icons be pinned to the taskbar for all users. By default, Internet Explorer, File Explorer, and Store are pinned on the taskbar in Windows 8.1.

Well, they want none of those icons pinned to the taskbar, but they do want other icons pinned. I have tried a script to get rid of them on logon, but it deletes the icons so slowly that users can actually notice the icons disappearing on logon (it takes about 2 seconds per icon to delete). The librarians dislike this.

So, has anyone figured out the mechanism that creates these three icons? I would like to figure out a way to disable their creation in the first place, if possible. Already, Windows will allow additional icons to be added; it simply won't allow these three to be removed.

A:How to remove default pinned taskbar icons in Windows 8.1?

Right click and select "unpin this program from the taskbar". I have that option for all three on my Windows 8.1 system.

How can I put the Show Desktop icon in the taskbar? I just want the one small icon like we have in XP. Thanks.

A:Show Desktop Icon in Taskbar? I want it.

I dont know how to do that...but you can always use shortcuts
like

WINDOWS KEY + D = minimize all aplications and show the desktop
WINDOWS KEY + M = minimize all open windows

its faster and you dont have to click anything xD

There are some old threads on this subject which are useful icon in taskbar Show Desktop left on but Show Desktop icon on left in taskbar have become dated so following instructions I have decided to open a new thread The Show Desktop button in W is over on the right and I wanted to move it to the left but that appears to be impossible Now I know the W-d keyboard shortcut achieves the same goal but I would also like to have a clickable icon in the taskbar on the left Here's what I did In XP I created a shortcut to Show Desktop and placed it on my desktop Then I quot pinned quot it to the taskbar and it worked just fine So in W I copied the XP shortcut to my desktop where it still works just fine However when I pin it to the taskbar W creates a link to Windows Explorer which is NOT what I want In Properties this shortcut is described as quot Windows Explorer Command scf quot So if anyone out there has a way to create a Show Desktop button on the left of the taskbar I would greatly appreciate hearing from you Surely there must be a file or command buried somewhere in the system that performs this task I have looked but haven't found a thing that is useful

I manually upgraded to the W10 anniversary upgrade. Since then I have a "Windows10 Upgrade" shortcut icon on my desktop from the file "Windows10UpgraderApp.exe" in the C:\Windows10Upgrade folder.

Now that the upgrade is all done and history, do I still need this icon or even the C:\Windows10Upgrade folder on my pc?

How to show the desktop icons as icon (no thumbnails) ant the windows explorer as thumbnails? Thanks!

A:How to show only desktop icons as icon

Hello Suriname,

The desktop and Windows Explorer share the same thumbnail preview settings. If you turn it off, it affects both locations.

A workaround would be to have image files or folders as shortcuts on the desktop instead, and change their icon to one you want.

I was infected with a scare-ware..I dont remember what it was called. I managed to get rid of that with spybot, but I am still experiencing some problems. For instance, when i boot up windows I dont have any desktop icons or the bar on the bottom with the start button.
Sometimes task manager doesn't work making it difficult to do anything at all. My internet cuts out entirely at times and I cant open any new connections but previously established connections remain open like ventrillo. I've used malwarebytes anti-malware, spybot search an destroy, and I also have avg installed.

A:Desktop icons and taskbar dont show up

Before much can be done about the malware removal, we need to establish how best you are able to use your computer at this stage.Windows Advanced Options MenuGetting into Windows Safe Modehttp://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htmFrom the Windows Advanced Options Menu, please try the following ...Choose "Last known good configuration that worked", and press <ENTER>. The computer will attempt to load Windows. If Windows does not start normally, try the same thing again .... and continue trying for 10 times, before you rule that option out as a means of getting your OS running normally. Why 10 times? Based on past experience, a successful result is sometimes achieved after several consecutive failed attempts. You can log in to Windows normally, but you end up looking at your desktop wallpaper/background image (not a plain blue or black screen?), but without icons/taskbar/start button. Is this correct? You implied that task manager works only sometimes (and I am guessing that you have been using Ctrl+Alt+Del): Does Ctrl+Shift+Esc bring up the Task Manger window reliably? Please try the following ...On the Applications tab of the Task Manager window, click on "New Task", and in the "Run" dialog box that opens type "explorer.exe" and press <ENTER>.Does a Windows Explorer window open, and can you use it to browse all the files on your computer?OR ... do you see a message? What happens when you attempt to start the system in Safe Mode? Are you offered the choice of logging in to either the Administrator account or your own account? If you log into your own account can you then open Task Manager using Ctrl+Shift+Esc ?Please try starting the system in Safe Mode, and logging into the Administator account and let me know if there is any difference. What happens when you attempt to start the system in "Safe Mode with networking"?On the Applications tab of the Task Manager window, click on "New Task", and in the "Run" dialog box that opens type "iexplore.exe" and press <ENTER>.Does a Windows Internet Explorer window open, and can you use it to browse the net on-line? Do you have internet access then?OR ... do you see a message? After doing all of the above work, please re-start your system. Does your system start normally ... or is it still without icons/taskbar/start button?

Hello, I'm looking for a way to either resize or remove the icons from the taskbar, here is a screenshot just to be clear:

(red box around them)

The reason I want to resize or remove them is because I've got my taskbar set very small (as you can see in the picture) and the icons are too big to fit properly on the taskbar.

I've tried fooling around in the WindowMetrics registry key, but I couldn't find anything useful.

Any help is very much appreciated!

Thank you.

Hi
I have recently updated to 8.1 update 1 and noticed that there is a new icon (next to the time) in the taskbar to choose either the US or UK layout of the keyboard.
I have chosen the UK layout and wish to now remove this from the taskbar.

Is it possible to remove it from the taskbar?

Thanks

If you remove US as a language option for the keyboard layout the icon will disappear , it's only there as a way to choose between languages installed if more than one is available.

A:ALL my website desktop icons show as same white FILE icon

I usually drag the little icon on the left end of a URL in the Address bar to the Favorites toolbar or to the Desktop, not the URL itself. The icon itself relies solely upon a Web site having a favicon.ico file on it somewhere. [I've lost track of it but I used to have a small program that could harvest favicon.ico files and save them but that was back with WinXP and IE6, don't know if it would work with later versions.]

I am aware that I can use Windows software to hide the icon, but that places a small line on the taskbar that when clicked, lists the programs being hidden. I don't like this either!
Is there some way to remove icons specifically without having to use "notifications area" option that is built into windows?

Perhaps I can find the icon in the registry?

Hello Wolfgang,

If you mean the Safely remove icon in the system tray, see if plugging in a USB flash drive will trigger the Safely remove icon to display in the system tray. Afterwards, you may be able to set it to not be hidden in the Notification Area Icons settings.

Stick in a USB, then click the little arrow that shows the hidden icons. Drag the hidden icon you want displayed onto the system tray. It should keep showing it from then on.

I went into the options where you tell Windows what icons to show and when - and it was set right - to show the icon and notifications.

I have 2 external drives and use flash drives constantly. I'm really afraid of losing some data if I can't get that icon back.

Anybody know how to restore all default icons for the task bar?

I'm not an expert and you might want to wait for expert advice. It seems to me that explorer.exe process stops responding in ur system. to bring the desktop back, just hit Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up Task Manager and select "New Task (Run...)" from the File menu and type in "explorer.exe".

i dont know the reason why this is happening (if you're using internet explorer, u can try using another browser like firefox and see if this still happens. further, viruses can also cause this, so scan ur system for them. or just wait for some expert here to advise you).

A:Missing Taskbar and Desktop Icons Evertime I click links on the internet

Hello jerald,

You missed the most important step.

As noted in the final step (Step 5) of our sticky topic IMPORTANT - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help....

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop.

What DSS will do:create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review.
DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt in your next reply.
Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simplyClick the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt

Click Upload.

Please include the following in your next reply:

I installed a few apps yahoo IM for example. It installed a taskbar notification icon, but when I deleted the application and rebooted it still shows a choice in the Customized section of the Notification Area in the Menu.
I found a fix for this, not sure if its the best way but it works! SO I hope some of you will enjoy this!

Be Warened you need to regedit!

#1. Regedit to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

#2. Delete the entries for IconStreams and PastIconsStream. (close Regedit)

#3. CTRL + ALT + DEL Start taskmanger Find Explorer in the Processes tab and end the task

#4. While in Task Manager click file, New Task (RUN) and type explorer

#5. Reboot

#6. Your GHOST icons should be gone now, however your customized settings will also be gone so you will need to change them again.

I think it's my users folder. I've supplied a screenshot [removing my account name for obvious reasons but the black arrow should highlight where the icon & name are positioned on right side of the taskbar.

I've tried to remove it without success. I don't know why it's suddenly appeared but I'd like to get rid of it.

I've tried using the following ...
c :/users/username/app data/roaming/microsoft/internet explorer/quick launch/user pinned/taskbar
but it's not on there to remove.

Could someone tell me how to get rid of it??? Right clicking on it does not give me an option to unpin.

Thanks.

I need to remove all the most visited pages which you get when you right click on the quick launch icon. I have cleared all the data “from the beginning of the time” several times but no use. All the pages come back after Windows is restarted.
I have also reinstalled chrome & waterfox but they all come back after a reboot.
I have tried CCLeaner and Glary Utilities as well...But none helped

Hi I'm having trouble when I load my side of the computer and the only way I can access programs is through Windows Task Manager. All that will load is the desktop background picture. I have looked up various solutions - it seems the explorer.exe process is missing or unable to be located when I try to run it. I have ran an AVG scan and two infection were found and supposedly healed. These were C:\Programfiles\MicrosoftCommon\wuauclt.exe (Win32\Heur)and C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntos (trojanhorsePakes_c.RZ). Have not yet ran any other scans and really need futher advice on what to do next! I have Spybot and Adaware but have not yet ran a scan since before the computer started playing up. I've only had this problem once before - I think it was yesterday and I panicked and just turned off the computer at the switch. Restarted, everything was fine and the toolbar &desktop was there. Today it was working fine until I turned it on about 2 hours ago

I've seen something like this once but could not fix it, however try the following. At the blank desktop (just wallpaper) bring up task manager ctrl-alt-delete. You should see some tasks but explorer.exe is missing.

Click new task, enter explorer.exe and press enter. The rest of the desktop will load, icons, taskbar and menubar. You now have a chance to fix whats wrong.
If you can run a scan with either SysInternals autorun of HijackThis this will be your best chance, compare each running task with google, you may be able to pinpoint the cause(s).

You may however be able to create a new user in control panel with admin rights and copy your files across from the old account to the new account.
I'm not sure exactly where in the boot process explorer.exe is called from, but your machie has been compromised, and sometimes its easier to format and reinstall.

The machine I had a look at for a friend also had a folder on the root C: drive just called ! This folder contained hundreds of p0rn type avi's but worse still refused to be delted recreating itself on reboot. Check for any strange folder names called ! may also be worth you running msconfig and hecking the contents of win.ini system.ini, startup services and programs.
Good luck.

When I right click programs in the taskbar I have the option to "pin them to the tasbar". Is it possible to remove this option from the right click menu?

A:Remove "pin this program to taskbar" from right click menu in taskbar

Here's a discussion that makes it seem possible, but I would say it's too much work to make it worth it:

How to Remove "Pin this program to taskbar" (Network Steve Forum)

This isn't a guide, but it's a question that was posted asking the same question you're asking.

Also, the discussion is a little bit hard for me to follow because it's a thread but the responses to previous posts begin immediately following the last character of the post they're responding to.

To skip to down to the part that might work for some of your programs, perform a Ctrl+F search for "got". This is the first word of the post that suggests a possible solution for some programs that might allow it. Read the replies that this post received.

Sorry for the long title. I was guided to this site by hijack this. Many thanks to Buckeye Sam for removing the viruses from my computer. The viruses are gone, but my original problem was 100% cpu usage, and that problem still exists. I'm trying to run Adobe AIR to take an online real estate class and it continues to max out usage and lag badly. I noticed that watching videos after a few minutes has the same result. I only have 512 of RAM on this older Dell inspiron 5100, but I've never had any problems before. I have reinstalled the drivers disk, gone to microsoft for updates and defragged the disk. I have plenty of disk space and apparently no viruses. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

If you like, you could disable the user account to no longer have it show up on the log on screen.

If you don't want to disable the user account, then you could set Windows to require users to enter both their user name and password on the log on screen to no longer see any users on the log on screen.

For the login screen you would need to edit the authui.dll, look at Post #23 of this thread Removing Picture Frame On Startup/Login Screen Danny has already made up a authui.dll that removes the logon picture.

Hi

I am running Windows XP Home SP2. I have an icon on my desktop that refuses to be deleted - it is called "Sony Ericsson File Manager" installed with my Sony Ericsson PC Suite as a necessary feature for transferring files via USB between my phone and my laptop.

When I right-click on it, there is no option to delete.
When I drag it into the recycle bin, or when I select it and hit 'delete', nothing happens
When I run desktop cleanup wizard, Windows says "Cannot move file: the name you specified is not valid or too long. Specify a different file name".

Thanks in advance for any help.

Try moving them into the "User's Files" folder. That should get them off the desktop. Then you can uncheck "User's Files" if you don't want to see that folder.

- looked in msconfig - startup, but nothing out of ordinary.

I've seen solutions posted all over for removing the desktop icon from appearing in windows 7 when you press alt+tab, but this does not seem to apply the change to the win+tab shortcut.

I added a DWORD called 'AltTabSettings' in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer and set the value to 1, is this supposed to work for both alt+tab and win+tab?

If not, anyone know how to do this? It would make win+tab (which is much prettier of an effect than alt+tab) much more effective.

If anyone has a solution I would be most appreciatve.

Thanks,

Colom2

Try Move On Boot, it's pretty simple and effective.

I sent my computer to the repair shop and they apparently reinstalled everything. For some reason they put the "Homegroup" system icon on my desktop and I don't want it there, I don't even use that. When I right click it, there is no delete option at all. Can anyone tell me how to delete this? Its annoying. I really get tired of Windows 8 trying to force me to use things that I don't wish to use. I noticed when I click on the icon it has the option of "Leave the homegroup". I don't know if that would get rid of the icon or not but I am afraid to click leave the homegroup because they said my windows was corrupted and they fixed it. I am afraid to do anything drastic on my computer for fear it might corrupt it again. It seems like any little thing you do messes up this Windows 8.

Hi there, I've just reinstalled my Windows XP SP3 on my laptop but after installing the integrated webcam a (Laptop Integrated Webcam) icon appeared on my desktop and I'm unable to delete it, I've tried pressing delete after selecting it but nothing, also when right clicking on it no "delete" option is shown. Does anyone know how I could remove this annoying icon? Please help my because I really hate having icons on my desktop, thanks in advance.

Hi there
Not sure what update it appeared after but I now have a Home group icon on the desktop that I can't remove -- normal desktop icons can be deleted via right mouse click --no option for this. On the Home group icon the delete option doesn't appear on right mouse click.

As I'm running W8.1 ENTERPRISE I don't want or NEED Homegroups.

Any solution on how to get rid of the icon. (I can always restore but I shouldn't have to do this for such a stupid problem).

Cheers
jimbo

A:Cannot remove Homegroup Icon from Desktop (W8.1)

Hello Jimbo,

Since you do not use HomeGroup, you could stop and disable the two services below to get rid of it. You may or may not need to restart the PC afterwards to apply if refreshing the desktop doesn't do so.

Services - Start, Stop, and Disable in Windows 8

HomeGroup Listener
HomeGroup Provider

Hope this helps.
