High memory usage / Memory leak caused by Intel driver

Q: High memory usage / Memory leak caused by Intel driver

Hello, I'm running a 64 bit Windows 10 laptop. On idle, the System process is showing a high memory usage of more than 150 MB, usually more than 200 MB. Using poolmon the pooltag SpDN showed up with a memory leak. It leads to the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver, iaStorV.sys. How should I go about fixing the problem?

Preferred Solution: High memory usage / Memory leak caused by Intel driver

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

Since this is a Intel driver I doubt the WDK can fix it.
You may try to see if there's a more current version of Intel's RST available for download and see if that fixes the leakage issue.

Cheers,

Hi I am helping my parents troubleshoot their trojan extreme causing slowness leak usage. or system Memory high memory and computers My feeling Memory leak or trojan causing extreme system slowness and high memory usage. is that they are both infected with the same virus trojan but I can find it or figure out what is going on The each have identical laptops and both are experience identical problems Both are running Avast and both systems are not turning up any discovered viruses or trojans during scans I am on the verge of completely refronting both of their laptops and am really hoping I can avoid having to do that I suspected that maybe they were both infected with poweliks but the below FRST shows at least Memory leak or trojan causing extreme system slowness and high memory usage. Has anyone else noticed that chkdsk uses all available physical memory if you let it run long enough I find that if I run chkdsk and leak memory usage memory / high chkdsk watch the memory usage in task manager it jumps by about MB every seconds or so until it either finishes or hits around GB at which point my physical memory shows used I'm running GB and the system of course slows to a crawl If you just run a quick chkdsk on your boot drive you may not notice it but try running something longer like chkdsk r on a flash drive or chkdsk f on a bigger internal drive but not chkdsk high memory usage / memory leak your OS drive as this would require a reboot and watch the memory usage climb I have duplicated this on both systems I have running win My XP machine checking the same USB flash drive uses a much more normal amount of memory for chkdsk - MB Anyway just looking for suggestions as I have old hard drives that I would like to check Normally I would run all at once but with this system it's just not possible as they each use about MB of memory and once all the system RAM is used up the disk checking process slows down a lot

A:chkdsk high memory usage / memory leak

chkdsk /r is implys /f if you only doing NTFS format then try /I or /D or /C

/I NTFS only: Performs a less vigorous check of index entries.
/C NTFS only: Skips checking of cycles within the folder
structure.
/B NTFS only: Re-evaluates bad clusters on the volume
(implies /R)

Greeting Lately i have encountered a frustrating high level of CPU and Memory usage When i first started my computer with no application running i noticed the slow loading and that's when i saw my CPU and physical memory rocket-up to and gigs of ram To make the matter worse the physical memory usage increases gradually until it reachs near GB At some point the free P M reaches the CPU usage is unstable somestimes its and somestimes There's another strange thing is the sudden appearance of svchost exe which i haven't seen since i caused Physical extremely high CPU and problems Usage by Memory Odd bought this PC I've searched through the forums and found several methods Virus scanning process explorer turning off several unneccessary services and even re-install windows C driver to be specific but sadly nothing worked I've also disabled Odd problems caused by extremely high CPU and Physical Memory Usage the apps that i recently added to chrome as i thought they were the causes but the P M Usage still stays at GB The only thing that i can use with getting lag and stuttering now is google chrome although its a horror just looking at how slow things are Please help me to find a solution i have a lots of important document and i can't stand the thought of having to completely re-boot my whole computer Thanks a lot My Computer Windows Ultimate -bit GB RAM Processor Intel Core I Ghz Graphic Card GTX Ti P s Please be reminded that even if i turn off all the google chromes and Avast processes the P M usage will stay at GB or more no application running I've also tried to use the Event Viewer to see the Application and Services logs If you need a screen shot about the warnings and errors i got just request below

So I've had this problem for a few months with my Unknown memory Win7 usage? leak and General memory thinkpad x win home premium bit I used ccleaner run memtest multiple times chkdsk multiple times sfc scan multiple times none that helped Sfc always detects errors but always cannot fix some of them I have mse avast and malwarebytes and scanned them with absolutely no results I've run rootkit scanners with no results Basically after a few hours the memory use rises up to out of my gb with absolutely no intensive processes running I'll attach rammap and processexplorer screenshots I know this is not quot normal quot behavior because once my ram goes over the system slows down to where General Win7 memory leak and Unknown memory usage? I can't end tasks open new programs even things like deleting a file take minutes Once it reaches or my screen starts flashing black kind of like if you blink fast I have to hard restart every time this General Win7 memory leak and Unknown memory usage? happens This is not normal I've had quot experts quot on other forums tell me its win using the ram to its greatest Its not As soon as I restart and open my usual programs browser steam openoffice winamp utorrent my ram is at around or percent If I leave the same programs open and just leave it on for hours the ram gets to and my screen starts flashing and I have to reboot If you look at the rammap and process explorer shots the most ram intensive programs are chrome and firefox but they only use mb each Everything else is only - mb and do not add up to the gb my computer uses after only a few hours The thing I noticed is that the quot page table quot is using gb of my ram don't know what it is though I tested my hdd using crystaldiskinfo and hdtune and found nothing Although I did replace the factor hdd with a larger gb one and imaged my previous hdd But I don't think this is the problem since I've had the new hdd for a year and the problems started in the last few months My ram is gb gb factory and gb corsair select I bought afterwards I tested my computer with memtest and manually rebooted with each stick and the same thing happened only faster because of the less ram it must be a software issue Ram Use Note both these show the screenshots when my computer was at like gb ram is unaccounted for Ram Use - Imgur

Hi mesohamster welcome to SevenForums

First I recommend uninstalling Avast then we could go from there . Using Revo Uninstaller

Click on the app inside RevoUnistaller and choose uninstall
Click on Yes to agree you want to uninstall
If you get the builtin Uninstaller for the app use that and once you're done click Finish
Back inside RevoUninstaller click on Next
Let RevoUninstaller scan for left over registry keys . Click on Select All and choose Delete .
Once done click on Next.
Let the left over files and folders be locates then Click on Select All then click Delete then Next and you should be done .

Restart PC

It also depends, what kind of and how many extensions you have.
Some of them might be causing it, try to temporarily disable all.
Finding a cause can be difficult, you can try CleanMem Free.

Hi, in cases like this I like to look to the most obvious cause and one very often ignored. One of the major problems in Vista XP and 7 is a corrupt pagefile . Can return all sorts of problems and is simple to fix and perfectly safe. Is the paging file on the C drive? Or have you moved it somewhere else, if on the same drive as the OS then:-

Go to control panel, system and security system
Click on advanced tab
In the performance section click on settings
Again click on Advanced

Select the Virtual memory custom tab and set max and min to 00, 00 click on set then apply and ok out. Reboot computer.

Now go back to VM settings and select "system managed size" again press set and apply and ok out Reboot to take effect.

This has created a new pagefile and set the VM to the preferred settings.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi,
I have recently been experiencing several troubles. For one, after 2-3 hours of running my 8gbs of RAM quickly maxes out and I end up having to restart the computer. Task manager does not show any abnormally high RAM using processes. Also, my nvidia geforce gt 650m keeps randomly crashing so I have to use integrated, which requires me to restart. (I have been using the latest beta drivers) Also, I constantly have 1 cpu core being maxed out, again with no high usage processes showing up on task manager.
Other than those symptoms, everything is working normally. Any ideas?
Thanks!

At this point,I'd at least love to see that extension. It sure would help.As I've said...i generally have anywhere between 50 - 150 (sometimes more.Ive even had upwards of 225 tabs + open (Not all loaded though) at a time.I really would love to see an extension though (which I've never seen) that informs me when My memory usage reaches a certain point ! WHY hasn't someone invented this extension yet ???
Whaaat!!  225 tabs??   Methinks therein lies your problem.  Maybe you are expecting too much from an extension too.  It's not the job of an extension to monitor system resources.

Hi Everyone from Bleepingcomputer.com,

I am facing some issues with my laptop.

I always noticed my CPU, Memory, Physical Memory usage are running quite high.

Wonder is it normal for my computer?

I always feel the temperature is quite high and my fan keep running fast all the time even with just running some lite program. Sometimes my computer also turned to Blue Screen.

It seems that I've been getting low memory issues ever since upgrading to Win10, but I'm not 100% certain if thats the issue. I thought about uprading to 16gb ram, but I'd like to know if theres some other fix for this. I can't multitask as I used to be able to. Sometimes problems occur just running 8 tabs on chrome and a game(Blade and Soul). The numbers just don't seem to add up.

A:High Memory Usage/ Low Memory Popup on Win10 8gb Laptop

Hello svader55 Welcome to the Ten Forums!

On the first impression I would have to suspect the problem is with the upgrade itself where you might end needing to see a Clean Install of 10. First however you can try a few things out to see if this is only a minor glitch. On an older 7 model by HP the upgrade seen last summer was a disaster waiting to happen which I had enticipated and saw an immediate clean install to follow! Of after going from the 32bit 7 Home Premium to 10 Home x86 I subsequently changed that with a second fresh install the 64bit Windows.

The initial tool would be the System File Checker you would run from the Command prompt(admin) option when right clicking on the Start button. You simply scroll down to that option to see the new window open up. At the dos like prompt you then simply type in "sfc /scannow" and press enter to get the tool underway.

The tool will then scan all the important system files and if finding one or more corrupt or missing will often be able to replace them but not all unfortunately from cab files tucked away on the local drive. With previous versions the rec for having the Windows dvd in the driver was made in case the SFC had to extract something from the Windows media there if the problem was more involved. This is why the suggestion for the possible need to see a fresh clean install of 10 is being made here.

Unfortunately buggy upgrades are all too common regardless of which version is being upgraded over. But you likely saw the option for 10 in the 10 app? or in the Windows Updates perhaps? if not seeing 10 downloaded separately. The appearance from the images you provided suggests the problem is the memory being mapped out to hardwares while that first item being a 32bit app taking upto almost 1tb seems a bit high.

(I have also posted on Microsoft's official forum, and had zero luck, due to the fact that everyone who started posting had a different issue/misunderstood what my issue was, and distracted the attention from the opening post.)
When downloading anything at all, be it games, music, videos, etc, System and Compressed Memory starts to use up more and more memory, which obviously sounds normal, and might seem fine.
However, if I have not restarted my computer at all, around the 10gb download mark, my computer starts running extremely slow, while System and Compressed Memory starts maxing out Memory usage on Task Manager.
Any help is appreciated, as I obviously have not found anything in regards to this myself. It is possible I just haven't looked hard enough, but regardless!
If there is any information you'd like to ask of me, I'll do my best to check this post as often as possible. Thanks!

Do you use feeds or slices?
Go to Tools >IE Options >Bottom of Content Tab >Click on Settings >Remove check mark, if checked at Automatically check feeds or slices. Then test.

Also go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features\ Turn Windows Features on or off in left pane. Let it populate and check if any Internet Information Services are selected or anything you think would do a call to the internet, then unselect them, and test.

These first two need a process running in order to call out on intervals to check on what they were set to check for. Ergo, the process you're seeing in task manager.

There is a possible hotfix, but I hesitate to mention it because you need to:

Quote:
analyze the call stack of the process when this issue occurs, you notice that a thread is blocked in the ntdll!NtReleaseKeyedEvent() function.

For that you would need a utility like Process Explorer or PsTools.

I encountered this problem once before in Windows XP Home edition SP3.
I looked it up and found some suggestions. According to the sites, it usually occurs when you leave the auto update on.
Now I have moved to Windows 7 Ultimate, and encounter this problem again.
The sites from before said that those solutions will only work for XP. How am supposed to fix this problem on 7?

A:svchost CPU Usage and Memory Leak Problem

sorry, but there's a more pressing matter now.
I kept end process to the svchost but it keep reappearing. I was fed up and decided to move the file svchost.exe out of system 32.
Things were back to normal for some time (for around 2 hours probably), and then my laptop went to bluescreen.
Now I can't turn it on. There's only blackscreen with my pointer there and can be moved around but do nothing.
Should I just reinstall the OS?

For about the past week now, my RAM usage has been gradually increasing overtime. Basically after an hour another GB will be in use by apparently nothing and that will keep repeating and I can't clear it unless I restart my PC. I've tried scanning for virus' with Malwarebytes and tried refreshing the paging file and neither worked. I've looked through task manager (with all processes shown) and resource manager and neither of them add up to what the current amount of RAM that is being used.

Any help would be appreciated as this is starting to get annoying.

Cheers,

A:RAM usage increases overtime (Memory leak?)

- Did you install a program about one week ago ? Some programs simply have lousy memory management, they claim more and more memory without releasing any of it.
- The file cache could be growing & growing and the (size of the) cache doesn't show up in Task Manager. The file cache isn't part of the "Standby" memory but part of the "In Use" memory. (See Resource Monitor)
- Install PcWinTech's Cleanmem. It reduces memory usage every 15 minutes (or any other user defined interval) and let it also collapse the file cache. (Google's Chrome & Firefox are very stubborn and won't release too much memory).
http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem
http://www.pcwintech.com/about-cleanmem
Cleanmem pushes data from "In Use" to "Standby" and NOT to the pagefile. And the larger the "Standby" is, the better.

Keep me posted.

Hello everyone I've been having a very weird problem recently in which I BELIEVE is involving high physical memory usage Sometimes I will be doing things such as playing a game or watching a stream and my computer will run fine for a little while But at random times my computer will majorly slow down and sometimes even crash If it doesn't crash sometimes it will get so slow to the point where I have to hold down the power button and manually shut it down Every time my computer slows down I notice it is using a TON of physical memory It's actually happening right now My computer is going very slow and it's using GB memory out of physical Very high memory running usage, no programs usage high There are no big programs running right Very high physical memory usage, no high usage programs running now so I don't understand why it's being slow I hope someone is able to help Thank you for taking the time to read this Update I just tried to open chrome and the computer froze completely It would not unfreeze After leaving it frozen for a minute or two the screen went black This is becoming very frustrating

Hey!

So I have a PC with 8GB of RAM. When I sit at the desktop the PC uses about 50% of RAM. The problem that I can't find the source of this in the process manager. I have downloaded poolmon and I do see something taking up alot of space(250MB) but I can't locate the source of this as I have never experienced this before.

I have tried to search on google but I have been unable to find a guide that explains how to solve this issue in a clear manner.

Here is an image of my poolmon results.

Ok I am literally KILLING myself over this I installed Windows Bit over XP around a month ago and it was so good that I recommended it to my brother who was previously on XP too We got him a copy of the bit version as he has only gb of memory and he installed it on his machine However he constantly had high CPU and RAM usage Even though no programs were obviously taking it all up in his task manager and it was making his computer sluggish and slow Everything was freezing and hanging and it was a nightmare I spent a day looking all over the net to find out the problem but could not fix it at all no matter what the hell I tried So he reverted back to Windows XP A nice waste of money on Windows His Windows XP now runs smoothly and is all as it was Suddenly today after my brother connected to my Windows homegroup or workgroup rather through his Windows XP machine my computer got the EXACT same problem as he had ages ago I have been browsing Google all day downloading s t changing things in my computer trying EVERY possible fix that people have CPU usage!!! 7 usage memory random and high physical Windows suggested and Windows 7 random CPU usage and high physical memory usage!!! that sound legit Nothing works So now all of a Windows 7 random CPU usage and high physical memory usage!!! sudden my computer is sluggish games are jumpy and jittery video rendering times are slooooooow Here is Windows 7 random CPU usage and high physical memory usage!!! a picture of my resource monitor You can see the physical memory usage being at I've ordered the memory usage of each service in highest to lowest I just CANT see where the problem is I've tried leaving my homegroup to see if that changes anything but it just says quot Windows couldn't remove you from your homegroup quot So I searched online tried all possible fixes with no avail I've scanned my computer for malware and viruses and nothing shows If you can help me you are by sure a god and I may have you kiss you repeatedly I have never been so frustrated as I do alot of memory dependant work on my computer and this is just pure horrible Here are some extra images that may help

A:Windows 7 random CPU usage and high physical memory usage!!!

I can tell you what is probably causing your problems. AVG.
When you are looking at memory, do not sort by Working set, sort by Hard faults.
Hard faults is what causes things to slow down. Plus you have plenty of memory not to worry about usage.

Greetings I formatted my computer and after installing windows again my physical memory in task manager is very high and cpu keeps jumping up and down I looked at the processes tab but noticed absolutely nothing taking abnormal memory private working set Then moved on to performance tab gt resource monitor and found svchost I think it was netsvcs in parenthesis Jumping Windows High Cpu Physical Usage Memory Usage, 7 hogging all the memory After ending the process I still have had high memory usage and surprisingly do not see a process anywhere in task manager with high numbers next to it so I have no idea what's happening I have noticed that my windows folder keeps increasing in size currently about gigs and a helper told me that it's normal because Windows 7 Jumping Cpu Usage, High Physical Memory Usage the updates in windows have a different compression method than windows and after however when I had previously installed windows fully updated my folder size was normal so I assume it can be done I originally posted in the Virus Trojan Spyware and Malware Removal Logs section however I did not find malware on my computer so unless it's very new malware I am certain windows is causing this problem For antivirus I am currently using a free trial of Norton Advice P S This is probably better for the hardware section but can constant high physical memory and cpu usage ruin my hardware I am avoiding using things that take up high cpu and memory right now and it's currently about gigs phy memory cpu jumping usually - up to

When you experience or encounter strange behavior, always check for new, unknown or suspicious processes in Task Manager. Most of the processes in Task Manager will be legitimate as shown in these links.List of common system processes found in XP's Task ManagerCommon system processes found in XP's Task ManagerTop System ProcessesAnytime you come across a suspicious file or one that you do not recognize, search the name using Google or the following databases:BC's Startup Programs DatabaseSystemLookup StartupList IndexFile Research CenterProcessLibrary.comDetermining whether a file is malware or a legitimate process sometimes depends on the location (path) it is running from. One of the ways that malware tries to hide is to give itself the same name as a critical system file. However, it then places itself in a different location on your computer. Another techinique is for the process to alter the registry and add itself as a Startup program so that it can run automatically each time the computer is booted. A file's properties may give a clue to identifying it. Right-click on the file, choose Properties and examine the General and Version tabs.Tools to investigate running processes and gather additional information to identify them and resolve problems:AnVir TaskManager FreeProcess ExplorerSystem ExplorerProcessHackerProcess MonitorsvchostViewerThese tools will provide information about each process, CPU usage, file description and its path location If you right-click on a file and select properties, you will see more details. If you cannot find any information, the file has a legitimate name but is not located where it is supposed to be, or you want a second opinion, submit it to Jotti's virusscan or VirusTotal. In the "File to upload & scan" box, browse to the location of the suspicious file and submit (upload) it for scanning/analysis.-- Then post back with the results of the file analysis.

Hello all New member here I have had an issue with my PC since I quot upgraded quot to windows earlier this year that is driving me batty Unfortunately I upgraded the hardware motherboard CPU and RAM at the same time so I can't rule out a hardware issue completely The issue stuck around despite a total hard disk wipe and reinstall from scratch I'm a relative noob as far as this sort of troubleshooting and I'm really not sure how to proceed My normal modus operandi has been to simply wipe and start over if I ran into serious enough issues but that did not work this time always Leak. runs Memory of Probable System memory out Months of google searches have not really yielded any progress so I thought it could not hurt to ask here So the problem Basically the longer the system runs the more memory it uses Eventually it freezes up and itf you let it alone long enough after this starts it will finally reboot itself Doing Probable Memory Leak. System always runs out of memory anything intensive hastens the process of memory drain basically the harder it works the faster it happens If I am using the PC hard it only takes a couple hours to Probable Memory Leak. System always runs out of memory burn through all GB If I am away for days with nothing but background processes running it takes a few days but it eventually crashes and reboots The only thing that might be slightly out of the ordinary for most users is the fact that I use the PC as my TV and DVR through Windows Media Center and the use of a Silicondust HD Homerun Prime cablecard tuner Other than that it's pretty basic stuff on my PC I don't do any gaming these days and usually the hardest workout the machine gets is downloading large files like movies I will try to attach a few snapshots of task manager etc as I gather you folks can make more sense of them than I can If you need anything else please do not hesitate to ask I am sick of rebooting my PC all the time to avoid crashes Any and all help would be sincerely appreciated Alan

Troubleshooting not returned to the system even if the browser is closed and re-opened Right now for example things Troubleshooting Excessive Memory Use (Memory Leak?) after playing vid. are Troubleshooting Excessive Memory Use (Memory Leak?) after playing vid. working fine I rebooted Troubleshooting Excessive Memory Use (Memory Leak?) after playing vid. my system a couple hours ago but have not played any videos I have Adobe Lightroom running Picasa Chrome and Canary currently web browser windows open with tabs open Task Manager currently shows me using GB of ram that seems pretty reasonable to me Normally my system will keep running properly if a program is closed memory is freed up right up until I start to play any videos YouTube Netflix etc then it will start using up more memory Of course I expect it to use more memory during playback However even if I restart the browser the memory does not get freed back up For example just prior to the reboot with everything closed I was using right around GB of ram Once I rebooted I was using something GB of ram prior to opening any programs However once I start playing some videos I never seem to be able to get my ram freed back up again unless I reboot the whole system This is not just a problem with how much memory the system shows as being available I frequently actually run out of memory Task Manager will show me as using around GB and then everything starts swapping out like crazy I'm not a programmer but to me this seems like some sort of memory leak issue perhaps from Flash Is there anything that I might be able to do other than to re-boot the entire system after I play a video to get the memory back again We often use the computer as our TV and one of the monitors is playing something just about every night so rebooting gets to really be a pain Thanks so much for your time Jamie Dolan

A:Troubleshooting Excessive Memory Use (Memory Leak?) after playing vid.

Have you looked in Chromes own task manager to see if you can find a tab using excessive ram?

Using the Task Manager in Chrome Browser

See if indeed closing the video tab actually deletes the listing from the task manager perhaps?

what windows are you using? You Can try adaware and spybot tools [links below].
Alsp go to start/run/ type
msconfig
Then see if you have to many of your own added programs loading up in the StartUp tab section.

My 17 year old daughter built this desktop about 2 years ago. She thinks she has a problem with RAM.
I think she has too much junk running. Can anyone steer us in the right direction to analyze her performance?
I have attached a snapshot of her Task Manager.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,

A:High Memory Usage

There's nothing unusual about RAM in that pic. She has 16 GB of RAM, more than enough for 99% of users. Most of it cached. Looks normal.

Post a pic of processes tab sorted by CPU usage.

Post a pic of Resource Monitor memory tab sorted by working set.

Post a pic of startup tab of msconfig.

Has she run Disk Cleanup or any anti-virus/anti-malware scans?

Do Nothing! Simple yes? Good. Stop worrying about memory until you actually have performance issues that can be tracked back to memory usage.

Greetings,

I have a PC I built 3 years ago and lately I've noticed high memory usage. Here are my PC specs:
Win 7 w/ sp 1
Ram 4 GB (3 GB usable)
AMD Phenom II X4 3.21 Ghz

So far, I've ran virus scan (Avast Internet Security), restarted the machine to eliminate other processes from other user, closed all apps on machine (only Chrome is open). As of now I have 73 Processes running, CPU Usage is at 11% and physical Memory at 89%. Does anyone have any suggestions or need other information to help troubleshoot the problem

After I boot up my Envy 17, and do nothing but let it sit for a few minutes, the memory usage goes up to 50-55%, and CPU usage climbs to 25-35%, for no apparent reason. The fan starts blowing like crazy, and the system slows. I look under task manager processes, there are like 80 of them going. No applications running. Why is this happening? How do I fix it? thanks.

Hi, I have a Lenovo U410 Touch laptop. My problem is that the memory usage seems extremely high and it seems to be causing problems when I tab between programmes. I have 4GB of memory and even now with nothing other than Firefox and Task Manager actively open memory usage is 69% (2.7GB).

This seems very high to me. There are a ton of background processes running, only some of which I have any idea what they are doing. [email protected] attached a list of the processes running now.

ANy help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi ive been noticing my memory usage has been idling pretty high and I cant tell if its normal or not. Im not home right now so I cant provide specifics but I have 4gb of memory and and im usually idling at around 35-45% usage. I have windows 7 and disabled a ton of non-essential services and am down to 33 (includes all users).

I noticed svchost is taking up 170mb and on my brothers computer, only 50mb. Idk if thats suspicious or not but my svchost has only 5 services and his about 8-10 (I disabled a lot). So im confused as to why mine takes up so much more memory.

Also the main thing is I added up the usage from all the processes displaying from all users and its only 450-500mb, yet im idling at 40% usage which is 1.6gb. Is this normal for the task manager to not add up to the total usage?

A better way of understanding what possibly can create a memory leak is using the Details tab of Windows 8 Task Manager or the integrated in the system Performance Monitor. For best acknowledgment of how the things are going at the current moment, I suggest posting a screenshot from set down Process Explorer with Private Bytes tab enabled.

Hello,
Looking at the task manager I see that about 50 % of RAM memory is used and about 20 % of cpu.
The computer does nothing. Not a sigle app opened. Only the background tasks. I disabled almost anything from start-up. I even closed some services.

This I believe happened after installing a trial of Adobe Dreamweaver. Could it be the problem or is it a coincidence. It may conflict with other application?

Any help/suggestion would be very much appreciated.

Edit: I have 2 GB RAM. 2.6 GHz dual core cpu and windows 7 installed.

That's in the expected range for Vista. Not much you can do except add memory (if you can). Remember that with a 32-bit system the max memory used will be around 3.0 or 3.5 GB.

A:High Memory usage help

Hi,
Unfortunately that Pic does not tell the whole story i.e.
What type of Video card do you have? Some of that RAM might be used by your Vid. Card.
How much RAM do you have?
What other applications do you have running in the background as in your Startup, take a look at your MsConfig/Startup tab and see how many apps. you have Starting up when you open your machine.
Etc...

lately ive been getting weird spikes on my computer, not on the internet but just my computer itself seems slow. it seems that my physical memory is always around 50% - 60% but my cpu is 0%. i also noticed that its running 60-70 processes, not at startup, but when im just at average computer use. i took a screen shot of my task manager and my resource manager:

i also have hijackthis if needed. i was concerned about such high use of the "hardware reserved", 2089mb...seems high to me? ive seen other posts on here with half of that and my friend has 3mb hardware reserved. sorry for the wall of text and thanks for help in advance.

A:high memory usage

Welcome to Seven Forums tsoaf. Those numbers don't seem bad, it's just all relative to how much memory you have. See my numbers, but I have twice as much memory.

I have 63 processes running. I think 2 gig memory is the minimum these days, but as long as you aren't running out of memory when you are doing tasks, you are ok. memory is there to be used, and based on the comparison, I don't think your usage is high, but more that you could use another 2 gigs

A Guy

Edit:

Hmmm, just looked at your pic again, and it seems to say you have 4gig, but only 2 are available? If you fill in your system specs, we can dig deeper. Let us know how much memory is installed, it may be that only half is being used?

I assume its a malware attack and hence, would need some help in removing whatever infected me. Would appreciate if someone can guide me through it.
I would be starting off with the following steps and will post the logs as it goes:

hey guys, my computer has been using alot of memory and cpu usage lately and its mostly from my desktop or the internet. When i check my processes, its mainly explorer and dwm (desktop windows manager) thats using the most. I have ran alot of scans already and no malware was found. The guy advised me to start a new topic in the WIN7 threads. heres a link of all my logs http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic425806.html/page__gopid__2466153#entry2466153

any help would be great, id love to have my cpu running at full speed again

A:Memory usage VERY high

Maybe you should start managing your startup programs and removing Spybot. Do you have the Mcafee paid or trial version? Do you experience lags when you say your CPU or Memory is high in task manager?

Hi, im new here.i found the thread about the high memory usage. but the last post is 400++days ago. and i cant find answer for my problem. so i decide to post a new 1.

Firefox showing high memory usage. Is it normal? because, it never happened before untill i have the blue screen problem. i forgot to take the screen shot. when i open other program, aLogin.exe (online game from IGG), the memory rise up till 100k and sometime reach 200k too. it also never happened before.before this, i can open up to 9 windows of aLogin without any problems and the memory usage is around 20k to 35k only. can someone help me out with this problem?

A:Memory Usage Too High

Firefox usage is a bit high but not unreasonable. aLogin also a tic high.

I have seen firefox use upward of 450 Mb. It depends on how many addons and tabs open.

hello all, I found my PC really slow after a while of use, checking Task Manager found that my total percent of memory was at 99% while playing BF3, funny thing today also 2 friends had exactly the same problem, friend's PC system X79 SSD RAID nvidia 670 32gb, my other friend's PC intel 1356 HHD ati 6870 6gb trichannel and my system AMD 790fxt SSD ati 7970 16gb we all are running Windows 8 PRO 64bits fresh install.

I been searching google about this issue, some people claim is AMD CCC issue other say to disable superfetch also some posts about page file... all this tell me that is a memory leak under windows 8 and not a hardware related.

found this post at microsoft community Memory Usage in Windows 8 - Microsoft Community

So far only fix that work is full reboot
I will update with screenshots if I get the memory leak

Welcome
Lets start with a memory test.

Guide to using Memtest86+ - Geeks to Go Forums Test for 6 passes, then test each stick separately for 6 passes.
If you did not test for malware, run your updated antivirus for a full scan
Download and run a full scan with malwarebytes.

Hello,
since quite a long time pasted after installing Win 7, many programs were installed and removed. For the past few weeks I noticed huge computer processing slow down. Turned off almost all startup programs, used TuneUp and CCleaner, defragmentation, but nothing helped. Just a little. Now on idle my pc uses 600-800 out off 1000 MB Ram. Even after closing most unneeded processes. CPU usage on idle is very low, while working, not very high. But lack of available Ram slows the pc very much. Btw, both C and D volumes are half empty. Also I use external HDD, but that shouldn't affect anything. Any ideas?

A:High memory usage on W7

When running Disc Cleanup have you been selecting the "more Options" tab and deleting all but the most recent System Restore?
More RAM would help but also check your Paging File setting.

Is 1.36 GB memory used abnormally high for 7? i was scouting through what little system information i could find (never had vista, kinda lost on some things) and i saw that my video card is sharing some system memory. then on the performance tab of the task manager i only see 3038 MB of RAM total, but i've got 4 GB installed.

My system isn't running slow or anything like that i just thought it odd that the memory usage was hovering at a near constant 46% used. The amount that my video card says is shared is like 1263 MB, is that counted towards the total used memory (cached included)? or is that 1263 MB sitting in the page file for later use?

I've got a FX-60, 4 GB of RAM, and a 500 MB 7900 GTX OC, does my video card really need to have another 1.2 GB shared from system memory?

A:High memory usage?

It's pretty normal I suppose. The reason it's only accessing 3.3 gb of memory and not the full 4 is normal for a 32 bit OS. If you had 64 bit it would be like mine shown here.

I recently installed another 256M of memory (512 total). I have also installed a memory monitor. It weems that I am constantly using about 300M of memory. In looking at the Task Manager, the total services running only add up to about 100M. How can I find out what is using the memory? I am running XP Home.

Thanks,

Howdy. I'm running Win 7 & every time I open Int. Ex. (even when absolutely nothing else is running) I get a flag from Norton saying "High Mem Usage by Int Ex". I was thinking of getting another mem stick but someone suggested I could divert more of the mem resources to Int Ex. They didn't know how, though
Appreciate the help

You appear to have a Dell laptop.
What model name and model number is it?
What's the 7-character "service tag" number on the sticker?

It appears to be running Windows 7(64-bit) with only 2 GB(2048 MB) of RAM.
It it supports more RAM than that, you need to add more.

It may have too many programs auto-starting and running in the background.

It may be infested with malware, spyware, etc..

It may be running too hot.

The list of issues can go on.

So, it's exactly as the title says,
I downgraded back down to windows 8 after feeling some sluggishness with my windows 10 OS.
It started off fine, but once I started downloading and installing necessary windows update files, I noticed once again the sluggishness I felt before, except this time my System Disk which is also my SSD drive, was being used up to 100% while my CPU was completely fine

Can someone please help me out in this scenario.

Also when I connect to the internet i get redirected to other sites. Sometimes when I reboot my computer I get a generic host process for win32 message. When I run my anti-virus program it says 0 threats detected but sometimes say PDF Malware: Pidief detected and quarantined but the problem still continue. I am new to the site and have little computer knowledge any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello breal,do these please, post the logs and update me.Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator. If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.Click the Start Scan button.Do not use the computer during the scanIf the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Download Link 1Download Link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen:Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.Exit MBAM when done.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.T... Read more

Hello and To BC!

Look under the process tab in the task manager and find out what process is using the most resources. Does this same situation happen when google chrome is closed?

Hi Covalence,

Please open up your task manager (CTRL + ALT + DEL > Task manager) and go into the Processes-tab. Press the "Mem-usage" column so that all the highest numbers are at the top. Take a screenshot and attach it to your next post (upload it into the post, no external sites).

A:High Physical memory usage

Hello boki and welcome to Seven Forums.

Windows 7 has a built in tool that can help figure out how your RAM is being used. It's call Resource Monitor. If you could post a screenshot of the Memory tab it will give a better idea of how RAM is being allocated during game play.

Resource Monitor

Windows 7 is not like previous operating systems. It has a different way of using RAM. It tries to use as much RAM as you have available because "unused RAM is wasted RAM."

You could also try running the Disk Cleanup utility, especially deleting unnecessary system files (step 5.)

Hi, I'm new here. :)

For some reason, when my computer has been on for a while, the memory usage goes really high.

I have 7gb of memory, and if sitting idle, after say, 5 or so hours, the usage will be over 6b! I've been restarting to remedy the problem, and it works, but only for a short amount of time. Now I really need a fix.

Thanks for your help!

A:Extremely High Memory Usage?

Hi,

When this happens next time, can you check the processes and see what processes/programs are using up the memory? (See pic below)

Using WIN8.0. I am plagued by a continuing error or malady. Popping up is a window saying ?High Memory Usage? followed by ?COM.Surogate.? Sometimes a second window pops up with, ? High Disk Usage by Host Processes?. All of this makes my PC run very slow and causes freezing and other problems. Have run System Mechanic and resolved some issues but the problem is still there.

How to I correct for all of this? Thank you, eddie460

Hey guys, just installed a new Samsung 850 EVO SSD Dual Booting with Linux. Used what I believe is called a Retail Version of Windows 7 to avoid all the junk that was included with the Toshiba Disks. Seems recently Windows 7 is running at 50+% CPU and 30+% at Idle right after boot, is this normal for an SSD? And, I left it like this for like an hour just to see if it would calm down.

Right now running 82% CPU and 51% Memory with only Three Tabs open and nothing else...using Chrome. One my Yahoo Mail, Youtube music, This site and my Bookmarks Tab. I've looked around at what is running but nothing seems abnormal, any suggestions?

Hi,
This is windows updates time
Micro... has been playing cat and mouse on these download links so if they do not exist yet you might have to use the catalog to get them if the links don't work,
When manually installing updates you need to switch your update settings to Never check for updates and restart the machine first.

Make sure KB3020369 is installed
Win-7 32 bit
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=46827
Win-7 64 bit
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=46817

Then manually install KB3172605
Win-7 32 bit,
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=53335
Win-7 64 bit,
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=53332

After switch your windows update settings back to what you had prior and manually check for updates and the rest should show up shortly.

You must use Internet explorer to download from the catalog
Microsoft Update Catalog
You also have to right click ie and use run as administrator don't ask me why but the 2 recommended browser add-ons won't install unless you do,

My memory usage seems very high recently. My fan runs ALL the time. It will stop for about 30 seconds and then kick back on for about another minute and repeats that cycle. Also, I have 80 processes running, is that too many? My memory usage is around 66% almost all the time. I'm just wondering if these numbers are too high or if there is something that I can do to fix them. Thanks.

A:Memory and CPU usage seems oddly high

- Install PcWintech's Cleanmem. It reduces memory usage every 15 minutes.
- Chrome is known to use LOTS of memory over time and has a lousy memory management.
- Run Piriform's Speccy and post a snapshot of your system (File >> Publish Snapshot) and post the weblink that pops up in your next reply.

Two gigs of ram is the absolute minimum (64 bit) for just your basic surfing. Add gaming and you will soon run out of memory.

Problem solved.

It was the Gigabyte Online Management software that comes with the motherboard in the background continuously causing snmp.exe to run (and at increasing memory).
