CD/DVD writable drive not recognized by OS after Win10 upgrade.

Q: CD/DVD writable drive not recognized by OS after Win10 upgrade.

I have a SATA-1 TSSTcorp TS-H653 (not sure whether it is an F, G, H etc.) CD/DVD writable drive in an Inspirion 537s. I recently upgraded to Windows 10 Pro from Windows 7 Ultimate, but the drive is not recognized by the OS. However, the drive does show up in BIOS. I have searched and cannot find a driver for this drive. Any advice or assistance?

Preferred Solution: CD/DVD writable drive not recognized by OS after Win10 upgrade.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm having exactly the same problem with the same drive as well. Baffling

Post WIndows 10 upgrade - all is well except my DVD drive, HP DVD-RAM GH40, is not detected by the OS now. The secondary ROM drive is noted and functioning. Each, though, is accounted for in the BIOS but Device Manager is helpless. It doesn't know it's there and new hardware searches can't find it.How can I get it back online?

My desktop is an older eMachine 1360G with Acer motherboard with 8 GB ram. I had upgraded it from 7 to 10 in July with the 500GB hard drive that was in the machine at that time. I had downloaded Win10 to a thumb drive and used it to do the upgrade. Then the drive died and it sat at a tech's worktable for a couple of weeks. When I got it back it had a new 1TB drive in it, but with the Win7 that originally came with the machine. I still have the thumb drive with the Win10 install on it.
So my question is - Can I use that thumb drive to do the free upgrade or am I frozen out of free Win10?

A:Can still use Win10 thumb drive to upgrade from Win7 after July 29?

Might want to chat online with a MS rep and see what your options are.

Hi.
Wondering if anyone can tell me if there is a way to verify that my Win7 PC has digital entitlement for Win10.
I have cloned my hard drive onto another hard drive, as the original is making noises, and it might be time to end its life.
I upgraded to Win10 on the original hard drive, then rolled it back to Win7. That meant that i could upgrade to Win10 again at a later time.
Then I cloned the hard drive.
I can see that Win7 is activated on the new HDD, but i want to know if it has the digital entitlement to upgrade to Win10, or whether that would have been lost in the cloning process (or whether the change in hardware will prevent an upgrade - which I doubt).
Thanks.

I just upgraded to Windows 10 as I planned to use the weekend to sort out any issues I might encounter during the upgrade. Well boy did I ever. My Seagate 3TB drive decided it no longer wanted to be recognized by Windows anymore. It shows up as a failed/deactivated drive in Disk Management as seen here: http://i.imgur.com/5EOU4Jf.png It also shows up in Speccy as a physical drive. I currently have 2TB of data on there (including an OS image I did just before the upgrade as an extra prep step), so reformatting the volume is not an option until I get the data off.

Any advice on how to recover my data?

Hello.

I have a storebought CD that I can't read on one of my computers.

On laptop A (a Toshiba), I put in this CD and the CD-writable Toshiba drive won't detect the CD. I put the CD in the external DVD-writable drive, and that one doesn't detect the CD either.

On laptop B (a Dell), I put the CD in the plain-Jane CD-Rom drive (not writable like the other drives) and the CD can be read. I plug the external DVD-writable drive into laptop B, and the CD is not recognized.

So... do you think this CD is encoded to not be read on writable drives? Anyone heard of such a thing?? Any patches for this at all (because I love to listen to music on my laptop).

Good Afternoon:
I'm trying to copy our family photos onto a CD as a backup. When I put the writable CD-R into my drive, nothing happens. I usually get a windows box that pops up with a bunch of choices. Games, movies, audio CDs, etc all work fine. All writable media whether CD or DVD doesn't get recognized at all. I was messing around just yesterday with a program that puts photos into a little movie viewing format and it wrote that to the DVD just fine. Does anyone know why the pc can't see these writable discs? I have XP Home SP2 and the drive is a HP DVD Writer 300c. The unit is fairly old, but has always worked well. This happened quite a while ago and someone in this forum helped me get it going--but I don't remember how. ( Thanks for any help.

I am trying to copy photos to a CD-R disc so I can go to WalMart and make prints.
I however get the following message :"Please insert a writable disc in drive E:" and can not copy photos to disc. I tried several different types of photos, with the same result.
I did manage to copy photos to a CD-RW disc but the printer at WalMart refuses to use this type of disc.
Any ideas.

A:Solved: Mapped network drive on same PC not writable

I have a fix, I use psubst from here:
http://code.google.com/p/psubst/

This works (it has to be run as administrator with the /P switch to make it persistent), but requires a reboot for explorer to actually see the drives. I came across another utility which does allow the drives to be seen in explorer immediately:

http://www.ntwind.com/software/utilities/visual-subst.html

This partially works in that the drives immediately show up in explorer and are writable, but drives are not reconnected across reboots. So eventually I found this page detailing why:

Hello,

I received the free win 10 upgrade from an invitation to reserve the upgrade. The other day, a Ransomware hit me, and though I believe I may have immediately tracked & deleted all affected files I could find, I hardly believe I could be so skilled as to be successful.

I had this happen last year, and ended up formatting the unit, and reloading Win 7. I don't want to have to go back to 7, but how do I get another Win 10? Is there a key I need to find & save? A free site that I can get a copy on a flash drive to load from? Any help would be appreciated. I have no clue how to proceed since it's an online download, and once formatted, the unit won't be able to get online without the OS

Thanks

you can download the newest build of windows 10 > http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softw...load/windows10

boot from the setup media - remove every partition (wipe) the HDD

and clean install widows 10

since you already had win7 and windows 10 on that PC - if asked for product key - just skip that screen

Is there a feature in win 10 that can be turned off to avoid causing the crash?Atleast we can keep up with the updates!! Need some help to understand what the actual issue is and if there has been some workaround found by now.SD

Had similarities on my pc.

Goto BIOS, there you have 4 options.

Primary Master
Secondary Master

Primary Slave
Secondary Slave

Set it as follows:

Primary Master -----> Main Boot HDD
Secondary Master -----> EMPTY

Primary Slave -----> CD/DVD RAM
Secondary Slave -----> Secondary backup HDD
Hpe it helps!

Your tech. friend may have mis-understood when you need a password.
If you are at home and only you and you trusted family have access to you computer, there is no need whatsoever for a logon password.
The only time I have ever needed one is when I was using my own laptop on clients site when I was contracting and I would leave it on the desk over lunch.

Because you may find that you need to install the Windows 10 driver for it after upgrading. With most notebooks there are two or three different adapters that could be installed. It helps to what is installed in yours.  Use the search functiion in the forum and search for windows 10 wifi driver. You will notice that many members did not take the time to either locate the driver or know what is installed.

My wife's computer could not upgrade to win 10 cause it had an old video card. I upgrade motherboard and video card. Win 7 is registered, but can not upgrade. Is there anyway to erase that upgrade box and redue it?

A:Help with win10 upgrade

Check for any left over files or drivers from your old video card. Windows is still finding it somewhere. Check your device manager 1st just to see if its listing 2 video cards, then check your program folders for any left overs. Also just for backup reasons, download a program on this forum called Showkey which will give you the information on your currant Windows Key, incase you need it to upgrade to Windows 10.

I have an older laptop (probably 6-7 years old, Dell Inspiron running Windows 7) and its been running fairly slow lately. I saw a notice that today is the last day to upgrade to Win10 for free. Just looking for some good advice on whether or not I should even consider upgrading.

My first thought is that, with an older machine, I probably have a lot of junk on my hard drive causing the slowness so I need to clean it up (which means I'll miss the "today is the last day" bit...but do I really care?). I also think maybe my processor won't be able to handle the new version, but not sure if that's really a concern or not.

Can I ask for some advice? Thanks

whats the exact model and also the service tag number
make sure there are windows 10 drivers available for the PC

you could always make a recovery set of DVDs (if you havent already , and i would advise you make them anyway) and do a windows 7 clean install

you may have a lot of startups or even malware on the PC slowing it down

Depending on what it is you may be able to use the new AMD Crimson drivers instead. I have a L50D-C-13G and I abandoned the catalyst drivers for Crimson drivers and my machine is running great. I have an A10-8700P Carrizo R6 with windows 8.1 and it works great for me. The driver lists compatible hardware, read through it and see if your machine is supported.

Hi all, i have a Precision M4700 with windows 7 SP1 OEM, i'm confused, can i install windows 10 pro for free or do i have to purchase an upgrade license (if i do it now, before the 29th July) ?
Consider i work in an Enterprise environment but the license applied to my PC is the OEM, not the one under Corporate agreement.
Thanks for a clarification/confirmation.

HIRYU79,
Yes, you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free. You will also need to update the drivers to Windows 10 as well. Click the link below to download the drivers for your M4700.

hi everyone!
i am runing a toshiba satelite using windows 7. the laptop originally came with windows 8, i couldnt bear the change so i switched back to 7 and today i want to get a legit copy of windows 10 -- that will last for over 1 year -- installed after reinstalling windows 8 (my win 7 isn't licensed). after running "ProduKey" i found a "windows BIOS OEM key" that apparently belongs to the OEM win 8.

can i install 8.1 with my win 8 OEM product key?
can i upgrade directly from windows 8 to 10 or do i need to update from 8 to 8.1 and from there upgrade to 10?
can i use the retail win 8 istallation files with an OEM product key or do i need the toshiba OEM installation files?
thank you very much for any help!

A:in need of help with OEM win 8 istall and upgrade to win10

No need to install windows 8 - just install windows 8.1 via ISO and then upgrade to windows 10 via ISO
windows 10 just needs to see the activation of windows 7 or windows 8.1 to activate itself..

The free upgrade applies to qualified computers that are running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8/8.1.

It does NOT apply to computers that are running Windows Vista.

My current computer has a retail copy of Win8. I'm building a new PC this weekend and I want to utilize the free upgrade to Win10 from my current retail version of 8, but I understand the free upgrade is tied to hardware.

Would my best option be to migrate Win8 to the new PC and upgrade from there? Alternatively, would I be better to just upgrade to 10 now and then migrate to the new PC afterwards? I imagine I can just discover the product key using something like Belarc Advisor, but then I don't know if the key will be accepted for activation on the new hardware... Thoughts?

Hi everyone, this is my first visit and post and I hope you can assist
where others have failed. I have tried to install Win 10
on two machines and neither of them would work, both telling me that the CPU was not
good enough or words to that effect.

PC1 has Intel Pent G3220 3.00 GHz Haswell chip.

PC2 has Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00 GHz.

Both of these are way over the required
minimum spec so I cannot understand why Win10 will not install.

A:Unable to upgrade to Win10 or even try it out.

Welcome to the forum. Its likely either your cpu cant handle PAE, NX and SSE2 or its not set in the bios

To test for PAE, NX, and SSE2, download a program called "CPU-Z" and run it. On the main window, look under the "Instructions" heading for SSE2, EM64T (which also indicates the processor supports PAE) and either VT-d or VT-x, which is required for NX support. If you have all 3, then you are good to go.

Hello!

I have a strange issue where after a full shut down in Windows 10, the motherboard is still delivering power to my connected devices such as my headset, keyboard, mouse and monitors i.e. all the lights on these devices are still on, whereas previously in Win7 they would all turn off.

I did an in-place upgrade from Win7-Win10 and adjusted no motherboard BIOS settings.

I've looked through the Win10 power options and can;t see anything relating to keeping devices on after a shut down. I assume this is so USB devices like phones and tablets can charge from USB when the PC is off? However I don;t need this feature if that's the intention.

Any ideas? Is windows 10 (vs win7) sending a different command back to the MB on a shutdown?

Hardware:
MB: Asrock P67 Extreme 6
CPU: Intel 2600k

A:Motherboard Power Still On After Win10 Upgrade

Some motherboards have a USB power feature even when the computer is switched on.
This sound like your issue. This can be adjusted in the BIOS settings.

Look in the BIOS for an option called EUP Turn it off.
Or maybe ErP Ready. Turn it on.

Edit: One more thought... when you installed the motherboard chipset drivers you may have installed a small program that allows for the charging of USB devices when the PC is off.

Hello,

A:How to recover Win10 Key (free upgrade from 8.1) ?

There is no free key. If your computer came with Windows 8.x, the key is in the bios. If you wish to install from the iso, do the install without activation, then once you get into the GUI, then do the activation and it will go through.

A:Can I upgrade h8-1230 from Win7 to Win10?

Greetings, Win 7 upgrades to Win 10 can be problematic with no easy way back to Win 7 unless you have a good image and bootable rescue media. The safest way to upgrade is to clone your existing Win 7 install to a second HDD or SSD. Connect only the cloned HDD to your PC to do the upgrade. Carefully read this entire article by Ed Bott to learn what needs to be done, and the time invested, if you have to rebuild Windows 7.  Win 10 may have the correct WLAN driver as well as all other drivers needed to run correctly or the upgrade could choke. You still have the original Win 7 install on the first HDD and can move on with your computing life. Cheers!

I have three computers in family that were given upgrades on the win7 family plan. One was just informed it was eligible for win10 upgrade. I think I made the mistake of custom install (for a clean install) instead of an upgrade and, related to other problems with windows update, I might have lost my activation on win7. Long story short, when I got to the point where win10 was installed and asking for a key I knew I had done a no no as, if I had done it correctly, I should not have been asked for a key. Of course I have no key but the win7 key and the install just sits there with no options but to input the key, which I don't have. What's my best course of action here?
thanks in advance

Hi all,

You were all so helpful in getting me through my last Win10 experience that I decided to give it another go

I just finished upgrading my kids' PC from Win7 to Win10, and since the upgrade the system has been hard-freezing -- no responsiveness from mouse or keyboard, screen frozen in place.

I'd heard that there may be issues with USB drivers (since the motherboard is fairly old), so I reinstalled the latest from Gigabyte earlier today, but no dice.

Any advice would as always be appreciated! Thanks in advance,

Like in the topic. Please help; after upgrading to Win 10 there is no keys-backlight after using the FN + Z combination. in bios (after upgrading) everything is fine; so when I turn backlight ON or OFF backlight runs out, but there is problem with Toshiba Funcktion Key driver I think.
I did the reinstalation of this driver, have others toshiba drivers for Win 10 installed (Eco, system driver etc.). Toshiba Funckction key runs for several seconds after system bots up, and is blocked (?) by something after jus several seconds. Weird and very annoying. The fun is that combination for screen brightness (FN + F6 or F7) and for volume up/down (FN + 3 / 4) runs perfectly vell. Backlight

I upgraded to win10 from win7 and started having a problem so I reverted back to win7. The problems from the upgrade followed me back with the revert to win7. The problems have to do with files and folders. I cannot create a file (doc) and save it to my documents file folder. I get a message "you don't have permission to save to this location" contact administrator. Incidentally, I'm the only user of this computer and always have been. I also get a message when trying to open an existing file " document file is locked for editing by (me or unknown user)
I'm totally confused not knowing how to get by this "file locked for editing" and "administrator privilege" needed.
Please tell me how to get around this.
Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

Thinkpad W540 will not upgrade to Win10 via Windows Update. Have also downloaded Media Creation Tool and Win10 iso file. All are 64-bit as is my processor and current Win8.1 Pro w/ Media Center. Have tried running MCT and iso as administrator with no success. I'm running out of time for a free upgrade! System has 8GB RAM and plenty of free space on hard drive. All 8.1 updates and patches are installed. All drivers are updated. Please help!

A:W540 - Win10 upgrade problems

OOPS -- saw you tried this already. ------------------------------------Have you tried obtaining the upgrade directly from Microsoft via their Win10 Media Creation tool? You will be able to download an entire .ISO file to burn a CD or create a bootable USB stick: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 This works better, sometimes, than the Windows upgrade pestering message.  Good luck!----------------------------------------- How are you fixed for disk space?  The upgrade needs qute a bit of extra room ~ 5 - 10 GB, at least, to store previous machine state.

I have multiple ThinkCentre M78-10BR workstations that I am upgrading to Windows 10 Pro 64-bit from Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. Some upgrade properly without any problems. I now have at least two stations that are having graphics problems. I can't seem to find a driver that is compatiblen with the on-board adapter.I have tried installing Radeon HD 8370D drivers from Windows Update, Lenovo Support, and from AMD's site. In all cases the system BSOD until I remove what was installed. I do have M78-10BR that upgrade perfectly with driver 15.200.1036.0.  I am at the point where I am downloading random x64 drivers from the Windows Update catalog hoping one will work.  Any other suggeestions?

I've been hesitant to upgrade any of my PCs from 7 to 10, because it is not a clean install.
I want to be able to upgrade, but from a clean install, so that I have the ability to revert back to a windows 7 capture of my system if I find 10 to be unsavory.

Is there a way to register my hardware or obtain a windows 10 license key, via an upgrade without having to go through the process of having 10 installed on top of my 7 system?

I decided to try and upgrade my HP Pavilion n sa laptop to Win from win The GET Windows quot Check Your PC quot report says that PC will work with Win There is nothing incompatible All Items are ticked I booted from a USB copy of the ISO created as says on not it. upgrade laptop HP I MS has my can't tested win10 by the Media Creation toolkit downloaded from MS and which upgrade my Desktop machine with no problems I accepted the License set the language and currency to UK and choose Upgrade to keep my files and Apps intact After a while of it checking my Laptop it showed a message quot The computer Started using the Windows Installtion media remove the media and restart windows so that it restarts normally then insert media and restart the upgrade quot Which I follow to the Letter then I get the message quot This PC can't run windows you can't MS says I can't upgrade my laptop as HP has not tested win10 on it. install windows on a USB Flash Drive using setup quot I had MS on my laptop for well over hours yesterday checking my PC meets minimum requirements and recreating Win images to update my machine They tried using other tools to create USB Flash drive images using MS says I can't upgrade my laptop as HP has not tested win10 on it. ISO burned to DVD and when they could not get it to work they say HP has not tested it with Win and to get them to do that and go back to MS On the HP website it says quot Note If you have a PC newer than August there is a good chance that your product can be upgraded Continue to the Microsoft Upgrade experience quot I bought the machine in December Has any one had the same problems or updated with no problems Where do I go now Will a clean install work or not Thanks Pete

A:MS says I can't upgrade my laptop as HP has not tested win10 on it.

I'll take a stab at this one..
From my experience with HP they do drop support for some of the products and you get stuck with the last OS that was installed on it.,. for example I had a nice desktop and it only would support Win7. When I tried to run Win8 on it .. well it would work fine but when I went to shut it down for the night and restart it that's when it would fail. Seems HP will not provide the updates to support new OS's. And this also applies to other OEM's.

Now having said all of that here is one option you have. Make sure you can make a system backup and backup your personal data. When that's done make sure you can restore the system and you're comfortable with the process.

At this point you could perform a clean instillation of 10 and see what happens. IF it fails to work properly just restore your PC to the previous settings with the backup you made.

... yes.. complicated but that's the best advice I can offer at the moment
And welcome to the forums

Jeff

When I power up again, I get nothing, just a blank screen. (I didn't even see Lenovo logo) After another power cycles I saw a "Preparing Automatic Repair" screen, then it went away and I am still stuck at a blank screen, from the sound of hard drive it's not reading.I also tried booting to "Windows boot manager" and hard-drive, both got blank screen.  Any help?

I have a friend with WIN7 64 bit just like me. He received a message about upgrading to WIN10. He clicked on the X at the top right. It downloaded the update but he did not install it. It keeps asking about installing the upgrade.
What can he do to remove the WIN10 upgrade download?

What can we do to permanently remove any request to upgrade. Neither of us are computer gurus. We need a step by step simple procedure to stop any updates or requests for WIN10.

We have no desire for WIN10. Thanks, Bob.

A:Disabling WIN10 Upgrade for WIN7 64 bit

The simplest way is to use a tool that automates the change of settings required to prevent the forced downgrade to Windows 10. Download the Never10 utility and it will disable the Win10 download. Extensive documentation and explanations are on its site.

Hi Graphicool1 I'm pretty sure you can just close the window and it'll wait until you launch the process manually to upgrade.

I Upgraded to Windows 10 in late June. I've never used my cd/dvd player, but when I attempted to, it did not play my cd. I also realized I had NO Audio when I played YouTube Videos, nor when I was  watching videos on FaceBook, nor any other website. Yesterday, while attending a GoToWebinar, I was given a choice of Audio Format, and I got SOUND!!! However, I could not repeat that success on YouTube, etc. I've been using the Earphone Jack in the Top Front of my Envy Tower. I do get Audio if I plug into a Rear Headphone Jack, but I want to know what's the Problem with the Front Jack, and my CD Player. I tried Updating my Audio Drivers, and anything else I could find, both on Windows And HP Support. Please: HELP!

I understand that in windows 8.1 dvd drivers were with among the chipset ones, so that it was enough re-installing them.
How to do the same in windows 10 system? Any idea?

i have a couple laptops that both came with windows 8.1 that im going to be selling. both were upgraded to win10 during the free upgrade period and both are currently on anniversary edition. when i look at the activation page, it says "Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your microsoft account". naturally, i will reset windows before sale so does this mean the new owner will not be able to activate windows 10 since it wont be done with my acct? do i need to track down restore media for each and put win8 back on?

A:is the free win10 upgrade transferable to another owner?

That's actually very interesting because historically and even when I had my stint on Windows 10, the license is tied to the machine, not the user. What I would do is reset those laptops and set them up with a local account and see if the activation status is an issue.

If I log in as the normal user or the Administrator account I get explorer exe closing and reopening about once per second I can get it to close permanently with Task Manager if I'm fast enough with the mouse MS has an article on this saying to run Windows Update because it's a known problem with an already released fix Unfortunately you can't run windows update without explorer exe running apparently They refuse to say what the name of the patch is or I'd download it and run it off loop-crashing upgrade Win10 explorer.exe my flash drive with task manager's run prompt Browse button So I either need that download a command to start the reversion back to Windows from a command line or a command line way to Win10 upgrade loop-crashing explorer.exe bring up the windows update UI that works in By the way the problem was found to be with file permissions on certain app data related folders and as soon as I tried to alter the permissions on those specific folders with problems it gave some generic error saying it failed So apparently I can't fix it manually

I'm trying to help my father upgrade his computer from win7 to win10, but service pack 1 in windows update keeps failing. I tried downloading and running the separate application for installing the service pack, but that fails as well. I even found another microsoft application that claims that it can prepare your system to accept the service pack 1, but that fails as well. (Despite all this, windows runs normally in all other respects that I have noticed). So it looks like updating to windows 10 using windows update is not going to happen.

My plan now is to use the media creation tool to download the .iso, burn that to a disk, and boot to it. Will that allow me to install windows 10, or is it still going to insist that I need service pack 1?

If that won't work, are there any other methods I could use?

Thanks
~Paul

A:Win7 to Win10 upgrade without service pack 1

You don't need service pack 1 to upgrade to Windows 10 using a DVD, USB flash drive or ISO file. It is only required to get it to show up in Windows update. The alternative method is a clean install:

Power off the notebook pressing and holding power button.

Then power up the unit again and press F12.
Now you should see the Advanced boot menu.

Here choose HDD recovery
Then choose language and keyboard.

Then Troubleshoot -> Advanced options ->Automatic Repair.

Hope it helps.... if not, you may need to recover the notebook back to factory settings...
