Fingerprint Reader from Microsoft

Q: Fingerprint Reader from Microsoft

Just bought this after a previous post and thought you guys might like a review.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7093058&type=product&id=1109233550650

This product is more for fun than actual security. You can use this for boot but you can still type in the password making it nothing more than a convience to log in. The only other thing that it does is remember login and password information. If I where to guess it creates a file of these passwords actually making your system a little less secure. However, saying you have a fingerprint scanner is cool in an odd sort of way.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,

Has anyone managed to get Microsofts stand alone fingerprint reader (Digital Persona) to work under windows 7?
I can get it to install and show working ok under device manager. I can also get the fingerprint reader to light up and seem to accept finger print but the recognition software doesn't seem to interpret the read image as when you try and setup under registration wizard it accepts the finger but just shows as incorrect scan.
The driver version I am using is Digital Persona 3.0.0.187.

Really hope there is a solution to this.

Tried compatibility mode, no luck. The biggest issue is the driver, if I had the proper driver for the reader I am sure it would work.

I purchased one of these and I cannot get the software to work with vista/windows 7 x64 operating system. It came with xp digitalpersona software. I looked and could not find drivers that worked with x64. I did get digitalpersona personal 4.0 it never had the drivers to work. Can anyone help.

A:Microsoft Keyboard with fingerprint reader

It says its not supported in W7 anymore your best chance is to install the vista 32bit driver if your running W7 32 bit or nuke it (new keyboard):

To install a driver OR program in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with vista/xp etc - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install.

Okay, I've been using this keyboard for a few months now. No problems whatsoever. Last night before I shutdown, windows promted me to install updates and shutdown. So I did. The next morning, I turn on my computer, and my keyboard doesn't work. My fingerprint reader works fine, just cant press any keys. I've tried looking in the Device Manager and there is no clue of my keyboard in use, besides the "Fingerprint Reader". I tried calling Microsoft and emailing them, and they rejected me both times. I've also tried uninstalling Intellitype Pro and reinstalling it, no luck. Can anyone help?

Hey,I have the Microsoft Fingerprint reader, however I don't like the software that came with it, as it slows down my computer when starting up (It says Windows is starting up... for a long time ). Does anyone know of any alternative finger print reader software that will work with the Microsoft fingerprint reader? Thanks!

Hello,

I have a problem with my Microsoft Fingerprint Reader. It worked fine until fairly recently when I ran a registry cleaner. Now it still works for logging in to websites, but I cannot log in to my account with it. When I try to use it, it tells me that it couldn't log in so I should change my password, however this has no effect.

I tried reinstalling the software, but nothing changed. My presumption is that a registry value has been deleted, but I have no idea what, and it seems odd that uninstalling and reinstalling the software wouldn't change this.

I am running XP SP2.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

A:Solved: Microsoft Fingerprint Reader Problem

Use the restore feature on the registry cleaner. You should always backup the registry before messing with it.

Good day,
Got my new and shiny E7470, but there is some trouble in paradise.
Is there a way to improve fingerprint reader? This thing is complete <profanity>. Half of the time it does not recognize the finger and when it recognized, it just takes too long. Updated all drivers and software to the latest, as per dell support suggestion. Still <profanity> :D My old Vostro 3350 FP reader works better in any case.
And the second question is, can the nfc read tags? Installed a couple of programs from windows store, but they do not show the tags info. When the sound is on and I place a tag on the reader, there is chime and that is all. Device manager shows, that device is active and working without problems.
NFC card should be Mifare Plus.

A:How to improve fingerprint reader and can the nfc reader read tags? e7470

Received my E7470 few days ago same exact problem. Go to Dell Support website download and reinstall the Chipset Drivers 10.1.1.9 ,A01
Seems there is problem after updating the ControlVault driver. This fixed my issue.

Hi Everyone, I have got my new probook last week and I am continuously facing this fingerprint reader issue, Whenever I try to enroll my fingerprint, it say "fingerprint reader is not connected"  .. I have tried different fingerprint drivers from hp official website but none of them worked..   Does anyone knows the exact solution?

@Usman_Ahmad? You can use the Fingerprint Driver listed for your notebook at your Driver pages:Synaptics (Validity) Fingerprint Sensor Driver Driver:sp74167 Synaptics-Validity Driver V4.5.321.0A Commentary Windows 10 provides its own "fingerprint logon" software program set.  You do not need any other security software installed to use the Windows 10 logon.  Windows 10 (fingerprint) logon does not work with websites; Windows logon will get you into the computer by letting you use a fingerprint to log into your account. Windows 10 requires that you assign a PIN number in PC Settings > Sign-in Options to enable the fingerprint scanner.  Why?  Microsoft has added this additional security to allow access to the fingerprint scanner / software.  It is best if you write down / remember the PIN -- you will need it if the fingerprint software fails - and this does happen.  Nice thing about PIN -- it is tied to the hardware; no one can use it to remotely log into your computer.  NOTE:  You still need a Windows Password assigned to your account (ie., your local password or your Microsoft password used for password logins) -- PIN and password are not related.  PIN allows you access to fingerprint and perhaps other login methods (Hello, Picture). Additional Local Admin AccountAdditionally, it might be a good idea to add an additional local account that has administrative privileges.  If you manage to lock yourself out of your main account, you can still log into your computer.  Do not enable fingerprint on the extra account; do give it a really good password and log into the account at least one time to allow the "Windows" setup to complete for the account.  Then, log out, let the account be, and hope you don't need it. In general - set up fingerprint logon:Create a Restore PointCreate your extra admin accountCreate a PIN for your main login accountEnable / enroll a couple of fingerprints (in Sign-in Options)Log out > log back in > check to see if the fingerprint scanner works If fingerprint is still balking (not working): This usually just means that the Windows fingerprint logon software cannot "see" your particular fingeprint scanner (built in fingerprint hardware).  Windows logon software is smart; it does not know about every single fingerprint scanner on the market.  In this case, install your (own computer's) Validity driver so the Windows Logon can make use of the driver information to enable your particular fingerprint scanner hardware.  Log in with PINOpen Settings > Sign-in Options > remove fingerprintsInstall your Synaptics-Validity Sensor DriverReboot and log inOpen Settings > Sign-in Options > enroll fingerprintsLog out > log back in > check results When you see a Post that helps you,Inspires you, provides fresh insight,Or teaches you something new,Click the "Thumbs Up" on that Post. Click my Answer Accept as Solution to help others find Answers.

Hi, I got a laptop with DigitalPersona software for the fingerprint reader. Now it works great with logging in and stuff. But it gives me problems with firefox in general. Also when I want to use it to log into facebook, I would try set it up, but it would always select the wrong username fields, and doesnt recognise the password field. HELP!! If you go to the facebook login, you will notice there is the username and password aread at the top, and the fields for becoming a member at the bottom.. IT ALWAYS SELECTS THE BOTTOM FIELDS, so its a bit weird. Please help!

A:Help with fingerprint reader

With Facebook, you have to be a bit creative to add its login to DigitalPersona fingerprint system. You have to do this only once, afterwards you can then use your fingerprint to login.

First, leave email and password fields empty and click Login.
New window opens telling about incorrect login credentials.
On this page you can setup fingerprint login normally.

Depends on the make and model of the system and the software that comes bundled with the fingerprint reader. That should be available with the documentation that came with your system.

There is no fingerprint reader. I can't decide if I should get one or not. I have prevoiusly used a laptop with a fingerprint reader but I just used it for logging on to windows.

Should I upgrade the laptop to have a fingerprint reader and what features do fingerprint readers have now?

Thanks!

A:Fingerprint Reader

Pretty much that's it. I believe you can also preprogram website passwords into it so you can login with one swipe, but the only websites that don't automatically log you in are banking sites and sites that the reader won't recognize the login screen on anyways.

I had a computer last year for school that had a finger print scanner, and it got used very little.

fingerprint scanners are far more reliable that the webcam facial recognition that some laptops have, but it's easy to just type in your password.

I am thinking about buying a fingerprint reader and I would like to know the pros and the cons.

A:Fingerprint Reader Why or Why Not?

Pros:

Can be useful with the right Win 7 compatible software - log in to forms/passwords.

Cons:

Your finger can be cut off to gain access, and even with a password, your system can be compromised, so options will need to adjusted in the software.

Per the HP forum..it is nothing but a headache and all advise not to attempt using this as a login method for a couple of yearss until it is debugged.

Upon login, it says to connect a fingerprint reader. In Control Panel > Biometric, it says the device cannot be found and to insert it or install drivers. Worked fine for many years until a few days ago after installing a bunch of Windows updates. No idea what to try. Don't seem able to find installable drivers.

A:Fingerprint reader not connected

Geeezus... I'm an IT guy so I kinda gotta know what I'm doing but this was a mess. I uninstalled and reinstalled a bunch of software, mostly Dell, changed a bunch of settings in the Embassy Security Center and BIOS. Finally got it to work but unfortunately I have no easy steps for future searchers to follow cause I changed a lot and don't really know what did it.  One thing that just happened was in the Device Manager, I uninstalled a device that simply wouldn't start, called "Dell ControlVault w/ Fingerprint Swipe Sensor" which kept erroring with "This device cannot start (Code 10)", which forced Windows to find and use another driver that works. New name of the device is "Control Vault w/ Fingerprint Swipe Sensor", loosing the Dell brand name and instead identifying itself with Broadcom. Perhaps that did, I'm not sure. All I know is that it finally works now.

What happens if the Fingerprint Reader fails on either the P50 or P70?  Can one still login?  Or are you locked out?(I've heard that both are possibilities with fingerprint scanners.)Thank you!

A:What happens if fingerprint reader fails P50/P70?

You mean to log into Windows at the Welcome screen using your fingerprint?

If that's what you're asking if 3-4 repeated attempts fail, the fingerprint function will get temporarily inhibited and you will now need to click on the other Welcome screen icon to manually enter your Windows password via keyboard.  Each reboot this starts over, so after clicking on the fingerprint icon on the Welcome screen you'd once again get another 3-4 fingerprint login attempts.  Etc., etc.

Win 10/P50 I have used the fingerprint reader since day one w/this machine. Yesterday I needed to confirm my password and logged in using the password instead of the reader. Ever since, the initial background screen does not recognize the reader. I click through to the login which is expecting a password. I click on options and there are two. One is a PIN and I forgot what the other is but it's not fingerprint. I looked in Control Panel where Lenovo used to have the reader setup and zilch. I opened the Windows Sign In options and there's no apparent toggle for the reader? ? Mark

A:Restarting fingerprint reader?

In Windows 10, fingerprint enrollment and login is handled by Windows itself.
Check in Settings -> Accounts -> Sign-in Options and make sure your fingerprint is set up there.

Hi, so yesterday my laptop suffered a critical service failure and got the blue screen of death.  While I was able to fix this by resetting my pc, many apps, including the one that controls the fingerprint reader is no longer available to me.  My question is this;  Is there a way to reinstall and reactivate the print reader, and if so how, or is this not possible?  Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hi guys, this is my first post here.I just bought an HP ENVY a week ago, and everything was working fine till I updated the fingerprint reader and now it isn't working anymore. I can't set up the login by Windows Hello, it always says that I'm not scanning properly and flashes with a red light, but the thing that worries me the most is that the light on the sensor turns on and off even when it's not supposed to. For example: I open a new tab on Chrome and it goes on and off for like two minutes. Yesterday it went on and off all the time. This obviously this drains out my battery, so I wonder what could I do to solve this. The problems started when I updated it. Thank you for your attention.

My fingerprint reader hasn't worked in months. Does anyone else have the problem of the fingerprint reader not working after hibernate? This is an intermittent problem, doesn't happen all the time, but frequently. Come out of hibernation, it is blinking, swipe my finger, nothing happens, blinking stops and the reader doesn't work after that. I have to enter my Windows password and it doesn't work for any websites. Have to reboot to re-engage the reader. I'm on Win 7 Home Prem 64 bit with latest drivers for the fingerprint reader and lastest update for Authentec software.

A:Fingerprint reader not working after hibernate

So here's the solution(s) as found by Pokey and me: Option 1:  Computer, Properties, Device Manager, Biometric Devices, Validity Sensors, Properties, and the Power Management tab, Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." Option 2:  Try disabling and enabling the "Credential Manager" service by going into Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, Credentials Manager.  Even though the Credentials Manager status is ?Started,? stop the Credentials Manager service and restart it. Find more information here:  https://support.authentec.com/Forum/tabid/318/forumid/49/threadid/600/scope/posts/Default.aspx Option 3:  Do both.

Hi dinomon, Welcome to SF,

Have you install proper drivers for your Finger Print Reader device. If not go to their website. Download the Lastest drives for Windows 7 then install it. See whether it works or not.

P.S. Please fill the System spec so we know what are we dealing with.

Hope this helps,

Hi

I don't have that Thinkpad model, but for what I remember in some other model the Fingerprint reader was internally connected to an USB port.

You can check some programs like HWInfo and check where is the fingerprint reader plugged to see if Windows recognize there is a deviced plugged on it. It can also be interesting for you to grab the hardwareID to know the manufacturer of it.

Which Windows version are you using?
There is also some fingerprint drivers on the Yoga 260 support site for Win10 and Win7.

Hi all, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post but feel free to let me know if this needs to be re-directed. I've had an Elitebook 840 G2 for about 2 months with Windows 10 installed. I frequently used the fingerprint reader to log-in. However, as of yesterday, the fingerprint reader no longer seems to be working. I'm unable to log-in with the reader and when I try to set up a new fingerprint, the reader doesn't read it. I tried looking for the fingerprint reader driver but that's not listed for my model anywhere. Any guidance for what next steps are would be great. Thanks!

You have to know your current password to change it in the User Accounts screen, so even though you can access the system using the fingerprint reader, your stuck.

After you reset your password, create a Password Reset Disk

Hi,

I have an Acer 5942G and recently had to reinstall Windows 7 Home Premium. This of course meant reinstalling all the drivers. All of them so far have installed without a hitch, except for one.

My laptop has a fingerprint reader, so I downloaded the drivers from here

Acer | Download

However when I go to install it the installsheild wizard just seems to hang on the "Acer Bio Protection is configuring your new software installation" part. It just stays like that forever, I even left it for just over an hour and nothing.

It is extremely frustrating and I cant seem to fix it no matter what I do. My "FingerPrinter Reader" does go from an unregognized device in Device Manager to "Secure Biometric Device", but that is all it seems to do.

Can anyone offer a solution?

Thanks

Recently my built-in fingerprint reader went on the fritz. Without touching it or even being near the laptop, it gives the "swipe your finger slower" tab or the " Cannot verify your fingerprint" tab. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is probably really obvious, but I recently purchased a new laptop with a Fingerprint reader. It came with a fingerprint reader (an AuthenTec AES2501A), and Windows installed all the drivers for it and stuff, and it came with this little program to "learn" your fingerprint for each finger (which I went through), but I was hoping you could actually "do" something with it, LOL!

Is this feasible?

Thanks.

These two pieces of hardware have been working intermittently for the past several months but now have failed completely. There is a ribbon cable connecting them to the motherboard but usually to reach it you have to first remove the keyboard and maybe the palmrest to see where it plugs in.

I just purchased a modest Toshiba laptop to replace my five year old HP laptop Being new to W I am not impressed with and do not trust the use of a PIN rather than a sophisticated password The USB reader I bought for the Toshiba is an Eikon using Authentec driver I dislike the apparent limitation of Windows Hello to only associate Fingerprint Instead use Reader Prefer of Password PIN the fingerprint reader with the PIN But my real issue is that this Prefer Fingerprint Reader use Password Instead of PIN prevents my using the FP reader to also open my password program On my HP laptop I have this capability with SimplePass I actually attempted to install HP's SimplePass on the Toshiba but it would not install Unless I'm overlooking a way to do this with W I'm looking for a utility that will store password s for use by the FP reader both for logon and accessing at the minimum my password program I do not wish to change the password for my password program to the Hello PIN just to achieve the dual function Any enlightenment and or suggestions would be greatly appreciated Thanks Mike

Thanks.

Unfortunately, that feature was removed a while ago. You can, howevere,  still set the pre-desktop to work from the fingerprint reader for power on password, disk drive password, etc.

A:Fingerprint reader turned on by itself after install of new ...

Hi, It sounds like there may be a conflict regarding the newly installed software - although not ideal, you may be able to get around this as follows. Shutdown the notebook.  Tap away at f8 as you start the notebook to enter Windows Recovery Console.  Use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and hit enter.  If this loads Ok, from the Start Menu, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools and launch System Restore.  Pick a restore point at least 24 hours before the issue occurred and then proceed with the restore process.  When complete, Windows will reboot as normal. Regards, DP-K

At Startup, the fingerprint reader illuminates. Very occasionally, one pass opens the Windows screen. Usually, it takes more passes and after 2 or 3 I normally give up and use the passcode entry. I've made sure reader and my finger are clean but this makes little difference. Any advise would be appreciated.

A:Fingerprint reader only works spasmodically.

Hi @Dekandev,  Thank you for joining the HP Forums!  I saw your post on how your fingerprint reader only works occasionally. With your HP Envy 17-N152NA Notebook. I am happy to help you with this issue!  The fingerprint function stops working after a system reset has been performed on the computer. To resolve this issue, perform the following steps to clear the fingerprint database. Navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\WinBioDatabase folder.Open the folder.Delete all files in this folder.Close Windows Explorer.Restart the computer. The fingerprint function is restored. NOTE: Fingerprints must be re-enrolled after deleting the contents in the WinBioDatabase folder. Source: Fingerprint Function Stops Working After System Reset is Performed. Please remember to return to this thread and mark 'Accept as Solution', if I have successfully helped you resolve the issue. If you wish to say 'thanks' for my effort to help, click the 'thumbs up' to give me a Kudos. Hope this helps!

My wife wanted me to look into Fingerprint Scanners and I see a KByte Fingerprint Security Reader for $12. People have said that on 64 bit Win 10 Pro no drivers are needed and that they are built in to the OS. But, can we add this to only use with LastPass without having a Windows 10 password?

A:Can I use a Fingerprint Security Reader with NO Win 10 Password?

Hello MPSAN,

I'm afraid that Windows Hello for fingerprint requires that you setup a PIN first, and a PIN requires that you setup a password first.

You can use the vista driver if you install it in compatibility mode. to do this right click the installer>properties>compatibility mode>check vista. then install

dv7 6143cl, Windows 7 64 bit.The computer is several months old and yesterday I finally got around to looking at everything on the machine to see what was useful.I opened SimplePass for the first time (AuthenTec version I believe) and set it up for with my Windows logon. It works and may be useful in the future but no so much right now so I would like to disable or turn off the reader without uninstalling the software. Also, just curious, the set up procedure I used was not like any of the tutorials on the HP sites.

A:How do i disable the SimplePass fingerprint reader for now?

It is best to leave things as they are as long as the software is quiescent. This way it is a simple matter to reinstate your enrollment when you wish to use SimplePass logins. Merry Christmas!

i recently purchased the M$ fingerprint reader -- and noticed the advertised password replacement (when u scan ur finger)does not work on any websites when using the firefox browser. does anyone know of a patch or workaround for this bug. looks as if M$ only enabled compatibility in their driver (or modified version of the program) for IE. kinda mad that the scannner only works for login now and not any internet sites since i dont use IE .- ahh i need a fix please!

A:M$ fingerprint reader incompatibility w/ firefox

I doubt you'll ever see one. This is part of MS trying to hold on to the browsers by not making their software compatible with it. Try using Windows Update or Office Update through firefox, doesn't work.

But can you blame them? Why would you want your software to work on someone elses software who's stealing business from you? From a business stand point, you wouldn't, which is why they won't.

Hi,I was wondering, whether there are actually some Lenovo guys around, or at least people who can get in touch with them. Many people have been trying to get the new fingerprint reader (by Validity / Synaptic) to run under Linux. However it seems, that there simply is no driver around.I'm talking about the fancy new fingerprint reader found in the current Thinkpad generation (Yoga X1, X1 Carbon, X260, X460, T460s, T460p).The linux community already tried to develop some driver, however it seems, that the traffic is encrypted. The only, however very tiresome possibility would probably be to port the Windows driver... See https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=94536 for infos. However in the recent years Lenovo did quite some good work for Linux support, thus I was wondering, whether it would be possible for this to continue. Greetings,grb19

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION My Tecra Z arrived with Win From the start I could not use the Fingerprint Utility When accessing the utility nothing would happen for a moment and then the Re: Win malfunction - Fingerprint Tecra reader 8.1 Z40, error 'Could not connect to the fingerprint reader' eventually popped up I could also not use the built in Win fingerprint enrolment Error This device has not suitable biometric device PS mind that Re: Tecra Z40, Win 8.1 - Fingerprint reader malfunction this built in feature is now metro-embedded and Re: Tecra Z40, Win 8.1 - Fingerprint reader malfunction no biometric device settings are now present in the control panel in Win The problem persisted despite the latest Fingerprint Utility that comes with the drivers were installed for Win bit directly from TOSHIBA website and despite that a biometric device was always present in the Task Manager 'this device works properly' SOLUTION After literally weeks of searching including getting help from the shop and from Toshiba service I could finally solve the issue I uninstalled the driver and the fingerprint reader from the device manager only then are the fingerprint reader drivers really removed Then I cleaned the registry I used CC cleaner software otherwise installing again was failing for some reason Finally I installed an equivalent Fingerprint Utility and the driver for Tecra Z fp-sw- zip which I expected to be use the exact same sensor and since everything works fine I can now access the Fingerprint Utility and use the fingerprint log on in Windows SUGGESTION FOR CORRECTIVE ACTION It seems that the driver offered on Toshiba support website I believe for me it was the Polish one for my exact machine established by TOSHIBA-detector exe is incorrect To make things worse the driver does not communicate any useful information about its miss-fit in the task manager If I had to recalculate into money the time I and a bunch of support people had spent on it it really does make sense to improve that drivers list PS one of the regpatch files in the same online directory has a virus yes A VIRUS recognized in it by Antivir Toshiba- you may wish to contact somebody responsible for that Polish support site REMAINING ISSUES No fingerprint log in is possible in either Internet Explorer nor Mozilla despite appropriate plugins were installed along with the Fingerprint Utility where the web password option was enabled no suggestion appears to appear to attach the fingerprint service to the sites requiring passwords- maybe your service gets blocked by popup blocking protection of browsers I was actually much looking forward to this feature Please ensure that the plugins work correctly with the latest browsers Greetings
