Router: Blocking ports only on Wi-Fi?

Q: Router: Blocking ports only on Wi-Fi?

Our family rents apartments here where I live. And there's a router in my room which guests use too. Since we don't have awesome internet connection, it really annoys me when guests download something via Wi-Fi. So my question is, Is it possible to block ports only for Wi-Fi users, but leave all ports open for cable users?

I googled but did not find anything related.. hope to get an answer here.

Big thanks !

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey all so I have forwarded some ports on my router with Airport Utility NAT port forwarding but using cmd netstat -n the ports I forwarded aren't listed and using online port checkers confirms they are closed I added exceptions to my firewall even though it is off and windows defender is off and Avast's shields are all off I honestly have no idea how to open the ports up and haven't found a way to do this using Windows not pro Anybody have any ideas It seems like Windows is blocking these ports from opening for some reason There doesn't seem to be an override function in cmd to open them either In case forwarded disabled? router Ports firewalls closed; ports, you're wondering why I need the ports open I'm trying to resolve a quot request timeout quot error when pinging somebody on Hamachi - so I'm trying to open the main ports Hamachi uses I just want to play Terraria man Any Ports closed; router forwarded ports, firewalls disabled? help would be greatly appreciated

A:Ports closed; router forwarded ports, firewalls disabled?

Temporarily add your PC IP into the DMZ and try again , see if the internal/external tests then notice the ports open , this will test if it's a router or PC issue....

Don't forget to take it out of the DMZ after testing...

A:Can't Ftp - Something Blocking Ports?

Hi Freekie, Welcome to Bleeping Computer.Sorry for the delay, and even sorrier for what I have to tell you.You have two bot worms on your computer. A bot worm is a program that is installed without your knowledge and enables a hacker, sitting at another computer perhaps thousands of miles away, to control your computer so that it does what he wants -- it becomes his "bot." Bots can be used to launch denial-of-service attacks (This is where hundreds of bots simultaneously bombard a website with requests for information, overwhelming its capacity to respond and, thereby, shutting it down) and for other sorts of mischief. The bot can also do mass spam mailing, download files to the computer, or upload files and data, including passwords and other private information. As a worm, it can also use its mass mailing ability to replicate itself on other users' machines. In your case, one of the bot worms sets up an FTP client on your computer. This probably explains why you are unable to get access to the FTP port of your machine. You should read this writeup (click the "Advanced" tab) for a detailed explanation of what it does.Judging by your description of how your computer is behaving, it appears that this worm is active and in fact is making use of many if not all its capabilities. For these reasons it is very important that, starting immediately, this machine be kept off the internet and physically disconnected from any network it may be part of.If you use or have used this computer for online banking or shopping or for accessing or storing personal information such as school records, then you need to take steps to protect your information that may have been compromised. I recommend these steps for action:How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? The very first step is to go to a clean computer and change any and all online passwords -- banking, credit cards, schools, employers, e-mail, all of them. Then follow up with the other steps in the "Possible Identity Theft" article. Do this now.The problem with infections like this is, there is no telling what or how much damage may have been done to your system. Besides stealing passwords and other personal information, the hacker(s) running these bots could change almost anything on your machine. Putting it back to where it was before may prove to be impossible, because scanners and other security programs will not be able to uncover all the alterations. This is something i don't like to recommend normally, but with a computer this badly infected, the best solution for your safety, and for the safety of others, would be to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows. Please read the following link very carefully:When Should I Format, How Should I ReinstallHere are some more links to help you decide:Security Management - May 2004Help: I Got Hacked. Now What Do I Do? Management - July 2004Help: I Got Hacked. Now What Do I Do? Part II you can make this decision. But please consider carefully before deciding against a reformat. If you do make that decision I will do my best to help you disinfect it, but you must understand that once a machine has been taken over by this type of malware, it can never be declared clean. If you choose to format and reinstall see this link for instructions: let me know whatever decision you make. I will be glad to advise you on exactly how to do the reformat and reinstall. If that is your decision, please include the make and model number of your computer so that I can research it. The procedure is different depending on what sort of recovery disks you have available.Dave

Hello all,

Im using windows 7 RTM x86
I want to close some opened ports. These ports are 135 and 445.
So, I try to close/block these ports using Windows Firewall. ( with advanced settings )

I created inbound rule for closing port 135(TCP) (as you can see attached screenshot )
Also I applied same step for UDP.

but , when I scan my pc's opened ports using Net Tools 5 program ( open port scanner tool ) , it found port 135 as open.
I created rule and blocked/closed port 135 but Net Tools says : Port 135 still open.

This is risky for me.
How can I close this port correctly ?

Note : Im using MSE for Antivirus security.

Thanks a lot

Hi Astroman. . .

Welcome to TSF - Vista Support.

Please run msinfo32 and save as an NFO file (default format). START | type msinfo32 into the start search box and hit enter.

Also, please run Microsoft SysInternals Autoruns and save in ARN default file format. Download and SAVE the autoruns.exe file available HERE. It needs to run at an Elevated admin level - right-click on autoruns.exe, run as admin. For more info on AutoRuns, visit the MS Technet - Live SysInternals site.

Zip the 2 files up, attach to your next post and I'll take a look.

Hey so I made a post awhile ago about not being able to get any ports open. Well I found a site that runs a check that shows your ports as either closed opened or stealth. Stealth means the ISP is blocking the port and it can not be opened. Problem is majority of the ports are stealth so I cant do anything. My ISP is Verizon so is there anything i can do? If i call up tech support will they unblock specific ports for me?

A:Solved: ISP is blocking most of my ports. What can I do?

I ran the test again in safe mode all firewalls off including routers firewall and still it shows 90% of my ports as stealth

A:Is Something blocking ports in vista?

Hi -

Are you sure there is no internal firewall (in Vista - not router) - maybe one that was a trial when system was new like Norton?

To double-check the UDP & TCP ports - download & SAVE SysInternals TCPView from Microsoft TechNet. Then right-click on desktop TCPView icon, run as admin.

Also run a Vista System Health Report - it may hold clues
START | perfmon /report - 60 secs and viewer will appear.

Have you tried booting into Safemode w/Networking to see if any difference?

I read a post of this that was unanswered, I do not know why the ops here closed the thread.
It seems all of the Microsoft 64bit operating systems block incoming ports even with the firewall disabled.
I had the same issue with Vista 64.
If i dual boot to xp32 or win7 32 ports are forwarded fine.
I called Microsoft professional tech support and after being forwarded 7 times through no clear English speaking techs, not one of which even asked me if i had allowed the ports in the firewall or written any rules.
The company should change its name to Clown Central.
Any way if anyone has any useful information to get a port open on win7 64, i would greatly appreciate it.
I have even tried turning the firewall and all anti virus off to no avail.
Like i said it works with the same settings on 32bit.
This issue is wide spread just do a search on google.

I'm normally pretty good about troubleshooting stuff like this. However here is the problem:
I have 2 Computers on my network. One a laptop running vista is fine. My desktop running win 7 Home Prem is where I have the issue.
I can use any web browser (firefox, safari, etc,), I can log into and play WoW, Starcraft 2, Ventrilo works fine. Steam Client and all steam apps are blocked.
I downloaded port checker and it says they are blocked or not open. Generally I don't have issues setting this up. \
Also I should note Steam Client and apps have run fine on this rig for 8 months give or take.
I can log on steam on the laptop so it must be software.
also pretty much this:
I hope someone can help

My first guess - McAfee. Do this -

Run the McAfee Removal Tool.

Click on the McAfee RT link in my signature area below and download/SAVE it to your desktop. Then go to desktop, close sall windows, RIGHT-click on the MRT icon and select Run as Administrator. When complete - re-boot.

Now reset the Windows Firewall to its default settings -
START | type FirewallSettings.exe into the start search box | click on FirewallSettings.exe above | select the Advanced Tab | click on "Restore Defaults" | Click Apply (if hi-lighted) | Click OK

Please let me know how you make out.

I have found someone using the UDP port 1900 on a open network at the public library. They get into my machine and change settings like the sound settings and so on.

Since they only seem to be using port 1900 is it possible to block this port specifically or should I just block all the UDP ports(the UDP protocol seems to be used by Steam and one game that I don't really play anymore)

What effects of blocking all the UDP ports on a windows 7 64 bit system would there be?
Does windows need this protocol to be open for system use? (I don't see anything "system" related coming up in a network sniffing program I am trying out)

I use AVG internet security and it seems to be letting this one person in on port 1900.

A:Blocking ports with firewall software ?

Why do you think "someone" is using a specific port? I find very difficult to think that, just because a port is open, and even then, that doesn't gives access to change things like sound settings, making me think there is something else roaming around.

Anyway, an open port is irrelevant without a program using it, either listening for connections or using it to initiate them. Particularly about UDP 1900, it's used for SSDP UPnP (look here for reference), which is known to be a vulnerable protocol that should be always disabled (Windows enables this by default). You may want to check the system services and disable "SSDP discovery" to prevent any exploits on it from other programs in your computer.

About disabling all UDP, don't do that, ever.
Several critical protocols run over UDP, of particular importance being DHCP (port 68) and DNS (port 53). DHCP lets you get an IP address automatically, which is crucual on public networks and sometimes in your own too if you don't know a bit of network management. Without DNS, you can't resolve website addresses, breaking 99% of internet. Some other programs may also use UDP for their own purposes (notably games, but many others too).

The proper way to use a firewall would be to block everything by default, but selectively unblock ports/programs that you know you need. At least some UDP and TCP ports must be open for normal operation.

I think something is wrong but I'm not sure what.
For starters, I read that there are common Ports that should be blocked for internet security. I've tried to block these Ports in windows firewall, but immediately, in the Control Panel, under "Allow these programs through Windows firewall", I see my rules with a check in front of them. I want them blocked.
Some of the Ports I'm trying to block are: 135-139, 445, 5000, and some other remote Ports.
Does anyone know anything about this?
The operating system is Windows 7 home premium.

A:blocking ports on windows firewall

Okay, this is strange(?). If I enable the rule to block Ports in windows firewall, the rule is checked in "allow a program through windows firewall" located in the control panel under system and security(I never added my rule to the allowed program list). If I uncheck the rule in "allow programs through windows firewall", then the rule is disabled in windows firewall, and only in private profiles(which means the Ports are no longer blocked) . Initially, when I created the rules, I blocked public, private, and domain profiles in rule set up.
Maybe I'm off base but it seems like there is some kind of script to keep these Ports open.

A:Help on blocking common trojan ports

I see you have Kaspersky WKS...right? Maybe it would better to post in the Kaspersky forums about it since you are using their product. Firewall settings (rules creation) vary by product as per my experience with Online Armor Premium, Outpost Firewall Pro, Privatefirewall, Avast Firewall and CIS. I am not a techy with firewalls but I do have Stealth Mode and block all outgoing ports 445, 443, 137-139, 5500, 5800 and 5900-5903 and 3389 to name a few. Depending on the firewall, I create an application rule concerning those ports or just a global rule. My settings being stealthed will show some "listening" but having "listening" is not necessarily mean that I am seen. There is no need to block those specific incoming ports as all traffic gets blocked by the Stealth settings.

Now that is based on my experience and having not used Kaspersky firewall I can't say much. Maybe some here who are using KIS may lend a hand here. The Kaspersky forum guys can help you clear out your settings because imho 200 related blocking rules is too may mess up the firewall global/application rules or may overlap.

Good luck

Hello TSG Folks!

I have an ISP supplied D-Link DI-624 router with four ethernet ports on the back. Two ports are being used by computers, one by a printer, and one is wired downstairs to a PS2. I am thinking about buying an Xbox 360 but I don't have enough ethernet ports. What can I do or what should I buy?

Also, I am looking for something to extend the range of my current router or a whole new router. What do you guys recommend? The router is (and will be) in the upper right corer of the house.

Thanks a ton!

Can anyone tell me if this technique will continue to work on the new MSN 8 Live Messenger? If so, does anyone know the appropriate URLs? If not can anyone suggest another way to block this system from users of my network?

A:PC Freezing & Blocking Router.

Hello, if you are running a 32 bit OS then you will not able to utilize the full amount of your 4 Gb of RAM, so depending on processor and mobo, you would see anywhere between 2.75 and 3.5 or so.
As for the freezing, that is usually caused by an hardware issue, or if a low end processor is being used, it is likely getting too busy and running an 100%, in those instances until it is finished doing what it thinks is a priority, you may loose most or all functions for the time being. Start by booting the machine with a diagnostics disk and test the RAM and HDD If those check out, keep your Performance Monitor window open while you operate the machine and pay attention to the CPU cycles when it 'freezes'.

ive got a netgear rangemax router hooked into netgear 16 port switch which feeds 11 computers. MOST of the time any computer on the network cannot sign onto aim, even macs. but they can sign onto aim if they connect to the network upstairs. could it be the router?

A:Is it possible my router is blocking AIM from signing on?

Are the PC's upstairs connected to the same router the switch is? If yes I am perplexed why the ones on the switch cant but the ones directly on the router can.. If the PC's have a different network connection than the ones downstairs then yes it can be a router configuration setting.

Hi everyone I thought the firewall on my router was supposed to protect me from inbound events recorded by the firewall on my pc I installed a Motorola WR GP wireless router a little over a week ago My XP desktop is wired to the router and is firewall everything. Router blocking not my W se laptop is connected wireless I left the rd party firewalls on just to see if there would be any inbound events There wasn t for a while But the last or days there Router firewall is not blocking everything. has been on the Xp machine today which is far less than before i installed the router I thought there was a Motorola forum but haven t found it I have all the recomended encryption and made passwords on the router Does anyone know if there is a way to stop this I was under the impression that you should turn off rd party firewalls when using a router firewall Now I m afraid to I was looking in to changing IP addresses on the computers in the routers settings but I don t know if this is the problem I know DHCP is enabled if this helps Don t know if I should change those settings to be more secure The firewall on the desktop is McAfee and on the laptop Zone Alarm So far no access attempts have been recorded on the laptop Thanks nbsp

A:Router firewall is not blocking everything.

I left the 3rd party firewalls on just to see if there would be any inbound eventsClick to expand...

Without explaining the events we can't tell you what is occuring and even if its an inbound "threat". Inbound attempts can come in on a router for a number of reasons. The big question is it a threat?

Something as innocuous as your Anti-virus trying to run an update will generate an inbound connection...

NAT firewalls do not STOP all incoming connections they actually filter incoming connections. Certain things like port 80 and things like that are open specifically for web browsing.

DHCP enabled or disabled does nothing to provide security.

You may want to read this article here -

As well check and make sure something is not in the DMZ.... DMZ places your PC totally outside the NAT firewall.

I hope this belongs here,

I cannot access one certain website from my home. None of my computers or iPhone can access this one site. Yet no problems from outside my home network.

The router is a Verizon Westell A90 1900EM15. Pretty standard verizon router out here.

I reset it to defaults, and also tried the lowering of MTU settings by increments of 10 till I got to 1400..

Still get browser saying it cannot find website.

I checked through all my browsers and the sites will do the same thing. It's not just affecting one computer either. All the computers in the house do the same. I decided to unplug my router and plug my laptop in directly and it worked but when I plugged the router back in, the same thing happened as before so I tried turning it off and on, resetting it, restarting my computer, just about everything I could thing of and still no luck.

I unplugged my router and plugged my comptuer directly into the cable modem and I can connect just fine to the website. However, there is more than one person in this house, so the router is essential. I have used this website for months and months and never had one problem. Now all of a sudden, it seems as thought my router is blocking it? I have an older router DI-604 and yes I updgraded the firmware, reset it, unplugged it, restored defaults, etc. I even bought a brand new switch today but it caused the same exact problem, so it will be going back. Meanwhile I have spent hours trying to figure out the problem (and days) with no answers. Anyone have any ideas?

A:Which router blocking port

I think that there is no way for a single program or website to determine how many routers you are using. And if it can't tell how many, it can't tell which is doing any blocking.

You've only mentioned one router, and have said that on that router the port is forwarded to "our [email?] server" so my first guess would be that some other router or software firewall is blocking the port.

A:[help] router blocking hamachi...?

Look up configuration settings for the game. You probably need to open one (or more) ports in the router, to allow traffic through it to the internet. The games support page(s) should have these configuration settings (and ports).

Yes, this is the same as configuring a "firewall" in that firewalls and routers function in the same way; they allow or block traffic based on what port they are using. Most games have specfic ports they want to use, and I am assuming this one is no different.

Once (or if) you have found out which ports need to be open, you will then need to figure out how to open them on your specific router. That information will be on DLink's support pages online.

My younger brother keeps scamming his way to gaining access to his laptop and then goes on to play online games, when he's got the PC for completing his projects.
How can I block router/internet access to that specific program without affecting his average browsing capabilities? I would preferably like to do so without touching his laptop.

A:Blocking router access to a program

This is difficult to do from the router, since you can't really block by application from a router : this is the task of the software firewall. If your brother has an administrator account in windows he'll be able to modify the rules of the firewall though.

Most routers have various means of limiting Internet access, this includes allow/block a specific machine connected to the router, maybe at some specific times, and also hardware firewall features to allow/block specfic ports.

All of this depends on the model though, I'd suggest reading the manual or maybe go to the manufacturer's website for more information.

If it has a hardware firewall, you could limit connections to only 80/443 (Internet browsing), and maybe 110/995 (POP3 Email), 143/993 (IMAP Email). Many online games (MMORPG types) use non-standard ports so it might block them. If he uses browser-based games, you're out of luck.

A more involved solution is to block some specific IP that the game uses. If you block the server which the game has to connect to, then the game won't work. You'll have to find this IP though, and repeat the same process for every game your brother has. To find what IP a game uses, googling firewall plus the name of the game is rather easy and quick.

Another solution that you might check is Parental Controls : Parental Controls - Microsoft Windows
This built-in Windows feature is great to control what a standard user can or cannot do : which programs can be executed, which websites are allowed, etc... It also has monitoring tools that report whatever the user did.

Hi all,

Basically using a Speedtouch 580 wireless DSL Router as a means of sharing internet access throughout the house. The problem is that I need to connect to my works VPN via a Sonicwall connection and I'm getting the following error message:

The peer is not responding to phase 1 ISAKMP requests.

Now I'm pretty sure its down to the NAT firewall on my router so I was wondering if anyone knew of the settings I need to configure to get this to work. Or if anyone has any better solutions?

Cheers for any help,

A:NAT Firewall on router blocking sonicwall VPN?

The only ways to get around a NAT that I know of, are to port forward for the application with which you are trying to connect or to use DMZ, if the router supports it, which I wouldn't recommend. Apart from that I'm not too clued up on your situation. Some routers support VPN passthrough, if so then you can configure that from the router's web based interface, and shouldn't need to port forward or do anything else.

My landlord switched routers last week, and now my internet is driving me crazy. Sites open very slowly, if at all(usualy i have to open the site several times before it loads), then i check the router log it says: Unrecognized attempt blocked from to TCP:46451
The thing is, that if i download anything it works at normal speed, the problem is only when opening sites.
The router is a Level One FBR-1413TX and firmware version is R1.96j34

I'm fairly sure it's the router causing the problem, but i may be mistaken.

Any suggestions for a solution?

hi, sorry if this is the wrong thread... for a long time now.. i havent been able to have ppl connect to my ftp site or send files thru dcc on mirc... and i THINK this all started after i got my linksys router....
is there a firewall in my router ??

thanks for any help

A:is my linksys router blocking ftp and dcc connects ?

Yes, your router has a firewall and it will block that traffic.

You will need to enable port forwarding (its under gaming and applications usually).

Forward port 21 to your FTP server. I'm not sure what the port for DCC is, but you will need to forward it also.

For port forwarding, you will need static IP addresses for you computers.

I want some websites to be prevented from being accessed on all the devices that are using my wifi router
I read the instruction to do so from the router's manufacturer's website here How to set up access control for website blocking on TP-LINK Wireless Router? - Welcome to TP-LINK

I tried hard but couldn't succeed in doing so because the instructions are really confusing at several places. For example at one place it asks me to enter ip range for something. I want some website to be blocked for all the devices that use the router for all the time everyday forever. What steps should I follow?

Until yesterday my various equipment was networking to each other and the internet without a problem. After i reset my d-link DSL-2640B router (would this initiate an update?) my x-box would not connect to the internet, There is no problem connecting to the router and the home network. Everything is talking to each other and everything else is connected to the internet including the TV. The router must just be blocking the x-box and only from yesterday. I checked ports that are talked about and i think i set up port triggering, but then noticed the firewall is disabled anyway. I have no real knowledge of networking. I presume a setting has changed blocking just the xbox connecting. The provider is a waste of time to get help from,

i found this options on router :
forward rules > special AP , and it has a line to insert the port , and a checkbox to "enable" connection

i'm not sure i can disable connection here , but seems close to my goal . ( i rather to disconnect the whole connection and not just some apps port)

and the other option i found is MAC control .

can this help me ?

A:blocking one of the computers connected to router

Subwoffer13, some routers allow you to turn off and on dhcp. this way you can change the ip range of the router and put a fixed IP on your machine, without dhcp giving your other machine an IP in the range of the routers's IP range, they can't get anywhere.

If it was a wireless machine, the MAC address can be entered and not allowed to access the wireless router/access point.

I'm trying to disable access for a voip phone which is connected through my router at home. I'm currently using a TP-LINK Wireless Router WR340G. The phone is a Samsung SMT-W6100.

My basic understanding is that I should block the port which the phone is using - but i'm not sure if:

i) it is the port I should be trying to disable
ii) how I can do this on my router and
iii) how to find out which port the phone is using.

Would any of you be able to guide me through this? I'm quite a beginner when it comes to router settings/networking so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance for your time.

A:Blocking voip phone from router?

Unplug the VoIP phone, it's blocked 100%!

You can restrict the MAC address of the VoIP phone in the router's configuration, that will also prohibit connections.

I telnet into my router, log in with Admin and Pass

A:How To Get More Ports From My Router

Hi john, this is your lucky day

Personally, I'd get a cheap router and set it up as a switch, you may even be able to get one from your ISP, I don't know about where you are, but here they hand them out like sweets. I just phone them up, tell them my router's fried, and they send me a new one.

To be fair, it can even be a broken router if the Networking functions still work on it, my 2nd router has ADSL connection issues, so I just use it as a switch.

this tutorial will tell you how to set up a 2nd router as a switch: Multi Router Network - Configure

It will show you how to configure a 2nd router as a switch (effectively 4 more Ethernet Ports, and extended Wireless range)

If you open a port / pinhole in a router, you don't need to do that on every PC right?
You just open up the routers address in a browser and open the port you need, right?

The port I need to open is 5631 or 5361, i can't remember.

Anyway, I would just need to do this one time to my knowledge, because you are changing the router, not the PC.
I'm doing this tomorrow and I wanted to know before I jumped in.

I hope it is only one time because the network has 3 servers and 27 workstations.

Because of that to have access to my server from outside of my home network I use dynamic dns from
But when I try to enter the dns or my dynamic IP address in the address bar of my web server with the following port IPORT(8080) I cant connect.
Now my network has one modem and one router.
And my router is blocking, I have Level one router. What should I do? I tried with Virtual Servers but it didnt worked.
Thank you in advance for your time!

A:Solved: Router is blocking access to my web server :(

Some routers have problems looping back a connection from a computer on the LAN side to server on the LAN using the server's public IP address. You need to have the connection to the server tested from a computer on the Internet.

If an outside computer can not connect and you are sure the router has port forwarding set correctly, it is possible that the modem may need to have port forwarding set on it as well if you can access those settings. Finally some DSL service providers do not allow running a server on residential accounts. They block incoming access for commonly used server ports.

How do I prevent my wireless router from blocking my ip address?

A:Wireless router blocking surveilance system

You probably need to port forward the ports that the security system uses through the router. The failure to ping is because the router is configured to block ICMP requests, I believe that's on the Tools page in the router config.

Opening a port is a goofy term - - let's start with just using a port.
For a port to exist, some program creates a socket and then uses it to LISTEN for connections. You can see this with (command prompt tool) netstat -oan
Programs which are awaiting connections show up like

the nnn are the 'port numbers' created by the program.

Q? Which ports are open? A: only those that exist, eg: port 135 is open, and port 136 is closed (ie doesn't exist).
Regardless of your other setups for the router and firewall, the port is not open unless a program is LISTENING.

HOWEVER, that's only one-third of the story; two other conditions must be met

the firewall on that system must be configured to ALLOW traffic to the specific port(s) desired
and, if a system not on your LAN needs access to a program on that system, then
the router must port forward
Consider this network

+ ------- System A
+-------- System B

if System A has the program (and the port is listening and the firewall allows)
then System B can get to it without concern for the router at all.[*]

Now if your friend in New York wants to connect to System A located in Los Angeles,
then the router must port foward.

Port Forwarding requires that the server address never change,
so first you need to arrange to have System A use a static IP address on your router.
Once that's correct, then, using the documentation for the program on system A, you add a port forward like
forward port xxx to IPaddress-for-systemA
SO; get [*] to work first and then deal with the router

Reason: Connection timed out''

So.... How can i open my ports?? Do i have to call my router provider or something??

A:Router ports won't open

It really depends on your specific router model to setup port forwarding, it's hard to tell really. But a few things you could do in advance are checking that your computer as a fixed LAN IP address, and forward the port to that IP and make sure a program is actually listening to that port when you run the check online.
Another way to check it would be to connect two computers to the router, one to a LAN port and another to the WAN port, and check whether or not they can see each other.

So pop quiz...
What are the benefits, if any, of plugging each port into each port on the back of a single modem/router.

The modem/router also has 4 ethernet ports, an adsl, and wireless lan.

Let's assume the cables are cross-overs.
Let's also assume the switch is in the downlink position.
Let's further assume we all know the quote regarding assumptions.

This is pretty much my problem, whenever I forward my port I want open, i check it and get the message "Error: I could not see your service on on port (55655)
Reason: Connection refused"

It's driving me insane. I've forwarded ports before on this router, but it's not working this time.

A:My router will not let me open ports.

Make sure you set a static IP on the computer you want
to forward to and use that port for forwarding.
The IP in that error looks like it may be your modem IP.

Hey guys,

So recently I bought myself a brand new Belkin N900 Router. It does the job I want it to but it has these 2 usb ports on the back of the router itself. Can someone please explain to me what these usb ports can be used for?? I've tried googling for answers but haven't found the answer I'm looking for. Could someone please explain to me how I can use these USB ports on the back of the router? Thanks

It could be a problem with you ISP. If it has been happening recently, maybe there is overcrowding, or something of that sort. Try calling them and see what they say, they could be having problems.

I am new here but wanted to contribute what I feel Bad Code/Servers Ad/Malware/Malicious Blocking Router at the is a big help with bad hosts adware spyware malicious software and bad servers I added the code below to my routers quot Startup quot and quot DNSMasq quot entries It uses the hosts file from Welcome to the MVPs org home page to block these bad hosts servers It is basically doing the same thing as adding the hosts file to your system locally but Blocking Bad Ad/Malware/Malicious Code/Servers at the Router this way you only have to maintain the list on the router The way the code is written it automatically refreshes the file from mvps org each time you boot your router I have my router on a scheduled boot each night to refresh the list for any updates added by mvps org I have been using this since last August and am very hapy with the results The Blocking Bad Ad/Malware/Malicious Code/Servers at the Router code quot Startup quot --------- rogue echo -e quot bin sh nn nwhile sleep ndo n twget -q -O - http www mvps org winhelp hosts txt grep quot quot grep -v localhost awk ' print quot rogue t quot Blocking Bad Ad/Malware/Malicious Code/Servers at the Router ' tr -d ' ' gt tmp dlhosts n quot gt tmp write dlhosts echo -e quot t grep -il doubleclick tmp dlhosts amp amp break n t n -gt amp amp break n tlet n ndone n -e jffs hosts amp amp cat jffs hosts gt gt tmp dlhosts n -e opt etc hosts amp amp cat opt etc hosts gt gt tmp dlhosts nkillall -HUP dnsmasq quot gt gt tmp write dlhosts chmod x tmp write dlhosts tmp write dlhosts amp quot DNSMasq quot ---------------- addn-hosts tmp dlhosts You will know you have it working because the blocked ads and banners will show up as quot Internet Explorer cannot display the web page quot I have a small program I run on my server to intercept the calls and send a blank pixel to the requesting system thus eliminating the quot Internet Explorer cannot quot message Instead of the error message a nice clean blank block is shown making the page look nicer Note There are a couple of applications designed to intercept these calls as well that are freeware Pixelserv and AdServer are the ones I know of I am running a third-party firmware on my router DD-WRT and it is working great with this in place If anyone has any questions I will do the best I can to answer them I got the code from the DD-WRT forums so I thank the good people who provided a way to do this at the router I hope this helps others Chris

A:Blocking Bad Ad/Malware/Malicious Code/Servers at the Router

I thought I would post a screen-shot of the AdServer program running on my server to show the number of intercepts. These numbers have been collecting for about two weeks (since I reset them). I am astounded at the counts
